*So many songs are being lifted. What do you feel about that?*

For *Woh Lamhe* and *Aadat*, Mukesh Bhatt bought the rights and I got the
credit for only recreating them, which clearly means I was not involved in
any controversy. The composer was given his due.

As far as lifting tunes is concerned, it is a personal thing. For me, it is
more important to be honest and sincere to my own self and expression.

I listen to other music and get ideas. I am a big fan of Quincy Jones [
Images http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=quincy+jones ],
John Williams, James Horner [
Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=james+horner],
Haynes Demour, MM Kreem and AR Rahman [
Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=ar+rahman ].
We should learn from them and use our own expression. If I cannot relate to
my work, I don't expect anyone else to. I won't lift -- I can say that.

*Which composer do you like the most?*

My father is my idol. Besides him, I am fond of Viju Shah and A R Rahman's
[ Images http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=a+r+rahman ]
music.

http://www.rediff.com/movies/2007/may/30mithoon.htm

Among the remixes and rip-offs doing the rounds in Bollywood, there are a
few which stand out. The adaptation of*Woh Lamhe [
Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=woh+lamhe
]* and *Aadat* by 22-year-old *Mithoon Sharma* provide one such example.
The songs from a couple of years ago are still a rage.
http://ads.rediff.com/5c/inmoviesA.rediff.com/movies-article.htm/2011618827/x15/default/empty.gif/334f4e50696b7943494e594141583433

He followed these up with his soulful compositions for *Anwar *and *Tere Bin
*for* Bas Ek Pal [
Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=bas+ek+pal
]*. Though the former failed to impress moviegoers, the two songs Mithoon
did in the soundtrack -- *Maula mere* and *Toh se naina lage*-- left an
indomitable mark.

Now, after signing a deal with T-Series, the talented composer has made his
first independent soundtrack for *The Train*. The
reviewshttp://www.rediff.com/movies/2007/may/21train.htm speak
for themselves.

In an interview with *Patcy N*, Mithoon relives his way to rising stardom.
Excerpts:

*What was the briefing for The Train?*

I sat with the directors of the movie, Raksha Mistry and Hasnain
Hyderabadwala, who read out the script to me. I found the story very
beautiful and wanted the music to compliment it.

Every song had to have purpose -- like the song *Woh Ajnabee [
Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=ajnabee
]*, which I made from the story. In the story, Emraan and his wife Sayali
Bhagat [ Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=sayali+bhagat
]
are going through a rough patch in their marriage, and that's when he finds
peace and love with a stranger (Geeta Basra [
Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=geeta+basra
]).
Hence, *Woh Ajnabee*.

*What genre does the music of The Train belongs to?*

I am quite bad at labeling music in any genre. I have no set rules. I just
see to it that the music is inspired from the film. For example, for *Anwar* I
wanted central Indian music, and for *Bas Ek Pal* urban.

*You've sung for The Train. Have you always been into singing?*

It was never decided that I would sing any song for *The Train*. I was ready
with the music for *Woh Ajnabee* and was in search of a singer when Emraan
started growing his hair for *Awarapan*. So we had to shoot the song before
he grew his hair -- to keep the continuity. I then sang the song and got it
shot earlier.

*Why not Atif, your favourite singer?*

There were two reasons I didn't take Atif. Firstly, I didn't think any song
would suit his voice and secondly, when I knew T-series was in the picture,
I couldn't ask Atif because he has a contract with Tips.

*How was it working with Shyam Bajaj [
Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=bajaj
 ]?
*
Shyam Bajaj's movies have great music. He gives creative space to the
composer and never interferes. After my father, the person I would take
guidance from is him.

*What sort of response are you getting for The Train?*

The response is universal -- they all like it. I have put in a lot of effort
in this first complete album of mine. I have tried to give a varied sound as
possible and so far the response has been good. Recently, I had gone to
Dubai [ Images http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=dubai ] for
the promotion of *The Train* and I was happy to know that my music topped
the charts there. *Woh Ajnabee*, especially, is topping the charts over
there.

*What made you get into music?*

My family has been in this field -- I belong to the third generation. My
grandfather, Pandit Ramprasad Sharma, is a renowned music teacher. He taught
nearly 5000 pupils.

Does anyone know any story related to this song (if there is any). I dont
think 'commerical samples' containing animal voices exist. How did ARR
record the voices of these animals?

Shekhar Kapoor was long time friend of Heath Ledger the actor who is no

Heath Ledger was rocking as the Joker in the Dark knight.

Dear Shekhar

I hope that Buddha comes to be at last. I was thrilled to read (elsewhere,
the other day) that Rahman had been involved with the music. The story of
Buddha, your direction, the visuals, which if they are like the still you
posted in your Budhha section, must be spectacular, and Rahman's music. What
can I say, other than I hope this comes to be.

To me, if there was a relative weakness in ARR's compositions of late, it
would be some of his dance oriented tracks.Papu, Latoo, Shano, etc. etc.
Notice the word relative. Some of these songs did become quite popular and
they are catchy, but for me, they represented a skippable track in the
 soundtrack.

With Blue, I was quite afraid prior that there would be another Papu or
Shano in the mix, a track that I would tap my foot to, but not really find
much else to latch onto, hence another skipper. However, when I heard tracks
like Chiggy, Aaj Dil, and especially Fiqrana, I was pleasantly surprised
that ARR hit the right combo for me this time.

About Fiqrana, for me, it's one of ARR's strongest dance/groove oriented
tracks ever. It's got everything that I enjoy about tracks like
these.incredible groove rhythm, sweet sound effects, seamless
transitions, and to me most importantly, good melody and good chords. The
chords and melody in this song really take it to another level IMO.

When I hear this song, I get the same good feeling that I get when I hear
Chaiya Chaiya. I'm not saying it's as good of a song as Chaiya, but the
same elements are there to make for an incredibly enjoyable listening
experience. Fiqrana totally energizes me, gets me motivated, pumps me up,
but also has endearing melodic hooks which linger on much after in my mind.
To me, that's keyit's not just another ordinary dance trackthe song
has got some soul and depth too.

 Yaaa...Fiqrana! TOTALLY ROCKS!

The Continuum also provides two additional parameters for the sound: it is

and position on the Z-Axis (vertically) corresponds to a change in

On the eve of Jagjit Singh Live in
 Concerthttp://movies.indiainfo.com/2009/01/28/0901280633_gazals.html#
  (at
the Shanmukhananda Auditorium), the veteran exponent of ghazals
 rues the end
of their era in Hindi films.

Jagjit is not singing any film songs currently because he feels
 there is a
lack of taste on the part of today's filmmakers and music
 directors. They
don't know what ghazals are all about and they lack good taste in
 music.
What does AR Rahman know about ghazals? He will never use a
 ghazal in his
films. All they do is pick up tunes from the West, he says.

He criticises contemporary music directors for ruining the
 Indianness of
sound. Earlier, in the 60s and 70s, 90% of the music was based
 on the
ghazal. Today, there's no poetry phrasing, it's all Western and
 the language
is tapori -- a mix of English and Hindi. What kind of lyrics are

Yet the popularity of the form endures. He says, My audience has
 only
grown over the years. I always improvise and add variations to my
 old songs
on stage. Every ghazal is re-born on that day.

Interestingly, Jagjit only performs for a cause. On January 29,
 at the DNA
and Rotary concert, he will perform to provide midday meals for
 children. He
says, I never give dates to concerts which are just money-making
 measures.
I want to give back to the society. So I give my dates only to
 charity
   concerts.

 on your back

If happens everywhere. It's the nature of the beast. Jealousy, envy,
whatever it is. When you're the top of the game, THE top, you will
have shots coming your way. It is to be expected.

Rahman is the best. He is receiving lots of attention, praise, etc.
The comments by Mr. Singh to me are not surprising given that I knew
that one of these days, someone would open their mouth and say
something negative about ARR. It was bound to happen. And it WILL
probably happen again. Someone will speak to the media and say
something sarcastic, or negative about Rahman, similar to what Ismail
Darbar said about Rahman a few years ago.

What bothered me about Mr. Singh's comments is that even if he didn't
mean to attack Rahman himself, the way his comments came out sounded
very accusatory and insulting, essentially saying, What Rahman has
accomplished is really not that great given that he has not composed
ghazals since ghazals are the ultimate and superior form of music.
His tone was arrogant and of superiority. Why couldn't he have just
said I would love for Rahman to compose ghazals since films today
don't have a lot of them. Rahman is talented and versatile enough to
compose ghazals. It is obvious that Mr. Singh has issues related to
anger and bitterness over his life and the fact that he is not getting
many film assignments. A person of his age and stature shouldn't be
making such impulsive and blunt remarks. I would expect that from a
junior artist or someone much younger.

When people make such comments about how Rahman uses only Western
tunes, did they ever hear his soundtracks such as Water, Earth,
Lagaan, Bose? What about songs like Piya Ho, Naina Neer, Na Shiqua
Hota, Mujphe Toofan, Sarfarosh Ki Tamanna, Desh Ki Mitti, Ghooparani,
Tere Bina, etc. etc.? You would get the feeling that they think that
Rahman only composes songs like Pappu all the time!!

Well u from the way ppl talk, one can know how they are . I have never
seen Rahman speak in that tone ..
he is known for his calmness in speech,

I once remember recently watching Subhash Ghai speaking where he mentioned
that at times he gets angry over the pace, at which Rahman works, but said
that the instant he looks at Rahman and the way he speaks, he is instantly
cooled down ... and he also said even though it was time consuming, finally
the songs have come very well and it pays to wait ;-)Rahman rocks

   Comment 1Comment 1Comments
Composer A.R. Rahman on the Sounds of `Slumdog Millionaire' and
 Being
   M.I.A.'s Idol

   Photo: Getty Images

In India, fans love A.R. Rahman almost as we love David
 Archuleta —
and he's reportedly sold a few more albums: 100 million records
 and
200 million cassettes. A huge pop star in South Asia, he's famous
 for
scoring Indian classics like Roja and Lagaan (among the dozens of
other films) — and he's recently begun to cross over into
 Hollywood
with Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical
Bombay Dreams. We spoke with him about his Slumdog Millionaire
 score —
which Fox Searchlight is pushing for an Oscar — and his
 collaboration
   with M.I.A.

How'd you hook up with Danny Boyle?
I literally had to leave another film to do this. When Danny met
 me,
he said, I've heard a lot of your stuff' and he talked about it.
That's about the first time I've heard a compliment from a Western
director, apart from Andrew Webber. He's a good human being.

Was it different working with him than a Bollywood director?
Usually, it's very different. Danny used my stuff in a very
 different
way. I really loved the film, so I would compose pieces to fit the
images, so I would do a lot of templates. With this, there's not
 many
cues in the film. Usually a big film has 130 cues. This had just
seventeen or eighteen: the end credits, beginning credits, that
 stuff.

   What were you going for?
A lot of things. I had to do stuff from modern India, eighties
 Hindi
film soundtracks, mixing modern India and the old India.

   What did Boyle suggest?
He wanted something very pulse-y. He said he hated sentiment,
 hated
cello. No cellos! He said, Never put a cello in my film — he was
funny. I worked fast, like him. It took two months of planning,
 two
weeks of completing. Usually it takes six months with the musical
   films I'm doing in India.

The soundtrack really drives the film. That seems like something
 Boyle
has in common with Bollywood. Do you think so?
What's good about [Boyle] is that he likes how Indian films mix
 music.
You push it and it comes out. We wanted it edgy, upfront. He said
every piece of music was going to be a piece by itself. Normally
 some
directors suppress music — they always want the effects to be
 loud and
the music to be softer. Danny wanted it loud.

And you worked with M.I.A. on a new track.
We met before but never worked before. M.I.A., she's a real
powerhouse. Somebody played me her CD and I thought, Who's this
 girl?
She came here and knew all my work, had followed my work for
 ages. I
said Cut the crap, this my idol crap. You have to teach me. We
started working in India, then we e-mailed the track back and
 forth.
She did the vocals in England. I did the rest in India.

How does the film's Mumbai compare to the real thing?
For me, it's not about India at all. It's about human emotion,
 how we
suppress so much and it all comes out. It's a human film, not
 about
India at all. The soundtrack isn't about India or Indian culture.
 The
story could happen anywhere: China, Brazil, anywhere. Who Wants
 to Be
a Millionaire is on in every damn country.

A.'Dear Mama' by 2Pac, 'Warriors in Peace' by A R Rahman, Both these songs

Q.Inroads into Tamil films. How did that come about?
 A. Prayers and more prayers. Sivamani introduced me to Mr.A R Rahman. And
about a year later, my wife mentioend it to him again. And though I was
comfortable in English, Mr.Rahman truly got me into the Tamil vibe and its
been magical ever since. We tried somthing on the 'Dating' song in Boys. my

conceptualised and presented the track, finally truly made me aware that if
done correctly, this may just work. And the response was freat. Amen.

Both from the music release function of Vennila Kabaddi Kuzhu that

In one hes seen next to Gowtam Menon and the other next to the hero(new

A Subtle mention.. Leaves out of my book - Suhasini's monthly article.

When we send films from the Madras Talkies office to any of the
international film festival screenings, the common practive used to be to
remove the songs and then send them. But that has changed. These days if we
do that, people call from Cannes or Berlin asking why that beautiful song

  Hi All,
Just thought I would share my one as well.

I never knew my mom even knew who ARR was untill one day.
She was watching television in the afternoon one day and me and my brother
 were just
 doing something in another room.
Suddenly she called us and said they are showing the muslim guy on the
 television.
 I asked which muslim guy?
She said the guy about whom you and your brother talk all the times.
Me and my brother were stunned completely.
We ran and it was really ARR.
We asked her, 'What else do you know about his music?'
She said all the songs that you guys keep listening all the day are of same
 kind and they
are different than the usual songs on Radio and television.

Me and my brother were in shock that day and completely stunned.
Hail ARR and secret powers of him.

A person from a area should take charge of the collection of data as

I would request all chennai fans to take this up seriously. We can do

Re: [arr] Arr Fans - Rajni Fans - Balancing problem - why ?

2007-04-05 Thread logesh kum-arr

well said , Sarathy ,

I feel it is better to leave Rahman experiment , and come out with his own
creative work rather than to force him on to a genre of music composition.

I believe only Rahman or Deva(Only for Rajni movies) cud do justice to his
movies with music,
Rajni had excellent music for his films in the past like Padayapa, Muthu and
Basha etc ...

My personal opinion is that
Best two songs from Rahman to Rajni
are
1.Oruvan oruvan mudhalali, Initial orchestration is evergreen, I just love
it from my heart.
2.Vetrikodi kattu ..Excellent western and folk mix , no one except rahman
can do this magic,
this one is so philosophical(Typical words for
Rajni), so western kind of new remix trend in indian music.

Regards
Logesh A

On 04 Apr 2007 21:05:12 -0700, Sarathy S [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Another angle -

Why this happens mostly to a rajni movie with arr - Fans with mixed
feelings. Rajni sir do not want to risk his image with young grand sounds
created by Arr. And arr is more sophisticated with his ideas he has to come
down bit to create rajni tunes not arr tunes. Whenever rajni works in a
movie the trend continues in music right from 1980s. From 90s music in his
movies reflect it is also rajni's choice to have those tunes not just dir.
prod. choice. One of the reasons, majority of his fans are seniors from
good old days of rajni right from 1980s. I really doubt whether this present
younger generation how far they can enjoy rajni's taste of music is what
reflected thro rahman fans who r not happy with such tunes or if it is rajni
fans who r not happy then they all seniors to them rahmans sophisticated
approach or experiment is too much to go gaga. Either rajni sir shld give
complete freedom to rahman to feel the magic or Rahman can better need not
show his sophistication go very very simplest to make rajni fans feel haa
this is wat v need thats enough. Result Arrs music in rajni movies are a
kind of half for rajni fans half for arr fans. To such fans a balancing
problem of not able to enjoy completely or not able to dislike totally.

2007-03-26 Thread logesh kum-arr

Hi Nithin,

It is good job u did ,
I was totally disappointed when I saw some comments made jus against Rahman
without any valid reason,
these guys I believe are not true music fans ,
for that matter they may hate Rahman , but one can never hate his music ,
else it wud be like punishing oneself or going dumb , without praising the
melody.

I too accept that rahman has given bad albums, but i believe those are just
5 % of his entire career ,
can you name a person who has delivered 100 %,
every human makes mistakes but when he on his excellence , no one can beat
him in those technology
and the unique sounds that he creates.

I am not jus a fan of Rahman , but a true music lover too,
i admire other songs too,
but on Rahman , i believe he is one step more than any Indian music
directors.

Well you cannot keep the truth hidden for long,
My dream was that Guru be all good and pleasant to hear rather than , the
usual stuff going around in the
hindi music, and he kept that, it was of different genre,
I think there many music directors who are good in different stuffs ,
but for Rahman he knows that just one narrow regional is not enough
as he expores and explores
and I simply admire the wide range of genre he has created.

If you love good music you ought to love what his piano creates.
everything else is just illusion.
for everything time will answer.

as usual , on hearing it twice or thrice ..
i just love the songs ..i cant sleep without hearing atleast 5 times a day.

actually the songs are not bad , and they will deffinitely be a big hit , an
i am 120 % sure about that.
But still I am expex\cting 150 % innovation from Rahman.

Sahana song is simple and too good, sunlight song is i believe , quite
new to Tamil music and infact new to indian music ,
and it is an inovation from rahman.

One piece of memory that has lingered in me from my visit to New
 York City
a few months earlier is a middle aged woman who sat under a
 skyscraper in a
shady corner of Times Square clutching a tiny board in her weak
 hand, which
read - *I lost my job. I have two kids. I don't have anyone
 else. Please
   help me*.
If there is one language common across the world it's the
 language of
suffering and tears - be it a remote village in Somalia or a hip
 center of
America. That's one reason why Bharatbala, the producer of this
 music video,
chose to shoot *Pray For Me Brother* amidst the skyscrapers of
 Los
Angeles, rather than a war ravaged African village.
A.R. Rahman's *Pray For me Brother* is an initiative by the A.R.
 Rahman
Foundation to collect funds for the UN Millennium Development
 Program aimed
at eradicating poverty by the year 2015. Rahman spins his magic
 once again
with a music and lyrics that is sure to have a global appeal.
 Add the video
to the song, and you get a real treat to your soul - all for a
 noble cause.
As is always the case with Rahman, the music grows on you.
The video for the song has been shot in Los Angeles, with
 towering
skyscrapers at one side showing the great economic strides the
 world has
made and beggars taking street corners on the other -
 symbolizing the idea
that suffering is universal, irrespective of which part of the
 world you
   live in.
The video is filled with symbolism and emotions. Human suffering
 has no
color. And it is only pertinent that the entire video
 symbolizing human
suffering be shot in Black and White. Los Angeles being the
 location, the
video has a Krumper dancing through the rap part of the song.
 Krumpinghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krumpingis a form of dance
that originated in the African-American community of
South Central Los Angeles - a rather sinister and aggressive
 dance form,
intended as an expression of anger or a release of pent-up
 emotion through
violent, exaggerated, and dramatic moves. (Definition Source:
 Wikipediahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krumping
   .)
The music has a mix of traditional western and rap. And the very
composition is intended at reaching out to a global audience,
 the universal
message being - Are you searching for a reason to be kind...
 and binding
this message with another universal emotion of Prayer. Rahman's
melancholic voice and Blaaze's rap couldn't have merged better.
 To enable
access to the video across all media including mobiles and PDAs,
 the entire
video has been shot in Vertical-Cinemascope, rather than the
 usual
Horizontal picture. At times it is a pain to your eyes watching
 a *
vertical* video, given that most of the audience would actually
 be
watching it on television, rather than their mobile phones.
The DVD contains the song Pray For Me Brother and The Making
 of Pray
For Me Brother featuring A.R. Rahman, Bharatbala and Blaaze
 taking us
through the conceptualization of the album, purpose and their
 experiences
while making the music and shooting the video. Given the non-
 commercial
nature of the album and the cause behind it, it is a must-have
 for anyone
   who appreciates good music.

Re: [arr] Rahman-Goutam Menon

2007-02-17 Thread logesh kum-arr

I wish Rahman can really uplift Gautam's film with soulful melodies or hip
hop beat or emotional BGM's
whatever it is I believe , Rahman justifies more than HJ , not that Hj is
bad ..
but with rahman the total outlook of the film would change ...
Look what has happened to
Dilse (Though was declared a flop movie (movie was actually good), the
musicals of the film are one of the best in Indian film industry, like wise
Taal Subhas Ghai has himself confessed ..that it is easy to make dance
numbers, but what matters is to portray emotion and melodies ..he said he
believed in his time only Rahman could justify his film,am very proud.)

If it is a great work it definitely needs Rahman ..otherwise settle for some
mediocre MD's ..

Boss said with time people raise Expectations over him ..and this is what he
works for to live up to the expectation.

2007-01-25 Thread logesh kum-arr

Hi ,

I believe the song once again he breaks the traditional way of composing
music ..
it is a great song ,
here we can see how the keys of piano get mixed in an unusual way(they come
and go in pieces though having no pattern) , but very very pleasing to hear
i have never heard such a composition till date.
I love each and every bit of the song ..and this song should deff be given
an excellence award.

What a composition it is the sign of creativity ...if you can relate to any
art
like paintings , sculptures or architecture this song can be said as the
creative
master piece in music.

Long Live ARR international music

etc.I usually keep on singing this song too.Its one of ARR's masterpiece.Im
just wondering y didnt the song get a national
award. No one can create such kind of quality music other than ARR.

Subject: [arr] One of the best songs of modern era - Pachai Nirame?

Pachai Nirame (not Hindi version) continues to reign top as one of my
all time favorites and I vote it to be one of the greatest songs in
India of the modern era. The instrumentation, singing, feel,
aesthetics, soundscapes, just PURE MAGIC. I just listened to it and
it coninues to play heavy on my song rotations now for many years. An
evergreen powerhouse. What say?

[arr] Rahman for social cause

2007-01-21 Thread logesh kum-arr

I believe Rahman is on a special reason on this planet ...
I just love his journey of life as he takes on .

Initially was praised for his rhythm based pop hits ...but as he himself
says
now he is known for the melodies ...I always listened to those hip hop and
so youthful numbers,
but now i know the strength lies in the soulful melodies .only those stay
for long term..and Rahman i believe has mastered that ...

He has always attracted fans for his great piece of music and obtained fame
in film industry
and now he is not only attracting only people who love music but also people
who would like to help others.
On their walk of life who would like to feel that they have atleast made a
few people happy before they kick the bucket ...

I would like to hear more non - film albums for soical cause , i think he
is on top of the world when he combines with Bala and Kanika for some great
reason. Please Rahman give us some non-film albums.

Pray for me brother is really great , the portion where he sings ye yi ye
yoo ye yi ye yoo ye yi yeee yi ye yi yoo is
soulful .

Rahman has always been associated with reasons like patriotism (Vande matram
the whole album)
social welfare , help the poor (Pray for me brother) , so now he more than
just a musician ..
not all people get this honor in this cruel world only love can cure all
hatred ..

I am a very proud fan rahman and this group , and will always support him
for all his dreams and vision..

Long live ARR , you make me happy

Kind Regards

The movie is a great inspiratonal,

The BGM is definitely good this is my view a true view

It is definitey worth my money and am going to watch it again ...

not because of Rahman or Manirathnam ..but because it is a great movie and
lot's there which i believe has gone unnoticed.

  hi folks,

am not willing to hurt any1 sentiments here! if ur a rahman fan its
not mandatory that u shud always forcefully say u like his music. The
music was absolutely stunning, i have listened to it atleast 500 times.
what am saying is, mani has made a mess out of it.! why was tera bina
not picturised fully/ why was mayya mayya not picturised properly, the
same goes with barso re and baazi laga just 3 lines in the film. jaage
hein always comes in background whenever abhishek is challeneged r he
addresses his employees.? ay hairathe for scenes for abhishek /aish.

there is no proper justification for abhishek's act? mani gives an
explanation linking with gandhiji which i was ROTFL and he explained
abt his past like working in shell and coming to india to set up factory.

he did not show the growth (made us luk like its a rajni movie where
he grows in 1 song), suddenly when he came to that point, he realised
he has just come to interval and did not know what to add on so he
brought in madhavan and vidya which was unnecessary.
he did not realise that smooching scenes doesn't get u fixed with the
movie rather averted bcoz the bonding between them was weak.

time and again he refused that its not biopic but if u luk @ it every
1 knows it. father is a teacher/worked in shell/polyester/paralytic
attack/case against him/twins. dont u see the connection.

rahman has given his gud shot in the songs but mani failed to capitalise.

u know how disappointed i was when krishna inserted songs in
SOk munbe vaa and New york back to back.

am equally with mani. change the format of making movie.

anyway, i put my money on shankar as he knows where to insert songs
and how to picturise it and how to keep audience engrossed. people in
the show were walking out for songs r keeping their hands on their heads.

this is public reaction !

anyway lets c how the movie fares, but i still persist with my earlier
mail and dont start telling me that go out of this community and
stuff, bcoz am a ardent rahman fan.

cheers

(deliberately?) fail
to see the bigger picture! Guru is not about Mallika's seductive

Ash's rain-soaked sari. This is an inspirational film about daring

and pushing the envelope. This is a film about hope. One of those ladies
from the Shakti Parivar tells Maddy that if there were 10 Gurus, there
wouldn't be poverty in India. Lets look at the bigger picture - the

reachability get in the way of its underlying message and intention.
If all

those unnecessary songs, well thenthe lesser said the better.

Well done Mani, Abhishek and AR :-) Its time once again to take a bow!!!

  hi,

this is my personal opinion abt guru. I watched it last sunday paying

I did not like the movie @ all. The things i hated in the movie are:

1.unnecessary episode of vidya balan/maddy, am sure mani wanted a
movie to run for 2.45 hrs, with the original script it was only for 2
hrs, then he thougth to include this.
  2. aish is not convincing in her role, look so thin and acting is
jaded.
  3. songs r unnecessary and placed badly in the movies. mayya (2 stanza
was cut r probably pushed to background) is not necessary, immediately
followd by barso re (again 2nd stanza pushed to background - except
for few lines). ay hairathe does come in bits and pieces, tera bina is
not fully picturised and fails to create a impact on screen as it was
on trailers and audio's. yammo yammo was okey and baazi laga - highly
  unnecessary.
  4. rajiv menons work was alrite and nothing that gr8.
  5. rahman's bgm was okey, he used a lot of songs pieces in the bgm as
they were not used by mani properly.
  6. so many scenes in rain, barso re, whenver abhishek addresses his
staff, prathap pothan episode. why does mani waste so much water when
there is so much scarcity in chennai. the point is rain is not reqd.
agreed in 1st song of mouna ragam but why repetedly here?
  7. moves @ a liesurely pace and doesn't pick up anytime
  8. abhishek does all his acts and justifies in 4.5 min saying .5 min
is profit, naah it did not work. where did gandhi come in? who asked
abt his past to the panel that 2 shirts/15000 rupees stuff? they were
  asking reasons

[arr] GURU First bloom

2007-01-12 Thread logesh kum-arr

Hi Amigos ,

I had been waiting for this day for long time ...Had booked the tickets ,
checking every day when the window will be open for online booking in
sathyam ..finally i got the tickets ...
Well Guru had created so much hype ...

Maniratnam
Rajeev menon (after bombay , wonderful camera work)
Very own Rahman

well i jus wanted to be a film critic for this film ...to observe
as any normal crowd wud watch ..( I had to forget that this was one of Mani
Rahman combo)
had to clear my pre conceptions ...
As i went into the sathyam cinema settled down ..
then started the song straightly ...mayya mayya good picturization

then the crew names started to appear on the screen

Guru title comes ...
photography , direction lyrics ..
then Music ...Suddenly there was loud noises and whizzles, it was Rahman
who made the crowd to go wild.

The movie gets going with the tint of old films , or rather different look
which is really nice work by rajeevmenon
long time since we see some good camera work ..

beautiful locations ..man i wud watch the film again for the tint and old
mumbai locations ..

story is simple , though very powerful great message from
manirathnam..or may be same as Abdul kalam
go for ur dreams, or what ur heart says rather following the foot steps of
the normal crowd ...
I dont want to break the story line here , left for u guys to check it ,
dont read the reviews watch for ur self
u will feel better watching the movie , a motivational movie ..says when you
follow ur dreams ,
u wud face ups and downs in life but wait till the darkness pass ...there
you go , you will see your dream come true ...

BGM is great , i really like the bgms where gurukanth desai , gets up and
start waliking with confidence
now music is the part which conveys what he is up to a better life
waiting ...
music is apt ...dosent require those doom machale kinda songs ...need
decent music which can keep the movie alive
and bring the emotions, I believe rahman has done it aptly , i want to wait
to see other praise for the sound of music ...

once again a great movie from mani's team .
this is not a streotyped movie ... a film for guys who demand a movie of
great standards

Good work Mani , rahman, Rajeev ..team
I wud say my money was worth it .

Time will say it all

[arr] Rahman in Saarang 2007 ???

Pro Shows 2007 Global Rhythms

Global Rhythms has been in the news lately with several collaborative
exercises with AR Rahman, most recently at the Hollywood Bowl in July 2006.
Global Rhythms is a combination of traditional and non-traditional music
from all over the world. A concept conceived by Miami Alumnus Srinivas
Krishnan in close collaboration with Pamela Fox, Pat Hernly and Jason Koontz
in the year 1996, the project aims to integrate sounds from all over the
world and create music that utilizes an eclectic blend of Middle Eastern,
Caribbean, Indian, African, Brazilian, Latin, Australian, and Western
instrumentation and their team has been invited as a result to Cornell, MIT,
Harvard, Dartmouth, the Vatican, Hollywood Bowl to name a few. There are
over 140 members within Global Rhythms today and what makes them unique is
their ability to embrace every kind of music within their repertoire.

This ensemble has performed in concert with over 50 guest artists from all
over the world including Grammy winners Horacio Hernandez, Eguie Castrillo,
and Glen Velez, mridangam vidwan Sri Umayalpuram Sivaraman from India, and
over a year ago, they combined with Ghatam Karthick, Embar Kannan, Poongulam
Subramaniam and Mandolin U.P. Raju (part of Heartbeat Ensemble).

Global Rhythms benefits from the experiences of music professors Ethan
Sperry and Roger Davis, its co-directors. Davis' experiences lie in the bass
guitar and musical arrangements while Sperry specializes in vocals. The
talent these instructors possess echoes in the unique and beautiful sound
Global Rhythms plays for its audiences. But what makes Global Rhythms so
unique is that they can give a whole one hour show focusing entirely on
percussion or an hour show focusing on voice (they have a 100 piece choir).

Earlier in August 2006, the US Consulate had honored AR Rahman and Srinivas
Krishnan for their collaborative work through Global Rhythms over four
years. Rahman's contribution is significant because it has allowed for the
members of Global Rhythms to adventure and explore every kind of music and
each show with Rahman has opened new doors for over 350 members of Global
Rhythms over the four years. On January 25, 2007, IIT MADRAS will feature
Global Rhythms that will feature a total of 18 artists who will present a
whole range of music, catering to the needs of an Indian Audience. The
concert will highlight percussion instruments and will aim at sowing a new
seed of world music in Chennai. Five of the band members including Patrick
Hernly, Jeff Queen, TJ Hartman and James Sparling were recently featured
live in concert with AR Rahman and Sivamani in Mumbai over New Years Eve and
their skills in a range of percussion traditions will certainly make for an
attractive concert more so because they are now combining with some of the
best artists from India that evening including Ghatam Karthick's team. The
oboe, saxophone and the flute that are woodwind instruments will also be
integral to the show and feature Carrie Hernly, Leigh Ann Woodard and Seetha
Shivaswamy. Cleve Johnson who is a scholar in Carnatic Music will also be
part of this team on the keyboard and a dance trio team of Suzanne Maier,
Melissa Jungles and Tami Robinson will be part of a class act that will end
the show that evening with music of Chennai's very own AR Rahman.

   Dear friends,

When we set out to raise funds for the A.R.Rahman Foundation as a gift
 for ARR's birthday, I
had only planned to send him an image of the cheque by email and the
 physical cheque only by
courier. But when the contributions soared past anything I had hoped
for, I felt it was only
fair that it be handed over in person. And so, I set out to Chennai on
 Saturday morning not
knowing if I would actually be able to meet him. Though by now, we have
 seen enough evidence of
his simplicity I imagined being stopped by security guards even before I
 could let him know,
all of which was completely unwarranted.

Thanks to the never-say-no graciousness of ARR and Vijay's entreaties, I
 had the good fortune
of being your representative at the birthday celebrations of the person
 whom many of us deify.
Far from being met with for a few seconds and summarily dismissed, I was
 treated with the same
affection, care and love by everyone at his home and studio as were many
 of the key
personalities of the industry who made their way to his abode to greet
 him in person.

I made my way to his home with some navigational aid from Vijay to only
 find a bunch of busy
workers setting up the place in preparation for lunch. When I said that
I had to meet ARR Sir,
I was asked to wait in the first floor of the studio which is the
 building right in front of
his home. I made my way there to find many people doing the same, some
 of them being Mr.
Srinivasa Krishnan of Global Rhythms, Sridhar Subramaniam of Sony BMG,
 Naresh Iyer, executives
from WorldSpace and Saregama and producers from the Tamil industry whom
 I did not recognize. I
could see gifts of flowers from a host of people from the industry -
 Subhash Ghai, Udit and
Deepa Narayan, Rajkumar Santoshi, Bharat and Kanika, Chinmayee, Radio
 Mirchi, Radio City were
some names that I managed to spot amidst the sea of bouquets in the
 studio. ARR's right hand
men Noell James, Sivakumar, Swamidorai, Faiz and H. Sridhar were also in
 attendance.

We were soon joined by ARR's mother, daughters, son, wife and sisters
 and others in the family.
I soon realized that simplicity and humility runs through every brick
and body in his home and
studio. ARR still hadn't turned up and his mother insisted that we must
 have lunch and we were
ushered back into his home where ARR joined us. Soon director Shankar
 and family, Kathir,
Krishna (of SOK), Praveenkanth made their way in. After lunch we made
 our back to the studio,
were ARR took us to a large studio room on the 2nd floor and screened
the video of Pray For Me
Brother. I am still searching for words to describe the multiple
 exhilarating emotions that
passed through me as I watched the video. Nothing we have heard so far
 in the live performances
truly captures the brilliance of the recorded song. Who else, but ARR,
 could have an Indian
classical harmony accompanying a rap segment?

Following this, both ARR and his son Ameen, who also celebrates his
 birthday on the same day,
cut the cake jointly. While his son wanted to cut his special
 'Spiderman' shaped cake, ARR
decided his simpler cake was more appropriate :-)

Coming to the crux of my visit, it was the time after the birthday cake
 was distributed and
everyone was leisurely seated around the studio that I chose to hand the
 cheque over to ARR. I
wish I could say, 'Did we spring a surprise on ARR or what!' But ARR
 instead sprang a surprise
on me! He looked visibly moved and said 'I have been telling these folks
 what you guys have
been doing.' I went, Huh? And his response was, 'I was on the group
 last night and saw all
these messages about a collection drive. You guys are increasing my
 responsibilities now'. I
quickly assured him that he could count on our support in anything that
 he wanted to do. he

I have heard this piece , in an song by Safri duo (Drummers)

The CD cover credits Ranjit Barot for additional programming for the track
in question. So it might be Ranjit, or even Rahman himself or probably a
loop. After all the flute piece runs just for a fleeting few seconds ,have
we not heard instruments playing in the similar pattern in many songs
composed by different composers ... more of using the instruments in the
same way, how many hollywood movies we have seen having violin movements in
 the same pattern.

am too confused , a 5.1 sound needs 32 bits for sound (available only in
dvd format) ...
while Mp3 maintains 16 bits for sound ...
can somebody explain how this can be true ...

Kind regards

Re: [arr] Re: Interview ARR not the superior

2006-11-26 Thread logesh kum-arr
Ofcourse All music composers are same before the art of music ..
But the truth will never die out ..true music stands out ..
and I believe that we arr fans are not narrow minded to only appreciate
the music created in the realm of Rahman taste ..
we do appreciate other music if it is good ..many such occations ..not
just one ..
I listen to western music ..and indian pop music ..
and I believe you cannot compare people of diffrent genres ..
I like Eminem ..Darren Hayes DiDo ..Mettalica ...and many more ..all are good
in their own Genre ..
and I am really a proud fan of Rahman ..that I some times get Goose
bumps hearing his music .even now if i listen to some tracks of
Vandamatram i get carried away words cant explain them ..
so if anyone is true genious it will really show ..and Arr has always
proved it many times ..

his music stands out ...
And in recent times i have seen him not jus confined to one style
...he has expanded his creativity to other styles too

Long live ARR and the world music ...

vocal fame jiya jale, Dilse) pointed out like this .I
translate the malayam extract and it goes as follows.

  Question from the Interviewer .

Now a days music is branded ARR is the most sought
after brand in the country, how do you comment on
this, running behind one single person is this the
fall of our great musical Heritage?

  Ans: M.G Radha Krishnan (composer)

I know dileep (ARR) when was 5years of old, he is a
great and talented composer now. If his music is the
most sought after brand in the country, it#8217;s
purely b#8217;coz of his talent and there are people
to buy and listen his score blind fold. I am afraid
how far it will go. But this is not the fall of our
musical heritage, In front of MUSIC, ARR, Ilayaraja
my self who is at lowest cadre are EQUAL.

How far friends you agree to this #8220;all composers
  are equal in front of MUSIC#8221;

Assumptions are the mother of all mistakes

Hey Dude ..CAn you wait till the music is heard ..

I dont believe it is some thing like you hear and give out ur opinions ...
you got to get into the ryhthms ...

Any way what you feel is just your opinion ...

Whatever it is we have to accept ...

And I believe the GURU of Music is going to smash all the harsh mouthings ...

Wait and observe ..

All the best
