Doug Mueller’s last day at BMC was Monday, September 30th. As we all know, Doug
was the creator of the ARSystem as a founding member of Remedy Corporation.

He has always retained the philosophy of supporting the user community, even
before he accepted my invitation to join this list in 1993.

After consultation with Jason and Misi, the current custodians of this ARSlist,
it was decided that I should post to this external list that Doug has left, in
the hopes that all current and former members of our community can express
their best wishes here where it can be done outside of a Corporation based
community and where Doug can of course also read them.

In Doug’s honor, it was also decided that we would shut down the ARSlist
permanently on US Thanksgiving, giving folks until then to post their comments,
and to signify the thanks we give to Doug for all he has done.

My understanding is that the archives will continue to be available, and of
course can be saved for posterity.

For my part, it was sad news that someone who has contributed so much, holds so
many forward thinking innovative patents singularly and jointly with others,
would be departing.

I was supposed to post this yesterday and it took me until today to accept that
he really had left. I won’t be disappointed if I am proven wrong …….

So you’ve written a client which registers with the server to receive alerts
and have workflow generating alerts to send to this client? If that’s the case
then the plugin is not used as far as I am aware, it’s a problem with the
server negotiating a connection with your client. Can you provide a more
detailed description of your setup? The setup is the same as you had in 7604
and you have just upgraded ARS?

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your response. I have a socket program which is listening for
incoming data on port . If any alert comes it receives and parse the
information.
I have configured the same in 7.6.04 and that worked. It's a Linux machine.
Now I'm trying that on 9.1.03 ARS installed on windows machine but that's not
working.

Please let me know if you need any clarification!

ARLiteUser .NET client for data-migration and info-updates of schema and its childs

2017-06-19 Thread Ali A. Musa
Dears:

As a legacy site where I learn a lot and contributed little, I would like to
inform you of major update on the .NET client where I added a new feature to
the data-migration.
Which will offer you the possibility of associating a childs, download the
ARLiteUser from the following link:

https://communities.bmc.com/docs/DOC-39098

BMC Remedy AR-Liter-User (Action Request Liter User Update/Archive)
Data migration of Parent-Child-schema , to help the processing of
data-migration, I am introducing additional data-migration feature to the
(ArLiteUser/ArLiteArchive) when archiving schema-to-schema you will be able To
include associated child-schema that are in inner relationship with the
parent-schema. Where the inner relationship between parent and child-schema in
such away that the parent primary-key (Request-id --> C1) is pointing to a
Field_Id into the child-schema.
Note:
* I recommend that the foreign key/field-id you points to in the
archiving of the child-schema (-K " 536870913") should be indexed.
* More child-schema can be added to (ArLiteUser/ArLiteArchive) and this
depend on your suggestion
* Review the help-document of ArliteUser.exe --> ArliteArchiveHelp
As a result the following changes will be occur on the ArLiteArchive command

documentation for command parameters)
From-Schema:
A. ArLiteArchive.exe -x From-AR-Server -a From-TcpPort -u From-User -p

Hi, it seems that we need to rename some sites in our ITSM system, 7.6.

Have you used the Data Wizard Tool in this situation, if so, have you seen any
issues, or are all forms handled correctly?

The alternative, to do it manually is a huge task.

Hope for some feedback :)

Lars,

The Data Wizard is a good tool most of the time. I have not had issues using
the Data Wizard to change Sites. It does miss changing data on some forms
i.e. the Group form Long name is not changed when changing the Support Group
name and it looks for "Requester Console" forms (which do not exist with SRM
installed) when changing a Login Name.

Thank you,

Sandra

I have to work on a client requirement in which i need to integrate external

Could you please suggest best possible way to integrate this application with

I know web service is one of the way to integrate. But would like to know
whether .NET API would be a good option to implement this.

Hello All,

Thanks a lot for the response.

The migration will be performed by some other team, we need to test whether
migration is sucessfull or not.

For this I have created some test cases for testing using remedy client and web,

So I would request few of those scenarios (only test scenarios) so that I am
confident that the unicode migration is sucessfull.

Hi,

1. Use the API to transfer both DATA and your Application (DEF-files).

2. When transering data through the API, it is good to make set Client Charset
to UTF-8, otherwise your data might get corrupted.

I have typically used RRR|Chive to do this. Just add a parameter in the
rrrchive config file saying clientcharset=UTF-8.

The problem you could encounter is that wide characters take up more space.
For example a Swedish character Å might take two bytes in the database. So
some strings might not fit in the Unicode system even thought it fit in the
old system. In this case you can increase the size of these fields, or
truncate your data.

If you use a good API-program for the transer, you will be notified on errors
where the data did not fit. Which record it is, and which field.

Do you want the ability for a user in ITSM to have the IVR system make the

Hello All,

We are working on requirement about integrating IVR with ITSM . Does anybody
has any document which could be helpfull for us during the implementation ?

As per my understanding Avaya has it's own API which can push data into either
staging form or Hpd:help Deks form ? Please correct me if i am wrong.

Subject: DataWizard update hangs while changing a Support Group name

Hi List,

I am currently having trouble updating a Support Group in ITSM 7.6.03 to a new
name using the Data Wizard.

All steps for the update remain in status pending. When I check HPD:Helpdesk or
Support Group Forms, the new group name is already displayed and the old one is
missing.
Is there a way to find out where it is hanging?

Thanks!

Best Regards,
Thomas

Re: CMDB 8.1 Index on Name Field

Better treat everything from low level, start by one Class, ensure the legacy
index in regular form, then upgrade to 8.1 and check the class-index in the new
regular form or join.

Subject: CMDB 8.1 Index on Name Field

Hello,

Does anyone have a loaded 8.1 CMDB that can advise me on an indexing question?
Our current production CMDB is 2.1 and we are moving to 8.1. In 2.1, I had to
add an index on the Name field on base element to make searches tolerable for
users. I see that 8.1 does not have an index on the name field either, and
figure I'm going to have to add it. We haven't loaded all of our CIs yet, so I
can't test that aspect myself.

Before I add the index, I wanted to make sure I'm not missing some new feature
or something else that BMC might have done to improve performance when
searching by CI name. Have you indexed the Name field, and if not, how's
performance when searching by name (and how many rows/CIs do you have)?

We have about 750,000 CIs. The database is SQL Server and the AR Servers are
Windows. The full ITSM suite is installed.

Thanks,
Thad

Hi All,

Request your expertise advice for the below error.

ARERR 8755 error message for ARSYS.ARF.WEBSERVICE

What happened is, upgrading patch 9 in ARS 7.1 in unix environment had failed
to set the environment path of Application installtion dir/bin in
LD_LIBRARY_PATH and java path which we provided during installation. When we
restart the ARSystem, it failed to load Java and webservice plugins and gives
HPI library error. We have a case opened with BMC. As per their suggestion,
after exporting Application installtion dir/bin in LD_LIBRARY_PATH, tried
separately initiating Arplugin process, once arsystem is up which loaded Web
service and other plugins properly. For this activity, we have commented the
arplugin line item in armonitor.conf.

But can't able to figure out, why we are getting these ARERROR 8755 and HPI
library error only when we start the ars with uncommenting arplugin line item
in armontior.conf. What is the cause for these errors which is not appearing
on separate initialization of arplugin..?

Thanks,
Govind

Hi All,

Is there a way to only allow certain roles/groups to update certain attributes
in the CMDB and AST:Attributes table? I understand there are the following
class and attributes to define row level security (read write) but how can
one accomplish this per attribute?

character

CMDBRowLevelSecurityfile:///C:\Users\francois\Documents\CDM-V80-HTMLHELP\html\BMC.CORE.CONFIG_BMC_ConfigBaseElement.html#CMDBRowLevelSecurity
Attribute that specifies a list of permission groups that have read-only access
to the instance data.

character

CMDBWriteSecurityfile:///C:\Users\francois\Documents\CDM-V80-HTMLHELP\html\BMC.CORE.CONFIG_BMC_ConfigBaseElement.html#CMDBWriteSecurity
Attribute that specifies a list of permission groups that have read/write
access to the instance data.

BMC.CORE.CONFIG:BMC_DefaultAccountPermissions

Data type

Name and description

character

AccountNamefile:///C:\Users\francois\Documents\CDM-V80-HTMLHELP\html\BMC.CORE.CONFIG_BMC_DefaultAccountPermissions.html#AccountName
Attribute that specifies the name of the account to which the instance belongs.
his attribute has no effect on default permissions.

character

ASSIGNRowLevelSecurityfile:///C:\Users\francois\Documents\CDM-V80-HTMLHELP\html\BMC.CORE.CONFIG_BMC_DefaultAccountPermissions.html#ASSIGNRowLevelSecurity
Attribute that specifies the list of permission groups and roles that have
read-only access to the instances specified by the MATCH attributes.

character

ASSIGNWriteSecurityfile:///C:\Users\francois\Documents\CDM-V80-HTMLHELP\html\BMC.CORE.CONFIG_BMC_DefaultAccountPermissions.html#ASSIGNWriteSecurity
Attribute that specifies the list of permission groups and roles that have
read/write access to the instances specified by the MATCH attributes.

character

MATCHAccountIDfile:///C:\Users\francois\Documents\CDM-V80-HTMLHELP\html\BMC.CORE.CONFIG_BMC_DefaultAccountPermissions.html#MATCHAccountID
Attribute that specifies an account ID. When this account ID is matched in a CI
instance or a relationship instance and when the class IDs also match, then
groups in the ASSIGN attributes receive permission to the instance. To match
all account IDs, specify the value default.

character

MATCHAppliedToClassIdfile:///C:\Users\francois\Documents\CDM-V80-HTMLHELP\html\BMC.CORE.CONFIG_BMC_DefaultAccountPermissions.html#MATCHAppliedToClassId
Attribute that specifies a Class ID that, when matched in a configuration item
(CI) or relationship instance and when account ID is also matched, causes the
groups in the ASSIGN attributes to receive permissions on the CI. To match all
class IDs, enter default.

Hope my question make sense...

Hi,
Looks like you have a mixture of short name and FQDN in the configuration.
This generally confuses the plugin server.
Check the configuration in the AR config file and in the plugin server

Hello World

Recently, I've been trying to use web services to display information from
change requests, and I get the following error from Chrome Debug console..

XMLHttpRequest cannot load http://Midtier/arsys/WSDL/public/AR
Server/CHG_ChangeInterface_WShttp://%3cMidtier%3e/arsys/WSDL/public/%3cAR%20Server%3e/CHG_ChangeInterface_WS.
Origin Webhttp://ossc-dev-swb01.devoc.local/ Server is not allowed by
Access-Control-Allow-Origin.

Now when I run chrome with disabled security, it works. But obviously that's
not best practise.

From what I read, this means I have to put the following somewhere in the
midtier application.

Response.setHeader(Access-Control-Allow-Origin,*);

But I can't find it anywhere.
Has anyone else had this problem, can someone shed some light on it for me?
I'm not very good at tomcat configuration so any help would be great

John,

I agree!
Hopefully BMC will do something about this?
Using an object name to control how the system operates is hardly best
practice. Adding a couple of flag fields on filters active links to achieve
this is certainly not going to be difficult for BMC.
I have had to defend Remedy's honour in the past from developers, dba's and
sysadmins outside of the Remedy world for various things, but this ''worst
practice is one thing that is simply not defendable

Joe,

I have seen the same issue in our 7.6.03 environment, but until now have not
been able to reproduce it at will. It just seems to happen every now and then.
I have logged a call with BMC for it a while back and they are still
investigating.
In our case, the records that were not displaying correctly were change
requests, but I expect this to be the same issue.
I have just tested your steps to reproduce the issue, but all worked fine (I am
on IE 7).

Would definitely be interesting to hear if you managed to get to the bottom of
this issue.

Phil, thanks for your response.. Thanks Misi Pat for your responses so far
too..

@ Phil: Interesting.. I’ll look through.. Is it a bug that needs to be
addressed by MS on IE or is it a ‘feature’ on IE that needs to be addressed
from the MT application side?

@ Pat: I haven’t had the time enough to test it on other browsers, but I do
intend to when I have a little more time. The null pointer happens on the last
row only which actually should not have been there if the refresh happened
correctly. On rows below the modified record, the pointer moved one row down
meaning if record n was clicked, record n+1 would actually open. Like in the
example below, if record 3 was clicked after the modification of record 3, 4
would open instead of 3. It works normally only when the fields are not
resized..

bugs I have uncovered in the past few days.. There may not be a short way to

I have tested this bug on the Overview Console, of the ITSM applications
(7.6.03 again), so that table field would be the ideal candidate if you want to
reproduce it. I have only tested this on the Mid-Tier client.

Lets say for example sake, there are 4 entries displayed on the table field on
the Overview Console..

INC0001
INC0002
INC0003
INC0004

Lets say I double click on INC0003 to open it and mark that incident as
Resolved.

And when I get back to that overview console, I either right click on that
table field and select Refresh OR I press the Refresh button on top of the
overview console table to refresh the table field..

Expected Results:
The table field refreshes and now you are left with
INC0001
INC0002
INC0004

Great.. works as expected.

The Bug:
UNLESS, prior to double clicking on INC0003, the columns on the table
field are resized.. I had resized almost all the columns from the mid-tier
client, and then double clicked on INC0003 to open it. I then marked
that incident as Resolved and closed that window after saving it. And then
refreshed the table field on the Overview Console. All the previous 4 entries
are still displayed as below..

INC0001

HOWEVER, now when I double click on INC0003, the details of
INC0004 is displayed on the new opened window..

AND if I click on INC0004, I get a null pointer exception...

This happens when I resize the table fields widths on the mid-tier client..

I haven’t tested this on the native User client but I think from past

form A (People) using the the arsperl api call.
I invoked this perl script with a runprocess on a filter on form A.
RunProcess is phase 3.
The perl script was not very complicated, it was just a few lines and just
pushes only one value to form B using an arsperl api call.

Group,

I am looking for help with a time issue we are facing. We have the

the 1200 to 1300 hour is being saved as - 0100. Meaning that if
I enter 1230 as the time it will show as 1230 until I save it but when
I go back into the ticket it shows as 0030. I have a work around
where the local system time is settings can be modified to where the
AM and PM are different and the client tool will recognize it. we
have ours set as Z for AM and Z. for PM.

Is there something within Remedy settings that will alleviate this?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, you can automatically generate ticket form Alarms or events systems such

execute command such as API (Java, C) , web-service or mail-SMTP when the probe
discover a problem using SNMP or TIVOLI event. Such kind of API I developed

Hi Howard,

The -o option for runmacro is a special mode of operation that is used
to dump the data from one or more forms quickly. It ignores the query
in the macro in favour of one passed via the -q or -Q options,
depending on the format of the query. There is another paramtere for
passing the formname also so the macro is completely redundent with
-o.

I guess this has probably arrived a little too late for you.

Please be aware that I am not competing BMC-REMEDY Utility they are the ones

Overview:
Run-Without-Macro is .NET Window-Utility that allows you to submit modifies,
delete or get BMC-REMEDY data without the need to use MACRO. .NET
Run-without-Macro (runwomacro) is similar in functionality to the BMC-REMEDY
runmacro utility. Run-Without-Macro can be executed for BMC-REMEDY AR3-7.xx
using GUI or Batch process. The utility is developed using C# window-tools
[rwomacDotNet.exe]. New features have been added to enable a selection of
fields and entering their values using a combo box dialogue. In addition to
that the utility has been facilitated with drop-down list to select the schema
after being extracted from AR-Server using GetList button.

You can try it.

Re: General Q on 7.6.3 API ARGetListEntryWithFields char 0 ( diary) field restriction removal; comment on ARSetGetEntry()

2011-02-07 Thread Ali A. Musa
I have developed a utility posted at:
http://communities.bmc.com/communities/docs/DOC-11866
The Fast-Export utility deal carefully with Diary fields and has backward and
upward computability, the aim of the utility when developed is to avoid using
ARGETLISTEntry and deployed a process based on the concept to repeatedly read
the schema rows in a sequential order. The logic initiated to read the schema
in forward or backward sequence of order. Users for backward or forward
sequence can initiate the START-Read, to identify the starting point of the
browse, and terminated with the END-Read. Try this utility and see if it will
achieve your objectives.

Overview: Fast-Export is a migration utility that copy a data of a schema or
a list of schemas from server to server for an identical schemas
(schema-to-schema) or as a normal export utility (schema-to-file) send output
to (.arx/.csv) file that can be imported by Remedy Import. Fast-Export
designed based on the concept to repeatedly read the schema rows in a
sequential order. The logic initiated to read the schema in forward or backward
sequence of order. Users for backward or forward sequence can initiate the
START-Read, to identify the starting point of the browse, and terminated with
the END-Read. Ease-of-use facilitated with .NET window client which was
developed to help users to access through a GUI, it was developed using the
feature of .NET/C# so that to be executed as Windows (future Web-Based) and

Hi Misi,

Thanks for your comments.

What I really want is an answer to the backward compatibility processing of the
ARGetListEntryWithFields() call - which is missing from the documentation.
This will enable me to decide to use it or not with this release 7.6.3. So, if
someone connected with that API knows the answer, please post it. If someone
has used this API, attempted to retrieve char 0 fields on an older server and
either succeeded or failed and if succeeded, knows - through API and SQL
logging - how the API implemented the getting of the char 0 values, I would
appreciate hearing from them.

I expect that in all probability the API will not return char 0 fields. This
is compatible I expect. But would like to know none-the-less because the
documentation is missing this backward compatibility explanation which it has
for other f() changes.

Why not turn on API logging? I always run my servers with full logging. I ask
the question because I don't want to waste time with code changes and building
test forms and data etc until I know what the scoop is.

I regularly retrieve way more than 1000 records. When dealing with millions or
hundreds of millions 100 doesn't seem like much does it? And on old servers
to boot. Char 0 fields rarely contain anything over a few k or at most a
single Mb. They are generally quite small.

You didn't understand my Administrator comment. One cannot call ARGetListSQL()
without being an Administrator. The API f() is restricted to Administrator
users.

The problem with performance is (almost) never what happens on the server but
how many IP requests you need to make on that server. Hence the evolution of
the API to reduce that packet turnaround.

Cheers
Ben

Hi,

Why not turn on API-logging on the server to see what happens?

I don't want to argue, but retrieving 100 record a time as compared to
1000 would make no significant difference in time. The difference is that a
ARGetList* instead of an ARGetMultipleEntries, performs a single
SELECT-statement for everything, instead of one SELECT-statement per record
(albeit fast ones).

As for permissions, I guess that ARGetListSQL is fine if your program is used
by Administrators only. You will also have to convert the data into appropriate
data types. And as you stated may miss something Get-Entry-Filters is supposed
to supply.

As for the last caveat, it may actually be desirable, if you want to extract
data as represented in the database, as opposed to have it changed by a
Get-Entry-Filter.

From a data synchronisation perspective, it would actually be very nice
to
be able to suppress Delete-Filters, Get-Entry-Filters as well as

Create-date can be index since its static value that initiated the first time.

But, modified-date is a dynamic filed that changes any time there is update on
the record which need huge storage to keep the index and sometimes you will end
with indexed for un-identified row and/or huge process of delete and insert of
index which affect the performance.

100K records per hour is not a lot, it's actually pretty low
With database links, I can do 2 million records per hour, and this is by
dumping all the records from one table to the other which involves a full table
scan (so not dealing with deltas here)

I would hope that in ITSM 7.6.4, the Create date and Modified Date were indexes
out of the box.
I am sure that indexing these fields would improve performance dramatically by
avoiding all the full table scans.

Two recent capabilities are intended to assist with these kind of situations.

1. The ITSM Preconfigured Suite Stack Installer. The Suite Stack
Installer (SSI) enables a fresh install of the entire ITSM Suite to be
installed in an hour or two. All of the applications and configurations are
pre-loaded in a DB image provided by BMC - so the installer need only lay down
the binaries and copy the DB image into an empty DB instance provided by you.
Time has been reduced from up to 60 hours down to 1-2 hours for a fresh
install. While the SSI cannot be used for upgrades, it is good for creating a
staging, development or POC system.
2. Delta Data Migration. The ITSM Suite 7.6.04 includes utilities that
enable you to migrate data from your production environment to a
staging/development server until you are ready to switch over from development
to production. Basically, you'll create a parallel system in
staging/development that will eventually become your production server. When
your maintenance window arrives, you can bring down both systems, transfer the
last bit of user data (which should be only a couple of hours or, at most days)
and then bring up the staging server as your new production server. Downtime
has been reduced to 4 hours or less using this methodology.

 hi Listers,

We are trying to enable archiving on ARS 5.01. Yes we are aware that we
 dont
have archiving functionality on ARS 5.0.1 (correct me if wrong). So here
 is
how I am planning to do it and would like you guys to have a look at and
with all the experience you have it will be great review.

The purpose of archiving is to increase performance while searching and
 to
 reduce database size.

Hence what I am suggesting is to create a new database with tables same
 as
in AR database. (the T Tables). Then I will create vendor forms for all
 the
forms that I need to archive and map them to the new database tables
 that
 I
have created similar to the AR T tables using ARDBC plugin. Now I will
 run
an esclation that will move the records from AR server forms to the new
vendor forms by a special user AR_ARCHIVER just as it does with the
 inbuilt
archiving. All other users will have only read only access to the archive
form as per the inbuilt functionality.

Now this will reduce the number of records on the AR Server forms and
 move
it to the archive vendor form. (At least that is the idea)

Now I am aware that I will need to keep an eye on all the changes that
happens to the base form in terms of field addition and need to
 replicate
 on
the vendor archive form. But thats ok with us as there wont be any
 change
 we
 guess.

So let me know if you guys think this will work? I am currently trying
 for a
small POC for the same will update for the same once I pass/fail and
 what
would be the pros and cons for the same.

Just trying to think OOTB :)

 Thanks,
 Viki

time. This can also be verified from the escalation log.

When this occurs, the CPU and RAM utilizations are dramatically dropping to the
lowest levels on both the ARS server and the database server. There was no
application change in the last couple of months. The problem started about two
weeks ago. It could occur 3 times a day and sometimes it works fine for days
without it occurring.

Our configuration/environment:

ARS: 7.1 patch 7
ITSM: 7.0.03 patch 9
SLM: 7.1 patch 2
SRM: 2.2 patch 4
Midtier: 7.6.03

ARS Server: Solaris 10 (16 GB of Physical Memory, 18 GB of SWAP, 8 CPUs) -
Dedicated to ARServer, ITSM, SLM, and SRM.
Midtier Server: Windows Server 2003 SP2 (2 CPUs, 2 GB of RAM) - Used only by
customers to submit service request.
Database: Oracle: 10gR2 (remote)

The following are threads settings in ar.conf:

Private-RPC-Socket: 390601 2 6
Private-RPC-Socket: 390603 2 2
Private-RPC-Socket: 390620 16 24 (FAST)
Private-RPC-Socket: 390626 8 16
Private-RPC-Socket: 390627 2 12
Private-RPC-Socket: 390635 24 30 (LIST)
Private-RPC-Socket: 390680 24 24
Private-RPC-Socket: 390693 2 4
Private-RPC-Socket: 390698 2 4

We have about 300 concurrent Remedy users during the peak hours. ARServer is
running as non-root process. The number of open file descriptors for arserverd
(~700) was well below the ulimit 3072. The FAST and LIST threads never reached
the maximums.

I have an open ticket with BMC Support but thought I might get a solution
quicker from the Arslist here.

Thanks,
Eric

On Windows servers, the HOSTID is defined by the MAC address of the Primary
NIC, so on a Windows server you could get to it by creating workflow to do a
Run-process with 'ipconfig /all'. That will provide you with the full output
then you'll have to perform some string manipulation to get the value from the
MAC attribute.

If you want portability to other platforms (*nix), you'll need to make sure
your workflow only if the Server OS is Windows, and develop a similar process
to get at that OSes' Host ID.

We have a complex application in place and yes its home grown system. I
think we can go with straight upgrade if needed after we try the migration
idea given by Misi on development server.

I am worried about is the interfaces that are present most of them are shell
scripts and C programs to push and pull data out of the system.

If I am not wrong I don't have to worry about the interfaces as it is
completely customized application and AR upgrade will treat it as some
workflow which does not involve any system form(except user form) and wont
change it except field length and type. Correct me if I am wrong.

Upgrade to ARS 7.5 (or 7.6)

Each version has performance improvements over the previous version.

One other item to make sure of is to check the required versions of your
