OT: Friday Humor - The Green Thing (Eco Friendly Iniative)

2013-05-24 Thread bullcreek.com
Since it is Friday and it has been one of those weeks I feel compelled to put
what an (older) friend sent to me here. I do live in Austin, TX, after all
(where plastic bags are now banned, and you get charged for paper bags - Except
at Target, apparentyl)

.
Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the me the
other day, that I should bring my own grocery bags because plastic
bags weren't good for the environment.

I apologized and explained, We didn't have this green thing back in
my earlier days.

The clerk responded, That's our problem today. Your generation did
not care enough to save our environment for future generations.

She was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to
the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and
sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and
over. So they really were recycled.
But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags, that we
reused for numerous things, most memorable besides household garbage
bags, was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our school
books. This was to ensure that public property, (the books provided
for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribblings. Then we
were able to personalize our books. But too bad we didn't do the green
thing back then.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every
store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't
climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two
blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the
throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling
machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry
our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from
their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that
young lady is right, we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every
room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief
(remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana . In
the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have
electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile
item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion
it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up
an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower
that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to
go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.
But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup
or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled
writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the
razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just
because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back
then.
Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their
bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour
taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire
bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a
computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000
miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint. But
isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we older
folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?
..

The WWRUG2013 Advisory Board is excited to announce that the Call for Papers is
officially open as of April 2, 2013 for the WWRUG13 Conference!

The Process:
Our process involves a few steps –
1. Login to the portal (www.wwrug.org/register) and create an account

characters or less), and an Abstract (full description of the topic).
3. Select the Technical Skill Level (Entry Level, Intermediate, Advanced,
or None), Classification (Product, Service, Case Study, Educational,
Integration, or Other), Categorization (AR System – Core, ITSM, CMDB, ADDM,
Custom Application, OnDemand or Other), and Specification (Technical,
Management, Training, Vendor or Other).
4. Topics will be reviewed and notices of status will be sent to you as
the submitter by 15 May 2013.
5. If your topic is selected by the WWRUG13 Board, you will be notified by
15 May and will be asked to submit a rough draft of your presentation (in the
format of the PowerPoint template downloaded from the portal) using your
account and the portal where the account was created.
HELPFUL TIPS TO MINIMIZE THE REVISIONS ON YOUR PART
(aka - common errors found by WWRUG Advisory Board):
A. Ensure you download the template from the portal
B. Omit any extra formatting (like company specific headers, footers,
proprietary notices, etc.)
C. Review each page to make sure you have the page number, header, footer,
in place
D. All slide titles need to be on a single line
E. Make sure the font is consistent throughout the entire presentation
F. Graphics may not cover the header, footer or page number, must be
visible on the page and not extend past the borders
G. Use spell check to ensure your content is spelled correctly

6. Once the WWRUG Advisory Board reviews your draft, you may be asked to
make changes and upload them via the portal.
7. Deadlines are strictly enforced this year. As part of the submission
process, you will be presented with the Speakers Agreement and asked to agree
with the terms before you can proceed. Failure to meet the deadlines will
result in your topic being dropped from the Conference, no exceptions.

WWRUG12 - Breaks All Records! (And the confidence a Remedy Rockstar tattoo provides)

2012-09-24 Thread bullcreek.com
So I can tell you with confidence that we have the Greatest number of sessions
EVER at a WWRUG event since we started putting it on in '09 (over 100 Breakout
Sessions this year and we had to add another room to our normal schedule of
five rooms every day). We have (according to my sources) the highest number of
registrations to date this year for any WWRUG we have ever put on for you (and
we still have 20 days to go)! Plus (S)...I just re-ordered 1000 of the
Remedy Rockstar tattoos made famous by all of you at our Celebration in '10.

Perhaps I should give you a few key reasons to attend WWRUG12 this year (In no
particular order - Credit: Doug Mueller):

10. The Greatest Number of Breakout Sessions to date for a WWRUG event.
9. Renewed Vigor for Evening with Engineering (No one leaves until all
questions are addressed - including Darius and Doug - note: alcohol may be
involved)
8. Access to BMC Engineers, Product Managers, and Technical folks (at least
three folks from Support are going to be there and one of them, Carin Sinclair,
is going to present on how to get the most out of your support calls by
leveraging logs etc.)
7. You get to see all of our Sponsors and visit their booths to see/touch/test
drive some really cool new/updated tools/apps including the centrally located
BMC booth! (http://www.wwrug12.com/sponsors.html)
6. Entertainment - We are brining back The Brew this year
(http://www.brewmusic.com/) - but they will be doing two Smooth Jazz sets for
us this year, plus our very own Remedy Rockstar band including guest
appearances by some of our own Remedy crowd (you will just have to come to
find out who!).
5. You get to see the new tattoo we have created for this year's conference
(plus we will have some more Remedy Rockstar tattoos for when you are out
strolling the streets at night in your Hawaiian shirt - make sure you roll up
your sleeves to reveal your ink, Theresa...)
4. Great food (trust me we have tried it!)
3. Lots of nearby activities, restaurants, shopping, etc.
(https://maps.google.com/maps?f=qsource=s_qhl=engeocode=CQSsqW8jx6h4FeqnOQIdVB68-CknFWMju8yPgDE9hgdwL7bS-gq=restaurants,+loc:+The+Fairmont+San+Jose+Hotel,+170+South+Market+Street,+San+Jose,+CA+95113aq=sll=37.332631,-121.04sspn=0.010988,0.026071vpsrc=0t=hie=UTF8hq=restaurants,hnear=ll=37.332972,-121.888976spn=0.010988,0.026071z=16)

last time)!
1. You get to see all of your ARSList and WWRUG friends!

WWRUG12 Submission Deadline - Extended!!

2012-07-03 Thread bullcreek.com
Hello fellow ARSLister's and WWRUG'ers,

A couple of great things have happened since my last (mid-week) blast to you
(from Bangalore, India).

1. We have extended the deadline for submissions to July 9, 2012 to
accommodate lots of folks on holiday and PTO.
2. We have expanded the scope of the conference to include presentations on
ADDM, Analytics, and Cloud based services (Remedy as a Service).
3. We have received over 30 NEW submissions since my last email to you all two
weeks ago.

With that said, you have less than a week to get your topics submitted to the
board for review. If you have not submitted your topic you can do so at
www.wwrug.org/register (registers you for topic management, NOT the conference).

If you have already submitted your topic, you should have received an email
from us acknowledging your submission. I simply don't have the bandwidth to
list all of the topics here. Once we have made our selections, they will be
posted here and all the submitters will receive email notices of their topic's
status.

Looking forward to seeing you all in San Jose, CA this October.

WWRUG12 Weekly Topic Update

2012-06-01 Thread bullcreek.com
Hi Listers,

Here are some more great topics that we are considering for WWRUG12 in October
this year. Still have to run these by the board, but wanted to update you on
what we are looking at for Breakout Sessions. You still have until July 1,
2012 to get your topics in to us. After that we close the window to accept
topics. Looking forward to seeing you all in October.

The following submission has been made by Walt Klos from Seamless Technologies
Inc..

Topic Details

Topic: The tribulations of bringing SCCM data into BMC Atrium
Abstract: This is the age of data. We have lots of data around us, but
not so much information as we need. The BMC Remedy ITSM tool is a great was to
drive a technology services business, but it needs information to make the
business run. SCCM is a unique tool for administering a large population of
Windows (and other platforms) systems. SCCM creates information about these
systems as lists of computers, components, and software. This information would
be very valuable for financial analysis and corporate controls and planning; so
if the information could be copied to Remedy then Remedy would have a much
better database for financial analysis.

The Seamless Data Pump is a tool that handles that transfer. Drop it in place
and two hours later you are moving information to Remedy.
Synopsis: THE PROBLEMS OF SCCM TO ATRIUM INTEGRATION
Why should SCCM data be a benefit to financial asset management?
What are the major issues that arise with SCCM integration?
Present a product that can handle the major issues of integration.
THE SEAMLESS DATA PUMP
Describe the creation of CIs and relationships.
Focus on the special capabilities that make customization a breeze.
Display the extensive ETL simulation capabilities.
Demonstrate the awesome normalization capability.
Discuss real use cases where the product has been tested to its limits.
Technical Skill Level: Intermediate
Classification: Integration
Categorization: Vendor
Specification: Technical

The following submission has been made by Hugo Vuong from BMC.

Topic Details

Topic: Optimizing the AR Web Stack for Performance and High Load
Abstract: Sizing a web application stack correctly to support the
targeted web load is non-trivial. Beyond the hardware, allocation of resources
and configuration of the JVM, web container, and web application plays a
critical role in maximizing the load handling and performance of the web
application. This presentation covers the monitoring, adjustment, and
configuration of the BMC AR Platform web stack (JVM, tomcat, Mid-tier) to
optimize performance and handling of web load.
Synopsis: This is a very complex topic and is highly specialized; however
sufficient tools and techniques will be introduced so that the participant can
monitor the web stack behavior and make adjustments. A guideline for
interpreting monitored result is provided to guide the participant in making
optimal adjustments.

The presentation includes:
- JVM monitoring
- JVM configuration and resource allocation
- Garbage Collection
- Heap allocation
- 64 bit JVM optimization
- Tomcat HTTP service threads configuration
- HTTP service threads pool
- HTTP request buffer pool
- Midtier configuration
- ehcache
- AR API connection pool
- connection pool management
Technical Skill Level: Advanced
Classification: Other
Categorization: AR System - Core
Specification: Technical

The following submission has been made by Yogesh Ketkar from Vyom Labs Pvt.
Ltd..

Abstract: How to do performance testing of Remedy using SilkPerformer and
JMeter. Pros and Cons of
Commercial vs Open Source tool. Best practices of writing scripts in both
SilkPerformer and JMeter.
Synopsis: This session will cover:
* Customer case study of performance testing using SilkPerformer.
In particular
• how to come up with virtual users count
• how to do performance analysis and reporting
* Test suite we have developed using JMeter.
Technical Skill Level: Intermediate
Classification: Education

I've been working with DevStudio since it first came out in 7.5.
Learning curve was fairly steep at the beginning but definitely worth the t

I would never ever go back to the old Admin tool, even if that was a possib

If I had to be involved in a project with ARS 7.1 or older and I had to do
a lot of development, I would put all my energy to convince management t o
u pgrade to at least 7.5 in order to be able to use DevStudio, so I'd do
all the development with DevStudio: I hope this sums how I feel about De

what would I change about Dev Studio? What really annoyed me in DevStudio 7
.5 was the over-grouping with the parentheses in qualifications in join
f orms, active links, etc, but that has been fixed. I don't know if it w
as 7 .6.3 that fixed or not, since I jumped from DevStudio 7.5 to 7.6.4 SP
2, and 7.64 SP2 does not over-group with parentheses, at least not how
 7.5 did.

So to answer your question with DevStudio 7.6.4 SP2, what would I change? I
can't think of anything right now

Re: Sr. Remedy Administrator/Developer - Denver, CO

2012-03-28 Thread bullcreek.com
I once had a recruiter ask me (in response to MARKET consulting rates for
qualified, senior folks who can 1) keep you from falling into any number of
pitfals, 2) get you out of the ones you already fell into) - whether or not we
walked on water. I told him There are some who think they do, and there are
the rest of us who know the truth.

Re: DevStudio Tool

One of my favorite features is the ability to tear off the tabs
(Relationship, Forms, Filters, Properties etc.) and stick them on other windows
as well as stacking forms or workflow side by side to compare them.

BTW, IMHO, to me the 3 killer features of DevStudio are the

 - Undo-Redo
 - Ability to type (or paste) field names in the set fields or push fields m
appings (along with the auto-complete feature)
 - performance is really awesome compared to DevStudio (specially working wi
th ITSM whaich has a ton of workflow)

the record relationships feature is very nice too, the wayrelationships are
displayed, etc so that would be the 4th.

I've been working with DevStudio since it first came out in 7.5.
Learning curve was fairly steep at the beginning but definitely worth the t
 ime and effort.

I would never ever go back to the old Admin tool, even if that was a possib
 ility.
If I had to be involved in a project with ARS 7.1 or older and I had to do
a lot of development, I would put all my energy to convince management to u
pgrade to at least 7.5 in order to be able to use DevStudio, so I'd do all
the development with DevStudio: I hope this sums how I feel about DevStudio
and the old admin tool. . I truly believe that once you are comfortable wi
th DevStudio, you will be much more productive (if you already are an exper
 ienced developer, that is).

what would I change about Dev Studio? What really annoyed me in DevStudio 7
.5 was the over-grouping with the parentheses in qualifications in join f
orms, active links, etc, but that has been fixed. I don't know if it was 7
.6.3 that fixed or not, since I jumped from DevStudio 7.5 to 7.6.4 SP2, and
7.64 SP2 does not over-group with parentheses, at least not how 7.5 did.

So to answer your question with DevStudio 7.6.4 SP2, what would I change? I
can't think of anything right now

If there was one thing you would change about DevStudio, what would it be?

Re: Very Soon: BMC RD proactively Sharing and openly Interacting

2012-03-01 Thread bullcreek.com
I think BMC should host a one hour radio show where listeners could call in
with their questions about AR System, Mid Tier, Workflow, Apps, Integrations,
etc. with Doug Mueller and perhaps David Easter, Matt Laurenceau, or perhaps
Lisa K (who did a great job on the 7.7 Beta calls), host the show kind of like
a BMC Remedy version of Car Talk.

Interestingly, this was brought up to me years ago but I wasn't sure I had the
bandwidth for it. Now I am certain that I don't! :-)

 This is awesome Matt!

Jose, I definitely see your point. My thought is having it in a phone call
format will provide a bit more of a dynamic interaction.

For example I can post a discussion in the BMC Communities and there is a
good chance I will get a reply from somebody at BMC. A response isn't
guaranteed though. Now BMC obviously has the right to not answer a
question on the phone but the expectation is you have their time right then
and there and somebody will respond. If it will be anything at like the
beta calls have been a BMC employee will take the task of following up on
(appropriate) questions that could not be answers right then an there. In
the Communities your question could go without a response.

Aside from that it seems to me that text on a web page can't cover a topic
quite as thoroughly as a voice conversation. It is great for listing step
by step instructions but does not work quite as well for working out
 conceptual topics.

Maybe the call can be recorded and posted to the Communities?

WWRUG12 - Prepare for the Call For Papers!

2012-02-01 Thread bullcreek.com
Hi Listers,

Just a heads up to let you all know that we will soon be putting out a call for
papers for the WWRUG12 to be held this year in San Jose, California. Now is
the time to prepare your topics for our upcoming conference. We are looking
for topics that fall into categories such as Case Studies (challenges you or
your customers have faced and how you overcame them), Tips and Tricks (not just
limited to ITSM, but anything Remedy related that you feel could help your
fellow listers), Tools and Applications that help you get your daily work done
(or ways to leverage existing tools/apps), Integrations that are related to our
beloved AR System or apps built on it, etc.

You will need to provide us with a synopsis of your proposed paper, how it
relates to the AR System, the benefits it provides, the level of technical
expertise it pertains to, which category it falls into (Case Study, Tips
Tricks, Tools, Applications, Integrations, etc.), be able to present it in a 45
minute timeslot that includes a brief introduction, your topic, preferably a
live working demo of your idea (not just powerpoint slides), and at least ten
minutes for questions and answers at the end of your 45 minute window.

For those of you that have come across some valuable information you are just
dying to share with your colleagues, now is the time to gear up to be a Remedy
Rockstar and share your knowledge with your Remedy family. For those with
updates to tools/apps that have made their way into our lives, we look forward
to learning about the new functionality in the latest releases. It doesn't
have to be Earth Shattering but needs to be of value at any level (remember we
always have some new folks every year).

I talk to enough of you who are Customers, Partners, or Employees of BMC to
know that in addition to the ideas presented on the List there are some very
cool ideas being shared about how to do things that either haven't been done
before, reminders of things that we take for granted, or improvements on the
way things have been done in the past using our current toolsets and
methodologies.

In addition we will be looking for BMC to share with us some of their new
developments in the AR System, Applications and Integrations and how we can
leverage them at our jobs and for our customers.

Our goal is to get the papers approved and the topics published as early as
possible to allow you more time to take the agenda to your management and get
approval to attend along with the growing number of attendees (yes we have
grown each year).

In just a few short weeks, we will open the Call for Papers, publish the
timeline and provide an online (Remedy based) app for you to enter your
proposed topics.

I am thrilled to let you know that the Board has already had several really
great and relevant topics already even before we officially launch the Call for
Papers!

So put your fingers to the keyboard and prepare to submit your topics very soon.

We look forward to hearing from You!

Kay,

If you are in the client tool (User Tool) and have logging turned on, you can
also watch the client side activity in a realtime logging window by going to
where you have the the user tool installed and running the ARLogDisplay tool
normally located here (C:\Program Files\BMC
Software\ARSystem\user\ARLogDisplay.exe). You can see the form (schema)
listed there as well as the Active Links that are called and any of the other

 applications.

When logged into an application (such as Incident Management) with admin

objects or templates are being used?

Definitely identifying myself as a newbie here. I've taken the BMC
Remedy AR System Foundations Part 1 and 2, but nothing like this was
touched on in class. Feeling a little overwhelmed by the enormity of
the systems but I have to start somewhere!

Are you working in a server group? If so, your objects may not show up on the
others servers in the server group immediately after saving if you are using a
load balancer to connect to the server group and not directly to a specific box.

Running the arsignal command from will force the objects to be synchronized
between the servers you specify. Depending on a few factors (# of servers in
the group, network connections/bandwidth between them, amount of objects to be
synch'd etc.), it still may take a bit for the objects to appear on all of the
servers in a group.

**
Hola Friends,

Anyone else running ARS 7.6.04 (SP1 in our case) seen a delay from when they
save a filter to when the update takes effect?  I’v e got some custom
backend filter processing on a staging form and in workin g with it and making
changes I’m finding that if I update a filter, the change does not
immediately take effect (as it always has in Remedy in my experience).   If
I make the change, wait for the save to com plete, then retry my update
operation that triggers the workflow, the workf low does not reflect my
changes immediately.   I have to wait abo ut 90-120 seconds and then I see
my change take effect.

Anyone k now if there is now some form of caching related to filter objects
now?   Perhaps due to the new Overlay feature?   Found this interest ing
and thought I’d share.

Nate.

Hi Stan,

I can believe that. The exception to the rule would be the owner of the
property next to me, the Hon. Lloyd Doggett who along with his wife, Libby,
sent me (unsolicited) a flag flown over our Nation's Capitol building (with
certificate) on the event of each of my Daughter's births as well as a personal
(handwritten) letter of congratulations (he has daughters too) from both of
them. Very nice (and fiscally responsible) people and thoughtful considering I
can't even vote for him (I am not in his district).

A U.S. Congressman was seated next to a Remedy Consultant on an airplane so
he turned to him and said, Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you
strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger.

Obviously annoyed, the Remedy Consultant, who had just started to read his
7.6.04 upgrade document, replied to the total stranger, What would you want
 to talk about?

Oh, I don't know, said the congressman. How about global warming,
universal health care, or the debt ceiling? as he smiled smugly.

OK, he said. Those could be interesting topics, but let me ask you a
question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff - grass.
Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and
a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose that is?

The legislator, visibly surprised by the Remedy Consultant's intelligence,
thinks about it and says, Hmmm, I have no idea.

To which the Remedy Consultant replies, Do you really feel qualified to
discuss global warming, universal health care, or the economy, when you
 don't know poop?

Think about this when you are on your plane to DC for WWRUG11 in September!

Version Control in ARSystem?

2011-07-19 Thread bullcreek.com
Dear Listers,

I have been looking into ways that folks are using any form of Version Control
with the ARSystem. I am interested in your feedback as to whether you use the
built in version control features that came with 7.5 (or remember that it came
out with that version at all), if so what features you use (Object Reservation,
Object Modification Log, Save Definition Files); third party products (VSS,
Subversion, homegrown - ARSystem Custom App, spreadsheet etc.) or even bother
wtih it at all.

If you do have feedback I am also interested in the size of the developer staff
that you have (1, 2-5, 5-10, 10+), and of course the version of the ARSystem
that you are on. Helpful/interesting would be whether you are using OOB
Applications (ITSM, or other), Custom, Customized OOB (Highly Customized,
Minimally Customized), and versions of applications (yes I do know of people
still on HD 4.0, and ITSM 6.0). O/S, DB are not as important from my
perspective but versions of third party tools if used are.

Looking forward to seeing you in DC!

Re: Version Control in ARSystem?

2011-07-19 Thread bullcreek.com
LJ,

Thanks for the info. I had used MS VSS with version 5.1.2 of ARS and was the
only developer for a project in AZ where we were required to use the external
application to check out/in our objects. It was very painful even for a single
develper waay back then. Since then I developed an application (in Remedy -
big surprise) similar to what is now in ARS with version 7.5 in that it tracks
objects by type, allows the def file to be stored as an attachment, but had a
status to track the modification from Proposed, Developed, Tested, Released,
Withdrawn, (or something like that, it was in 6.0 - a few years a ago). I also
used it for data (csv, arx files etc.), reports (used to store the OOB crystal
report before modifying - which saved a cusomer's bacon at least once;
remember, Janna?), and provided the ability to assign it to a project or task
(useful for reporting/metrics). It was useful when customers would say I just
want it out of the box, we don't have (Time/Money, fill in the blank) for ANY
modificiations (sound familiar?!). At each meeting and review, I would simply
log the requested changes and implement them in the project. Once the project
was was over I would perform a report and show the differences between the OOB
and modifications Proposed/Released as well as those that were
Proposed/Cancelled. Fun tool for metrics that introduced reality into the mix
plus showed where schedule was impacted and why (and who)...but I digress.

I have data from at least two of BMC's customers (customer provided, not BMC)
that in one case has over 10 developers, only uses the logging feature (not
object locking or def creation) in all environments DEV/SIT/PROD; and another
where there are less than 10 developers and they use the def file creation
feature with slightly modified OOB ITSM and few ongoing modifications without
performance issues.

One BMC customer is interested in any experiences/warnings/advice in
integrating Subversion specifically with 7.5/7.6 of ARSystem using ITSM that
has been customized.

 Phil,
I'm currently running 7.6.4 and utilize Object Modification Log only. We
use this in our Dev/Test systems to keep track of who did whatwe use it
in prod to keep track of what changed with each releasethe dev/test
doesn't survive the release cycle. We have had off and on requirements in
the past to use ClearCase...but we fight back hard enough on 'why' and they
can't provide anything that it will provide that the ootb object log
doesn'tso we haven't implemented anything beyond internal tracking. Our
system is completely custom and currently have 10+ developers on the team.

4.5.2, I think that is when they killed the Motif client. This was
the same time (when the Motif client was killed) that multiple
 assignee groups were introduced.

 When were active links introduced?

 As far as the web:
 - 4.x series used ARWeb (cgi); there was also RemedyWeb (java
application, or was it an applet?)
 - 5.x introduced the new java based web interface, mid-tier; I think
RemedyWeb was dropped at the same time

There are also the introduction and removal of the various sub-components:
 - WAP
 - Tivoli Link
 - Palm
 - and some others...

There is also the localization stuff:
 - before 6.x???
 - 6.3 and earlier required a separate ARServer per character set
 - 7.5? introduced fully localized arserver

There is also the email engine:
 - With 5.x? the email engine was re-written from a C based server
 daemon to a java daemon
   - supports 255 chars in the message body
   - lots of other things introduced: mailboxes, protocol support,
 templates, attachments...

Starting with 7.0, some things were introduced into the approval server:
 - generate signature list prior to requesting approval

2009-05-05 Thread bullcreek.com
Chris,

As you know, I used to rotate it between Houston, Austin and Dallas as well as
bring it to Northern California and Southern California. While I feel those
areas are now up and running on their own and supported more locally, the
meetings I held in Houston and Dallas seemed to be missing each other's local
in attendance (few Dallas folks in Houston and vice versa). However, when we
held the meetings in Austin, we got the missing folks from each location at our
meetings. Hence, we now hold them in Austin where we get the most attendance
and on a Friday when folks can enjoy a bit of relaxing in the Live Music
Capital.

Interestingly enough the first RSVP I got this morning was from the Dallas
Metro area (Dr. Chris Strauss) and the second was from Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Re: Sending Emails to Groups

2008-12-03 Thread bullcreek.com
If you create a user with the login of 0 (zero) and then try to send an email
to that user it will find it. What happens is that the server first looks for
records in the User form with a matching login of the string you specify, if it
doesn't find any matching entries, then it will look in the Group form for any
matching entries and if it finds one, it will send the email to all members of
the matching Group entry.

One of our users was able to bring our Remedy server to its knees over the
weekend. They put 0 for a value in a field that was expecting one or more
email addresses. After some hunting I was able to figure out that Remedy
took this to mean the Public group and sent an email to every user
registered with our Remedy server. This turned out to be 1000's of emails.
It looks like Remedy translates the Public group and then creates an
outgoing email for each email address in the User form.

I thought I could easily block this from happening by making sure the value
in this field contained something that looked like an email address
(contained a @) but users could do something like [EMAIL PROTECTED], 0,
[EMAIL PROTECTED]. Also, there are many fields throughout the application
that allow a free-typed value (not a good idea but it is what I am stuck
with) so I would have to build a lot of work flow.

I was wondering if there was something that could be done to stop Remedy
from translating values to Groups or a way of catching this happening during
  email processing?

  Thank you

  Frank

 Veanna,

Joe and LJ are correct. The license tool is a binary that is on the server
when you install the software. I used to have a SUN desktop sitting on my
desk just to run the license tool on our Solaris server.

Don't ask me why but I still have 4.x client and admin installs (windows ve

 Veanna,

4 didn't have a form? On version 4 licenses were stored on the disk. On Sol
aris (any unix system for that matter) the Remedy licenses were stored in t
he /etc/arsystem/servername/ folder in a .lic file.

This is a text file with the license stored in a particular format.

What do you want to do? Add? Remove? Delete a license?

You just might be able to do it bypassing the tool by doing it manually by
editing this file. Its not rocket science really as the information isn't e
ncrypted by the tool, its very much in a free text format.

After doing whatever you wish to do on the licnese file, you can run the ar
signal -l AR Server Name:AR TCP Portnumber. The arsignal command will b
e found in the bin folder of the AR Server installation folder.

Its a sort of a backdoor towards doing what you might be looking to do, but
 I hope it helps.

But the fields are read only, and I don't know how to get the information i

 Veanna,

There used to be a licensing tool, that had to be opened on the server. If
I remember right it had too he used directly on the server and not remotely
. You didn't have to log on. All you needed to do was open the tool and tha
t tool would use the information in the ar.cfg or ar.conf file in case the
license file was stored at any other place other than the default location
and then interpret the contents of the file and display it within the tool.

I think a version 3 tool is compatible with version 4 for licensing and as
Roger pointed out the licensing structure changed in 5 so it will not suppo
 rt 4.

Sometime between now and then, he and I are going to drive cross-country on
a BBQ tour. We'll start and end in Seattle, but we intend to hit all of the
areas of the country famous for BBQ: Texas, Louisiana, the rest of the
South, North Carolina, Memphis, Chicago, and Kansas City.

We're still planning the specifics, and here's where all y'all come in:

I would love to know THE places to go in your part of the country (assuming
it's one I mentioned above - this will be almost entirely SOUTH of the
Mason-Dixon line) for outstanding BBQ, whether they're famous or a
hole-in-the-wall. We'll stay away from big chains for the most part (we
have Famous Dave's up here), unless it is a local/regional one with a good
 local reputation.

 Thanks in advance for sharing!

Re: Sending notification via SMS

2007-04-25 Thread bullcreek.com
As one of those who have had to send SMS messages for years to multiple
providers, the URL used from a web page to send an SMS message may not have any
information that is useful in sending a direct SMS message with standard filter
notification actions for ARS. Most all SMS capable phones will have an email
address that is used to send a text page. For Sprint it is (phone
number)@messaging.sprintpcs.com - [EMAIL PROTECTED] for example], but the
format differs from carrier to carrier. Ideally you would want to make your
workflow data driven so that you could lookup and fill in the format based
upon a carrier designation in the user's record (ie. - if person A has Sprint
selected in their preference record, then fill in their phone (10 digit) number
(ie. 3335551212 for a phone number of (333) 555-1212) concatenated by the
postfix mentioned above for Sprint @messaging.sprintpcs.com and set the
corresponding value to a field used by the notification in a filter action. If
you can't get the format for each carrier easily, have a user from that carrier
send you a text page and use the corresponding format to send messages to users
on that network.

:-) Frank,
:-)
:-) I would also suggest a command line option.
:-)
:-) Take a wack at wget or maybe even (if needed) a Perl script to talk to
:-) the web site. That should get the job done on any OS were the ARS server
:-) can run.
:-)
:-) If you wanted to get real fancy you could write an ARF plugin to do the
:-) work. (Maybe even use the Java Scripting plugin to get the job done with
:-) some Java code.)

Re: Barcode scanners

2006-10-11 Thread bullcreek.com
The ones that we reccomend to our customers (like Claire Sanford at Memoral
Hermann and Linda Hill at SHARP Health Care) are from the Symbol line. We also
used these with Sony Pictures for a project with Joel Sender as well as at our
client, Reliant Energy in Houston.

I just spent a few days with Claire last week migrating some workflow developed
in HD 4 to ITSM 6 and the same wireless devices we installed there 4 years ago
are alive and working well today. They are not as cheap as the WASP devices,
but are far more reliable. I have sources that provide me with pricing lower
than what I can get directly from Symbol. Email me off list (to help reduce
the noise on the list) and I can provide you with competitive pricing on the
HW (and Remedy licenses too for that matter).

:-) A client of mine is searching for a commercial barcode scanner that
