One suggestion I would make is to go into your device manager after hitting alt+enter on your My Computer icon on your desktop, and control+tabbing over to the hardware tab, then tabbing over to the device manager button. Within the device manager, arrow through your computer's components until you see the list of USB devices, and delete them all. Just arrow through each one of them, and press your delete key and remove each and everyone of them. Once you've accomplished this task, reboot your computer, and let Windows self-detect the USB ports and install the drivers for them. Once this is done, use the Windows Update feature, and update your Windows, just to make sure that the version of the drivers for your USb devices that your computer is using is up to date. Once you've discovered that it is up to date, plug your MP3 player back into your computer. When the dialog box pops up asking you what you want to do, indicate that you want it to do nothing, and make sure the checkbox to do this task every time you plug in this device to the computer is checked, and tab to the ok button. Once done, have a look and see if the MP3 player is there. Now, these instructions are for Windows XP machines, so if you're running anything other than a XP machine, such as Vista or Windows 7, then I'm afraid you'll have to Google your particular problem and operating system, as I'm sure there will be no shortage of steps for you to take in doing this. Re: [Blind-Computing] FS activate
I'm somewhat frustrated as well. I've recently gone through all my keys in the past couple of weeks with a new computer purchase, and upgrading from VISTA to Windows7. I have found out, however, that if you do a system restore, when you notice you've lost your activation, it will return from the previous restore point. That some consolation, but, certainly not a solution. I need more keys because I'm upgrading my laptop/work computer. I have to wait 60 days? I've always experienced excellent customer service from Freedom Scientific, and I expect no change. I'm sure they are working on resolving this issue with the same furvor and frustrations we are experiencing. I never had instability with my Authorization before VISTA and/or Windows7, so, I'm inclined to think the whole issue revolves around the instability of these operating systems, and Freedom Scientific, and JAWS users, are left with trying to cope with Microsoft's mess. I've always paid for all my software, from my OS,utilities, security, and my screen reader etcetera. I don't engage in any piracy. Last week I bought a high-specs Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 and loved all its features but finally had to return it because I was having several issues with Jaws version 11.. I thought it was just the laptop. Any simple change I make with it like updating the OS or drivers would trigger a Jaws video driver error and that terrible thing about Jaws not being authorized. So, wasted some authorization count on that. This week, I received my customized laptop from Dell which is a Studio 16 XPS. Again, I cannot make any change to the system without triggering that error message about Jaws video driver error and Jaws is not activated. But OK, I can work with Jaws tech support to resolve these. I am patient for a solution and so I thought. But while a solution is being work out, I still need to work so I need to have my activation count reset so I can fall back to my old system and reinstall Jaws on to it. I emailed FS explaining the situation and I get an offensive email that I am only being given 1 activation count because there has been a reset request within the past 60 days. This in spite that I have been in communication with a tech support person. I emailed them again explaining that I'm not at fault etcetera but I am being stonewalled despite that I have been respectful all the way in all my communication. Moreover, I checked my activation count and there was 0 not even the promised 1 activation. What am I suppose to do now? I feel so violated. I also need to work. Is there really no redress for things of these sort? I just paid for my SMA and I'm supposed to be good for until version 13. Jim -- From: Silly Goose sillygoo...@gmail.com Sent: Monday, November 09, 2009 3:10 AM To: Blind-computing blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: [Blind-Computing] More Windows Live Mail questions and observations First, I am having two main problems with Windows Live Mail. . As far as I can tell there is no first letter navigation of folders. For example I save many emails in folders for future reference. Previously to move emails to specific folders in OE I could just use control shift V and then choose a folder from the list by first letter navigation which was very quick. Now, on my new Windows 7 64 bit laptop running Jaws 11 and Windows Live Mail there is no first letter navigation of the folder list. You have to tab several times and then find the folder with the tree list which is very tedious. I don't think it even remembers the last folder you sent an email to so it is the tree view every time. And I have not discovered how to have the auto complete work when adding the contacts sending email. It is confusing in that it seems to put each separate account into its own folder list with its own Inbox, Sent mail, etc. Sure would love a tutorial on exactly how it is set up. And it is very, very sluggish when moving through a list. I thought Windows 7 64 bit was supposed to be faster...but faster than what? It is much slower than my Dell XP laptop. I may end up giving my husband the new Acer except then I would have purchased Windows 11 ($240) for nothing since Jaws 9 works great on my Dell.. There are some good points about WLM, however. I was able to import my messages from OE. I just copied the message storage file to the Windows 7 laptop and was able to navigate to that folder when importing. It did put them in a separate list but at least they are there. Secondly it is set up very much like OE. The message rules work the same way as in OE as does the find message command. When setting up accounts it was much easier. To add my Gmail I just had to put in the address and password. Then I did not check to set it up manually and it automatically configured it. It adds a folder called Gmail and one for my other email and in these folders you can see the email that is stored online before it is downloaded. It seems to sync the mail so I think I am able to download the same mail to both laptops. Anyway, does anyone know about first letter navigation of folder lists? I surely think this is a really important feature that is very necessary. Any advice appreciated. [Blind-Computing] VISTA UAC
I know we've covered this ground before, so, please forgive me. I'm a new VISTA user, (worst mistake I've made in years), and need to know two things. 1. How to silence UAC. I've disabled it, but keep getting a windows security notice each time I turn on my computer, so, I've reactivated it to get rid of the message. It seems to me there was a program mentioned that would silence or prevent UAC from coming up every time you installed, or made changes. 2. (yes, I know, I'm getting greedy), I have a program that is blocked that I want to start-up. Currently, I have to open the system tray, click on Blocked Startup programs, then click on the name of this program and give it permission to run. It you click on tools, then options, there is a tab, or section which deals with junk email. You can choose to have it moved to a junk folder, which if checked, creates the folder, or, by default, it is set to send them to the deleted folder. This is the same in OE and Windows Mail. If you get no indication that the device is seen, look in Device manager and see if the usb drvices have errors or if there is an unknown device in the other branch of the tree view. I could not directly respond to your email because Windows Mail thought your message was fishing! I did notice that this software was installed as part of JAWS 11 beta! Not sure why JAWS needs this type of USB security! Have they incorporated the dongle version into JAWS 11? I noticed this was now part of JAWS 11 because it failed during installation. I discovered that the only way it would install without error was to turn off Trend Micro Security (antivirus and firewall) software that came with my Dell. I am very uncomfortable with this software for many reasons. Most importantly, I have been having USB problems on this Vista computer ever since I installed JAWS 11 beta! My computer keeps making those USB plug in / unplug sounds all the time! my USB keyboard stops responding randomly! Unacceptable! I noticed that Vista or Windows 7 were not mentioned in Mathew's link. I know that may not be the same version installed, but it is not a good sign. I did go into the Device Manager and reinstall all of the USB devices using the laptop keyboard. That only helped for a short time. I don't even think I need to run JAWS 11 beta for my USB keyboard to go haywire. I am going to report this to FS and uninstall the beta! I wanted to play more with ResearchIt, but being able to type is more important. I hope getting rid of JAWS 11 also completely removes Sentinel completely! [Blind-Computing] Windows Vista Help
I recently purchased an upgrade from windowsXPProfessional to Windows Vista Business from the Microsoft store site. It was a download/install, and all seem to go well. The Windows Update, however, will not download and install Windows Vista and Microsoft Framework updates. It will, however, download and install :optional updates. I've checked out the error codes, and they all lead back to the Microsoft knowledge base which gives me no suggestions that I haven't already tried. I've tried to re-install, I've downloaded the service pack one, but it says service pack is already installed. I've downloaded service pack 2, but it says I need to install service pack 1 first. You may then access the same file from any computer you have installed the software, and it automatically syncs the file with your other computers. If you are not at one of your computers, you can, of course, access the file from the Internet. This saves me from having to save to a flash drive, then, copying it to my various computers, then, recopying after I've worked on the file. You can also share your file with others without having to attach to an email. You get 2GB storage for no charge. Of course, if you want more, they have monthly subscriptions. I like free! If anyone is interested in checking it out, just visit: https://www.getdropbox.com/referrals/NTE1ODU1Mzk5 Yes, that is a referral link, I receive no money, just extra storage space. Anyone using that link also receives an additional 250m of space. For those who do not wish to use the referral link, visit: http://www.getdropbox.com http://www.getdropbox.com/ Again, if this is inappropriate, please accept my apology.
