Re: MQ Series Integration with Remedy CMDB (Event Driven)
Hello Shiva, We used to have a DSO alternative solution Remedy server to Remedy server within the Navy years ago using Websphere MQ and ARSXLink. I don’t know how applicable it would be to what you are trying to accomplish, but thought I would mention it. The company that produces ARSXLink has a ton of expertise with Websphere MQ and Remedy, and they may be a good resource if you don’t have any other options. Re: CMDB/Asset Management Training
Jason, I agree with you. Unfortunately I'm in a position where I'm not in charge or involved in developing or providing input on the process side. I'm just on the configuration/development side and we've done a basic POC concept and they like it and want to roll out. I just fear I might be limited or doing things out of a best practice methodology because of a lack of training. We are using all Remedy for our stuff. Currently running 8.1.00 and see upgrading to 9.1.03 or .04 by end of the year. That's ARS, ITSM, CMDB, etc. That's the focus/training I'm looking for. To properly and effectively use those tools. Re: [EXTERNAL] Re: [EXTERNAL] Re: CMDB/Asset Management Training
You are not the only person that is disappointed in the change of direction. BMC has reassured on the BMC Communities, even after the Innovation Suite split, that they are committed to continuing to move AR System forward as a (development) platform. Hopefully they have some big surprises for us because I am not seeing it. Much of the last few years has been "use Smart IT if you want modern interface" and "we are not going to implement Dev Studio enhancements because that is not where our focus is" (some of that may have been inferred based on actions, lack of action and tone of interactions with customers). Maybe somebody that is going to T3 will report back some wonderful news? Jason On Thu, Oct 5, 2017 at 6:51 PM, Fawver, Dustin <faw...@mail.etsu.edu> wrote: > ** > > Ok. Re: [EXTERNAL] Re: CMDB/Asset Management Training
Well, the purpose of a CMDB is to track your system hardware. Ideally, that happens through discovery. Most discovery platforms require root access to servers and such. That can be a significant hurdle for some places. Alternatively, manual entry of CI data can be done. Data consistency can be a real issue there as well. Slow CMDB Recon Query
Hello ARSListers, I have a customer with a 7.6.04 CMDB reconciliation job that is generating a poor-performing SQL query (roughly 1,000 ms to process). I can't find any filters that generate the query, so I'm guessing it's resulting from a plug-in. There's not much to do about how the plug-in generates its queries unless some of the WHERE clause parameters are stored as data. Does anyone have any insight into whether the ReconciliationIdentity phrase of the WHERE clause below is stored as data somewhere, and if so then where? I'd sure like to replace that ...!= '0' comparison to avoid a full table scan. Re: CMDB Deprecated classes for 9.1
So, there was an issue brought to my attention that does cause a lot of confusion and mis-understanding that is related to this topic. The topic is the fact that between the 7.6.04 and later versions of Asset Management, there are some ATTRIBUTE changes to the BMC_BaseElement class of the CMDB. The CMDB itself does not change its classes or attributes and has not added or removed anything related to this. So, this is not a CMDB upgrade topic. But, when you upgrade the Asset Management and ITSM foundation, there is a change to those applications that affects the CMDB. There are about 100 attributes that the applications used to add to the CMDB. They no longer add them to the CMDB. And, with the upgrade to after 7.6.04, a new table is created outside the CMDB within the application with those attributes and the data is copied from the CMDB to that table. And, then, those 100 or so attributes may or may not be removed from the CMDB – it depends on the option used during the ITSM upgrade whether the fields are removed. No classes are affected, but, there are about 100 attributes that MAY be removed from BMC_BaseElement that were added by a previous install of ITSM. If you started with ITSM 8.0 or later, this is a non-issue as the attributes were never added to the CMDB by ITSM. If you have not installed ITSM, this is a non-issue as the application is what added the attributes to the CMDB. If you did have ITSM installed with version 7.6.04 or earlier and upgrade at some point, this data move and attribute removal may occur. There is no class deprecation. But, there are some attributes removed from the CMDB by the applications if you meet the ITSM versions noted above. And, it is under your control whether or not the attributes are removed from the CMDB. You can actually leave them in the CMDB if you would like, your choice (there is about a 40% performance improvement of the CMBD if you let the application remove them from the CMDB – but it is your choice). Doug Mueller From: Mueller, Doug Sent: Tuesday, November 22, 2016 9:20 AM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: RE: CMDB Deprecated classes for 9.1 Harsh, You are not finding any information about deprecated classes as there are none between 7.6.04 and 9.1. There are only two points in time where we have removed classes Between 1.0 and 2.0 back in 2005 or 2006 timeframe. This was when we removed probably ½ of the classes as there were way too many and they were not useful. It was actually the #1 most appreciated “new feature” in 2.0. There was no deprecation feature at that time so the classes were simply removed. Back in the 7 or so range, the BMC_Impact class was deprecated as we moved the concept of impact from a separate and special class into being a part of every relationship within the CMDB and so an intimate and integral part of the system. We introduced the concept of a deprecated class at that release so that if you referenced this class, we still “interpreted” its existence off the data in other relationships. That is it. Re: CMDB Deprecated classes for 9.1
Harsh, You are not finding any information about deprecated classes as there are none between 7.6.04 and 9.1. That is it. There have been no other classes removed since that time. As you note, we have added some attributes to classes and maybe even a few classes, but nothing has been removed in the window you are looking at. Re: CMDB extension for Telecom Network
SMI (formerly somewhat TuringSMI) seem to have now teamed up with BMC for their OS3 product - I recently saw this as a product offering. This is a Telecom spec / compliant application with the associated extensions for the CMDB that I believe are certified. When I saw this some years back, the product was quite raw but I am sure it would now be polished up somewhat if BMC are now listing it on their pricing sheets. A trial maybe available for download? Hi Joe, Thanks for the information. Could you please let me know where i can find that lightweight extension so that i can customize it according to our network elements need, i have seen some BMC.ADV_Network extension on BMC communities but i can't find the same on BMC site. Re: CMDB extension for Telecom Network
To the best of my knowledge there isn’t a ready made tailored extension to the classes you are looking for. You would need to custom build these. If I recall correctly, there used to be a lightweight extension available for telecom customers to plug into the CMDB in the past but I do not think it was further developed to incorporate newer classes that surfaced with time in the telecom market. Re: CMDB CI's data transferred...
Basant, A big question is whether the data will remain in these other tables and that is the master copy of the data and where it will be maintained and you want it "discovered" into the CMDB and kept in sync there OR is this a one time transfer into the CMDB and then the CMDB will become the owner and master source of this data. Step 1 Create a dataset that will hold this data. This will be the drop location for the data from this source. Step 2 Create appropriate normalization (if any) and reconciliation ID and reconciliation merge jobs and activity for this data to clean, identify, and merge it with other data and into the production dataset Step 3 IF the data is going to remain in the custom tables and be owned there, use a process like AI to create a job that loads the data from the custom forms into the CMDB, mapped as appropriate. Take advantage of the feature to check timestamps (and key off last modified time) to only load things changed since last load. IF the data is going to be one time converted, I would still use AI to do the one time load as it is just the safest way to move the data -- but you could do some kind of custom data move as it will be done one time. Then, once moved, you can eliminate the old custom tables and just manage the data in the new dataset as being the master owner of the data now. Really, these directions are the same regardless of what data source you decide to integrate with/move into the CMDB. Re: Atrium CMDB implementation
Firstly, be absolutely sure that you need a custom class – can’t you use any of the out-of-the-box classes? If not, you can create new classes in Atrium Explorer or, for ease of migration, you could create a CMDB Driver script to do this. Choose a namespace of a few characters – you don’t need to follow the BMC pattern of ABC.DEF unless you plan to create many classes and want to separate them for some reason. Also, use a non-BMC prefix for the class, e.g. ABC_YourNewClass If you create the class ‘legally’ it won’t be affected by future upgrades. You may also want to create an asset form to make the class visible in asset management. You could use the sync UI function for this but personally I don’t trust it as it adds loads of unwanted hidden fields and tabs – though I haven’t tried it in V9. Re: Loading of Asset Lifecycle Status and other Asset attributes to CMDB in version 8.x
Hi, Thanks for your suggestions. For initial load of the data, I accept it would be possible to use the AST forms and forget about normalization and reconciliation of the data before it hits the golden dataset and load everything straight to it. However, ongoing maintenance through regular updates of data to a staging dataset is not an option for asset attributes. My main concern, and I perhaps did not make it clear enough in my original post, is that asset attributes can no longer “enjoy” the functionality available in Atrium CMDB. These attributes can no longer be used in the reconciliation engine, their values cannot be compared between datasets and difference reports available in reconciliation engine cannot be generated to highlight any potentially un-authorized changes. It seems nobody raised this as a concern so far, so I am perhaps taking wrong approach to this. Hope somebody can share their experience with how they go about regular CMDB data updates that include asset attributes in Atrium v 8.x Thanks and regards Jiri Pospisil From: jortega999 . In Atrium Integrator Spoon, if I select CMDB Output step as the means of writing the data to CMDB class, the Asset attributes are missing. I could add them by a separate push to AST:Attributes using AROutput step, but the link is based on reconciliation ID, which I do not have at the time when importing the data to the CI class as that would be only available once the data has been through the identification phase of reconciliation. Re: CMDB reporting
Hi Frex, For the second part, I would suggest looking at field in CMDB called AttributeDataSourceList. For each attribute on the CI populated/updated by reconciliation it holds the source dataset (unless the CI/attribute was created/update directly in the given dataset manually). The first question might be bit trickier, but if you are using a dedicated remedy account for ADDM to pass the data to CMDB, this may get passed to the created CIs as the Submitter. CMDB Sycn not working even CMDBSYNCUI.log file is missing
Hi Guys, I have created new custom attributes in BMC_ComputerSystem class through cmdb driver, which is successfully created within the class but now when i am trying to sync those attributes through cmdb sync utility nothing is happening, even the log file for cmdbsync is missing from the log folder. The only entry i can see is in application pending form with CMDB SYNC as pending status. Please let me know if you have seen similar kind of issue before. -- *Thanks regards* *“Harsh Chaudhary”* *Impatience never commanded success*** ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Where the Answers Are, and have been for 20 years

Howard, Not sure 100% but I do know there are some companies out there who get sold on SNOW for ITSM but use BMC Atrium for the CMDB. Don't ask me why that makes sense financially but it is being done. I'm sure the sales teams try to work out a deal so they get at least some revenue without making the customer pay for the entire suite. Stranger things have happened though... Re: CMDB Question
From what I recall... View overlays are the only acceptable overlay on CMDB forms. That will not affect the data model and/or workflow; it is done if you need to pretty up the UI of a CMDB form (add trim/buttons, adjust field layout). If you make structural changes to CMDB forms in Best Practice mode (in an overlay) it will not only throw the metadata out of whack but the CMDB plugins/clients will not see the changes. The CMDB plugins/clients (RE, NE, etc.) only look at Base mode because all CMDB changes should be done via the class manager which results in changes in Base (loosely they are managed by BMC code even though a customer made the change). Beyond that there are a few circumstances that the class manager cannot currently handle and need to be done via Dev Studio. This is a rare case where non-BMC people are advised to make the change in Base mode (regarding the delete overlay verbiage discussed over the last week, this is a valid reason to work in Base mode). I recommend if you think you have a CMDB situation where you need to make a change in Base mode consult with BMC first to confirm.
