how to switch to non graphical interface in esed nod 32?

hi,They say on the NVDA list when you press f5 it switches to the non graphical mode but it doesnt. When I press f5 it shows a settings dialog box and there is a tree view there. When I up and down arrow in the tree view, NVDA just says selected and when I press tab there is only an ok and a cancel button and an edit box. Btw Im using eset nod 32 7.0. Im afraid sebby I utterly disagree, since to be honest all that library playlist sharing crap is stuff I dont need, and it annoys me to have it around the interface. Winamp lets you hide and show just what elements you want, and the basic file playback bit is quite easy. organize into folders, play in order etc are all things your os should do, and it irritates me that Itunes cant just do the same, indeed as I said it seems to follow the modern interface convention of chuck as much at the screen as humanly possible. With winamp, to play a complete book or album, I just find the folder, on my organized harddrive, and select play in winamp, and thats it, no mess.I dont mind people using extra services or having the options available, heck, when I was compiling music for our rp session i did!use the winamp playlist feature, but it irritates me when that is the only! option as with Itunes
. indeed, the only way Ive found to get Itunes to play folders sensably is to copy the folder into an itnes playlist, ignore everything else Itunes does, then delete the entire playlist and all contents when Im finished. This is doable, but needlessly annoying when I could just copy the folder as is. About mediaplayer classic, well I dont know not having tried it, but to be honest Ive been happy with winamp for years, especially with its streaming and ability to play many different file formats (which I doubt any other player besides foobar could do). Then there as is the equaliser as I said. The main problem with winamp was, as Chris said, I never saw a reason to buy the full version. For cd wripping I configured the default windows media player to basically do an insta wrip and grab info off the net as soon as I stick in the cd, then vanish as soon as the wrip was finished, makin
g it an automatic process (actually this was the only thing I do! regularly use windows media player for). Other than that it didnt seem winamp pro had much to offer really. if theyd held back something, like internet streaming say Id likely have bought the program, indeed Im almost a little sorry I didnt now just to support developement.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156271#p156271

Re: Winamp going to heavens on 20th of December 2013

@Dark, thats exactly what Im saying--youre resisting the migration to a centralised library, and are then surprised when more mainstream players dont appear to meet your needs. Well, of course they dont; you still find files using a filesystem browser. Migrate the files to your library instead, or better yet, distinguish between the good and the golden and only maintain the golden in your library, preferably in lossless format from the original CD. I cant disagree with the need to have choice, and I wish iTunes had more choices for playing files without adding them to library or queueing them up without their needing to be in your library first, but I still think your hatred of iTunes is a little bit unfair when youre not using it the way it was intended.Again though, use the right software. I think MPC is a better fit than WinAmp ever
was when I started to use it, though it might not have the same depth of file format support; its limited to those file types supported by DirectShow. I dont think that includes ChipTunes or ModTracker. But, if the (now discontinued, by the looks of it) Foobar2000 will do it, thats awesome. Predictably, OS X is less gifted than Windows when it comes to obscure formats, but all the important stuff is covered including all of the open ones. And yes, try VLC--of all the players, the file format support (derived from work in mplayer and ffmpeg) is simply excellent.Anyway, for now your plan of grabbing the latest WinAMP sounds about right. Presumably youll have to turn off any Internet-related features it uses.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156274#p156274

Re: are these games playable?!

I dont remember the way the character select is arranged on Hyper Dimension or Super Butouden 1, but 2 and 3 are something like:SB2: You start on Gohan. In Story mode, the others are Trunks, Vegeta and Piccolo (I dont know how theyre arranged). In Battle mode, Trunks, Vegeta and Piccolo are below him (and Goku if you unlock him), and on the right are Cell, Cell Jr, Zangya and Bojak.SB3: From the top left: Goku, Goten, Buu/future Trunks (Future Trunks is a hidden character), kid Trunks, Majin Vegeta. Bottom left: Gohan, Supreme Kai, Majin Buu, Dabura, #18.I dont remember the layouts in HD or SB1, but I believe they contain these characters:Hyper Dimension: Goku, Gohan (ultimate), Piccolo, Vegeta (Majin), Gotenks, Vegetto, Freeza, Cell, Kid BuuSB1: Goku (base), Piccolo, Vegeta, Freeza, #20, #18, Imperfect Cell, #16, (unlockables: ) SSJ Goku, SSJ Vegeta, SSJ2 Gohan, Perfect Cell, Future Trunks(SB1 has the
largest number of characters, but the game play isnt so great compared to the others. Its at least easier to dodge super attacks, though (press up-down-A about a second or two after one fires). Hyper Dimension has a small but diverse cast, with the characters playing very differently from each other (Goku can teleport, Cell can summon Cell Jrs, I think Piccolo has his stretchy arms...). The audio is friendliest in SB2 and SB3, and SB3 has the least latency and is the most VI-friendly, but SB3 also comes across as pretty incomplete compared to SB2.)URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156284#p156284

Re: music production software?

I dont have the solution youre looking for, but I use Noteworthy Composer (judging by everyone else, though, you probably want to go with QWS if youre doing midi), Timidity (so I dont have to switch soundfonts all the time), the Bassmidi driver, Sound Tap, Wave Pad (an older version that is more accessible), and Audacity.None of those, though, is comparable to the mainstream music production software. Maybe some of Audacitys features and extensions get it kinda close, but its awfully heavy and is designed to incentivize the use of its least intuitively accessible components, so I keep my use of it to only the features Wave Pad lacks (Nyquist, bass boost, tone/noise generation (NCH Tone Generator was easier for those the last time I tried it, but its absurdly expensive), things like that).URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156286#p156286<

Re: Saga of Soul: an enjoyable web serial

So Im a little confused about how these work. According to wiki, theyre a series of scripted videos. So does that mean that what you guys are reading is just the script, and theres videos that you can watch to go along with these web serials? That could be kind of cool actually, reading the script of something and then watching it in video form so youd know exactly what was going on. I suppose I could just check it out for myself, but that would involve not being lazy.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156294#p156294

This especially goes for audio books, since its far easier to just find an author and play their stuff directly from windows explorer. Again, if people like all the extra hassle and ratings and such, fair enough, Im all for choice, I just wish Itunes had! choice. heck, it was partly all the library mallarchy that put me off windows mediaplayer in the first place, since to be honest I could never really see any bennifit when all you want to do is play some audio, indeed Ive only ever used playlists on winamp for my rp group as I said. Perhaps foobar does this, I do know people who recommend it, but again, since winamp has a really nice and customizable interface why not?The only thing Ive disliked in the last few versions of Winamp was the business that if any usb device is plugged in winamp asks if it is a portable music device and attempts to load it, even if its just a memory stick or passport drive, but compared to the irritation of Itunes, or the only slightly less irritating windows media player, thats really not a problem at all.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156295#p156295

Re: Winamp going to heavens on 20th of December 2013

Fair enough, Dark. Youve obviously made your mind up. Personally Ive made the move, and love having everything easily accessible in one joy-filled application. Sure theres lots of other stuff floating around on my disks that will never go in there, but my purchases jive well with all my CD rips and Audible and BookMaker (m4b built from MP3) books, I can remotely control my library from my iPhone and stream it round the flat with AirPlay, copy or play library items easily and automatically from iTunes on other computers or iOS devices, share my library with guests and let them vote on songs to listen to, and its all just fabulous. I guess you could say I was a true consumer. Of course, it also helps a lot that I manually migrated most of
my stuff. Perhaps you cant do that with your library, and need extra tools just to tag your files using ID3 with information stored in folder paths, just so iTunes doesnt turn your lovely collection into a steaming pile. I can appreciate how thats one hell of a disincentive, but if you name your files consistently its just a matter of writing or using a script or program that will perform the tagging before you import.Anyway, different spokes for different folks, I suppose, as usual. I just wanted you to know that there were success stories as well as haters. URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156298#p156298

[Audiogames-reflector] The Shannara Series by Terry Brooks

2013-11-24 Thread AudioGames.net Forum — Off-topic room: bladestorm360

The Shannara Series by Terry Brooks

I was just wondering how many people have read these? Its one of the longest series Ive found so far by a single author that hasnt gone to ghost writers, and it all ties together really well. I tried them a long while back and never got into them for some reason, but then picked them up again fairly recently and am finding that I really like them. The universe is perfect for me, a blend of science, magic and fantasy that really does justice to the mixed-genre style. For those that have read them, how did you start? The author recommends reading the original Shannara Trilogy first, then going back to fill in some gaps before advancing. But if you read them in chronological order, which is how Im doing it, they actually start with the Word and the Void series, which is a prequel to the entire series of books. According to the author, you ruin your trip through the Shannara world if you read them that way, but I find that Im rather enjoying it and
havent lost anything so far. In fact, things seem to make a lot more sense this way.I think these are a really good set of fantasy series, and based on a unique concept that I havent seen before in any other series. They cross just about every genre and do it well. I highly recommend these to anyone who likes medieval fantasy or mixed genre books.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156304#p156304

If you love fighting games and like playing them on the go then theres actually quite a bit for the vita, as well as another version of Muramasa which is pretty playable as I mentioned before. As to blazblue, the games are all good... the pace and combo system are awesome, just not my favorite cup of tea in regards to atmosphere and themes. I really like this game. Its definitely something small to pass time with. Personally though, I think a menu systems ould slow everything down int he long run, especially after you unlock every weapon and want to get to the most powerful ones. Youd have to every time scroll all the way down when its your turn, which would be quite slow. I have to write scripts or do renaming just to do things like play files from an audio book in order? and why cant I just transfer stuff onto my Iphone in the folders Ive created the way any mp3 player works? As I said, if you go apple from the start and begin with that system, and just! download everything through Itunes, well thats a different s
tory and likely works better, indeed that I suspect is what Apple want. I also imagine Itunes on the mac is less bloody stupid with its interface. However its the incompatibility with all my existing stuff, over 700 gb of existing stuff that gets up my nose. As to library advantages, well Ive never really seen advantages to the system myself in windows, whether in winamp, windows media player or whatever. I dont particularly care about peoples ratings, or whatever sort of genre or other random classification the software wants to chuck on me, as I said, ive already got my stuff organized as I like in forders Ive setup myself which is good enough for me. I will agree that having instant transfer onto my Iphone would be a useful thing, bug again, not particularly enough to make me want to go and rejigger all my stuff with Apples silly tags just so they
will play in propper order (aside from the fact that the way Apple organize stuff isnt the way I like to), especially with something like an audio book which I may listen to once, then not come back to until years later. As it is my way around, by just creating a playlist with an appropriate folder name in itunes, then copying the contents of one of my folders into that playlist works well enough, albeit its less convenient than just copying the folders across directly would be.As I said, If you find the library thing with the ratings and whatever of use to you, thats fine, I agree very much with your different strokes comment, it just narks me that Apple unfortunately dont. That! (along with its less than stellar interface), is the thing I hate about Itunes.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156339#p156339

Re: [Audiogames-reflector] The Shannara Series by Terry Brooks

2013-11-24 Thread AudioGames.net Forum — Off-topic room: Dark

Re: The Shannara Series by Terry Brooks

Well Ive not read any of Brooks magic Kingdom or Antony so I cant comment on those. But to be honest I just found Shanara pretty dire. I began with the original Sword of shanara, and it seemed every character was a walking DD class architype, there was no actual characterisation, (heck there is only one female character in the entire book), the writing seemed extremely flat and clunky and the plot seemed a very pale copy of Lotr. in recognition however that this was Brooks first novel and hed written many others, I looked at the First King of Shanara, the elfstones of Shanara and the Druid of Shanara. Even though they were less blatant Tolkien parodies, I just found the things flat and colourless due to very sterriotypical characters, unenspired situations, utter lack of propper character developement, blatant sexism and names that frankly in an audio book made me cringe,
flik? par? It also irritated me that for all the long speel brooks gave about different magics and how one mage specialised in this and another in that, all mages ever seemed to do was sense magic and druid fire! indeed I got a bit board of druid fire! . the only book that really gave me pause was druids, and then only towards the end thanks to really brooding and quite creepy descriptions of its monsters and a very alien location, but again there the resolution just felt predictable and lack luster, trying to create tragedy for its own sake. I also found the same naming conventions to persist, --- I mean the main bad guys name was Ul belc! really, this sounds like someone chugging down a mug of beer gulp! belch! . I do believe Its a shame Brooks never seemed to learn more about propper characters or plots that didnt l look s if they came from a standard dD players guide, because actually I do agree the world and concept were quite unique. I liked the idea behind them, and I did think some of Brooks monsters and locations were quite unique, but really for me there are people who do that sort of thing far better without the clunky writing style, lack luster names and dirth of interesting characters. Tad williams war of the flowers for instance is great for techno magic, and I just finished The Rythmetist by Brandon sanderson, which as an alternate history steam punk style book with a detailed mathematical system was pretty awsome in concept.Really for all Brooks had some good ideas, I just dont feel hes enough of a propper writer to
warrent me spending my time, or at least that was my feeling at the last Brooks novel I read.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156341#p156341

Re: Saga of Soul: an enjoyable web serial

Written stories that update daily or weekly and are published online are called Web Serials, and have been since long, long before youtube was even a thing. I seem to remember works like _A Future Wed Like To See_, Greyhound Chronicles_, _Hydrogen Guy_, and _Galactic Customs_ using the term web serial to describe themselves. So thatd put the start of the term some time between 1995 and 1999 or so. Ive always heard video series like The Guild or Red VS Blue called webshows, vodcasts, or vidcasts, but Ive never heard the term web serial applied to them. I know TVTropes uses the term Web Originals to apply to written or filmed series, so maybe thats the standard terminology these days. @CAE_Jones: Are you thinking of something like this:http://www.shadowunit.org/or this more NSFW example:https://www.fictionpress.co
m/s/1688508/1/Those are really the only two works I can think of where the fiction is in screenplay format, and the video was never produced, and maybe was never intended to be produced. Its not really my cup of tea, personally. It just feels so odd to limit yourself to a TV Script format when youre making a written work, and could thus be so much more expressive. Though I will admit Jetpack would quickly get really, really, really tiresome if the author was slowing down the pace with descriptions. But Shadow Unit would be so much better in prose.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156347#p156347

[Audiogames-reflector] Don't read this! More boring rl.

2013-11-24 Thread AudioGames.net Forum — Off-topic room: thetruegamer

Don't read this! More boring rl.

Im writing this for my sanity, and weather you read this or not is your decision entirely. I just need to vent my feelings a little, hope people understand and wont think that Im insane, though I might as well be on the very path to insanity itself.Which is ironic, considering I just joined Insanity in Alter Aeon It wasnt long ago I wrote about school and how everything was going good. It has even gotten better, well that was, til this last friday.Hmm maybe even thursday.I wrote that my feelings for Felicia had faded, which is true. Ill still say shes an amazing person though. Come to think of it, I didnt really have any sexual feelings for her in the first place, it was more friendly. So lately Ive been putting my eyes on a very pretty girl, obviously in the same class as me. Its pretty f*cked
up, but wherever I go I seem to fall in love. Well actually, ever since Felicia. Before I met her I stopped looking for love. Well, its something my brain does subconsciously. So I had a period from eighth grade til this summer where I didnt fall in love. I swear, that period was so fucking wonderful. I kinda miss the apathy, the not giving a shit attitude. And ever since Felicia, Ive put my eye on three girls (how groce to put once eye there). First it was a girl who turned out to already have a boyfriend. Glad it never turned out there since actually shes rather boring. Then there was this really fresh rocker girl a while ago, but that didnt last long really. I never approached her, and I quit thinking about her just after two days or so. Then theres this girl ...She might either be the smartest or most dumb person walking on this plannet, I dont know yet. I asked my swedish teacher to take me to our technical, the guy in charge of
our network and computers to solve a problem I had. Anyway, while walking there, I said Why are those that always study the most, particularly girls, the stupidest?, and he responded Well I dont think it has to do with being directly stupid. Ive seen many of those, I know who you mean. Its a pressure to get the top grades, its a kinda insecurity to do wrong thatll make them do exactly that, wrong and looking stupid. Its a confidence problem.Looking back now, I am first of all ashamed of thinking of her as stupid, but really, I couldnt help it. Also looking at my passed self, and to some extent, even today, I realized it. Hell, I am very very shy, I am afraid to do things wrong. It makes me stutter and just to say something instead of keep stumbling over the right words, I say something stupid that doesnt make sense. It wasnt really until I got to talk to her more that I realized she wasnt
stupid. I was just finnished with lunch, and the tech dude had told me to return after lunch so he could prescribe a new computer to me to test if thatd solve my issues. I was talking to some girls, one of the girls, Ida, got a phone call. I said Anyone mind taking me to the computer guy?, and Elvina, which is her name, offered. We went there, no big business of it, but well that made us late for the lesson. I was really ashamed I had caused her to miss part of it, I knew that she was into studying a lot. She went in alone, leaving me looking for a seat, but the math teacher, whos a big retard really, told her to help me get a seat ... hmm could do that on my own. I was so worried that I had upset her that I took every sign of reject as a bad sign. But well Ive realized that its kinda similar to myself. I can act strange if I dont feel comfortable, and its only with certain people I do. I hope that its the same for her.
Then, we had to work on Index in math, and also a small experiment. Only 10 minutes left on the lesson, and she surprised me. Id never thought shed say that. Ah, fuck this. Ill listen to music instead.Grabbing a chance for a conversation, I asked her what kinda music and yeah ... talked a bit. Then she kinda looked away and I realized, alright, Im pushing it a bit too far here.Ive been thinking a lot about her. Why is she so shy? And is there a darker secret behind her shyness. I am actually going to go on a loose limb here and say this, her last name is arabic. I know how wimmen are suppressed there, is she being beaten at home? I am not thinking this about any of the other arabic girls, because they are all so confident and happy and even a bit ... hmm not arrogant.A couple of nights with really bad sleep. Shes so beautiful, so sweet and interesting. However I am terribly afraid for a couple of reasons:1: I d ont want to hurt her, emotionally or physically, directly or indirectly. With shy people, and I speak from own experience, its very easy for someone to say something and the other person interpreting that as something it is not. This could result in emotional self-hatred and self-consciounse. Also if her family is the problem, they might start trying to control her if she starts being with me. Also approaching her real fast could

No its not hard, in fact its very easy to do with the right weapons. But it is tedious as hell. 16-2 is the easiest stage Ive found for grinding them. 22-2 can work, but they dont seem to show up as much, either the robots or the shooters.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156353#p156353

It should be there. Once youre in the recruit screen, theres a slider type thing you can set to hire units, and then theres a hire button to start the process. Its been a long time since I played these games though, so maybe theyve changed something.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156354#p156354

[[wow]] dark, what a glowing review of the shannara series, hahaha.Interesting opinions though. Im not sure why I dont find the writing that bad, especially not after reading some of the other books I have. I do know this though, I pretty much never read anything in audiobook form unless its graphic audio, and Ive even dropped off on that. I prefer to read in text with a Sapi Voice. However, I can tell you this. And this is something that very much impresses me about the series. There will be mild spoilers in the next paragraph, which I dont think Dark will care much about, but anyone else planning on reading the series should stop here.I dont know if he had this all planned out from the start, but the series actually starts in present day Illinois, in the Word and the Void series. I found I was able to relate to some of the characters, and it explains a lot of why theres references to science in the Shannara books, and
why some of the names arent exactly typical fantasy, like Par and Flick, and why there are more modern names in the books like Jeff and Morgan. I think its funny that you compare these books to the Lord of the Rings though, because Ive tried reading the Lord of the Rings several times and have stopped every time, whereas Ive been stuck into this series for months and am still enjoying it. I must be one of the only fantasy buff that isnt into LOTR. I even tried watching the movie once and fell asleep, lol.I admit the books dont stack up to some of the other fantasy books around, as I said, but I dont quite think theyre worth the absolute verbal shredding they were just given either. But I suppose its all just a matter of opinion, as in all things. ure.Fastfinge, well, Ill give you that, Piers Anthony certainly is strange. Ive read a couple of his Xanth books, Battle Circle and I think a couple in the Apprentice Adept series, but cant really get into his work much lately. Battle Circle was probably his most down to earth work, though even it had its strange points.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156355#p156355

I must be one of the only fantasy buff that isnt into LOTR. I even tried watching the movie once and fell asleep, lol.I think even the first book has a lot of unique points. For one thing, the main character isnt even a warrior. He travels with a lot of warriors, but he himself doesnt really even know how to use much more than a knife it seems, same with his brother. I also like how even though the main weapon of the series was a sword, and a really well-forged sword at that, its power wasnt just slinging around magic that could slay the
warlock lord, but instead just simple truth, which Ive certainly never seen anywhere else. The guy writes combat a lot better than Ive seen a lot of other authors as well, which is a big sticking point for me.Im curious where you got blatant sexism though, because there are woman in these books that are just as good at combat, if not better, than the men, and some much more cold-hearted than any of the other characters.I admit the books dont stack up to some of the other fantasy books around, as I said, but I dont quite think theyre worth the absolute verbal shredding they were just given either. Re: Saga of Soul: an enjoyable web serial

Yeah, then it sounds to me like a poorly written article on wiki that either hasnt been caught yet, or is one of the supposed opinionated articles written by an editor or staff member that just get rewritten if someone tries to fix them. It does mension that the first use of the web serial term likely originated in 1995 as you said, but I couldnt say how accurate the rest of it is.I have to agree, screen play format isnt very expressive. But then, its not really meant to be. Its meant to describe whats happening, and its left up to the actors to make that expressive and emotional. Ive been running into the same thing reading Futurama scripts. I keep thinking how some of my favorite scenes wouldnt be nearly as funny, or not funny at all, if I had read them in text first, until I saw the actual episode. But thats hwy I think it could be cool though, because you could read the script, and then watch the video and as a
blind person, know exactly what was going on.Also, shadow unit is a cool name for a series.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156357#p156357

Re: Don't read this! More boring rl.

Truegamer, firstly to be perfectly honest dam well relax! really everyone makes a mess at that point in school. You will learn later the difference between love and infatuation, but that is a matter of knowing yourself and experience, and not believing everything you think at first or indeed your first impressions of a person. its like any skill it needs practice, and practice can be anything but fun. Still, theres no way through it but learning, making friends with girls you like and just being dam well honest with yourself. Myself, I am at the point now I know exactly when I fall in love with someone, and even the sort of person I do. To be honest Im jealous of you, since you seem in a great position in your life and just finding out these things for yourself. Indeed believe me your situation could be much worse albeit I know that it probably doesnt feel like that to you. Just relax, breath, think about your feelings an
d learn to analyse them.Equally, the best way of dealing with self consciousness is simply to project. To learn to find emotions in yourself and feel them, to learn to connect with others and think about them so your no longer focused on yourself, since the majority of people arent anyway. This is how I, a shy intravert can write silly messages on the front of a website or stand on a stage, chat to an audience and sing.Second, to be brutally honest just believing someone is arabic so they must! be having a bad time at home is a massive leap to a conclusion. A good friend of mine was not merely arabic, but by birth an Iraqi, and a soophi Muslim, yet was far from the medias sterriotype of the poor oppressed Islamic woman, actually she was amazingly clever, extremely forthright and highly compitant and we regularly discussed cultural differences. Learning about other peoplle, telling when they have problem
s what makes a person shy, or overconfident or nervous is again a very delicate skill. It requires listening and emotional sense, and is something that oncemore needs lots of practice. Believing that just because a person is a certain race that they must! be a certain way would be like people assuming that because you were blind you wouldnt like wild music or heavy metal since theyre too rough for the poor denuded blindies. Regarding sight and how people treat you, no, I wont lye, its a pain in the backside, but the only way to get around it is learn people skills better, indeed a successful blind person needs far better! people skills than anyone else. Its not fun, but its true, and the alternative is just to sit at home, have no friends and do nothing with your life, which i suspect isnt something you want.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156360#p156360

Re: The Shannara Series by Terry Brooks

Well appologies Bladestorm, I think you were making your last post while I replied to Fastfinge about the Piers anthony stuff. Regarding Sword of shanara and lotr, it is the books plot structure that is so similar, event for event its almost identical with different place names, though if youve not read Lotr you wouldnt pick this up. One aspect however the not a warrior thing is exactly what made Lotr, and indeed the Hobbit before it so remarkable in fantasy since basically pre tolkien all fantasy was of the Conan the barbarian type of thing, tolkien was the first to write about ordinary people. The reason I say sexism isnt because of female warriors (albeit I think I only counted one in the four books I read), but because of female chracters actually doing anything! Sexism indeed isnt just about every woman being a hard case, but about female characters being as dynamic and interesting as male ones. <
/p>this is one reason why, even though the Culture of a world like Martins means that there are far fewer female characters who get involved in combat (albeit with exceptions), Martins books dont count as sexist since female characters have as much involvement with events and realistic personalities as male ones. In Brooks books most women appeared and went ah, handsome male hero, me fall instantly in love with you for no readily apparent reason (that when they werent being kidnapped like the single female character in Sword of Shanara). Now in Fairness this is an area where Lotr was also lacking, due to the time it was written, albeit Tolkien does have several female characters get heavily involved with the plot, and even some major ones such as Galadriel and Eowin. All of this I wouldnt mind so much though if I found brooks plotting a little more interesting. I do agree his
world is a unique concept where all his races came from and the mix of science, however I just never found any of the actual magic or quests interesting or any of the people who engaged upon them to be people I really cared about, indeed most seemed DD class architypes. Regarding combat, well Brooks never stood out for me in that area, not like someone like Douglas Hill or David Gemmel. Indeed while Gemmels plots are rather predictable, his combat is pretty fun! Brooks was okay, but only okay, and that didnt really give me enough next to the rest of his books. Regarding names, well I always like the human sound. Even when i read in braille Id have to know how a name actually sounded! out loud. This is why so many brooks names just felt utterly wrong, and as if hed just chucked letters at the page with no thought for how people would actually say them in normal everyday use. he didnt even tie t
hem to a specific different language either. As I said I did try my best to be fair to brooks in terms of reading several books of his and giving him a reasonable go, heck, I even read his novelization of Starwars Episode 1, but it just seemed the style, characters and DD class architypes didnt improve. Btw, its interesting you mention truth as a sword. Terry Goodkind explores the same idea in his sword of truth series, though has the interesting point that it depends not on the actual! truth, but on what the sword wielder believes! to be the truth. Although Goodkind severely goes down hill for me as he goes on (indeed Ive not read any books after his eleventh), I did enjoy the first Sword of truth book, before the right wing preaching and sexism went too far, partly for the business of the sword and the idea of truth behind it. Then again Goodkind is pure standard magic fantasy, so no marks for interest
there, albeit he doesnt plum the depths of rp class architypes. Lastly,as a humerous notion, why is the main wizard in Brooks books called Alanon? isnt that the short form of Alcoholics anonymous! whenever now I think about characters saying quick! we need to meet Alanon! or Alanon will save our lives! it makes me smile, is everyone in Brooks land a raging alkie? .URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156361#p156361
