[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Translation help

2019-07-12 Thread William Seidler
Gordon,

Both of these are for someone with the first name Gaspar.

The first can be found here
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/TER-AH-SANTABARBARA-B-1584-1591/TER-AH-SANTABARBARA-B-1584-1591_item1/P83.html
 and
I believe it is the 1590 baptism of Gaspar, son of Antonio Lucas and Maria
Luisa.

The second is a 1639 obituary of Gaspar Lucas (likely the same person in
the above baptism) and can be found here
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/TER-AH-SANTABARBARA-O-1607-1651/TER-AH-SANTABARBARA-O-1607-1651_item1/P79.html.

These are from the frequesia of Santa Barbara das Nove Ribeiras on Terceira
Island.

Is that something you are looking for?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Translation help Costa Pimental families

2019-06-19 Thread Janet Carminati
Hello all,

Mary - I have determined that I have two Manuel Sebastiao Pimentels in my
line and then one Sebastiao (Antonio?) Pimentel married to Anna de
Trinidade. My great great uncle was Manuel Sebastiao Pimentel (b Oct 22
1848 d May 4 1904) married to Maria da Gloria Pimental. Manuel's father
was also Manuel Sebastiao Pimental (not sure about birth date, married to
Maria de Rosario on Jan 9, 1845). Do you have these in your line?

Could anyone can help decipher some of the names in the below records as I
work to determine the relationships?

Death record Sebastiao Pimentel (bottom of pg 2)
http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/FLR-LF-FAJAZINHA-O-1840-1848/FLR-LF-FAJAZINHA-O-1840-1848_item1/P68.html

Marriage record for Sebastiao Pimentel - this might not be correct as I
cannot determine if "Pimentel" is listed (top of pg 1)
http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/FLR-LF-FAJAZINHA-C-1767-1833/FLR-LF-FAJAZINHA-C-1767-1833_item1/P224.html
I believe the names are:
Sebastiao's parents - Joao Pimental and ? Frietas
Anna's parents are Antonio Rosario and Maria da Trinidad

Baptism of Antonio (?)
http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/FLR-LF-FAJAZINHA-B-1812-1825/FLR-LF-FAJAZINHA-B-1812-1825_item1/P90.html
Father - Sebastiao Antonio Pimentel (?)
Mother - Anna da Trinidad
Paternal grandparents - Joao Pimental G? and Marianna de Freitas
Maternal grandparents - Antonio ? and Maria da Trinidad

Thank you all for the assistance!
Janet

Do you have any birth/death/marriage dates for your Jerome Sebastian
Pimentel? I have several Sebastiao Pimentels in my tree, from Flores, and
many of their male children were named (first name) Sebastiao Pimentel.
I'm wondering if there is a connection somewhere?

2018-10-25 Thread 'Sam (Camas, WA)' via Azores Genealogy
Hello Shakti; What a nice surprise to receive your email. Antonio Francisco
Catarino is my 2nd great grandfather. How are you related?

I am female, 72 yrs. and currently live in Washington State, USA and Mazatlán,
MX. And you? Do you have a tree posted anywhere that I can try to find our
connection on? I am on FTDNA as well as Ancestry.com.

Looking forward to comparing notes,

Hi Sam, I see we have the same relatives from Pedro Miguel.  We may be able to
trace where our families connect.    Sorry, I posted many months after you had

Jacki,

What I would do to get back into the swing of things (for whatever my 2
cents are worth).

I'd take my research to the 1800s. If your immigrant ancestor was born in
1875, I'd go back to 1875 and collect all of his siblings. Then I'd go back
to his parents and collect all the parents' siblings. There's no
abbreviations in that time period. Then work your way back in time. Since
you'll see the word "freguesia" written out 10 times, by the time you go
back 100 years, "freg^a" may ring a bell as "freguesia."Cheri

I originally answered your from my cell when I had a break between
students, so I couldn't see it all.

The left page clearly says 1761 and the right page says 1762.

Felicia, daughter of Antonio do Rego native of this? place of something
(probably the neighborhood), freguesia of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos and of
Maria Francesca native of Lomba de Maya (Maia) freguesia (can't read) born
on the 18 day of the month of December 1761. The godfather (padrinho) was
Francisco de Oliveira. No godmother was mentioned. Cheri

Dad native of this place. The church is Nossa Senhora dos Anjos. We don't
translate the chirches or villages or island. That would be like stating
someone is from Holy Faith in America. We just leave it alone.

Mom is a native of Lomba da Maia (old spelling of Maya. Use modern

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Translation Help Please -

2018-01-29 Thread Jacki Gentry
Good Morning,

One more bit of help with Felicia if you wouldn't mind, please. Does this
record say that Felica's date of birth is 18 Dec 1761? I thought it did at
first but I'm so rusty at reading this old handwriting, now I'm thinking it
may say the 8th. It also looks like it says 1762 at the header of the page
but it sure looks like the year reads mil sete centos sessenta e um.

I'm reading it as: Felica, daughter of Antonio do Rego of ___ parish of Our
Lady of the angels and Maria Francesca of the same parish __ on the 8th
or 18th day of the month of December 1761.

I can't make out much of anything after the year except there is the
mention of Francisco de Oliveria near the bottom

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-FAJADEBAIXO-B-1743-1764/SMG-PD-FAJADEBAIXO-B-1743-1764_item1/P171.html

(bottom left)

Thanks again
Jacki

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Translation Help Please -

2018-01-28 Thread Jacki Gentry
JR and Altino, thank you so much

The family members named, match the birth records I've found for both Thom
and Felicia. I was actually hoping this marriage record would mention their
ages and prove I had the wrong birth record for Felicia because I'm just
having a hard time accepting an age difference so big. According to my
birth records for them, he would have been 56 (born 18 Dec 1724) to her 19
(born 18 Dec 1761) when they married 3 Dec 1781. Unfortunately, I'm now
virtually certain I have the correct record. I get it, older men who wanted
to have families would have to find a wife young enough to bear children
but 37 years?yuk. The fact that his parents were both deceased makes
sense though.

*Altino*, thank you too for looking up the additional info. I'm not
familiar with Canto's index but your info does match the records I've found
at culturacores.azores.gov.pt

I will definitely be looking up the additional info you both posted as well.

Again, thank you both for taking the time to look all that up.

Jacki

The name is Noronha. It has noble heritage from Madeira. Now I know the short
form looks like Mai (Mae=mother), but it is meant to be [Mur.] I have seen this
many times, it stands for mulher. So, Joze Augusto Homem de Noronha e sua
mulher Dona Maria Jozepha da Silveira... Of course the spellings differ from

will go and take a look at the Death Register around the same time to see
if he made it or not. Thanks for your help!

I might want to guess either 30 or 31 January for the baptism date because

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Translation help - Manuel (Luiz) de Costa Baptism 1836 Lagoa

2017-07-15 Thread bsei2816
Joanne,

I've looked this over several times and believe the baptism date was left
off. It does say baptized in the parish of his parents, as well as his
paternal and maternal grandparents so you know everyone is from this same
parish. It also says the maternal grandfather, Manuel Pires, is the
godfather. The birthdate is 22 Jan 1832 (I see 1832 not 1836) so it can't
be before that. The next baptism was on 2 Feb 1832 so that gives a 10-day
window.

There is something odd about this book in that the last records are from
1832 even though it covers up to 1836. The pages are out of order. Image
2 that one would expect is from 1829 is dated 1834 and is marked as page
 178

Hi Joanne,

I don't see a separate date for the baptism. As I read it, the record says
Manuel was "born on the 22nd of January 1832 and was baptised in this his
parent's Parish, the church of Senhora do Rozarios where [his parents] are
natives just as his paternal and maternal grandparents [are natives]". It
then names the godparents and witnesses.

hope that helps,

:)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Translation Help: Margin notes on Marriage of Manuel (Luiz) de Costa and Maria do Carmo 1856 Lagoa

2017-07-10 Thread Joanne Mercier
JR,
the marriage is of *Manuel Luiz *(as he is known is subsequent documents
and the only family name I knew of until I started researching), son of
Luis de Costa Caixihno and Umbelina Thomazina de Jesus (de Costa
Pires) to *Maria
do Carmo* (Martins / dosSantos) on *4 February 1856 at Nossa Senhora do
Rosario in Lagoa*. The desendents in my family go by Luiz so finding the de
Costa surname was surprising but it appears to clear up a lot. Any info is
greatly appreciated.

Hi JGBC,

For abbreviations and Portuguese word lists, have a look at the info on
this site:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/research-aids-m---z/portuguese-word-list.html

The link will take you to a page with links to info on name abbreviation
and a very helpful word list. Explore the rest of the site for more useful
information on tracing your
Azorean ancestry.

This booklet is extremely useful too:

https://script.byu.edu/Documents/portuguese_paleography.pdf

good luck with your research,

The one you identify as Maria Terra I see as Rosa, daughter of João
Ferreira Goularte (using the abbreviations Ferr.a G.te). It is consistent
in both records that Ferr.a ends with a dot under a raised "a". The dot
signifies an abbreviation. If you were thinking this was Terra, I think

I could be wrong so I have attached the links to the CCA records so other

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Translation Help Please!

2016-03-13 Thread linda

Hi J,

Welcome to the group! And congratulations on finding those records :D

The dates in the 19th century records are typically written out in words.
Here's a clip of the information you asked for in Maria's record.

The birthday starts with the last word in the first line, "nasceo".
"...nasceo aos des e seis de Fev.ro de mil outo centos cincouenta, e cinco
em o dia vinte dad.o mez, e anno foi baptisada..."

so, Maria was born on the 16th of February 1855 and baptised on the 20th of
the same month.

If I read it right, Joao was born on 30 April 1851 and baptized on the 6th
of May.

The red arrows you added to point to the entries were really helpful. I
think the preferred protocol for posting records on this forum is to post a
link to the CCA records, though. It does make it easier to use the
built-in magnification and up-scaling to view the records on a variety of
browser platforms.

best of luck in your research!

Linda

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: translation help needed

Something was going on in 1958 because both of these notes were written on July
31, 1958. I don't see any reference anything happening to her at this time so
maybe she was just rejoining her native parish so they were updating who she
was.

The first note says that with the complete name of Maria de Egito Rodrigues
(Mary of Egypt?) she married on Nov 4, 1905 in Providence, Rhode Island to
Mariano Rocha de Lima, native of the Azores. The last part of the first note I
can't make out but believe it is a reference to a record source.

The second note says she was widowed on 13 Oct 1943 in São Pedro (Angra) and
references the obito.

As for those dates, I am told that dates are always written day/month/year and
they used to use Roman numerals for the month

On the left page, record no. 5, there is a note in the margin going into the
next page. I am having difficulty understanding what it says. It is for
Maria. Could someone help me translate? I think it is stating that she
married in Rhode Island in 1905 but I can't decide if that's april 11 and I
need the rest of the note.

Thanks in advance.

Eddie,
These are not twins. The father's names are similar but not the same. The
mother's names are different as well as the grandparents. I have seen twins

2016-01-29 Thread linda
hi Eddie,

Not twins, but the names are so similar it's easy to understand your
difficulty.

Manuoel, born on 7 June 1844
son of Antonio Silveira Cardozo & Maria Jozepha
paternal gps = Manoel Silveira Cardozo & Maria Catharina
maternal gps = Manoel [Alex?]andre & Maria Jozepha

Antonio, born on 10 June 1844
son of Antonio Cardozo & Maria de Sao Joze
paternal gps = Manoel Cardozo & Maria Francisca
maternal gps = Joze Silveira de Brum & Maria de Sao Joze

In the records where I've seen twins, it's been noted on the record-- look
for the word "gemeos/as".

Hi Barb, it looks like the groom's mother's name was omitted. Here's what
I see:

mil e Seis Centos Como Consta do 1.o baptizadas
desta Igr.a [] ... [witnesses, etc.]

I think the record is stating that the groom and bride were two of the
first to be baptized in that church, but I'm not certain. I does look like
you get their baptismal dates (yay!).

I hope that's helpful,

I provided links to the baptisms above. I only looked for them when I
realized that either I read the bride's baptism date wrong, the priest
mistakenly wrote 1600 instead of 1700, or the bride was 122 years old.
Finding the baptism in 1700 eliminated one of those possibilities.

The groom's mother's name seems to be omitted, but on the baptism it is
Maria Dias. The baptism also gives the father's name Domingos Gonçalves
Godinho.

How much vinho did that priest have

The marriage is 1715, the groom baptized in 1697 (so he's 18) and the bride
baptized in 1600, so she's 115 years old?!?!?!? Guess I'd search for her in
the 1690s!

You are going to have make note that priest made error abt baptism, as he
obviously meant 1700. I believe that name is Joam Roz Pais.

You guys are getting really good at reading the records. It was so

2015-12-26 Thread Cheri Mello
Liz,

You've heard about the 3 time periods of the records, right? You are in the
2nd time period.

The 2nd time period does not give the grandparents (3rd period does).

I've never seen the ages of the parents given in a baptism at all.

Collect all the siblings. If they are in the same freguesia, then check
that freguesia for the marriage. You can also check NEPS as a cross
reference. However, 1 or 2 freguesias from Faial are missing from that cite.

Hi Moinca,

I read the date as 16 december 1877.

His age appears to be 21 years old, and hers hers, 28 years old.

The bride's mother's name looks like Jacintha de Jesus.

best,

Linda

agree with what Shirley wrote, but I would lean more towards 70 years of age.
I cannot find where it says who he was married to as it seems to go directly
into his will. There is something about leaving something for his soul then
mentions a chapel (capela, 6th line from bottom of first page) of ?? for poor
children (I think it says crianças pobres on next line). The first line on the
second page identifies the executor (testamenteiro) as his son George Pedro

I also see the name Margarida on the sixth line from the bottom but do not

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Translation help/passport registry

2015-06-07 Thread Kimberly Reeve

I had no idea which island or village she is from. I only knew the Azores
from her marriage document. I just looked through every passport for the
year 1884 because I was fairly sure that is when she immigrated. This was
the only Anna de Gloria I found that year that was the right age. It's at
least a starting place. can you tell me what her profession is? It looks
like they wrote gen dom, some kind of domestic maybe? It also looks like
she traveled alone. I've seen entries that are families and this does not
look like those. There were notes in the Observances column, but it looks
like they were for the person above her. Her destination seems to be USA
and there is a small CA three could that be California?. Finally, the
ships name almost looks like Veronica which can't be right.

I just this past couple years have been brave enough to try research over
seas. I had good results with Sweden and am really just beginning
Portugal. I like doing it myself, it's like a puzzle as I found with
Sweden, it takes a bit of guidance to comprehend the records and get use to
the format. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi Kimberly,

Welcome! Here's a crib sheet for the passport page you posted to help get

after you find the right village.

The Veronica is not listed as ever arriving in the US after her passport
date. It arrived 31 Jul 1884, then does not show up again in records The
next ship she could have been on was the Acoriana, then the Adelia

The Anna da gloria Ferro that shows up in Ancestry ship list searches is
from Santa Cruz , Flores

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Translation help/passport registry

2015-06-07 Thread Kimberly Reeve
I did note that about the Veronica, I saw an arrival July 1884 and I did
see one for July possibly 1885 although there was some question about that
date. I'm interested in the positive search you had on Ancestry. I've
been a member there for some time and never had a hit on the passengers
lists for her. Could you link the record you found? Certainly, that too
is a possibility if the dates are right. I know absolutely that she was in
San Francisco and married by 1887 when her first child is born. Of course
the fact that many records burned in the 1906 earthquake does not make
things any easier.
