I still am satisfied with magic Jack as my sole telephone service save for
my cellular service. I have been so since 08. All I can advise is that
you give it a try. You can always return it before 30 days if you aren't
satisfied. I paid 60 dollars for a five year license. I now only pay 20
dollars monthly for my internet service, and 10 dollars monthly for cable
service. You can't beat that with a white stick I say.

when you can hear people but your upload speed isn't good enough and
other speople say you are breaking up. Expense is certainly a reason to
do it, but we wasted our money. It worked for a month, and then we had
all kinds of problems and had to pay reconnection fees for comcast.

Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] external Mp3 player question

So it sounds like it's a standard generic MP3 player, so
it should plug in
just fine, and, from your last message, your computer is
detecting it, so

there should no be issues.

One suggestion I would make is to go into your device
manager after hitting
alt+enter on your My Computer icon on your desktop, and
control+tabbing over
to the hardware tab, then tabbing over to the device
manager button.

Within the device manager, arrow through your computer's
components until

you see the list of USB devices, and delete them all.

Just arrow through each one of them, and press your delete
key and remove

each and everyone of them.

Once you've accomplished this task, reboot your computer,
and let Windows
self-detect the USB ports and install the drivers for
them.

Once this is done, use the Windows Update feature, and
update your Windows,
just to make sure that the version of the drivers for your
USb devices that

your computer is using is up to date.

Once you've discovered that it is up to date, plug your
MP3 player back into

your computer.

When the dialog box pops up asking you what you want to
do, indicate that
you want it to do nothing, and make sure the checkbox to
do this task every
time you plug in this device to the computer is checked,
and tab to the ok

button.

Once done, have a look and see if the MP3 player is there.

Now, these instructions are for Windows XP machines, so if
you're running
anything other than a XP machine, such as Vista or Windows
7, then I'm
afraid you'll have to Google your particular problem and
operating system,
as I'm sure there will be no shortage of steps for you to
take in doing

this.

Let us know how it went for you.

Scorpio

I don't understand. The players are free if you are blind. The
Library of congress locks their publications to their players because
they are publishing materials that sighted people normally would need
to pay for. They are giving these materials to the blind for free.
But they can only do that if they can limit the ability to distribute
this copy righted material freely on the net. Or at least that is the
way i understand NLS. If i have gotten it wrong, please enlighten me.

Chris,

I can't remember exactly, but,

highlight or place your cursor on the said folder, then, alt+enter, or
shit+f10 for properties, then security tab, then advanced settings, then
owner, and make sure, or add your user name account as the owner.

You've probably already tried this, but just in case, I thought I'd send
it along.

Good luck, God bless, and happy Thanksgiving.

We have a copy of the drivers, but, we think that they are for

Is there a difference and if so, how can we find an accessible site to

We are using Jaws 7.00 and System Access.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Means you can test software on a completely different platform than
your normal configuration since as far as it's concerned it will be
running on that virtual machine, and this means you can do things
like configure virtual amounts of memory, processors and their speed,
as well as other parts of hardware configuration, and operating
systems etc. etc.

For example, if I wanted to make use of some software for use on a
version of linux, I could run the virtual linux machine within/from
my windows XP machine and still test it without having to have a
separate machine to load with the linux operating system as such, and
in terms of testing, you can also just close the virtual machine
down, and go back to it's previous state and start off all over
again, or use it to make changes temporarily, etc. etc.

Vista and later guests; JAWS can't load the mirror driver

I never had instability with my Authorization before VISTA
and/or Windows7, so, I'm inclined to think the whole issue
revolves around the instability of these operating systems,
and Freedom Scientific, and JAWS users, are left with trying

to cope with Microsoft's mess.

I don't know how I feel; I couldn't describe it any other
way but really
bad. I've always paid for all my software, from my
OS,utilities, security,
and my screen reader etcetera. I don't engage in any
piracy.

Last week I bought a high-specs Toshiba laptop with
Windows 7 and loved
all its features but finally had to return it because I
was having several
issues with Jaws version 11.. I thought it was just the
laptop. Any simple
change I make with it like updating the OS or drivers
would trigger a Jaws
video driver error and that terrible thing about Jaws not
being authorized.
So, wasted some authorization count on that. This week, I
received my
customized laptop from Dell which is a Studio 16 XPS.
Again, I cannot make
any change to the system without triggering that error
message about Jaws
video driver error and Jaws is not activated. But OK, I
can work with Jaws
tech support to resolve these. I am patient for a solution
and so I thought.
But while a solution is being work out, I still need to
work so I need to
have my activation count reset so I can fall back to my
old system and
reinstall Jaws on to it. I emailed FS explaining the
situation and I get an
offensive email that I am only being given 1 activation
count because there
has been a reset request within the past 60 days. This in
spite that I have
been in communication with a tech support person. I
emailed them again
explaining that I'm not at fault etcetera but I am being
stonewalled despite
that I have been respectful all the way in all my
communication. Moreover, I
checked my activation count and there was 0 not even the
promised 1

activation.

What am I suppose to do now? I feel so violated. I also
need to work. Is
there really no redress for things of these sort? I just
paid for my SMA and
I'm supposed to be good for until version 13. Folks, it is
me that is having
the trouble this time but it could easily be you next
time. So, any thoughts

on what I can do?

 Thanks
 Vic

I have the same difficulty. I did notice that when you want to move an
email to a folder, hit control Shift V then arrows down to the folder you
want. And Boy do I miss the auto complete of names. I'm not sure how to
get rid of this problem. As it stands now, when I want to send an email, I
hit control N, for new message,
Then, shift tab to the too button, and hit enter. Then, I have to arrow to
the contact I want, hit space bar, and tab to the too button, and then, to
OK and after that, I can then send the email. There's got to be a better
way. frown. I don't like WLM at all.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] More Windows Live Mail questions and
observations

First, I am having two main problems with Windows Live Mail. . As far as
I can tell there is no first letter navigation of folders. For example I
save many emails in folders for future reference. Previously to move
emails to specific folders in OE I could just use control shift V and
then choose a folder from the list by first letter navigation which was
very quick. Now, on my new Windows 7 64 bit laptop running Jaws 11 and
Windows Live Mail there is no first letter navigation of the folder list.
You have to tab several times and then find the folder with the tree list
which is very tedious. I don't think it even remembers the last folder
you sent an email to so it is the tree view every time. And I have not
discovered how to have the auto complete work when adding the contacts
sending email.
It is confusing in that it seems to put each separate account into its
own folder list with its own Inbox, Sent mail, etc. Sure would love a
tutorial on exactly how it is set up.

And it is very, very sluggish when moving through a list. I thought
Windows 7 64 bit was supposed to be faster...but faster than what? It is
much slower than my Dell XP laptop. I may end up giving my husband the
new Acer except then I would have purchased Windows 11 ($240) for nothing
since Jaws 9 works great on my Dell..

There are some good points about WLM, however.
I was able to import my messages from OE. I just copied the message
storage file to the Windows 7 laptop and was able to navigate to that
folder when importing. It did put them in a separate list but at least
they are there.
Secondly it is set up very much like OE. The message rules work the same
way as in OE as does the find message command.
When setting up accounts it was much easier. To add my Gmail I just had
to put in the address and password. Then I did not check to set it up
manually and it automatically configured it. It adds a folder called
Gmail and one for my other email and in these folders you can see the
email that is stored online before it is downloaded.
It seems to sync the mail so I think I am able to download the same mail
to both laptops.

Anyway, does anyone know about first letter navigation of folder lists?
I surely think this is a really important feature that is very necessary.
Any advice appreciated.

Marek,

I was exploring the Remote Desktop feature with JAWS 10, and was able to
connect to another computer, however, since it didn't have JAWS, it didn't
work. I contacted Freedom Scientific, and they told me that I had to pay

You can, however, try connecting using JAWS Tandem feature, which is

computer.

[Blind-Computing] VISTA UAC

I know we've covered this ground before, so, please forgive me.

I'm a new VISTA user, (worst mistake I've made in years), and need to know two
things.

1. How to silence UAC. I've disabled it, but keep getting a windows security
notice each time I turn on my computer, so, I've reactivated it to get rid of
the message. It seems to me there was a program mentioned that would silence
or prevent UAC from coming up every time you installed, or made changes.

2. (yes, I know, I'm getting greedy), I have a program that is blocked that I
want to start-up. Currently, I have to open the system tray, click on Blocked
Startup programs, then click on the name of this program and give it permission

Will just say the one thing I can't find so far, and really like in winamp
is the ability to find out how much of a track has played/passed, and how
much is left.

Also, trying it out on a DVD image I have here, while it can nivagate
chapter to chapter, it doesn't seem to really be able to let me select
differing audio tracks during playback, and also looking into selecting
differing subtitle languages, but will try a bit more, but apart from
that, definitely very nice/simple.

Re: [Blind-Computing] help finding the spam folder in OE

2009-09-16 Thread Stewart A Overbey Jr.
It you click on tools, then options, there is a tab, or section which deals
with junk email. You can choose to have it moved to a junk folder, which if
checked, creates the folder, or, by default, it is set to send them to the
deleted folder. This is the same in OE and Windows Mail.

Hi Albert,
First when you say it isn't recognized do you mean it doesn't give you that
sound you usually hear when a device connects? Or do you get that noise but
just get no drive letter assigned to the drive?
Also, have you tried other ports on that machine?
If you get no indication that the device is seen, look in Device manager and
see if the usb drvices have errors or if there is an unknown device in the
other branch of the tree view.
You can also rescan for hardware changes with the applications key menu when
on the tree view.
If the usb group is closed then there are probably no errors in that group.

A friend of mine, just purchased a u sb flash drive, so that she can have
the ability to download books on it from the nls site. However when she
inserts the u sb flash drive into her Hp desktop computer, It won't
recognize it. However, if she tries it on her other girlfriends computer
which is also the same hp model computer, it recognizes it. They both use
window eyes on there machines. In a case, or where cases like this occur,
what do you need too do or fix in order too get the computers which both
have windows xp home on them, too get the port on the non working computer
too recognize the u sb drive.

Hi Matthew,

After Jaws announces Jaws for windows is ready Jaws says nothing. I
press insert + T for say title Jaws announces start, tab 1 time Jaws
announces start button, tab a 2nd time Jaws says Task bar clock, tab a 3rd
time Jaws says Norton Ghost or whatever is the 1st thing in the system tray,
then the 4th time there is the desktop. This is not a problem, but more of
a curiosity because my computer has never done this and just started doing
this about a week and a half ago. I have tried uninstalling anything that
had been newly installed to no avail. I thought it might be a focus issue
and that is why I disabled Autosizer because Autosizer has been known to
cause focus issues from time to time. Now here is the wierd thing. I
rebooted just before replying to you and my computer is back to opening on
the desktop window. I was just curious if anybody else had ever had this
happen to them and what they might have done to correct it. Thank you very
much for your response. Take care.

Jaws acts up like this all the time and misreads screen content, so maybe
trying to unload jaws with insert F4 then reloading might do the trik. I
reload jaws about 10 times a day--its a real pain to have to deal with.

I'm going through emails in outlook express but each time I finish

I even went to the edit menu and hit enter on mark as read but I'm
still getting unread after reading a message.

Any help with this would be very much appreciated.

 Many thanks in advance.

Re: [Blind-Computing] question Centinel System Driver

2009-09-10 Thread Stewart A Overbey Jr.
I am using jaws on several different computers at home and work. Every
computer I use, running Jaws 8 and above, not including 11 which I haven't
downloaded, has this driver. I've never known it to cause any trouble, so
the issues must be exclusive to JAWS 11.

Thanks Mathew for performing that simple lookup. I could not directly
respond to your email because Windows Mail thought your message was fishing!

I did notice that this software was installed as part of JAWS 11 beta! Not
sure why JAWS needs this type of USB security! Have they incorporated the
dongle version into JAWS 11? I noticed this was now part of JAWS 11 because
it failed during installation. I discovered that the only way it would
install without error was to turn off Trend Micro Security (antivirus and
firewall) software that came with my Dell.

I am very uncomfortable with this software for many reasons. Most
importantly, I have been having USB problems on this Vista computer ever
since I installed JAWS 11 beta! My computer keeps making those USB plug in
/ unplug sounds all the time! my USB keyboard stops responding randomly!
Unacceptable! I noticed that Vista or Windows 7 were not mentioned in
Mathew's link. I know that may not be the same version installed, but it is
not a good sign. I did go into the Device Manager and reinstall all of the
USB devices using the laptop keyboard. That only helped for a short time.
I don't even think I need to run JAWS 11 beta for my USB keyboard to go
haywire.

I am going to report this to FS and uninstall the beta! I wanted to play
more with ResearchIt, but being able to type is more important. I hope
getting rid of JAWS 11 also completely removes Sentinel completely!

Try control panel, then system, then device manager, then display adapters,
then your brand, hit enter on your adapter's name which should bring up the
properties windows. Choose the driver tab, then roll-back driver.

[Blind-Computing] Windows Vista Help

2009-08-26 Thread Stewart A Overbey Jr.
I recently purchased an upgrade from windowsXPProfessional to Windows
Vista Business from the Microsoft store site.

It was a download/install, and all seem to go well.

The Windows Update, however, will not download and install Windows
Vista and Microsoft Framework updates. It will, however, download and
install :optional updates.

I've checked out the error codes, and they all lead back to the
Microsoft knowledge base which gives me no suggestions that I haven't
already tried.

I've tried to re-install, I've downloaded the service pack one, but it
says service pack is already installed. I've downloaded service pack
2, but it says I need to install service pack 1 first. Before going
through the nightmare of trying to contact Microsoft via the phone, I
thought I ask for suggestions here.

Thanks for any thoughts you might have,

[Blind-Computing] dropbox

2009-07-22 Thread Stewart A Overbey Jr.
I'm not sure if this is appropriate for this list, and
please forgive me if it is not.

I recently came across a service that I find extremely valuable.

It is called dropbox, and for the most part takes the place of my
flash drive.

Just install it on each of your computers, then save your working
files in the directory which it places in your my documents folder.
You may then access the same file from any computer you have installed
the software, and it automatically syncs the file with your other
computers. If you are not at one of your computers, you can, of
course, access the file from the Internet.

This saves me from having to save to a flash drive, then, copying it
to my various computers, then, recopying after I've worked on the
file.

You can also share your file with others without having to attach to
an email.

You get 2GB storage for no charge. Of course, if you want more, they
have monthly subscriptions. I like free!

If anyone is interested in checking it out, just visit:

https://www.getdropbox.com/referrals/NTE1ODU1Mzk5

Yes, that is a referral link, I receive no money, just extra storage
space. Anyone using that link also receives an additional 250m of
space.

For those who do not wish to use the referral link, visit:

http://www.getdropbox.com http://www.getdropbox.com/

Again, if this is inappropriate, please accept my apology.

Sincerely,

Stewart A Overbey
