 HI Nagarajji

Director Krishna directed his debut movie Sillenu Oru Kaadhal, and
got a
chance to work with ARR in his very first movie .

 1. How did you become a Director ?

It was a long cherished dream of about 12 years . But the starting
point of
me becoming a director was because of Rahman Sir. I didnt have any
idea of
whom to start this film from , and how to go about it . Kalaipuli
Dhanu was
the producer. One day, Dhanu Sir called me and told me that an
appointment
with Rahman Sir has been sought and he told me to come. I was so
happy to
listen to him saying that as I will never know if such a time would
ever
happen in the future. It was a very rainy day, and my bike was also
giving
me some problems. I came to ARR studio fully drenched. Rahman sir
told that
he would listen to the script another day.But I was ready with the
script.
And also asked if we could finish it in 15 minutes, as he had some
other
commitment to follow. But I took 2 1/2 hrs of his time. He didnt
tell
anything, and even switched off his mobile and was listening.

After 2 1/2 hrs, he told to call Dhanu ( Producer ) and asked
When can we
have the composing ?. And that day cannot be forgotten in my life

First I met Rahman sir, and then only was the script finalised with
Actor
Surya. we did the recording for Munbe Vaa song .

 2. When did you get to hear Rahman Sir songs ?

right from the time Roja , I have been liking Rahman Sir song.

The first song that Rahman Sir gave was Munbe Vaa, and next was
Machaikaari.
Picturisation of Rahman Sir songs was a tough challenge for me. He
composes
music so superbly, and its a real challenge to picturise them well.
When I
had discussion with Rahman Sir, regarding Munbe Vaa song, I told
him the
desire of picturising it in that way. So Rahman Sir visualised it
before I
could visualise and gave me that wonderful song.

 3. Other experiences with ARR ??

Apart from his music, which no can fathom, he is a very good human
being.
The thought that I had about him at a distance , got transformed
into an
admiration, when I went near him. A man of such heights, behaving
like a
very ordinary person increased my admiration levels. He sees
everybody as a
human being, irrespective of whosover he may be and whatsoever he
may be. I
am also trying my level best to be like ARR

 4. David Lee - Fav Hollywood Director

 5. future Film - Yen Eppadi Mayakinnai - Its a film produced by
Motherland
 Pictures .

 6. Fav Songs of ARR - Kaadhal Rojave, Vennilave ( Minsarava
kanavu ) ,
 Maduraikku Pogadhadee ( ATM ) . Athiradhee ( SIVAJEE )

A director must be a good experiencer of music. He should be able to
experience it first. ARR finished all the songs of SOK within 30
minutes.
The first and foremost tune of ARR was liked by me . ARR told me
I do not
know. I liked working with your team. It makes me feel energetic.

Fav Songs in Hindi - Roobaroo ( RDB ) , chaiyya chaiyya, Tanha
tanha (
 Rangeela ) , Chinamma Chilakkama ( Meenaxi )

Yen Eppadi Mayakinnai - Future film; a Musical Film. I wanted ARR
for this.
But he is too busy. But If I approach him, he will not say NO.
But I do
not want to pressurise him for this. But I wanted ARR to light a
candle for
my film, as I am inroducing a New Music Director. ARR asked me
Tell me ;
What help you want. I seeked ARR's Blessings for which he told
You will
surely become a good director. Do not worry. My prayers are always
there .

Dear Sunil,

Agreed, recognising the effort of musicians are important. But
illayaraja has an orchestra and arr does not. In this case its
becomes difficult to detail all the names in one cd cover.

Yuvan,Harris and our boss works quite similar. Anyway, I am not
comparing Illayaraja with arr coz both are from diffrent schools but
to me though i am a arr fan, in terms of composition raja is way
above. You can see that in shivamani interview where he calls raja as
a genius in compostions and rahman for his technicality expertise.

Dear All,

Rahman and other music directors work differently. For example if
you
look at Ilayaraja , he composes and give notes to his musicians
where
they just play according to notes and no changes. So the effort
comes
from Illayaraja as a soul person and the operators are many.I
guess
in this case raja did not feel the need to highlight / credit the
  musicians names.

In ARR case, I feel he starts it all fresh. Gives a basic rag and
asks the musician to play in different styles. So these musicians
have to be credited coz rahman chooses what fits to the
composition.

I guess thats the difference. I am a Rahman fan myself but in
terms
of composition and notes..we have to give it to ilayaraja. He is a
mastero and till date no one can match it.

Rahman is great in his own stride coz the layers he puts into a
song
and the sound is pure. I had asked my friend who is a professional
sound engineer to hear Rangde Basanti and was surprised to hear
that
its the ultimate sound at this contemporary time. Its very pure
and
asked me more abt arr. Thats the strength of arr.

Anyway, please do not think i am comparing both of them. I am
highlighting the need to credit the musicians and why?

[arr] Do signature tunes for brands work?

2008-07-23 Thread Vithur
Do signature tunes for brands work? Seema Sindhu / New Delhi July 23,
2008, 0:40 IST

Jingles, backed with a good idea, do help etch a brand in consumers' minds.
Perhaps, this is why we still remember the old tunes and the jingles of *Hamara
Bajaj* and Nirma.

The concept is making a comeback with companies like Bajaj, Titan,
Kingfisher, Nirma and Airtel using their old jingles enmeshed with new
visuals.

So, is the concept likely to bring brand recognition for these firms?

Prasoon Joshi, executive chairman (India) and regional executive creative
director (Asia Pacific), McCann-Erickson, says: Today, the entertainment
quotient in life has gone up. TV, films, online, ringtones, the options are
endless. The shelf life of a campaign or an ad has gone down. The
'melodious' tune, be it in films or ads, which takes its time to gently make
way to your heart is a rarity for these reasons.

Bobby Pawar, chief creative officer, Mudra group, says: Audio signatures,
such as Titan's Mozart score or Airtel's tune composed by AR Rahman aid
brand recognition and memorability. But, let's remember that these two are
among the few that succeeded and after considerable exposure over a long
period of time.

Pawar says: Jingles were prevalent when media was not as cluttered as it is
today. Now merely singing the virtues of the product will fail to engage
consumers. *Cadbury*'s or *Hamara Bajaj* are exceptions, where although the
communication had a powerful jingle, it was also driven by a strong idea.
Which is why, they are still memorable.

+1.

In fact, ARR praised Krishna for selecting good tunes for this movie (something
like that. 'Directors are the ones who select the tunes')

I liked this movie except that boring climax Newyork Nagaram picturaization
and also this movie was far better than what people like Vijay, Ajith, Vishal
produce. Story was OK but a better screen play could have made a difference,
IMO.

Overall, a great album in tamil from ARR after a long time - I'd even rate SOK
album above Sivaji God Father.

I still listen to this album and Newyork nagaram atleast 3-4 times in a day.

2008-07-23 Thread Vinayakam Murugan
Hello Shashi

I also regard IR very highly. When you talk about compositions, I feel
both are equally good. Their styles differ - IR does it all himself ,
probably impromptu whereas ARR is a composition by jamming. We can
keep arguing till the rainbow's end about which style is better.

All I am trying to say, is that it is good to see credit being to
musicians. This doesn't in any way imply that the other MDs were wrong
not to give credit . :)

Yuvan,Harris and our boss works quite similar. Anyway, I am not
comparing Illayaraja with arr coz both are from diffrent schools but
to me though i am a arr fan, in terms of composition raja is way
above. You can see that in shivamani interview where he calls raja as

 you

 comes
from Illayaraja as a soul person and the operators are many.I

in this case raja did not feel the need to highlight / credit the

Anyway, please do not think i am comparing both of them. I am

Vithur,

With due respects, I think you are over crediting Krishna for Munbe
Vaa and other songs of SOK. They were great songs. I listen to New
York Nagaram and Munbe Vaa atleast twice a day. But if we use the same
yardstick, we should credit SJ Surya's vibes for 'Mayilirage' and
Praveen Kanth's vibes for 'Kaiyil midhakkum kanava nee'. Possible? :)

New York Nagaram is one of the best songs of ARR, and unfortunately it
is one of the worst picturised song of ARR. Even if Krishna and the
choreographer had tried to implement the lyrics literally, the
picturisation would have been top class. Alas!

No offense!

-in Pappu the beats the song starts with somehow give the feel that it
is not a regular Pritam, VS or whoever song as they are different from
those in these composers' songs. then as soon as the chorus/chant
(tintin ta na tintin ta na na, whatever) starts it becomes evident
that it is ARR. it is typical ARR style of chant.

  HI Nagarajji

Director Krishna directed his debut movie Sillenu Oru Kaadhal, and

  Pictures .

Yen Eppadi Mayakinnai - Future film; a Musical Film. I wanted ARR
 for this.
But he is too busy. But If I approach him, he will not say NO.
 But I do
not want to pressurise him for this. But I wanted ARR to light a
 candle for
my film, as I am inroducing a New Music Director. ARR asked me
 Tell me ;
What help you want. I seeked ARR's Blessings for which he told
 You will
surely become a good director. Do not worry. My prayers are always
 there .

Dhoom' and 'Sathyam', A R Rahman's 'Sakkarakatti' and Yuvan Shankar Raja's
brisk tunes in 'Saroja' are sold like hot cakes.

The songs in these five albums are already topping the charts. Music-lovers
are keen to buy them as they feel the songs are worth listening to.

The audio shop owners say there are very good turnouts in their shops.
Hopefully the trend would continue.

[arr] Jodhaa Akbar

2008-07-23 Thread Vithur
 Jodhaa Akbar (2007)

July 23, 2008 by
Alexhttp://lightscamerahistory.wordpress.com/author/oriana78/

Set during the 16th century in India, Jodhaa Akbar tells us the love story
between Akbar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akbar_the_Great, one of the
most powerful and famous Mughal emperors and his wife, the Rajput princess
Jodhabai http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jodhabai.

The movie starts with some scenes during Akbar's boyhood and how he grew to
later become an astute ruler who favoured culture and knowledge. Years
later, after many conquests and having built an Empire, he finally wins the
allegiance of the Rajsputs and then agrees to marry the daughter of King
Bharmal of Amer, the lovely princess Jodhaa. It's a political allegiance and
the two will only meet briefly some time before the marriage and with a
curtain between them. Of course, not everyone is happy with this union and
many conspiracies start to blossom…

At ease in battle and political schemes, Akbar will be completely torn apart
by the honest and fiery Jodhaa and it quickly becomes clear that the only
way to conquer his Queen is to win her heart.
The plot is mainly focused in Akbar-Jodhaa's relationship, how they manage
to live together despite their cultural and religious differences and
political confrontations between Rajputs and Mughals.

Some of you might know already Ashutosh Gowariker for
Lagaanhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0169102/or even
Swades http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367110/ and admire his talent behind a
camera and how he surrounds himself with a great crew who manages to create
some of the most beautiful Indian movies. We certainly need to mention that
this story is mostly fiction (the director claims 70% of the movie is the
product of his imagination) and that many controversy still runs about
princess Jodhaa. Despite the theories and several discussions, they will not
ruin your pleasure while watching this movie and the amazing photography and
beautiful costumes will certainly take your breath away.

This movie is full of enjoyable moments, but the scene of the vegetarian
lunch prepared by the Queen and her discussion with Maham Anga (the
intimidating mother of Akbar) must be one of the best. The courtship is
also rather funny and those looks between them just sparkle! Some other
scenes are a bit off, like the sword fight between Jodhaa and Akbar, that
really didn't seem necessary, or the final battle that could have ended much
sooner, but it was still entertaining. After 3h30m of movie, you're asking
for more!

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0706787/ and Hrithik
Roshan http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004335/ have an incredible chemistry on
screen and you can feel it in every scene, which is one of the main reasons
for this success. Rai Bachchan continues to show to everyone why she is
considered one of the most talented actresses in India. This woman truly has
something special, no matter how many people are on the screen, you are
always looking at her and this has nothing to do with her beauty. Roshan is
a little bit too muscled for a 16th century emperor but we'll not complain
much about that. He is regal and bears the title of Emperor rather well.

The music is truly magnificent but nothing less was expected from the
acclaimed composer A. R. Rahman http://www.arrahman.com/ who already
showed his talent in so many movie soundtracks.

A must-see for all Bollywood fans and certainly a movie for all those who
appreciate a good romantic story with some action and history thrown in.

Director : Ashutosh Gowariker
Main actors : Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan Hrithik Roshan
Historical context : 16th Century India
Movie Soundtrack : A. R. Rahman
DVD release date : 28th July 2008 in the UK (might change since it was
already delayed several times)

and it's a historic period movie about brave brothers raising their voices
 against the colonial domination.

Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi had personally invited A.R. Rahman to his

score music for this film. Kalainyar had watched period films like Lagaan,
Mangal Pandey and got enthralled with Rahman's musical score.

Now, Rahman has almost accepted to score music for the film and things
would be confirmed sooner. Some Media quoted A R Rahman visited CM regarding

It's my favorite number, but Mansoor, Abbas and I took a call jointly. We
felt the song was only making the film lengthier. But since the results are
out, the song has been added in its third week. Initially, we thought of
retaining it for just one week. But looking at the feedback, we may stretch it
to three weeks. However, let me add, the song will not be a part of the final
cut in the DVD. It will be featured in the unseen portions, Aamir divulges.

[arr] Vijay Iyer in Rahmania Radio Program

2008-07-23 Thread Vithur
Dear Rahmaniacs,

VIJAY IYER ( our co-owner and moderator of Yahoogroups) was in air today ,
sharing his experiences with Raihanaji on Aaha FM 91.9. A brief of what he
discussed with Raihanaji is as follows :-

Hi. This is Vijay. I am from Mumbai, just moved to Chennai. I was a big
fan of AR, then became a friend of him, and its my good fortune that I work
for him now. I am based in Chennai now. Rahman has announced his new music
label, which is called KM Music. Its a music company. I manage the Label. I
also do other things like managing the content of his website , lot of
creative stuff etc .

Km Music has been Rahman 's dream, and he has mentioned this in a lot of his
interviews. The Kind of music he likes... Nowadays, if you see, all sort of
music is commercialised. and music sales is not that much. Basically, a
film which has 4 or 5 Kutthu songs are become the pick of the day ( This was
told by Raihannaji), and thats what sells ( told by Vijay) . There needs to
be a market for true Music Lovers, and Rahman shares that feeling, and this
label of his will give an opportunity for him as well as other musicians to
explore what is not within commercial parameters.

Almost from the time, Roja got released, I have been a fan. Actually, I dont
know, if I could take you through that journey, I used to tour Chennai , in
my vacation during my school days. That time Roja cassette had released, and
my uncle had bought me the same. On the return journey to Bombay, I didnt
listen to the Roja cassette. My sister was listening to it in her walkman.
And then she used to say, Its verynice; very nice . But I nevr heard it.
Then , I was surfing Tv Channels. Then I heard, Netru Illadha Maatram .
Then I went back to Roja, and thats how the journey began

Then in 1994, when I came to Chennai, I saw this movie Duet. The song
Anjali Anjali with awesome interludes and awesome song. In fact, right
after the movie, I made up my mind, that I want to meet Rahman. I dont know
if you would remember or not, when I called up the studio, ( the house ) ,
you answered the phone, and it was you who guided me to the place. So,
Anjali Anjali is a very good song. I also love the song, Lukka Chuppi and
want to dedicate to my mother. Rahman 's duet with Lataji. For the past some
years , you listen only to Love duets, and this is first of its kind, where
a mother and her son talk to each other in this manner, and its really nice.

*Experiences as a FAN *

At that time, there were only cassettes, because the Cds were expensive.
That too, I was in Bombay. Very rarely, do you get Tamil cassettes there.
There used to be a store called, Giri Stores, where we used to get Tamil
cassettes. and I was little far off from this place. At those times, we
never used to know , when Rahman is releasing a track, as the internet was
not that prevalent. I used to call the Giri stores almost daily, to find if
any new release of Rahman had got released. For getting a cassette worth Rs
50 /-, a lot of phone calls used to be made, and the shop keeper used to
reply, No Sir. nothing has come . But, I used to make it sure, that
whenever the cassette got released in Bombay, I used to go 45 minutes by
train, and get the cassette. In fact, right from Pudiya Mugam to
Sakkarakatti, I still remember, how and when I have gone to buy the
cassette. That was fantastic.

Its an interesting story. In 1994, when I came to Chennai, through you, I
met Rahman. After that, I wasnt been able to be in touch with him, as I was
in Bombay, and he was in Chennai. There were no cell phones or emails at
that time. After my studies, I took up a job. I was lucky enough, as in one
of my jobs, I used to frequently travel abroad. That was the time, in
2000-01, when Rahman was doing Bombay Dreams in London. so, one day, when I
was travelling to London. I saw Sir in Bombay Airport. I ran towards him,
and asked him, if he remembered me, when I had met him up in 94, and he
told, NO.. So, i thought that this was the opportunity, as no one would
disturb him, in the plane. No Directors, nor producers. For the full 8 hrs,
I spoke with him, in the similar manner as I am speaking with you now. I
told him abt how I bought his cassettes, Internet Community etc .

to compose it, told the director (Govind Nihalani), but Nihalani

add the song back to movie I could not understand what is the point of
adding it for only 2-3 weeks and why the heck not in the final cut on

Hi. This is Vijay. I am from Mumbai, just moved to Chennai. I was a big

for him now. I am based in Chennai now. Rahman has announced his new music
label, which is called KM Music. Its a music company. I manage the Label. I

 creative stuff etc .

Km Music has been Rahman 's dream, and he has mentioned this in a lot of
his interviews. The Kind of music he likes... Nowadays, if you see, all sort
of music is commercialised. and music sales is not that much.

Actually, I
dont know, if I could take you through that journey, I used to tour Chennai
, in my vacation during my school days. That time Roja cassette had
released, and my uncle had bought me the same. On the return journey to
Bombay, I didnt listen to the Roja cassette. My sister was listening to it
in her walkman. And then she used to say, Its verynice; very nice . But I
nevr heard it. Then , I was surfing Tv Channels. Then I heard, Netru
Illadha Maatram .

Towards 2000, when the Internet became popular, we formed a Fan Club on the
Internet. It was Gopal ( he is based in Bangalore ), who started this Fan

[arr] Vairamuthu Neram - ( Anbe Anbe - Jeans ; En kadhaley - Duet, Uyire - Bombay )

2008-07-23 Thread Vithur
In Vairamuthu Neram,

*En kadhaley ( Duet )*

When the tune of the song was ready,,, I asked Rahman, Enna pa ( Oh
brother ) , How come you composed such a tune. Only people who have been in
deep love can compose such tunes. . for which he replied, Yes . I am also
in Love. I am in love with my music. . The way, SPB had sung the lyrics,
gave me tears, and, I caught his hands , and thanked him so much. The
rendition of the song, gives such a wonderful effect, full of remorse and
feelings.

*Uyire ( Bombay )*

This song is the best song , that would have moved me in my life ( for the
lyrics which I have written ). The speciaility of this song, is the way, in
which it is done. Its like a situation, where the male singer comes and
sings and finishes it and goes. And then the female singer comes, and she
does her rendition and makes us feel, that she has done much more better
than the male singer. Its such a wonderful song, that it refreshes , I
listen to it.

*Ennavale ( Kaadhalan )*

A song, for which lyrics were liked me so much next to the old song (
Pavadai Dhavanayo ... Old song ) and which was in those lines is Ennavale
 from Kaadhalan...

* Anbe Anbe ( Jeans ) *
**
A song which I wrote after seeing the actress is this song. I saw her in the
stage. she was very simple. She was like a damsel, bathed in milk. There was
some depth in her beauty, and no pomp or show. There was some attraction.

Idhu varai paartha Pennil, Nee dhan Nee dhan azhagi a yadi

There was so much of beauty that made me write those lyrics.

discussed with Raihanaji is as follows :-

Km Music has been Rahman 's dream, and he has mentioned this in a lot of
his interviews. The Kind of music he likes... Nowadays, if you see, all sort
of music is commercialised. and music sales is not that much.

Actually, I
dont know, if I could take you through that journey, I used to tour Chennai
, in my vacation during my school days. That time Roja cassette had
released, and my uncle had bought me the same. On the return journey to
Bombay, I didnt listen to the Roja cassette. My sister was listening to it
in her walkman. And then she used to say, Its verynice; very nice . But I
nevr heard it. Then , I was surfing Tv Channels. Then I heard, Netru
Illadha Maatram .

Towards 2000, when the Internet became popular, we formed a Fan Club on the
Internet. It was Gopal ( he is based in Bangalore ), who started this Fan
Club . And world over members started joining, and the activities kind of
increased. Before, all this, we used to feel that it was we who are big fans
, and after coming into the community, we could realise, that there are much
more crazy fans than us. Every Interview of Rahman, Photos of rahman ( My
cupboard.. I used to paste photos ) , Cassettes, Cassette covers, Rare
songs, Ad Jingles, were there with everyone. This community was a good
 forum, for rare information exchange.

Vijay sings a song, Tere Bina . ( Very nice singing from Vijay... :-))

*Transformation into a Friend of Rahman *

Its an interesting story. In 1994, when I came to Chennai, through you, I
met Rahman. After that, I wasnt been able to be in touch with him, as I was
in Bombay, and he was in Chennai. There were no cell phones or emails at
that time. After my studies, I took up a job. I was lucky enough, as in one
of my jobs, I used to frequently travel abroad. That was the time, in
2000-01, when Rahman was doing Bombay Dreams in London. so, one day, when I
was travelling to London. I saw Sir in Bombay Airport. I ran towards him,
and asked him, if he remembered me, when I had met him up in 94, and he
told, NO.. So, i thought that this was the opportunity, as no one

H is calling card continues to be the chartbuster Chhaiya chhaiya and of
late, the title track of Chak De! India.

Then he seemed to have vanished, then he returned, then vanished. So
when I meet Sukhwinder Singh, I want to know whether he has become
calmer and cooler over the last few years? Music video To that, he
responds, I think so.. and that's because I can realise so many of my
dreams today. Not many people know this but I'm a huge Elvis Presley
fan. I follow him in every aspect of my life. One day, my friends asked
me if I could be like him and I thought why not. I intend to shoot an
Elvisinspired music video soon.

So after groaning and grumbling about the music reality shows, what's he
doing judging one? Ask that and he seems to be ready with a rehearsed
answer: I'm against reality shows in general because they're high on
drama.. and some channels haven't done them in the right spirit. I
decided to judge Star Voice of India 2 because I watched some episodes
last season and I think I can add some value. Agenda ho Singh's agenda?
Answer: I want to substitute the tension on the show with a relaxed
atmosphere. Contestants often cannot give their best because they're
scared.. but I want to make them feel calm and cool.

 En kadhaley ( Duet )

When the tune of the song was ready,,, I asked Rahman, Enna pa ( Oh
brother ) , How come you composed such a tune. Only people who have been
in
deep love can compose such tunes. . for which he replied, Yes . I am
also
in Love. I am in love with my music. . The way, SPB had sung the lyrics,
gave me tears, and, I caught his hands , and thanked him so much. The
rendition of the song, gives such a wonderful effect, full of remorse and
 feelings.

 Uyire ( Bombay )

This song is the best song , that would have moved me in my life ( for the
lyrics which I have written ). The speciaility of this song, is the way,
in
which it is done. Its like a situation, where the male singer comes and
sings and finishes it and goes. And then the female singer comes, and she
does her rendition and makes us feel, that she has done much more better
than the male singer. Its such a wonderful song, that it refreshes , I
 listen to it.

 Ennavale ( Kaadhalan )

A song, for which lyrics were liked me so much next to the old song (
Pavadai Dhavanayo ... Old song ) and which was in those lines is
Ennavale
  from Kaadhalan...

  Anbe Anbe ( Jeans )

A song which I wrote after seeing the actress is this song. I saw her in
the
stage. she was very simple. She was like a damsel, bathed in milk. There
was
some depth in her beauty, and no pomp or show. There was some attraction.

Idhu varai paartha Pennil, Nee dhan Nee dhan azhagi a yadi

There was so much of beauty that made me write those lyrics.

Entire music of Tehzeeb was experimental. pop ghazals, difficult arabic
urdu, and what was remaining was filled by this english incomprehensible
song.

If you listen to entire Tehzeeb album, you might realize that somebody
sort of roughshod ARR into doing all this. :0-)

Rozana from Lakeer is also a bad compostion but may be not the
 worst. I never liked it.

I also didn't like it much. In fact I had written that right then in
this forum when Lakeer was released.

But I think I had also written that ARR was trying to experiment by
giving a cheerleader song. And I guess cheerleading songs are that type
only.

Forget the current days of 20-20 when they are hiring the costliest MDs
of the world to compose. Pretty Zinta even approached ARR to compose the
song for her team but ARR refused as there was not much time.

So, chearleading songs originated from schools, colleges where students
were bringing out their creativity but they lacked on resources, and had
less time also, and some inexperience, so the outcome did never matched
up with a bollywood film song.

So, i think ARR might have tried to retain that simplicity in the song,
just composing a song that young, have-nots college boys and girls would
manage to compose.

And he did it well, and didn't give the polish to the song, so it looks
very banal, bare. But I think if you take into consideration the above
scenario, you might find that it is a different type of song.

I hope you guys will not mind discussing boss's weakest compositions.

Senyore belongs to the (Sri Lankan) Baila genre
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baila) and fitted in so perfectly in the movie.
It is most certainly one very cheerful track and was made with some interesting
Baila beats in true Rahman style. The sinhala lyrics in the song adds to the
sense of humour of the song and I guess if you don't understand Sinhala then it
prob won't be as fun as it truly is.

Dear Rahmaniacs,

VIJAY IYER ( our co-owner and moderator of Yahoogroups) was in air today ,
sharing his experiences with Raihanaji on Aaha FM 91.9. A brief of what he
discussed with Raihanaji is as follows :-

Hi. This is Vijay. I am from Mumbai, just moved to Chennai. I was a big fan
of AR, then became a friend of him, and its my good fortune that I work for him
now. I am based in Chennai now. Rahman has announced his new music label, which
is called KM Music. Its a music company. I manage the Label. I also do other
things like managing the content of his website , lot of creative stuff etc .

Km Music has been Rahman 's dream, and he has mentioned this in a lot of his
interviews. The Kind of music he likes... Nowadays, if you see, all sort of
music is commercialised.  and music sales is not that much. Basically, a film
which has 4 or 5 Kutthu songs are become the pick of the day ( This was told by
Raihannaji), and thats what sells ( told by Vijay) . There needs to be a market
for true Music Lovers, and Rahman shares that feeling, and this label of his
will give an opportunity for him as well as other musicians to explore what is
not within commercial parameters.

Almost from the time, Roja got released, I have been a fan. Actually, I dont
know, if I could take you through that journey, I used to tour Chennai , in my
vacation during my school days. That time Roja cassette had released, and my
uncle had bought me the same. On the return journey to Bombay, I didnt listen
to the Roja cassette. My sister was listening to it in her walkman. And then
she used to say, Its verynice; very nice . But I nevr heard it. Then , I was
surfing Tv Channels. Then I heard, Netru Illadha Maatram . Then I went back
to Roja, and thats how the journey began

Then in 1994, when I came to Chennai, I saw this movie Duet. The song
Anjali Anjali with awesome interludes and awesome song. In fact, right after
the movie, I made up my mind, that I want to meet Rahman. I dont know if you
would remember or not, when I called up the studio, ( the house ) , you
answered the phone, and it was you who guided me to the place. So, Anjali
Anjali is a very good song. I also love the song, Lukka Chuppi and want to
dedicate to my mother. Rahman 's duet with Lataji. For the past some years ,
you listen only to Love duets, and this is first of its kind, where a mother
and her son talk to each other in this manner, and its really nice.

Experiences as a FAN

At that time, there were only cassettes, because the Cds were expensive. That
too, I was in Bombay. Very rarely, do you get Tamil cassettes there. There used
to be a store called, Giri Stores, where we used to get Tamil cassettes. and
I was little far off from this place. At those times, we never used to know ,
when Rahman is releasing a track, as the internet was not that prevalent. I
used to call the Giri stores almost daily, to find if any new release of Rahman
had got released. For getting a cassette worth Rs 50 /-, a lot of phone calls
used to be made, and the shop keeper used to reply, No Sir. nothing has come
. But, I used to make it sure, that whenever the cassette got released in
Bombay, I used to go 45 minutes by train, and get the cassette. In fact, right
from Pudiya Mugam to Sakkarakatti, I still remember, how and when I have gone
to buy the cassette. That was fantastic..

Towards 2000, when the Internet became popular, we formed a Fan Club on the
Internet. It was Gopal ( he is based in Bangalore ), who started this Fan Club
. And world over members started joining, and the activities kind of increased.
Before, all this, we used to feel that it was we who are big fans , and after
coming into the community, we could realise, that there are much more crazy
fans than us. Every Interview of Rahman, Photos of rahman ( My cupboard.. I
used to paste photos ) , Cassettes, Cassette covers, Rare songs, Ad Jingles,
were there with everyone. This community was a good forum, for rare information
exchange.

Subject: [arr] Vairamuthu Neram - ( Anbe Anbe - Jeans ; En kadhaley - Duet,
Uyire - Bombay )

In Vairamuthu Neram,

En kadhaley ( Duet )

When the tune of the song was ready,,, I asked Rahman, Enna pa ( Oh brother )
, How come you composed such a tune. Only people who have been in deep love can
compose such tunes. . for which he replied, Yes . I am also in Love. I am in
love with my music. .  The way, SPB had sung the lyrics, gave me tears, and, I
caught his hands , and thanked him so much. The rendition of the song, gives
such a wonderful effect, full of remorse and feelings.

Uyire ( Bombay )

This song is the best song , that would have moved me in my life ( for the
lyrics which I have written ). The speciaility of this song, is the way, in
which it is done. Its like a situation, where the male singer comes and sings
and finishes it and goes. And then the female singer comes, and she does her
rendition and makes us feel, that she has done much more better than the male
singer. Its such a wonderful song, that it refreshes , I listen to it.

Ennavale ( Kaadhalan )

A song, for which lyrics were liked me so much next to the old song ( Pavadai
Dhavanayo ... Old song ) and which was in those lines is Ennavale from
Kaadhalan...

 Anbe Anbe ( Jeans )

A song which I wrote after seeing the actress is this song.

Senyore belongs to the (Sri Lankan) Baila genre
(http://en.wikipedia ..org/wiki/ Baila) and fitted in so perfectly in the
movie. It is most certainly one very cheerful track and was made with some
interesting Baila beats in true Rahman style. The sinhala lyrics in the song
adds to the sense of humour of the song and I guess if you don't understand
Sinhala then it prob won't be as fun as it truly is.

I am confused because my 16 years of ARR experience is has deserted me.

The problem is: I am not able to find Rahman's SIGNATURE in Pappu Can't
Dance of JTJYN and Hawa, sun Hawa of Ada.

Pappu got hit like anything and it feels great that our man did a
Muqqala or a hello doctor again. Hawa, sun hawa is so calm and cool, so
soothing, subtle like Water songs, it is a pleasure to listen to it.

In rest of the songs of these two albums, I could find the telltale ARR
effect, but not in these two songs. I feel that these songs could have
been as well composed by anyone else. No, not copy, no inspiration, no
nothing. Just a genre, a level, just that others have given songs of
that type in the past.

If I am still not clear, you listen to first 1 second of Tu Hi Rey, and
you can tell it it ARR's. No, not memory, but the effect, the sound, the
level. Nobody but ARR could have created it. Nobody could in last 10
years, even with inspiration from ARR.

I have listened these two songs many times, still, I could not identify
that ARR effect in these two.

Could anyone help me here.

Which part of Pappu and Hawa hold the telltale Signature that ARR is
known for and that no one else could create so far?

At places, there is lip sync mismatch that is clearly visible for about

thats so true u know i really liked I Wanna be Free number...
excellent experimental song by ARR. Dun think anyone could compose
such daring number love the part Anupama goes Fredom.. ..
Freeedom... .. with that electronic instrument waving tru the
 speakers... :).

Rozanna too was a very peppy number.. love the energy in that song...
and the tune... very very catchy.: )

I long time ago (about 10 years ago) I had read an
 interview with

Rahman that basically said that the song he liked the least among his

own compositions was Toofan ki Raat from Thakshak. He did not want

to compose it, told the director (Govind Nihalani), but Nihalani

insisted. After a lot of back and forth between them, Rahman agreed-

but did not like the song.

it is more noise than a song. it has absolutely no signature of ARR.

Rozana from Lakeer is also a bad compostion but may be not the

   worst. I never liked it.

Re: [arr] Film music sales rising

2008-07-23 Thread Thineshan
the only reason why it was noticed in the first place was because
someone said its by ARR. after people listened to it the first time,
they all made up their mind that it is not by ARR and thats when it
was forgotten.

So, there are only 5 new albums released and songs from 5 albums are
topping the chart. How big a chart does Tamil music industry maintain?

 Some reporting indiaglitz does. :-)

btw, what happened to the Good Morning Tamil Nade? I guess once is was
found that the song is not by ARR, it must have gone unnoticed ever
 since

Mubin, I appreciate being on the same list as A.R. Rahman and Shankar

music has been lifted. I do know him personally, but he is certainly
not known for his originality. Well, as far as Rahman and

Re: [arr] Where is Rahman's SIGNATURE in Pappu and Hawa songs?

2008-07-23 Thread Thulasi Ram
answer to ur question in the subject - throughout the song

On Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 12:40 PM, V S Rawat [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

   Hi Gomzy, Mahima and Vinayakam,

 let me give one parallel.

You must have noticed that the starting part of Hawa sun hawa has
 similar arrangement as in

 - Sunta hai Mera Khuda (Pukar)
 - Maan tujhe Salam (Vandemataram)

That is drum beats on a soft, fluid, vibrating, background, wavy, sound
 sort of.

Now, listen to Sunta hai Mera Khuda or Maan tujhe Salam, and you can
make out in flat 2 seconds (or less) that it is ARR's. Nobody else could
 do it till now.

But, that same characteristic signature sort of feeling is not so
noticeable in Hawa sun hawa, i think. One has to strive to find that it
 is ARR's.

Such a lovely song hawa sun hawa is. Still, I feel some songs by other
MDs had been there not so far below. Of course, no match as such but
somewhat that type. btw, it could be the common singers using similar
 span of their voices.

That is why I thought that lack of a clearcut ARR signature is causing
his songs to loose their high, unique level and sounding similar to
 other MD's work.

The problem is: I am not able to find Rahman's SIGNATURE in
  Pappu Can't

Pappu got hit like anything and it feels great that our man did a
Muqqala or a hello doctor again. Hawa, sun hawa is so calm and
  cool, so
soothing, subtle like Water songs, it is a pleasure to listen to it.

In rest of the songs of these two albums, I could find the
  telltale ARR

  inspiration, no
nothing. Just a genre, a level, just that others have given songs of
   that type in the past.

If I am still not clear, you listen to first 1 second of Tu Hi

you can tell it it ARR's. No, not memory, but the effect, the
  sound, the
level. Nobody but ARR could have created it. Nobody could in last 10
years, even with inspiration from ARR.

I have listened these two songs many times, still, I could not
  identify
that ARR effect in these two.

   Could anyone help me here.

Which part of Pappu and Hawa hold the telltale Signature that ARR is
known for and that no one else could create so far?
