Be careful... A failed disk is only one of the ways one can lose data, and probably not even the most likely one. File system corruption, program errors, hardware errors (other than the RAID drives) and even operator errors can all cause data loss which RAID won't prevent. The best insurance is a complete, off-line backup. If you're really paranoid, 2 separate, complete off-line backups allows you to keep at least one backup off-line at all times, even while the other 2 are being synchronized. RAID is one technique that allows high up-time in mission critical business applications, but it is not a substitute for an off-line (or at least on a different computer) backup. One thing that improves your chances of not losing data is to pay attention to what the synchronization program is doing! About a year ago, Windows decided that about half-a-dozen of my music files were part of a corrupt section on the disk, so it daleted them to fix up the disk. The next time I ran Microsoft Synctoy, rather than copy them from the backup, it was going to make the disks match by deleting the good copy from the backup! Needless to say I manually restored them before letting Synctoy have its way with synchronization. Since then, I've been using Allway Sync instead, it seems to be much more robust, but I still check the preview after it analyzes the changes before I turn it loose to actually do the synchronization. As the network administrator for my company, I maintain a separate complete backup off-site that is synchronized weekly. One other issue with backups is that often they are made, but noone checks if the data can actually be restored from the backup. While I've never had reason to do a complete restore, I occasionally get a request to restore a file or directory that a user has accidentally trashed, so I periodically do restore individual pieces from the backups. For my personal music library, right now I'm using a pair of 250GB USB drives and a pair of 500GB drives. I keep one set at home and one at the office and synchronize them weekly. I'm almost out of space on the 500GB drives, so I may add another 500 GB pair. Hoiwever, with this much data, I'm starting to feel somewhat insecure with only two copies. (Well, I do have all the original CDs, but ripping, editing, encoding and tagging is a task I'd rather not repeat for stuff I've already done.) So likely, I'll make a third complete backup to be stored in my self storage locker. -- Timothy Stockman Timothy Stockman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8867 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19817 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Center line of the display is pretty much eye level with the viewing area. Tweeters of the Mains are slightly higher, with a slight donward angle. The tweeter of the CC is higher than viewing, and is tilted as much as possible downwards. From the main viewing area, the off axis is not bad. I tend to lie on the floor sometimes and off axis on the cc does come into play as dialogue can be indistinct at lower listening levels. (Next cc will be an inwall, or partial in wall with more ability to downward angle the tweeter. I have not seen anything like you mention. My plan was 2 fold (with the 2nd portion not being solid). Thanks, Bob The goal of this project was to obtain the maximum stereo nirvana for less than $2000 (the 3 Audiosource amps were bought used from ebay for $600). This project was in my head for years (since the previous speaker set), but it was jump started when I found a discharged 18 PVC pipe on a construction site ($17 to remove it from their hands). The principles behind the design are: - Minimum diffraction - zero baffle. - Minimum typical resonances - no parallel surfaces. - Maximum dampening - no passive crossover, good drivers (big magnet ). - Maximum dispersion (open soundstage) - zero baffle, low crossover frequencies (24 db/octave) - Phase alignment - 24db active crossover - Flat extended response - tunable active crossover - Serious dynamic - tri-amps for a total of 380W / ch on 8 ohm Drivers: - Tweeter: Scan-speak D2905/9300 - Mid: Audax HM130Z10 - Woofer SEAS L26RFX/P (H1209) 10 Aluminum Cone The result blows away my traditional generation 4 tower speakers. Comparatively speaking is like having removed the mud from the sound. The active crossover is great for DIYer (it took me months to fine tune it ). Tri-amps sound is simply effortless. The weakest point in most peoples system is the 89-cent builders spec outlet that they have their $600 custom power cord plugged into. If one has a stock power cord, they should spend a few bucks to get a Hubbell and if they do have the custom power cord they should spend $50 on a PS Audio Outlet. The other choices get more expensive like running 220 over to truly protect your equipment from lightening and brown power. Changing out ones outlet is a fairly easier and inexpensive modification. Is the outlet going to cause anyone to say WOW? I doubt it (unless it was bad or corroded), but ones equipment is going to be happier in the long run. Saw a system the other day with a new dedicated 20 amp 110 VAC drop on a magnetic breaker using the old outlet that was attached to what the new dedicated drop replaced to plug his $4000 power conditioner and $900 custom Power cord into. That just does not make any sense to me much less logical sense (bet his wife wanted all the outlets to still match). Is $50 too much to pay for an outlet when you just spent $6000 on a dedicated drop, custom cord, and power conditioner? That's less then one percent of the total cost for one of the best outlets available! Cheers, toscana toscana - indeed I was worried about signal degradation introducing the middleman headphone amp into the chain. I was certainly not expecting an improvement. But no, I hear absolutely no change in the way the AE5s sound. They sound the same, and they're amazing for the cost. The Creek HA makes itself utterly transparent, which is the way it should behave, in my opinion. And there's a *huge* difference in the quality of the sound coming out of the Grados (as opposed to connecting them directly to the AE5 loudspeaker output). All I have to do to listen to great quality headphone output is crank down the volume on the AE5 to zero, crank up the SB volume to 100%, and set up the volume level manually on the Creek. Sounds very, very sweet. So connecting the Creek amp was a great thing to do, even though of course I'd prefer the SB3 to have a better heaphone driver. I don't know - am I the only one that would gladly pay for a $600 version of the SB3 with upgraded DA and headphone parts? Amazing as the Transporter is, I just prefer the elegant little box approach of the SB3. -- pablolie pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19817 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19817 Question: Should there be a new forum for photos? - yes - no - maybe Here's a very minimalist and cost-efffective litte system I put together in the apartment I am spending my next yeatr in away from my trusty home system (Accuphase based, pictured somewhere else in this thread). The system consists of SB3- Creek OBH-21 Headphone Amp - Audioengine5 active speakers. On the left on the floor is the Grado RS-1 that I also use on occasion. On counted occasions, I must say I am amazed by the performance of the little Audioengine5. Away from view, behind the couch, is an Athena subwoofer that I got a tad worried the Audiengine bass may be lacking - but the subwoofer is turned to volume level 1 and to just kick in under 60Hz, so it's basically unused. From those interested in cables, the noteworthy and in my opinion truly advisable addition is the Analysis Plus Oval 12 between the left speaker (which has the amp built in) and the right speaker - I like spade connectors, and the included generic cheap cable in the A5 set did not inspire confidence. The Oval 12 makes a difference. It was a special online and I got it for $50 or so, and it looks much better. :-) Between the SB3 and the Creek OBH-21 I run the Cardas Quadlink 5 I had at home, and I upgraded the cable between the Cardas and the Audioengine5 with Analysis Plus Silver Oval. Nothing esoteric, would be out of balance in a system like this. The result is a system that allows me to truly enjoy my entire music collection far from home, and in fact thoroughly enjoy it. Which is fantastic, because one does listen to more music away from the everyday distractions of the household (like a wife that demands occasional attention :-) The SB3-Audioengine5 combo is a truly fantastic thing for people in my situation - true high quality, musical, defined, analytical, open sound for less than $700. Wow. It's a great time to be an audiphile. I still miss my home system, though, but this is a smart investment - I'll take it home and set it up elsewhere. +---+ |Filename: simplesystem.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3548| +---+ -- pablolie pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19817 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I prefer to keep it simple too! Though new components have crept into my system lately (subwoofer, DAC) but they have taken it to a entirely new level! Once you get all those CDs ripped (if ever!) you can simplify even more and lose the CD player. I don't even have one in my system anymore. If there's a CD I want to listen to and I don't have it on my computer then that's a good excuse to rip it, only takes a few minutes. A couple suggestions: - Take a look at Apple iTunes for Windows. It's a free download, has excellent integration with SlimServer, and Apple Lossless is nice (but proprietary). However with iTunes you can do a mass-conversion of all your files to WAV or AIFF if you want down the road. - Consider an external DAC. The CEC is simply sitting on my TV cabinet at the moment, no extra isolation and no Shakti Stone and it blows away my SB3 (stock, no mods, also running into the same DAC). The SB3 sounds confused and lacking in finesse in comparison. The Squeezebox sounds more impressive, the CEC sounds more like real live music and has a listen all day character. Also, how about that linear power supply? Did that make quite the difference? Thanks! My hunch was that the DLIII would be quite good after reading several posts and the article in TAS. The implementation turned out far better than I expected. This was an upgrade from the Chinese Zhaolu DAC, so I have a little bit of experience with which to compare. The sense of the room, the little sounds of bass strings, breath of the vocalist, all these are now in my room. Speaking of in the room imagery, the reviewers are not kidding. I am playing with my ripped CD collection and finding myself distracted by music all over again. I found the linear supply made a small but nice improvement over the stock wall wart when I used the SB3 analog outputs. I have not tested again with the external DAC to see if it continues to have a difference. I must say that the PS a fairly easy, fun, and inexpensive project to do, so in that sense it was worth it. Both the Zhaolu and the DLIII are improvements over stock SB3 outputs in my rather detailed system. The DLIII provides a significant improvement in detail and presence in my system. -- mark-e-mark mark-e-mark's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4726 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19817 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
