Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Wishlist for Transporter 2

2008-02-27 Thread AJones

First the Transport is great.

I would like to see another version of the Transport with no features.
Just a black box with digital outputs that just feed the raw PCM data
(of cource after decoded from FLAC or other codecs) to our own personal
choice of DAC. A slave clock input would be great.

Personally I feel the Transports DAC has some dithering issues.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Wishlist for Transporter 2

As i stated it is my personal feeling that comes from personal
experience recording music on digital systems for the last 15 years.
The ditherin we use for our final master is Apogee’s UV22HR. There is
a noticeable difference when the bypass is on. I hear a similar tonality
from the transporter. Yes this could come from other factors too.

If that my only complaint about the Transporter it shows how much I
like it. And yes i use the build in DAC/pre.

I quite like the TP's physical design, but I quite understand that it's
a personal preference thing. Much of what I see in audiophile magazines
etc is exceptionally ugly to my eyes.

Anyway, thought you might be interested in another datapoint. I spent a
day with the SD crew at a show shortly after the TP launched demoing it
and the SB3. I talked about the DAC, I talked about the balanced
output, I talked about the jitter measurements. Far and away the most
popular features were the handles and the VU meter display (and this
was coming from people who didn't even blink at the pricetag).

I have the Behringer plugged into my Transporter via the AES/EBU in/out

It does not come with a mic.

I've played around with the manual eq settings and it seems to be good

You could plug it in the tape loop of your amp, but in your case I
wouldn't, unless you have sources other than the SB3 to which you want
to apply correction.

According to your sig, you have the following setup:

SB3 - DAC - amp - speakers

In your case, I would insert the processor in the digital chain, i.e. in
one of the following ways:

1. SB3 - Processor - DAC - amp - speakers
2. SB3 - Processor - amp - speakers.

Option 1. still uses your existing DAC and just uses the processor for
the equalisation, etc.

Option 2. replaces your DAC completely.

I have mine setup as follows:

Transporter - amp - speakers
   |^
   v|
processor

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Wishlist for Transporter 2

2008-02-19 Thread gregeas

My wishlist is based on evolving the Transporter into a digital
two-channel pre-amp. Right now I use it to convert and switch PCM
audio from my cable box and two game consoles. Of course I also listen
to music through it... Sadly, the Transporter is not quite there as a
digital pre-amp. Here's what it needs:

* One-button source switching on the front panel and remote (right now
source switching is not reliable and requires frequent restarts)
* User-configurable attenuation on XLR outs (as mentioned)
* High-quality analog volume control (let's face it, it's a pain in the
ass to limit yourself to the top part of the digital volume range before
you lose resolution)
* Small color screen for album art!
* Removal of rack handles

I will DEFINITELY buy this product... I love the idea of skipping the
analog pre and going straight to the amp...

2008-02-18 Thread Super-Gonzo

I concur with some of the other thoughts here. Here's what I'd do if I
was CEO for a day:

1. drop the displays

2. drop the buttons and haptic knob

3. drop the case, sub in plastic, shielded only as much as necessary
(there has got to be a lot of cost in short run aluminum case fab)

4. use the same circuit board, minus the display logic on the ribbon
cable running to the display/controls, reduce r+d costs and mfr ramp up
time (this obviously may not be technically feasible)

All of these done in the name of reducing cost: I think the target
should be sub 1k US? A price range that would get me personally
interested. (Think about what the average pro-sumer spends on a nice
mid-level DSLR, there seems to be a budget corollary there.)

Call it Transporter Jr. or SB Receiver++, and leave the Transporter as
is. Of course, I have no idea how the math works out, which ultimately
determines the feasibility of a device like this.

According to what I was previously told by engineering, 802.11n is
unnecessary. 802.11g has more than enough bandwidth, and it won't slow
 down a 802.11n network. g and n are compatible standards, you don't
have the problems of a mixed b/g environment.

This isn't entirely true. Read here:

http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/802-11n-router-roundup.ars/7

Apparently some 802.11n routers offer 5ghz only modes which greatly
increase performance (from this review only the Apple device, but I
suspect that will change.) However, this mode only supports n, no b/g.

Secondly, and I think a more important issue, 802.11n offers better
speed at longer ranges than 802.11g (most HW anyways.) As previously
discussed, bandwidth increases aren't really necessary for a audio only
device, even if it is pushing 192/24. But, that assumes a perfect wifi
environment. While the routers offer some range improvement to 802.11g
devices (thus mitigating this argument a little) there's no beating the
speed at longer range of 802.11n. Maybe this would help those that get
occasionally drop-outs from sub-optimal network setup.

All that being said, I care very little about this feature. It's a nice
to have, but I wouldn't pay much for it.

If cost is any issue, why not take the DAC from the TP and put into a
Receiver case? Then sell it as an upgrade external DAC to SB3 and
Controller owners/purchasers. Do the same with the TP PSU. You could
end up selling Receiver/DAC/PSU/Controller for more net margin than a

I have only found one unit in the world that serves as a fully digital
front end with 3-way digital x-over and fully balanced outputs - IN ONE
BOX... and that also may server as a preamp...

The Aussie deqx pre, which is about $10k around where I live.

It doesn't necessarily have to be that expensive

How about a modular output section where you can start with just the
single analog out, and possibly add more modules, X-over or something
else
In this sense a Transporter could serve as one unit that does
everything in a fully active system, and you only have to add
poweramps.

I'm sure the slim guys may do wonders in this area?

I have absolutely no objections to digital volume controls, if done
correctly
Some of the best gear that I've listened to (like the wadia cd players)
solely employs digital volume controls

what I do not propose is the idea of having 15 different boxes to cater
for all the different digital needs. I don't like the idea of having to
run a three day course to my family explaining how to turn on the hi-fi
equipment and then the next two days covers how to switch
sources.

I have a good friend that's a former professional sound engineer,
working with The cure and Dire Straits He's been working for a long
while with his home audio gear... Right now he's got a Behringer Pro
DCX2496 The idea is that this stuff really works, but the family
can't really use the Hi-Fi rig because it's getting way too complicated
and not aimed at domestic usage.

What we need is simplicity and stuff that's easy to use and with
flexibility.

Adding a bunch of different boxes where you need to press 4 switches to
change the source is not what the spouse really needs.

I'm in for fantastic quality with simplicity !

I assume that for a fair amount of users, the Transporter sits in a

Perhaps the design team should contract a famous designer to turn the

Really? Everyone has different tastes I guess :)

I do agree with other posteers that a version of the Transporter
without on board controlls or screens would be a good idea. Like a high
end Reciever.

The VFD displays were always said to be a major cost item in the
manufacture of the SB and the Transporter. Removing them and reducing
the over all size of the case should allow for a less expensive unit.
Not saying it would be cheap, just less expensive :)

EDIT: Actually, even if a headless Transporter with a Squeeze
Controller bundled together was the same price as the regular
Transporter, I think there would be a market for it. But then, I'm not
a marketing weeney (sorry JimC and the rest of merketing) so what do I

My wishlist for TP2 just has one thing, really.

Six channels of analog output.

(Well, eight would be even nicer, but six is enough to do 5.1, or
alternately quad with bi-amplified active crossovers on the front).

(Whaddya mean, there's not much multichannel source material? Build it

Whoooa, now we are talking about a completely different animal than the

If we're talking multi-channel I really think it would be nice! with
options for digital crossovers to handle 2 or three way speakers +
stereo subs (6 or 8 channels) and with a digital loop you can add DSP.

But this is a completely different product than what we have today...
will also be reflected by the price tag...

Actually, I don't think he's asking for 6 channels to implement a
digital crossover. He seems to be talking about surround sound. While
most music is recorded in stereo, there's an ever expanding library of
(most) 5.1 surround mixes. Many of these are inaccesable (in the
digital domain, anyway) to the Transporter because they've been
released on SACD or DRM'ed DVD-A, however there are a small number of
surround DVD-A mixes released by audiophile labels such as AIX and
Classic, which might be possible to extract to the hard drive totally
in the digital domain. FLAC, WMA, et al support multi-channel, and
Music Giants offers 5.1 downloads (although I'm not so sure how
pristine is the lineage of their HiRes files).

Use a little common sense there... One VFD is included in a $300
product and two of the exact same displays in a $2000 product. What do
you think the net savings could be from the $2000 unit if both displays
were eliminated?

I think there's about a one in a million chance of seeing a new
Transporter now that Logitech is pushing the division to crank out
consumer gear that will show a profit when sold by the boat load. But
just for grins:

- Eliminate all server-software-controlled buttons and knobs. It was a
move in an obvious direction from a company that does everything in
software, but in reality they're just not very reliable or terribly
useful.

- One display. The 2nd display balanced the face in the eye of some
designer, but is mostly useless. The case could be made smaller -
there's nothing magical about a 17 width case and plenty of high-end
gear is housed in more appropriately sized chassis.

- A reall power switch, located on the front of the unit.

- A hardware input source selection switch to change digital inputs. I
don't care that this isn't contollable from the remote - I just want
something reliable.

- A chassis designed by anyone other than Fred Bould, or any other
industrial design company that designs furniture and flower vases and
toothbrushes and consumer electronics. Something with more traditional

Definitely multichannel digital output (at least 6 reroutable
channels).

Convolution support, but if you are going to compromise quality to do
it in the player then simply add the software to the Server side,
should work on all current devices.

Optional WiFi or none at all.

No controls on the unit, screen on the remote like in Duet.

But before all that fix the T1 digital input switching.

From most important (to me) to least:

1. No front panel, just like the SBR. I never envisioned a situation
where I'd use the front panel controls instead of the remote, so a
duet-style Transporter would be ideal.

2. 5.1 capability. More and more hires surround is becomming
available. I've got an AIX 24/96/5.1 disc and I'm considering getting
the Classic releases of the historic Bert Whyte recordings
(24/96/3.0); it would be nice if the Transporter could play them.

3. 24/192. I've got several albums in this format. Not sure if I
could bear a difference from 24/96, but it would be fun to try.

With respect, I couldn't disagree more about DSP! :-)

Architecturally it is perfect now. You plug in what you want (and what
you might want to pay for) and leave out what you don't want.

If people don't like the current DSP plug-in perhaps Logitech or
someone else can provide a much better one. That doesn't mean we stop
using the plug-in architecture which has many advantages.

Plus from a pure audiophile perspective I like the fact the processing
is away from the player. Some things just _have_ to be on the player
but DSP and the display don't.

Absolutely not.

With the digital loop now functional, it is trivial to plugin an
external DSP box to do EQ, room correction, or whatever. And you get to
choose your own favourite processor, which will be optimised for signal
processing.

Case in point: I've just bought a Behringer DEQ2496 for ~£135.

I still can't believe it's not there to begin with. I mean, every piece
of software out there has it (winamp, foobar, iTunes ??). Inguz is
nice, but requires too much juice from server and provides more than
 most people need.

This is as a result of SS/SC -not- processing the audio but merely
sending it as data and allowing the player to do it.

This is a GOOD thing. I don't want my OS playing around with the audio
and improving it.

Inguz has to decompress to WAV, make its modifications, and recompress,
all in real-time. This takes considerable CPU grunt. I'm not sure what
TacT uses but I bet it's not off-the-shelf DSP chips - more like RISC or
even x86 CPUs.

This stuff is easy in a software player that's doing the decoding, much
harder in software that isn't decoding at all.

Now the SB1 had an equalizer, so it is possible to do this in software
by accessing some code in the hardware I'd imagine. Then again, many
audiophiles would not want such uncleanliness in their signal path...

Oh and regarding 802.11n, whenever I see this with respect to audio
products, I always chuckle about it - it's the old mine's bigger than
yours argument again (including 24/192, which is more like my numbers

Fully agree with messing with the signal path, and that's why I was

Now, back to the issue, obviously such EQ would have to be implemented

Good question. I am assuming this was something that was handled in
hardware by the SB1. The SB1 used a Micronas MAS3539 decoder.
Anything newer uses a Xilinx CPLD - a programmable decoder which can
allow reprogramming to use new codecs as they are developed. The
Micronas chip was hardwired - the SB1 can never support any formats
other than MP3 and WAV.

I'm guessing that the Micronas chip allowed such adjustments, because
surely these adjustments could only be performed during playback, which
is what the chip is doing.

Probably still to cheap for some audiophiles.

Today there might be only the Linn available at a crazy price tag, but
others doing 24/192 will follow and will have a price which will comes
close to the transporter.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Wishlist for Transporter 2

2008-02-15 Thread schiegl

For me the Transporter is one piece of a successful device. Even if one
doesn't use or value each and every feature as
* analog output section
* digital output section
* dual displays
* knob  buttons
* black/silver rack-sized case
* WLAN/Ethernet support
* plays hires-audio
this makes more sense than selling x different products each with a
subset of these features - the price would certainly not drop
proportional to the amount of removed properties. On the other hand the
SBC will hopefully fill one (last) gap in achieving the attempt music
listening in the 21nd century

How much would i like to see a video device with such comfort and
quality...
* plays all formats
* has different output options
* controlled by webinterface, remote-control with a display and builtin
buttons/knobs
* streaming content from my server and the internet
dreaming mode off

This would be my Transporter 2 - without replacing the (still) great
Transporter 1 :-)
It'll probably take many years until i can buy one of these...

regards,
Markus

I think it would be nice to have a DC trigger output on the Transporter
as well as the Squeezebox, so it would trigger power to the other
stereo components when you turn on the Slim Device. Currently you can
apparently do this if you build your own separate circuit and also add
a plugin, but having a built-in DC trigger output would be really
useful.

You're right.. There are tons of video frontend boxes out there, but
they all suck in major ways for various reasons. A Video
Squeezebox/Transporter would be great. But I've heard before from the
SlimDevices guys that they are all about music, not video. Maybe they
can get another division of logitech to whip something up.

I know that many people are opposed to this idea and like the screen,

Passive analogue volume control.

I would guess this is only of practical use to people doing DSP on the
server which eats into player headroom in advance of the digital volume
control. In this scenario a passive volume control like on the Benchmark
DAC1 might be better overall. Anyway, I intend to be in the market for a
new player at some point and it's a consideration for me.

(But in the absence of DSP the digital volume control is IMHO pretty
much the perfect solution.)

1. 32bit AKM dacs, perhaps 4-6/channel if it makes a positive
difference. Going 32bit all the way internally shouldn't be that hard
either. Transporter 32 sounds nice 8-)

2. Attenuators for XLR outputs for those who use it as a preamp.

3. I would spend some time on voicing the analog output section. Imo it
could use a bit of improvement in microdynamics, it is something that
conveys emotion and keeps listener interested. Perhaps (1) would
address it by default.

3. Smart knob is nice but who really uses it? The only time it is handy
is when the remote is lost or battery is dead. LCD touchpanel instead?

4. Any benefit to move to gigabit ethernet? Everything makes some
difference so I would at least try it just for giggles.

5. Keep the price to a similar level as the original (or lower). Sub
$2K is what most audiophiles can bear and if the product is good (this
one is !) they will buy another one in a future. The competition among
$1-1.5K dacs is pretty fierce.

A parametric EQ feature is a no-brainer addition to the software. It
allows fixing and customization in-room that nearly every system in the
universe could use.

It could be turned off and presets would be possible. Wanna turn down
the treble and boost the bass for those old Zep albums? No problem.
Jazz and classical might want a lighter touch, preset #2. Pull the
most out of a well-recorded vocalist's stuff? You get the idea.

The Squeezebox/Transporter has the potential to be the first and
absolute best option for doing frequency corrections like this. Inguz
has a nice EQ, but it could be expanded and really should be a core
feature of the software.

While I'd love that too, the controller retails for $300. The TP is

allow a cost reduction of $1300-$1800? Look at the Duet, you basically
have a displayless SB3 + controller for $100 _more_ than an SB3. If the

People can choose just to use InguzEQ and then they don't need to worry
about building room filters with specialised software. The EQ GUI plugin
lets you set, save and load EQ settings from the SB3/Transporter remote.
(However you can choose, like me, to use it in a more complicated

GUI aside, the actual quality of the generated EQ filters improved A
LOT in version 0.9.27. It is possible to make closely spaced precise

Yes, but it still has a few drawbacks:
- takes too much resources (there goes the idea of using an old PC to
do it).

- does not have an easy off/on switch. To take it down, one needs to
change file settings on server. The way around is to bring bands to 0
and that still attenuates by 6 (or so DBs) and still uses PC resources.

- Can not be used on the album by album or track by track bases (the
way winamp works). I don't wont to do the whole room correction filter
generation, but rather to adjust certain recordings that I feel don't
sound right. It shouldn't be to difficult to make it to remember
setting for the particular track or album.

I probably don't see the whole picture here but I really don't get it
what a big deal is. As mentioned in the prior post, every software
player around has it and it doesn't seem to take any additional
resources. Why would it be different on SS?

I like mine pretty much as is.

I never use the magic knob, but it is cool. I use a laptop or my
Controller to pick music. I have only used one of the hard buttons on
the front, the power button, which I think is really not a power button,
but more of an attention button.

The pseudo-rack handles are silly. I could see having optional real rack
ears for folks who want it in a 19 rack, but I'm not sure there are
really any customers for that.

As far as I'm concerned, it could be in a smaller case, but many
audiophiles want big cases and would prefer it to be much heavier.

A bigger display would be good for me, I'm getting too old to see the
tiny display from across the room, and I'm not willing to get out of my
favorite listening chair. This is, of course, why the Controller was
invented. So I'm not sure how important the display on the unit itself is.

I wouldn't call it an 'improvement' but it might be cool to have a
switchable pair of analog stages, one nice clean solid state, one creamy
tubes.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Wishlist for Transporter 2

2008-02-14 Thread SuperQ

Based on some of the other comments.. here's my idea list:

DAC update is a given considering the cost of the unit.. I wouldn't
really have a good use for a new one without that.

Color OLED screen, 1-2 inches high so fonts can be more easily readable
from 15 feet. Would totally rock for visualizations.

192/24 would be neat, but I don't own a single bit of music that is
better than 44/16. :-(

It'd be awesome if it could replace my preamp. Basically include 5.1
channel decoding and DACs. I don't need a whole lot of
inputs/outputs.. maybe 2-3 digital, and 2 analog. This is probably way
outside the scope of what Slim wants to do. I don't need video
switching at all, my TV does all of that.. just need to IR blaster
commands to the TV.. or let my harmony do it.

Oh, there's the solution.. A software integrated external video
switcher/scaler. Another noisy thing for those audiophile guys to
complain about is now a separate box. For those people without the TV
inputs or harmony remote.

To me, the obvious next step for SD is a digital home-theater-capable
preamp.

Start with something like the TP, add the capability to decode and
output multichannel audio formats plus a sub/LFE channel, maybe add an
analogue volume control and analogue passthrough, and you have a great
preamp/source combo that I think would sell very well.

More ambitiously, add TacT/Inguz style digital processing too.
