I should have mentioned that is 1 TB in RAID 0+1 (2 TB of actual
storage); I'm not going to loose those hours of work to something
 stupid like a failed disk.
Be careful... A failed disk is only one of the ways one can lose
data, and probably not even the most likely one. File system
corruption, program errors, hardware errors (other than the RAID
drives) and even operator errors can all cause data loss which RAID
won't prevent. The best insurance is a complete, off-line backup. If
you're really paranoid, 2 separate, complete off-line backups allows
you to keep at least one backup off-line at all times, even while the
other 2 are being synchronized. RAID is one technique that allows high
up-time in mission critical business applications, but it is not a
substitute for an off-line (or at least on a different computer)
backup.

One thing that improves your chances of not losing data is to pay
attention to what the synchronization program is doing! About a year
ago, Windows decided that about half-a-dozen of my music files were
part of a corrupt section on the disk, so it daleted them to fix up the
disk. The next time I ran Microsoft Synctoy, rather than copy them
from the backup, it was going to make the disks match by deleting the
good copy from the backup! Needless to say I manually restored them
before letting Synctoy have its way with synchronization. Since then,
I've been using Allway Sync instead, it seems to be much more robust,
but I still check the preview after it analyzes the changes before I
turn it loose to actually do the synchronization.

As the network administrator for my company, I maintain a separate
complete backup off-site that is synchronized weekly. One other issue
with backups is that often they are made, but noone checks if the data
can actually be restored from the backup. While I've never had reason
to do a complete restore, I occasionally get a request to restore a
file or directory that a user has accidentally trashed, so I
periodically do restore individual pieces from the backups.

For my personal music library, right now I'm using a pair of 250GB USB
drives and a pair of 500GB drives. I keep one set at home and one at
the office and synchronize them weekly. I'm almost out of space on the
500GB drives, so I may add another 500 GB pair. Hoiwever, with this
much data, I'm starting to feel somewhat insecure with only two copies.
(Well, I do have all the original CDs, but ripping, editing, encoding
and tagging is a task I'd rather not repeat for stuff I've already
done.) So likely, I'll make a third complete backup to be stored in my
self storage locker.

Hello

I've had my Squeezebox for three days now, and so far am very
impressed. I have it connected to a Bose Wave Radio/CD player, and the
sound quality is excellent.

The base of the equipment is about 6 inches above floor level.
Center line of the display is pretty much eye level with the viewing
area. Tweeters of the Mains are slightly higher, with a slight donward
angle. The tweeter of the CC is higher than viewing, and is tilted as
much as possible downwards. From the main viewing area, the off axis is
not bad. I tend to lie on the floor sometimes and off axis on the cc
does come into play as dialogue can be indistinct at lower listening
levels. (Next cc will be an inwall, or partial in wall with more
ability to downward angle the tweeter.

I have not seen anything like you mention. My plan was 2 fold (with the
2nd portion not being solid). Th cables will be routed and tied with
velcro. To keep them next to the walls I was going to attach velcro
strips to the wall as well.

Thank you

The WAF is very high. Actually she was initially cool to the SB3 when
it arrived. I placed the remote in her hand and she instantly LOVED the
SB3. (And understands the hours of ripping hundreds of CDs to flac that
I did). Next to that, she loves the Pronto as I have it set up totally
activity based. One touch does everything you need.

I just got in new cabling that I will be working on this week. Cable
management WILL be practiced (as currently you can see a bit of the
rats nest thats behind there). Will also be installing a network switch
this week that the SB3 will feed so that I can connect up the Pio 94 and
Toshiba A35 to the internet.

I need to spend some time learning more about the SqueezeNetwork.

Hi Tan!
I had the faceplate cut by the fine folks at Front Panel Express. They
did a superb job. I designed the cutout with a software they have for
download. You can also order using the same program. It was easy.
Turnaround was a couple of weeks. No affiliation with them, just a
happy customer!

The connectors I got from several places but mostly Markertek.

If you get yours finished, don't forget to post your pics here!

Happy holidays!

 Thanks,

The goal of this project was to obtain the maximum stereo nirvana for
less than $2000 (the 3 Audiosource amps were bought used from ebay for
$600).
This project was in my head for years (since the previous speaker set),
but it was jump started when I found a discharged 18” PVC pipe on a
construction site ($17 to remove it from their hands).
The principles behind the design are:
- Minimum diffraction - “zero” baffle.
- Minimum “typical” resonances - no parallel surfaces.
- Maximum dampening - no passive crossover, good drivers
(big magnet…).
- Maximum dispersion (open soundstage) - “zero” baffle, low crossover
frequencies (24 db/octave)
- Phase alignment - 24db active crossover…
- “Flat” extended response - tunable active crossover
- Serious dynamic - tri-amps for a total of 380W / ch on 8
ohm

Drivers:
- Tweeter: Scan-speak D2905/9300
- Mid: Audax HM130Z10
- Woofer SEAS L26RFX/P (H1209) 10 Aluminum Cone

The result blows away my “traditional” generation 4 tower speakers.
Comparatively speaking is like having removed the mud from the sound.
The active crossover is great for DIYer (it took me months to fine tune
it…). Tri-amps sound is simply effortless.
Last but not least, many of the design concepts were “borrowed“ from
mister Brugnoli of Italy which knows a thing or two about loudspeakers.

My setup: details in the signature.

Before SB3 came along the DAC was fed by the Pioneer universal player.
Both the Era Gold V phonostage and RB DAC1 (with X10v3 output buffer)
feed into the Sugden Headmaster for serious listening on 'phones, with
the tape out from this going to the AV amp for putting on speakers. The
pre out from the Sugden goes into the M-Audio Transit USB audio
interface for recording LPs on the Mac for car use - and now FLAC of
course.

As much as I'm growing to love the SB, the Gyrodec is my real pride and
joy: with the tecnoarm and G1042 feeding the Era V it really performs .

This is actually an Aria, before the cantate or even opera was
around... I have had it for a couple of years now. While I could
probably stand to upgrade the amp, I do much more speaker listening now
that I have the Musical Fidelity/Era setup (there is a REL R-205 under
the desk). My next upgrade is likely to be Dynaudio C1 speakers.

Nice clean and simple. The glass audio rack with the all aluminum CI

so that I might get an idea of how it sounds (I need to put a little

be the way to go.

Well I had no expectations of it improving the sound quality of my
system, I just wanted something that would hang onto the plug better
than the cheap contractor's special they put into homes these days.
It's just an affordable and good-quality outlet that really grabs onto
that plug!

Videodrome;243235 Wrote:
But watch out for the flames when people read about the Hubbell outlet

Why would the flamethrowers come out? The weakest point in most peoples
system is the 89-cent builders spec outlet that they have their $600
custom power cord plugged into. If one has a stock power cord, they
should spend a few bucks to get a Hubbell and if they do have the
custom power cord they should spend $50 on a PS Audio Outlet. The other
choices get more expensive like running 220 over to truly protect your
equipment from lightening and brown power. Changing out ones outlet is
a fairly easier and inexpensive modification. Is the outlet going to
cause anyone to say WOW? I doubt it (unless it was bad or corroded),
but ones equipment is going to be happier in the long run.

Saw a system the other day with a new dedicated 20 amp 110 VAC drop on
a magnetic breaker using the old outlet that was attached to what the
new dedicated drop replaced to plug his $4000 power conditioner and
$900 custom Power cord into. That just does not make any sense to me
much less logical sense (bet his wife wanted all the outlets to still
match). Is $50 too much to pay for an outlet when you just spent $6000
on a dedicated drop, custom cord, and power conditioner? That's less
then one percent of the total cost for one of the best outlets
available! If one is not running plain jane stock everything, why would
anyone leave their 89-cent cheapo stock outlet in place?

If you haven't experimented with this already you might try moving your
speakers out from the wall (at least 3 feet). Even if you can't keep
them that way, try it for one listening session... you'll be blown
away by the difference. To me, it's far, far bigger than any change
in upstream components.

Comments on the sound most welcome (perhaps a separate thread?). Given

it's a lot of money to spend without hearing it in advance, even if I

Yes I do. Currently I use those whacko Final Dharma ones, but
Modwright has some interesting ones he showed at RMAF. Although the
stock TP is non-rotating and likely not terribly prone to vibration
issues, the new tube section is what I'm trying to keep isolated.

I'll post impressions once the new caps break in. Dan had to do some
design changes that involved his proprietary caps due to the original
design overdriving the tube section. He had voiced/developed it with
the digital volume down accidentally and didn't notice the issue. It's
all good now.

I'm using the Fostex FE108EZ driver with Planet10 phase plugs.

The phase plugs tame a resonance at around 8KHz and make a positive
difference to the sound of the units. Why Fostex don't fit these as
standard is a mystery.

this looks like a decent little system. I especially like the use of
the headphone amp. Do you recognise any improvement of the sound
quality by connecting the SB3 through the Creek to the AE5 vs.
connecting the SB3 directly to the AE5?

toscana -

indeed I was worried about signal degradation introducing the
middleman headphone amp into the chain. I was certainly not expecting
an improvement.

But no, I hear absolutely no change in the way the AE5s sound. They
sound the same, and they're amazing for the cost. The Creek HA makes
itself utterly transparent, which is the way it should behave, in my
opinion.

And there's a *huge* difference in the quality of the sound coming out
of the Grados (as opposed to connecting them directly to the AE5
loudspeaker output). All I have to do to listen to great quality
headphone output is crank down the volume on the AE5 to zero, crank up
the SB volume to 100%, and set up the volume level manually on the
Creek. Sounds very, very sweet.

So connecting the Creek amp was a great thing to do, even though of
course I'd prefer the SB3 to have a better heaphone driver.

I don't know - am I the only one that would gladly pay for a $600
version of the SB3 with upgraded DA and headphone parts? Amazing as the
Transporter is, I just prefer the elegant little box approach of the
SB3.

Here's a very minimalist and cost-efffective litte system I put together
in the apartment I am spending my next yeatr in away from my trusty home
system (Accuphase based, pictured somewhere else in this thread).

The system consists of

SB3- Creek OBH-21 Headphone Amp - Audioengine5 active speakers.

On the left on the floor is the Grado RS-1 that I also use on occasion.
On counted occasions, I must say I am amazed by the performance of the
little Audioengine5.

Away from view, behind the couch, is an Athena subwoofer that I got a
tad worried the Audiengine bass may be lacking - but the subwoofer is
turned to volume level 1 and to just kick in under 60Hz, so it's
basically unused.

From those interested in cables, the noteworthy and in my opinion truly
advisable addition is the Analysis Plus Oval 12 between the left speaker
(which has the amp built in) and the right speaker - I like spade
connectors, and the included generic cheap cable in the A5 set did not
inspire confidence. The Oval 12 makes a difference. It was a special
online and I got it for $50 or so, and it looks much better. :-)

Between the SB3 and the Creek OBH-21 I run the Cardas Quadlink 5 I had
at home, and I upgraded the cable between the Cardas and the
Audioengine5 with Analysis Plus Silver Oval. Nothing esoteric, would be
out of balance in a system like this.

The result is a system that allows me to truly enjoy my entire music
collection far from home, and in fact thoroughly enjoy it. Which is
fantastic, because one does listen to more music away from the everyday
distractions of the household (like a wife that demands occasional
attention :-)

The SB3-Audioengine5 combo is a truly fantastic thing for people in my
situation - true high quality, musical, defined, analytical, open sound
for less than $700. Wow. It's a great time to be an audiphile.

I still miss my home system, though, but this is a smart investment -
I'll take it home and set it up elsewhere.

Main system:
SB3-Bryston BP25DA-Bryston 4B SST-Wilson Watt Puppy 7

Headphone rig (see post #555
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showth...=19817page=56 for a photo):
Transporter via XLR-Headroom Max Balanced Headphone Amp-Balanced
AKG701s HD650s

Placement is totally about WAF -- it's either this or the speakers go
back in the crates. Hence I am big fan of InguzEQ!

I run Slimserver/Inguz on a MacBook Pro with a 160GB hard drive.

Thank you! I've been considering subs too, but it's a tough sell to my
wife, because honestly, the Mo-Fi's go down below 30Hz on their own.
They just won't do it at concert level, which is usually louder than I
want anyway. I have looked at an external DAC too. Benchmark is the
only one I've really checked out, though, and it's a bit pricey. The
headphone amp function would be nice, though, since my pre doesn't have
one.

I'm just ripping favorite tracks right now, not whole albums. I only
have a 250G hard drive and that's gotta serve the whole family,
so...maybe a dedicated pc down the road! (There's always something!!)

Thanks for the suggestions! So far, my only beef with Windows Media
Player is the fact It won't seem to let me edit tags for individual
tracks; only for albums. Maybe I can go back later and tag the release
year on a track by track basis, using mp3tag or something.

I hear ya, I was in the same boat with my Revel Concerta's but,
depending on the kind of music you listen to, it can really make a
difference. There's just no substitute for cubic inches! I don't have
my sub set up with a lot of gain but it just makes everything sound more
substantial (for lack of a better word). Maybe just demo a unit and
decide then, you probably don't need a huge unit. I went with a
relatively small sub just to give my system that extra something and
it's hidden under a coffee table, so the wife didn't mind too much. My
SVS sub is pretty small ( 14 square), has a beautiful finish, sounds
terrific with music and is an excellent value:

Have I spent any of your money yet? ;-)

Sure. They are named Acoustic Lab ZETA 1.0 from danish designer
Cristian M. Andersen. Unfortunately you can buy neither them or the amp
anymore because of legal problems with the distributor. Such a shame.

You can read a bit more about them here

I just recently completed this simple 2-channel system. It's nice
hearing music on a dedicated system again, without the compromises
sometimes imposed by H/T considerations. Equipment is as follows:

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab OML-2 speakers
Adcom GFA-5500 amp
Adcom GTP-602 tuner/pre-amp
Onkyo DX-7555 CD player
Slim Device Squeezebox 3
Sennheiser HD-580 'phones
OmniMount Stellar G-303 rack
Panamax M8HC-PRO power conditioner

Since receiving the SB a few days ago, I've been feverishly ripping
favorite tracks from my 1800+ CD collection using Windows Media Player
10, ripping in Windows Media Lossless format. (I'm not really a slave
to MS, but as long as it does the job...) I tried some 320 kBps mp3
files but they seemed a bit veiled sounding.

Very nice jdm56! I prefer to keep it simple too! Though new components
have crept into my system lately (subwoofer, DAC) but they have taken
it to a entirely new level!
Once you get all those CDs ripped (if ever!) you can simplify even more
and lose the CD player. I don't even have one in my system anymore. If
there's a CD I want to listen to and I don't have it on my computer then
that's a good excuse to rip it, only takes a few minutes.
A couple suggestions:
- Take a look at Apple iTunes for Windows. It's a free download, has
excellent integration with SlimServer, and Apple Lossless is nice (but
proprietary). However with iTunes you can do a mass-conversion of all
your files to WAV or AIFF if you want down the road.
- Consider an external DAC. I just received my PS Audio Digital Link
III today in fact and WOW, what an improvement over the analog outputs
from the SB3!

The CEC is simply sitting on my TV cabinet at the moment, no extra
isolation and no Shakti Stone and it blows away my SB3 (stock, no mods,
also running into the same DAC). The SB3 sounds confused and lacking in
finesse in comparison. The Squeezebox sounds more impressive, the CEC
sounds more like real live music and has a listen all day character.

Maybe it's simply a matter of taste or system synergy.

Its funny - but I hadn't even noticed what was playing at the time I
finally got around to taking some photos of my setup.

I was fortunate enough to hear him perform live 6 or 7 times. In the
time since his death, I'm sorry to say that I don't listen to his work
as much as I used to. His recordings are all so different, and I'm
realizing listening to them always left me eager to hear more work yet

 Mark-e-Mark,
What do you think of the PS Audio DLIII DAC and SB3 combination?
I've had my eye on the DLIII for sometime.
Did you notice quite an improvement when moving to the DLIII DAC vs.
the SB3's analog outputs? If so, in what way(s)?
Also, how about that linear power supply? Did that make quite the
 difference?
 Thanks!

My hunch was that the DLIII would be quite good after reading several
posts and the article in TAS. The implementation turned out far better
than I expected. This was an upgrade from the Chinese Zhaolu DAC, so I
have a little bit of experience with which to compare. The sense of
the room, the little sounds of bass strings, breath of the vocalist,
all these are now in my room. Speaking of in the room imagery, the
reviewers are not kidding. I am playing with my ripped CD collection
and finding myself distracted by music all over again.

I found the linear supply made a small but nice improvement over the
stock wall wart when I used the SB3 analog outputs. I have not tested
again with the external DAC to see if it continues to have a
difference. I must say that the PS a fairly easy, fun, and inexpensive
project to do, so in that sense it was worth it.

Both the Zhaolu and the DLIII are improvements over stock SB3 outputs
in my rather detailed system. The DLIII provides a significant
improvement in detail and presence in my system.

This is highly interesting subject! Why wouldn't someone open a new
thread to discuss it in depth? I would love to hear some reasonable
explanation how microfonic effect can affect solid state components to
a point of audibility. Yes, including CD players - assuming vibrations
aren't that bad to cause real read errors.

That subject has been flogged to death on all audio forums. Unless it
relates specifically to the SB it will just all be a rehash I think.
