Import of People data into ITSM 7

2007-07-31 Thread Srikanth
Hi All listers,

I have a question on the import of the people data into Remedy for
ITSM 7.
I am pretty new to the ITSM world, So bear with me if I am asking a
very silly question.

While it is clear that we need inport the base people data into People
form, I am not very clear with
all the other forms that we need to load the data with people data. In
our current system we do a load into SHR:People form. Are there any
such forms in ITSM 7 too?

We are doing a fressh implemetation of ITSM 7.

Please let me know if you need any additional information.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,
Srikanth

Re: Need someone to proof read

2007-07-31 Thread John Sundberg
I don't really think it makes sense to ever have a list of 32000 al.

I am sure the query could be improved -- however a different approach would
probably be the better route.

Meaning - I think some sort of namespace strategy should exist.

Solution: you would walk a tree to get what you need.

The root of the tree - would be server
the first set of branches would be the list of forms on the server

then under each form a list of:
- filters, al, menus, etc...

then under filters (the operations)
-save, update, delete, merge, ...

then under an operation (save)
a list of filters by execution order, or criteria or by name or ???

(I know there is shared workflow -- and a strategy can be created to deal
with that)

But - excluding wanting to know "how many als exist on my server" - I can
think of no reason to have a big list.
(Another benefit of the tree approach above is a better naming result.)
You can create a filter/al called 'require_first_name' which would be on
your Person form.
which is a better name than
'KDI_Person_save_or_modify_or_merge_require_first_name' (in my opinion)

(The current admin strategy requires a solid naming strategy -- which I call
"Grand Planning" -- and I think it is a bad strategy to require people "know
a ton about the system" before they move forward) As - if you were a
"beginner" -- you would need to develop for a year or two before you would
see the benefits of a name strategy - therefore you won't do a strategy
until it is too late) BLAH BLAH BLAH

Another side benefit to the above tree approach is debugging. Generally when
debugging I know the "action" that I want to follow (Like - saving the User
form). So - I would like to click on User - click on filter - click on save
- and get a list of the filters that may be related. (I am now looking at a
manageable piece of the haystack) (And to continue my dream: -- then I would
"right-click" the save on User form (in the tree) and say log activity
criteria:$USER$ = "John Sundberg"... And then I would get a nice little
filter log for save actions only on the User form for the user "John
Sundberg". NICE NICE NICE - saves time - solves problems...

To recap - changing the admin tool tree display can have significant
positive results.
-faster admin interaction to server
-quicker to debugging problems
-less rope to hang yourself

Re: 20% Shrinkage in Field Widths Using AR User Tool for 7.0.1

2007-07-31 Thread Susan Palmer
We've only used the 701P3 user tool.

We have many other date fields on many forms so that is not the common
factor. The other core fields did not change length.

I'm assuming you've tried making a new form to see if it does the same
thing. Have you 'saved' your existing forms at all since the upgrade?

Let us know when you figure it out. Good luck!

2007-07-31 Thread CLG-29
Susan,

We've had Arial defaults for years -- even back when we upgraded to 4.5.2
(in 2001) and 5.1.2 (in 2003) so it makes no sense to me that this should be
causing problems like this now. BTW -- we are seeing this behavior with
7.0.1 P3 user tool.

So -- did the problem with your 2 fields occur with 7.0.1 P2 or just the P3
user tool???

Re: ITSM 7.0 bug.

2007-07-31 Thread strauss
Even more interesting, when the CTM:People Permission Groups form is opened in
Dialog View-Access, selecting a row in the Access Restrictions tablefield fires
an active link that tries to copy the contents of that 128 character field back
into z1D Description above it, which is 69 characters long. Talk about
successive truncation...

Hi Betsy,

We recently upgraded the server from 5.1.2 to 7.0.1P2 and are going through
the user tool upgrades to 701P3. The only fields I've seen a problem with
are the Submitted (or Create) and Modified date fields. It's not that great
of movement, goes to the left about 3/8". I never changed from the default
Sans Serif fonts because in the past there were sometimes issues. I thought
it was odd that it was just those two fields, but grateful.

As a followup to this, I know that there may be some privacy concerns
since Bugzilla prints your email address on things you touch. If
there is anyone out there avoiding using the interface for this
reason, I can create an email alias @arswiki.org that forwards email
to your actual email address. Just let me know through personal email
if you are interested and/or are avoiding the interface for this
reason. You won't be able to send email from this address, as I do
not openly provide email hosting at this time, but you will receive
all email sent to the alias.

If spam starts flooding the aliased address, I will gladly drop it and
create another one.

It's a game of diversion until the Bugzilla app works in a way that
does not stamp the email address all over the place.

Consider submitting the writeup to ARSwiki as well. The advantages to
submitting to ARSwiki include:
- BMC tends to respond to things that are known in the public domain,
especially if there is a public interest expressed in the issue
- Other users of ITSM 7 can read and voice their interest in this or
other issues using the voting system that Bugzilla provides.

Re: ARSDOC 1.29 - Array Reference Error

2007-07-31 Thread Chris Akens
Thilo,

Once again, thanks for your help with ARSdoc, the quick response time
is greatly appreciated.

I have gotten ARSdoc to run without throwing any errors (so far); but
now I am encountering what appears to be perl using too much memory
and crashing. I am currently running 'perl v5.8.8 for
MSWin32-x86-multi-thread'.

ARSdoc gets through a good chunk of the ALs and continually uses up
additional memory, eventually crashing around 800 MB.

I have 2gb of memory on the box with arserver and sqlserver being the
largest running apps. It seems sqlserv and arserver gradually get
memory taken away from them as perls usage grows.

I attempted to look for a switch of some kind that would enable perl
to release memory as it is done with it; no luck however. Is there a
way to avoid the situation I am running into?

Thanks,
Chris

Re: ITSM 7 - Upgrade advice? (UNCLASSIFIED)

2007-07-31 Thread Rick Cook
Sure - the ARS upgrade is a piece of cake compared to the ITSM upgrade. You
should be able to do that on your current servers with no real problems, but
do test it first to ensure that it doesn't break anything. And read up on
the KBs, too.

your exposure to the ITSM 7 suite is, but if that and/or ITIL are pretty
foreign to you, I would definitely recommend getting some help, at least

ITSM 7.0 bug.

2007-07-31 Thread Payne, George
Hey Gang,

We're using ITSM 7.0 on ARS 7.0.01 with an Oracle 10g database.

Trying to create a new Support Group, I guess I got a little too
aggressive with the "Description"; I typed 141 characters and it threw
the error below when I tried to save it. The field properties show it
to be a 255 character field on the Support Group form, but the
underlying field that the Description is being pushed to by workflow is
apparently only 128 characters on the CTM:SYS-Access Permission Grps
form. When I trimmed the Description to < 128 characters, it saved just
fine.

---

ARERR [552] Failure during SQL operation to the database : ORA-12899:
value too large for column "ARADMIN"."T567"."C10" (actual: 141,
maximum: 128)

ARERR [306] Value does not fall within the limits specified for the
field : (Maximum length- 128) : CTM:SYS-Access Permission Grps
: Description

---

I didn't see this on the ARSWiki, so I guess I'll turn in a request to
support.

Re: ARSDOC 1.29 - Array Reference Error

2007-07-31 Thread Thilo Stapff

This time it doesn't have anything to do with ARSperl versions.
It's rather a problem of ARSdoc not recognizing enum fields (e.g. radio
buttons) with custom values (introduced in ARS 7).

Lines 818,819 of ARSdoc.pm

  my $z = $h->{'regularList'};
  @values = @$z;

should be replaced by

  if( exists $h->{'regularList'} ){
my $z = $h->{'regularList'};
@values = @$z;
  }elsif( exists $h->{'customList'} ){
my $z = $h->{'customList'};
@values = @$z;
  }

Of course I can't guarantee that this will have been the last error.

Regards,
Thilo

Seems like this should be doable. For attachments to work with email,
though, you have to enable and use email templates. I know, that's a
deal
with the devil, but that's what the docs and support say. If you're ok
with the templates, the docs show how to do what you want.

Afraid my answer would trip every sarcasm filter on the net. ;) Suffice to
say it probably isn't a problem with your environment, though there might be
something you could do with your Java settings - haven't tried that, though.

Re: Remedy 7.0 Admin training

2007-07-31 Thread Kaiser Norm E CIV USAF 96 CS/SCCE
I know I often sound cynical and/or paranoid, but that's exactly what I
expected. They are effectively squeezing out the independent Remedy
experts in the field. That way they can increase profits
(theoretically) by selling additional "professional services." They
don't like competing with the indies...which is ironic. I suppose us
indies are in a bizarre dual-hatted position--we're BMC customers and
BMC competitors.

I guess BMC's approach is, "Not a partner? Read the manual! What's that?
You don't have a development license to learn the product? Oh...sucks to
be you..."

And how, exactly, is BMC better for us than Peregrine?

Sync Search Database problems

2007-07-31 Thread Joe D'Souza
I have had this similar kind of a problem once before on ARS 6.3 on Linux..
this time around I seem to be having it on ARS 7.0.01 Patch 003..

When I run the Sync Search database operation, the admin tool crashes after
creating exactly 39983 records in the object details form and 381950 records
in the object reference form.. I cleaned up the forms, reset the nextid to 1
on both these forms and re ran the same operation, and it fails exactly at
this same point with the Admin Tool instance running the sync operation
crashing out.. I retried this a couple of times again and same results. It
fails exactly at that same record count.

The server on which I was running this was bounced (for some other reasons)
and we are still receiving this error if we try to sync the search database.

In the Application Error log file on the Events log I see the error:
"Faulting application aradmin.exe, version 7.0.1.3, faulting module
msvcr71.dll, version 7.10.7031.4, fault address 0xa1c0."

We have the out of the box apps (Incident, Problem, Change, SLM) as well as
other core applications like the Email Engine, Assignment Engine, CMDB 2.0,
Approval Server installed.

Has anyone else faced this?

I use workflow on the AREmail Message form to create tickets using push

a copy of the email as an attachment. When someone tries to open it, in

That's true. I do hope they either open that up to customers soon, or offer
a reasonable alternative for them. Many want to attend training to be able
to effectively administer the apps, and I don't see a class that does that
for them.

Initially, it was restricted to ensure that the implementation consultants
would have first dibs on the space. I don't know what the
demand/demographics currently are for that class, or whether they justify
continuing the restriction.

Re: ARSDOC 1.29 - Array Reference Error

2007-07-31 Thread Thilo Stapff

Chris,

I think I can resolve that one too:

$qual = ars_perl_qualifier($Ctrl,$query);

should be replaced by

if( ref($query) eq 'ARQualifierStructPtr' ){
$qual = ars_perl_qualifier($Ctrl,$query);
}else{
$qual = $query;
}

This problem can be corrected by changing two lines in make_ARS_pages.pl:

Similarly affected is line 5482:

Another option would be to use ARSperl version 1.85 or lower.

Even if your forms in another application there is no problem adding

Re: Remedy 7.0 Admin training

2007-07-31 Thread Rick Cook
That's true. I do hope they either open that up to customers soon, or offer
a reasonable alternative for them. Many want to attend training to be able
to effectively administer the apps, and I don't see a class that does that
for them.

Initially, it was restricted to ensure that the implementation consultants
would have first dibs on the space. I don't know what the
demand/demographics currently are for that class, or whether they justify
continuing the restriction.

John,

It sounds like you have already taken the admin 6.0 course. If so, you can
just take "BMC Remedy AR System 7.x: What's New (WBT)". It is web based,
costs much less, and covers all the new features of 7.0 without repeating

Some will be the same - how to create workflow objects and such. Some shows
detailed info about the User Tool that many may not know otherwise. If you
have taken the v6 class and have some experience working with v7, you may
not get much out of the v7 class.

European character set issue

2007-07-31 Thread Ankur Gulati (GG/EIL)
Hi All,

I have a query related to European character set support. I have checked
the archives but it all got very confusing so I am asking it once again.

The production environment supports European character set. I ran this
query SELECT value$ FROM sys.props$ WHERE name = 'NLS_CHARACTERSET' in
the production and got the result as
WE8ISO8859P1. When I ran the same query in the dev environment I got the
same result but dev environment changes all the European characters to
"?".

There is no DB charset entry in ar.conf file.

AR Server : 7.0.1

Database:Oracle9i

What am I missing?

Re: Need someone to proof read

2007-07-31 Thread Axton
Thanks Jarl. This defect does seem to match what I documented. It's
really unfortunate that my development has to slow down so drastically
until they implement a fix, which was documented to be in the 2008
release. You would think that a bug that slows down every
developer/administrator of their product would be pretty high on the
list, seeing as one of the main advantage points of Remedy is the
rapid turnaround for developing applications.

Unfortunately, many of the forms I work against are already in
applications, and getting into the habit of creating an application
for things not typically in an application would be a bad practice.
Even for large apps, like ITSM 7, using the existing application will
not buy you much since so many objects are already in the application.

Hi

We have just started using ITSM Version 7 and have found it a rather
frustrating process to say the least with lack of documentation

The current issue we face is with the Production classification and
when you get to Product level the list of products must be unique. Has
anyone else foudn this to be a major restriction and if so have you
managed a work around

The way we have set up our product classification model requies
products to appear under multiply Tier 1 and 2 options

Eg

Tier 1 Account Admin
Tier 2 New Account

Product = Remedy

Tier 1 Software
Tier 2 Standard Operating Enviroment

Product
Remedy

Re: Product Classification uniqueness

2007-07-31 Thread Kelly Deaver
Steve,
You need to think about how you are classifying slightly different.
You select the product in the Product Categorization section (This is the
What\Noun section) -
Tier 1 = Software
Tier 2 = Application
Tier 3 = Third Party (if you follow OOTB) or Standard Operating Environment
(your Example)
Product Name = Remedy

Then you also select an Operational Categorization (This is the Action\verb
Section) -
Tier 1 = Add
Tier 2 = New Account
 or
Tier 1 = Install
Tier 2 = Software
 or
Tier 1 = Change
Tier 2 = User Permissions

See, no matter what the action, the thing (Remedy application) is still the
same. The combination of the two sets defines the full reason for the ticket.
This is very handy because now you can report on say ALL Remedy issues or All
New Account issues.

Usually I refrain from plugging our product, but what the heck...

ExpertDesk is out OTB application that has also full localisation support
out of the box. By default we supply English, Dutch, French, German and
Polish locales (views and error messages). On top of that we have a full
data separation feature that allows for multitenacy, transparent for a user
and highly configurable. ExpertDesk is data driven, so for most common
things there's no need to customize the application using the admin tool.

Our website is http://www.expertdesk.com and if you are a small shop you
