and Shirley's Bay has a bit at the mouth of Watts Creek. A Great Egret was
resting in a tree off the dyke. Lots of other land birds including
Golden-crowned Kinglet, Swainson's Thrush, Baltimore Oriole, Scarlet Tanager,
and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Further up river at Constance Bay there was some
mudflats with a few shorebirds, Greater Yellowlegs and Semipalmated Sandpiper.
The breeding Red-headed Woodpeckers were successful again and 2 juvenile birds
were observed at the "Old Burn Site" This is the 8th consecutive year the

[Ontbirds] Cackling Goose and Swamp Sparrows

2009-04-02 Thread Bruce Di Labio

Hi Everyone
Today, April 2nd there were 2 Swamp Sparrows out and about in the creek area
behind my house. Amongst the 1000s of Canada Geese on the Carp River, a
Cackling Goose was right out in the open. I got great looks at this bird and
could easily determine the size was much different. Other birds of interest
were a Great Blue Heron and a few Turkey Vultures.

[Ontbirds] Ottawa area: Iceland & Glaucous Gull, Northern Shrike, Bohemain Waxwing, Hoary Redpoll and early migrants

2009-03-10 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Lots of activity in the area, both winter birds and a few spring migrants.
Today birded various areas around Ottawa and noted a few Red-winged Blackbirds
back on territory at Britannia along with a few Common Grackle and American
Robin in the area. Near the corner of Barnsdale Road and Moodie Drive we
observed a large flock of gulls resting in a cornfield, 300+ Herring, 150+
Great Black-backed, 11 Glaucous and 4 Iceland Gulls. The birds flushed and were
later observed at the Moodie Drive ponds and the landfill site. A few Canada
Geese were also noted. A flock of 100+ Bohemian Waxwings were observed along
Grandview Road while 150+ were seen on Thomas Dolan Parkway. The Hilda Road
feeders were active with 100+ Common redpoll, including 2 Greater Common
Redpoll "rostrata subspecies", and 2 Hoary Redpoll. Snowy Owls appear to be on
the move north, I observed 5 individuals in the Ottawa area. Also, 2 Northern
Shrike were present along Carp Road near Carp. Yesterday there was a Merlin in
our backyard chasing siskins.

Good birding, Bruce

Directions: Directions: From Ottawa take Hwy 417 west to Hwy 416. South on the
416 to exit 66 (Fallowfield Rd.) Right (west) on Fallowfield to Moodie Dr.
Left (south) on Moodie, go past Trail Rd. on your left and Cambrian Rd. on your
right until you come to a very large sand & gravel operation on the left (east)
side of the road. ***PLEASE NOTE*** - do NOT cross the gate to the sand &
gravel operation. This is private property, and most of the birds can be
well-viewed from the road.
The landfill site is located on Trail Road. There is no access but the gulls
can be viewed from Trail Road just south of the main entrance.

[Ontbirds] Eastern Ontario: Great Gray Owls, Snowy Owls, Bohemian Waxwing, Pine Grosbeak

2009-01-21 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Great Gray Owls are still being found at various locations in eastern Ontario.
Unfortunately none have been staying around for too long. Yesterday, 2 were
observed, one along Hwy. 60 between Madawaska and Barry's Bay at 5:15pm,
sitting on a hydro wire, while another was observed along a ski trail east of
Ottawa. Today there was one present along Thomas Dolan Parkway east of
Dunrobin. There were 3 Snowy Owls in the Kinburn area, one along Kinburn Side
Road and two along Galetta Side road near Hwy.417. Yesterday, my wife observed
one, in south Kanata, along Fernbank Rd, between Eagleson and Terry Fox Drive,
one was sighted along Rideau Road near Ramsayville Road, and another behind the
Ottawa Airport. The finch numbers continue to increase, today I observed 200+
Pine Grosbeaks in the Kinburn-Carp-Dunrobin area, and over 400+ Pine Siskin.
Also there was a flock of 40+ Bohemian Waxwing along Rifle Road off Carling
Ave.

[Ontbirds] Ottawa area: Gray Partridge, Bohemian Waxwings and White-winged Crossbills

2009-01-16 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Spent a few hours birding around Kanata/Carp area today. There were 4 Gray
Partridge along Maple Grove Road near the Sensplex Centre. Check around the
bottom any of the pine or spruce trees along Maple Grove Road starting at Terry
Fox Drive. There was a flock of 75+ Bohemian Waxwing near the corner of Old
Carp Road and Huntmar Drive. Small flocks of White-winged Crossbill continue to
feed in the village of Carp along with Pine Siskin, Common Redpoll and Pine
Grosbeak. Drive around the area east of Carp Road. It appears that Great Gray
Owls are still moving through the region. There has been at least 3 sightings
of the Great Gray Owl during the past week, west of March Road/Dunrobin Road
but none relocated. One was found along Torbolton Ridge Road, one on Old Carp
Road near Huntmar Drive and another off March Road near Peter Robinson Road.
All were during the late afternoon. At dusk today I observed 50+ Wild Turkeys
roosting in a few deciduous trees along Huntmar Drive near Bradleyside Road.

[Ontbirds] Amherst Island birding

2009-01-14 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone,
Spent the past two days birding Amherst Island. Weather conditions were
highly variable including snow, wind and extremely cold tempuratures. Despite
all of that, the birding was excellent. Yesterday, January 13th we observed 6
Northern Saw-whets, 3 Boreals,
9 Long-eared and 4 Short-eared Owls. Open field birding was difficult due to
the blowing snow but 5 Snowy Owls were observed late afternoon after conditions
had changed.

morning in the "Owl Woods". A total of 5 Northern Saw-whets, 1 Boreal, 19
Long-eared and 8 Short-eared Owls were observed. Other species included, a few
small flocks of White-winged Crossbills, 1 Northern Shrike, 1 Hermit Thrush and
1 Red-bellied Woodpecker. A quick check of the island roads produced 14 Snowy
Owl, 27 Rough-legged and 21 Red-tailed Hawk, 3 Northern Harrier, 3 American

[Ontbirds] Ottawa Area: Red-shouldered Hawk, Bohemian Waxwing, White-winged Crossbill

2009-01-02 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Today, January 2nd, I observed a Red-shouldered Hawk near the corner of Huntmar
and Old Carp Road. It was sitting in a tree watching over an active feeder.
This is the same location a Red-shouldered Hawk over wintered last year. There
were a few flocks of Bohemian Waxwings, 40+ at Huntmar & Old Carp road and 150+
near Carling and Hertzberg Road. White-winged Crossbills are moving around in
good numbers, there were 200+ in the Antrim/Kinburn area, small flocks in Carp
area plus 400+ in the Calabogie area.

Good birding, Bruce

[Ontbirds] Amherst Island : Boreal Owl

2008-12-30 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Spent the morning birding the "Owl Woods" on Amherst Island starting at 8:00am.
Our first run through yielded only 1 Northern Saw-whet Owl, 7 Long-eared Owls
and 3 Short-eared owls hunting over the open fields. On the second run we found
an additional 3 Northern Saw-whet Owls and few more Long-eared Owls. As we were
leaving I decided to check one more tree, a spruce which I had observed Boreal
in previous years and to my surprise there it was sitting quietly. It was a
"lifer" for a number of the birders who were still searching the woods. At the
east end of the island we observed 1 Snowy Owl on the KFN property. The "Owl
Woods" also had a number of finches including 16 White-winged Crossbill, 3 Pine
Siskin and 20+ Common Redpoll. There was 1 Northern Shrike at the north side
entrance road to the woods. We did have a Great Horned Owl along CR4 near
Taylor Kidd Road driving down and on our return we observed 3 Eastern Bluebirds
along CR 4 at Millhaven Road.
We ended the day in Ottawa with our 7th species of owl, Northern Hawk-Owl on
Grandview Road.
Good birding, Bruce

Directions:Amherst Island: Located 18 km. west of Kingston. Exit off Hwy. 401
at exit
593 (County Rd. 4, Camden East) and drive south to the very end (Millhaven).
Turn right on Hwy. 33 and drive 100 metres until you see the sign for the
Amherst Island ferry. The ferry (20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the
half hour and leaves the island on the hour. Cost is $8.00 Canadian round
trip. There are no gas stations on the island. There are restrooms on
the ferry, and at the island ferry dock. The East End K.F.N. property
is at the easternmost part of the island on the east side of the Lower
Forty Foot Road. To reach the Owl Woods, turn left (east) at the
four-way stop sign by the general store and drive 3.4 km along Front Rd.
to the (seasonal) Marshall Forty-Foot Rd.
Marshall Forty-Foot Rd. is across the road from house #2320. Drive
along Marshall Rd. to the mid-way point, where there is an "S" in the
road (1.2 km, look for the K.F.N. kiosk which had owl observing ethics).
Park in the gravel lane or off the road edge.

[Ontbirds] Eastern Ontario: Bohemian Waxwings & Snowy Owls

2008-12-20 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Late this afternoon while driving back home from the Pembroke CBC we did a
little bit of "drive by birding" along Hwy 17/ 417 to Kanata. It was a great
drive with 3 Snowy Owls, 2 near the intersection of Hwy. 417 and Kinburn Side
road and 1 at Hwy.417 and Galetta Side Road. Two flocks of Bohemian Waxwings
were observed, 1 just east of Renfrew (40+) and a second flock 925+) near
Antrim. We searched many of the back roads for Great Gray Owls with no luck but
did manage to find 3 Great Horned Owls sitting up and in the open at dusk.
Unfortunately, we did not see any of these species on the Pembroke CBC !

[Ontbirds] Eastern Ontario: N.Hawk-Owls, Boreal Owl and others

2008-12-18 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Yesterday afternoon and this morning I birded Amherst Island. Yesterday, late
afternoon, I observed 12 Short-eared Owls along the road into the Owl Woods on
the north side. They were sitting in the trees as I drove to the parking area.
In the Owl Woods I observed 1 Boreal Owl, 1 Northern Saw-whet Owl and numerous
Long-eared Owls. At dusk I squeaked in a Great Horned Owl. There was 1 Snowy
Owl at the east end of the island, KFN property.
This morning, I arrived at the Owl Woods at dawn and there was lots of
activity including a few flocks of Common Redpoll, 2 Pine Siskin, 3
White-winged Crossbill and 1 Red Crossbill. All these birds were flying over
the Owl Woods calling. I spent a few hours covering most of the woods and
observed 3 Northern Saw-whet Owls, 20+ Long-eared Owls, with a number very
tame, 2 Short-eared Owl flying over the woods and 1 Northern Shrike along the
road south of the woods. There were 4 Snowy Owls, 24 Rough-legged Hawk, 7
Red-tailed Hawk and 6 Northern Harrier scattered around the island.
On my return home I observed a Northern Hawk-Owl along Hwy. 7 and Cameron Side
Road, about 12 kms west of Perth. This individual, first observed by Steve
Mercer, and has been present in the area since December 16th. Also along Hwy. 7
I saw 1 Great Horned Owl sitting in the open and a Northern Shrike, all between
Cameron Side Road and Perth.

[Ontbirds] Ottawa area: Barrow's Goldeneye, N. Mockingbird and Yellow-rumped Warbler

2008-12-10 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Ontbirders
Today, December 10th, despite the wintery conditions I spent a couple of hours
birding around the Ottawa area. There was a female Barrow's Goldeneye present
on the Rideau River near the Rideau Tennis Club. It was in a mixed flock of
male and female Common Goldeneye. Watch for the distinctive head shape and
"pumpkin" orange bill. There was also two female Common Goldeneyes with
yellow-orange bills. Great for comparison. The Northern Mockingbird was still
present on Grandview Road sitting in a tree near house # 236, this individual
has been there since at least December 4th. The Yellow-rumped "Myrtle" Warbler
which has been in the ravine behind my home in Carp since November 26th is now
coming regularly to my suet feeder. It was present this morning at 11:30am.
Yesterday, December 9th there was a Northern Flicker hanging around the Ottawa
Duck Club feeders near the corner of March Valley Road and Riddell Road.
Good birding, Bruce

Directions: From Ottawa take 417 east to the Vanier Parkway and exit
north. Follow parkway to Donald Street and turn left (west) and continue
to River Road. Turn left on River Rd. and then right on Olga St. which is a
dead
end. Park and walk over to the open area of water along the Rideau River. There
are a small number of Common Goldeneye's and lots of Mallards. If you
require additional information, please email me privately.

[Ontbirds]Niagara Area Birding

2008-12-02 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Spent the past 3 days birding the Niagara River between N.O.T.L and Chippawa.
Overall the gull watching was good and we saw most of the birds reported by the
OFO group. We did have 2 Little Gulls, one at the flyby on Nov. 29th at NOTL
along with 5197 Bonaparte's Gull. There was also 3 Red-throated Loons. The
biggest surprise was a very late Blue-headed Vireo on Nov.30th in Chippawa near
the corner of Thomas Str. and Chippawa Parkway. We observed the vireo in a
mixed flock of Dark-eyed Junco, Black-capped Chickadee, Golden-crowned and 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet. There were a few Tufted Titmice and Red-bellied
Woodpeckers in the area. Also 1 Eastern Bluebird and 2 White-winged Crossbill.
Yesterday, December 1st checked Sir Adam Beck and had 3 Iceland, 1 adult
Thayer's and 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls. Enroute home made a brief stop at
Stoney Creek and saw 2 female King Eiders off Millen Ave along with 1000's of
Long-tailed duck and all 3 scoters. If you require additional information,
please email me privately.
Good birding, Bruce

[Ontbirds]Ottawa area: Glaucous and Iceland Gulls

2008-11-25 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Yesterday, November 24th, spent a few hours in the afternoon birding the ponds
on Moodie Drive and along Trail Road. The "white-winged" gull numbers are on
the increase, had 22 Glaucous and 16 Iceland Gull. Most were first winter birds
but did see a few adults of both species. Also, 2 adult Lesser Black-backed
Gull. There was an immature Peregrine hunting ducks without any success along
Barnsdale Road.
Good birding, Bruce

Directions: From Ottawa take Hwy 417 west to Hwy 416. South on the 416 to
exit 66 (Fallowfield Rd.) Right (west) on Fallowfield to Moodie Dr. Left
(south) on Moodie, go past Trail Rd. on your left and Cambrian Rd. on your
right until you come to a very large sand & gravel operation on the left
(east) side of the road. ***PLEASE NOTE*** - do NOT cross the gate to the
sand & gravel operation. This is private property, and most of the birds
can be well-viewed from the road.
The landfill site is located on Trail Road. There is no access but the gulls
can be viewed from Trail Road just south of the main entrance.

[Ontbirds] Ottawa: Cackling Goose, Lesser Black-backed, Thayer's, Iceland and Glaucous Gull

2008-11-20 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Spent a few hours this afternoon birding the Moodie Drive ponds and surrounding
area. The gull activity was excellent with 7 species. Highlights included 5
Lesser Black-backed, 9 Glaucous, 7 Iceland, and one 1st winter Thayer's Gull. I
was surprised at the low number of Great Black-backed Gulls, only 330+. For the
past 10 years numbers now would be over 1000. The cornfields in the area had
1000's of Canada Geese plus 6 Cackling and 14 Snow Geese. Along Barnsdale Road
there was a flock of 300+ Snow Bunting.
Good birding, Bruce

[Ontbirds]Presqu'ile P.P.: Purple Sandpiper & Snowy Owl

2008-11-17 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Yesterday, November 16th, birded Presqu'ile P.P. for the day. Overall, cold and
windy but we did managed to see 1 Purple Sandpiper in a flock of 18 Dunlin and
7 Sanderling on Gull Island. The bird was very tame. There was a juvenile Snowy
Owl present on Sebastopol Island. Late lingerers included 21 American Pipit on
Gull Island and 6 Eastern Bluebirds on Huff Road near the railway tracks.
Good birding, Bruce

Directions: (courtesy Fred Helleiner) To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park,
follow the signs from Brighton.
Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid
that is available at the Park gate. Visitors to Gull Island should be
prepared to wade through shin-deep water in which there is often a swift
current and a substrate that is somewhat uneven. It should also be noted
that, because duck hunting is given priority on Mondays, Wednesdays,
Fridays, and Saturdays, Gull Island, High Bluff Island, Owen Point, and
part of the calf pasture are not available for bird-watching on those days.

[Ontbirds]Ottawa: Snowy Owls

2008-11-15 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Ontbirds
Snowy owls are in the south in small numbers. Yesterday, Nov. 14th at least 3
juvenile individuals were observed in the Ottawa area. All birds appeared in
good health, flying and perching. One was in the Fallowfield/Greenbank Road
area, one in the Shirley's Bay area, and another in the Greenbank/Baseline
area. Since this south bound movement began in the latter part of October, a
number of Snowy Owls have been brought into the Wildlife Care/Rehabilitation
Centers in weakened condition. It appears they are arriving from the north in
bad shape due to lack of food, maybe lemmings. If you do observe a Snowy Owl,
please take into consideration that the individual may not be in the best
shape. If you approach it for better viewing or photographing, you may be
contributing to its demise. Snowy Owls have been observed in Ontario, Quebec,
Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, the "Great Lake States" and
some north eastern states.

Good birding, Bruce

[Ontbirds]Eastern Ontario: Johnstown: Cave Swallows

2008-11-15 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Just a quick update on the Cave Swallows that were at Johnstown near Prescott.
Yesterday, November 13th I observed 3 CAVE SWALLOWS flying around the large
grain elevators just west of the international bridge. The swallows spent most
of the time fly-catching and occasionally would disappear into the building. I
watched them until 1:05 pm and they were still flying around despite the rain.
No reports from yesterday, Nov.14th. These birds are part of a major north-east
North American fallout. Birds have been recorded around the Great Lakes, most
of the New England States, the Canadian Maritime provinces, including
Newfoundland. The weather conditions still look good for a few more days but
the cold weather will be moving into our area early next week. If you have an
opportunity to look for Cave Swallows in eastern Ontario, I would recommend
spending a few hours along the St.Lawrence River between Ivy Lea and the
Moses-Saunders Power Dam at Cornwall. Also I would like to thank Gerard
Phillips for posting his observation of Cave/Cliff Swallows on November 12th.
I'd been looking for a week from Cornwall to Prince Edward Point. My first for
Canada.
good birding & good luck, Bruce

[Ontbirds]Amherst Island Birding

2008-11-07 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Birded Amherst Island yesterday morning Nov. 6th, overall there are still lots
of raptors on the island. In the "Owl Woods" and at the Jack Pine Plantation we
found 6 Long-eared and 1 Barred Owl. Didn't locate any Northern Saw-whet Owls.
There was still lots of finch activity including 50+ White-winged Crossbill,
30+ Pine Siskin, 8 Common Redpoll, and 1 Pine Grosbeak. At the east end of the
KFN property 1 Short-eared Owl was observed hunting. At the gravel point 4
Black-bellied Plover, 1 Greater Yellowlegs and 4 Dunlin were present. The male
Eurasian Wigeon was still present at Elevator Bay/ DuPont Plant.
On Nov.5th, while driving down along Hwy. 401 between Morrisburg and Kingston
we observed plenty of road kill- 6 Northern Saw-whet Owls and 2 Eastern
Screech- Owls, 1 grey and 1 red morph. I'm not sure if this is just a
coincidence or if the time change (darker earlier) along with a higher volume
of traffic is responsible for this increase in mortality. To top it off, while
driving home to Carp on Nov. 6th, we picked up a gray morph Eastern Screech
Owl, sitting on the shoulder of County Road 32 just north of Gananoque. It
survived the night and is on its way to the Wild Bird Care Center.

Good birding, Bruce

Directions: Located 18 km. west of Kingston. Exit off Hwy. 401 at exit

Northern Harrier, 6 Rough-legged Hawk, 5 Tundra swan, 5 Black-bellied Plover,
and 1 adult Lesser Black-backed Gull.

[Ontbirds]Ottawa: Barrow's Goldeneye & Red-throated Loons

2008-10-31 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Birded along the Ottawa River from Dick Bell Park to Remic Rapids Lookout this
morning. Visibility was excellent and I observed 2 Red-throated Loons, 1 off
Dick Bell Park and the other off Deschenes Lookout. At Remic Rapids I observed
a male Barrow's Goldeneye feeding in the rapids. This is likely one of the
regular overwintering birds that returns each fall.

Good birding, Bruce

Directions: Dick Bell Park is located along Carling Ave. just west of Andrew
Haydon Park. Remic Rapids is located along the Ottawa River Parkway just west
of the north end of Parkdale Ave. If you require additional information, please

[Ontbirds]Female Goldeneye Identification

2008-10-30 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Ontbiders

With the influx of Goldeneyes during the past week along the Ottawa River I've
been closely looking through the flocks for both male and female Barrow's
Goldeneyes. Today, October 30th, I observed an orange-yellow billed female
Common Goldeneye at Shirley's Bay. This is the 3rd individual that I have
observed during the past week and I've had a few local birders report possible
female Barrow's that have turned out to be Common Goldeneyes. The bill colour
of female Barrow's is only an aid to the identification and it is not
diagnostic. Most important is to look at the head shape. The head of the female
Barrow's Goldeneye has an oval shape created by a steep forehead, flat crown
and elongated hind neck feathers like a mane. The latter gives the appearance
of a swept back crest, similar to the male Barrow's and female Hooded
Merganser. The head shape of the Common Goldeneye lacks the " puffiness" of the
female Barrow's. It has a rounded rather than flat crown and a sloping
forehead.

For more information see identification article below.

[Ontbirds]Ottawa: Brant, Glaucous and Iceland Gulls and migrants

2008-10-30 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Ontbirds
Spent a few hours this morning birding along the Ottawa River between
Britannia Pier and Shirley's Bay. Overall still lots of water birds moving
through the region. At Shirley's Bay there was a good concentration of
waterfowl including 1 Tundra Swan, 750+ Ring-necked Duck, 350+ Hooded Merganser
and 250+ Common Goldeneye. Still small numbers of Northern Pintail, Northern

[Ontbirds]Ottawa: Golden Eagle, Bald Eagle, Peregrine, migrants

2008-10-30 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Everyone
Yesterday's early winter storm, produced some great birding along the Ottawa
River from Britannia to Constance Bay. With strong NW winds many species were
passing through the area quickly! There was a small raptor flight including 1
adult Bald Eagle, 1 immature Golden Eagle, both off the Shirley's Bay parking
lot, 1 immature Peregrine off Britannia Pier, and 7 Rough-legged and 5
Red-tailed Hawks at various points over the river. Surprisingly, no flight of
scoters or loons but 22 Brant and 16 Long-tailed Duck off Dick Bell Park. With
the snow cover there were good concentrations of Snow Bunting, 200+, American
Pipit, 20+ and a few Lapland Longspur along open patches of grass and beach
areas along the river at Constance Bay. A few late lingerers were noted
including 1 Savannah Sparrow, 1 Eastern Meadowlark, both at Dick Bell Park, and
1 Sanderling and 3 Dunlin at Andrew Haydon Park.

good birding, Bruce

Directions: Britannia Pier, Andrew Haydon Park, Dick Bell Park and Shirley's

[Ontbirds]Amherst Island: Brant

2008-07-04 Thread Bruce Di Labio

Hi Everyone
Yesterday, July 3rd I spent a few hours birding Amherst Island. The
waterlevels on Lake Ontario are very high and there was little exposed
suitable habitat for shorebirds. Even the gravel bar on the KFN property was
greatly reduced. Highlights included 1 Brant, 1 White-winged Scoter, 3
Greater Scaup, 2 Least Sandpiper and 1 Lesser Yellowlegs. There were a few
hundred Tree Swallows lined up along the fence lines and 2 Upland Sandpiper
were noted flying over. Earlier in the morning Doug McRae and I did a quick
check at Presqu'ile Provincial Park from Beach #1 to Owen Point and had 1
Lesser Yellowlegs flyover.

   good birding, Bruce

Directions: Amherst Island: Located 18 km. west of Kingston. Exit off Hwy.
401 at exit 593 (County Rd. 4, Camden East) and drive south to the very end.
Turn right on Hwy. 33 and drive 100 metres until you see the sign for the
Amherst Island ferry. The ferry (20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the
half hour and leaves the island on the hour. Cost is now $8.00 round trip.
There are no gas stations on the island. There are restrooms on
the ferry, and at the island ferry dock. The East End K.F.N. property
is at the easternmost part of the island on the east side of the Lower
Forty Foot Road.
Because of liability issues, visitors to the Kingston Field Naturalists'
property at the east end of Amherst Island MUST be accompanied by a KFN
member. For KFN contact information or how to become a member, please visit
http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/ ."

Directions: Presqu'ile P.P.: To reach Presqu'ile P. Park, follow the signs
from Brighton.

Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid
that is available at the Park gate. Access to the offshore islands is
restricted at this time of year to prevent disturbance to the colonial
nesting birds there.

2008-06-27 Thread Bruce Di Labio

Hello Ontbirders
Yesterday, June 26th at 1:00pm I observed the male Eurasian Wigeon at
the pond on Moodie Drive. It was with a flock of 5 American Wigeon. At the
Trail Road Landfill Site I saw a first summer Lesser Black-backed Gull
feeding and an immature Bald Eagle flew over a few times and flushed the
gulls. Saw my first juvenile Ring-billed Gulls of the season at the landfill
too.

   good birding, Bruce

There is no access but the gulls
can be viewed from Trail Road just south of the main entrance.

shorebirds were noted but southbound ones should start passing through our
region soon!
At Embrun Sewage Lagoon the late lingering breeding plumage Horned Grebe
was still present in the north central cell along with 5 Ruddy Ducks. Also
in the Alfred area, 1 Lincolns and 1 Clay-coloured sparrow were observed at
the Alfred Bog Boardwalk. While 2 Gray Partridge were seen along Giroux Rd.
& Conc. 10 and 3 Upland Sandpipers were near the corner of Hwy. 17 and
Lafaivre Rd.

   good birding, Bruce

DIRECTIONS: From the town of Alfred go east on Highway

2008-05-25 Thread Bruce Di Labio

Hello Ontbirders
Today while birding Amherst Island we had a impressive flight of Brant
totalling 3300+. We arrived on the island at around 1:00pm and headed to the

proceeded north. For the next 3 hrs 18 flocks passed by ranging in flock
size from 50+ to 600+ and all heading north after passing the east end of
the island from the west.
While birding the Chaffeys Locks area in the morning we talked to Paul
Martin who had observed 2000+ Brant in a number of flocks heading north
earlier in the morning.

On the KFN property, east end, there were 103 Short-billed Dowitcher, 16
Wilson's Phalarope, 40+ Dunlin, 50+ Least Sandpiper, and 1 Black-billed
Plover.

   good birding, Bruce

Directions: Amherst Island: Located 18 km. west of Kingston. Exit off Hwy.
401 at exit 593 (County Rd. 4, Camden East) and drive south to the very end
(Millhaven).
Turn right on Hwy. 33 and drive 100 metres until you see the sign for the
Amherst Island ferry. The ferry (20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the
half hour and leaves the island on the hour. Cost is now $8.00 Canadian
round trip. There are no gas stations on the island. There are restrooms on
the ferry, and at the island ferry dock. The East End K.F.N. property
is at the easternmost part of the island on the east side of the Lower

[Ontbirds]Chaffeys Lock: Golden-winged Warbler

2008-05-01 Thread Bruce Di Labio

Hi Ontbirders,
Spent the morning birding the Chaffeys Lock Road/Opinicon Road areas.
Overall bird activity was slow due to the cool temperatures. A total of
seven species of warblers were observed including Yellow, Yellow-rumped,
Black & White, Black-thr. Green, Northern Waterthrush, Pine Warbler and the
highlight a male Golden-winged Warbler. We observed it singing and sometimes
feeding low to the ground along the Pangman Reserve Trail. It was colour
banded, likely from the area. Other "new" arrivals included Least
Flycatcher, Great Crested Flycatcher and Warbling Vireo.

   good birding, Bruce
Directions: Chaffeys Lock/Opinicon Road: Opinicon Road is north of
Kingston. From Hwy. 401 take county road 10 (exit 617) north towards
Westport for about 20 kilometres. Roughly 1 or 2 kms. past Perth Road
Village on the right is Opinicon Road. Turn right and drive towards
Chaffeys Lock making regular stops along the way to listen. Anywhere
along Opinicon Road is can be good. The old railway line or the Rideau
Trail system opposite Skycroft Campgrounds are great for birding.
From Ottawa take Hwy. 417 west to Hwy.7 to Carleton Place. Turn left
onto Hwy.15 and follow past Smiths Falls and continue towards Kingston.
After passing Crosby start watching for Chaffeys Lock Road on your right.

[Ontbirds]Presqu'ile P.P.: Red-throated Loons,waterfowl & migrants

2008-03-30 Thread Bruce Di Labio

Hello Ont. Birders

Spent the weekend March 29 and 30 birding Presqu'ile Provincial Park. Still
felt and looked like winter. Visibility over the water was excellent. There
was a nice variety of waterfowl - 550 Canvasbacks, 1250 Redheads, and
increasing numbers of Greater Scaup, Lesser Scaup, Ring-necked Ducks, and
Hooded Mergansers. Highlights Saturday included a Northern Shrike at the
Calf Pasture; 2 Merlins at Lighthouse Lane and Paxton Road; 2 Ruddy Ducks
off Salt Point; a very vocal Carolina Wren along Bayshore Drive; 1 very
unhappy Tree Swallow at the Calf Pasture; and a Hoary Redpoll at #186
Bayshore Drive.

The bay froze overnight so on Sunday morning the ducks were pushed close to
the shore allowing for excellent views. On Popham Bay we found 3
Red-throated Loons and 3 Double-crested Cormorants. Land bird migration was
limited to small flocks of Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles and
American Robins. We heard an Eastern Meadowlark off Huff Road.

Good Birding,

Bruce

To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton.
Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid
that is available at the Park gate. Access to the offshore islands is
restricted at this time of year to prevent disturbance to the colonial
nesting birds there.

[Ontbirds]Amherst Island: Barred & L.E. Owls, waterfowl

2008-03-21 Thread Bruce Di Labio

Hi Ontbirders
Spent the morning birding Amherst Island with my son Ben. There was lots
of activity along the south shore with impressive numbers of waterfowl
including 4500+ Greater Scaup, 2600 Common Goldeneye and 1400 Long-tailed
Ducks. We also observed small numbers of Ring-necked Duck, Bufflehead,
Redhead, Red-breasted Merganser, and Lesser Scaup. In the "Owls Woods" we
located 2 Barred and 1 Long-eared Owl. The big surprise was an Amercian
Woodcock in a small patch of open grass which Ben almost stepped on! It flew
a few feet and landed on another small patch of grass under a spruce tree.
Hawk sightings included, 12 Rough-legged and 3 Red-tailed Hawk, with most
either at the east end (KFN property) or just south of Stella. On our drive
down yesterday, we had a Northern Saw-whet Owl road kill, along Hwy. 401
near exit 672 and on Tuesday (return from Presqu'ile) I had 2 Barred Owl
road kills, 1 near exit 579 and another near exit 593. The road into the Owl
Woods is still covered with snow and we walked in from the south shore road.
If we have any mild weather I'd recommend water proof foot wear for walking
around the woods.

   good birding, Bruce & Ben

Directions: Amherst Island: Located 18 km. west of Kingston. Exit off
Hwy.401 at exit 593 (County Rd. 4, Camden East) and drive south to the very
end

[Ontbirds]Algonquin Park Birding

2008-02-17 Thread Bruce Di Labio

Hi Ontbirders

Birded Algonquin Park late afternoon Saturday February 16th. Most activity
was centered around the feeders at the West Gate and the Visitor Center and
included Hairy Woodpeckers, Pine Grosbeaks and Red-breasted Nuthatches. A
walk along the Spruce Bog Trail produced one Boreal Chickadee. It called
only once and was observed feeding in the Spruce trees. A Northern Shrike
was seen outside Huntsville.

Visited the park again today, February 17th. Birded Highway 60 from the West
Gate to the Visitor Center. Made a number of stops along the highway with
very few birds except for Common Ravens and Black-capped Chickadees. Again,
most of the activity centered around the feeders at the West Gate and
Visitor Center. Birds were also drawn into areas such as the Spruce Bog
parking lot and the gate at Opeongo Lake Road where people had scattered
bird seed. We walked about 2 kilometers from the gate down Opeongo Lake Road
and were fortunate to find a very tame male Black-backed Woodpecker working
the trunk of a spruce tree. Other interesting finds were a Pine Marten off
the Spruce Bog boardwalk and 4 Gray Jays on Opeongo Lake Road. During the
rainy afternoon, we walked the Spruce Bog trail and relocated the Boreal
Chickadee.

   good birding, Bruce

The Algonquin Visitor Centre will be open on Saturday, Sunday,
and Monday this weekend, from 10 to 5. Birders should check the
feeders there, and at the West Gate.

Directions: Courtesy Ron Tozer
Algonquin Park is three hours north of Toronto, via Highways 400,
11 and 60. Follow the signs, which start in Toronto on Highway 400.

From Ottawa, take Highway 17 to Renfrew, then follow Highway 60

to the park. Kilometre markers along Highway 60 in the Park go from
the West Gate (km 0) to the East Gate (km 56). Permits and information
are available daily at both gates throughout the winter, including the
Algonquin Information Guide showing locations discussed here.

The Visitor Centre (km 43) is open on weekends (now 10 to 5 through
February). Recent bird sightings and information, plus feeders, can be
found there. Birders visiting during the week are welcome to contact staff
