Hi,

I am working on getting the new Mailman server in place for the old Listserv
that has been servicing ARSList for some time.

The switch should not be noticed much, and will occur in a few days.

If you have auto sorting of emails you might have to look into that, but
otherwise the address will be the same.

We will send a post to the normal list before we do the change.

And sorry for the misdirected email sent a minute ago...

Re: ITSM 9.0 question - can you test this? - RESOLVED

2015-11-02 Thread William Rentfrow
Guess what? I found my first ARS 9.0 base product bug.

This only applies to Oracle - I had two different people try it on SQL server
and BMC also tried it on both SQL and Oracle - SQL Server is fine, Oracle
doesn't work. The AR Server constructs bad SQL.

If you have any work flow that does something like a NOT LIKE and a field and
the field is $NULL$ the query is going to break. So this:

'Status'=1 and 'AppleSauce' NOT LIKE "%"+$STUFF$+"%"

(where $STUFF$ is null)

.will cause it to fail when querying in Oracle.

BMC registered a defect for it. Fortunately this kind of query is pretty rare.
The only time I've seen it is in the base product Decision Trees where the
screen pops up on the first branch. I devised a code workaround for it and
everything worked.

To: William Rentfrow; 'arslist@ARSLIST.ORG'
Subject: RE: ITSM 9.0 question - can you test this?

Okay so I found the problem - kind of...

The workflow that generates that SQL is the first Set Fields of active link
CFG:PDB:RefreshBranchTable_100 - here is the set fields matching condition
doing a lookup against CFG:Decision Tree Branch:

('Decision Tree ID' = $Decision Tree ID$) AND ('Main Branch' = "Yes") AND ( NOT
($z1D Action02$ LIKE (("%" + 'Branch ID') + "%"))) AND ('Status' = "Enabled")

$z1D Action02$ is $NULL$ at that point in the workflow. It is set after this
to the Entry ID of the record in the 2nd Set Fields action of the same active
link (third overall action).

Here's what the SQL generated from that looks like:

SELECT * FROM (SELECT AR_SQL_Alias$1.*, rownum as AR_RowNumber_Alias$1 FROM
(SELECT T1031.C104130, T1031.C1, T1031.C104224, T1031.C104239,
T1031.C104241 FROM T1031 WHERE ((T1031.C104215 = N'PDT0002')
AND (T1031.C104224 = 0) AND (NOT (N'%'||T1031.C1||N'%' LIKE NULL)) AND

ASC) AR_SQL_Alias$1) WHERE ((AR_RowNumber_Alias$1 > 0) AND
(AR_RowNumber_Alias$1 < 3))

In our dev environment I created an overlay on that Active Link I changed the
"Set Fields" match condition to this:

('Decision Tree ID' = $Decision Tree ID$) AND ('Main Branch' = "Yes") AND
('Status' = "Enabled")

and it works. So that whole C1 NOT LIKE NULL thing is what is causing
this. I am 100% sure that is the root cause.

I just have no idea what this is actually saying from the above SQL.

AND (NOT (N'%'||T1031.C1||N'%' LIKE NULL))

Subject: ITSM 9.0 question - can you test this?

Hello listers -

We've run into an interesting issue. In IM 9.0 we can select New Incident,
then fill out a caller's information.

The we select the decision tree link/button and it opens the trees.

Then when we select one it should open the branch window. It opens an empty
window.

In ITSM 8.1 it works - and it's all the same base product code. If you happen
to have ITSM 9 and a couple of seconds to spare can you try this?

Also for fun I compared the SQL and ARS 9 has a bunch of stuff I don't get -
like random "N"'s in the SQL

Older working server query:

SELECT * FROM ( SELECT
T1031.C1,C104224,C104241,C104130,C104239 FROM T1031 WHERE
((T1031.C104215 = 'PDT0002') AND (T1031.C104224 = 0) AND NOT
((' ' LIKE (('%' || T1031.C1) || '%'))) AND (T1031.C7 = 1)) ORDER BY
C104215 ASC,C100244 ASC, 1 ASC ) WHERE ROWNUM <= 2

New-fangled what is this stuff query:

Re: ITSM 9.0 question - can you test this? - RESOLVED

2015-11-02 Thread William Rentfrow
I'm not sure - it worked in the previous version of ARS (8.1) but not in 9.

The actual workflow qualification was this, and $z1d Action02$ was null when
this ran:

('Decision Tree ID' = $Decision Tree ID$) AND ('Main Branch' = "Yes") AND ( NOT
($z1D Action02$ LIKE (("%" + 'Branch ID') + "%"))) AND ('Status' = "Enabled")

Decision trees are kind of unique in the app - most of the time dialog windows
open up for people to do things like associate a People record to a group or
stuff like that. In decision trees the window is re-used and refreshed several
times. $z1D Action02$ is a display only hidden field that ends up holding the
Branch ID of the current branch - but the first time time through it is null
and fails and the window closes.

I am pretty sure this is going to end up being DB-platform specific. We are on
Oracle 11g RAC.

I did this advanced search against CFG:Decision Tree Branch:

NOT ('Branch ID') LIKE $NULL$

It returns zero results. Apparently you can't do a NOT LIKE NULL on our DB
platform and have it work.

This doesn't work either, which is what is much closer to the SQL issued:

NOT ("%"+'Branch ID'+"%") LIKE $NULL$

This works just fine:

'Branch ID' != $NULL$

Obviously an overlay + fix on the Set Fields qual should fix this permanently.

AND (T1031.C104224 = 0) AND (NOT (N'%'||T1031.C1||N'%' LIKE NULL)) AND
(T1031.C7 = 1)) ORDER BY T1031.C104215 ASC, T1031.C100244 ASC, T1031.C1

ITSM 9.0 question - can you test this?

2015-10-26 Thread William Rentfrow

T1031.C1,C104224,C104241,C104130,C104239 FROM T1031 WHERE
((T1031.C104215 = 'PDT0002') AND (T1031.C104224 = 0) AND NOT
((' ' LIKE (('%' || T1031.C1) || '%'))) AND (T1031.C7 = 1)) ORDER BY
C104215 ASC,C100244 ASC, 1 ASC ) WHERE ROWNUM <= 2

New-fangled what is this stuff query:

SELECT * FROM (SELECT AR_SQL_Alias1 FROM (SELECT T1031.C1, T1031.C104239,
T1031.C104130, T1031.C104241, T1031.C104224 FROM T1031 WHERE
((T1031.C104215 = N'PDT0002') AND (T1031.C104224 = 0) AND (NOT
(N'%'||T1031.C1||N'%' LIKE NULL)) AND (T1031.C7 = 1)) ORDER BY
T1031.C104215 ASC, T1031.C100244 ASC, T1031.C1 ASC) AR_SQL_Alias1 > 0)
AND (AR_RowNumber_Alias$1 < 3))

Maybe it comes down to the purpose of the group. ARS list has traditionally
focused on helping each other with issues related to the ARS system and related
utility apps.

When folks cross into asking for consultancy-centric topics, I'm not surprised
when it comes to silence. I myself have drifted into that grey area in the
past and was never taken back at silence as a response.

When I was at my last job I did an upgrade of Remedy/ITSM from 7.5 to 8.1
and I built out my upgrade doc specific to that environment with server
names/ip's, screen shots, pitfalls (as I came across them), etcif I
still had access to the document I would be hesitant to share, not because
I'm being protective of my own 'consultancy' (is that really a word?
:)but because it was so filled with details about the implementation,
the customizations made in that environment, etc, that I'm not sure it
would have been of much use to anyone other than the one site I built it
forbut that is a personal opinion...YMMV.

Well I guess some knowledge is open for sharing and some is not. I for one am
secure enough in my skills and experience to not be threatned by another
consultant in any area. There is allways someone out there that knows more than
you and someone else that knows less. I think by sharing we move the whole
thing forward but that just me..

#yiv2787123608 Hi Jason,I think you have hit the nail on
the head, if we supply our IP we have no value anymore.
The other thing to note is that these take time to produce
so why would someone just give them away, that is
professional suicide.  Many of the partner companies make a
living out of having teams for testing with their own test
cases (large teams), again these take time to develop and
tweak to get correct so why would they give these away for
free where there is a business for them?  AMIGO was the BMC Professional
Services upgrade program, so why would they give away their
IP for free?  The older 7.1 Guides actually had
unit tests in them that could form the basis of testing,
however it is not difficult to formulate a plan as the tests
 are very generic in nature.

Thanks Tom,

I was at BMC:Engage for our thanksgiving and they served no turkey (all things
considered that was a good thing) :)

A fun bit of trivia is looking up why the Canadian Thanksgiving and US
Thanksgiving dates are different and the origins.

Far more interesting and murky than you might think. I always thought as a
harvest festival it made sense the US was later than Canada, not the reason.

I don’t have the space or time to try and explain it here …. Or even why the
holidays exists at all ….

Yep - I've looked at the files attached to KA404409 (and the other related
AMIGO pages) and there is nothing that looks like a post-upgrade test-plan
that could be used to UAT the out-of-the-box ITSM -- a test plan that
exercises the out-of-the-box modules to validate out-of-the-box
functionality.

Perhaps BMC took it down for some reason...

Re: Remedy Test Plan

2014-11-25 Thread Rick Cook
Well, those that have would not likely be able to share those documents,
because they would be the proprietary property of either their consulting
agency or the client.

That being said, a generic plan would simply be to test the processes that
the ITSM products use. Set up some configuration data, to be sure that the
back-end forms are populated. Set up a simple approval process, and be
sure that you test that it works. Create a record via email, and test that
outgoing ones work, too. Any plug-in (like LDAP or WS) that you use should
be tested. Anything that runs as a separate daemon or service should be
tested. Be sure that you can access the CMDB from both the Atrium console
and from ITSM.

It's not rocket surgery.

Re: Remedy Test Plan

2014-11-25 Thread Jason Miller
I agree consultants have them. But I think the rub there is the
consultants use those to make a living. There have been a number of times
I have talked to people/partners/BMC Professional Services that have the
docs/process/whatever I am looking for and say we can have them for the
low, low price of tens of thousands of dollars by using their services.

Testing an upgrade /install

1. Core functionality of the server and related services
2. Validate and test Foundation elements and supporting data
3. Use User guides to test base functionality of each ITSM application
4. Test all Integration's within ITSM and outside (LDAP, SSO etc)
5, Provide key users access to test their day to day processes
6. Stress/ Performance testing ( can't tell you how many times this one has

Well, those that have would not likely be able to share those documents,

That being said, a generic plan would simply be to test the processes that
the ITSM products use. Set up some configuration data, to be sure that the
back-end forms are populated. Set up a simple approval process, and be
sure that you test that it works. Create a record via email, and test that
outgoing ones work, too. Any plug-in (like LDAP or WS) that you use should
be tested. Anything that runs as a separate daemon or service should be
tested. Be sure that you can access the CMDB from both the Atrium console
 and from ITSM.

 It's not rocket surgery.

2014-11-25 Thread Scott Hallenger
ITSM 7.1 is the same everywhere (until its customized of course). So it stands
to reason that there are 1000s of test docs out there that match up directly to
itsm 7 OOB. Its an old unsupported system now, no need to keep those docs so
close to the chest.

Post upgrade/instasll test plan needed

2014-11-20 Thread Scott Hallenger
Hi I was wondering if anyone might have a post ITSM install/upgrade test plan
laying around that thay would be willing to share. Ideally a plan for 7.1 woud
be great but 7.x woul be OK as well. I can even extrapolate somthing out of an
8.x plan. Pretty much any version is better than nothing.. Thanks fot your help
in advance, and I hope this post makes it up to the board given the issues I
have had lately.

8.1.02 upgrade test...Sybase-Server-Name:

2014-10-27 Thread Rick Phillips

Hi,

We're doing our own test of the upgrade installers (seems there's alot
of that going on). I have a copy of the prod db and a copy of the prod
app server (vm) in my dev environment, and have updated all the server
references in the new app server vm (i.e., ar.cfg, armonitor.cfg, and
registry, among others). When I got ready to update the server refs in
the db, I couldn't get ARS to start, and there were errors like this in
the arerror.log:

/[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or
access denied. (SQL Server 17)//
//SQL database is still not available -- continuing to attempt
connection (ARNOTE 591)//

//The SQL database operation failed. (ARERR 552)/

I was able to log into the db via SQL Management Studio with the ARAdmin
account, and successfully execute a select statement against user_x, so
I contacted the dba who suggested trying to create an ODBC connection
just to test the connection to the db. He said to ensure that the
server name was defined as myserver, port, which connected fine. At
that point I went back to the ar.cfg and armonitor for the umpteenth
time, and a colleague suggested adding the port number to the
Sybase-Server-Name parameter, so that the line in the ar.cfg looked like
Sybase-Server-Name: myserver,1234

The server started right up, no errors in the error.log, so my question is:

None of the other servers in any of our environments needed the port
added, the old dev server didn't need it (and I'm told that that vm is
turned off), and I don't recall ever seeing a port id in the
Sybase-Server-Name: line.

Any idea, why the ar.cfg needs it now?

Thanks,

rp

Minimum requirements to build out a test 8.1 ITSM

2014-03-03 Thread Richter, Howard (CEI - Atlanta)
Good morning/afternoon/evening all,

I hope you had a good weekend.

Ok, I am about to order a couple of VMs to build out a test ITSM 8.1
environment and just wanted to verify that this configuration would work.

1. DB server (running win 2008 and MSSQL 2008) 4 gig, dual processor, 250
gig

2. Remedy/ITSM/SRM/Mid-tier, win 2008, 8 gig, quad processor, 500 gig.

Let me know if this will work. Also I might want to try MyIT, but I would
assume that I will need an extra server for that.

As always, thanks

Howard

Re: Minimum requirements to build out a test 8.1 ITSM

2014-03-03 Thread Jason Miller
That should be pretty comfortable for a few users. Is this environment
mostly for your team? If you expect users to be evaluating the system you
may want to beef things up a little so they have a better experience. If
it is for you to try things out and get familiar it should work.

If you are going to be doing work with CMDB and a decent number of CIs then
I would say increase the DB ram to 8 GB at least and probably add some more
app server memory.

I haven't looked at the latest version of MyIT but based on my experience
with 1.5 you probably would be ok running in on you app server for light
usage. If getting an additional server isn't too hard maybe get another
server for the web tier where you can put Mid Tier and MyIT. MyIT will use
Tomcat and also have a virgo service (http://www.eclipse.org/virgo). By
default MyIT wants to install Tomcat if I remember correctly but I have
used the same TC with MT and MyIT.

Re: Minimum requirements to build out a test 8.1 ITSM

2014-03-03 Thread Carl Wilson
Hi Howard,

If this is for a UAT / Production system, then the recommendation is to have
12-16GB RAM for the AR Application Servers (due to the number of additional
Plugin's with 8.x.x versions).

The below would work for a Test/Demo system, however be aware that 2GB RAM
would be allocated to the MT on these systems so if you could add some more
RAM then this would be beneficial.
