RESOLVED Re: Remote MidTier Server

2010-02-02 Thread Frank Caruso
The users are saying there is a noticeable improvement.

It takes almost 1.5 hours to cache the required forms (mostly Incident
Management stuff) but once complete the users are able to enter tickets
faster than before.

I did tinker with IIS and Tomcat compression but in this configuration
(users close to web server) it was not going to make a difference

Thankx to all who supplied input.

Usually this is the result of having a floating license assigned to the admin
user. Admins can use floating licenses in the user tool, but MUST have a fixed

Just try using Demo(as UserName and Password if configured) and provide the RPC
number as 390600 in the accounts tab.

Sometimes the admin thread gets locked and doesn't respond.

Give it a shot :)

Anand,
You can go with the batch file which includes commands to run the import
utility with the specified mapping file. This batch file will be exected at
the time when archiving completes. The import utility will be run on the
archived form with a mapping already defined.

Making sense of user.log

2010-02-02 Thread Martin, Robert
Dear List,
We are running server "User" logs to see who logs in to the system and for how
long. When we look at the log file we see that there are several "LOGOUT"s and

Re: CRITICAL:URGENT: Couldn't login to ARADMIN

2010-02-02 Thread Walters, Mark
The ARERR 93 suggests that the admin thread is busy doing something and so is
not available for the Admin Tool to use. If you happen to have server logging
on you may be able to work out what it's up to from the logs. Also, depending
which platform you're on, you may be able to use ptack (Solaris), gstack
(Linux), procstack (AIX) or Spotlight on Windows to see what the admin thread
is up to. If the thread has died/hung for some reason you're going to have to
restart the server.

How to allow a specific character as first character?

2010-02-02 Thread Mark Milke
Hi there,

I have a character field that I need to convert into an integer field
or to emulate a field that accepts positive and negative numbers only.

This: 'Field1' LIKE "%[^0-9]%" works just fine to enforce numbers
only.

But how to enforce, that an input consists of numbers only and *can*
start with a "-" (emulation of negative numbers)?

Thanks,

Discovery and Servers Changes

2010-02-02 Thread Kathy Morris
Hi All,

We have host name changes all the time. Our users are sending emails to
development every time the host name changes. I am implementing a new
process where host name changes are done thru Change Management as part of
automatic maintenance. I was just curious - what are other people doing when
there are host name changes. If the host name changes do you go rediscover
the asset. Do you request your users to submit a change request, or is an
email sufficient, and then you go and rediscover the asset?

Also we find servers that are not pingable and someone is marking the
servers as down. I do not believe servers should automatically be marked as
down if they are not pingable. A server can be not pingable for many reasons
and it does not mean its down.

Re: Discovery and Servers Changes

2010-02-02 Thread Pierson, Shawn
One thing we do in our discovery process is to match on serial number as a
unique identifier for our discovery. We don't force Change Requests for that,
even for servers, because often we have VM servers that are used for a short
testing period then thrown away, or various other things that would result in
it getting out of control. For production, however, we do force Change
Requests and the full approval process, but that is very rare. Usually when we
bring up a new server, we leave the old one in place for a while as a fallback
so the new server gets a new name, and if it is customer facing we use DNS
names to point to the new system. For example, from my users' perspective,
they can go to http://remedy or http://help but on the back end if we upgrade
to a new server it goes from being named something like sou-rem01p to
sou-rem02p and most likely three separate Change Requests are initiated: 1) To
bring the new server online, 2) to install the applications, and 3) to redirect
the DNS entry to the new server.

I hope this offers some useful information.

Database Migration

2010-02-02 Thread Jot Singh
Hello all,
I wanted to bounce off a couple of things off the folks in here.I have
two servers with Remedy installed with the following specifics:-

SERVER1
OS - CentOS
ARServer Version - 7.1 patch 3
ITSM version- 7.0.03 patch 8 ( everything OOB)
Database -oracle 10 g(remote)
Midtier - 7.1 patch 3

SERVER 2
OS - Rhel 5
ARServer Version - 7.1 patch 3
ITSM version- 7.0.03 patch 8
Database - oracle 10g ( remote) (same host as box 1 but separate
DB instance)
Midtier - 7.1 patch 3
Contains customizations to ITSM modules, in - house ARS apps, and
their integration.

I need to let go of SERVER 2 but have all the data, custom apps and
customizations moved over to SERVER1. what would be a good approach to
accomplish this. I am thinking of following two ways to accomplish
this:

1) Do a DB refresh from SERVER 2 to SERVER 1 and clean out all the
server name references ,config forms. Please let me know of any
gotcha's or caveats in this approach.

2) Is it possible for SERVER1 to connect to DB instance of SERVER2 by
doing the ar.conf,TWOTASK, etc changes? I am betting it cant be this
easy.if its possible what should be my approach for it?

Thanks

Big fan of Remedy Developer Studio?

2010-02-02 Thread Terje Moglestue
I can not make up my mind if I like it or not! I am sorry if this has been
debated up and down in the past on the arslist?

I find it quicker, faster and more effective to work within the old Remedy
Administrator. There is some nice functionality within Remedy Developer Studio
but in general everything takes longer time. Well - my fingers are more used to
the Admin tool. Even so - I got better control and things are done quicker the
"old fashion way".

It might be the displays! At home I got two 24" displays. At work I am only
given one 17". Working in the Studio is more fun then - it almost requires some
big screens to work with. Still - my preferred tool is Remedy Admin.

Am I the only one who finds the transition to the Studio difficult? It is
making the ARS platform more up-to-date but I think the Studio got a good way
to go before it provides a good development environment.

Re: Big fan of Remedy Developer Studio?

2010-02-02 Thread Eli Schilling
Terje,

I'm in the same boat. I think the developer studio has a lot to
offer...but you need AT LEAST a 24" monitor (4 would be better).
Otherwise I find myself constanting resizing the frames to move from one
area to another.

I still go back and forth between Developer Studio and Remedy Admin 7.1.
For quick fixes the admin tool is easier. But if I'm building complex
workflow its nice to have the flexibility of the Developer Studio.

Cheers!

Re: AR System Email Error Logs

2010-02-02 Thread Lyle Taylor
Email ID is the field that links the two records together (same field on both
forms). If you don't find the corresponding e-mail in the email messages form,
it's possible that that record has been deleted. OOB, the errors form does not
get cleaned up when an email gets removed from the email messages form (I added
a filter on our system to fix that and keep the email errors form from getting
filled up with error messages that no longer have a corresponding e-mail in the
messages form).

Hi Lisa,

Error messages in the "AR System Email Error Log" are already linked with
the associated message in "AR System Email Message". You have to select
"Yes" for the "Display Advanced Options:" on the Email Messages record then
the [Error] tab will show. On the table field, the error from the Error Log
will show. The Table qualification is "$Email ID$ = 'Email ID'"

Re: Big fan of Remedy Developer Studio?

2010-02-02 Thread Joe D'Souza
I have been in the Remedy world since version 3 too.. I echo the same
sentiments as LJ.

I think its just a learning curve that kind of sticks out like a big fat
thorn for the first few days.. I felt the same you'll did on my first few
days with the tool, but as I kept using it, I think going back to the older
Admin tool is something I might quite not prefer because it is obviously a
lot slower than Dev Studio. Things aren't as straight forward as they used
to be for e.g. in the old tool just double clicking on an item would bring
up its properties.. no longer.. its a bit of a navigation, but its not hard
to learn where those controls are.

It's no longer as point and click as it used to be - so what - we are (most
of us) developers, and not everything out there is point and click and yet
there is a lot of good stuff out there..

Yes the Dev Studio even with its most current versions has a few quirks. I
came across quite a few (one that I clearly remember was one with join forms
but that was fixed with patch 3). And many things do not work at all as they
are options that are deprecated as they will no longer be supported - for
e.g. you can no longer share fields on a tab page, which is now called a
panel. If you have workflow that already has shared fields, it works, but
the new ones you create do not give you that option to share fields..

Many little annoyances like that.. But all in all it seems to be heading in
a good direction - with a lot of bugs along the way.. It may be a while
before all those things are really ironed out..

Its a tool that in the beginning you might 'hate to love' but once you get a
little comfortable with it, it does look promising..

Re: How to allow a specific character as first character?

2010-02-02 Thread Lyle Taylor
That doesn't look right to me. That looks like it would match text that
contains at least one character that is NOT a number. Meaning that any of
these would match that expression: foo, f00, 0a0, etc. 123 would NOT match
that expression. That said, if your approach is to match the opposite and
negate it, then that might work. If so, then you might be able to do it like
this:

'Field1' LIKE "%[^0-9]%" OR 'Field1' LIKE "[^-]%[^0-9]%"

Thanks,

Re: CRITICAL:URGENT: Couldn't login to ARADMIN

2010-02-02 Thread Lyle Taylor
On a side note, do you have Development Cache Mode turned on on this server?
If so, you'll probably want to turn it off, especially if this is a production
server. Having dev cache mode turned on can cause the admin thread to get
blocked for extended periods of time depending on what's going on on your
server. Note that changing this setting will require you to restart the AR
server for it to take effect.

Hi,

$DIGIT$ can be used as pattern. I do not know if it allows + or -...

If you create FLTR (ACTL) to control this, you have to specify all
possibilities.

NOT(
'Field1' LIKE "[0-9]" OR
'Field1' LIKE "[-0-9][0-9]" OR
'Field1' LIKE "[-0-9][0-9][0-9]" OR
'Field1' LIKE "[-0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]" OR
'Field1' LIKE "[-0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]"
)

This should allow numbers from - to 9.

application record) on submit to the Email Message form, and there is a
required field value missing (or some other invalid value), the transaction
will rollback and the email message will be deleted. In this case however,
the error should still appear in the error log.

Aby thoughts???

Hello all,
I wanted to bounce off a couple of things off the folks in here.I have
two servers with Remedy installed with the following specifics:-

SERVER1
OS - CentOS
ARServer Version - 7.1 patch 3
ITSM version- 7.0.03 patch 8 ( everything OOB)
Database -oracle 10 g(remote)
Midtier - 7.1 patch 3

SERVER 2
OS - Rhel 5
ARServer Version - 7.1 patch 3
ITSM version- 7.0.03 patch 8
Database - oracle 10g ( remote) (same host as box 1 but separate
DB instance)
Midtier - 7.1 patch 3
Contains customizations to ITSM modules, in - house ARS apps, and
their integration.

I need to let go of SERVER 2 but have all the data, custom apps and
customizations moved over to SERVER1. what would be a good approach to
accomplish this. I am thinking of following two ways to accomplish
this:

1) Do a DB refresh from SERVER 2 to SERVER 1 and clean out all the
server name references ,config forms. Please let me know of any
gotcha's or caveats in this approach.

2) Is it possible for SERVER1 to connect to DB instance of SERVER2 by
doing the ar.conf,TWOTASK, etc changes? I am betting it cant be this
easy.if its possible what should be my approach for it?

Thanks

2010-02-02 Thread Robert Page
Well I recently had to go back to the Admin tool from spending the last 12
months on dev studio and I did not enjoy it.

I agree certain actions in the admin tool are a little quicker and dev
studio has a few things they need to sort out, but I can leave them a side
as the admin tool has many years of development behind it.

Overall being able to have multiple different tabs with different form
queries and lists of workflow makes it richer and I certainly find it easier
to find workflow than I did in the admin tool.

I look forward to seeing what else they can provide with it.

Just my thoughts, we are all different so will have different views on the
subject, this is up there with windows/unix, oracle/sql, one that will range
forever more!

Cheers

Re: AR System Email Error Logs

2010-02-02 Thread Leonard Neely - FOJ
I believe this would only be the case for inbound since the error is
generated by the AR System Email Daemon. For outbound, there's no
application validation the needs to take place on submit to the Email
Messages form via a "Notify" action. As far as the 110044 error you are
troubleshooting, it sounds like you don't have an outbound mailbox
configured as the "Default".

Change Requests and the full approval process, but that is very rare.
Usually when we bring up a new server, we leave the old one in place for a
while as a fallback so the new server gets a new name, and if it is customer

users’ perspective, they can go to http://remedy or http://help but on the
back end if we upgrade to a new server it goes from being named something
like sou-rem01p to sou-rem02p and most likely three separate Change Requests
are initiated: 1) To bring the new server online, 2) to install the
applications, and 3) to redirect the DNS entry to the new server.

I hope this offers some useful information.

Hi All,

We have host name changes all the time. Our users are sending emails to
development every time the host name changes. I am implementing a new
process where host name changes are done thru Change Management as part of
automatic maintenance. I was just curious - what are other people doing
when there are host name changes. If the host name changes do you go
rediscover the asset. Do you request your users to submit a change request,
or is an email sufficient, and then you go and rediscover the asset?

Also we find servers that are not pingable and someone is marking the
servers as down. I do not believe servers should automatically be marked as
down if they are not pingable. A server can be not pingable for many
reasons and it does not mean its down.

We only have Foundation for discovery (not Topology) - so I went to ERD to
download Drift Management and it was there to download. I would like to
run Drift Management. We are on 7.5 AR System, patch 2 and CMDB 2.0 patch
1. How would I get Drift Management?

Drift Management is included with CMDB 7.5. An earlier version was
included with BMC Discovery Solution (the bundle of CD/TD/FD). It gives far
more
comparison capabilities than the compare of two things in CMDB console. It
is all run from Remedy Forms and utilizes CMDB data.

Shawn,

You should make backup of schema ARADMIN in database on SERVER2 and next you
should restore this backup on SERVER1. It should works.

In one my client I moved ITSM from windows to solaris using this method, and
it works.

** Hello all,
I wanted to bounce off a couple of things off the folks in here.I have
two servers with Remedy installed with the following specifics:-

SERVER1
OS - CentOS
ARServer Version - 7.1 patch 3
ITSM version- 7.0.03 patch 8 ( everything OOB)
Database -oracle 10 g(remote)
Midtier - 7.1 patch 3

SERVER 2
OS - Rhel 5
ARServer Version - 7.1 patch 3
ITSM version- 7.0.03 patch 8
Database - oracle 10g ( remote) (same host as box 1 but separate
DB instance)
Midtier - 7.1 patch 3
Contains customizations to ITSM modules, in - house ARS apps, and
their integration.

I need to let go of SERVER 2 but have all the data, custom apps and
customizations moved over to SERVER1. what would be a good approach to
accomplish this. I am thinking of following two ways to accomplish
this:

1) Do a DB refresh from SERVER 2 to SERVER 1 and clean out all the
server name references ,config forms. Please let me know of any
gotcha's or caveats in this approach.

2) Is it possible for SERVER1 to connect to DB instance of SERVER2 by
doing the ar.conf,TWOTASK, etc changes? I am betting it cant be this
easy.if its possible what should be my approach for it?

Thanks

One thing we do in our discovery process is to match on serial number as a
unique identifier for our discovery. We don't force Change Requests for
that, even for servers, because often we have VM servers that are used for a
short testing period then thrown away, or various other things that would
result in it getting out of control. For production, however, we do force
Change Requests and the full approval process, but that is very rare.
Usually when we bring up a new server, we leave the old one in place for a
while as a fallback so the new server gets a new name, and if it is customer
facing we use DNS names to point to the new system. For example, from my
users' perspective, they can go to http://remedy or http://help but on the
back end if we upgrade to a new server it goes from being named something
like sou-rem01p to sou-rem02p and most likely three separate Change Requests
are initiated: 1) To bring the new server online, 2) to install the
applications, and 3) to redirect the DNS entry to the new server.

I hope this offers some useful information.

Re: Big fan of Remedy Developer Studio?

2010-02-02 Thread Jason Miller
We went live with ARS 7.5 last April. At that time I figured I might as
well get used to this thing called the Dev Studio and force myself to use it
unless I absolutely could not (yes there are still a few bugs that require
the Admin Tool to make a change).

It did take a few weeks to get used to and it did slow my production down a
little while I was learning the features. Now that is over I love it
There are a number of things that can be done much faster in the Dev
Studio. There are a handful of things that do take a little long or may
require a few more clicks but the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Hopefully this will help those who are still getting used to the Dev Studio.

   - One of the first things is to Minimize all of the windows that are
Restored by default. This is a great help with the workspace size issues.
I do a lot of development on my laptop without any problem.
  - I minimize every window (tab). Once minimized an icon is sent to
one of margins surrounding the application and grouped by Shortcut Bars.
Click on the appropriate icon to show that tab. It will automatically
minimize once you move away from it (such as opening a
form/AL/Filter/etc).
  - I find that initially opening a tab that lists objects from the
icon, that the viewing area is a little small vertically. You can easily
drag the bottom down to make it larger. I have not figured out if I
can set the default size as a preference.
   - Press the period key to move a field
  - This was a major frustration point at first until I figured out how
to move a field with the arrow keys. Selecting a field and pressing
an arrow key used to move the field now it just selects the next field
making it impossible to nudge fields around.
  - Select a field(s) and then press the period key. Now you can arrow
  the field(s) around.
  - Be careful not to bump your mouse while you are moving field with
the arrow keys, they’ll jump around the form very quickly. Just press
  Esc to cancel the move.
  - I just found this out 5 minutes ago… Keep pressing the period key
and it will change what property you are changing (position, Field Width,
  Data Length)
  - Moving between fields could be really handy if I could figure out
how to open/get to the properties without using my mouse (you
can navigate
and set properties from the keyboard).
   - Setting the form size
  - This was another pain point until I figured out how to do it.
  - Open a form, click Layout from the menu bar then Show Actual View
Size. You will now have some handles to drag the form to the size you
  want.
  - Once you get used to this it is a nice feature because you have to
purposely change the size of your form vs. using the last size
it was saved
  at.
  - One note: Ctrl+Alt+M is supposed to toggle this mode on and off. I
find that I have to choose Show Actual View Size from the menu the first
time after opening a form and then the key combination will start to work.
   - The Working Lists replaces the View By Form functionality
  - Right Click on the Working List node and select "New View by Form
List. Save it and add the forms you want to see.
  - Then double click the new Working List to open (Right click to edit
  the forms)
   - Single List, View by Type and View by Form
  - When you are working in a Working List or Application there are 3
buttons in the upper right corner. These change how the objects are
  grouped.
 - Single List: lists all objects together. Very nice to sort by
Modified time and you can see all objects (Forms, Filters,
ALs, Menus) that
 were recently changed.
 - By Type: Groups objects by Type. This is what we are used to
in the Admin Tool, Forms grouped together, all Active Links grouped
 together, etc.
 - By Form: Groups objects by their primary form.
  - Combining these with the Filter Options is a very quick way to find
objects (copy and paste from a def/log file)
   - Outline
  - This will show all fields in the view that is active
  - Clicking a field will automatically jump that the field on the form.
From there you can quickly click the Properties button.
  - There are two options for how you view the Outline.
 - Tree Overview: Will show the fields in hierarchical format in
relation to their parent container. A page holder (AKA a panel)
will have its pages listed below it. Below that Attachment Pools
and Table fields will have their attachments or column listed
below them.
 - Table Overview: Shows Field ID, Name and Label. You can sort by
 any of these columns!
  - Tab Order
  - You can now set the Tab Order by changing an integer property of
  fields (Select and

Jason,

We went live with ARS 7.5 last
April. At that time I figured I might as well get used to this thing
called the Dev Studio and force myself to use it unless I absolutely could not
(yes there are still a few bugs that require the Admin Tool to make a change).

It did take a few weeks to get used to and it did slow my production down a
little while I was learning the features. Now that is over I love
it There are a number of things that can be done much faster in the
Dev Studio. There are a handful of things that do take a little long or
may require a few more clicks but the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Hopefully this will help those who are still getting used to the Dev Studio.

One
of the first things is to Minimize all of the windows that are Restored by
default. This is a great help with the workspace size issues.
I do a lot of development on my laptop without any problem.I minimize
every window (tab). Once minimized an
icon is sent to one of margins surrounding the application and grouped by
Shortcut Bars. Click on the appropriate icon to show that
tab. It will automatically minimize once you move away from it
(such as opening a form/AL/Filter/etc).I find that initially opening a
tab that lists objects
from the icon, that the viewing area is a little small vertically.
You can easily drag the bottom down to make it larger. I have not
figured out if I can set the
  default size as a preference.Press
the period key to move a fieldThis was a major frustration point at first
until I
figured out how to move a field with the arrow keys. Selecting a field
and pressing an arrow
key used to move the field now it just selects the next field making it
impossible
to nudge fields around.Select a field(s) and then press the period key.
Now you can arrow the field(s) around.
Be careful not to bump your mouse while you are moving
field with the arrow keys, they’ll jump around the form very
quickly. Just press Esc to cancel the
move.I just found this out 5 minutes ago… Keep pressing the
period key and it will change what property you are changing (position,
Field
Width, Data Length)Moving between fields could be really handy if I could
figure out how to open/get to the properties without using my mouse (you
can navigate and set properties from the keyboard).Setting
the form sizeThis was another pain point until I figured out how to
do it.Open a form, click Layout from the menu bar then Show
Actual View Size. You will now have
some handles to drag the form to the size you want.Once you get used to
this it is a nice feature because
you have to purposely change the size of your form vs. using the last
size it was saved at.One note: Ctrl+Alt+M
is supposed to toggle this mode on and off. I find that I have to choose
Show
Actual View Size from the menu the first time after opening a form and
then the key combination will start to work. The
Working Lists replaces the View By Form functionalityRight Click on the
Working List node and select
"New View by Form List. Save
it and add the forms you want to see. Then double click the new Working
List to open (Right
  click to edit the forms)Single
List, View by Type and View by FormWhen you are working in a Working List
or Application
there are 3 buttons in the upper right corner. These change how the
objects are grouped.Single List: lists all objects together. Very nice
to sort by Modified time and
you can see all objects (Forms, Filters, ALs, Menus) that were recently
changed. By Type: Groups objects by Type. This is what we are used to in the
Admin
Tool, Forms grouped together, all Active Links grouped together, etc.By
Form: Groups objects by their primary form.
Combining these with the Filter Options is a very
quick way to find objects (copy and paste from a def/log file)OutlineThis
will show all fields in the view that is active
Clicking a field will automatically jump that the field
on the form. From there you can
quickly click the Properties button. There are two options for how you
view the Outline.Tree Overview: Will show the fields in hierarchical
format in relation to their parent container. A page holder (AKA a
panel) will have its
pages listed below it. Below that
Attachment Pools and Table fields will have their attachments or column
listed below them.Table Overview: Shows Field ID, Name and Label. You
can sort by any of these columns!

Re: Big fan of Remedy Developer Studio?

2010-02-02 Thread Lyle Taylor
Joe, as I read the compatibility matrix, 64-bit app servers (Tomcat, etc.) are
NOT supported for the mid-tier, even on Linux.

Known Incompatibilities for Java

1. All AR System Java-based components are supported for use only within a
32-bit Java Virtual Machine. AR System Java-based components may not execute
properly within a 64-bit JVM and use of a 64-bit JVM is considered to be
unsupported.

Known Incompatibilities for AR System Mid-Tier

1. Unless otherwise noted, native 64-bit versions of Application Servers, Web
Servers or Servlet Engines have not been tested and are therefore unsupported.

I don't see anything otherwise noted for the mid-tier. Did I miss something?

True that.. all except the mid-tier that is 64 bit (at least on LINUX).

Have you tried using the Migrator? That might be your temporary solution.

AFAIK, all Remedy apps can only use a 32-bit JVM currently. I have tried
loading Dev Studio on a 64-bit server with loads of memory - same issue.
Remedy Admin tool (also 32-bit) handles the def files with no problems.

Strange. I am almost positive I had to upgrade the LINUX boxes at my
previous project from 32 to 64 because the new Mid-Tier would not install on
the 32 bit servers. I am not on that same project anymore but could find out
what that issue was just in case I am remembering something wrong.. I'll try

You're both correct. In AR System 7.5.00, a Linux box running the Mid-Tier
must be using a 64-bit version of the Linux OS. However, on that 64-bit OS,
the mid-tier is running inside a 32-bit JVM.

Strange. I am almost positive I had to upgrade the LINUX boxes at my previous
project from 32 to 64 because the new Mid-Tier would not install on the 32 bit
servers. I am not on that same project anymore but could find out what that
issue was just in case I am remembering something wrong.. I'll try to find out

The java heap size is already increased to the maximum that will run - and this
error still occurs with large def files. Hence my question to David Easter

64 bit JVM.

On a side note, do you have Development Cache Mode turned on on this server?
If so, you'll probably want to turn it off, especially if this is a
production server. Having dev cache mode turned on can cause the admin
thread to get blocked for extended periods of time depending on what's going
on on your server. Note that changing this setting will require you to
restart the AR server for it to take effect.

The ARERR 93 suggests that the admin thread is busy doing something and so
is not available for the Admin Tool to use. If you happen to have server
logging on you may be able to work out what it's up to from the logs. Also,
depending which platform you're on, you may be able to use ptack (Solaris),
gstack (Linux), procstack (AIX) or Spotlight on Windows to see what the
admin thread is up to. If the thread has died/hung for some reason you're
going to have to restart the server.

Re: Big fan of Remedy Developer Studio?

2010-02-02 Thread Joe D'Souza
I in fact verified that, and yes that is the case.. We did use a 32 bit Java
VM. I remember getting errors that indicated we needed to be on a 64 bit OS
on LINUX, and then I sort of vaguely remember checking the CM which told me
that while the OS needed to be 64 bit, you needed a 32 bit JVM..

With 7.5 being as new as it is, I did have the opportunity to install it
only on LINUX and Windows, and on Windows, it worked with 32 bit all round..
I wasn't 100% sure of other strains of UNIX..

I apologize for nearly sparking almost a controversy :-)

You're both correct. In AR System 7.5.00, a Linux box running the
Mid-Tier must be using a 64-bit version of the Linux OS. However, on that
64-bit OS, the mid-tier is running inside a 32-bit JVM.

Re: Big fan of Remedy Developer Studio?

2010-02-02 Thread Rod Harris
Jason,

I agree, there are a lot of great features in the new dev studio and
its worth taking the time to get used to them. I think you missed the
most important new feature for me though. That is the ability to "Show
Relationships" and then easily navigate to the related workflow. This
feature allows me to load a form and then do a top down drill in to
all of the workflow on the form. If I want to change or remove a field
I click on the show relationships menu of the field and it brings up a
list of all of the references. If I have an active link I can do a
show relationships and find all the fields and active link guides
related to the active link. If I want to change what happens when a
button clicks I bring up all of the related workflow for the button.
This is a far more intuitive way to work than the old admin tool. I
loved the old admin tool and became pretty proficient at using it but
I would never go back now.

I think there is a huge increase in efficiency to be had from using
the "show relationships" function effectively. It is worth taking your
time to learn how to use it, it will repay the investment many times
over. I have noticed a substantial reduction in debugging time. Show
relationships means less bugs and much quicker troubleshooting of the
bugs that do get through. I know we used to have a limited show
relationships feature in the admin tool but that wasn't updated in
realtime, wasn't reliable nor as comprehensive as the new function. It
gets my vote for the most significant advantage of dev studio over
admin. Coming in second would probably the ability to update selected
properties of a whole bunch of fields at once. Honourable mentions to
the outline view, the online help & syntax checking (fix the bugs in
it though) and to the ability to open lots of workflow views with
different searches etc.

The down side of Dev studio is the number of quite fundamental bugs
still in it. All of them have workarounds but I'm looking forward to
the soon to be released patch 4 to hopefully fix a lot of them. It
also uses a lot more memory than the admin tool. I'm finding that a
1Gig machine is not enough any more, even under windows XP.

The other benefits of 7.5 that really impress me lately are the
improvements made to the mid-tier. I have made the decision to phase
out the User tool for not just my end-users but for myself as well.
The performance, stability, re-caching and logging capabilities of the
web client are now in my opinion better than the 7.5 user tool. I love
the ability to close the logging window to start a fresh log instead
of having to jump in to options and change the log file name. I love
that I don't need to log out to have my changes take in the web
client. I love that all the new 7.5 user interface features work in
the web. I love that the web client now works on browsers other than
IE.

While I'm on the subject of developer productivity improvements I'd
like to plug another one of Misi's free utilities. I have just found
out how useful Misi's web based utility for generating lots of change
fields active links automatically. I have been copying and pasting all
of the fields I want to create a change fields entry for into a
temporary view. Creating a def file, and then specifying the view name
as a parameter for creating the appropriate active link def file. It
sure beats endless button clicking to create a bunch of change fields.
I still use rrrChive a lot also. It's an unbeatable utility for server
migrations and for keeping a dev environment in sync with prod.

I'm pretty optimistic about the future of Remedy development at the moment.

Rod

1) On critical incidents, Down Time Start and End date should be mandatory

Joe,
We have had a drink or two on more than one RUG. I have been on this list since
1994 and ARS developer since version 2.1. No spam my friend - just not been
active on the list for the last few years.

Terje
