Re: Slow system restart/arsystem errors after restarting the mid-tiers on 7.6.4

2013-02-04 Thread Matt Reinfeldt

Howard,

What level of review have you done of your tomcat settings?
Places/things to check:

- server.xml
- tomcat6w.exe
- config.properties

Also, are you pre-loading cache? if so, are your .xml files all the
same? (across Dev/UAT/Prod). These are all little things that can have
a big impact. Also, if you're seeing user delays, have you tried
setting your mid-tiers on private RPC ports? Again, just a thought.
Not the root of the issue, but kind of like Nyquil...help relieve the
symptoms. ;-)

Good luck,
Matt R.

Done all of that. But with the latest outage we have it narrowed down to the
restarting of the mid-tiers that is causing the issues. Sent to BMC on one of
the restarts a multi gig log file.

The strange item is that we refreshed our QA and staging system, with
production data and the issue does not show up there.

much more useful BMC Communities has become as a research resource. J

You could also look into JasperSoft as a solution. It allows for dashboards,

I do not expect that later versions will work since the editor version is

- thus later editors are not supported.

If/when the version of the embedded engine is updated to a later version, I

If you have complicated reporting needs, BMC recommends considering the BMC

customers with mature reporting requirements.

Is there a reason you don't simply have Splunk configured to monitor the

The Sysinternals tools are awesome! This is the first time I've worked with
Windows servers and just a few days ago went looking for Windows equivalents
to familiar unix tools. Process Explorer, Process Monitor, TCPView, and
Autoruns are a few of them that I've explored so far. Process Monitor
(similar to truss) just helped me yesterday in figuring out that I hadn't
updated my PATH the way I should have. The email engine service wasn't
starting, and there wasn't any indication why. None of the logs that were
supposed to have been created were there. Following the process as it
started up using process monitor showed the file that was missing. It was
probably overkill to find a pathing issue, but BMC wasn't able to figure it
out either.

These tools have quickly found a place in my quiver.

Ken,
I would agree that 1.2 on a 64Bit OS is a bit hard to explain the malloc
error. How did the overall system resources look at the time?

I have found at times that the memory size is a bit hard to determine. I
use a SysInternals tool 'Process Explorer' to look at things. One thing
that I have found is that the memory on my server (32 Bit) tends to crap out
when the 'Virtual Size' hits 2 GB, not necessarily when the 'Private Bytes'
hits 2 GB...and I have sometimes seen a great disparity between the two
values. I additionally try to look at the 'Max Memory Usage' column (that
you can add) to see if at any point it actually spiked higher.

David, New changes transported to production over since the beginning of

LJ, That is what I thought. When everything hit the fan yesterday the
arserver.exe process was only using ~1.2 GB of RAM. It is a 64 bit OS so I
think that seems pretty low to cause an out of memory issue?

Lisa, We get the error in both the Mid Tier and WUT.

Ken,
It sounds like your arserver was bouncing up against a upper memory limit.
This can happen sometimes with memory leaks that don't properly release
memory once used. A restart of the service brings the system back down to
initial minimums of startup. You may want to make sure that you are on the
most recent patch of 7.5 to ensure that any known issues are taken care of
properly.

Has anyone came up with a database script that can build out the ardb.conf?
We're looking at splitting our indexes and LOBs into a seperate tablespace,
however manually build of an ardb.conf would be very time consuming. We've
been looking at ways to also do this without using an ardb.conf file and having
our DBAs manually maintain the indexes and LOBs...has anyone had any
experiences with that?

Thanks for your help!

I have an issue in a 7.6.04 environment (which was an upgrade from 7.5) when
I add an Asset it gets added to the BMC.SANDBOX dataset as designed, but
when the sandbox reconciliation job runs it does not get merged into the
BMC.ASSET dataset, and the job just deletes it.

In the same 7.5 environment that was used for this upgrade that does not
happen and it merges successfully into BMC.ASSET.

I have an issue open with BMC support but it's been slow going - wonder if
any of you arslisters have any insight.

Thanks.

Re: OT (kind of): Post Upgrade - Server Information is empty

Tauf,

Sorry for the delayed response. I was travelling yesterday. So, I've been
banging my head trying to remember where I saw this, and I haven't been able
to dig it up. The issue stems from the way that Remedy takes the hostname
and determines the domain and plugs the two together. So, in the past, I've
seen places where you'll see in the logs something like, "Failure to connect
to hostname.domain.name.domain.name". What my group has started doing is
ensuring that the following values are set properly, and then using the
hostname (shortname) in the Plugin-Server-Alias value.

Server-Name:

Server-Connect-Name:

Both of the following KBs reference the issue/solution as well. KA316519,
KA338903

Hope that helps!

Good morning, afternoon and evening all,

I have a strange issue (well most of mine are), with some users not able
open the incident search and new windows.

I have verified that the users have the correct permissions (in fact I gave
one the same rights that I have) and yet some users when they go to incident
new or search the windows loading window comes up and just hangs.

Also in the logging the last Activelink action is "ActiveLink:
SHR:LHP:EventHandler_ReturnAnyOfTheseTerms - Fri Jun 29 2012 9:13:32 AM

False actions:" and it just hangs there. If I use my login (or another that
works) runs this activelink and then goes to the next action.

Its not a pc issue, since I can use my login and everything works great, but
if I use one of the users logins that have an issue the screen just hangs.
Also I have tried this on a couple of other PCs with no luck.

We have applied the latest hot fix to the mid-tiers and restarted them, with
no luck. BMC support has no idea what might be the issue as of now (webex
planned for later today), but I just wanted to see if anyone had seen
anything like this.

By the way the load window never times out.

Any ideas?

Howard,

Have you compared their PPM:PeoplePermissionGroups records? I've seen, in
the past, where records don't always get properly created in this form.

Todd,

Thanks. I have tried even removing the cached files, restarting the server
(i.e. box), all with no luck.

The strange thing is the permission are the same for two users, one that
works and one that fails.

It only happens in the incident search or new, all other forms work great.

Howard,

I have seen similar issues where portions of a form will not display for a
user that have the correct permissions. This issue also followed the user
login on any PC. I found flushing the mid-tier cache resolved our issue.

Hope that helps

7.6.4

**

Any ideas?

Happy Friday to all and take care of your kidneys,

Howard

It will be. We wanted to make the capability available between releases rather
than forcing folks to wait until the next AR System release to get the
functionality.

It's a trend we're trying to encourage - where applicable, release small
utilities between releases to address customer issues more expediently. Then
fold those utilities (or the functionality they provide) into future releases.

I assume the community would have a positive reaction to getting resolutions
more quickly...

Re: Fresh ARS 7.5.0 install issues

2011-11-09 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
Larry,

Really silly question here, but have you checked the SQL Server
Configuration to ensure that TCP connections are enabled? And that you've
gotten them set up for the right IP Address? I've seen this cause more
headaches (especially when using cloned VMs, etc.) than anything else during
installations. Normally, it's the first area I check when having issues.

Good luck!

Look in your ar.cfg or through the 'Server Information' component of the AR
System Administration Console for the 'Default Home Form'. OOB, I believe
it is now set to the 'AR System Customizable Home Page'. You can change it
through the 'Server Information' page or by manually setting it in the

the AR System User Preference form on the 'Home Page' tab.

Shafqat,

The method that I prefer would be to call a perl script that logs into the
remedy server (via arsperl) and pulls the information from Remedy…this bypasses
all of the potential issues you mentioned regarding special characters because
the content of the field isn’t being provided on the command line. Once Perl
has it in a variable, it’s exceedingly easy to do anything with that value that
you might want.

Use a run process action. You can look up the specifics in the workflow

To re-iterate I have a character field the contents of which I would like to

I am looking to do this only via the User Tool and not through the Mid-Tier at

2011-07-28 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
Kirill,

I downloaded it and ran it on my Windows 7 x64 workstation and tried to open
a 7.6.04 SP1 workflow log file... it crashed. Repeated a couple times to
validate. Can you validate which systems this is built to run on and which
versions of log files it has been tested with?

I know that you're in the early development stages, so just wanted to point
out that that type of information will be key going forward.

Thanks,

Matt R.

Try 1408, or something a bit smaller... I can't remember the exact number i

Re: Character field --> Attachment field

2011-07-26 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
Not really sure of what you're trying to accomplish... maybe you could
clarify a bit...?

The best I can offer is to create a temp text file w/ the value you want in
it, save it to the Client's machine, and then actually attach that to the
record you're working with through a run-process. The challenge will come
with sand-boxing in the Mid-Tier and if it will allow you to save a temp
file to the guest operating system on the fly...

Good luck,

Matt R.

Re: Overlay and Database Views - Answer

2011-07-21 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
Christie,

Strangely enough I built a form in Base mode then switched to best
practice mode and added a field. The form then properly showed as
'Overlaid'. I opened up SQL Management tool (sql server 2005) and looked at
the available columns in the view that was auto-generated for that form.
The new field (the one created in the overlay) was present. So, it's
interesting to me if it doesn't work for the OOB ITSM forms. Must be some
other magic going on. :-)

Enjoy,

my query is the same on all environments. But when I look in the database I
am not seeing the new field.

Re: Tomcat 6 & MidTier 7.6.4

2011-06-21 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
Christie,

It is fairly common for the CPU and Memory usage to increase right after
restarting tomcat as it loads all the forms and workflow definitions into
cache. Depending on what you have installed, this should even out after a
short time (varies, so I can't give you an estimate as to actual length).

If it doesn't settle down, check the tomcat logs to see what it is busy with
and take it from there.

Good luck,

So, you have an overlay of the Form, View, and Field? Double-check all

Hi,
Does anyone know how to resize a Box in 7.6.4? We have created an overlay
of the form and the box . But the properties are disabled and we tried all
the tags at the corner, middle, etc and none of it is working. This is a
display only form... does this make a difference.

Re: Performance issue on Menu

2011-06-10 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
Lisa,

How are you qualifying the search on the menu? If needed, run a SQL log to
see what query is actually getting passed to the database, and work from
there. Often, it's not what you'd expect. Hopefully, you're doing
something on the front-end to narrow down what shows in that menu from 22k,
though!

Good luck,

Matt

I have a table with about 22,000 records. I have a unique index on 2 field
on this table.

On another form I have a Character field that connects via a menu to these
records. Even though I have an index, it takes a good 40 seconds for the
menu item to show all of the records when activated.

Is there any way to increase the performance on this? Looks like it works
this way on the desktop client and the midtier.

JD, it is strange. I'm fairly certain that BMC has gutted their training

**

It came as a shock to me as I realized that yesterday was May 19th and
WWRUG11 starts in a mere FOUR months.

The first price change is in a few weeks, June 10th. After that it goes up
in price.

This should be an exciting year, we are going to have wide and deep content
about all aspects

Of the BMC Remedy family of products, especially the ITSM Suite.

At the same time, there will be activities celebrating that it has been 20
years since the ARSystem was released.

It has grown and adapted to the changing computing world like few other
products have.

Of course a lot of that adaptation is down to our most special attendee,
Doug Mueller, and the others in the BMC Remedy team that

will join us. On Wednesday of the conference you get the unique to RUG event
of "An Evening with Engineering" where you get direct access to the folks

that created the products you use day to day. Stay tuned for the Keynote
Speaker(s) Announcement(s).

Much of the adaptation also comes from the vocal customers over the years
(including me) that point out to a receptive company where the product(s)

can be improved.

So, join us all at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center, for the biggest and
best gathering of BMC Remedy customers, developers and creators there is.

ROI is virtually infinite compared to not going.

So, go to www.wwrug11.com to see the latest news and I hope to see you all
in DC in September!

(well, okay, not all of you, that would be too big a crowd, how about
10%-15%?)

Kevin, Rick, Matt, Susan, Ashraf, Danielle, Paula, Jay, Ziad, Claire,
Andriy, John, Rocky . It's homecoming year J

To the other 500 Remedy folks I know .. Ditto ... to the other 1 I don't
.. Ditto .

Thanks .. Dan

just reading the list gave me some chitters, but Doug cleared up many of
those concerns and we're going to look at going to 7.6.4 instead of 7.5x.

Re: High Group Count - Effects

2011-05-10 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
Axton,

I've seen this at more than one site... seems that the breaking point is
around 85k or so Groups... however, in discussion w/ Doug M today, it sounds
as if there was an issue with how the null groups (groups not used for
permissions) were being loaded... apparently, this has been very recently
corrected... though, I've not had a chance to test in the latest versions.
If you want more details, you can contact me offline...

Thanks,

Matt Reinfeldt

Does this cause an issue with the memory footprint, login times, server

Re: Fun: how big?

2011-04-28 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
Doug,

If you're on SQL Server, you can try a variant of this:

select

  year(dateadd(s, submit_date, '1/1/1970')) AS [Year Created],

  month(dateadd(s, submit_date, '1/1/1970')) AS [Month Created],

  count(*) AS [Ticket Count]

from hpd_help_desk

where submit_date > datediff(s, '1/1/1970', '1/1/2010')

group by year(dateadd(s, submit_date, '1/1/1970')), month(dateadd(s,
submit_date, '1/1/1970'))

order by 1, 2

Then you can take the monthly counts and average them out...

:-)

Enjoy,

Matt

John,

We upgraded from 7.0 to 7.6 during the time frame specified by your challenge,
and incremented the NEXTID for HPD:HelpDesk by a few millions just to be sure
they would not overlap.

Out of respect for my ARSLIST colleagues I will not do the math, but in this

Subject: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError issue

Hello Fellow Listers.

We are trying to up upgrade our Mid-Tier server from the original release of
7.1 to 7.1 patch 9. We are stumped as to why we are getting the
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError.

We have tried everything we can think of. We upgraded the memory on the
server to 12 gb, per BMC support recommendation.
We set the java heap as follows: "D:\Program
Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_14\bin\java" -Xms1024m -Xmx1024m -classpath
We tried to go beyond 1024m but the java would not run or the ServletExec
would not recognize it, not sure which was the case.

We are stumped here. Submitted a ticket with BMC Support and they are
offering no help at all. In fact, they stated the following: "ServletExec
has been discontinued by New Atlanta, and we provide no longer support for
this product..."

Great reply from BMC support, just great. They recommend we remove it and go
to Tomcat. We wish we had the option but we don't. We are moving to new
servers and we will have the option to go with Tomcat but that is 9 to 12
months away, at the earliest. So can anyone tell me what else we can do or
try to get this working?

Our environment.
The server is a Dell PowerEdge 2650 running Windows Server 2003 5.2 on x86
with 12 gb of Memory running with the Physical Address Extension set. We are
running New Atlanta ServletExec 5.0.0.10. The server is running java.version
1.5.0_14 - java.runtime.version 1.5.0_14-b03. The server it is connecting to
is a UNIX Sun OS5.9 running on Oracle 10g.

(bpcu7604.zip)

I’ve searched BMC Developer Network, and BMC Communities. I found the hash
file, but nowhere is BPCU to be found.

Thanks,

Mark

Re: Slightly OT: Mid-Tier and Apple iPhone...

2011-03-09 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
I just picked up a Motorola Xoom, an Android tablet device, which will have
Adobe Flash 10.3 support within the next few weeks (if one believes the hype,
in any case). I plan on testing it out against our Remedy applications just as
soon as that happens (over the air update).

I'll let you all know if it does work... just some first impressions, though...
the browsing experience on the Xoom is night-and-day better than Safari on the
iPad. Much faster, IMHO, and is more comfortable to use.

Enjoy!

Matt

Joe,

Apple iOS does not support browser flash for either the iPhone, iPod or iPad.

Apple reconsidered its position on flash apps targeted for iOS, with the caveat
that there be no calls to external functions.

“Jailbreaking”, while legal, subjects the iOS device to hackers. If
“jailbroken” iOS devices are updated to a later version of IOS, it removes the
“jailbreak”, I have never heard of losing 500MB, but then I would never
“jailbreak” as it is far too risky to compensate for any perceived benefit,
which is likely free apps.

The reason for this is likely to prevent Apple’s users from suffering the
malware attacks so prevalent on PCs and lately Androids. The Apple iTunes
model is structured to protect the brand, as well as the thousands of
developers it has attracted.

Chas

**

So most of us who use these phones know that Apple iPhones (maybe iPads too?)
do not support Flash, and most of the new ITSM consoles use Flash. So its
obvious that currently, iPhones (and perhaps iPads) are not compatible with
these applications.. Do the wireless views use Flash?

Has anyone gone down the route of finding a workaround? Running remote desktop
on iPads may be a workaround if iPads do not support flash, but that would not
quite be an option on iPhones..

As jail breaking iPhones & iPads is currently legal (at least in the US), is
there a version of flash available for jail broken devices? If so, once a
device is jail broken, is it possible to update that device without loosing
anything, when a new version of an iOS is available? I’ve read a few blogs one
of which said you may loose about 500 MB of disk space on a phone if you jail
break it and then update to a new version of an iOS..

This post is for my information only and does not involve work that I am
currently doing. My current customer does not have this as a requirement, but I
figured I may be faced with this at some point somewhere..

Frank,

I don't know if you've heard of the Column Search product yet, but it allows
you to do case-insensitive searches against your Oracle database (plus a
whole lot more!!!).

If you (or others!) are interested in learning more about it, go ahead and
contact me and I can coordinate a demo of the product.

Thank you!

Re: Remedy Password Encryption

2010-11-10 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
Kali,

BMC has a White Paper called "BMC Remedy Action Request System Security",
which I believe came out for version 7.1. In there, it states:

Password security over the network

Passwords are always encrypted when sent over the network by the AR System

API. This is the case even if you do not choose to encrypt API
communications

with the AR System server.

NOTE

When BMC Remedy User displays a Flashboards object, it retrieves the content

from the BMC Remedy Mid Tier. BMC strongly recommends that you configure

the web server to use SSL to ensure that all data (including the password)
are

encrypted over the network and hence secure.

Password storage

User passwords are always stored in the database as an encrypted one-way
hash.

Once encrypted and stored, the password is not decrypted by the server at
all.

Passwords in the configuration files are always stored in an encrypted
format. The

encryption is a 56 bit DES. BMC recommends that you further protect the

configuration files by setting the appropriate file access permissions.

There's some other interesting information in there, so I'd look it up on
BMC's site if you want all the other security-related information.
Additionally, there's a second White Paper called "Security Attacks and AR
System" from 2007. It too is pretty interesting and can be used to help
facilitate conversations with your security teams.

Hope that helps you!

Re: URGENT : TABLE Space settings and T Table behaviour on form modification

2010-10-20 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
Manish,

Just for clarification, are you saying that you are allowing users to access
the system while making administrative changes? Bad mojo, if you are. The
process you are talking about is normal (creating a copy of the table,
rebuilding the table, and moving the data back in... this process is all
described in one of the manuals, I believe.. I'd have to go find the
reference), but best practice would be to lock users out of the system when
making form and workflow changes.

Good luck,

Hello List,

We have realized some delay in appearing of "T" table w.r.t Helpdesk while
creating or altering some field and saving the form.
Now could you please advise me what should be settings at DB Oracle's (10G)
end.

1. While saving Helpdesk table "T369" for helpdesk, it creates A369 table
and T369 table dis-appears, is this normal.
2. When Helpdesk "T" table disappears helpdesk starts giving error Table and
view doesn't exist, what should be done to save this pattern.
3. What should be TEMP TABLE Space size when Helpdesk "T" table size is "10
GB" or has no relation to Helpdesk "T" table size.
4. On Helpdesk Form modification, what are the possible cases when indexes
drops.
5. What else can be impacts more on Helpdesk form if appropriate TEMP space
not found.

Thanks to share the above asked question ASAP, is bit urgent to know.

Best Regards

Re: ARS v7.5 P3 and P7 client - Crystal Report issue on field value

2010-10-14 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
Susan,

A couple thoughts:

. Delete all of your .arf and .arv files

. Build a simple test report from scratch, pulling those two fields
in particular, and add it to the report repository... run and test it from
within the UT

. Install a 7.6.03 User Tool and see how the report(s) behave in it

. Validate the version of the AR System ODBC Driver

. Make sure all the "little" settings are the same as the used to
be: 'Use Underscore' option, TCP Port, DSN Configuration, etc.

. Use ARAPILOGGING to capture the API call and results

Good luck with it!

**

Hi everyone,

We have built a new v7.5 server from scratch. Imported the objects from our
current Prod server and synced the data from Prod using rrrchive.

We have numerous Crystal Reports and they do execute and produce results.

But, we have one Crystal Report that has a wierd thing occurring. There is
a selection field that have word values of IP and Modem ADR. We've been
using this report for years and it has always displayed the value correctly.

When we run the report with a v7.5 client it replaces the value IP with the
word Dual and replaces Modem ADR with the word Regular. These values don't
even exist on the form. It's doing it against a 7.5 server and against a
7.0.1 server.

If I run the report directly in the Crystal Reports application from either
server the correct value appears.

We tried the v7.5 client Patch 3 and now Patch 7 with the same results.
Have used PCs with XP and Windows 7.

I completely rebuilt the Report entry record and the active link calling the
report.

Any ideas or have you seen anything like this? I would sure appreciate some
help with this.

Thanks,

Susan

Rick/Ben,

I've installed the pre-configured stack installer and straight ars + itsm +
srm + slm installs on Windows 2008 and not run into that issue. Maybe I've
just gotten lucky? :-) I've got 4 different VMs running right now. I did
run into the occasional challenge... I won't lie about that! But I got all
of them to install. With the SQL Server install, though... I admit that I
cheated... went in as 'sa' ahead of time, created the DB and db user... then
ran the necessary SQL commands (see the install guide), to ensure it was
prepared for the installer package. I think that was the only 'out of the
norm' step I did, though. I can go back and check my notes, if you'd
like...?

Good luck!

Hi Folks,

I attempted to install 7.6.03 on my laptop in a new VM (64 bit, Windows 2008

1) The pre-packaged ITSM install (w/ MS SQL Server 2008 64bit
installed)

2) The single AR install w/ MS SQL Server

3) The single AR install w/ Oracle 11g

In all cases the installer seems to think an upgrade is desired and picks up
the first byte of the v4 IP address as a server name "192" and reports
connectivity problems to that.

These are all new installs to a new machine with the OS and the DB
installed. I did not have the loop-back adapter but that only causes
problems with the Oracle management app. (I will reinstall that later).
There are no environment vars set that I would think would interfere w/ ARS.

If anyone has any clue what the problem and work-around may be, I would
certainly appreciate it.

All the necessary steps and components are detailed in the Mid-Tier Guide.
As John pointed out, you need either a Crystal Enterprise Server or a BOXI

Also, 7.6.03 has native web reporting, which looks pretty good, though I'm
still looking for details on how to actually create new 'web reports' for
custom applications... I need more play time! :)

Depending on what you actually need to change, I would use the Administrator

Advanced Tab. There you can chose REPLACE, PREFIX, and APPEND, and then
enter your 'conventions' text. This has worked wonders for me in the past
when needing to bulk update when changes to the naming conventions occurred,
or when I inherited code from somewhere that needed to be brought into a
standardized naming convention.

Before proceeding anyone can think of any side effect of this or any

Hi List,

Just want to ask if you know any implementations of AR System 7.5 (with ITSM

the matrix but we just want to know if there are already functional systems
running on the same settings. Any known issues?

Thanks!

I've never tested it out fully, but Misi has a program for these types of

Hello,

With ARS it is not a problem. You will need to install on Windows ARS and
all application, and import all workflow.

Worst problem is with data. Because it is not easy convert database from
ORACLE to MS SQL. I think you can only to copy data through the AR Importer
from last ARS to new ARS, but if your database is very big, it can be hard
to do.

If you will install on Windows ARS on the oracle database, You will need to
redo only database from last server.

I made in one my client migration from Windows to Solaris, but database on
all servers was the same.

Hello All,

In my opinion is much easier to admin a MS SQL than Oracle. You do not need
any special skills. I have done it for 6 years. For better integration with
other applications developed on Oracle we decided to migrate ARS server to
ORCL.

My advice is to my a machine with at least 2 separate controllers. Create a
data base spread on 2 HDDs. Each HDD has to be on separate controller. On
one HDD you must keep all field in a form except: attachments, memo and
indexes.

This technique applies to any RDBMS, including ORCL & MSSQL. It delivers a
performance 10 times faster than a normal configuration. For MS SQL you can
reserve some memory and processor.

As I sayed I am not a database expert. For this reason I have maid mistackes
whe ARS was running on MS SQL. After we migrated to ORCL, the Orcl DBA
discoverd something running for 2 hours. Usesles to say that on MS SQL with
the above configuration there was no penality regardin performange.

Hi ARSListers!

We're currently planning to migrate existing Remedy environment in Sun
Solaris to Windows Server. Below is the current system information:

ARS 7.0.1 p10 running on Sun Solaris 10

Oracle 10g running on the same server

Mid-tier 7.0.1 patch 6 running on MS Windows Server 2003

Memory size 8GB

4 UltraSPARC-IIIi virtual processors each running on 1.6GHz

No ITSM applications installed. AR System is used for in-house developed
applications (consisting of 1052 forms).

average of 60-70 concurrent users. 600 registered users

Initial possible scenario I'm currently looking at 2 options below:

1.Upgrade Remedy Server to latest version, purchase new hardware, and use
the same platform (Solaris 10) .

OR

2. Full migration to Windows Server 2008, including the database migration
to SQL Server 2008. This is to reduce the cost of our support and
maintenance for the servers

Please give me any advice if what option is the best to implement. I'm
really keen on just using the same platform (Solaris) but we currently don't
have any Solaris/Oracle support which pretty much led us to looking at the
Windows migration. If you can list all the pros and cons on doing any of the
options, that will surely help me.

In addition to that, may I know if anyone here has any experiences migrating
from Unix to Windows environment recently or in the past? If you can let me
know your success stories (and migration strategy), it would be greatly
appreciated.

Any good inputs will be appreciated.

Regards...

Gabud

I have a script that monitors a Remedy table in Oracle and does a count of
records in that table. The select statement brings back a count but what I
can't seem to get the sqlplus to do is return the results of the select
statement back to a variable in the script. The reason I need it to return
the results of the count statement is to then test it in an If statement.
Below is an example of what I have tried.

I have tried some many different approaches to this and none seem to work.
Has anyone on here done something like this before?

I have been sent a couple of links to external facing ARS -- both I think
were 7.6.

One was ITSM 7.6

One was a custom simple app

Unfortunately - neither worked.

I did not do a lot of testing -- as the issues I found were early show
stoppers:

1) You cannot select an item in a row (rendering consoles useless) (The iPad
asks me if I want to copy the row)

2) You cannot select an item in a dropdown menu (rendering my available
forms useless) (The iPad does nothing -- as if I have not clicked on it at
all)

I could however login and see the homepage.

I was able to click on "approval central" and technically "get there" --
however error messages that popped must have been serious enough - as I was
unable to do anything once I got there. (meaning -- I was not able to select
the "Approval tasks" (Needs Attention, etc...) or again -- any dropdown
menus)

So -- I was unable to look at any console/click on a record/and see an
entry.

Also -- I was unable to create a record - as the forms I had access to seem
to all have at least one menu (Priority for example)

It is early days -- I expect BMC will be able to address.

I did check to see if the browser on the iPad is Acid3 compliant -- it
appears it is.

Re: Audit Log data

2010-03-12 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
As an aside. has anyone else noticed that OOB these forms have no indexes?
So, if you have a large number of Incidents with lots of activity and you
try to 'View Audit Log', it may take a while to open up (I've seen up to 45
seconds or more!).. Adding a single index to the underlying
HPD:HelpDesk_AuditLogSystem form will bring that back down to a manageable
time (< 1-3 seconds).

I honestly haven't checked in 7.5 or 7.6, though, to see if that was cleaned
up.

Anyway, Happy Friday everyone!

We are in the process of testing the move of all necessary data from an ITSM
7.0 system to an ITSM 7.6 system, which we will have to do again or at least
update prior to moving the 7.6 system into production. Several of the
tables with data are the three aliased identically (by some clueless BMC
programmer(s)) as "HelpDesk System Audit Log" - they are really
CTM:AuditLogSystem, HPD:HelpDesk_AuditLogSystem, and
CHG:ChangeRequest_AuditLogSystem. The HPD one has 193 K records, and the
CTM one has over 2 million records. We don't use Change enough for those
records to matter (138 of them).

Does anyone have a feel for how abandon-able this data is??? We have been
studying it, and don't really see any utility in bringing it forward. We
have never used it for anything, so I don't think we're going to miss it -
unless doing so breaks something in the plumbing. The act of importing our
CTM:People data generated one NEW CTM:AuditLogSystem record for every person
imported or updated (rrrchive overwrite moved 214,966 records); bringing in
the data from the source server would overwrite that, but why bother at
all?? At this point, those 2 million-plus records look expendable to me.

Any thoughts from the list??

I, like John, stopped using Diary fields long ago. As far as reporting
goes, yes, a join or a sub-report is what it takes to bring that in, but I
don't think that's a big deal, because. (wait for it.) at least you can then
view it in a readable format! Have you seen a Diary field in a report? J
Honestly, though, we don't pull those particular records into much more than
the 'print ticket' reports, as there's no need.

As to how it was "missed". good question, and I think that one more use case
has just been defined for the QA team. (note to self: test not only NULL
values, but a single space, too! . Honestly, I can see how it was missed..
The real question is, how long will it take to get a fix out?)

Meenakshinathan,

As a different approach, don't use a diary field for those comments... store
each user's feedback/comments as a separate entry in a "work log" form.
Relate each entry back using the Instance ID of the ticket. You can display
them easily enough in a table field, and/or report off of them as needed.

Just a thought.

modify all my workflows that not to push any empty or null values from
a character field to a diary field. Just want to share this info to

Issue Summary
* Have a diary field and submit a new comment on it.
* Try to add a another new comment with blank space (" ") and modify
the request.
* It replaces all the old comments with null values.
*via workflow if you push null it also replaces all the old comments
with null values.

Re: Advice on Threads

2009-06-30 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
Mark,

There's not a defined "good answer", which is why you may be searching
still. J It is really dependent on your particular environment and system
usage. Personally, I would do a couple of things:

1) Enable thread logging. Then, when your arserver restarts, watch how
long it takes for all of your threads to get started up. there will be 6
fast and 6 list right out the door, but do the other 9 start up right after
that? During a period of peak usage? Do all 15 get started?

2) Take samples (I usually try for 30 minutes at a time) of your API
and SQL logs during various periods during the day (high and low usage
times), and run them through the AR Log Analyzer script you can find on the
developer community site. That will allow you to see how the threads are
being utilized during those windows. so, how long are the threads idle? Are
the calls evenly distributed? Etc. Lots of good information there.

3) Review the need for private threads. This would be for reporters,
etc.

It's never been an exact science, and I believe that Doug M. has made a
couple posts in the past that state something to that effect (he may come
out and slap me for that. J, but I do seem to recall the KISS methodology of
adding a thread at a time until everything is performing well.)

Good luck,

Matt

Hi Everyone,

I am hoping to get some advice on the right number of threads. I have read
the book and taken the PT&T class and have never gotten a good answer on
what the right number would be.

I have about 600 users, of which 120-150 are logged on at any given time.
The threads are set up like this (thread - min/max).

Admin - 1/1

Fast - 6/15

List - 6/20

ARS 6.3, patch 20, Oracle 9.2

Re: Attention BMC/Remedy Partners and Resellers :: Remedy-Themed Internet Domains for Sale or Lease

2009-06-24 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
William,

I do run/maintain the remedyusergroups.com domain. have had it registered
for a couple years now, with no issues. It is not a 'commercial' effort,
and is there solely for the use of the community. If BMC were to take issue
with it, I would work with them to come to an agreeable solution, but, to
date, I have not been contacted by them.

Given that we've got one of the strongest user-communities I've ever seen,
I'm hoping that this type of legal action would be directed at people
actually abusing the 'remedy' trademark for financial gain instead of Remedy
advocates looking to keep the product and community strong.

The FTC forbids using registered trademarks in domain names for commercial
websites unless you are the owner of the trademark. Period. If you use one
of these it is quite possible (no idea how likely...) you would get a
registered, hand delivered piece of mail telling you to cease and desist,
courtesy of BMC's legal department.

This does not apply to non-commercial usage.

Let's say you grabbed "Remedyusergroup.com" domain though to put up a
national user group. For any of use who make our living in the
Remedy-related world you would have a very hard case showing the split
between where you earned your living and where you didn't make any money off
of this - especially if you had your corporate website in your signature
like mine below.

Furthermore, the entire problem - even if it was sorted out to your
advantage - would probably involve the other party's lawyers, government
lawyers, and your own lawyers. The costs alone could easily sore into the
six figures in a very short period of time.

For me the use of any trademark I do not own is an unnacceptable risk.
Using the Scott Adams equation: A bad idea is any idea with a limited upside
and a huge potential downside.

If Remedy had remained a stand alone company, those prices MAY be justified.
As it is... he has been paying to maintain the domain names for however long
he has had them for no real reason.

I understand that Bing is a well known and respected member of the Remedy
community, but what he is asking for the names is extreme for something that
is in a sense being "retired" in the corporate naming world. I would be
willing to bet that in the next 4 or 5 years, the name "Remedy" will
disappear for "BMC" whatever.

We are the Cult Of Remedy, not BMC! ;)

Hi all,

Hope someone has a clue about this one...

We are experiencing a sudden breakage on our production server. And as
usual, no one did anything, nothing was changed by no one on the system, the
server, the OS or the DB or the DB server...
But this is what is going on.

We have a basic workflow that does the following:
Active link execute on Return on field
Action: push field to from B
Filter on form B
Execute on Submit
Consume web services.

The results: arerr 92 time-out at the database ... server busy ... etc

This is not happening once in a while, but constantly now.

I ran the API, SQL and Filter logs
If I compare the logs of working and not working with the exact same value
being used, this is what I get:

I see the AL being launched the push field started then nothing, not even
the API CE being made. The system seems to go dead (timing out after 2
minutes) and returning the error 92.

This is only happening on workflow pushing data to form B.

The DBA checked the integrity of the tables (T, B H) and says that
everything is fine there nothing. This is a tiny table of barely 2000
records.
Since the DB itself was running low on memory (200Mb), we added 2 Gb this
weekend. Still not working.

Any one has a clue on where to look now?

we are on AR 7.0.1 patch 003

Shafqat,

Your best bet is to get client-side logging (Active Link and Filter) to see
what is setting that field or performing that Push action. You can log on
both environments and then compare them to find differences (I love the
tool, "Beyond Compare" for file comparrison!).

2009-05-01 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
Richard,

If memory serves, you must be on 7.0.03 patch009 (ITSM) before you can
upgrade it to the 7.5 series. Obviously, you'll need to upgrade ARS and
Atrium CMDB first, though. It should all be covered in the installation
guides for ITSM 7.5 and ARS 7.5.

If you're asking about what patches are reliable. if I were going to 7.5,
I'd go straight to patch001 for everything. Keep in mind, I've not worked
with that in production, though. Only in labs. If you're on ARS 7.1, then
patch006 has been pretty stable everywhere I've seen it (in prod and dev
environments).

Re: Data Visualization Definition Changes

When you say, "restarted the server", do you mean your AR App server or the
Mid-Tier server that serves up the DV? I would make sure to do the latter.

Good luck,

Matt

Subject: Data Visualization Definition Changes

** Hi,

I have modified a css file in Date Visualisation Defnitions for the
SRMSServiceRequestBrowser module, but I can't see its made any difference to
the layout. Flushed cache, restarted the server just in case, still no
change. Any idea how I could get this change to apply?

Thanks,

Raido
