Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Sony HAP-Z1ES
I second that. They state that even MP3 files will be up sampled to DSD resolution retrieving any details missing in former format. Putting aside marketing and greed I would say this is nothing new. Slimdevices came with that idea ages ago introducing Transporter and I am only surprised that it took so long for others comprehend the value of such devices. If Slimdevices or Logitech later had continued development and overall trend, it would have been a great success and many followers (us) would be happier than ever. I suspect they would end up in holding a big chunk of the market, similarly to Apple OSX computers now. For cleaning I use cheapest dish liquid and hot distilled water. Then goes the Technics 1200 MKII with Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge right into Pearl Phono Stage. Recording is usually made by field recorder at 24/96 through line input. Post processing, crackle removal etc. done in Sound Forge. Now, I found that some alcohol based cleaners increase background noise - checked that many times, comparing recordings in Sound Forge. I did not notice any difference among several recorders doing A/D process. However I always kept them powered by batteries, not external power supply. Worst sounding turns out to be computer with sound card input. This is a digitizing process but I would use it in the least amount needed. Also do not underestimate the phono stage. IMO this is, right with turntable, the most important piece. Norderney, Audiomuze is right. I use Touch as digital transport only. Logitech Transporter is a very fine audio piece and it's been entertaining me for some time. If it was the last dac I had I would live with it. However, we all have the choice and I have always felt that it did not provide sufficient level of musical performance. JJZolx No such question was asked here but if you insist... :-) After realizing the fact that my current dac sounds better enough to make decision to sell either Touch or Transporter, I did comparison which of them is better as digital source. Obviously, taking into account finances and other users' opinion, that's easy verdict. However to have a peace of mind, I went ahead and play. Result? Putting away all technical aspects and measurements, it is all about music and emotional experience, Transporter is a better source. Now, my question arises. Is it better enough to justify the price difference ? IMO, absolutely not. That's why I did stick to Touch and save some bucks. Ask yourself a question if you know what you're looking for. What kind of sonic signature you like ? If you enjoy your Touch, why bother to upgrade. I like my DAC because IMO it has a perfect signature. It's a liquid, mellow/relaxing, sweet highs, very nice lows. All that with great resolution and multilayered soundstage. Most of all it is musical and involving, you could listen to it for hours and hours. Additionally it can drive headphones with ease. Send email to Spencer. He is the one from fetaudio website. I just repeat myself here from other post and say that I strongly recommend one of the diy units. If you're handy with soldering iron there is no other way. I went through range of commercial dacs including Transporter, Minimax, Benchmark, Audio GD, Northstar Design, Weiss and some I don't remember names of. Always there was something keeping me off those units, either sonic performance or high price. Sure it is a matter of personal taste but what I recently got for $175, blew away everything I have heard so far. This is a dac kit based on PCM1794 and extremely good class-A output stage - all discrete, paper-in-oil coupling capacitors, Vishay resistors etc. All high quality components. Yes, in my opinion, it is really so good but always mind your taste. Moreover I think that, nowadays, majority of the dacs are made to look good on papers (good spec). Musicality factor is really underestimated and omitted factor in manufacturing audio equipment. Speaking of this particular diy dac, you would need a case and some inner guts to get it work. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Why do things sound the way they do?
Friend of mine told me quite interesting story. He was born in Austria in the early 1930's and as a little boy he used to watch his father at work. Man was manufacturing the violins. For years whole family was in contact with music and musicians but before war's end, they emigrated to USA. Here his father continued the work on instruments and my friend decided to go that way as well. This was rather side job nevertheless he learnt some tricks to make violin, especially the new one to sound right. After the violin was made and ready to go, they put it inside the cardboard or thin walled wooden box by hanging the instrument on the line or the rope on both ends so it did not touch anything. Next they placed speaker very close to the instrument and for a long time played...violin music. That took place when electric equipment for music reproduction was available, way before they simply played real violin for hours to freshly made ones. Of course this smells like audiophool snake oil so intrigued and very doubtful I did ask about secret? He simply answered that this techniques helps the new wood to learn how to properly resonate and be more musical. Now, in my opinion man deserves huge respect since he played those instruments since he was 5 and spent countless hours manufacturing them. Nowadays he's over 80 and still has damn good ear. You could laugh me out but sometimes I ask my wife about or use my cat to determine whether my system reproduces the sound with some reality to it or not. I play some high quality nature sounds like birds etc. and observe reaction of the cat. It's done every time when something is changed in the system, either wiring, or components. Placement of the speakers doesn't matter really. Every test is conducted while the cat is more or less in the same state so I could eliminate factors influencing her judgment. It works every time and my wife's verdict in 99% agrees with cat's. Being very subjective I stopped believing my ears long time ago. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] If you can hear it, can you measure it?
As it was said, our brain is under the constant influence of the countless factors manipulating our experience of hearing. We simply can't hear with only our eardrums. If that was possible, I think, we would be able to hear very objectively and measure real changes in the sound. Unfortunately or not, our hearing sense is much more complex since signals from eardrum are processed within our brain where they are mixed with other data. Try to listen to some audiophile quality music while there is strong light directed into your eyes or you're in the dead freezing temperature... I guess you got my point. No device will measure what you feel. Now, what about things you can measure but you can't hear ? Even my cheap oscilloscope can register some electromagnetic changes of the interconnects while they move up and down. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Rebooting your audio system
Others have pointed out that the improvement may have been the result of clean connections from unplugging replugging cables. But it may have also been the culmination of various unconscious influences that day. Some you might be able to understand (getting your good sound back was a great relief) but other things might be more difficult to spot and sort. Very true indeed. Sometimes we need to reboot our audio systems, other times it is our brain which needs resetting. In my, over a quarter of the century long history of being audiophool, I very often found myself improving audio system only to wake up the next morning and set everything back to the original state. I try to keep the idea of the music as fresh as possible, regularly visiting local symphony and concerts. Yet, still it's very hard to obtain the same, satisfying results in my listening room. It is never ending game with countless number of changing rules. Making things worse, there is some irony here, through all of those years of ear training, I've discover that my wive and my cat are much better listener than me in the sense of being able to formulate better, objective judgments(reactions) whether my system is capable of reproducing natural sound or not. -- gizek very good music Transporter Adcom GFP-750 Citation II tube monoblocks Proac Response D2; Cardas Neutral Reference all over gizek's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34337 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85495 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Switching to slow rollof filter in AK4396
Yes, quite a story - CD player - bombastic :-) Going back to topic, I verified my doubt... AKM4396 pins, CSN, CCLK, CDTI are used in Transporter (see photo) for the very simple reason like volume control. They go to Xilinx controller chip. Apparently, we have problem here and we need to go with different approach for switching slow-roll-off on. Any ideas with mux ? This sounds promising. Please enlighten us how to switch slow bit to 1 ;-). I guess it is the one in D5 under 01H and it can be done only when chip is in serial mode. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Switching to slow rollof filter in AK4396
It can be done via software, of course, but you would need to implement that option into Transporter's new firmware, and that will not happen... It doesn't seem to be a big task at all. Someone having SDK could do that. ... or you could use soldering iron and bite that problem from the other side... ;-) -- gizek Transporter Adcom GFP-750 Monarchy Audio SE-100 monoblocks Proac Studio 100; Cardas Neutral Reference all over gizek's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34337 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76763 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Another Transporter that will not power up...
Happened once to my unit. It turned out to be the simplest reason ever. I use power conditioner/surge protector with switchable power outlets. Transporter outlet was off. Make sure to eliminate those simple glitches before going with your investigation ;_) I have also read somewhere about Transporter's stuck relays. If you confident with multimeter you can measure AC inside unit. Be careful those voltages could be lethal. I'm little surprised by the fact that Transporter cannot decompress on the fly 24/96 flac files without any struggling. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter loses sync with AES/EBU..
I wouldn't use AES/EBU digital out and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that spidf works better. AES/EBU was really added here to meet some, let's say, studio recording requirements but it's not better than good S/PDIF. Don't follow here balanced analog output rule. If you can try BNC, that should be the best. Wonder if you can hear any difference at all. Transporter has really good digital output stage. -- gizek gizek's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34337 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72497 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter loses sync with AES/EBU..
I wish I could use Transporter with external DAC and find out if problem is only limited to your equipment. Did you switch Transporter off during your listening period with external DAC? It may be that there is some kind of signal disturbance in your system and that makes Transporter go south. Definitely something triggers TR to switch to other output. I'm not sure but since TR switches only to S/PDIF, having also optical and BNC, that may be default setting. Don't worry, SPDIF is a slight modification of AES/EBU for consumer use so connect your DAC to S/PDIF and enjoy music. :-) -- gizek gizek's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34337 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72497 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

My CD player and all CD's collection died few months ago. Transporter took their place. I'm sure I will never look back. Now I begin to collect new things - high resolution music files, like those from hdtracksdotcom. I wish I could split the cost with someone - just an idea. Right to Transporter there is special place for ...nice Dual, direct drive turntable. Vinyl resides in soft place of my heart and I just can't let that quality go away.
