[AsburyPark] Re: Gumba

2006-11-13 Thread 2fine4u
I'm cracking up at both of you! This is getting nuttier by the
minute! There is nothing wrong in being Italo-American! Some of my
best friends are! Sigh! This is America! Let those who want to
celbrate, do so. I love Italian People. They have such a rich
history and heritage. Tommy says that Italians were/are the
indigenous people of AP. Don't know it this is true because I
thought I read somewhere, that it was a Methodist Community; for
whites, only, that Blacks lived on the West-Side in huts, etc. That
Bradley was a pure bigot, while professing to be a Christian. Sound
familiar? Don't know what brand of christianity those people were
practicing, but it's not the one I know. I am a Roman Catholic, born
in the mid-forties, was raised in a predominantly Catholic City,
southern, segregated, unequal, etc. I had parents who owned a
business, my father was a WWII veteran, who fought under Gen. Almond
and Clark in the Italian mountains, saved and fed Italians, yet he
had to travel in a train car, behind the Nazis, he captured. My
father fought for democracy in Europe, while being denied it, here!
He was in the 371st, 92nd Division, Buffalo Soldiers, from Ft.
Huachuca, AZ, after Basic training, at Ft. Dix, NJ. I have been
asked by the Department of the Army, for copies of my father's
memorabilia, from a scrapbook, my mother fashioned, while she was
carrying me. The information, was given to me when my father died,
back in 1980. I am a proud, African-American and Woman of Color.
Where I come from, I am called Creole, from my French, Indian and
African Descendants, because there was no classification, for people
like me. No one could be as proud as I am. Tommy is proud of his
heritage and I respect him, for it. I hope AP continues, to have the
Columbus Landing. I respect and love all of you, that are in this
group, right or wrong.

I guess we both ruined ours.

You made clear before Gumba that you were on the Keady side of the
 Columbus holiday.

Yet in your letter you brought up the defense of the controversy
as
if it were needed. That wasn't a swipe at me? You made fun of the
costumes (as you do again). You talked of the rioting in OT. Not a
swipe at me from the prior posts? Don't answer - I know it was.

I would have left you out of mine if you had left me out of yours.

As for my kids dressing as Indians, that's to honor them, just as
the Order of the Arrow does.

What if we all did it your way and never dressed in Indian garb
again. That way, no one would remember what their culture looked
 like.

While were at it, let's make sure the Order of the Arrow doesn't
perform their dances in public, so everyone can forget that too.

While we are at it, let's not honor them with sport team names -
we
really do need to get all reference and symbolism of them out of
our
 lives.

In fact, lets change the names of places from Wannamassa to Ohio,
so
 we can forget them completely.

On second thought, I'm going to disagree with you Dan. Indian
culture seems worth remembering and honoring to me. I'll still
dress my kids as Indians on Columbus day (Thanksgiving too) so I
can
make sure the gerneration I'm raising never forgets them, and they
can pass it along to subsequent generations.

On Martin Luther King day I sit my kids down and read to them
parts
of his writings. You ever done that?

For your other suggestion of what I can do with my kids, you can
go
to Hell. Go directly to Hell. Do not pass go, and do not collect
 $200.00.

Nice story. What does this or the other post have to do with AP?
Are you being patriotic? What have you done for a Veteran today?
Did you know that the Bush Administration, does all it can, to DE-
fund the Veterans? Have you read how the Vets down at Bethesda and
Walter Reed, have to PAY for their own expenses? Do you know how
much the American Legion and the VFW GIVE, to our veterans? Nice PR
and platitudes, Bush does when the cameras are turned on, but he
himself, has a checkered military record, which despite the secrecy
surrounding his OWN so-called duty, he's criticized Max Leland a
disabled Viet-Nam Veteran and has Christopher Smith, a NJ Republican,
taken OFF, as Chairman of Veterans Affairs and replaced by someone,
who will tow the Republican line, of Never serving and screwing
Veterans as much as they can get away with! Just some remarks from
the Chairman of Veterans Affairs for my organization. We never stop
helping or giving to our veterans. The State of NJ has just ended
our annual USO Holiday Drive, for Ft Dix and Maguire, as well as the
USO at the Philadelphia Int'l Airport. We also have had our second
annual Toys for the Deployed. We collect toys to be given to
children of the deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan for Make a
Difference Day. My Post has purchased 2000 Poppies for our annual
Memorial Day Drive to collect donations for the Veterans at Menlo
Park, Lyons and Veterans Haven, in Cumberland County, NJ. Did you
know that my Unit purchased a new bed last year, for a homeless
veteran, or that we purchased 30 motorized scooters, for disabled
veterans? This year we are purchasing 15 lounge chairs, to replace
the beaten up ones? It takes money to do these things, from the
meager donations, that most vets don't have. If you want to do
something for a veteran, you can contact me. Not asking, but we have
REAL issues going on, where veterans are concerned. 1 in 3 homeless
men, are veterans. Honor a vet, wear a poppy this year, during the
month of May. I plan on providing our City Council with them, this
year. John Loffredo, Ed Johnson, Mr. Bruno, Jim Keady and many other
concerned citizens, are always at the monument, on 5th Ave., when I
come with my Navy, Veteran husband, who is also retired from the
Army National Guard, to place our wreath and give memorial words to
the Catholic, Jewish, American Legion and the VFW, DAV and any other
veteran group that is there. You'll never see me critize those, that
honor our Vets! Thanks Jim, for all you do, to make sure Flags are
flying proper and respectful. Our colors don't RUN!

Thank You Sharon that means alot to me the Library Flag Pole is being fix the
cleat was just to low is going to be rasied. The Rope Flags was being taken in
past the Library did contact the VFW awhile back but they never got back in
touch with them.We have a new Chain of Command know things are differant we had
a pretty good turn out for Veterans Day the best one in awhile e SSG Craft is
doing better rasing 2 daughters on his own in case anyone is interested.March
11,2005 this town rock.It a real shame a solider has to get wounded to get some
Peace in this town.Everybody got along

Sorry I miss yours Veterans Day Sharon.

Some people take there FREEDOM for granted nothing good comes from a War
accept a lesson.People come back damage in alot differant ways then forgotten
about I see them around Asbury Park elsewhere thats when in come in to
help!!Tommy means well he came knocking on my door one day for a dinner tickets
for Jimmy's because what I do in town for the Veterans what everybody needs to
do is work together so we can get this town back on its feet.I known I going to
try my best to ignore the trouble makers just Move On in life. Sharon you
have a HEART of GOLD care alot about people it is a Honor to known You.Lets
not forget the Police Dep. Fire Dep. they have a thankless job until something
bad happens to one of them. That flying on our Waterfront is also for them just
like everyone else here. They also are willing to give there life with the job
they do.Just like Veteran.Garrett Gilberson Jr. I Apoloize if I get upset
with you your family in anyway.I take enough medicine from the the Veterans
Hospital to control my seizures with bad side effects. But me the Deputy Mayor
should be handled between us anyway I sorry. This Fire Dep. in town safe my life
several times with seizures sometimes what I have gets the best of me. I have
nothing to hide I speak the truth. My main concern is our Colors the Veterans

[AsburyPark] Recreation in today's APP

2006-11-13 Thread oakdorf
ASBURY PARK †A new city recreation program is getting under way this
month, with offerings in swimming, basketball, bowling, wrestling,
tennis and hair braiding, in the most organized effort that city hall
has made for its young people in decades.

Most of the programs run for 15 weeks.

Note, in the article, a city resident comments on the violence in
the the city.

Finally a rec program. They should use some of those affordable
housing $ (that must be sitting somehwere) to fix the little league
field. Pretty soon, there should be some more payments into the fund.
What is the balance of fund???

He genuinely WANT to help those who either can't help themselves for

City Council. One was born here and the other, I still consider new,
but I only have one voice. This is a Black town, run by whites, as
usual. If this is still America, I'm entitled to my opinion, under
the 1st Amendment. Flame if you wish, because at this point, I
really don't give a rat's you know what! New people, with New money
want to move in, know every reason why Asbury is in trouble, want it
THEIR way, never what's good for the good of all, the ocean-front, is
being developed, while the underlying reasons the West Side STILL

 Asbury Park's lightning rod
Posted by the _Asbury Park Press_ (http://www.app.com/) on
11/12/06
If Asbury Park Councilman James Keady were being graded on his
ability to
alienate people, he'd be doing A work this marking period.

First, he irritated fellow council members by joining union
workers
protesting the use of nonunion workers in some of the beachfront
redevelopment
projects. Two weeks ago, following the fatal shooting of 18-year-
old Tylik Pugh, he
told a New York City television station that Asbury Park was home
to 200
members of the Bloods gang †a comment that prompted the city's
Urban Enterprise
Zone board of directors to ask him to resign his council seat
and, for good
 measure, to leave town.

Now, he has incurred the wrath of the city school board for
touring Asbury
Park High and meeting with students there without getting
permission from the
acting superintendent. Keady says his visit was blessed by the
building
 principal.

The issue here shouldn't be Keady, but trying to solve the
problems Keady
has demonstrated he is concerned enough about to reach out
directly to the kids
in the community. He should be applauded for taking the initiative
to try to
better understand the city's youth and the dynamics of youth
violence.
Instead of sending out letters criticizing him, the school board
should be
encouraging every other council member and community leader to
follow his lead.

Keady says he obtained valuable information from the students. I
thought,
and still do think, that the solutions lie with them, he said. So
do we.
Community leaders need to engage those students, as well as their
parents and
guardians, in an ongoing conversation. That will be much easier to
do if the
council and school board can do a better job of conversing amongst
themselves.

So what was Francis Ford Coppola, doing? He's Italian and this was
one in a series of Godfather Films, right? Why did you insert Step

You've been carefully taught, huh?

Dear Asbury Park UEZ and Paramount Theater,

As you may know I have been a proponent of ridding our nation of
the
last socially acceptable stereotype in Hollywood: The caricature of
the Italian-American as either a conniving, cold killer who runs
organized crime, or a grammatically-challenged dimwit who works for
the guy who runs organized crime.

Prior to the movie The Godfather, Hollywood was balanced in their
portrayal of mobsters in various ethnicities. Pretty Boy Floyd,
Baby Face Nelson, Dutch Shultz, Bonnie and Clyde, Meyer Lansky and
Bugsy Segal were all in movies, and none were Italian (they were
also real people, unlike Vito Corleone or Tony Soprano).

Since the move The Godfather, more than 400 feature length films
have been made where mobsters are just Italian. That list grows,
and it doesn't include the larger number of TV show, radio and
 commercial Italian false caricatures.

I note the UEZ passed along an advertisement by Paramount Theater
for Gumba Night. I hoped it had something to do with Gumby or
Chicken Gumbo. I was saddened to find it was a misspelling of the
word Goombah and used to describe a night of double feature
Godfather movies (although I was happy to see that someone other
than an Italian at Paramount Theater had proved the universality of
 the struggle with grammar).

Goombah to Italians originally meant friend (although I must say,
it's rarely ever used. I've never walked into Jimmy's Restaurant
and yelled Hey Goombah!). However, it's in far more prevalent use
today as a slur (even among Italians), conjuring up the stereotype
 described above.

I know I am a long way from convincing people to frown on the
showing of The Godfather as they would today frown upon the showing
of the once popular Steppin' Fetchit movies (but I'm working on
it).
Accordingly, I will not ask that Paramount not show it or the UEZ
 not promote it.

However, Goombah Night is objectionable by today's standards. It
sounds like an event. I attend prideful events like the Italian
American Festival, Italian American Heritage Festival and the
 Columbus Landing.

How am I expected to attend a Goombah event? Shall I appear
casually in my velour running suit, zipper pulled down to the top
of
my beer belly exposing my gold chains and just enough sprinkling of
powdered sugar in my chest hair to confirm I've eaten my 6th
sfogliatelle of the day? Or should I come retro in trench coat,
tilted fedora and violin case? If that image is too scary, I'll
just put on my vest, grind my organ and let my monkey dance for
 quarters.

I know the UEZ has received an objection from another Italian
American gentleman, and I'm fully aware that much of his was
intended as a sarcastic swipe at me for my recent strong
disapproval
of Councilman Keady's attack on Columbus Day and our heritage.

That gentleman was not insulted by what Mr. Keady did and his
insinuation that Italians needed a defense against Keady in his
recent communiqué is disingenuous. He makes fun of that tradition
and the costumes worn at the Columbus Landing, costumes worn by
several of my family members over the years. His recent
communication is in furtherance of the Keady-inspired attack by
outsiders on the Asbury Park heritage and traditions held so dear
by
 our indigenous people.

His sarcasm is an attempt to insult me despite knowing how offended
I was by Mr. Keady's actions. I doubt he'd be so cruel toward
another ethnicity, which confirms how vigorously I must defend the
Italian American reputation. If, Heaven forbid, that same gentleman
should ever find his fate in the hands of 12 jurors who think Tony
Soprano is a peek at the Italian Genome, he will wish he had taken
 these matters more seriously too.

I am further aware that this individual's true intent is to see me,
a City supporter, oppose the City on any issue as he often does,
since he is a City non-supporter. I'll grant him this one wish.

I must first highlight a difference. My point has always been that
Hollywood's bigoted Italian caricature is so prolific that it
infects the psyche of America, so that most people will not
recognize something like the word Goombah as a slur when in fact
it is. The slur is masked so that people using it do not realize
the
slur, as was the case here with Paramount and the UEZ.

On the other hand, Councilman Keady's attack on our Columbus Day
tradition comes from him after he studied the

[AsburyPark] Asbury Music Awards

2006-11-13 Thread Hinge
ASBURY PARK — From avant-gardists to roots rockers, from up-and-comers to scene
veterans, New Jersey's finest flocked to The Stone Pony in full force and full
form Saturday
night for the 14th annual Asbury Music Awards.

Co-founded by Scott Stamper and Adam Weisberg, co-owners of The Saint
nightclub, the
Asbury Music Awards aims to showcase the broad scope of original musical talent
forged
at the Jersey Shore.

Master of ceremonies Barry Penetrator, frontman for punk-dub powerhouse Barry
and The
Penetrators, kicked off the evening with a rousing rallying call for all his
rock 'n' roll
cohorts.

Best on the East Coast

The Jersey Shore is the best music scene on the East Coast, hands down, said
Penetrator.
Shows like this give the new bands something to strive for. That's why we need
to keep
coming out and keep showing our support.

Performers for the evening included Woodfish, who were named Top Groove Band;
Top
Acoustic Act nominees Rachel Zamsteen, Phil Benson and Keith Kenny; Top Heavy
Rock Act
winner Twine, and indie-synth quartet A Love Like Pi, who were up for an award
in the Top
Young Band category.

The only breaks I've got in this business, I got through this place. I owe it
all to Asbury
Park, said Benson, 24, of Hazlet.

Also performing sets were '05 Asbury Music Awards favorites April Smith, Rick
Barry and
Matt O'Ree, all of whom garnered nominations at this year's ceremony.

Newcomers Status Green took home honors in several categories, including Top
Male
Vocalist (Lou Montesano), Top Live Performance and Top Pop Band, for which the
Howell
pop-rock foursome vied against such Garden State mainstays as the New Brunswick
psychedelic/power-pop outfit The Anderson Council and Eatontown
singer/songwriter Bob
Burger.

The event also included nods for Top Radio Station and Top News Publication in
Support
of Live Music, a Musician Lifetime Achievement Award and a reading by Poet
Laureate
nominee Nicole Homer.

In the future, I would love to see this get the attention of more people in
the industry,
said Weisberg.

If we could use platforms like the Asbury Music Awards to help get more of our
local
bands signed, then I'll feel like we'd have done what we set out to do.

For a complete list of winners, visit the The Saint's Web site at
www.thesaintnj.com.

[AsburyPark] We need Thor Equities

2006-11-13 Thread dfsavgny
A $1.5 Billion Vision For Coney Island
BY DAVID LOMBINO - Staff Reporter of the Sun
November 13, 2006
URL: http://www.nysun.com/article/43372

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

Even on a bright fall day, the streets that make up Coney Island's
amusement district seem worn and tired, more tumbleweeds than
tourists. While the area boasts an original circus-like charm, born
of colorful characters who congregate there, even old-timers agree
it needs a major facelift.

The founder of the nonprofit Coney Island USA, Richard Zigun, blames
the area's decay on a handful of property owners who were wealthy
enough to sit on their property for 20 or 30 years and wait.

They did not give a damn about the amusement industry, Mr. Zigun
said.

But the city's prolonged real estate boom is reaching Brooklyn's
southern edge, and over the past two or three years, dozens of
parcels in the amusement district have changed hands, opening up the
possibility for new development.

This is the best shot Coney Island has had in 50 years, he
said. Hopefully, we will get something fantastic, something world-
class.

The biggest buyer is developer Joseph Sitt of Thor Equities. He has
spent more than $100 million to assemble more than a dozen
balkanized parcels along the boardwalk, close to the subway station.

Thor wants to spend $1.5 billion to restore the amusement district
to its former glory, transforming it from a place to spend a summer
afternoon into a year-round destination, and giving it the feel of
Las Vegas, Orlando, or Atlantic City.

New designs drawn up by the architectural firm Ehrenkrantz Eckstut
Kuhn depict Thor's futuristic vision. A new roller coaster would
dart in and out of new buildings along Stillwell Avenue, the first
roller coaster in New York City since the Cyclone opened in 1927,
according to the developer. Opposite the subway station, Thor is
planning a vertical ride to the top of a 150-foot-high water tower
that would be decorated with flickering holograms of whales and
mermaids.

Where Stillwell Avenue meets the boardwalk, the developer wants to
build a giant indoor water park and a three-story, glass-enclosed
carousel. All the rides would be winterized. They would also be
integrated with a movie theater, arcades, retail stores, and with
existing attractions, like the Cyclone, the Wonder Wheel, and the
Parachute Drop. Thor Equities would lease out the rides or find an
operating partner to run the amusements.

The plan has a catch. Thor says it needs the city to enact a zoning
change to allow residential and hotel development in the amusement
district. Thor wants to build as many as four towers on its site,
comprising two hotels, a time-share, and an apartment building that
could rise up to 40 stories.

In the early 1970s, in an attempt to save the amusements, the city
rezoned the area to forbid residential development, which it said
threatened to chase the rides, games, and shows out of town. Now the
developer is arguing that the profit from the residential
development is the way to fund the area's regeneration.

A spokesman for Thor Equities, Lee Silberstein, said, The problem
with amusements is that they don't make money. There is a reason why
people stopped building them. They are too expensive and too
seasonal. That is part of the reason why we want to do residential.

Currently, Coney Island attracts visitors for about five months a
year, from April to mid-September. To be profitable, the amusements
would need to operate year-round. The developer hopes the apartments
and hotels will enliven the area and make it safer with a permanent
human presence.

The city is working on rezoning and design recommendations.
Following additional public outreach, it hopes to put a plan through
the land use review process next year. The developer is planning to
prepare the 10-acre site for construction and they hope to open in
2010 or 2011. Some of the amusement operators in the Thor
development footprint were forced to close up shop this year, and
others will stay open for one more summer season.

Mr. Zigun, who also sits on the board of the city's Coney Island
Development Corporation, said hotels would be a welcome addition,
but said he is dead set against condominiums in the heart of the
amusement district. He said he's not looking for a fight, but a
polite, intelligent discussion.

Mr. Zigun, who has tattoos poking out from under his jacket sleeves,
said Coney Island is best preserved for those with money who want
to get drunk, stay out late, tendencies, he said, that only a non-
resident would have.

Put the loud places here, the things that don't belong in other
neighborhoods, Mr. Zigun said.

While some critics have said Thor's designs are too glitzy, Mr.
Zigun envisions something like Las Vegas, Miami Beach, Orlando,
Fla., and Atlantic City, N.J., jazzy, modern, and fantastical, as
opposed to a suburban glass façade, or an

I think it's sad that the redevelopment is only happening on the east
side of AP.
There are some pretty dismal areas on the west side, and in my opinion
living in a bad looking neighborhood only makes things worse.
Has there ever been any plans in AP to go places like Springwood and
do some development there?

Based on that information it's easy for me to agree with BOE members who

here shouldn't be Keady, but trying to solve the problems Keady has
demonstrated he is concerned enough about to reach out directly to the kids
in the community. He should be applauded for taking the initiative to try to
better understand the city's youth and the dynamics of youth violence.
Instead of sending out letters criticizing him, the school board should be
encouraging every other council member and community leader to follow his

[AsburyPark] Target Stores

2006-11-13 Thread dfsavgny
I don't know if this is true, but an email containing ALL of the
following was forwarded to me. Go get them Tommy (if true).

Wasn't it last Christmas that Target refused to let the Salvation
Army ring their bells in front of their stores?

Dick Forrey of the Vietnam Veterans Association wrote.

Recently we asked the local TARGET store to be a proud sponsor of
the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall during our spring recognition
event.

We received the following reply from the local TARGET management:
Veterans do not meet our area of giving. We only donate to the
arts, social action groups, gay lesbian causes, and education.

So I'm thinking, if the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and veterans
in general, do not meet their donation criteria, then something is
really wrong at this TARGET store. We were not asking for thousands
of dollars, not even hundreds, just a small sponsorship for a
memorial remembrance.

As a follow-up, I E-mailed the TARGET U.S. Corporate Headquarters
and their response was the same. That's their national policy.

Then I looked into the company further. They will not allow the
Marines to collect for 'Toys for Tots' at any of their stores. And
during the recent Iraq deployment, they would not allow families of
employees wh o were called up for active duty to continue their
insurance coverage while they were on military service. Then as I
dig further, TARGET is a French-owned corporation .

Answer the call - Time to BOYCOTT ALL TARGET STORES

Now, I'm thinking again. If TARGET cannot support American Veterans,
then why should my family and I support their stores by spending our
hard earned American dollars! And, have their profits sent to France.

Without the American Vets, where would France be today?

They, most likely would be speaking German and trading in Deutsch
Marks

 Sincerely,
 Dick Forrey

Please send this on to everyone you know to let Target know we
dont
need them either !

It is also obvious that someone who was cc'd (which included BOE

Nice try. I mocked Keady, and plan to do so again, for saying that
the shooting wasn't criminal, and for making excuses for the
shooter. A lack of basketball is not why that teenager got shot.

Shooting someone in the face is over the top. All the recreation in
the world won't help that sicko.

Recreation is good in and of itself, unrelated to some psychobabble
social justice scheme. Good exercise and fun. I have no problem with
rec; I'm actively doing something for rec here in AP. I would never
use a shooting as an opportunity to ask for money for my pet
project, like you know who did. That was disgraceful.

Here is my post. Didn't say anything close to what you say I said.

Save you some time in searching...

I have nothing against Basketball itself (except midnight basketball
which puts the kids on the street at midnight).

You'll find me criticising JK for bringing up basketball as an
immediate response to the shootings, particularly when he lobbied to
divert money from police to his basketball program.

That was shortsighted and shamefully opportunistic.

[AsburyPark] Proof or Retraction Mr. DeSeno

2006-11-13 Thread Jim Keady

Nice try. I mocked Keady, and plan to do so again,
for saying that the shooting wasn't criminal

Mr. DeSeno,

Your above statement is a lie. I NEVER said that the
shooting was not criminal. Provide clear evidence of me making this
statement VERBATIM or retract your comment. You are twisting words and insinuating
meaning in a libelous fashion.

For the benefit of others on this list, I have included the
entire article in question below. The comments that Mr. DeSeno is
referencing are as follows.

Earlier
in the week City Councilman James Keady said the shootings are not just a criminal problem but stem from
social issues. (emphasis mine) The roots of the problem are not
criminal, theyre social, he said. One of the underpinning
issues is poverty as well as a sense of hopelessness among young
African-American men in the city.

Mr.
DeSeno, again, you are lying and I expect either proof to the contrary or a
retraction of your statement.

Peace, James W. Keady

THE
COASTER

The city
of Asbury Park is reeling from several shootings in four days, one leaving a
teenager on life support at press time.

The
shootings, two of which took place during the day, all occurred within a
two-block radius near the Asbury Park Middle School and Bangs Avenue Elementary
School.

In the
most recent shooting Tylek Pugh, 18, was shot in the head at the corner of
Summerfield and Prospect Avenues at about 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Board of
Education President Robert DiSanto said all public schools in the district
would be closed today (Oct. 19).

We
are very concerned about our students; that is our primary concern, he
said. We need to work closer with the police and in that area. It has
happened too many times in that area.

Police
Inspector Christopher Van Buren was at the scene Wednesday afternoon and said
Pugh did not live in the neighborhood where he was shot, but was from the
general area.

Van Buren
said he knew Pugh, but did not know if he had prior arrests.

I
know who he is, said Van Buren.

The
inspector said he could not confirm that the shooting was gang related, but
said, Our guys are looking into it now.

The
shooting occurred within one block of the Middle School on Bangs Avenue.
Several police cars and officers were in the area at the time of the
schools dismissal, but Van Buren said students left the school without
incident.

There
were no problems, he said.

Two
residents at the scene said they did not see anything and a man
sitting on a porch outside the house on Prospect Avenue where the shooting took
place, said he did not want to comment as he strummed his guitar with his dog
nearby.

Fire
Official Garrett Giberson said the fire department responded to a call at 11:20
a.m. from the county 911 and Asbury Park Police Department that a man had been
shot.

They went
to Summerfield and Prospect Avenue and found the victim laying on the sidewalk
with a gunshot wound to the head.

They
administered CPR and transported the man to Jersey Shore University Medical
Center, where the trauma team was awaiting his arrival.

Giberson
said off-duty firemen were called into work to cover for those sent to the
crime scene.

Deputy
Mayor Jim Bruno said he did not know whether the shooting was gang related.

But
gangs have their own justice system and they dont help the authorities
when there are shootings, he said. The victims should help the
police but they dont and thats a big problem. They get mad and
then they get even. This is the time to act, not react. Whatever the deputy
chief thinks he needs, the council will be there to support him.

Wednesdays
shooting was at least the third and possibly the fourth since Sunday.

Asbury
Park Police and the Monmouth County Prosecutors Office are investigating two
shootings which occurred in the city on Sunday, as well as reports of another
shooting which took place Tuesday.

The first
of the shootings occurred about 1 p.m. on Sunday on the 400 block of Comstock
Street. Jahmere Crooms, 18, was shot once in the shoulder and taken to Jersey
Shore University Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. The victims
last known address was in Asbury Park.

Crooms
gave city police very few details at the time of the incident, Det./Lt. David
Kelso said. As of Wednesday, no arrests had been made in the case but the
police are following leads, he said. The motive for the shooting is unknown as
of yet.

The
second incident took place Sunday evening, as shots were fired from outside
into the home at 612 Pine Street at 7:46 pm.

One of
the rounds hit the ceiling in the home and ricocheted into the head of a
19-year-old- man who had been standing in the living room, Kelso said.

The young
man was treated on-site for non-life threatening injuries. No arrests have been
made yet, nor has a motive been determined.

A report
of shots being fired in the 1300 block of Langford Avenue at about 4 p.m.
Tuesday is still being confirmed by police, Kelso said.

The
Monmouth County

[AsburyPark] Re: Proof or Retraction Mr. DeSeno

2006-11-13 Thread asburycouple
Tom, I'm not a huge fan of Mr. Keady but based on your own post
below you are clearly and apparently intentionally taking his
statement and twisting it to suit your own agenda of attacking him.
His statement is in regard to a much broader societal issue and NOT
making the statement you claim saying that the shooting wasn't
criminal.

My past posts on this topic should demonstrate a lack of bias on
this issue. All of my posts on the recent statements Mr. Keady has
made have been critical of (in my opinion) his lack of understanding
of his role as a public servant vs. community activist. That said,
I never made stuff up. You clearly have.

I didn't think I'd be coming to Mr. Keady's defense, but somehow you
have sunk low enough to get me there. If you want to be critical of
him do so based on fact. But don't lie. You discredit everything
else you have said and your entire point of view.

JK can't escape (and neither can anyone else) that he said the cause
of the shootings was NOT CRIMINAL (nothing confusing about not
or criminal).

This wasn't an offhand remark. To further emphasize his view that
the cause here was NOT CRIMINAL, he offered what he thought was the
cause – it was caused by society.

To further emphasize that he thought the cause was NOT CRIMINAL, he
even gave a list of things society has done to this poor shooter, to
wit: Society has deprived him of recreation and a youth job.

That's what JK said. The cause of this shooting was NOT CRIMINAL,
but of different causes. You take exception to my repeating that JK
said the shootings were not criminal? Suddenly he didn't say it
just because I repeated it? That's your problem, not mine.

[Not to pull rank as a lawyer, which I always avoid here, but if the
cause was not criminal, he couldn't be convicted of a crime. I
won't hold JK or anyone else to knowing that technicality].

Let's refute JK's premise:

A lack of recreation and a youth job does not CAUSE someone to shoot
a teenager in the face. BEING A CRIMINAL causes someone to shoot a
teenager in the face. Only a fool would buy into a causation theory
between recreation and the cold-bloodedness of murder.

This isn't a time for moral equivocation. Make a value judgment.
Shooting a teenager in the face is evil and what causes one to have
the capability to do that is the heart, mind and soul of a
CRIMINAL. The CAUSE here is CRIMINAL, as opposed to NOT CRIMINAL,
like JK said.

Oh how fortunate the children are to have a shepherd such as he!
What message do the teenagers take from JK? Hey, a community
leader gave a number of excuses why the shooter did it. We
have reasons for doing it, straight from a councilman! JK will
make excuses for why we did it! Nothing like putting a little
moral equivocation into the minds of children (no way he should
lecture in the schools).

The better message, from an unwavering voice of human morality would
have been, This is a heinous act. Anyone who would shoot a
teenager in the face is a criminal (as opposed to NOT CRIMINAL) and
that person made the darkest of choices that should never, ever be
made. Furious justice and a life in prison awaits him.

Certainly not, Poor boy lacked alternatives.

Cry for JK all you want. It's nothing personal - his leadership is
dangerous, because he's been waiting his whole life to publicly
recite nice sounding platitudes, and does so even when they can
cause harm.

I don't understand why you are condemming him for pointing out a very real
problem in
Asbury Park.
Earlier in the week City Councilman James Keady said the
shootings are not just a criminal problem but stem from social
issues. The roots of the problem are not criminal, they're social,
he said.
Can you possibly deny that there is truth in this?
Let's say this was a crime of passion, which it seems to have been.
It was over a girl.
In a normal community, this would've been resolved by other forms of
fighting, but here
in Asbury Park, we have cheap guns. We have gangs. We have street justice.
That is exactly what JK was talking about.
If this were Romeo and Juliet, would it be any different. Substitute poison for
a gun.
You are putting way too much emphasis into the words rather then the reality.
Tommy, I think you are a smart guy, but what you are now doing is going to
define you to
people who don't know you, and the farther you take it, the more you are going
to suffer
the damage.

have reasons for doing it, straight from a councilman! JK will
make excuses for why we did it! Nothing like putting a little
moral equivocation into the minds of children (no way he should
  lecture in the schools).

The better message, from an unwavering voice of human morality
 would
have been, This is a heinous act. Anyone who would shoot a
teenager in the face is a criminal (as opposed to NOT CRIMINAL) and
that person made the darkest of choices that should never, ever be
made. Furious justice and a life in prison awaits him.

  Certainly not, Poor boy

Good grief.

I don't understand why you are condemming him for pointing out a
very real problem in
 Asbury Park.
Earlier in the week City Councilman James Keady said the
shootings are not just a criminal problem but stem from social
issues. The roots of the problem are not criminal, they're
social,
 he said.
Can you possibly deny that there is truth in this?
Let's say this was a crime of passion, which it seems to have
been.
 It was over a girl.
In a normal community, this would've been resolved by other
forms of fighting, but here
in Asbury Park, we have cheap guns. We have gangs. We have street
justice.
That is exactly what JK was talking about.
If this were Romeo and Juliet, would it be any different.
Substitute poison for a gun.
You are putting way too much emphasis into the words rather then
the reality.
Tommy, I think you are a smart guy, but what you are now doing is
going to define you to
people who don't know you, and the farther you take it, the more
you are going to suffer
 the damage.

overtly taking two words from the entire text and
inappropriately
spinning it to make it sound like something different than he
clearly
both said and intended. In fact, the closest anything in the
article
gets to making the statement you claim is not Jim's words (in
quotes -
you should recognize these as an attorney) but the writer's
words

A lawyer should not be this sloppy with his facts.

One of the underpinning issues is poverty as well as a sense of
hopelessness among young African-American men in the
city. It's
serious stuff, Keady said. As a community, we've really got to
begin to address the roots of these issues.

Tom, I'm not a huge fan of Mr. Keady but based on your own
post
below you are clearly and apparently intentionally taking
his
statement and twisting it to suit your own agenda of
attacking
   him.

   Nice try again.

JK can't escape (and neither can anyone else) that he said the
  cause
of the shootings was NOT CRIMINAL (nothing confusing
about not
   or criminal).

This wasn't an offhand remark. To further emphasize his view
that
the cause here was NOT CRIMINAL, he offered what he thought
was the
cause – it was caused by society.

To further emphasize that he thought the cause was NOT
CRIMINAL, he
even gave a list of things society has done to this poor
shooter,
  to
wit: Society has deprived him of recreation and a youth
job.

That's what JK said. The cause of this shooting was NOT
CRIMINAL,
but of different causes. You take exception to my repeating
that
  JK
said the shootings were not criminal? Suddenly he didn't
say it
just because I repeated it? That's your problem, not mine.

[Not to pull rank as a lawyer, which I always avoid here, but
if
  the
cause was not criminal, he couldn't be convicted of a crime.
I
won't hold JK or anyone else to knowing that technicality].

   Let's refute JK's premise:

A lack of recreation and a youth job does not CAUSE someone to
  shoot
a teenager in the face. BEING A CRIMINAL causes someone to
shoot a
teenager in the face. Only a fool would buy into a causation
theory
between recreation and the cold-bloodedness of murder.

This isn't a time for moral equivocation. Make a value
judgment.
Shooting a teenager in the face is evil and what causes one to
have
the capability to do that is the heart, mind and soul of a
CRIMINAL. The CAUSE here is CRIMINAL, as opposed to NOT
CRIMINAL,
   like JK said.

Oh how fortunate the children are to have a shepherd such as
he!
What message do the teenagers take from JK? Hey, a community

Tom is just plain wrong. It doesn't matter what you say or what facts
you show him. Despite his claims of neapolitan and sicilian ancestry I
am telling you he was stoled out of a cradle in Calabria. Thick-headed
in other words. Thank you asburycouple for it not being just us deli-
people that see his spin and distortion. Hey Tom, you should rename
your column and web site that - Spin Distortion.
