I'd love to see some politicians lead the way in finding things we can unite around. A real uniter, so to speak. I'm in total agreement with you on this - but fear the country is so polarized by absolutists who believe they are completely and totally right and anyone who doesn't agree with every aspect of their position is totally wrong. The immigration debate is a great (or bad) illustration of exactly that (just watch Lou Dobbs for a while as he clearly sees himself as the smartest man on earth). In a country who's entire system was built on compromise it seems that compromise has become a four-letter word. To me, that's scary. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] The flowers I placed at Library Square Park fountain already destroyed
Well, they lasted 2 days. It really makes me sick to think that I spent my own money and time to try and beautify the fountain a little so it doesn't look forgotten and continues to be a dumping ground for people. I now understand how the APHS must feel after they spent so much time and money on the same effort What a waste of my time. This morning, while driving by the park, I noticed that parts of the flowers that I placed there were scattered all over the fountain. I parked and went to take a look. The containers for the flowers were lying in the just cleaned up fountain. Petals everywhere, including many yards away on the path. It looks like somebody trashed them, then somebody else replaced the carcasses of the plants back in the urns. Oh, and somebody left a nice Coors Lite big assed beer can behind as a nice FU. Remember the commercial in the 70's with the Indian who had a tear running down his face because of all the litter? That was me this morning. One has to wonder what the hell our cities administration is doing when they know that this park is frequented every single night by drunks, drug dealers and prostitutes. The lighting is scarce, the police presence is zero. The cameras that everybody agrees would make a difference are nowhere to be seen. I wonder how many years it's going to take until that happens? And yes, I know there are more pressing problems to attend to, like the multiple shootings and 2 murders in the past couple of weeks. But when is somebody who we elected to run this city going to step up and make a difference? In my optimistic little world, i'd like to see the park fenced in, and it's care taken over by the people who love it and want to preserve it. We'd all have keys to get in. Cameras everywhere. Sorry to hear that. That really sucks. While it may seem like focusing on this stuff from a law enforcement perspective is secondary given the more serious crimes occurring so frequently, if there's anything that can be learned from NYC's efforts a decade ago it is that focusing on quality of life crime with zero tolerance is the best way to reduce the more serious crimes. Often the people caught in the activites you describe below are the same people who either have or will commit the more serious offenses. Zero tolerance for these kinds of offenses also sets a tone and expectation that law and decorum are important and failure to abide by them will not be tolerated - which again translates into an attitude that helps drive the entire city forward. We've had this discussion before and, like far to much in this city, nothing ever changes... Madison Marquette - if you are reading this board please have a voice on this issue. Whether publicly or privately you are the only voice of apparent reason that actually gets results (giving you credit I think is due for the recent prostitution stings), and this kind of crap is going to kill your investment if you don't weigh in and help drive change. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Hinge [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Well, they lasted 2 days. [AsburyPark] Re: 18 Johns arrested in AP yesterday
Tommy, Thanks! I too, can't quite be in the mix, per se, as far as The Black Experience. I wasn't raised in the ghetto and had never heard the word, attributed to Blacks, until the riots of the 60's! I was so naive, I didn't know the projects, were public housing, or that public housing, was for low income people, of all races! I didn't understand why some whites, called us, the N word. I had never seen a Puerto Rican, or persons, readily speaking Spanish, until, I moved here! When I came East, in 1970, I couldn't understand Blacks, (older ones), referring to African Americans, as colored, when progressives like myself, self-defined myself, as African American or just plain Black, because I am really mixed, don't know which African tribe I descended, from! When I look back, now, I really led a charmed life. My father owned a business, and I, with my 3 siblings, attended Parochial School, for 13 years and stupidly assumed, people were poor, through their own fault! Why? My father always had 2 jobs, we lived in a home he bought after his service, in WWII. All of our family and associates were Roman Catholic! My family ran the gamut of complexions, so fair, they were mistaken for white and so black, it was undeniable, who they were! I stupidly thought all Blacks, looked like that, before I had formal Black Studies, out of curiosity, more than to seek the truth! There are still People of Color, in my home-town, who don't consider themselves as Black people, clinging to and denying, their Black Heritage. I feel sorry for them, for their apparent, ignorance! Katrina, should have opened their eyes! I've also learned from other ethnicities, the importance of teaching your children, who they are, what traditions they should adhere, to. Maybe one day, we can put our biases down and help each other. I still dream a world... Sharon --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, justifiedright [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Assimilation, anyone? The third-generation American and actress is under fire this week from fellow Latinos for comments she made to Para Todos magazine: Alba is my last name and I'm proud of that. But that's it. My grandparents were born in California, the same as my parents, and though I may be proud of my last name, I'm American. Throughout my whole life, I've never felt connected to one particular race or heritage, nor did I feel accepted by any. If you break it down, I'm less Latina than Cameron Diaz, whose father is Cuban. But people don't call her Latina because she's blonde My grandfather was the only Mexican at his college, the only Hispanic person at work and the only one at the all-white country club. He tried to forget his Mexican roots, because he never wanted his kids to be made to feel different in America. He and my grandmother didn't speak Spanish to their children. Now, as a third- generation American, I feel as if I have finally cut loose. My whole life, when I was growing up, not one race has ever accepted me, ... So I never felt connected or attached to any race specifically. I had a very American upbringing, I feel American, and I don't speak Spanish. So, to say that I'm a Latin actress, OK, but it's not fitting; it would be insincere. She never felt connected to any race, specifically, but she always felt American. That doesn't sounds like a bad thing, does it? And yet, it is, in the eyes of many activists. One blog post on the comments remarks, Guess sell-outs come in all races and sizes. Another calls it a disturbing hoard of quotes. Another claims she hates Mexicans. Comments about Alba's comments include, F**K YOU THEN, JESSICA VIVA LA RAZA!!!, She should just change her last name to White, then, and I thought she could be a good role model for Latinas, but she is a fake, tryin' to be white. Alba wasn't trying to make a political statement. Instead, she sounds like she was trying to avoid speaking for an entire ethnicity and many recent immigrants when she barely speaks Spanish, and identifies as an American first. But because she didn't reflexively take upon herself her ethnic mantle and collective responsibility, she's bashed as a traitor to her race. Elsewhere, a phenomenally successful first-generation immigrant was sharing his secret to success in America, which was much the same as the approach Alba's college-educated grandfather took. When addressing the national Association of Hispanic Journalists, and responding to question about how Hispanics can improve academically, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said: You've got to turn off the Spanish television set and

So, who will be running for the next elections in our city who might make a difference. I think it's high time that the mayor and council be replaced. Do you think that there are actually people out there who even want to take real charge of this city and are qualified to do so? The most obvious things that need to happen in our city are completely ignored. My girlfriend and I got into an argument about this very subject the other night. [AsburyPark] The little things matter
There are the remains of bicycle chained to a street sign on Main Street on the same block as The Saint. It's been sitting there for over a week now, and every few days, it looks like somebody has stolen another piece off of it. And everyday, the police, the mayor, and the town council probably drive past it. So do the people who pass thru our town. I am increasingly getting the impression that our cities administration is either too apathetic or too clueless to understand that the city will always be judged by it's appearence. Boarded up houses covered with graffiti are hurting us. Garbage everywhere is hurting us. Last night, I walked my dog on the boardwalk past two police officers at the same time when there were more bicyclists then pedestrians. While I love that somehow it's ok to walk my dog there even though the signs say otherwise, as well as my fellow bicyclists having a good time out on the boardwalk, it just makes me wonder if this isn't part of the deeper problem. You are correct. I did send a few emails to the APHS that still haven't been answered 2 weeks later. It always bugs me when an organization puts an email address on their website but doesn't answer their emails. I even volunteered to help with the park. What is needed is an unannounced occasional police sweep on the boardwalk issuing summonses to those breaking the law. Just like they listed the names of the 18 Johns, they should also list the names of the boardwalk violators. Word will spread like wildfire and people just might begin to obey the laws. -Original Message- From: Hinge [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wed, 20 Jun 2007 10:49 am Subject: [AsburyPark] The little things matter There are the remains of bicycle chained to a street sign on Main Street on the same block as The Saint. Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: if there's anything that can be learned from NYC's efforts a decade ago it is that focusing on quality of life crime with zero tolerance is the best way to reduce the more serious crimes. I, like many others, witnessed that transformation in NYC in the 90s. And was impressed with Guiliani on that front at least. I also remember some crying, foul fascists tactics at the time. But I also saw the no broken windows philosophy work very close to me. My school district started to experience some problems with graffiti and littering around the building. I saw one of the culprits in action one day emptying his locker garbage onto the hallway floor and leaving it there. I asked him to pick up after himself. Spoiled white kid of professional parents replied that's was why we hire janitors. I insisted, so scowling white boy picks up his stuff. Soon after, we got a new superintendent who required that maintenance staff remove all signs of new graffiti overnight and repair any vandalism soon after it was discovered. If student was caught, he or his parents were fined. Also, each time halls emptied after change of classes, maintenance people immediately moved through every hallway and swept/mopped all litter away so that at next bell students saw halls clean again. (Floors also shined from some chemical they use in the mops.) Within months, our building was basically free of litter. Students followed the model and cleaned up after themselves without intimidating gestapo tactics. In my book of anecdotes, zero-tolerance works. Consistent modeling works (along with judicious use of strongly worded warnings and fines.) I can't prove this, but I also noticed a nice improvement in overall attitude among the students. Pride in their surroundings. Sounds Pollyannaish, or Leave it to Beaver-ish, butI I saw the theory in practice. Oh yeah, one more thing. Supervisors insisted that teachers stand outside their classrooms between periods. High visibility worked too. A liberal for zero tolerance ** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Like when my boss once told me, your job is to keep your desk clean, ...you should have those under you that are qualified to do the job.. So as a taxpayer, you should have those in office and administration tht have the capability to run a complex city such as asbury park. Take 1 square mile: - the whole east side should be (east of main) should be left to run itself, other then keeping tabs on the redevelopment. That's where the REdvelopment office/economic development team comes in. On the West side (West of main): - North of 3rd Ave - not much to do - Asbury Ave to 3rd Ave - some work to do - Asbury Ave to Springwood - then divide this up: Bangs to springwood, Bangs to Asbury Ave and breakdown one or 2 more. - Each councilman gets a responsibility of a quadrant and gets a team together - code enforecment, police, fire dept, building, social services, economic development, tax assesor and quality of life. THEN, like the Mexican plan for paying for education, each council member and their team could share in a bonus paid to themthe team for imoprovements to their assigned quadrant: - The team receives money for improvements in: - education of those in their area - increased tax collections - increase in fees for violations - quality of life bonus points - new or improvements in services and business services It's a small city. [AsburyPark] Use green money be earth friendly
Use new dollar coins instead of paper dollar bills The life cycle of the new dollar coin is 30 years compared to the paper dollar which is 1.5 years . . . “The paper note is made from 75% virgin cotton 25% linen blend of paper, and industrial oil based ink which is used to produce the coloring on the paper. A metal plate is used to imprint the design on the note. Only non-recycled cotton and linen are used in the printing of the paper note. The paper dollar is bleached and shredded after circulation and only 10% is recycled. The other 90% is placed in landfills. The coin dollar allows for a complete recycle of the metal used to manufacture the coin, including the final coin when it comes out of circulation and all metal waste from the process itself.” The government could save more than $500 million yearly if the public embraces the new gold-colored dollar. Do something to help the environment - Go to your bank an ask for dollar coins and use them in every day life. ** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/channel-08/?hpid=topnews There's a hour long talk with Bloomberg online. After watching it, I continue to believe that he's the guy who should run. He just breaks things down to simple problems and gets things done. After being a Democrat for nearly all of his life and a Republican for the last 8 years or so, he's now officially an independent. It's the perfect place to be. Why be beholden to party politics and be forced to support policies you don't agree with? I'll never understand why Americans want politics to be like sports with one side having to be better than the other. If anyone believes 100% of their party platform something is wrong, imo. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Monmouth Immigration
Kim Guadagno - Tough on Illegal Immigration By Eric Sedler | June 20, 2007 Today, Monmouth County Sheriff Candidate Kim Guadagno called for implementing a tough policy that would ensure safer communities by checking the immigration status of anyone already incarcerated in the Monmouth County Jail before the inmate is released. Guadagno, the Republican candidate for Monmouth County Sheriff, was a fromer state and federal prosecutor. She announced that if elected she would require corrections officers to implement provisions of the federal program known as 287(g) of the ¡°Immigration Reform Act of 1996¡å. Under this program corrections officers working with federal authorities gain necessary resources and authority to immediately determine the immigration status of an inmate. Considering the events that happened with the plot against Fort Dix, this makes complete sense and sounds like a great plan. ¡°It¡¯s time get serious about protecting the families and residents of Monmouth County,¡± said Sheriff Candidate Guadagno. ¡°The implementation of this program in the Sheriffs Office will greatly increase protection of Monmouth County families from potential terrorists like the Fort Dix six.¡± ¡°A majority of those involved in the Fort Dix case had frequent run-ins with the law. Had this program been in place, the Duka brothers may have been transferred to federal custody ¨Cor even deported¨C well before the Fort Dix plot evolved,¡± said Guadagno. She continued, ¡°Because an inmate¡¯s immigration status is immediately checked under through this program, potential terrorists like the Fort Dix Six immediately come to the attention of federal authorities. Thus, the residents of Monmouth County are protected.¡± ¡°This is a program the Monmouth County Sheriff¡¯s Office will implement when I am Sheriff. Potential terrorists like the Fort Dix Six who are unlawfully in the U.S. will immediately be brought to the attention of federal authorities. As a bonus to the taxpayers, because the already incarcerated convict will become a federal inmate, Monmouth County will be relieved of the cost of feeding and housing that criminal.¡± If elected, Ms. Guadagno would make Monmouth County Sheriff¡¯s office would become the first county in New Jersey to implement the 287g program for its correctional officers. The 287g program has been adopted in a number of states with successful results. In Alabama, the program enabled troopers to identify and convict 27 individuals who were using fraudulent documents in an attempt to obtain driver¡¯s licenses. Thirteen were convicted of state charges, including narcotics violations and possession of forged instruments. The program even uncovered a registered sex offender, who was subsequently deported. Sounds like a great idea. Definately good to see a Sheriff Candidate taking the initiative to combat a problem locally. [AsburyPark] belmar411.com website
An interesting commentary on the belmar411.com website. The idea is to target via the web, problem houses/landlords. The Belmar Rental 411.com Web site does nothing but further prove that Belmar is using public funds to contribute to a pattern of segregation between homeowners and landlords who rent their homes to summer renters. It amazes me that Belmar, which in 2001 was fined $14,000 in New Jersey Superior Court for violating the federal Fair Housing Act, continues to push the envelope with its Rental 411.com Web site hosted on our municipal Web site using taxpayer dollars. Attorneys general throughout the United States have been fighting housing segregation for years, but it is now OK for a public entity to violate property owners' civil rights. If you're only a landlord/taxpayer and rent your home out in the summer, you're now added to a special Belmar Web site list. All the other property owners in Belmar won't make it. The Web site allows anyone to zoom in on a satellite picture of the borough's 320 summer rental homes to a street-level view of selected homes. Those viewing the site can click on the selected homes earmarked with a color and a window opens up displaying: the property owner's name, property location, number of noise violations, picture of the landlord's property and amount of bond that has been posted due to violations. Some pictures are of the homeowner's garbage cans, etc. The Rental 411 Web site is reminiscent of how Hitler's Germany would most likely have segregated its population using today's technology. The site further assigns the rentals into colors and characterizations: the cop with the night stick (very bad), red (bad), yellow (close to bad) and blue ( good). Absent from the Rental 411 Web site are things that people in Belmar would really like to see. Maybe orange could be used to flag the properties where drugs have been found or where a recent arrest was made. Black could flag a list of properties where sex offenders are living, and gray a list of wife beaters' homes. Maybe a passport image could be placed over the homes where illegal immigrants are known to be living, since they tax the schools with their children. Purple could flag the restaurants where the Board of Health found violations. Brown could flag properties of year-round homeowners who rake their leaves in the street. Bright green could flag the public officials' homes, who are paid high salaries to think of Web sites such as this one. A beer bottle character with a rose could be used to flag all the bars in town that have been given sweet deals instead of closure. Foreign flags could be set up to identify the Irish, Italians and every other nationality. Maybe a new deadbeat character could be designed to designate the homes and property owners who owe the town back taxes, water bills or are deadbeat dads. Where will it end? Once a pattern of segregation is supported by your local government, you and every citizen of the United States are the ones who are impacted and at risk. It's only time before you make the next list of segregation. Lastly, just how new is the information on the Rental 411's site? I was astonished to see the home of a friend, Robert Sullivan, a veteran Jersey City police officer, on the red or bad list. Especially, since he has not rented his home in more than two years and died in the spring of 2006. Not only is segregation going on in Belmar, but there is a lack of respect for its citizens who have met the supreme commander after years of public service. Kevin J. Devine BELMAR Yahoo! Such stories always leave me wondering where is the emphasis on another major cause of the problem: the people, companies, corporations, et al. who employ undocumented workers? Back in the 80's, I applied to be director of a summer program at Monmouth College. Even though I personally knew many on the staff there, I was required to dig up all sorts of documentation to prove I was a U.S. citizen. No exceptions. At that time, I checked with people I knew who owned a local nursery garden center. They confirmed that they had to comply with strict requirements that everyone working there had to have proper documentation on him at all times. Immigration officials would stop by unannounced to check. At the same time, the owner of the business had high praise for the work ethic of the immigrant workers she employed. What prompted my asking her was that I overheard her on the phone with a close friend of hers who wanted her to hire her son as a favor. After that call, the business owner confided in me that she lied about having no openings because she preferred the immigrants (migrant workers?). What happened to those laws? And I'm not a nativist. ** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

I'll take any cue to reiterate my views research conclusions on JSRM. Much of that compiled here: _http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AsburyPark/message/25733_ (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AsburyPark/message/25733) (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AsburyPark/message/25733) I also sent McLaughlin and Keady emails challenging them to explain their support for that mission in light of the many objections being raised. Neither responded. So the accuracy of my findings remains unchallenged. Looks like the tax-exempts of all stripes are more prone to gather their wagons 'round rather than face scrutiny. How ecumenical of them; however, I don't think that's what John XXIII meant by the term. === In a message dated 6/20/2007 1:43:36 P.M. [AsburyPark] paramount entrace and walkway
The new short lights in the half round shape near the Parmount entrance look nice. i suspected they were coming a few weeks ago from the size of electrical bases they had. Looks good. There are still 2 mystery light bases on each side of the walkway. I can't figure out what they will be, maybe something different that takes longer to arrive. It's pretty amazing what that area has become, and what it has gone from. When you talk about land use, this is land use at it's best. I enjoy what's there now a lot more then what was there before. Before the grassy area may have looked nice, but think how much more usefull this new layout is. It's not full of concrete either. Theres lot of green and relaxing looknig plants too. Theres also a lot of space for outdoor music and other outdoor events. Also, take notice how many crowds of people walk from Ocean Ave to the boardwalk. This wasnt even thinkable in the previous desgin. Side by side on the one small sidewalk is how it was! Yahoo!
