[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Endler Attenuators and Balanced Outputs, Transporter

2006-12-11 Thread cliveb

SuperQ;161297 Wrote:
Yea, single value attenuators are just a resistor network. Would you
mind posting your circuit and other info to the wiki?

I've had a hard time googling for pre-made balanced attenuators, most
of what I find is for microphone inputs.
I don't think I should post anything to the wiki before others have had
a chance to review what I've done, so I'll describe it here.

A theoretically ideal resistor network to attenuate a simple
(unbalanced) signal uses three resistors. The circuit is shown in the
attached diagram (Ideal Attenuation Network). In principle it should
be possible to juggle the values of R1, R2 and R3 so as to achive the
required attenuation AND maintain the source and destination
impedances. However, solving the simultaneous equations is fiendishly
difficult for my mathematically feeble brain, and my understanding is
that in many cases the solution could call for negative resistances in
one or more places.

So an ideal network isn't really practical. Fortunately for us, we're
dealing with audio signals (ie. very low frequencies), so maintaining
the impedances isn't critical. We can instead use the circuit shown in
the second diagram (Basic Attenuation Network). This does not
maintain the source and destination impedances, but provided the values
for R1 and R2 are chosen sensibly, the effect will be insignificant.

Let S be the output impedance of the source component, and D be the
input impedance of the destination component. After inserting the
resistor network, the resulting source impedance seen by the
destination device will be:

1 / ( 1/(S+R1) + 1/R2 )

The destination impedance seen by the source device will be:

R1 + 1 / ( 1/D + 1/R2 )

And the attenuation in dB will be:

20 * LOG ( R1 / ( 1 / ( 1/D + 1/R2 ) ) )

For anyone interested in building their own attenuators, it is simple
to set up an Excel spreadsheet with the formulae above so you can plug
in values for S, D, R1 and R2 to find the resulting new impedances and
attenuation.

Provided D (the destination input impedance) is fairly high - which it
is for all modern audio gear, the attenuation factor is primarily
defined by the ratio of R1 to R2. A ratio of 4:1 gives about 12dB of
attenuation. Provided R2 is kept reasonably small, the resulting source
impedance will not get too high. But don't make R2 too small, or R1 will
also have to be small, and the resulting destination impedance will be
too low.

For example, in my own setup, the Transporter has an output impedance
of 100 Ohms, and the power amp has an input impedance of 10 kOhm. Using
R1 = 3k and R2 = 680, we get an attenuation of 13.5dB, with a new source
impedance of 557 Ohm and destination impedance of 3.6 kOhm. If the input
impedance of the power amp was 100kOhm, the attenuation would then be
12.9dB. As you can see, the actual attenuation isn't affected that much
by the destination input impedance. I've never seen a power amp with an
input impedance below 10kOhm.

Finally, for a balanced signal, you simply need to duplicate the
circuit for both +ve and -ve signal lines, as shown in the final
diagram (Attenuation for Balanced Signal). The two R1s and two R2s
should be matched as closely as possible. It's probably worth buying a
handful of the required resistors and measuring them to find the best
matched pairs. I use 1% 0.6W metal film resistors.

This doesn´t seem to be a bug just a weak signal of the digital sources.
It just needs to long to get in sync. My cheapo DVD-Player sometimes
needs a part of a second to get in sync with the Transporter also. My
Marantz CD player syncs immediately without any noise.
A solution i can imagine is muting the digital ins for 1 second while
switching.

The input i have my main problems on is the HD STB TV box connected via
optical, and I have an inkling that you may be right with the weak
signal I will try a different connection method and see if problems
continue as I also have now twice had fade outs where the sound output
decreases slowly to zero and I need to switch inputs or switch on and
off to reset. So i expect the optical cable may have been kinked or
something at some stage . But the burst of noise is unrelated and
happen on some top quality equipment and cables.

It probably has many names. The most common name I've seen is L-pad,
probably because the two resistors form an L shape in the circuit
diagram.

Any general purpose attenuator for use with multiple devices (such as
Endlers or Rothwells) will necessarily have to use the basic layout,
since the ideal network is only for specific known input and output
impedances.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 performance in a decent budget system

2006-12-11 Thread robw

Hello,

After plenty of auditioning I have just bought my first hi-fi system -
Rotel RA-05 amplifier with BW CM1 speakers. I auditioned this system
with the Rotel RCD-02 CD player (and loved the sound), but have decided
to go for a Squeezebox (SB3) as my source. Unfortunately I couldn't
audition the SB3.

I have two questions:

1. Would the sound quality of an unmodified SB3 using analogue outputs
be similar to that of the RCD-02? (I note that both devices use Burr
Brown DACs, but I'm not sure which)

2. If I wanted to improve on the sound of the SB3 (and only had about
£200 to spend), would I be better off with a £200 external DAC (e.g.
the Shek D2) or with the Bolder Audio analog mod?

Thanks for any advice!

Rob.

As a start, a linear PSU and decent cables should be good enough. Then
the next step should be a mod or a DAC.

Q1: I can't comment on the latest Rotel players, but the general
thinking is that the SB3 easily carries its weight with respect to
similarly- (and slightly higher-) priced CD players.

Q2: I bought a Shek d2 and am very pleased with it. It now rivals my
Shanling CD player, although does lack the real dynamic weight of the
(£1,500) CD player; I found it a big improvement on the stock SB3. I
posted my thoughts on the d2 on this forum a couple of weeks ago. My
bottom line is that I now listen to the SB3 much more: previously the
CD/SB difference was so great that I only used the SB for background
listening; now it sounds good enough to listen to 'properly'.

I agree with Tomsi's comments about getting your power and cabling
sorted though, but this shouldn't eat too much into your £200 budget.

I'd recommend anyone to try tube amps, but:

- The Jolida will drive your 601s, but not to a real party level

- Your proposed system would be not the most balanced. That's fine if
you're planning to upgrade the speakers within a year or so, but if
not, you may do better to think more about system synergy.

My first tube amp was a 10W Audio Innovations, and I had it driving
some old KEFs. It sounded great, much better than the
Audiolab/Cyrus/Rotel/Arcam integrateds that I tried, and it was loud
enough for a teenager into Hendrix (albeit one whose parents
weren't...)

There's nothing wrong with your choice of amp; my main point is that
your 601s wouldn't be getting the best out of it.

My old Snell Type Es were perfect for that kind of valve amp, and they
went for just over £100 on ebay (good job I got my Living Voices for a
song too!) - all old Snells are great with valves. And it seems they
don't command much on ebay!

But speakers are deeply personal. I think you can't go too far wrong
with anything from Dynaudio and Harbeth, but speakers all have a
character - much more so than most other components - so my steak might
be your offal. Or my venison your lamb. I like this image :)

I have a chinese amp (a Ming-Da) driving a pair of Harbeth HLP3-ES
speakers in my kitchen system which sound great too. It doesn't go
that loud (the Harbeths are quite low sensitivity), but it's plenty for
my small kitchen.

I'd be wary of pairing Dynaudios with a low power tube amp as they like
power and a lot of it. I listened to some that sounded_really_good, but
the amp was a KT-88 based PP design that had a lot of oomph.

Seeing how the mods made it into the transporter that seems like the

My question is why don't some modders do this, rather than continuing
the external PS mods? How are silver bybees in the PS going to make a
difference when it hits CB traces and other undesirables the minute it
gets inside the SB?? The difference made by an external supply is
probably slight in comparison to super regulators.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Analog Output Impedance

2006-12-11 Thread 04dgmsilv

I have read the unbalanced analog output impedance of the transporter is
100 ohms at 0db attenuation. My question is, what is the attenuation
when using the 10, 20, 30 db settings? I am planning on running the
transporter direct to an amp with ~20kohm input impedance, but I'll
need some analog attenuation with my 101 db Zu Druids.

Thanks,
Dan

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Power supply question

2006-12-11 Thread tranandy

Hi guys,
I'm a newbie who just got his SB3. Great piece of kit.

I'm interested in a modest tweak to the PS and found this PS:

http://www.elpac.com/products/commercial/external-single/documents/fw18.pdf

Model No. FW1805 appears to have what I need. 5v and 3 amps with the
right output connector and regulated output.

Would this work?

Many thanks ahead of time.

Personally I far prefer the sound of the Transporter to the SB3 Dac1
combo (which is what I had before buying the Transporter). I was never
happy with the Benchmark's cold, uninviting analytical 2d-ness. But of
course this is my personal opinion and is probably disagreed with by
many.
Other dacs will sound different (better/worse depending on the person)
to the Transporter.

I'm only certain of the answer to one part of your question... you'd be
daft to use the Transporter with another Dac.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Inguz DRC - measuring question

2006-12-11 Thread daveellison

Hello,
I've been reading about Inguz audio correction for some time and am
excited to give it a shot in my system. I picked up the recommended
ECM8000 measurement mic and am looking at audio interfaces now. I know
the audio interface needs to provide phantom power to the mic and be
able to record at 44.1Khz and include line in and mic inputs. If I meet
this criteria is there any reason to spend more on an interface that I'm
only using for this one application? Will a better audio interface allow
me to create superior/more effective Inguz filter?

Thanks,
Dave

controlled by a single universal Sony remote($25. at Wallmart).

IMO, the revolutionary Transporter should have been packaged in a
plain 1U case with no knobs or buttons controlled by a programmable
remote with a display like the Sonus and offered in a basic digital
only version, with expansion slots to add daughter cards for a DAC,
 ADC, etc...

I was obviously referring to the various controls on different types of
components. No, a DVD player has no volume knob, but it also doesn't
function a a preamp and has many other buttons.

I have many TACT pieces. Unless you are using them as amps, they most
certainly have a voume dial. Amps don't need controls, tht's what
preamps are for.

So you believe being exclusively dependent on a remote control would be
better for the Transporter? So that everyone is forced to use a remote?
You think that being forced to use a remote is required for something to
be revolutionary? Why not just give both options as they have. Not
everyone wants to be tied to a $25 universal remote. By the way, if
you love remotes so much, why not get a better one?

And why do you keep calling the Transporter revolutionary? Does SD use
that in their marketing somewhere?

High Efficiency probably indicates that it is a switching PSU. It
doesn't explicitly say it, though. If it is switching, then it is
probably not much better than the adapter included with the SB in the
first place. What you want is a linear regulated PSU.

That one is probably a switched design - and that is not what you want.

If you are handy with a soldering iron, you could make one based on the
SS5-3/OVP (-6/OVP)model. That one looks like Elpac's version of the
industry 5V/3A version a lot of us have used. There is at least 5
versions of them out there.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Personal Transporter vs decent(ish) CD Player setup

2006-12-11 Thread ziggy

A little disappointed compared to my regular CD player, in my 'music'
setup.

Works fantastic in my HT setup, ...but, so does the Squeezebox [lol]
(HT has a 5.1 Integra receiver that was rated to be 'fantastic for
music' ;-) based on some people I asked around - obviously not those
that are crazy enough to listen to Quads or other mid-to-top-end audio
stuff)

Sorry about the slow responses, but I wanted to make sure the thing is
completely 'broken-in' before I post my opinions.

Fyi, I've been running it continuously with various material from my
readyNAS (as well as the 'natural sounds' Hard Thunder and Lightning
from the internet selections), for over 168hrs.

[Had relatives over in the weekend, and so couldnt do much]

Essentially -
- using FLAC for my music
- looks there is very little difference from time=0 and time=170hrs,
which was a bit unexpected - I've seen a lot of components that break
in and sound quite different 'straight out of the box.'
- material ranges from test CDs (eg Chesky), various well-recorded
'audiophile' labels like WaterLily Acoustics (fantastic recordings) to
'somewhat electronick-y' stuff - ranging from Pink Floyd, to Dire
Straits and others in that genre, to various classical pieces - mostly
from Baroque and Classical periods (eg. Bach's Brandenburg renditions -
Trevor Pinnock, and a bunch of other great recordings), as well as some
of my favorite Blues and Jazz recordings.

I was hoping to put a good list on the lines of
1. What I listened to,
2. What the Transporter sounded like,
3. and what the Arcam sounds like.

[My current summary: I think this is a fantastic product, and I will
*definitely* buy the MarkII or MarkIII Transporter or something
equivalent in the near future - no need for the 'intelligent knob']
:-)

More later...

2006-12-11 Thread ziggy

...oh, and I forgot to add : I listened to it in 3 configurations

1. Using an active preamp
[the Adcom was rated 'stereophile classA', and sounds good despite the
rating ;-). Someone told me it was a Nelson-pass designed ClassA single
stage, but it sounds so good that I am yet to open it up ;-)]

2. Using a passive preamp
[the adcom also has a passive mode, that sounds quite terrible...in
comparison to... ]

3. Using my homebrew passive
[..based off a somewhat expensive Penny and Giles potentiometer someone
lugged from the UK a long time ago]
This is what I listen to 90% of my time, despite lacking the remote
control volume controls of the Adcom - a bit inconvenient, but gets me
atleast a little exercise :)]

Anyway, later..

Use phono - the optical output is to go to a DAC or digital amp.

BTW there's a couple of pairs of Snells (type J and type K) on ebay at

To a good approximation: no. The measurement process uses very long
logarithmic sweeps to reduce the effect of background noise and
nonlinearities; mostly, background noise from the room/environment and
nonlinearities from your loudspeakers will be much bigger than from the
mic interface.

(Patience and experimentation time, though, seems to be an
irreplaceable virtue...)

I have just gone through the reviews; as the box is a full-blown media

Couldn't find anything relevant on sound quality, but if jitter is OK
it should work fine with a good DAC.

A definitive no-no for me is that the NeoLink software is windows only

I would hope that a future version of SqueezeBox or Transporter would

Not really... a shunt is a type of network for a multi-step attenuator.
All of the different methods of multi-step attenuation (shunt, series,
ladder) work using a voltage divider circuit, which is what is being
illustrated above. Here's a good overview:

http://www.goldpt.com/how.html

The concept being proposed here would be more similar to a ladder type
attenuator, as it has input and ground resistances defined for a
specific attenuation level. These are typically the most expensive form
of attenuator, as it requires more resistors per volume step than shunt
or series types.

IMO the WM8740 is a serious contender. Too bad they don't say which
one they use in the X5000.

buy one of these. It doesn't look ready for primetime to me. However, I
do like several features, and would like to see them implemented by
 SD/Logitech in the future:

 1) Streaming video
 2) (optional) external user interface
 3) pluggable media option (usb, flash, etc)

I would hope that a future version of SqueezeBox or Transporter would
try to incorporate these features. Otherwise, they may fall behind.

I am not sure if I want (or need) the video myself, but the other bits
are of interest.Personally I would like a compact unit with a built in
disk for use at places without any computers/network.

If you look at the MCP Club review, it is a WM8728 chip.

Great post -- love seeing this kind of stuff. Of course, I can't come

I've been listening with the Endlers all day. There is absolutely no
difference before/after. Wish they were better finished...specifcally

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Analog volume using Transporter

2006-12-11 Thread richidoo

In looking for the threads from the ancient past from which I learned
what I know about SB volume control processing, I see they are too old
and have fallen off. So I cannot refer you to the stuff I read to
explain why I think the way I do. I see some new topics about TP VC, I
will check those out to see if anything has changed.

SB will not play 24/96 files, and its supposed ability to play 24/44.1
though analog outs is not very valuable to me, so I never thought twice
about it. I would be surprised if SB could make analog output volume
changes on a 24 bit wav source file.

When I bought my SB, there was no mention in the advertising about
anything to do with 24 bit playback. But this thread is about TP, so I
should not have mentioned SB at all. The reason I did was that Sean
answered a question when TP was announced about volume control
processing in which he said it was done same as SB. But TP will play
24/96 files and I bet it will change volume on them, so maybe they
aren't exactly the same?

This topic is about analog VC, so I was not referring to SPDIF. I have
no idea what SB passes to ext DAC with 16 bit input file.

As for your third question, you're still talking about digital output,
and I am talking about SB analog out using internal DAC with 16 bit
source wav file. I don't care about quantization noise when playing
mp3.
Seeya!

You got that right!

My wife likes to listen to music with me, but she is usually reading a
magazine or something, and does not concentrate on the as intently.
Maybe it's because she is so much smarter and I have to concentrate
harder than she to get it. We almost always watch TV after listening to
a CD. Beethoven is just a warm up to Iron Chef or Sex in the City.

Except there seems to be no way to find out what sampling rate and bit
depth is in use. From System Preferences on the Powerbook there is
the regular Sound control panel as well as a custom one for the

 use.

This doesn't address the desire to see the Transporter display what
it's receiving, but you may not be sending what you think you are from
the Mac...

Just FYI, in case you're not aware of this, with certain classes of
digital output hardware, the machine's output sample rate and bit depth
are controlled by the not-entirely-obvious Audio MIDI Setup
application (in the Utilities subfolder of Applications). I think that
(if the settings there aren't overridden elsewhere, in which case the
places you'd set things in Audio MIDI Setup should be locked out or
absent) machines generally output whatever is set there, resampling as
necessary, rather than outputting a multitude of changing digital
output formats at the whim of sound-producing applications.

(Yes, I can see both the pros and the cons of this model.)

I agree with MC but I don't mean this to answer for him.
The TP has a great DAC . I haven't heard better. i've compared it to
the Lavry DAC
(which many like better than the Benchmark).
I like the TP better than the Lavry. I think the 2 are so close it may
just be a matter of opinion.

IMO it would be a waste of money to use the TP to feed an external DAC
since I don't think there is a DAC out there that is better.

If you want to use an external DAC you can save a lot by using it with
an SB

If you want a TP for the looks, I would suggest you live with it a
month, then compare it to other DACs.
I would be surprised if you still wanted a stand alone DAC.

Let us know what you decide and what you hear in your comparisons,
should be interesting and (hopefully) fun

Technical and materialistic perfectionism are guy things. Women are
just as musical as men, of course. I know some terrific women
performers, ranging from opera singers to punk guitarists. By and
large, they're not so much into the fancy audio rig thing -- they hear
the music and go from there. There are exceptions to the rule, and I
know of few of them, but the audiophile world is overwhelmingly male.

That's one nice thing about a system involving a Transporter or SB,
amp, and speakers...simple enough to keep everyone happy.

Well, maybe.

My TacT 2150s are used as power DACs and don't need any preamps or
volume controls.

Yes, I believe the Transporter would be a better value, if it was
exclusively dependent on a remote control with a display, but if you
and George like playing with the knob and buttons, it's your money.

The $25. remote for my TacT gear, DL and transports works just fine,
would a more expensive one make my system sound better?

Are you saying the Transporter isn't revolutionary?
