Re: [arr] Bhansali and ARR may never collaborate

2007-09-26 Thread Gomtesh Upadhye
Its only been repeated what ARR told a long time ago. ARR and SLB will never
work together.
ARR had agreed to work for Bajirao Mastani (or was it saawariya?) when SLB
announced that
ARR would compose the music for Black . ARR was surprised cuz he wasnt even
consulted. ARR
withdrew from the other project as well.

Thats a fake. Rather thats a song sung and composed by a group member a long
time ago. If you observe carefully , the lyrics are the same as Vande
mataram..but he sure has one strikingly similar voice :)

Its not true
At the begining yes its Rahman who compose song for his projects..
Nowadays not all the song done by him He just do touch up on the tune
made by others..
Example the song *Mayil Irege* in the movie *Anbe Aruyire* the tune
composed by RAFI* (SINGAPORE ARTIST).
80% of the song is done by Rafi and the 20% was touch up by Rahman..
Thats why nowadays we cant feel the rahmans Touch in some of his song..
This is the Truth.

*Rafi is the one who sing the song *Un Siripinil Pon siripinil *from the
movie (*Patchai Kili Muthu Charam)*

Rahman not being creative, if Rahman is not creative, I don't know
what MD in India today is?! Geniuses like Rahman and Ilayaraja are
a rarity. Who in the world could come up with a score like Roja in
his first film itself?!!! I wasted my time thinking that the
article was justifiable, which it is, but his last sentence is not.

Personally, I found Kavitha Krishnamurthy's argument stuck in my
head more, and I can understand that more. But I agree with the
criticism that half-backed singers are a doom for the playback
industry.

Coming to Rahman, admittedly he did bring these technologies. I
have cringed at some of the singing of his singers. But for all
that, there is no one who was introduced in the last 15 years, with
creativity of Rahman.

mistake... Come on Rahman is born to be a music director... and he had been

18 to 21 he was working as a keyboard player with my father and various
other leading music directors like IR, etc.( as duleep kumar)... and then in

On 13 Mar 2007 19:16:02 -0700, Karthik S <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

  Rahman...'stocky'???

Besides, I don't necessarily agree with our man when he says we need
to make something they're accustomed to, to win. In that case, many

beautiful, Croching Tiger HD or even this year's fantastic Mexican
film, Pan's Labyrinth!

Karthik

http://uk.reuters.com/article/entertainmentNews/idUKDEL20931520070313

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Top Bollywood musician A.R. Rahman said on
Tuesday he was working to create music that strikes a chord with
Western audiences so that Indian film music could one day win an Oscar
award.

Three of Rahman's compositions were shortlisted for an Academy award
this year, but none of them eventually made it to the final Best
Original Song category.

The 41-year-old composer blames this on the failure to create music
that western audiences could identify with.

"We have to give something which they are accustomed to and then the
chances of bagging the award increases," Rahman, known for
experimenting with new instruments and sound, said on the sidelines of
a news conference.

"We have to create music which is popular there."

Rahman was chosen by composer Andrew Llyod Webber to compose music for
his stage production "Bombay Dreams" in 2002, a runaway success which
brought the Indian composer international fame.

Though happy with his songs just being shortlisted for the Oscars, the
stocky, reclusive musician, who first found Bollywood fame in 1992 and
has since created hit music for several films, said Indian film music
was not good enough to catch the western ear.

"We have to understand that the song we create here, the popular song,
is alien to the western audience."

keyboard and his face. It was really great to watch him playing piano.

Didn't realize until now the sad version of Vennilave song is done by
Shankar Mahadevan.

Does anyone have that song? It sounded even better than the Hariharn's
happy version.

While we're at it, I'm also interested in the song from Jeans, when one

Bengaluru from my sister, I guess, I am at par with my RAHMAN

I did not know that WATER CD has also some bonus tracks from Guru,
Lagaan etc ? Why ? I thought, they could have added the BGMs of that
movie, even though made by Michael Danna, they are good, almost as made
by Rahman himself.

It was also nice to see KM MUSIC's name on the PFMB CD. So, KM Music's

   Hi all !

AR Rahman has done it again. His latest offering as UN Theme song for

the global suffering that poverty stricken nations are enduring.

I personally recall this song when AR Rahman performed it in his Bangalore
concert and ever since I have been waiting for this track to be out in
public, as a peace and goodwill anthem of international standards.

The track is out in the market as CD single complemented by an
instrumental version of the same. Both the versions are a joy to listen to
and I strongly recommend you to pickup a copy from the stores rather than
download it from the net.

As an ardent Rahman fan myself, I present two more versions for your
listening pleasure

   - *Unmixed and Unplugged –* No beats, no drums, just vocals and
   strings. Sounds great!

   - *Karaoke - Sing a long version –* This is for your singing

RE:[ARR], DiD you observe the songs carefully?

Hello Group,

did you guys observe?

1.Aiye hairathe is in small pieces here and there before it actually starts
off. But did anyone observe the dhum dhara dhum dhara piece??
ARR sings dhum dhara dhum dhara masth masth ( as opposed to dhum dhara dhum
dhara chashm chashm in the audio).

2.Also there is another piece ARR sings( do not remember the lyrics ) during
the train scene. Its the same tune as "Na ja ,chakari ke mare"

3.The kids sing Jage hain ( without instruments).

The above pieces would go into our BGM collection as soon as the DVDs are
out ;)

[arr] RE : GURU REVIEW ( For Thulasi and group)

2007-01-12 Thread Gomtesh Upadhye

Hello Group,

I just finished watching the movie.let me put up the points one by one,

The movie starts off superb. The photography is breath taking.Mayya mayya
plays when credits roll. The locations and the quality of the movie surpasses
anything that Indian Cinema has ever seen.Abhishek is brilliant and
Aishwarya is surprising good too (i dont fancy her much).

The whole crew gets everything right in the first half.A R Rahman is at his
usual best with fulte pieces of barso re haunting you for
sometime.Theoccasional humor is very good and the audience appreciates
everything thats
coming in.

But but after the interval is what is a little disturbing. AB matures as an
actor at this point but the script weakens. And hopelessly at times. Mani
Sir, who had the audience glued to the seats fails to keep them from getting
restless.

No major events are depicted in Guru's bhais life and this will be the
downfall of Guru if it happens. The camera work (especially during the court
scene) gets a little shaky which was not actually required.

If this is not enough , ARR goes a little out of course himself. The Guru
theme by Blaaze is too repetitive if not annoying at times. Also the back
ground score during the court scene should have been there at all.

Mani Ratnam fails to use the same grip he had in the first half. This was
the problem with yuva too.He needs to concentrate to end the movie with the
same brilliance at which he starts off.

Kudos to all the actors (Mithun da is brilliant). A decent performance by
Maddy and Vidya.

All said Guru is a good movie but not extraordinary. Will it be a hit? I
will be pleasantly surprised if it does.

PS: Hopefully my criticism will have an adverse effect and you all love the
movie ;)

Re: [arr] ‘Guru is about rediscovering life’

2007-01-08 Thread Gomtesh Upadhye
made the song first because I have been feeling very strongly about this
for quite some time.
You know India is really coming up as a country but at the same time you
are having these
suicides by farmers and there is so much of poverty all around. That
inspired me to make this
song. Blaaze and I have sung it. Then the United Millennium Development
Cause came in. They
have this project of eradicating poverty from this world by 2015 and so
they thought of using
the Pray for me brother song like an anthem for that.

Then, Universal Music and Nokia followed…

Yes, Universal Music is coming out with the song. We wanted to make a
video for Pray for me
brother and when I told some of my friends in London, they introduced me
to Nokia. It is the
first ever video in the mobile cinemascope format. Here the frame becomes
vertical as opposed
to the horizontal film frame format. My friend Bala (of Bharatbala
productions) has made the
video. He's used a lot of skyscrapers to show the extremities with the
poor.

You sang Pray for me brother for the first time at your New Year's Eve
concert in Mumbai. What
was the response there?

The response was very good. Before I performed the song, we played a
little audio-visual where
we showed how billions are used for wars while just a fraction is required
to feed people.
Everyone was clapping after the song and in such a hyper mood like you
have on New Year's Eve,
it was good.

Besides that song, how did the concert go?

I wanted to do this concert because it was a great outlet for Pray for me.
The other good thing
that happened was Nelly Furtado. We were supposed to work together before
but it didn't work
out. Now I hear she's told the press that she wants to work with me. We
have to do a project,
which is good for me, good for her.

Just a few days to go for the Oscar nomination list... What is your gut
feeling?

Well, I am ready to be surprised, in a pleasant way (laughs). I have heard
that there have been
articles about my three songs in magazines there, like Variety. Rang De
Basanti is, of course,
there but Water is a very important film because it did very well at the
North American
box-office. So, let's see…

Why did you choose to send these three particular songs, Chhan chhan
(Water), Luka chhupi (Rang
De Basanti) and Khalbali (Rang De Basanti)?

Chhan chhan is very important in the film as it shows the exuberance of
characters who are
facing a crisis. For the Rang De songs it was very important that I chose
songs which have been
performed by me. Luka chhupi is special not only because Lataji has sung
it but it also proves
to be a counterpoint in the film.

What else are you working on as of now?

It's all work in progress. So, it's premature to talk about them. But you
will soon get to hear
about Golden Age, Shekhar Kapur's sequel to Elizabeth and Ashutosh
Gowariker's Jodha Akbar.

Re: [arr] Rahmans track for Tsunami

2006-12-15 Thread Gomtesh Upadhye

Hello Raghu,

Welcome to the group. FYI, Rahman HAS NOT composed the Donasian song. He is
the string arranger ( dunno what the means!) and that he features in the
video. Thanks,

Gomzy

Hi folks , I am new to this group, as old as just a day. I have been a
hardcore fan of Rahman's redentions. Hoping this group will enhance my
knowledge about His Music and His contributions to the world of music.
To start with, i came across this link through another Rahman man. Its
quite old, and am sure many of you may already know about this Tsunami song
he composed.
http://www.donasian.org/video.htm
Just wanted to share this with the group. Honestly ( no offence meant )
the song didnt impress me, knowing the intensity of music Rahman has in him.
I felt the Lyrics (sepecially the english part) is too casual,,, and the
video could have been made better by including more shots of the actual pain
experienced by tsunami victims.
Nevertheless, its a great thought, and full credits to Rahman for
constantly thinking on these grounds.
cheers
