CMDB Reconciliation Relationships

2007-01-19 Thread David Reilly
Hi listers!

I am currently doing a lot of reconcilition work with datasets in CMDB 1.1
and have found that relationships between ci's in datasets are not moved
automatically to the golden dataset (BMC.ASSET) when ci's are reconciled.
Has anyone any experience of recreating these relationships, I know I could
build workflow that runs on an escalation scheduled after the reconcilition
job completes to create these relationships but if anyone has done this
before or has a better way of doing it, please let me know!

Thanks in advance for your help!

2007-01-19 Thread David Reilly
Hi Listers!

We are looking at using some ci data dicovered by nLayers Insight 3.5.1 to
populate a dataset within the CMDB 1.1, it is also packaged with Managed
Objects as BTI 3.5. Has anyone created this integration, if so how did you
go about it, don't want to reinvent the wheel if someone has done it before!

Any information would be appreciated.

ITSM7 inbound email processing

2007-01-19 Thread Tony Worthington
Hey everybody...

Was there ever any functionality that existed in ITSP which handled
inbound email? Has anyone gone down this road yet and found anything that
exists in the workflow that's not enabled or would help simplify the
process?

I understand how to implement this on the AR side but am not yet familiar
enough with the inner-workings of ITSM7 to jump into workflow
additions/modifications.

Another Remedy product had this built in ... is it the CSS app? Can
anyone with knowlege of CSS share how its workflow handles inbound email?

Too bad there's not an add-on like the IM tasking module... (I can dream,
can't I?)

Thanks, and Happy Friday!

Hi everyone,

I have a form with a single entry. I added a field to the
form, and changed a little bit of workflow. Suddenly the form
started hanging whenever I tried to display that single entry.
It displays fine in Search mode, but as soon as I try to do
the search it hangs. It also hangs if I try to open the entry
via workflow.

I removed the field and put the workflow back the way it was
but it doesn’t help. I disabled all filters and active links
that fire on display, so now the logs show nothing, but it
still hangs. The api log shows the call to open the form, and
so does the sql log, but neither show anything wrong.

Any idea of what to look for? (I'll appreciate anyone's help.
I need to write a report based on info that the form gathers.)

Hi George,

In general, AR System does use the OS or Java Run Time engine for DST.
However, there is a library that is used in the Mid-Tier that does its
own DST calculations. This library had to be patched.

Overall BMC DST information can be found at:

Hi all,

I'm coming in fairly new to this discussion on patches due to daylight
savings and am a bit confused about the whole thing.

My understanding always was that the ARServer does not keep its own
registry of daylight savings switch dates. I thought this was registry
was inherenet in the O/S or Java Run time engine?

Is there anything that gives more detail as to what (and how) is
affected?

Thanks.

In general, AR System does use the OS or Java Run Time engine for DST.
However, there is a library that is used in the Mid-Tier that does its own DST
calculations.  This library had to be patched.

Overall BMC DST information can be found at:
http://www.bmc.com/supportu/DST2007
Technical Bulletin can be found at:

Hi all,

I'm coming in fairly new to this discussion on patches due to daylight savings
and am a bit confused about the whole thing.

My understanding always was that the ARServer does not keep its own registry of
daylight savings switch dates.  I thought this was registry was inherenet in
the O/S or Java Run  time engine?

Is there anything that gives more detail as to what (and how) is affected?

Thanks.

George.

I'm pretty sure that when Mid-Tier 7.0.0 was listed there was a Yes

With that said, does this mean we can't stay on Mid-Tier 7.0.0 with some
DST patch?

Thank you so much for updating us, David.  We really appreciate it.

We all know that the compatibility matrix allows the 7.0.x Mid-Tier to
point to an ARS 6.3 server.

But, do you know if the DST patches were tested in mixed environments as
well?

In particular Mid-Tier 7.0.01 Patch 1(DST) against ARS 6.3 Patch 20(DST)
and Flashboards 6.3 patch 20?
There always seems to be some slight incompatibility issues, especially
when it comes to Flashboard 6.3 qualifications and Mid-Tier 7.x.x

Thanks,
Michelle

EIE with either SQL Server or Oracle Link will give you the ability to
build your own integration. Since you said Asset 6 you may need to go to
CMDB 20 to use the latest version that works with CMDB.

Web Apps on MidTier. How is it rendered?

2007-01-19 Thread Mikhail Serate
Hello List,
I would really like to know how the web applications on MidTier is being
rendered? Is it using Javascript? Reason I'm asking is that I'm trying to do
some load/performance testing on the applications on midtier using open
source testing tools. However I think the web apps on midtier is a special
case. Any other regular form can be perfomance-tested very easily.
If anyone can point me to any resource out there, or better yet, an open
source testing tool that is compatible with remedy, please let me know..

Re: Mid-tier prefetch scripts

2007-01-19 Thread strauss
My response times were measured on both the production server set that I
just built out, and development set which is identical except for
mid-tier:

Web - Win2K3 R2 Enterprise x64 on HP DL380 G5 with two 4-core Xeons and
12 gb RAM
Mid-tier 7.0.01 on Tomcat app server AND Tomcat web, JDK 1.4.2_13 -
Tomcat has memory pool from 512 to 1536 defined
The development mid-tier is identical except that the server is
Win2K3 Ent x86 on a DL-380 with two 3.4 ghz Xeons and 6 gb RAM

ARS - Win2K3 Enterprise x64 on HP DL385 with two 2-core Opterons and 10
gb RAM
DB - Win2K3 Enterprise x64 and SQL Server 2005 x64 on HP DL385 with two
2-core Opterons and 10 gb RAM (SQL Server grabs 8 gb RAM)
Client - WinXP Pro and IE 7 on 3ghz PC with 1 gb RAM

The long lag times to load non-prefetched forms (1:30 for Change
console, 1:40 for New Incident opened from Overview console) tells me
that basic mid-tier 7 architecture still leaves a lot to be desired.
Almost all of the sustained CPU load when pre-fetching objects and
loading a form for the first time is on the AR server, which sits at
30-35% total CPU for up to 1 to 1.5 minutes in the worst cases; one CPU
will stay at 75%, one at 50%, one at 25%. The CPU traces on the mid-tier
servers peak at 20% intermittently on several processors - usually 2 of
them. There is usually a single grab from the db server - one spike on
one CPU, or no trace at all in some cases!

Less than happy??? Any time you perform an operation for the first time,
like search for a customer from a new ticket, you will wish you were
back on ITSM 5.5 and mid-tier 5.1.2 when it comes to performance. It is
not a user experience that I want my IT staff to have to live with - who
do you know that will consider it acceptable to click on a link to open
a console or form and then stare at a blank, white screen for 1 and a
half minutes? Nobody here! All response times _after_ forms have loaded
once, either prefetched or not, were very fast - in the 1 to 2 seconds
range. It's that first impression that is going to be a killer. It
even occurs on little dialog boxes, like the selection box to Create a
request from the Overview console, or search for a customer. Each new
form or dialog that you invoke for the first time has a long, pregnant
pause before it displays - especially if it was not included in a
prefetch.

And compared to versions 5/6 it flies.

Re: Form hangs on display

2007-01-19 Thread Dwayne Martin
Thanks, Mike. I did try that, but it didn't help.

Since sending my email I found that the problem affects all
users, not just me.

Also I copied the form to a new form called GN:DeleteMe, and
that form does the same thing. You can display it in search
mode, and submit a new entry, but as soon as you try to
display an existing entry it hangs.

If you try to access the record from the web (Mid-Tier), the
pages on the page field are all overlapped, and the only
fields that display are those common to all pages. A message
says, “Error while parsing the qualifier (Error Code 5): Error
position: 13 (Arerror 1).” The browser hangs and you have
to use the task manager to kill it. This happens with both
Mozilla and IE.

Another wierd thing. I exported the form definition and
imported it into our test environment and it displays OK. So
I deleted the form from our live system and reimported it, but
it still doesn't display in our live system. I don't know of
any difference between the two systems, but there must be one
somewhere.

Thanks again,
Dwayne

Re: Mid-tier prefetch scripts

2007-01-19 Thread Tony Worthington
I don't disagree that the initial rendering is quite slow. And it sucks
that the only solution is to either prefetch via a perl/whatever script,
or use the xml midtier method.

My point was more towards post-initial-form/view-load (cached)
performance...

Now if there was a script that dumped every web viewable form into that
prefetch xml script... (we reboot weekly)

 :-)

Re: Mid-tier prefetch scripts

Each new
form or dialog that you invoke for the first time has a long, pregnant
pause before it displays - especially if it was not included in a
prefetch.

I second the Tomcat performance vote. It's noticably faster (even using
Apache and mod_jk) than IIS/SE(AS) even without using precache/fetch.
And compared to versions 5/6 it flies.

Chris - you don't mention what environment you're operating in?

Our web boxes are Win2k3 2x3.8GHz dual core xeon with 3GB of ram.

I'm also currently in a ITSP enviroment going to ITSM 7. Neither ITSP or

ITSM7 inbound email processing

Another funny thing is that our servers are rebooted every sunday morning,

Re: Flashboard Drill Down Stopped Working

2007-01-19 Thread Lucero, Michelle - IST contractor
Hey, Brian and other Flashboarders:

LOL...when I first read this. And then this sad thought came over me.
He might be serious. Agreed, it is one of the buggiest apps Remedy has
released. For grins, I tested the Remedy User 6.3 Patch 20 to see if
the drill down issue would be fixed. I think you already know the
answer.

My perception of the way Flashboards is treated within BMC Remedy is
like something to be ignored; kind of like a third leg. Sure we know
its there, but do we have to bring attention to it?

Support and bug fixes are lacking. It simply doesn't seem that
Flashboards has the proper backing, engineering or technical support
(Russell and Carrie are exceptions).

Maybe there's hope. I wonder if the Flashboard.exe in the 6.3 DST patch
has some fixes. Right now, we won't know until we install it. It's the
only application on the 6.3 Patch 20 FTP site without a readme file.

Hey, Brian:

Its always nice to hear from a fellow Flashboarder.
When you mention patch, was it for ARS Server, Mid-Tier or User Tool?

Most of our users are on the Mid-Tier, so will not experience the issue.
We have just a handful of users that are on the User Tool. Tech Support
is researching. In the interim, we're going to upgrade them to the
7.0.x User Tool where the problem doesn't seem to occur.

We did have a release recently, where we imported a few forms and
workflow. However, there were no FB changes nor any workflow that
affected FBs at all. And also, this issue occurs on every FB on every
form. Just to be on the safe side we re-flushed cache, the other night.
Still no change.

The strangest parts for us is:
The same FB's are not affected in Dev when viewed through the 6.3 User
Tool.
The same FB's work in Prod when viewed through a 7.0.x User Tool.

Thank you for responding,

Hi, Friends:

We also have a flaky issue with the URL string on any and all
Flashboards in production. It just started happening a few days ago.

In our case, the Flashboards DO display. However, the drill down no
longer works in the User Tool.
Strangely enough, this issue does not occur in the dev environment,
using the same User Tool. The Dev and production environments are all
on the same version and patch level of everything.

When drilling down on ANY Flashboard on ANY form in the Remedy 6.3 User
Tool (any patch), a separate browser window opens (yes a browser - that
should not happen in the User Tool). The URL string is missing the
/arsys. A page cannot be displayed message occurs.

I've reported this issue a few months ago. And it mysteriously went
away. Now its back. This on again/off again flakiness has occurred
since moving to a 7.0.x Mid-Tier. The issue has been reopened.

The Default Web Path in the Admin Tool has not changed in about a year
(and neither has the mid-tier hostname). We use an alias. We've
already tested hard coding the actual DNS name. No change.

By the way, it appears to be a non-issue when using a 7.0.x User Tool.

For grins we've tested different Mid-Tier versions to no avail.

we have.

Could anyone provide a good way to come up to speed quickly.

Thanks for the help I think I am going to need all I can get.

PS. I don't even have the client yet. Only the web front end. I think
we are on version 6 but I don't know what our patch level is.

Is there a Remedy Admin guide for dummies?

Re: Form hangs on display

2007-01-19 Thread Opela, Gary L Contr OC-ALC/ITMA
Dwayne, you are not doing any remote database calls to your test server on
window display/open/loaded are you?

Just a thought, if your test box was trusted with the database and your
production box was not, and you tried to pull data, I would expect you to
get an error, but it sounds like something with a database connection
somewhere has you all horked up.

A message
says, Error while parsing the qualifier (Error Code 5): Error
position: 13 (Arerror 1). The browser hangs and you have
to use the task manager to kill it. This happens with both
Mozilla and IE.

Another wierd thing. I exported the form definition and
imported it into our test environment and it displays OK. So
I deleted the form from our live system and reimported it, but
it still doesn't display in our live system. I don't know of
any difference between the two systems, but there must be one
somewhere.

Thanks again,
Dwayne

Hi everyone,

I have a form with a single entry. I added a field to the
form, and changed a little bit of workflow. Suddenly the form
started hanging whenever I tried to display that single entry.
It displays fine in Search mode, but as soon as I try to do
the search it hangs. It also hangs if I try to open the entry
via workflow.

I removed the field and put the workflow back the way it was
but it doesn't help.

Re: Trace a user to an IP address?

Jim,

Using the logs is not the only way to capture this type of information. It
is also possible to capture the Workstation and USERID using Remedy workflow
at the time of login. I have implemented this in past engagements but have
not attempted to do the same for IP. You should however be able to
determine the IP if you have the Workstation name.

I am assuming that your role is more management than technical when it comes
to Remedy. Have you discussed this with your Remedy Development team? I am
sure they will be able to explore this and other potential solutions. Cheers,

Group Permissions to Deployable Application Objects

2007-01-19 Thread L. J. Head
Ok...here is my understanding...please feel free to correct if I am mistaken
at any point during this

Create Deployable Application 'A'
Create Form 'F'
Make Form F part of Deployable Application A
Create Group 'G'
Create Role 'R'
Map Roll R to Group G

Now...when I'm in Form F I can grant permissions to the Role I created...but
not the Group
If in the application and I go to groups/roles I can manage any dynamic
group...and all of my roles...but not my regular groups (as it should be)
If I am simply connected to the server however...and I go into Groups from
there...I noticed something weird, I have the ability to grant my Group form
and field permissions. Now...I get an error stating that group permissions
have been removed because the object is in a deployable appbut the field
stays on the right side of the columneven if I leave and come back

Now to the question. Does that group have access? If I were to re-map my
role to another group...would members of group G still have
access?...according to the groups dialog it does...but even after I grant
that...I can't see it by going into the form and looking at those fields...

If my group doesn't have access...why does it's permissions still get saved
with the object?
Why do objects that are in deployable applications still show up for me to
assign group permissions to?

Best Practice

When working with Deployable Applications, you should always assign
permissions based on ROLE, not group name, independent on how you have
mapped groups to roles in the ROLE form.

Hope that helps..

Listers,

Just a note for anyone that is utilizing a Server Group. I have been advised
not to install patch 1 for 7.0.1. I did upgrade to 7.0.1, but there is a bug
where the server does not recognize floating licenss issued for a server
group. This is fixed in patch 1, but I was informed that it introduces
another bug where the server does not release the licenses from the user,
after logout or after specified time. So I cannot apply patch 1.

David,
Is there going to be a patch 2 coming that does not contain these issues.?

I'm coming in fairly new to this discussion on patches due to daylight

My understanding always was that the ARServer does not keep its own registry

Is there anything that gives more detail as to what (and how) is affected?

Re: Group Permissions to Deployable Application Objects

2007-01-19 Thread Mahan, Janet L [EQ]
I have a similar problem that I can't figure out what happened. We are on a
unix server 6.0.3 patch 1351 on top of sybase 12.5.1. I was copying forms and
workflow from development to production (both at same versions) and I wanted
the forms to now be part of a deployable application. (I didn't export the
application because I am having problems of the export hanging the server). So
to be safe I thought I would move everything over and then convert it to
deployable.

I created my roles and mapped my groups. Then I went into the admin client and
set the default permissions for the application. I tried adding them using the
Groups/Roles but noticed that on the fields it didn't give me the option of
making them r/w. So I went into each form and changed permissions on the forms
and fields.

When the users tried to access it via the mid-tier they got an error message

Apparently the permissions didn't 'stay', so I went back and changed them
again. The users still could not get in. I changed the alias name, made that
home page the server default, still strange. Sometimes if I changed the
preference a user could get in, others could not. Finally I went thru and
modified everyone's user record and preference and they can get in. What did I
do wrong?

SOLVED** SLA Due Date question.

2007-01-19 Thread Dan Caissie
Well this has been solved with help from Doug Tanner.

Now Doug had some much better ideas and ways to do this but he has way
better ideas that I have talent :-)

Added a field to the HelpDesk form called sla update and add this to the
SLA_HelpDesk view form from Help Desk.

Run all Escalations and filter agents the SLA_HelpDesk form

2 Escalations are needed.

1. SLA:SLADueDateupdate01 RUN IF: 'Status' = Pending IF
ACTION: SET FIELDS: sla update: Value= update

2. SLA:SLADueDateupdate02 RUNIF: ( 'Status' = Pending) AND
( 'sla update' = done ) IF ACTION: SET FIELDS: sla update: Value=
done now

2 Filters That run on Modify

1. SLA:SLADueDateupdate01'! RUN IF: 'sla update' = update

IF ACTION:

SET FIELDS: sla update: Value= Done

Push Fields: Push Value to: SLA:Measurement Push
Field if: ( 'SLA_InstanceID' = $SLA_InstanceID$) AND (
'Application_InstanceID' = $instanceId$) AND ( 'MeasurementStatus' =
Pending)

Take no action

Modify All Matching Request

FIELDS: MeasurementStatus = In
Process ChildDnStopTime= $TIMESTAMP$

Goto : 1000

2. SLA:SLADueDateupdate02'! RUN IF: 'sla update' = done
now

IF ACTION:

SET FIELDS: sla update: Value= Done now old

Push Fields: Push Value to: SLA:Measurement Push
Field if: ( 'SLA_InstanceID' = $SLA_InstanceID$) AND (
'Application_InstanceID' = $instanceId$) AND ( 'MeasurementStatus' = In
Process)

Take no action

Modify All Matching Request

FIELDS: MeasurementStatus = Pending
ChildDnStartTime= $TIMESTAMP$

Goto : 1000

I have this running at 3:45AM for the 1st Escalation and 3:50AM for the
second one.

I hope this makes sense to everyone and have a great weekend and Thanks
for the help!

The question I have is in a Ticket we show the SLA Due Date and other
things run off this date and the problem is when the Ticket is put into
a pending state the time will stop and the Due Date will not update.

What I am trying to do is to have the Due Date update while it's in
pending so the time will be updated to reflect the pending state.

So if a SLA is Due Date is 12/28/2006 9am and the ticket is put into
pending for 3 hours I'm trying to have it update say every hour so it
would keep pushing out the due date while it's in pending.

I was thinking of an Escalation that would update the SLA Measurement
form by looking for any record showing a pending state ( I would a new
field to show this was run on this record) and change it to Work In
Progress and that change it right back and clear the other field.

But I don't think this will update the ticket just the due date in this
form.

But even if I did this a 3am each day and it worked it would be better
that the due date being static for 3 weeks or so.

Hopefully to answer your questions

Best Practice

When working with Deployable Applications, you should always assign
permissions based on ROLE, not group name, independent on how you have
mapped groups to roles in the ROLE form.

Hope that helps..

Ok...here is my understanding...please feel free to correct if I am mistaken
at any point during this

Create Deployable Application 'A'
Create Form 'F'
Make Form F part of Deployable Application A Create Group 'G'
Create Role 'R'
Map Roll R to Group G

Now...when I'm in Form F I can grant permissions to the Role I created...but
not the Group If in the application and I go to groups/roles I can manage
any dynamic group...and all of my roles...but not my regular groups (as it
should be) If I am simply connected to the server however...and I go into
Groups from there...I noticed something weird, I have the ability to grant
my Group form and field permissions. Now...I get an error stating that
group permissions have been removed because the object is in a deployable
appbut the field stays on the right side of the columneven if I
leave and come back

Now to the question. Does that group have access? If I were to re-map my
role to another group...would members of group G still have
access?...according to the groups dialog it does...but even after I grant
that...I can't see it by going into the form and looking at those fields...

If my group doesn't have access...why does it's permissions still get saved
with the object?
Why do objects that are in deployable applications still show up for me to
assign group permissions to?

2007-01-19 Thread L. J. Head
I agree with (a)it should definitely NOT be allowed...even if it is
ignored by the server
For the (b) I just took one of the forms in question...verified that the
group had permissions...exported to def and checked the def...all group
permissions were stripped on the export...and a re-import verified that they
were removedso at least there is that sanity check on their part

How To Mirror Attachment Pool from HPD:Help Desk to CHG:TSK

2007-01-19 Thread Jase Brandon
Hello Listers,
Help Desk 6.0 Patch 15
SQL Server 2000

I am trying to figure out a way to mirror the attachment tab on HPD:Help
Desk Form to the CHG:TSK Form.
Desired Result is that if an attachment exists on HPD:HelpDesk, whenever
a task is created from the Create Task button and an attachment
exists, or when an attachment is added to the case,
then add the attachment to the task on CHG:TSK.
I copied the attachment pool field from HPD:Help Desk to CHG:Task. Then
created a filter on HPD:HelpDesk to do a push fields to CHG:TSK on
modify (when the attachment is added).
I can't get it to work so far. I am currently running through logs
trying to discern what is going wrong. I am wondering is it has
something to do with my execution order or if attachment pool fields
behave differently.
I don't have much experience dealing with attachment pool fields other
than just plopping one on a form.
Has anyone else had a similiar experience?

Thanks in advance for your ideas,

Jase Brandon

Re: UPDATE: Daylight saving time Technical Bulletin for AR System 6.0.1, 6.03 and 7.0.01

2007-01-19 Thread Easter, David
As with all patches, it is recommended that both the server and Mid-Tier
are patched to the same level. However, were you to choose not to do
that, what I can say is that the patched library exists in the Mid-Tier
portion of the patch. As with all situations, you should try it in your
lab to determine if there are any negative effects in your environment
based on your decisions. Please read the readme files for each portion
of the patch for details on which fixes are within which portions of the
patch.

David,

Based on what you mentioned below, does this mean that if you are on ARS
6.3 and Mid Tier 6.3 that you need to only ensure that Mid Tier is
patched to Patch 20?
Would there be any issues if AR Server remains at patch 16 with this DST
issue?

Is there anything that gives more detail as to what (and how) is
affected?

Thanks.

George.

Thank you so much for updating us, David. We really appreciate
it.

We all know that the compatibility matrix allows the 7.0.x
Mid-Tier to
point to an ARS 6.3 server.

But, do you know if the DST patches were tested in mixed
environments as
well?

In particular Mid-Tier 7.0.01 Patch 1(DST) against ARS 6.3 Patch
20(DST)
and Flashboards 6.3 patch 20?
There always seems to be some slight incompatibility issues,
especially
when it comes to Flashboard 6.3 qualifications and Mid-Tier
7.x.x

Thanks,

Re: Remedy Vulnerability

2007-01-19 Thread Shellman, David
I agree. Mileage may very but in our system weeding through the number of
records that are simply noted as password resets, password unlock, printer
reset, server down, router down, etc for those one or two gems hardly seems
worth the effort.

Our data is treated as public data and is available for our internal customer
to view. It is also transmitted to the customer on ticket resolution. Storing
system critical data in records that are essentially available to anyone in the
company is a no no. The real company secrets are stored in other systems and
databases.

Not to say that security should be completely over looked. It varies based on
the sensitivity of the data stored.

Re: How To Mirror Attachment Pool from HPD:Help Desk to CHG:TSK

2007-01-19 Thread Jason Miller

Hi Jase,

One thing that I found useful when I needed the same attachment in multiple
places was to create a shared attachment form. Then use a table field to
display the attachments on whatever forms the file needs to displayed on (it
is also nice because you can see who added/last modified the attachment(s)
and when in the table field and can have potentially unlimited attachments
per ticket). This way you do not have to create workflow to keep multiple
attachments synchronized and you don't waste database space with duplicate
files. You will have to also create a dialog box to attach / modify / delete
the files in place of right clicking on the attachment field but I find that
it gives a bit more control. This workflow is portable so you can keep
adding it to other forms where you need it, just copy the table and buttons
and update the active links.

Let me know if you want, I could search my archives for a def.

Jason
