Re: The NER BBS, accessible gaming for all, now available

@gilevi Im kind of bummed. I installed your game and nothing seems to be output to the screen. I think this has to do with how things write to the screen. Im going to continue to look into this because it may effect games like Eamon working i.e. If basic doesnt send things to the screen properly, we may not get output via telnet. Sorry . You game was written well, but doesnt allow for output that can be captured by the bbs.To others, Ive installed several in game modules to LORD. Go to (o)ther places and explore around This basically adds more functions and places to visit in Lord. You can die or have your character impacted in negative ways as bad things can happen to you as you stray from the main path, but good things can happen as well. Also, I installed Clans, and Interbbs Game.BRE has b
een reset and will start on 25 February. Therea re multiple leagues to choose from, start from league 000, and move forward if you would like to play them. If we dont use some of the other leagues, well leave them, but league 000 is the one most used by others.Ive also fixed some issues with the bbs crashing unexpectedly. Before, if the bbs service crashed, it would stay crashed. NOw, the computer will poll occasionally to make sure that its running. If not, it will restart the service. Most importantly, have fun, and let me know if you have any questions.NoelURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166455#p166455

I just tried out the BRE InterBBS game, and it looks reeeally awesome. What I dont get about what you said though is, what will actually happen with the stuff we do now? Will it just vanish?@ner, something I found out is that if you loose connection, you have to wait a few minutes to reconnect, since the BBS doesnt seem to have port redirection capability.Oh, and one last thing, is it possible to program games for the BBS? Does it use a specialized language, or is it possible to make any console app work with a BBS in some way? It would be interesting to make basic games for the BBS to play when youre bored. Maybe InterBBS or even intraBBS would be difficult, but stuff like kannonskatapults or chain recation could also be fun.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165702#p165702

Re: The NER BBS, accessible gaming for all, now available

@guilevy Well, the reason why its taking a while if you lose connection is that the bbs takes a minute for some games to detect that your connection or carrier as it was in the modem world dies. Nothing to do with port redirection unfortunately.I had to get the BRE league set up and packets flowing before the reset. The things you do now will get sent to all the BBSs but it really wont matter since you are under protection for 200 turns to start so that you can build up your empire. This time is a trial time for you to do whatever and screw things up if you have to so that on the 21st the reset can happen and the 24th, we can start playing. There are programming libraries (open door is one of them) that have the proper calls and such to accomplish input output and user data. Thats what many doors were written in at the time. Im not sure where it can be found, Ill have to research that one. NoelU

A helper is a program you download and use on your own computer. The helper connects to the BBS and you work through the helper. With some helpers, it is an actual program you use. In the case of TWX, however, it is a background process, and you use your normal Telnet client to connect to TWX, and then use commands from within TWX to connect to the BBS and to TradeWars.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165684#p165684

Higher numbers are better for producing that resource, obviously.Im still experimenting with the game myself, and getting used to the map. @staidaddict I sent you an email with your info.To all: this might be helpful to you. If you go to the user list, found on the main menu either in the blind shell or the standard shell, you will find your user number. Mine is user 1. If your user name is long like @staindaddict, you can log in with your user number. His is 63. So he can either type in his user name, anyone can, or type in 63 for login and then enter in your password. This might save you some time and will ultimately be easier for some for sure.Hoep this helps some. Also, Ive connected the inter bbs league games of today. What you do in the next few days really wont mater as with Barren Realms Elite and Falcons Eye, you have protection turns which will overlap the reset day of 21 February so play around andsee what you think of the games. On the 21st the game will reset and then there will be a three day period where basically peo
le can decide within the leagues which system to join the game. This really doesnt apply to us because, at this point, we may not fill our slots too quickly, but if ou want a spot, sign on in that three day period so you can get started building at that point when the real game starts. I think you get about 10 days or 200 turns of protection in the Barren Realms Elite games, and a bit less on Falcons Eye. To recap, BRE is the game where you are trying to basically reconstruct after an apocalypse, and Falcons Eye is the medieval magic game. Both rely on strategy. In these league games, the goal is to band together on the NER BBS to try to compete among the 24 other systems, most of which will have 6 players. I only signed up fr three games because I wanted to keep it small, but if we need to, we can sign up for more if we need slots. Right now, we should just got used to the game. I *cannot* change anything in these ga
 mes.Hope all this helps.NoelURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165612#p165612

Re: The NER BBS, accessible gaming for all, now available

Hi all,Heres a small step by step guide for those who cant use telnet on windows 7:1. Open your ocntrol panel by pressing the windows key, tab, selecting the control panel option and clicking on it.2. Im not sure how the item is exactly called on English systems, but it should be something like programs and features. Look for that and click on it.3. Press the add or remove features button.4. Once the next dialog box pops up, look for the tree view. In older systems it might take a while to show up.5. Check the Telnet client check box inside the tree.6. Tab to the OK button. Click it.7. A progress dialog will appear and stay there for a while. Once it closes, close the other window (the control panel one).8. Hit Windows+r and type in telnet nerbbs.com without the quotes.9. A telnet window will appear and youll be automatically connected to the server.<
br />Extra notes:The telnet client doesnt seem to work for JAWS. I have 10.0 on a win7 32 bit system, I never really upgraded because I never use it. To move through the newest chunk of received text with NVDA use the revision cursor, which is activated by using standard navigation comands while holding down the capslock key on laptop keyboard layouts. In the desktop layout I think you have to mess with NumPad keys. You may have heard that MUDs are actually using a telnet system. That is true, but do not try to use a client like MUSHclient to log in to the NerBBS. Im not sure how all of this works, but telnet seems to be able to detect keypresses in the users computer apart from commands, and muds cant do that. MUSHclient is optimized for muds so aparently the direct keypress detection doesnt work, and that makes navigating menues a pain in the butt.Thats it, hope it works for all of you.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165461#p165461

Re: The NER BBS, accessible gaming for all, now available

@grryffindorHello, and to others, Im sorry Ive been awol. Ive been reading but unable to respond thanks to life . Also sorry for bbs being up and down a bit, still working out bugs and figuring out which version of the bbs software works best.Go Gryff, youre welcome to try JAWS, but I would recommend, if you must use JAWS, using versions 12 or earlier due to the way it handles terminal and telnet windows. If ou use JAWS 12 i.e install it, then you can press insert+f4, unload jaws, and then run jaws12 or earlier. This will cut down on the repeating that seems to creep in when users use Teraterm, and also, allow people to read things properly with the windows 7 telnet client. As detailed earlier in this thread, people have had some success using the stock telnet client with JAWS, but I would counter with the fact that at times
, automatic speaking will stop after several screens. I dont have screipts listed on my Wiki pages yet, but I will be working on that page this weekend and hope to have a more definitive guide for JAWS and other screen readers. If you use JAWS 12 or earlier, Tera Term with an easily installable script works fine. If you can stomach it, NVDA works best out of all screen readers with no customizataion at all of any terminal client. In my wiki at http://wiki.nerbbs.com, I talk about the terminals and their pluses and minuses. There has been some confusion with symbols and the fact that eloquence and other screen readers speak symbol when they see graphics presented by ansi. With Tera Term, you must go to the settings menu, then tcp/ip. Under terminal, type ansi into the edit box. Then click ok. NExt, go to the settings menu once again, and select fonts (I believe). Pick th
e font Terminal, and select OEM DOS as the character encoding. This will take the u umlauts and degree symbols away onscreen. If JAWS continues speaking the symbols, try earlier versions or switch to another emulator i.e. Windows telnet with an earlier version of JAWS.With NVDA, it is possible to completely mute all of the symbolS, and that is detailed in the Wiki.Im always available on twitter at @ner or at @nerbbs to answer any questions. I have no problem walking anyone through the system should you have problems.I will update this thread when the wiki si less scattered, I wrote it way too late one evening .@mordsith Stay away from those orcs if you can. Re: The NER BBS, accessible gaming for all, now available

Just a note, interbbs gaming is coming closer. The NER BBS is nw connected to the Battlenet Network which has only two games, Barren Realms Elite and Falcons Eye. Barren Realms Elite is a strategy game allowing resource building and diplomacy. Falcons Eye is a magical strategy game set in medieval times. In BRE, you fight with bombers, terrorists, and jets with nuclear missiles allowed as well; in Falcons Eye, you fight with magic and runes. There is a BRE game currently going locally, but by the weekend, there will be a league game with six spots to play with until the full game reset on the 21st of February (the game has been going for three months). Battlenet I think has 5 total leagues available, all with slightly differing settings, but for now, I think we will have 2 leagues for Barren Realms Elite, one with six spots and 1 with 4. Players can play any of the league games. These league games behave diffe
rently than Usurper, Lord, or any of the other local games you may have played. With these league games, the object is not to conquer the players on the NER BBS; the object is to work together as a team within your league of 6 or 4 to run covert operations, set up trade routes, and carry out interplanetary attacks. The game is pretty easy to pick up, and I cant wait for the interleague play. League coordinators have complete control of the games, settings, and user data, so if I have time, I plan to play one of the interbbs games as I dont get to play too much. Sysops are actually encouraged to play in these league games as theres no editors that we can use to fix user data so if you screw something up, I cant help you . Its been awhile since Ive played a full game and I hope you will join me so we can learn this thing to
gether. From what I can tell, there seem to be around 200 or so players in league 000, so it could be kind of crazy, but I think fun if you like that kind of thing. Ill update folks on how to get to the leagues when all games are in place..I hope to get joined up with a league for Clans and Legend of the Red Dragon among others, ut I wanted to get packets transferring properly before I got too far into things.Sorry Usurper buffs, there doesnt seem to be a way to play Usurper against other BBSs.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165514#p165514

Hi,@ner thanks for all of that. I noticed I do get 500 minutes per day . Im not sure on how to withdraw from the bank, all I can do is exchange credits for minutes. I had like 10m when I started to I exchanged all of them and I have 600 minutes banked but Im not sure on how to withdraw them, there doesnt seem to even be a menu there. By th way, I noticed I only have 50 logons per day. I normally keep logging on and off, and although I dont think Ill ever use up 50, I do think some of these limits, like the time, the logons and all those should be removed. If thisll all be free we shouldnt have limitted minutes. OK, maybe this is still active because you made it that way because of server costs or something, but if you didnt, it really makes no sense to keep it there. Probably since people used dial-up connections for this i
t was hard as hell to keep the server active and all of this was made, but now, with high-speed broadband connections and such it really doesnt make sense to keep that active unless its still there for a reason nowadays. It makes me feel limited to have X minutes to play games, chat and have fun, even though I have 5 hours it still makes me feel weird. @guilevi when I exchanged credits for minutes in the bank I seemed to just get a time boost anyway, I was down to about 200 minutes but when I exchanged credits it went up to 500 again. Im guessing that 500 is the max amount of time that displays on the board, but if you finish that, you move on to your bank time, that would make sense, though practically since 500 minutes is close to 8 hours, so long as you bank credits occasionally your not likely to run out any time soon. What I am wondering with usurper is if there is a way to change race and class. When i began I assumed it had a similar remort option to legend of the green dragon (or red come to that), ie, once youve finished as one race/class combo you can restart as another, though 90 levels is a bit more than logd/lords 15 so will take much more time.Or is it that you need to have children and then play as one of them?I also suspect th
at 30 dayly fights is max settings, in the game. Btw, I googled usurper just for interests sake and I was very surprised to find out just how recent the last version is, middle of 2013. There was me thinking all of these bbs games were old wrellicks from way back when, when theyre actually still very much in development, that is cool and presents another interesting possibility for running dos titles.Actually since the developer of usurper according to http://www.usurper.info/ has done some pretty extensive server work for running games on a bbs, it might be worth asking him if he has any thoughts for how to run dos games or Eamon deluxe without risking other users monkeying with peoples characters. It would be pretty awsome to see games like pile driver, fallthru, braminar, drone and maybe even world of legends all available online to play so easily.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165246#p165246

Re: The NER BBS, accessible gaming for all, now available

@Szelli, well 32 bit should run the thing fine without trouble. As I said on xp I just hit r for run in the start menue, type telnet that is t e l n e t, then a terminal window appears, ie a screen window like the old dos console where you must type on a command line.I then it o and telnet asks what I want to connect to, so I type nerbbs.com, ie n e r b b s dot c o m.After that it was just a matter of choosing an account name and password then everything was fine.. hth, though if anything works differently on windows 7 Im sure someone here will be able to give more specific advice.Well usurper is going better. Im now level 9 and have actually used up all my fights today which is pretty awsome. and if levels go this quickly then it is possible you do level the same way logd does. The only thing that im now having trouble with is the equip system. I can go into the armor and we
apons shop and ask for the best, for my gold, but while I can still buy a weapon with another equipped, if I try that with armor the armorer says you are already fully equipped this would be fine if there was an option to quickly remove all armor, but the removal process seems pretty slow, indeed the inventory management is a little whacky since i hit I in the status screen, I then have to hit s for stop using, then however instead of giving me a list of what Im using the game continually tells me to press question mark for list, even if I know the number of the item I want to stop wearing and type it I still have to press the question mark. So removing armor bit by bit is a pest. I wonder if there is a option that I am missing? I also found a map to the ice caves, which instructed me to press I in the dungeon but then I get a message telling me the author didnt implement that area. I presume the
version of usurper we have running is the latest build? ie, the one from last year. Lastly, if people dont mind another question, how do the quests and quest masters work, I dont seem to be getting anything out of those. I will say Usurper actually seems a bit more complex than Logd and Ill play it for a bit just to see where things go.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165320#p165320

Re: The NER BBS, accessible gaming for all, now available

I have some explanations about the limited time/logins thing. As you suspected, that is a holdover from the old time BBS days. And in those days, if you were very lucky, you had a BBS you could call that had multiple phone lines. But most of them just had one phone line. That meant that there could be exactly one person on the system at a time, not counting the sysop who might be sitting at the physical computer running the board. Naturally, time limits were put in place so one user couldnt hog up the system all day/night long and keep everyone else from connecting. Remember, if youre on any of these systems, anyone else who calls in is going to be frustrated to no end, getting busy signal after busy signal after busy signal.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165333#p165333

Re: The NER BBS, accessible gaming for all, now available

Well ner, Id be happy to contribute some cash to get more games, and 10 usd isnt really too bad at all, plus lunatix is rather fun. My thing with barren lands is Ive tried games like that hosted on browsers fairly often from reign to cyber nations to tribal wars and Ive just never personally found the politics side of things interested me as muchIndeed up until playing Aprones castaways I could never see the point of such games, however it was the need in castaways to keep changing stratogy, reassigning jobs according to what your doing and exploring the environment and conquering its challenges that I found extremely appealing, but thats unfortunately not an aspect of stratogy or resource management Ive seen in any of the online games Ive tried, and unfortunately other than castaways there isnt really anything in that style of game accessible as yet, still if you upload cla
ns Ill gladly give it a try, indeed Ill try pretty much anything you feel like sticking up, and dont worry about not playing yourself, that seems a little unfair to me for all I can understand the logic behind it. One question I have wondered, is that since telnet clients can be used on post xp windows, would there be any way to run any of the older dos games such as drone, braminar and fallthru, or perhaps even Eamon deluxe though I suspect that one could be more complicated, although I do know some of the classic original apple ii eamon games were run on bbs in the past. It would be a great way to make these playable on post xp windows without the need to muck about with virtual machines or other such shenanigans since microsoft have messed up compatibility. If there is some perfectly good technical reason why this isnt possible fair enough.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165120#p165120

Yep, that is the way with logd style games, banking is everything. well Ive tried trade wars but I dont know if Ive missed something since it seems Im running into trouble with the planet menue, as Im not sure which number is what and which number actually means how many of a given resource are on the planet as opposed to various other things, since while I thought it had resources when I tried the take individually option I was told there werent any of that resource. I also found a star port just next to the planet but Im not exactly sure whether the prices there are good or not, do you need to just fly around and compare prices? or is there a way of finding out more directly that Im missing.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165125#p165125

Re: The NER BBS, accessible gaming for all, now available

Hey @darkFirst, about Eamon, I have thought about that. The only thing and youll have to tell me what you think here, is that you wouldnt necessarily be able to save your progress in games ... well, you could save your progress but you would be able to access other players saved games (if Im remembering correctly). The way bs games work is that you play as you were sitting at my computer. I think possibly, well Id think actually probably I could get it to work and yes, I think it would be a good idea. What do you think about the saved game issue? I have a post XP system, but I can run these dos games through Synchronets special dos executor, so it should be possible if it writes directly to the screen. I also want to run the old 1970s star trek game which Im pretty sure can be done.I find the Lunatix authors email address and see if he answers before we do anything.About Trade Wars,
I can help you there. Your planet should have iron ore, fuel, and organics if I remember correctly. YOu have to first go from Terra (believe thats sector 1) to your planet to take colonists so that they can get the resources from your planet. This is possible right off, but what I would do is go around the ports (note your home planet sector) and see if you can find a port pair. That is, a pair of ports that sells one thing at a low price and buys something the other port neighboring has at a higher price. ONce you do that port pair buying and selling, thed you should be able to build up your ship to add cargo holds so you can carry more. Then it becomes more profitable to get colonists and ferry them to your plannet. Sound repetitive? Yes, it is, and theres a reason. In trade wars, there are programs called trade wars helpers which basically monitor output, map your known universe, and make repetitive tasks more easy.
; For instance, if you find a really good port pair where organics is selling at 500 but you buy it at the port that is selling at 100, you can tell your helper to go ack and forth. Trade wars helpers are encouraged and allowed, so dont worry, this is not cheating. This is why we only have a certain number of turns per day. The same can occur with colonization. If you want to get 1 people to your planet, you can have the helper help you out and make those repetitive moves. Ultimately, you would run the helper (for your tradewars session) rather than running your terminal emulator to get into the bbs and go into tradewars. You can actually get into tradewars without logging onto the bbs but you must rlogin into port 2002 with a username of your full name for this to work. Helpers can make life easier because theyll keep track of port prices, where your fighres are, that kind of thing. One of the free helpers is twx proxy
, and another one is shareare and is called Swath. Swath has a jaws mode for screen reader users and the author is very willing to help blind users get things working.Does this answer your question, in a roundabout way Im sorry ?NerURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165137#p165137

Re: The NER BBS, accessible gaming for all, now available

Hi Ner. Well regarding lunatix that would be nice. With eamon deluxe it would be great to have a perminant host so that people could play the game. In terms of save games, well the way Eamon deluxe works is characters that users create are saved to the database, or you can just use one of the default edx characters, so there wouldnt particularly be a problem there as even if someone else did play with your character you could just use the in built character editer to restore anyway, it is also quite possible that if you asked Frank Black the Eamon deluxe maintainer hed be willing to add a password function to safe gard peoples characters, since I weve been trying to solve this problem of how people can run edx without dosbox for ages. Other dos games like Fallthru might be a bit more difficult to maintain without people mucking about with character files, though I think the risk of that is probably wo
rth having the games available to everyone to play, assuming there are no other individual password options when the games are run that you can think of.With trade wars, well Ill worry about helpers when Ive worked out the game a little more, but I thought my planet started with colonists on it since Im pretty sure it has numbers in the colonists column. Perhaps if you could explain that chart it might be helpful.Perhaps if you could explain what those columns were that might help.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165139#p165139

Though I never played LOTRD, I have played the Hogwarts Live variant of Legend Of The Green Dragon back in the day for years! As there are so many Linux distros, not sure which one ya should base the instructions off of... It seems its better to play your games under Speakup screen reader, instead of using Orca, as it j
ust works much better under a console with Speakup than a terminal under Orca. Coming soon will be a separate thread on taking the plunge in to the Linux world, but Im digressing here...Keep up the wonderful work with this! Im known as Sunlight on NerBBS, and on SDF as well. Thanks for bringing BBS back to the world for everyone to enjoy!PS. Im only 29 years old, and didnt get to experience BBS, nor Gopher back in its heyday. @Dark,I can help with the particular Trade Wars screen youre wondering about. The planet has a chart showing how many colonists you have working to produce each product. The order of columns is product name, total number of colonists working to produce that product, number of colonists required to produce 1 of that product per day, (note that youll want to make sure your colonists are multiples of this number to get multiple units of the product), how much you have on the planet, how much you have on the ship, and what the planets maximum storage for that product is.Does that help explain things a bi more?Best,Zack.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165146#p165146

@Zcline thanks for that, that is what I wanted to know and well explains why I am having trouble with that particular screen since I thought that the multiples of colonists were ones you actually had on the planet.Ironically Ive been playing Core exiles all day (just found some great asteroid fiels for my advanced refiner), which could be thought of as at least a trade wars successor, so itll be nice to give the original a go.Ill try it again and see how I get on. @Trenton, itd be great to have eamon more available. Ive had loads of fun with eamon deluxe, indeed only a brief glance at the news letters and wiki will show my input, and I think its a real shame when this sort of work and access is going into such a great series of textual rpgs that microsoft have decided to bugger things up in the way they have meaning people cant play them, indeed its quite ironic that back when I first disc
overed Eamon deluxe in 2008 and it took a little wangling to get around some inconveniences such as the 40 character display, annoying screen refresh and highlighted character editer that most people could run the thing, but now that Frank is back and seriously working on Eamon deluxe including some really awsome access fixes a lot of people have moved onto the more modern, crappier windows versions that cant run the game natively.this is why a fix to play on modern windows such as running on telnet would be great, especially since Eamon deluxe is still being worked on both in terms of ports of the classic original games and in terms of new ones being written for the system.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165190#p165190

@Trenton and @dark Great to have you guys playing! the more we have playing, the better!About Eamon, Ill give Frank an email and see if we can work something out even if I can help him port to something like doorway which runs bs style doors by username. I think I would want to make sure that people really knew that if I did this, that their characters would *not* necessarily be safe. I do know that its possible to default to vi mode, and that I can make happen upon launch. This is all definitely doable, and if you guys dont care about the character aspect, I have no problem attempting to make it happen. For the purpose of this bbs, I had to run Windows 7 32, because of the limitation fo Windows. Id love for others to have the ability to log on. Afte work, Ill have a look at implementing access. When its done, Ill let everyone know, and youll all have to determine if its a workab
le solution. Perhaps this is what we need to catalyze some more support and also get people more interested in figuring out how to circumvent the ansi graphics. Heres something, how would you all like playing eamon on your iphones? This will be possible with the correct emulator if in fact I can get the video to be intercepted to comm. The first version a textual main hall appeared in Eamon with all the same features as the graphical one was actually in Eamon deluxe in january for 2012.Frank has also been great about some other access fixes, often miner things like describing ascii art o
r the like, and has even modified some of the punctuation so that it speaks correctly (he downloaded a copy of Nvda and tested it out). So, the more access people can have to Eamon deluxe the better. Ironically Frank contacted me the other day to say hi, so I told him about this topic, but he is a busy fellow. An Iphone version would be great, I suspect an Iphone version would need some rather basic tweaking just to get the commands to work since even though Eamon has a great word recognition routine so that a command like open iron door can be abbreviated to op ir it could still be a little urksome having to constantly type those sorts of things in with the on screen keyboard and vo, and not everyone has an external keyboard with them (indeed though I own a bluetooth external keyboard its a bit large to fit in my shoulder bag so I dont carry it around with me).Wel
l as to playig games, the good news is usurper seems to be going better now, mostly because Ive got enough gold and armor to run with, Ive also seen some of the funnier options in the game. The inventory was giving me a little trouble, since it doesnt display what items you have or are using by default and you need to enter a question mark, but its fixed now. One thing I have been wondering in usurper is how to reply to a tell once you get one? or do you have to hit ctrl t and enter the other players name, particularly since all the npcs there keep asking me random stuff or giving random comments. Btw, is there a way to know who is an npc and who isnt? I dont want to go telling other human players I want to kiss them or kick their rears or something else .I think I need to sit down and read the
trade wars documentation, indeed if you have a link to the manual so I could read it through that would help (I know its available in the game but itd be nice to read through straight off, indeed if it were possible having the instruction manuals to games available in the nerbbs wiki might be handy, though I know the tradewars documentation and lots of other resources available on . Back then, since bbss had limited phone lines, system operators allowed people to bank time that they had left over so they could use time they had banked in case they ran out of time. @saras social circleHi Sara, I havent figured out how to remove the space from that wiki article, but what you need to do is paste in the string without the space and with the brackets. Also make sure to paste it in and then select that it is a regular _expression_. If you are missing some info when you telnet, I would suggest trying either the windows telnet, o installing syncterm. Im having issues building an easy installer for syncterm, but its coming. Until then, read the steps in the wiki for installing syncterm. Windows telnet seems t work ok with NVDA actually, better than I expected though if you want to go that route. @darkUsurper is a challenging game. What I would do is attack what you can as level 1, and bank what you get until you have enough money to upgrade your armor. Post questions on twitter (I hope to have a mailing list soon for nerbbs) which should allow you to ask others who play, and play a lot. Ixitilus has challenges much like Usurper. To work up to a game that may be more eas until you get the hang, I would play Legend of the Red Dragon as its easier.I dont play the games much that I have installed, mostly because sysops are generally discouraged from playing so users dont worry about cheating sysops. I do not cheat, but me playing a lot could cause user mistrust.@stewie leveling up happens with your master. If you have enough exp, you can level up with him. Once youre to level 2, you can go to the marketplace where you can train special skills based on your class.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165036#p165036

@Ner, well with those games since I cut my etth as it were with broswer games playing a hole bunch of Legend of the green dragon varients, which is the modern web browser based open source successor to Legend of the red dragon, Im avoiding that game for now, one reason Id like to work Usurper out since it seems different from some of the others like anbrosia or exitus, I just feel Im missing something with weapons and armor in the game since usualy in those sorts of games levelling is traight forward and I didnt have similar problems in either anbrosia or exitus. Regarding Lunatix, yes, a registration would be good. If you let us know how much it is likely to cost perhaps we can contribute some money twoards it, since Id myself much rather play a full game with an ending, --- plus the %10 extra gold sounded fun.For future games I remember Bladestorm mentioning one fantasy rpg called Arena of the ancients or someth
ing similar, perhaps you could track that down too. Btw, theres no need to reply individually in each post to everyone. the usual on board practice is just an at sign and the name, eg @ner, this is me addressing you, @Dan C, now I am talking to you dan. Re: The NER BBS, accessible gaming for all, now available

Hi Dark and all,Usurper is certainly a bit challenging at first. Hopefully I can help with some general advice however.Gold from kills and leveling up is obviously very valuable. You want to deposit it in the bank as soon as possible, if only because it will earn interest. That being said, if you ever find yourself completely out of money you can opt to quit at the beggars wall, which might get you some extra cash when nightly maintenance runs.Regarding weapons and armor, take advantage of the option to have the shopkeeper help you with them both. Armor in particular requires multiple items to be effective, but if you wear the best items you can afford you might find yourself able to shrug off a lot of damage. Use the Quick Heal option in battles, and buy healing potions when youre offered the chance to do so.Leveling and training in the martial a
rts are separate. You level by (v)isnt with your master from the main town, and train fancy moves in the marketplace. The latter are only used in a few instances, however, as far as Im aware, so its not as important to train them constantly. Speaking of levels, when you level up youll get a massive influx of gold, which is very helpful indeed. Now, if I may switch topics, surely Im not the only one whos interested in Trade Wars around here? Its multiplayer Smugglers basically, and awfully lonely if youre the only player. Also, Baron Realms Elite is a fun strategy game worth investigating.Hope this helps somewhat,Zack.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165088#p165088

Thanks Zack, I did gather some of that but not lots, though from the sound of it Im just experiencing the game as is. Regarding trade wars Im extremely interested in trying the game but wanted to get the hang of the system first, so thought Id start with something rp instead to get my feet wet as that is more like familiar ground to me. Anything particular about barren lands elite? to me it looks looked pretty much the same as most of that style of games that Ive seen on browsers, ie level up, get more stuff, all competition coming from external attacks, with the cheif interest in the game being the actions and relations to other players rather than an exploration of the world or confronting unexpected conflicts. As I said, it didnt look a bad game, but I very much prefer that sort of thing when its more Pve than pvp, since generally Im more interested in development, and changing str

Re: The NER BBS, accessible gaming for all, now available

@dark Sorry about the multiple messages. My issue was that I had several messages to respond to on different screens. Trust me, it wont happen again lest I get defenestrated.I cant speak on usurper as much though Im about to abolish my non-playing for fear that there wont necessarily be enough players to make the games fun. Its been way too long since Ive played. That being said, I can speak about baron realms elite. Yes, its pretty much a build and conquer game. BREs strength and its main stay really is the building and researching part of things, and most importantly to me that is, the interleague part of diplomacy. Baron Realms Elite is a game that you can complete pretty quickly, usually in a standard game, 8 turns per day. When you get to know the game, finishing a day can take maybe ten or fifteen minutes which is great for me being the busy guy I am . We will soon be joining BRE leagues. These leagues work by sending game packets to and from other BBS around the world. This allows the player to form alliances, attack other planets, perform recon, and generally take over. Theres no world exploration, but one can explore other bbss around the world by getting to know the players. It also takes time for packets to get exchanged, so the neat thing is that that element adds a bit of travel time to your actions off planet (bbs). One other game you might like which I havent added yet because I need to connect to another network is Clans. Clans is a medieval game that allows you to build your character in a village. Its very much based on inter-league play as well, but it allows you to travel to other villages. You issue a travel command, then, the next day, you log on to the bbs that hosts the vi
llage you travel to. This lets you get to know other systems because each system has a different personality, and different people . What Im noticing through this whole process of re-settin up this bulletin board is that though the BBS community is small, relatively, there are thousands of people who log on per day to bbss around the world who love t play games etc.Lunatixs registration cost is $10 whih is practically nothing compared to some. I was going to register it, but wasnt sure if people would like it, so I wanted to give it some time. Since youre a fan, Ill see what I can do . Logging on to the BBS is totally free, but anyone who enjoys games, traditionally in BBS lore, sends a few bucks to the system operator so th
at games can be registered. This is *not* necessary or compulsory.Hope this helps.NERURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=165111#p165111

Re: The NER BBS, accessible gaming for all, now available

Hi Ner. This is indeed cool. Ive connected with Telnet, and with supernova it works fine, since even if it doesnt read the auto console window Sns virtual curser is more than up to the task, indeed while I havent particularly played any bbs games before, I have played a fair few dos ones (one reason I still use xp). Oh, and turning down the punctuation level in Suernova is a matter of course and fairly easy to do, indeed I regularly customize my punctuation levels anyway since when reading directly on a continuous read I dont particularly like to here about everyones punctuation. One question however. I decided to start with usurper for interestss sake, however I managed to die in my first fight and now dont have any gold. The game tells me I should trane, but I cant find where to do that and going into the dungeons just gets me killed again, any thoughts? Also btw, while ther
es nothing wrong with quoting everyone in reply its not really necessary, and indeed can be a little cumbersome to read posts twice, Id personally suggest you just either use the reply button at the bottom of the thread or use the quick reply box. If you want to indicate whom your addressing its only necessary to use their name perhaps with an at sign eg @nerr, Im addressing you directly now. Not a big deal I just thought Id mention it since you are using the quote a lot.Ill look forward to trying out some of the other games.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=164687#p164687

Re: The NER BBS, accessible gaming for all, now available

hi I am using putty as a telnet client and I have configured in my speach dictionarry that the pattern should be left out. do I need to include the brackets and the space? and sometimes on telnet, small bits of text are left out which means I cant really play normally because sometimes I cant see choices.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=164715#p164715
