You only need to zip if there are multiple files,
that you are wanting to send at once.

Glad it worked for ya.
This is an interesting topic because, like when I put something from my
laptop into a folder I've named transfer, which is going to my desktop xp
machine, this does not have to be zipped.
I guess cause I'm not needing to download it, just grab it out of the
transfer folder of the xp computer, just swapping I guess.

You and I have shared much and sometimes we zip and then we unzip, knew that
would catch yall's attention,lol

The exact wording is "copy public link"; when you enter that it copies the
actual link to the clipboard, then you can paste it wherever you'd like to
share it. It's not so necessary to zip the files first though some recommend
it with MP3s as they tend to open when doubleclicked (pressed enter on); in
this case if you want to rather save rightclick/save via the context menu
instead.

Hi.
The information on your hard drive will be deleted.
However dropbox stores all your information on their servers so you will
get

it back the next time you sign in.
I would suggest making a backup just in case I'm wrong.

Hi.
The information on your hard drive will be deleted.
However dropbox stores all your information on their servers so you will get
it back the next time you sign in.
I would suggest making a backup just in case I'm wrong.

I actually spent a lot of time being confused about this too, so, here's a tip:

When you select that create link or add link, or whatever it is after pressing
the applications key, the link will magically appear in your clipboard where
it's ready to be inserted into whatever document or Email you're using it in.
I never did find anything saying this in the Dropbox instructions, and to me at
least, it was far from obvious.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Dropbox help creating links

2012-03-13 Thread Mike & Barbara
Hi Samson

Below are 2 ways to create an http link.

Example #1, using the file menu;

1. You select / highlight the file in your dropbox\public folder and press
the alt+f key to bring up the files menu. 2. Down arrow to dropbox and press
enter. arrow down to copy public link and press enter.
3. Then you can then paste the link in to an email message.

Example#2, using the application key / context menu;

Wait till Dropbox says all files up to date then:
1. Open the "My Dropbox" folder.
2. Open the "Public" folder.
3. Select the file, press the applications key, down arrow or press d
for "Dropbox", open the submenu with right arrow or enter, down arrow or
press c until you hear "Copy Public Link". Press enter on " Copy Public
Link ". By pressing enter right here, you have created a link that has been
copied to the clipboard by the Dropbox program.
4. Now, create a new email for whoever you want to have this Dropbox file
sent to.
After you have addressed the email and written whatever message in the edit
field, press your paste keystroke, control + V, and the download link will
be pasted into the email. When whoever gets the email, all they have to do
is click on the link and a download dialogue box will open to download the
file.

Hope this helped. Take care.
Mike

Now this is another question, it makes a difference answer ,if you have
folders in your drop box that you are sharing with another person, once they
take out that file it's gone from yours.
Now to answer the other way,the person that you are sending the link to
should let you know that they have it,in order for you to remove it from
your drop box.

Drop Box is not optimized exclusively for speed! It does use some
tricks to speed up updates to files to make it more efficient. It is
designed to replicate it's contents in the background. It's Public
folder is just a great bonus. It is specifically designed not to impact
your normal use. If you want to share files at maximum speed, perhaps
you should use a different solution.

Re: [Blind-Computing] dropbox

2011-06-27 Thread julie
I am confused. I have a drop box icon on my desktop called My Drop Box.
Then in my documents I have:
drop box (when I open that there is a folder called My Drop Box which has
within it my shared folders, public, photos, desktop ini, getting started,
etc.
Then further down in my documents is My Drop Box which has the same folders
as the icon My Drop Box when opened has. Can any of these be removed? When I
tried, the program wouldn't sinc or send files. Perhaps I removed the wrong
set of folders or should leave all there?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Daleen,

The option your looking for is under the network tab in dropbox preferences.
you access this by going to the system tray, right-clicking on your dropbox
icon and selecting preferences. Note that you may have to use your jaws
cursor to click on the tab to bring the options into focus

Hi Daleen,

I think your standard broadband linespeed in SA is too slow to
effectively implement that option. The Standard dsl lines in
South-Africa have a download speed of approximately 40 kbps and upload
speed is about a quarter of that.

I believe it's about ten times slower than in Europe and the US.

Re: [Blind-Computing] dropbox help

2010-11-10 Thread Trish

Well guess that all depends on the amount of storage you have.

One thing though, like I have a folder and if someone puts something in
there, after it's all downloaded, I can copy it and put it in other folders
I share with someone else, I do not have to have it redownloaded again..
Of course, this again applies to the amount of storage you have, so
sometimes I have to wait till other's have removed it from a folder before
sharing it with someone else, but overall, it's a very easy fast program..

I tried that and it works fine. The problem is I think in order to share a
folder, the other person has to download dropbox. Is that correct? With
the public folder, I am assuming that they just click on the link, and
they

can play it, read it... Am I understanding correctly? I am in the music
business, and sometimes people would like to hear clips of my music in
order

to decide if they want to hire me. If I can send them this public link, I
would think they could listen to the music.

Candy,

What works for me is to create a new folder in the drop box folder. Move
the files I want to share to that folder. Then go back to the root "drop
Box" folder, arrow or highlight the folder just created, then hit your
application key, then hit enter on "drop box sub menu," then hit enter on
"share this folder." you should be able to take it from there.

I just duplicated the steps to ensure I was giving you the correct
information. Let me know if you need further help.

I have asked this question before. People have answered me, but I still
can't get it right. I have put a file into the public folder. Then I do
an alt F. I go to dropbox submenu. I click on where it says copy public
link, but when I go to paste that link some place, there is nothing
there.
Am I leaving out a step. I left it alone for a while, but now I'm back
at
it again. Thanks for any suggestions. Has anyone had problems with

Re: [Blind-Computing] dropbox and public folder

2010-02-04 Thread Candy Lowe
I tried that and it works fine. The problem is I think in order to share a
folder, the other person has to download dropbox. Is that correct? With
the public folder, I am assuming that they just click on the link, and they
can play it, read it... Am I understanding correctly? I am in the music
business, and sometimes people would like to hear clips of my music in order
to decide if they want to hire me.

2009-12-03 Thread Silly Goose
I never bother to start the Dropbox program. I just add files to the folder
and it syncs them. The second computer is not always on but it updates
automatically when I boot it up.
If both computers happen to work on the same document both are saved with
a word disputed in the document title.

Is the My Dropbox folder still in your My Documents folder? I just access
my Dropbox by adding files or updating files from that folder. I have it
synced to two computers so I know it works since they both have the same
updated info. I have even put shortcuts from the Dropbox folder on both
desktops so I can keep things like my grocery list constantly updated on
either computer.
I have never accessed the Dropbox from the start menu although it is
there.
By the way, I really love the Dropbox since it keeps both computers
synced and the info is also online in case of a major catastrophe. And it
is free.
My only mistake was accidentally setting up a second account when hooking
up the new computer and ended up with them not synced. But there is a way
to unlink an account and link another so I got them both on the same
account. The other account is still active and I could probably store
things in it that I don't use often since I would have to link and unlink
the two accounts. But it would be extra space.

Hi Milos,
The application must be running in order to upload the files to the
server.

Additionally, if you are synchronizing files between machines,
the application must be running on the other machines in order for the
files

to be downlloaded from the Drop Box server.

2009-12-03 Thread Silly Goose
Is the My Dropbox folder still in your My Documents folder? I just access my
Dropbox by adding files or updating files from that folder. I have it synced
to two computers so I know it works since they both have the same updated
info. I have even put shortcuts from the Dropbox folder on both desktops so
I can keep things like my grocery list constantly updated on either
computer.

I have never accessed the Dropbox from the start menu although it is there.
By the way, I really love the Dropbox since it keeps both computers synced
and the info is also online in case of a major catastrophe. And it is free.
My only mistake was accidentally setting up a second account when hooking up
the new computer and ended up with them not synced. But there is a way to
unlink an account and link another so I got them both on the same account.
The other account is still active and I could probably store things in it
that I don't use often since I would have to link and unlink the two
accounts. But it would be extra space.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Dropbox strange problem

  Hi all,
I have a strange problem with the dropbox application. A few days after
I installed dropbox the shortcuts from the start menu are deleted. So in
the start/programs/dropbox sub menu, there is nothing. I reinstalled the
program, but it happened again. And that is only the case with Dropbox. So
what to do to prevent it happening all the time?

  Best regards!

I did not see any time limitations. Since it is Microsoft, it could be
until they find a way to make money. I suppose they hope you like the
service, but want more space. They will sell you more space.

I like free storage as well! Microsoft offers two different free storage
solutions.

The one I am currently using is Lie Mesh at mesh.com. It provides 2 GB of
free space. You download some software that once installed, sits in the
System Tray and adds a mesh item in the context menus (right click) of
Windows Explorer. If you use the Applications key on a folder, it will
allow you to add it to Live Mesh. This means that this folder will be
synched to your mesh.com space and other computers you have that are set
to

use this service. There are a few advanced options that are difficult to
set with JAWS. I have not had to deal with this since I do not use these
features. I find this a good way to automatically make an off site backup
of vital folders! It also makes these files available and synched with
your

other computers, securely share them with friends and access them from any
computer. If you have a Microsoft Live mail or hotmail accounts, you are
already registered. I have my daughter use this service to backup her
art.

This not only makes a backup, but if she forgets her homework, she can
download it from school. All without thinking about it!

The second Microsoft freebee is SkyDrive. It provides an additional 5 GB
of

free storage. This does not have the integration features. In fact, I
think you upload and download files from a browser window. I have not
used

this yet, but it is nice to know there is an additional 5 GB of free space
available.

please forgive me if it is not.

I recently came across a service that I find extremely valuable.

It is called dropbox, and for the most part takes the place of my
flash drive.

Just install it on each of your computers, then save your working
files in the directory which it places in your "my documents" folder.
You may then access the same file from any computer you have installed
the software, and it automatically syncs the file with your other
computers. If you are not at one of your computers, you can, of
course, access the file from the Internet.

This saves me from having to save to a flash drive, then, copying it
to my various computers, then, recopying after I've worked on the
file.

You can also share your file with others without having to attach to
an email.

You get 2GB storage for no charge. Of course, if you want more, they
have monthly subscriptions. I like free!

If anyone is interested in checking it out, just visit:

Yes, that is a referral link, I receive no money, just extra storage
space. Anyone using that link also receives an additional 250m of
space.

For those who do not wish to use the referral link, visit:
