Re: where should I use python difrint datatypes There are different data types because they have different performance characteristics, and because they also have semantic meaning.To start with the simplest: a tuple is immutable, meaning that you can't add values or change the values inside it. What this gets tuples is a saving in terms of size, because lists internally have to do some extra stuff to make mylist.append(5) fast and that extra stuff takes up memory. The primary uses for tuples are things like positions, where there's always 2 elements and you usually want to replace the position, or returning multiple values from functions, e.g.:def myfunc(): return 3, 4 a, b = myfunc()Is a tuple.I think lists are obvious: you have an ordered list of things, you want to be able to append to the end and sort it and stuff.But lists are very slow at two operations. Say we have a list of a billion numbers, and you want to know if something is in the list:5 in mylistPython has no choice but to check every single item inn the list. That's a billion checks.The other thing that is slow about lists is inserting data at the beginning. Why? Because lists are a big block of memory, inserting at the beginning of a billion item list means copying all the billion elements one index to the right so that you have space at the beginning for a new one. This is, again, a billion operations.Sets solve two problems. The first problem sets solve is that x in myset always takes the same amount of time no matter how big the set is. A billion items? No problem. Even for very small sets, like 20 items say, x in myset is faster. The second problem sets solve is that it's not possible to have two of the same item in the set, even if you insert twice. This leads to the following recipe:l = [1, 2, 3, 2, 4] s = set(l) l2 = list(s) l2.sort()At which point l2 = [1, 2, 3, 4] because the set deduplicated our items. There are a bunch of other uses for this, since it protects you from multiple items in the set, where you can just add some without checking first.Dicts are, well, dicts. Internally they're a kind of set, where each item in the set also has a value. That is, insertion and key lookup/x in mydict are all fast, but you also get a value back out.If you can not worry about ordering and you don't have duplicates, sets/dicts are usually much faster. You can create a character and just chat with folk about the happenings, but there's lots of dangers in the world, so it's advised to become skilled with some sort of weapon.This is a very good post, thank you. Re: The Jeopardy topic I admit, most of my experience with jeopardy has been with the Alexa game, and we play that chiefly because my lady is a huge fan, since while there are some interesting questions, a lot of them are just a little too! american centric (I'd say out of every day's twelve questions, at least four, sometimes five are about Us history, Us politics, Us specific tv network questions or Us sport, despite the ap being international).There was an attempted English version in the mid nineties, but it really didn't take off, and I only know about it because it showed before a great scifi series. going on the ap, some of the questions are interesting in the way they start with one thing and then another, but I'm afraid the "answer with a question", thing always strikes me as more a gymmic than a challenge, though I know it's the main part of the series. again, obviously it's different if you grow up with the show, my lady was quite sad when she heard about Alex Tribeck's death, and there are certainly English Quiz icons and Quiz shows not known in America (so sad Bruce Forsythe died in 17, so I appreciate how special jeopardy has been to a lot of people over the years, and likely if circumstances were different I'd probably feel the same, but as it stands, it's probably just not one that mnakes it outside the states quite as well. Also to those asking if you will be able to maintain blindness skills? Why would you? Sight is a superior sense to hearing etc in most aspects, at least based on the research I did. Those skills would be a backup and mostly obsolete if you had vision.And On grocerry delivery, I have had more annoying shit happen, like the person getting me 14! pounds of bananas instead of 14, and charging me for those, having rotting produce, spoiled meats, substantially different replacements, getting 1 of an item instead of 2, and being charged for the second. I basicly have to double check all my bags to see that I got everything and nothing is missing. You can get refunds for damaged items, and if you have an American Express card, that allows you to dispute charges successfully if you can't reach them or they refuse to refund charges. Re: So, sell me on Clock? All weapons have their advantages and disadvantages. Daggers are very good if you're fighting armored foes, provided you know how to use armor. They can armor chink. Swords have excelent damage output, and provide lots of parry bonuses, hafted weapons range through so many different damage types it's not even funny, polearms provide a dodge bonus against melee attacks, and lances fall under this category, which are the deadliest melee weapons you can get. Brawling is unique and provided you're in the right guilds can be just as deadly as any other weapon. whips have urumis and can proc trips and disarms, not to mention they can be used from ranged status and a dodge bonus. That being said, they all have their drawbacks as well. Daggers are awful to parry with, swords are mostly slashing, which is negated by armor, hafted weapons have poor parry bonuses and usually take both hands to wield, polearms damage output isn't the greatest, and their parry bonuses aren't the greatest, whips damage output is pathetic, etc. Just play around with different setups and you'll find something you like. To the question about raising in the game, it really depends. There's no way to raise skills without grinding, but, you don't need to have skills to be a fixture in the community. Mummers storytell, and if you're good at coming up with stories or performances, you can quickly see yourself being admired and with many friends. There aren't levels or anything like that. You can create a character and just chat with folk about the happenings, but there's lots of dangers in the world, so it's advised to become skilled with some sort of weapon. If it won't exactly give the system a huge speed boost, at least it can stop swapping as much to disk, which will be good. Unless you really need audio, WSL can help you get to know the linux filesystem and general utilities.I don't recommend dual booting. It's easy to mess up and when you do, you may have to reinstall windows as you could have inadvertently repartitioned. Then you'll have to edit your boot loader config to drop you into windows if nothing is pressed. While learning linux, it's probably best to be able to jump back and forth easily. But I wouldn't recommend dual booting unless you've first done disk partitioning manually and successfully first.Yes, I know about the ubuntu way of installing alongside windows, but that's such a kludgy mess that yeah, I'd stay away. That's like debating in bad faith 101. Obviously if the cure's not perfect and comes with weird side effects this is a different discussion, but that's what clinical trials are for. This discussion always goes the same way: as soon as someone points out all the advantages of sight and that being all conflicted about it is really silly, we change the definition of cure rather than just conceding the argument.This thing has so many side effects that it's useless, this thing only restores 1% of vision, whatever else, those are at best called treatments and at worst called failures. They aren't what is being debated every time anyone anywhere starts the cure discussion. "Under what circumstances can we cure blindness?" is an interesting discussion, sadly still an open question, and the one where "maybe neuroplasticity" or whatever is relevant. But trying to shift one discussion into the other to turn "I don't know if I want the cure because identity" or whatever into anything but a statement of ignorance, anxiety, or an ableist background isn't productive or helping our cause, in the same way that all the other things I've brought up here aren't productive and helping our cause. Closing your eyes when you've reached your limit seems simple enough until you account for the fact that vision is the most highly prioritized sense we have as humans. Then we get into speculative territory which wonders if one begins to start using vision, will they be able to maintain their blindness related skills? If not, will the person at least experience a smooth enough cross fade that the diminished blindness related skills follows after improved visual perceptivity. Just as when we lose vision over time, there will come a point when we must start adapting our navigational skills, I'm sure the same holds true for gaining vision. Except we're met with the challenge that what we get will likely come at once, and even if it doesn't, the rate of improvement is likely to be more rapid than the rate of decline in people who lose their vision. If it's a problem, just close your eyes when you don't need it. It won't be a problem, but if it is, the eyes still close. Everyone treats this like it just fundamentally rewrites your life the day you get it and suddenly o my god, have to learn how sighted people do everything immediately. No. It doesn't. It gives you the choice to see, you can use that as much or as little as you want. You can play videogames and work on learning to drive and enjoy movies and all that, just generally do whatever things you want to do with vision, then go straight back to using a screen reader or reading braille or using a cane or whatever else it is you're afraid is going to be taken away as soon as you can see, and slowly work on becoming as much or as little of a sighted person as you want to be for lack of a better way to put it.Also, irregardless of career, being sighted probably doubles your salary within the first couple years of being sighted, or even gets you a job in the first place. And this also applies very much to programmers, etc etc etc. I'm guessing you're another person in the "I've never had vision, what's the big deal" camp. But look at it this way: anything that increases choices without taking other choices away is good, and this one at least doubles the choices available to you, job, hobbies, any of that. Just, poof, doubled.If I recall you're young. At the moment you're in an environment where a lot of the blindness difficulties aren't hitting you. Even the countries that do terrible at blindness are very good at insulating kids from the sorts of frustrations this thread is about. When you turn 18, most of those things just shut down and go "enjoy the world". It'll hit you hard then. This is especially true in the U.S., if that's where you are. In the U.S., school gives you a lot of things no questions asked, even in the bad places. You can't get braille as an adult trying to do college for example, not unless you're super lucky and go to one of the very few schools in the U.S. that can do it. Travel becomes 2-3 hours one way for most people, or you pay $50+ per day for Uber or whatever. And so on.I remember your other thread about your parents, and I don't want to take away from that sucking, but even if they're the shittiest parents on the face of the earth, they're also free assistants. They're taking care of a lot of sighted stuff that blind people have trouble with, and replacing them as an adult is very expensive. I mean hell, just wait until you get your first paper-only bills. Or, here's a good one. You have to cash a check, your bank's app is inaccessible, and the value of the check costs less than getting Uber both ways. Some skills have spec requirements like rapidfire and volley requiring bow spec, or all the revolver thingy requires firearm spec. Then there's ripost...and a lot of blade related abilities. The hefty, 120 damages kill kinda weapon usually don't get specs because they're deadly by themselves. Re: So, sell me on Clock? Mining takes time to net you any real profit. Early game, you're really stuck either killing infested for riln, or foraging. I'd go with foraging personally, since a lot of the newbie hunting areas don't produce as much riln due to overkilling. You can also do your tasks, but they're pretty dangerous from what I remember. Alternatively, you can learn to hunt, skin, and sell pelts, but that's a lot of skills you have to juggle. You can practice stealth in the abandoned caravan till about 200 or so if I recall correctly. That should keep you busy. If you're wanting to go a stealthy route, you really want to pick up the light foot ability ASAP. It has some pretty low prerequirements, and it'll help you a ton in training and just being overall stealthier. First of all, I'd be very surprised if every single one of you on here who are actually real people and not bots haven't felt this way at least once in your life. I'd be skeptical if you told me that you haven't. I know I have, and sometimes it's harder to deal with than others. Certain external factors apart from the blindness angle can influence the way you feel. So, if you have a mild irritation about the way something is going in your life, and it's related to blindness, then you start to feel down for other reasons, it very well could culminate in a depressive episode.In the end, it's true that we'll just have to deal with it. For the minute though, give OP some space to get his feelings out. It can be quite cathartic and release a sense of mounting pressure. I know it has been for me in the past, and the most recent example is my post about wanting to do drugs. Before anyone even replied to it, I started feeling a little better just because I got the words out.I know that a lot of the user base are children and teens, and it's a bit much to expect them to get this, but just for your information, a better approach would be to come at this from a supportive angle rather than one of condemnation. Also, some of you are definitely old enough that these types of things should be well within your level of understanding.One more thing to add. I've seen much, much more whiny and self-entitled posts on here than OP's. Of those types of posts, they don't always get the type of backlash I'd expect. First of all, I'd be very surprised if every single one of you on here who are actually real people and not bots haven't felt this way at least once in your life. Certain external factors apart from the blindness angle can influence the way you feel. So, if you have a mild irritation about the way something is going in your life, and it's related to blindness, then you start to feel down for other reasons, it very well could culminate in a depressive episode.In the end, it's true that we'll just have to deal with it. For the minute though, give OP some space to get his feelings out. It can be quite cathartic and release a sense of mounting pressure. I know it has been for me in the past, and the most recent example is my post about wanting to do drugs. Before anyone even replied to it, I started feeling a little better just because I got the words out.I know that a lot of the user base are children and teens, and it's a bit much to expect them to get this, but just for your information, a better approach would be to come at this from a supportive angle rather than one of condemnation. My mom wants me to get one, but of course she does because she doesn't think that I should have a say in anything, but I don't know, honestly. It would be nice to drive, but A) I'm starting to come to terms with my blindness. It used to really smack me down, for days at a time. And I've just started working on that, and B) I don't know if it would be worth it to basically learn how to live again. I'm already going to have to do that because my family has taught me very little home/life skills, and I really don't want to have to again. Being able to drive and such would be nice, however. It's a hard choice.
