We installed hotfix 8.1.00 201402031033 Hotfix (sp2) on our 8.1 sp2 Weblogic
build the other night to help fix some of the NULL pointer and caught exception
errors. At this time it appears the hot fix may have corrected some of these
issues as the number of users reporting the issue has dropped off.

Re: Caught Exception issue...

2014-02-21 Thread Pierson, Shawn
That's been our experience as well. If we don't flush the Mid Tier cache we
have no issues, but if we do, there is still a subset of people that will get
caught exception and HTTP 500 errors. Fortunately, we're slowing down our
need for 8.1 fixes so we should be doing less code changes to ITSM 8.1 going
forward. Hopefully before our next big custom activity BMC gets the Mid Tier
completely fixed.

Great thread, brings a smile.

Every time I install a newer Dev Studio (like the recent 8.101 upgrade), I
re-install my 7.6.04 User.exe because the newer stuff sometimes breaks it and I
refuse to give it up. It still works against the newer servers, at least for
now.

I still do my table exports from User because I find the web interface to be
click-happy and clunky.

I didn't want to hijack this email thread for my own issues but hopefully
Suresh can get some benefit from what I've run into as well.

We have been on ARS 8.1 for a couple of months but just upgraded ITSM to 8.1
(including the two patches) as of this past weekend. In testing we ran into
the Caught Exception errors that Suresh ran into, but the ITSM patches seemed
to have addressed most of those. The problem now is basically instability.
Tomcat itself keeps crashing, so I upgraded it from patch 32 to patch 37
tonight to see if that helps.

There have also been a never-ending stream of Mid Tier issues, but of very low
intensity, from 7.6.4 on with Internet Explorer. My understanding is that
Internet Explorer has defects in it that cause it to not correctly refresh
cache, and the way the Mid Tier is designed that becomes a big issue. However,
we also have run into issues with 7.6.4 that are worse on 8.1 with specific
user's cache on the Mid Tier becoming corrupt somehow and generating errors.
The only way to resolve those is to flush the cache on the Mid Tier, but doing
so messes up a small but vocal percentage of other people who have to clear
their IE browser cache.

So based on the suggestion below, I am planning on looking into the Mid Tier
hotfix. I'll open a ticket with BMC tomorrow if my system is still unstable
after the Tomcat upgrade and try to get that hotfix but I have an I.T. form of
PTSD because our implementation of 7.6.4 a couple years ago was delayed a few
months due to BMC support not being helpful with Mid Tier issues (which
resulted in a custom Mid Tier patch for us, which so far hadn't been necessary
on 8.1.)

So with all that said, I tried to guess the 8.1 path on the FTP site below but
couldn't find one that worked. I also tried searching their Knowledge Base
because I often find hotfixes in there, including several that have gone in
with my 8.1 install.

Thanks,

We are also consistently having this issue with it getting much worse with the
move from 7.6 – 8.1, although this would also be in line with users moving from
IE 8 to v9 or v10. As others have mentioned some people get it consistently
while others never get it. I have been unable to identify anything different
between the users setup. Our AR, ITSM, Mid Tier are all 8.1 patch 1. I have
not had the chance to try the latest service pack so it would be great to hear
if it resolves or even helps this issue.

Re: Caught Exception issue... (Mid Tier 8.1 Hotfixes)

2014-02-07 Thread Bray, Joshua
Regarding the caught exception errors, we've noticed 2 issues. One is the
cache issue (which only happens to some users) and the other is a compatibility
issue with IE9 and IE10. I've seen probably 20 or 30 various caught exception
errors. There is one specifically related to the compatibility issue. That
error is Caught exception :Unable to get value of the property 'nodeType':
object is null or undefined. The only difference between that error and the
other cache related errors is 'nodetype'. When we see that 'nodetype' error, we
send the users instructions on how to run in compatibility mode. If it's a
different Caught exception error, we have to clear the cache.

I'm curious if others have noticed something different.

move from 7.6 – 8.1, although this would also be in line with users moving from
IE 8 to v9 or v10.

2014-02-07 Thread Pierson, Shawn
Based on an earlier email in this thread the first thing I would try in your
situation would be to upgrade Tomcat. I can confirm that the upgrade I did to
Tomcat a few nights ago helped in my organization. It didn't resolve
everything as we were able to get a weird random HTTP 500 error (which required
the user to clear his browser cache) but that is much more rare than the Caught
Exception errors or the Tomcat crashes that we were getting before.

Thanks,

So based on the suggestion below, I am planning on looking into the Mid Tier
hotfix. I'll open a ticket with BMC tomorrow if my system is still unstable
after the Tomcat upgrade and try to get that hotfix but I have an I.T. form of
PTSD because our

Tony,

We are on the latest Hot Fix and still not working. Our only solution for
now is to tell our customer to revert to IE8 for now until we have a fix
in place. BMC is telling us they have their top engineer on our
particular issue looking at all our logs, def files etc. We have had many
webex with the support team. We are now setting up a webex with that top
engineer.
One thing that kind of work for us is to clear the cookies since clearing
the cache and compatibility mode doesn't work. That doesn't fix the
entire issue but partially makes it workable.
Thank you,

The logic was changed so that if a problem is detected, then the error is
still displayed but nothing is stored to memory. Thus the next time the
object is requested, Midtier will try to cache it again... hopefully more
successful the second time.In addition, the error should give a date/time

Re: Caught Exception issue... (Mid Tier 8.1 Hotfixes)

2014-02-07 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
The bad thing is I need IE 11 to solve a completely separate issue.

The issue is my users want an easier way to put a screenshot into a ticket.
The current process is:
User gets an error in an app.
   Take a screenshot (PrtScn).
   Open up Word
   Paste the screenshot
   Save the file.
Open the help desk web page to create a ticket and enters info needed. We
have a button to add attachments, so the user clicks the button and adds the
saved word file.
Click submit to create the ticket.

Since we are on 7.6.04 I figured Hey I can add a Rich Text field to the help
desk form for them to paste into. I added the field on Dev and tried it.
   Take screenshot (PrtScn)
Open up dev help desk page in FireFox
Select the new screenshot field and paste; Eureka, the printscreen image is
there (Found out it is an inline image img
src=data:image/png;base64,EncodedImageDataHere alt= )

The problem comes in when I try it with IE. When I paste the screenshot image
nothing appears. I open word and paste and the image is there, so I know it is
in the buffer. Doing some Google searches I find out IE doesn't support
accessing the buffer for anything except text until IE 11.

Don't you just love working with computers on some days?

Fred

I remember an issue a user had here a while back that turned out he had

We are also dealing with this issue.
We are running ARS 764 sp2 with Midtier 8.1sp2 (Weblogic) on IE10. Some users
get the error on a daily basis and others never receive it. If we being down
Weblogic and manually remove the cache files (and viewstats) it helps for a few

Doesn't BMC have any release/quality assurance anymore?
Seems like when they release something they then have to

If this was feedback on the JSS SSO Plugin, I'd be embarrassed. It sounds like
BMC need to spend one year doing nothing but improving stability. Like fixing
the dozens if Javascript errors that will never go away through flushing caches

Thanks,

Shawn Pierson

In our case, we are encountering this regularly on IE 8, ever since our upgrade
to 7.6.04. We also experience this in IE 9 and 10, but the majority of our
users are on IE 8. The only solution we've found is to flush the mid-tier cache
and have the user then clear their own cache and hit Ctrl + F5 on returning to
the Remedy home page.

We've also installed the hotfix provided by BMC, to no avail. We were hoping an
upgrade to 8.1 in the near future would be helpful, but it appears that may not
be the case. :(

I didn't want to hijack this email thread for my own issues but hopefully
Suresh can get some benefit from what I've run into as well.

We have been on ARS 8.1 for a couple of months but just upgraded ITSM to
8.1 (including the two patches) as of this past weekend. In testing we ran
into the Caught Exception errors that Suresh ran into, but the ITSM patches
seemed to have addressed most of those. The problem now is basically
instability. Tomcat itself keeps crashing, so I upgraded it from patch 32
to patch 37 tonight to see if that helps.

There have also been a never-ending stream of Mid Tier issues, but of very
low intensity, from 7.6.4 on with Internet Explorer. My understanding is
that Internet Explorer has defects in it that cause it to not correctly
refresh cache, and the way the Mid Tier is designed that becomes a big
issue. However, we also have run into issues with 7.6.4 that are worse on
8.1 with specific user's cache on the Mid Tier becoming corrupt somehow and
generating errors. The only way to resolve those is to flush the cache on
the Mid Tier, but doing so messes up a small but vocal percentage of other
people who have to clear their IE browser cache.

So based on the suggestion below, I am planning on looking into the Mid
Tier hotfix. I'll open a ticket with BMC tomorrow if my system is still
unstable after the Tomcat upgrade and try to get that hotfix but I have an
I.T. form of PTSD because our implementation of 7.6.4 a couple years ago
was delayed a few months due to BMC support not being helpful with Mid Tier
issues (which resulted in a custom Mid Tier patch for us, which so far
 hadn't been necessary on 8.1.)

So with all that said, I tried to guess the 8.1 path on the FTP site below
but couldn't find one that worked. I also tried searching their Knowledge
Base because I often find hotfixes in there, including several that have
gone in with my 8.1 install.

 Thanks,

Re: Caught Exception issue...

2014-02-05 Thread Susan Palmer
We did Mid-Tier last October for the first time. (8.1) The mantra of
Flush, Flush, Flush was a daily thing since we do a lot of enhancements.
Then we realized we could change the settings in the browser to do it when
they close their browsers.

IE 9-10 are the only ones we support, 11 is not useable at all. Firefox is
what I find to be most dependable.

But with all that flushing going on, we still get the Caught Exception
errors of various types. I have found we need to do what we call a 'Super
Flush' about every 3 weeks, in fact we are establishing a regularly
scheduled maintenance. It's the full flush of the actual mid-tier servers,
not just the user browsers. The 'Super Flush' clears the issues away.

I find it amazing that these errors can affect only a few of our 200 users,
not everyone, so something more is going on. These errors can also affect
Report Console reports. Sometimes you can access the Change form but not
the Case form. It has so many faces you cannot simply compile a list.

But when it comes right down to it, 15 min of downtime to 'Super Flush'
both our mid-tiers is an easy fix. We're in the process of setting up a
cron job to do it weekly on Friday nights.

I also found that after we run it, the arplugin stops working so you have
to kill it so it starts again.

There were some known cache corruption issues that were discussed at
WWRUG13. The newer hotfixes (7.6.04, 8.0, 8.1) I believe attempt to
address these. We recently applied the Dec 8.1 hotfix and I have not heard
any reports of these types of errors. Admittedly these were not originally
reported to my team until many had suffered much pain so it is hard to tell
if hotfixes actually did the trick.

Re: Caught Exception issue...

2014-02-04 Thread Pierson, Shawn

Thanks,

Shawn Pierson

2014-02-04 Thread Rick Phillips

Shawn,

Ditto for us on most of what you've said. We have a brand new 8.1
implementation, and are p2. Most of the issues are reported by our IE
users, and we're looking forward to a hotfix or patch to resolve these
same issues.

We have been on ARS 8.1 for a couple of months but just upgraded ITSM
to 8.1 (including the two patches) as of this past weekend. In
testing we ran into the Caught Exception errors that Suresh ran into,
but the ITSM patches seemed to have addressed most of those. The
problem now is basically instability. Tomcat itself keeps crashing,
so I upgraded it from patch 32 to patch 37 tonight to see if that helps.

There have also been a never-ending stream of Mid Tier issues, but of
very low intensity, from 7.6.4 on with Internet Explorer. My
understanding is that Internet Explorer has defects in it that cause
it to not correctly refresh cache, and the way the Mid Tier is
designed that becomes a big issue. However, we also have run into
issues with 7.6.4 that are worse on 8.1 with specific user's cache on
the Mid Tier becoming corrupt somehow and generating errors. The only
way to resolve those is to flush the cache on the Mid Tier, but doing
so messes up a small but vocal percentage of other people who have to
clear their IE browser cache.

So based on the suggestion below, I am planning on looking into the
Mid Tier hotfix. I'll open a ticket with BMC tomorrow if my system is
still unstable after the Tomcat upgrade and try to get that hotfix but
I have an I.T. form of PTSD because our implementation of 7.6.4 a
couple years ago was delayed a few months due to BMC support not being
helpful with Mid Tier issues (which resulted in a custom Mid Tier
patch for us, which so far hadn't been necessary on 8.1.)

So with all that said, I tried to guess the 8.1 path on the FTP site
below but couldn't find one that worked. I also tried searching their
Knowledge Base because I often find hotfixes in there, including
several that have gone in with my 8.1 install.

Thanks,

**

2014-02-04 Thread pascale . sterrett
We are now at the 3rd Hot Fix and still not getting the Caught Exception
issue resolved in our case. And it is only happening with IE9 and IE10
specific error:
Caught exception :Object doesn't support property or method
'getProxyGlobalFields'

But we are not using ITSM - we are all 100% custom apps on 7.6.04 SP5

This has been going on since November. Our only fix so far is to tell the
users to revert to IE8 until we have a solution in place. This has been
escalated to all level of engineers at BMC. Still waiting,
So any ideas at this point is more then greatly appreciated.

we are on
7.6.04 SP5
WAS8
Win2003
MSSQL2005

Thank you,

Also we had this issue a lot, I mean someone was getting it every day. We
turned off the enable persistence cache and that stopped the error from
happening.

Raavi,
With only a single exception, I have found the 'caught exception' to be either
a client or server side cache issue. Flush both and your error is likely to go
away.

Well you have to flush the mid tier cache like LJ said. Whenever I flushed
the cache it fixed the issue for me, the step I gave helped mine from
happening every day.
