[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Audio quality of Transporter Re the Sonos

2006-11-29 Thread atbhat

Hi folks,
I was just asked about the audio quality of the Sonos system relative
to the Transporter. My answer was that from the little I can see on
the Sonos web site the Transporter seems to have made a stronger effort
for audiophile sound.
On my part it is mostly a guess. I have not listened to the Sonos.
If anyone has any actual listening or better understanding of their
specs I would appreciate your opinions.
By the way they sure have a nice remote.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Speaker terminal contact cleaner

2006-11-29 Thread jmourik

Currently I've got my speakers hooked up with unterminated 10-gauge
5T00UP (from Blue Jeans:
http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/speaker/index.htm). I was too lazy
to put on bananas and figured unterminated might give a better contact
anyway.
Is there some kind of contact cleaner I can use to keep the contact
points, both on speaker and amp side, clean and unoxidated? Or can I
just schpritz it with some trusty old wd40?
If you have some suggestion, could you tell me where you got it, or
where I can get it in the USA (if you know, of course) please?

Thanks, jan

Congratulations. Welcome to the Rotel club. Just a few questions.

Are you using the Denon as a pre-amp? Should be interesting to compare
that to the Rotel RC-1070 pre-amp.

Have you decided on the SB3 or transporter yet?

I use Caig Deoxit, which is American. They do a 'technician's survival

You might also like to try a contact enhancer, such as Walker's. WD40
is likely to be an insulator, so probably not the plan ;)

One of the problems of revealing speakers is that they really do
respond to the $$$ that you spend further up the chain... Welcome to

I would recommend that you get something considerably better than a
stock SB3 for that system - you'll need to mod and/or DAC it, or get a

I'd recommend against WD-40 - oil isn't generally a very good
conductor, so while it may help remove some oxidation from the wires it
may also leave a non-conductive film behind that actually makes things
worse. I'd go with a product intended for electrical contact cleaning
(there are many).

2006-11-29 Thread sc53

I have the SB3 digital volume on MUTE. But when I disable the Benchmark
volume via the switch on the back, I get no sound at all out of
speakers. So I have to use the Variable setting on the Benchmark, turn
the Benchmark vol. all the way up, then use the vol. control on my Ayre
integrated amp. I don't know if this is ideal but I can't seem to
disable the Benchmark vol. control without losing all sound. ARe there
two volume settings on the SB3? Last night as I was cycling through my
set-up on the SB3 again, I noticed another volume option and that one
was turned all the way up. Was that the analog volume? The digital
volume still says MUTE.

Perhaps there are some modders out there doing that, but I (in my

On the other hand, I wouldnt claim a modder is full of BS simply because
all he could say is he performed listening tests and found his mods
sounded better. I would take that as information, even if not very
compelling information. It would be more compelling if he could
substantiate it was done independently, with a variety of equipment, a
variety of listeners, there was some control for bias, listening was
done over an extended period of time, etc. Of course, most compelling
would be if said modder could report results of empirical listening
tests. Having a social and not physical science background I believe
there is a way to make non-instrumented testing empirical as well.
Unfortunately, I dont think we have found it yet.

It's especially not compelling when the modder in question uses such
things as Bybee filters.

There is an easy, empirical, non-intrumented way to do a test - simply
do a blind listening test. It's free, fast, and (if done properly)
just as reliable and convincing as using a scope. I've never (again,
my experience is limited) heard of a modder doing such a test to prove
his mod actually makes an improvement. The test should first
demonstrate that there is a difference and then - *still blind* - ask
which source the listeners prefer.

This is comparing $1800 worth of stuff (SB3 + BB) to $1700 worth of
stuff (Transporter less the free SB3). The Transporter has more
controls, displays, and functionality, plus a DAC. Guess what you
should buy if you don't alrady have an Apogee Big Ben?

The Transporter digital out sounded easily better than the stand-alone

In Player Settings|Audio there is a digital volume control, and preamp
volume control.

Preamp volume control only affects the analog output, so setting it to
63 (dB attenuation) will mute the internal DAC.

The digital volume control is the dropdown where you can select fixed
or variable output. I use mine with an external DAC on variable, and
for critical listening just turn the volume to max which is essentially
the same as using the fixed output setting.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: HiFi System needed to show difference: SB3, TP

2006-11-29 Thread Impeller

I've just spoken to someone from Rayleigh Hi-Fi and we're going this
Friday. :)

They don't tend to deal with Rotel anymore - apparently, although the
equipment was good, their customer service was terrible, and customers
were left waiting for items.

They like the Arcam A70 amplifier a lot at the moment - more than I was
intending to spend at £500, but we'll have a listen anyway.

Regarding speakers, he mentioned Rega (R1 I presume from a little
Googling), Arcam Alto and Rega (some of which are, again, over our
budget, but hey... I can always say 'no'. Right?).

Thanks for your help so far - will bear it all in mind when visiting

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] BolderSB2/UltimatePS V TP

2006-11-29 Thread tomjtx

I've spent almost a week now with the BolderSB2?PS Let me call it the B2
for short,OK?

I am very impressed with what Wayne has done with what was originally a
300.00 SB2. Although the cost of this set up matches or exceeds the cost
of the TP.

I hooked up the B2 into input 2 and set that input to invert phase per
Wayne's instructions. I used a spl to match sound levels. I spent a day
listeninng only to the B2 to do brain burn in OK, to familiarize
myself to it's sound.

BTW if anyone flames me over this comparison I KNOW WHERE YOU
LIVE!! :-)
I also know what you did last summer.

The B2 sounds great, I think it's a significant improvement over the
stock SB3.
The second day I did some informal blind switching. eg. had a friend
switch back and forth on the pre. I think I would likely not do well on
an ABX. The differences are quite subtle to my ear.

In sighted comparisons I would listen to piece long enough to
:memorize the sound and then listen to the other unit.
I want to stress that tis comparison is completely subjective and I did
what I would normally do to decide on a component purchase.
Some times a difference s so great it's easy to make a decision. That's
not the case here, for me.

Finally I made myself listen to one unit only until I needed to
switch.

I did this several time to see which unit I subconsciously chose and
stayed with longer

The differences I hear in sighted longer term listening between the B2
and TP are:

Soundstage: no difference, both throw a wide and deep ss

Imaging : both are great

I would fail an ABX on those 2.

I think the B2 is a bit more laid back. It has less rythmic punch and
the bass is a bit less well articulated to my ears. But these
differences are VERY subtle

Both are excellent at capturing note decay and hall ambience.

I had 2 fears in doing this comparison:
1 tat the bolder would not stack up and I would have to offend a lot of
people.
2 the bolder would blow away the TP and I would have to buy one.

Neither of these fears materialized.

If i had the Bolder I would be very happy
I am also very happy with the TP.

I the end I found myself listening more to the TP. It has more of what
I want to hear.
But the 2 are SO close I could not say the TP is superior.
Someone else might easily prefer the Bolder.

I would love to audition a Bolder modded Tp. If Wayne can improve an SB
so much it would be interesting to hear what he does with the TP.

My problem is that for me , the TP is so good I that would have to hear
a modded TP before I would want it done to mine.

I want to reiterate that I could easily see how someone could prefer
either unit. They are both so good that we enter the realm of how many
angels can dance on the head of a pin

I am sorry to sound like a pansy ass stereophile reviewer :-)
But this is my honest opinion/
. If I thought one was significantly better than the other I would say
so.

I have watt/puppies/jeff rowland electronics, 2 dedicated 10 guage
lines, chang light speed, asc tube traps , room tunes on top, 8th nerve
adapt triangles, response seams, custom designed O brandy, Spanish
riojas, priorats, penedes and cali cabs , pinots, chards, full bown
linn, graham tone arm SF tube phono preamp, chassagne montrachet,
chateau margaux, 14 year old lexus(who can afford a new car after
Watts), dadario strings, Fredholm guitars and other ABSOLUTELY
necessary accessories for listening :-)

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Onkyo DAC vs. SB3's DAC?

2006-11-29 Thread byKnight

I'm not an audiophile, but I think this is the best place to find an
answer to my question...

I've been using my SB3 analog out to an 15-year-old Kenwood receiver
and been happy with that. That receiver just died and I picked up an
Onkyo TX-SR304 to replace it. I was considering using the coaxial
digital out from the SB3 to the Onkyo.

I've already searched the forums and found lots of good information,
enough to tell me that I should at least try this.

But I'd like to know more abou the DAC that the Onkyo uses. All I can
find on the 'net or in the documentation is that the DAC is 192Khz,
24-bit. I can't find any other details.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows whether the DAC in the Onkyo might
be better than the DAC in my SB3. Or is the SB3's DAC so much more
superior that it wouldn't even be worth trying to go digital?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Personal Introductions: Please Make This a Sticky!

2006-11-29 Thread adamslim

Well I seem to be early on the list :)

My current set-up is in my signature. I'm not a professional at
anything music- or hi-fi-related, although did work in a high-end
dealer many years ago.

I'm here as I got an SB3 - I used the forum to find out stuff
pre-purchase, and quite liked some of the arguments we had. The
smaller community is nice compared to some very large audio ones.

My audio philosophy is very much on the subjective side. I believe
that we have not found out everything we can measure, and that our ears
are more sensitive than any other measuring equipment. I don't believe
double-blind A-B testing is the be-all as I change into a werewolf the
third time I hear a song in a row, although it can be useful. I find
that I need to live with stuff for quite a while before deciding what I
really think.

I subscribe fully to the low power single-ended triode valve amp plus
high-efficiency speaker route - I just prefer the sound - it sounds
more like real music to me. My system sounds incredibly good and I
don't envisage a change to the CD/amp/speakers for many years. I found
the stock SB3 lacking, but it's getting OK now with an external DAC; I
may do more tweaking.

I listen mostly to classical, folk and world music. I go to about one
classical/opera concert a week, and see folk or world music about 5-10
times a year. I spend much more on live music than on recorded/hi-fi!

Finally I love having equipment that is named after me. Sean should
give me a Transporter just so I can have another Slim device remote :)

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Onkyo DAC vs. SB3's DAC?

2006-11-29 Thread Pale Blue Ego

The short answer is to try both connections and trust your ears.

The long answer is:
Some receivers digitize all the analog signals; this allows the
receiver to perform various digital processing. If this is the case,
then you have a situation where the SB3 DAC is used to decode to
analog, then the Onkyo ADC digitizes the analog signal, and finally the
Onkyo DAC decodes to analog again. If this is happening, then the
straight digital connection will likely sound much better, even if the
Onkyo DAC is not as good as the SB3 DAC.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Personal Introductions: Please Make This a Sticky!

2006-11-29 Thread highdudgeon

Why Highdudgeon?

Really, because I love opera and it is a wonderfully archaic word.
Think of Wotan skulking across the sage, dragging a spear, wearing a
hat with pointy horns, and actually trying to be serious and indignant.
Anyway, it is a word I like.

My name is George. As a disclaimer, I am very pround to be a Slim
Devices retailer.

My immediate plans, in fact, are to carry this business to Europe and
to help place SD products with high-end dealers in central and southern
Europe. I am moving to Italy (the Venetto) with my family, where my
wife will practice medicine at a hospital in Vicenza, some 45 miles
from Venice. We have already been there this fall on a house-hunting
mission and I had a wonderful time demonstrating the Transporter on a
system that included Sonus Faber Stradivarius speakers. Awesome.

I am in my early forties. My educational background is in history and
physics, at the graduate level, but fortune (in the sense of accident)
led my to the IT industry in my lates 20s. This allowed me to upgrade
my first serious system -- on a college student's budget -- which
consisted of a Thorens 'table, NAD integrated amp, Nakamichi tape deck
(remember those?), and BW bookshelf speakers. The next move up was to
an ARC D-100 amp, ARC SP9 Mk II preamp (marvelous device), I suddenly
can't remember the CD player, and Canton speakers.

I've been interested in audio from an early age, being an avid music
collector, musician, and lover of live music. I had been exposed to
some excellent systems in my youth. My bought my first system with
savings from a summer job after my freshman year in college. From
there, it was a slippery slope.

Tubes (Quad, ARC, McIntosh, Cary), solid state (Plinius, NAD, ARC,
McIntosh, Bel Canto -- twice -- Nuforce, Bryston, Carver, and probably
a few others); electrostatics, floorstanders, monitors; CD players,
universal players, SB3, Transporter. Expensive cables (Acoustic Zen
Satoris, Oval 9's,s etc.) and inexpensive cables (Blue Jeans Cables
now, and Apogee Wyde Eyed for digital...I guess that's not so cheap).
EQ devices (Rane, Behringer, Z-Systems). Various DACs.

Probably the most expensive system I have had in my house was the
following: Harbeth Monitor 40s (incidentally, among the handful of very
best amps I have ever heard, at any price), McIntosh MC-501s (a vanity
purchase; I traded down); Squeeze Box 3 and Lavry DA10.

Because of our move, large speakers are not an option -- my new room is
too small. I have downgraded to Harbeth Monitor 30s, backed up by the
same ACI Force subs. The subs are in the corders and the speakers are
set up per Allison rules. I am running a Transporter directly into a
paid of Bel Canto Ref 1000. The Bel Cantos replaced the Nuforces...I
just had too many issues with that company and have had problems with
the things. The BC's are probably 99% as good as any amp needs to be.
They're up there with the MC-402. The MC-402 sounds exactly like the
MC-501s. Stereophile compared the MC-501s to $30K+ Halcros as being
pretty much the same. Why a switching amp? Because they are small and
runn on US and European voltage. Ditto for the Transporter! Plug for
Audio Concepts: they will retrofit the amps on my subs for 220/240 for
free.

Anyway, this is hardly the best system on the planet and, thanks to
the very wonderful but admittedly small monitors, it lacks the body of
a system with true full-range speakers (of comparable quality, of
course).

Audio philosophy:

My rule of thumb is to spend more money on tickets to live music and on
CDs than I do home audio. To begin with, I have two small children and,
quite honestly, my listening time at home is limited (somehow, they have
yet to damage anything...that amazes me every day).

Having gone through as much equipment as I have, knowing as my
audiophiles as I do, and having a background in the sciences (I was
even managing editor of a psychology journal whilst in grad
school...managing as in I did all the dirty work for the academic
editor) leads me to believe in the value of double-blind testing. You
need to work with one or more friends or family members to do this, of
course. Ideally, you should have a few listeners, too, but that is not
necessary. I don't do this all the time, of course, but it is fun to
do. Educational, too. On the other hand, I am very much a
subjectivist, too. This is about enjoyment, right? I really dig and
believe in fine solid state amps for their accuracy. However, I have a
pair of McIntosh MC-275s. They are NOT on the same level of accuracy as
an SS amp and you can immediately hear this. They are wonderfully warm
and rich, though, and I love them for that. My reasons are purely
emotional.

Above all, my philosophy is simply to have fun, enjoy the hobby, and
remember that it is all about enjoying music. That is why I enjoy the
Sb3 and Transporter so much and why I believe in Slim Devices. Their
products heighten my ability to

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Personal Introductions: Please Make This a Sticky!

2006-11-29 Thread atkinsonrr

Hi, my name is Rob, and I'm an alcho er audiophile. I played trumpet
for a long time, and for the past year or two have been dabbling in
guitar, but I wouldnt call myself a musician. I got my start listening
to LPs of Cream or Pink Floyd or Clapton, in a garage with a bunch of
other high schoolers. Solder smoke mixed with other smoke, wafted
along on air vibrated by the best stereo in town, thanks to my geeky
best friend. He was always building some Heathkit thing or another.
Later tended equipment and did the mix for a couple of minor recording
bands. This got me fascinated with how an amp or PA might have a
particular emotional impact and why. Thats what drives me in audio. I
think of it as the intersection of the technological with the
psychological. It lends itself to a sort of endless noble quest.

Once I got out of college and grad school, I finally had enough money
to buy a decent rig: Magnepan II's and Audio Research electronics.
Since then I've owned alot of different things. In speakers: Klipsch
Cornwalls, Quad 989s, Spendor monitors, Quad ESLs, Martin Logan Sequel
IIs, Carver Amazings, a pair of small Maggies, Advent Large, JSE
Infinite Slope, Mordaunt-Short monitors. My current main speakers
are a pair of Vandersteen 5As. In electronics I have had a variety as
well: Home-built Tripath Digitals, McIntosh both classic and new,
Classe, EAR 859, various Audio Research, Conrad-Johnson. When I get
back to Montana I will be rotating out McIntosh and putting in
Quicksilver mono-blocks. Why am I now involved with Slim Devices? I
think its the future. Once you use hard-drive based audio its hard not
to think the days of discs are numbered.

My philosophy in audio is probably a bit different. I have given up
trying to find accuracy or fidelity to live music. I am just in it for
the emotional high that a great system playing great music can bring.
And over the years, I have come to the conclusion there are many ways
to get there. In fact, I often have three systems set up. So when I
get back to Montana, I plan on setting up a couple of other rigs in
addition to the Vandersteen-Quicksilver system that will be fed via
Transporter. Quad ESLs and a pair of ancient tube monos will be fed by
an SB3 in the bedroom. In the office I plan on setting up Spendors with
a Tripath digital amp fed from the computer via USB DAC.

As for the objective-subjective debate. I can remember a time before
Total Harmonic Distortion was used and before anyone had heard of
this thing called jitter. So I dont think measurements via
instruments are anywhere near close to comprehensively describing audio
reality. Nor do I think ABX testing is the holy grail. Its my
experience that it takes time to really hear and appreciate. I readily
embrace the fact that there is a big psychological, perceptual component
and I'm not sure how you control for all that without destroying what
you are trying to measure. But, being schooled in the social sciences,
I know there are ways to tease out objective measures for that which is
wholistic and subjective. If and when that happens, we can all live in
peace, as the subjective and the objective will have been reconciled.

I think it could also be what we get used to. I've had the TP for over
a month and really like what it does. I understand why the mag. writers
live with a component for 6 months before reviewing.

I could easily be happy with either one. There were times I prefered

I listen a lot to vinyl (Full blown Linn Graham etc.).

I hear analogue elements in both the Bolder and TP.

I really want to hear a modded TP after this, which I truly mean as a
compliment to Wayne.
I also respect the fact Wayne hasn't advertised TP mods the day the TP
was released like some of the modders out there. he sems to be taking

This has been fun and I'm not finished. I'll try the Bolder straight to

Yes, please provide real data supporting any of the above!

In my eyes, you've done quite a few entries in that list to move from
the level of performance of the SB to the TP, including the quality
components swap you dismissed (by changing your DAC chip to the
'miracle' DAC).

Also, I think it only fair to point out that Wayne made no comment
whatsoever on what the modifications to the Transporter would do, I
asked him many months ago if he could do anything with the Transporter
and he said he would take a look at it, mine's been gathering dust in
his workshop for several months as he's been very busy with other work
(hence the reason the 30 day trial return wasn't of interest, it's long
gone). Truth be told, I don't think Wayne has much interest in modifying
the Transporter, it's all surface mount stuff which is a pain to work
with. From the user's point of view, modifying equipment that uses SMD
has a low value/performance ratio due to the labour costs for the mod,
(I experienced that when I had my Meridian G98 modified,
www.meridianunplugged.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=70#10).

I've spent a lot of time and effort trying to get a PC based music
solution to match the quality of the best CD players, it's not easy.
Jitter buster's like the Big Ben and Meridian 518 do a good job but as
the resolution of your system improves the drawbacks of these
approaches becomes audible (I commented on it in this thread,
www.meridianunplugged.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=6;t=000945#02).
When I was a young man, electonics was my trade, and even though it's
been 20 years since I moved from hardware to software I still find my
electronics background a hindrince when it comes to audio, not
everything that can be heard is visible on a 'scope or a meter; for
example, my mains leads have a Furutech FI-25 gold plug at one end and
Oyaide C-046 IEC connector on the other. After audioning the various
permuations of plugs and sockets from Furutech and Oyaide Gold-Gold,
Gold-Rhodium, Rhodium/Silver/Bronze-Gold etc I found that in my
system the Furutech Gold plugs and IEC gave me the best soundstage and
dynamics and frequency response that I like but at the expense of a
'gritty', 'splashy' sound and so compromised on the FI-25/C-046
combination. That's just the power cables, my power conditioner has
different type of power receptacles, different materials match
different equipment, what works for the CD player doesn't necessarily
work as well for the amps.

At this point I suspect that a few of you think I've lost the plot but
if you add up all the small improvements from each tweak the end result
is quite marked. For example, I used to use squash balls under all my
equipment (42 of them under the Wadia alone to take the weight!), which
sit on ClearAudio RDC Super Postion Platform shelves which sit on Mana
reference tables, which sit on 6 Mana Soundstages. I tried using
Stillpoints in favour of the squashballs but found that I didn't like
the shift in frequency response, StillPoints are a little light in the
base compared to squashballs although they have a more open sound and
don't affect the dynamics of the leading edge of transients.
Squashballs unfortunately do affect the leading edge and remove some of
the 'attack' of the leading edge and do smear the upper bass, however,
I found that by using the Stillpoints with 4 squashballs I got the best
of both worlds with only a small change in the frequency response which
I was ables to get back by substituting a different mains cable to the
CD player.

Also, Bybees get a rough-ride on this forum when they can have a
dramatic effect on the your system removing the noise and graininess
from the music. Used in combination with ERS cloth they can transorm
the sound of your kit. Too many people spend time dismissing items
based on the markeding guff instead of trying them out for themselves
and getting real-world experience, I love watching the look on the
faces of non-beliievers when they come round and hear my system, one of
my favourite tricks is to switch the digital cable between the Transport
and DAC section of the Wadia (a neat little tweak, the external
connection sounds better than the internal connection) and watch while
they try and figure out how changing a DIGITAL cable can change the
sound quality.

Anyway, enough of the waffle, I've had an email from somebody offering
to let me hear a Transporter so I've taken up the offer. Thanks for
your comments guys, if anybody's interested in hearing how it compares
let me know.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Personal Transporter vs decent(ish) CD Player setup

2006-11-29 Thread cdmein

Hello all.

Looking at the posts about the new Transporter I thought I would add my
experience (so far) to the mix.

I bought the Transporter in the end because I had heard only good
things about the SB and I wanted a network player so that I could avoid
my 1 year old daughter using my CD collection as chew toys and also use
Internet radio (instead of buying a tuner/digital radio box). I also
didn't want to have a worse listening experience than that I already
had on my system:

Arcam CD82T CD Player
Niam 3i Amp
Kef Q5 Speakers

Initially I got the SB3 and, as I had all my other gear in a shipping
container from London, bought a NAD C320BEE amp and Wharfdale Dimond
9.1 bookcase speakers for the SB. Sounded fine and I really liked the
interface - I could see I would be rediscovering stuff I hadn't
listened to for ages. The Internet radio was excellent as well.

When the Transporter arrived the sound difference was obvious even on
that setup. I'm not great with the terminology but any music had more
clarity, you could pick out individual instruments better etc. There
was still quite a lots of sssy hissing in the vocals that I have been
told is an issue with the quality of the amplifier reproducing the
human s sound (lots of high pitched frequency variation evidently!).
Anyway the Transporter was producing the best sound that the
NAD/Wharfdale setup could handle basically. On to the other kit - I was
excited!

Plugging everything else in I played a CD to start off with that I had
listened to when I first bought the stereo - Aimee Mann - Lost in Space
on my CD player. After 3 months in a packing case I realised how much I
had missed the stereo. The tremour in Aimees voice could be clearly
heard, the instruments had great spacing and sounded dynamic. Trying
Jack Johnson the guitar on the first track could be heard in great
detail - the finger movements on the fret board could be picked up.
Everything sounded great.

So onto the Transporter, plug everything in (I did use slightly
different connectors although the same dealer supplied both and said
they were equivalent - I can't remember the details) and... wheres the
sound!?!!! Turn up the volume control settings (what is the softer
sound for by the way?) and everything sounded almost the same! After
switching around several times on the same track (Jack Johnson this
time) I could hear slight differences but only slight. The CD player
sounded a little more dynamic, the TRansporter slightly more laid back.
The Transporter had a very flat background where the CD player had a
slight echoy, roomy sound (like the recording studio background which I
must say I quite like). But really on my setup they were equivalent.
Blind testing with my wife listening confirmed that there wasn't much
between them.

Except of course the Transporter cost £1200, the CD player I got for
£450!

For me then the Transporter did provide a network player that matched
the performance of my CD player which was the main goal as I won't not
use it because it sounds worse. In the end I will use both I think.
Looks and feel and the like - I don't really care although I agree with
other things I have read about the buttons and nobs etc. - why have
them? I would have liked a better remote control or slightly larger
screens etc. The buttons will never get used unless the batteries run
flat on the remote and I haven't got spare ones to hand! The main point
for me though is that at £1200 I probably would have got a much better
listening experience by spending the same money on a pre-amp/power amp
combination (converting my old Naim 3i).

In summary then I would, if I had my time again, happily buy a
Transporter if I was going to avoid buying a good CD player altogether.
Otherwise I think you would get better value for money with a good (or
great) CD player and spending the change on a better amp/speaker
combination.

I do wonder if the Transporter does have a lot more performance in it
however but as I have blown all my cash on the Transporter it may be
many years before I find out! What do people using it on a really good
amplifier think?

Good listening anyway, Chris

I'll play. My name is - well, my name is what you see so no need to
explain that one :). I've been tracking the squeezebox for a while and
only got into it a month or so ago. Experience wise - I'm a bit of a
'muso' having played in many bands over the years. Not really an
audiophile - and tend to be a bit bewildered over discussions about
cables and DACs and power supply replacements etc. I do appreciate good
audio quality though, and have a fairly good studio environment that I
have spent a lot of time and money getting to my liking.

The thing that keeps me here though is the excellent design of the
Slimdevices devices... A really excellent way of listening to my music,
and has supplanted my CD collection. Really enjoying Squeezenetwork too
- Pandora is just excellent :).

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Personal Introductions: Please Make This a Sticky!

2006-11-29 Thread PhilNYC

Ok, I'll play!

My name is Phil, and I'm an audio dealer located in Northern NJ. My
screen name is PhilNYC because I used to live in NYC, and I didn't feel
like changing my name to PhilNJ on the dozen or so audio forums I've
participated on past and present.

I first started here on the SD forum as a happy SB2 customer. Became a
SD retailer when the Transporter was announced, because I anticipated
that it would be a network music server product that would finally
perform at a high end audio level, and it has not disappointed.

I'm what you call a home-based dealer; I operate my dealership out of
my home. I've been in business for about 4 years, and I only sell gear
that I want to own for myself. That said, I have over 1000sqft of
dedicated demo space, with 4 systems available for demo:

1 - Reference System: Focus Audio FS888 speakers, Blue Circle
BC3000mkII GzPZ preamp, BC206 hybrid amplifier, Dodson DA-218 DAC and
SD Transporter (also an Oracle CD1000 for folks who bring their own CDs
to listen to).

2 - Tube System: Focus Audio FS-78SE speakers, Cayin A70T tube
integrated amp, Bel Canto CD-1 cd player.

3 - AV System: Acoustic Zen Adagio speakers, Bel Canto ref1000
monoblock amps, Pre2 preamp, DAC3 DAC, modified Sony S7700 DVD player,
Panasonic 50 plasma.

4 - Office system: Focus Audio FS-68SE monitors, Bel Canto Pre3 preamp,
S300 amp, SD Squeezebox 2 driving Zhaolu 2.0 DAC.

Slimserver is running on my eMac, where I have 14 days worth of music
(so far) ripped to an external hard drive.

I'm an unoffical co-founder of a NYC-based audio club called the NY
Audio Rave. We use Audiocircle.com as our online home, and we have
meetings in peoples' homes once a month. Its via these meetings that
gives me the opportunity to hear far more gear and systems than I ever
thought possible, with gear shootouts being a focus of many of our
meetings.

I was a believer in the effects of power cords, interconnects,
vibration control devices, and other tweaks long before I became a
dealer. I do not believe that something needs to be expensive to be
good; I also do not believe that if something is expensive, it is
overpriced. I'm willing to try just about any tweak once, but do not
use many tweaks in my general audio/music-listening life. That said, I
think Machina Dynamica is full of sh*t...! I am also of the believe
that there is very little *bad* gear out there, but that system synergy
and proper setup plays a huge role in the differences we hear in audio
gear.

I'm in my early 40s, and I grew up mostly listening to rock, blues and
jazz. Played piano as a child and keyboards in a college rockband, but
was a jazz saxophonist in high school. At my current age, I no longer
play the piano or saxophone...if someone wants me to play music, I now
play the stereo. :-)

My music taste has evolved as I've gotten older. I will admit that my
audiophiling has also affected my musical tastes, finding it hard to
listen to poorly recorded music from the 1940s and earlier as well as
some of my favorite stuff from the 80s. These days, I'm listening to a
lot of guitar-based music (everything from Jeff Beck to Tommy Emmanuel
to Kenny Burrell), trumpet (John Faddis, Mark Isham), and world music
(Mino Cinelu, Robbie Robertson, others). But I still consider Sonny
Rollins and Stan Getz among my favorites.

As far as my audiophile tastes, I have gotten to the point where I
don't think I could live without a tube somewhere in my system! The
Blue Circle hybrid amps are perfect for me, because I can get the
warmth and musicality of tubes that I love while still getting enough
speed and clarity that the music I love demands. I'm not a mega-bass
kind of guy, as you can probably see from my primary use of 2-way
speakers with no subwoofer. And Ralph Dodson is the most impressive
engineer I've met in this industry, so if he thinks Bybees help, I'm
all for 'em...! ;-)

Anyways, that's me...

I was using my TP as is streaming lossless WAV files to it. So the
comparision was between the TP and the Arcam CD82T with only slightly
different connectors. I could have taken those out of the equation as
well with lots of cable plugging and unplugging but I doubt they would
change my view that basically both setups are equivalent when played
through my amp/speakers.

I am tempted to take all the kit down to my local hi-fi shop and
connect it up to a top line amp/speaker combo and see if a difference
between the TP and CD player can't be found. The sound is only as good
as your weakest component really and in my setup I don't think this is
the TP (or the CD player).

Hi Gary,

Good luck with the tests - let us know how it goes. Just make sure you
have high quality lossless files for your test (FLAC, WAV or ALAC).

I think you must have a very easy listening room to enjoy all the

Squashballs unfortunately do affect the leading edge and remove some of

I found that by using the Stillpoints with 4 squashballs I got the best

2006-11-29 Thread cliveb

I'd like to make an observation about the change in attitude we've seen
from Sean. Not very long ago, his postings were just about as friendly
as you could possibly hope to read. His tolerance of pretty much every
tweak and mod to the SB, no matter how nutty, was absolutely
remarkable. Recently, and particularly in this thread, he seems to have
become just a little - how do I put this? - pissed off. And I can quite
understand why.

From what I've been able to gather, Sean has worked his nuts off for
several months to engineer the Transporter to be the finest device he
could possibly build. It's his baby, and he probably feel very
protective towards it. So it's no wonder that when he starts hearing
about proposed modifications that, due to his intimate knowledge of how
the TP works, he is pretty damn sure are likely to actually degrade it,
he's gonna start being just a little less than polite to those who are
in some ways threatening his baby.

What's more, if a lot of modded Transporters start appearing on the
scene, and they turn out to be inferior to the stock item (as it seems
Sean is fairly certain they will be), then it's going to hurt the
reputation of the Genuine Article(tm).

I for one feel for Sean - I get the impression that he would *really*
like to let rip, but basic courtesy is making him bite his lip.

I suspect the KEFs are up to showing the difference between a TP and an
SB, but Arcam vs TP may be a bit much for them (i.e. I agree with
highdudgeon!)

The Naim is a decent amp (not something I'd buy, but it does do some
things very well), so the system would be up to a better pair of
speakers, which would be much more revealing. Perhaps the
Arcam/Naim/KEF system worked well together, and the TP lost the balance
somehow.

Anyway KEF Qs are kinda bland. The guy I bought my Harbeth HL-P3ES

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: BolderSB2/UltimatePS V TP

2006-11-29 Thread highdudgeon

Given the cost, a real deal-breaker for me, other than long-term product
support, would be aesthetics. And, no, this is not because I am a
retailer.

I had a SB3 running into the rather industrial-looking Lavry DA10.
Now, the SB3, while cute, is not exactly the loveliest bit of gear.
Throw in a Lavry and you're talking geeky. Geeky is not part of our
decor. So, to me, having the extra bells and whistles, design-wise, is
important. The dual displays, the knob, etc., look good in our living
room -- good enough for my wife to notice and comment on it. And that,
my friends, is saying a lot. The bottom line is that I am picky about
design and that small sonic differences can be outweighed by design
issues. Now, if the sound is a tad better and the design is a world
better...

But, YMMV. I have friends with cables all over the place, strange
boxes piled on exotic boxes, etc. They tend to be 1) single or 2) have
dedicated guy room in their house. I am happy to have my primary
system in the family room. That is where we spend a great deal of
time, entertain guests, house a collection of modern furniture that far
outprices the audio stuff, etc.

Anyway, interesting review, Tom. Thanks for taking the time to do
this. I think you are right: for some people, and especially those
already owning a SB2/3, going the way of modifications might be
attractive. For others, certain considerations -- sound quality,
support, and aesthetics -- make the Transporter attractive. Either
way, it's all about enjoying music and the experience of putting
together a system that appeals to YOU. In the end, the consumer is the
best judge of what that means and what will get him (or her) there.

I have been wondering about the KEF speakers as well. They are a bit of

Thanks for the feedback. I really think the TP needs some excellent kit

for a low/mid range system like mine it is a bit of a luxury.

nicely. You only need to bring your favorite 15-20 albums - in FLAC that
is around 6GB. Set fixed IP addresses and use a crossover cable. The

Amen.

Now, I will go take some pills.

This is what I love about this company.
it's refreshing, Sean, to hear you speak with candor and honesty re.
 the TP.

I would be seriously concerned about modding something that already
sounds so good, it's smart to wait and hear if there is a difference.

Well, I don't see that: Sean has always been proud of his designs and

But that said, the real change I noticed was that people suddenly
started bragging about how insane they are

More lighthearted than the usual You need the Widgy3000 or perhaps you
are just deaf and can't hear the subtleties and it would be lost on a
peon like you that sometimes shows up. (Admittedly not nearly as
often here as on a lot of other forums..)

Spending money on a Transporter (or a Squeezebox), the associated Other
Crap (whether it is an $2000 amp or a $200 receiver), the CDs that the
thing always demands (mine says, feed me seymour), and wasting
time here is...

Insane.

But insanity is often good.

Or at least better than being boring.

I have a fully modded and stock Transporter. I haven't done any
critical A/Bing, nor do I really intend to, but, for what its worth,
they both sound fantastic as transports.

Living in Los Altos, I'd be happy to bring them by SD if someone over
there wants to compare them.

Rotel cd player better than the SB2. The SB2 almost sounded muddy

Have you decided on the SB3 or transporter yet?Nope, not yet. Well, not the
SB3, I don't think that will be an upgrade
really compared to the SB2. I'm hoping the SB4 will have the TP dac, I
don't need all the fancy TP stuff really, just the nice layout and dac
:-)
I guess, realistically, I'll have to go for the TP...

The mods to Sleestack's TP were done by Aberdeen(mauimods.com).
If you're interested, I suggest you contact him directly for more
details.

PS- Sean, glad to hear you're off the pills. Send the leftovers to

Yes it was. Anthony does all of my TACT ger and sources. I had him do
full mods on one piece for my reference headphone system, whatever that
may include. I have much trust in him and his work. He never goes
overboard and provides and measurements whenever possible.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: What should be the first upgrade?

2006-11-29 Thread chinablues

Interesting thread for me. Thanks to all the contributors. I have BW
804 mains center + BW 805 rears for the AV part. Also a Velodyne
DD15 sub. Just added a Transporter. But running it all off a Denon 3805
AVR. For TP into the 3805 I normally run in 'pure stereo' mode. I first
heard the BW's at a specialist BW dealer here in Beijing. At that
time I was travelling monthly from the US to China. Of course the BW's
in the dealership were being driven by big amps. Rotel I think. I'll
need to go back for a look. Quite an interesting shopping mall(Oriental
Plaza)...bose upstairs, BW downstairs! I bought the equipment in the
US before coming out to China on assignment. The BW's appealed not
only the sound and the looks, but also being British allowed a little
bit of patriotism to creep into the purchasing decision.

Although I'm pleased with what I've got, reading the postings it really
looks like I need to be thinking of audio amps to drive the two front
804s. Certainly, if my memory serves me right, what I heard at the
dealer, was that bit better than what I have at home.

Appreciate any comments on this. Is the Denon 3805 such a weak link in
this set-up?

Dan
