Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] USB Cables
When I moved to the UK I been with ntl for a brief period before Virgin took over. Service was OK for a price but then I've moved to house without 'cable broadband' so been given Virgin ADSL.. Omg this was worst nightmare.. It took 7 months and ombudsman to escape theirs contract and get money back for shocking 0.3 mbps service ..later with Entanet(under old ownership) same ADSL line supported 4.5mbps (mind you house was quite a distance from exchange) but yeah Virgin support were absolutely useless bunch of liars. Few years ago Vodafone came close in terms of hopelessness when they couldn't provide static IP. 3x Squeezebox Touch, 4x Squeezebox Radio, Squeezelite (RPi 3B with HiFiBerry DAC+Pro on OSMC), Material Skin Apk, Squeeze Commander, Logitech Media Server Version: 8.2.0 with Material Skin (Docker in DS218+) Jaca's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58187 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114088 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Routed from Portland to Seattle and then to Kansas city through interstate fiber feeds and paired commercial connections, 15. Received by a Lightwave Networks peering agreement router and then ingressed into their content distribution network datacenter, 16. Where a signal is sent to me that has been repeated from a coastal fiber endpoint such as Mae East, and then has crossed the Atlantic via an undersea fiber optic cable, 17. and repeat this complexity backwards to get into the BBC to their server farm, transcoding machines, digital studio workstations, serving audio to DJs with a system like Prophet or Zetta off a digital music datastore. Exactly what Ethernet cable is preventing me from hearing the music exactly like it would be heard in the studio or in another country? ftlight's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5294 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114088 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

A concise, readable and accurate discussion on why TCP/IP works so reliably can be found at http://www.myreadingroom.co.in/notes-and-studymaterial/68-dcn/853-error-control-in-tcp.html. I quote "TCP provides reliability using error control. Error control includes mechanisms for detecting corrupted segments, lost segments, out-of-order segments, and duplicated segments. Error control also includes a mechanism for correcting errors after they are detected. Error detection and correction in TCP is achieved through the use of three simple tools: checksum, acknowledgment, and time-out." The thing is, the higher-order CAT-X cables are physically built from a shielding and twisted-pair density factor to carry higher frequencies more reliably. Meaning more bits/sec down the line. If you try to shove 10GHz data down a CAT3 cable nothing will arrive reliably at the other end because the cable is not built to carry those frequencies. In a normal house, CAT5e or CAT6 is enough for Gigabit ethernet at the kind of cable lengths one normally finds at home. Error correction in TCP/IP s not guesswork. It's either retransmission or mathematical reconstruction. If you know that 3 + 5 + X = 9 then you don't guess the value of X, you calculate it to be 1. This is the biggest mistake Audiophiles make - they assume corrupt data has to be guessed when it is simply either re-sent down the line or else calculated based on the checksums sent together with the real data. It was the same crap when the CD came out and Audiophiles worried that CD players had to guess values for the 1s and 0s lost to scratches - in reality they were mathematically reconstructed with FULL accuracy. Period. That's why any claims about ethernet cables/switches/routers are total bx when it comes to audio data transcending them  philchillbill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=68920 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114088 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Funny that the last few metres of cable has such a big influence on the sound. The 1s and 0s have passed through kilometres of network cables and all kinds of routers, switches, noisy server environments and god knows what else, but it is still the last bit that changes the world. I purchased "so called" audio grade USB and Network cables at a hifi show. Wasn't expecting to hear any difference and I never tested them against normal cables to see, but I'm glad I bought them. They were on offer at the show and cost no more than the equivalent computer cables. The company admitted that they hardly ever sell any which is why they were practically giving them away. So, why am I glad I bought them? Simple, it makes wiring so much easier when the cable looks nothing like any of the others. What I am curious about is the categories on network cables. My audio network cables are Cat 8. I know Cat 8 supports longer distancing and better shielding but my question is what impact does shielding have in normal circumstances? As they were so cheap I thought I had nothing to loose as I use them in a location with loads of other equipment. I know things like microwave ovens can have a significant impact with interference but has anyone noticed an impact on lower specified network cables? I'm thinking in terms of drop outs or buffering etc.? The cheap cable often included with some dacs, I never even try, as the first one I ever had (cable) did not work at all. Age, ear wax and a large dose of "can't be arsed!" prevent me from hearing any changes, plus a change in listen habits and a reduce span of attention :(:p I have heard differences with speaker cable, a lot of speakers and amplifiers when I was more interested, and had the money and inclination to try different equipment. Hopefully, later this year, I'll start and sell of a lot of stuff i have in storage as it's mostly worth "not a lot!" ronnie Man in a van's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43627 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114088 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] USB Cables
A USB cable produced to meet proper specs will work perfectly unless it is broken. The only examples of badly functioning USB cables I've read about are from people buying strange "audiophile" USB cables, because some of these do NOT actually meet the normal specs of a cheap USB cable. Just remember, "there's a sucker (or audiophool) born every minute" (quote evidently mistakenly attributed to PT Barnum). *Home:* Pi4B-8GB/pCP7.x/4TB>LMS 8.1.x>Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio (all ethernet) *Cottage:* rPi4B-4GB/pCP7.x/4TB>LMS 8.1.x>Touch>Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (Radio WIFI) *Office:* Win10(64)>foobar2000 *The Wild: *rPi3B+/pCP4.0/4TB>hifiberry Dac+Pro (LMS & Squeezelite) *Controllers:* iPhone11 & iPadAir3 (iPeng), CONTROLLER, Material Skin, or SqueezePlay 7.8 on Win10(64) *Files:* -Ripping-: dbpoweramp > FLAC; -Post-rip-: mp3tag, PerfectTunes, TuneFusion; -Streaming:- Spotify garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114088 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
