[BlindHandyMan] refrigerator on it's way
Well, they just picked up the unit. I inquired about why it must be running. They want to make sure that the compressor is running so they can easily extract the Freon. The unit will be totally dismantled and everything that can be salvaged will. They even strip the copper winding from the motor so yellow metals are sorted as are Ferris steel and aluminum. --- Please visit my home page, it is motivational, educational, inspirational with a touch of humor. [BlindHandyMan] old refrigerator
Well, the old refrigerator that I am recycling through the ppl program almost totally let me down. They are picking it up tomorrow morning. There was a message on my answering machine that it must be plugged in and running. It was running when it was moved outside so I plugged it in tonight and nothing. Here it tripped the gfci outlet. after resetting it did not work just kept tripping the outlet. Just for kicks I plugged it into an outlet from inside not gfci. This time the light came on but nothing else. After toying for a few minutes my son-in-law said hit it. I picked up one end and dropped on the porch and it started running. Plugged it back into the gfci and it it still works. I suspect that a relay was stuck tripping the gfci but not enough to short out the unprotected line. Anyway it is working so I will get my $35 and free removal tomorrow morning. It reminds me of an old Burroughs field engineer who hit the computer main console and it started working, his comment was that they do not pay me to hit it but for knowing where to hit it. --- Please visit my home page, it is motivational, educational, inspirational with a touch of humor. [BlindHandyMan] new ice box
Well the new refrigerator is installed. It has some nice features but is not at all blind friendly. It has a touch pad display that shows the temp of both the freezer and refrigerator compartments. There are buttons to turn on power cool and the ice maker. I had no choice because it was the only one that I could locate that would fit in the kitchen area. The boss is very happy with it so I am also happy. It is a Samsung and is the only one other than the one at Lowes that would fit. The one at Lowes did not have one good review. I normally do not purchase service agreements but could not pass this one up. With all of the electronics and features I thought it was worth it. For $125 there is a 5 year policy that covers everything even if we break something like a glass shelf. It also covers $250 for food loss. Re: [BlindHandyMan] water filter and advice wanted
To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com mailto:blindhandyman%40yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] water filter and advice wanted We are looking at new refrigerators as well. Hour's is making sounds I don't like and the unit is 24 years old as is. It came with the house so it wasn't the best model in the line to start with. I've gone around and around in my mind over the ice maker question. On one hand it would be nice to always have ice and cold water. On the other hand, a 2 quart bottle of filtered water for coffee making works just as well. I have found out that cold water makes better tasting coffee. I've finally decided to skip the ice maker and have more freezer space for food. We don't use all that much ice and so the occasional 8 pound bag from the corner store works for me. I went the same rounds several years back over a water filter. Although the smell of a swimming pool comes out the city water tap, there is no evidence to suggest it's harmful to drink. That leaves a matter of personal preference. I certainly don't want my coffee smelling like the pool. I don't care if I shower in it but I don't want to drink it. So. I looked at hole house systems. Now your talking money. The filters for such systems cost in the hundred dollar range and upward. As I've said, I don't care if I shower or wash my hair with the stuff, I'm just not going to drink it. We wound up buying a Pure Ultimate water filter which attaches to a kitchen faucet. Flip the lever up for filtered water or down for city water. The filter turns off when it's time to change out the filter cartridge. I buy those at Costco and there are 6 filters in the box for $50. If you buy them 1 at a time, they go for $17 each or about 102 bucks so that's why we do Costco. Just because you have an ice maker doesn't mean you have to use it. That brings me around to another topic I'd like to ask about. I like the new gas stoves with the caste-iron grates and a big center burner. A great place for that huge pot everybody seems to have. The problem is the buttons and controls. The gas knobs are returning to the front of the stove but the oven is a touch plate and appears to be totally useless for the blind. I'd like to hear about your experiences if you've bought a new gas stove in the past year or so. Re: [BlindHandyMan] wow so installing lightswitch question?
Dale, the next time you get one of those switches in your hand examine it carefully. There are small indentations near the hole where the wire is pushed in. With a small screwdriver push on these indentations and the wire should release. I did not get a chance to toy with it myself however, when the electrician relocated the kitchen light switch he popped the switch out in a few seconds. I asked how he got the wires out that fast and he told me about the releases. -- From: Dale Leavens dleav...@puc.net Sent: Wednesday, August 25, 2010 7:38 AM To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] wow so installing lightswitch question? You can use a two way switch in a one way installation. Use the two connections on the one side, not the top two. The wires are hard to pull out, the screws don't make any difference to them, the screws are an alternative connection method only, many people feel more confident screwing the connections down than they do with the press-in wire connections. Just pull hard on the wires, it can help to twist the switch so that the wire rotates slightly in the hole while you pull. Grasp the wire though, don't depend on the wire holding in the box while you are pulling the switch away. These grip very tightly. This is a good thing as it makes the connection by bighting into the copper. Re: [BlindHandyMan] hammering a nail in?
Jewel, It is most likely the reason that you bend the nails is the way in which you described holding the hammer. When I was a kid building something I always bent the nails and held the hammer in the same way that you described. My dad watching for a while came up and moved my hand to the end of the handle. When you hold the hammer close to the head the hammer actually strikes on an an angle causing the nail to bend. When you hold it near the end of the handle the head of the hammer strikes the nail flat. Next week when the new unit is delivered the old one will be relocated to the basement. Since this is a backup and holds cold drinks I thought about using a timer to help cut the electric costs. Re: [BlindHandyMan] refrigerator on timer
I was hoping to save a little wherever I could. Between my power tools ac units etc my electric bill is pretty high. Karen stores a lot of things that would not fit in the main unit. I already have several heavy duty timers. I use them for Christmas lights so sitting in the basement for about 11 months. I think that this thing eats between 8 and 10 dollars a month. I plan to let it sit for a few weeks before firing it up. It is 11 years old and I would assume that the insulation is wet causing it to run an excessive amount of time. When I purchased it the estimated cost was about 40 dollars a year and that was long before the rate increases. -- From: Dan Rossi d...@andrew.cmu.edu Sent: Sunday, August 22, 2010 10:06 PM To: bhm blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] refrigerator on timer Lenny, So, if you are considering just saving some money, how much does a timer cost VS how much will you save in electricity? I mean, a fridge can't cost more than 6 or 8 bucks a month to run, and you would save less than a third of that. OK, so maybe you would save 20 or 30 bucks a year which would probably recover the cost of the timer in a year or so. I assume you aren't doing this to save energy, because having a second refrigerator is not really an energy saver to begin with. Hmm, can you disconnect the frost free system? Don't know if that is possible or not, but might save as well. What about selling it, and purchasing a newer, more efficient, smaller fridge? [BlindHandyMan] new refrigerator
Well after a week of internet searching and a few hours in stores trying to locate a unit that will fit nicely in my kitchen, we stumbled upon one late this afternoon. We stopped into a store H. L. Gray to see how a Frigidaire was constructed. This is one that the customer support woman suggested that we just remove the handles. With the internet searches I located some Samsung models that would work but non anywhere in my area. Here this store had the perfect unit for us. A Samsung that has hidden handles, bottom freezer and is only 30 inches deep, 32.5 inches wide and 68.5 tall. This will fit nicely in our area. I needed less than 31 deep, 33 wide and less than 70 high. What is interesting that this model is not listed on the Samsung web site only at the store site. I discovered that Samsung makes models for each store or a select group of stores. The model numbers that sears and lows sells are not available at any other store nor can these stores get a model not designated for them. Any this unit was also on a nice sail that ended today. Their sales go from Sunday to Saturday. I also do not normally purchase extended warranties but could not pass up this one. For about $125 I have a 5 year complete service contract even covers things that we might do like break a glass shelve. It also has a $250 food loss policy. Our electric company has a program that if upgrade to an energy rated model they will give you $50 and they will pay you $30 to recycle your old unit and they will pick it up. --- Please visit my home page, it is motivational, educational, inspirational with a touch of humor. [BlindHandyMan] refrigerator issue solved
Well we have the refrigerator issue solved. First for the switch I got an electrician in. Looking over the dilemma he is able to use the light switch boxes a junction box and extend the raceway down to the floor then run into the basement and up inside the wall between the dining room and basement stairway. As far as for the actual unit we now have many more possibilities. The unit that we planned to purchase did not have one good review. Thought we saw one that would work but not sure of the size so called the manufacturer. With handle it is over 32 inches eliminating it. The girl said that she would not use the handles. I thought about that but did not want to suggest it to the boss. Here she also considered it but did not want to suggest it to me. After 36 years one would think that we would have better communication skills. Anyway with that in mind we most likely could get something bigger than 18.2 cu ft. --- Please visit my home page, it is motivational, educational, inspirational with a touch of humor. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Easy to Assemble! Takes only 20 minutes
Some great memories of Christmas Eve. Still, there will never be a replacement for the old individual owned hardware/toy stores. When I was old enough to help assemble toys for my younger brothers and sisters there was one hardware store from which my parents purchased everything. There was more than one year where putting something together we discovered that there was a missing part. I remember my dad calling the owner at 1 or 2 in the morning. Fran would say drive out the parts will be in a bag at the side door. He did that for everyone not just my dad. With support like that everyone that we knew only purchased from Saures' hardware. I sure do miss that store. Around 1960 we put two Scat cars together for my brothers. These were peddle cars that now remind you of a go-cart. Sure wish we still had them, last week on the History Channel there was a program about antiques. These cars now sell from $1,200 to $1,500. -- From: Alan Paganelli alanandsuza...@earthlink.net Sent: Saturday, August 07, 2010 2:43 PM To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Easy to Assemble! Takes only 20 minutes LLOL! when I was married to my first wife, we bought a tricycle for her. All I got was a box of metal parts and on the box it said Easy to Assemble! Takes only 20 minutes More like 20 days! There I am on Christmas Eve On the back of the tricycle were 2 steps to get up to the plastic seat. The holes for the second step were missing I mean not even there so here I am with only a power drill and the damn tricycle made of steal. There was some other toy to assemble as well. I don't remember what it was but I finished the job about 5 minutes before my 3 year old daughter woke up and ready for some serious Christmas present opening. I remember she was very happy with her bike and road it all over the house that morning. I think every body who has kids has at least one story like that. I was so torked off that the damn holes weren't even there and the second step was actually a reinforcement peace as well so I couldn't just leave it off. There was a swing set that Suzanne bought for the kids at Toys are us. I couldn't see what it looked like because I didn't go with her so she says I'll read the instructions to you over the phone if you get stuck. You've seen swing sets before. How hard can it be to put a kids swing set together. LOL! It took me 4 days but in the end, there were 3 A-frame supports, 2 regular seats, a trapeze, a sea saw and a 4 kid glider plus a slide attached to one of the A-Frames. I think my oldest was almost 20 when that swing set got pitched. Every kid in 2 miles had played on it at one time or another. There were ruts in the ground from kids shoes and that's some trick in the desert where the ground is as hard as concrete. You can do it also by buying a VCR to DVD burner. This is the easiest way but probably the most expensive. Re: [BlindHandyMan] roof damage
Alan, excellent advice. In my area all contractors require 50% down. -- From: Alan Paganelli alanandsuza...@earthlink.net Sent: Thursday, August 05, 2010 1:10 PM To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] roof damage I would suspect that if the damage is that large that there is more damage you can't see and it's problem that the roof is weak in spots. Crawling around on a roof that has no damage is a risky business to start with and when you toss in possible water damage it could turn deadly and very fast. It's not just about fixing the hole but about inspecting for other damage that possibly could be worse. But, as has already been said, this sort of thing won't go away on it's own. Here's what I recommend. Contact 5 or 6 roofing contractors in your area. Tell them that your taking bids on roof repairs and briefly describe the problem. Don't assume. People invite contractors to stick it to them by describing things they assume to be true. If you tell the contractor you are afraid you might need a new roof, guess what he'll tell you. Yes mam, we examined your roof and your quite correct. Your roof is shot and needs to be replaced. That's at least a 10,000 dollar job. Instead, only describe what you know as fact. Tell them up front that your only taking bids at this time. If they say something like we don't give bids, you can reply, then you don't get the job. If their honest, they'll come out and give you a free bid. If they want to charge you for it, run real fast. I'm the president of our home owners association and am responsible for over 55 homes. It's not a large association as such things go but we get home owners seeking information on what they can do to avoid being taken. Out of 5 or 6 bids, you should wind up with 4. There is always 1 or 2 who offer more excuses why they can't come out when they said they would. Their probably doing you a favor anyway. Out of the 4 or so you get, you'll be amazed at the range of prices. As an example, on a 10 thousand roofing job the prices could be as low as 6 and as high as 20 thousand. Write everything down and never assume you will be able to remember it because you won't. Get the bid in writing or you don't have anything. If it's in writing, you've got the paper to prove the bidder said what ever. Never pay in full up front. You have no bargaining chips left. If you are still holding the money, you've got say-so. It is proper to put some money down up front but only a small amount usually far less then half; like maybe a fourth. /And finally, run like hell when they start promising you the sun and the moon. Unless it's in writing, you don't have it. All the best of luck to you with it. Oh and be sure to inquire about warrantees on their work and how long etc. Alan Please click on: http://www.home.earthlink.net/~alanandsuzanne/ There, you'll find files of my arrangements and performances played on the Yamaha Tyros keyboard. Re: [BlindHandyMan] mower issue
I have several mechanic friends and they all recommend a product called Stay. Here is a short funny story. The one friend a small engine mechanic was on a shopping trip with his wife. He was sitting in the parking lot while his wife did the shopping. From his car he was watching a guy mow his lawn. About every ten minutes the mower would stop, and the guy went on the porch to drink a beer. When he finished the mower started with the first pull. This got Chet's attention so he walked over about two minutes before it stopped. When it stalled out Check took a quick look. Here the guy lost his gas cap and replaced with a Clorox bottle cap. Chet then asked the guy if he had an ice pick or small nail and hammer. Chet punched a small hole into the cap. When the mower did not stop the guy was quite upset with Chet. He no longer had the excuse to drink a six pack while cutting the grass. I can not imagine someone running a mower after several cans of beer. Chet did suggest that he purches a new gas cap. -- From: David Engebretson Jr. d.engebret...@comcast.net Sent: Tuesday, August 03, 2010 9:47 AM To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] mower issue what type of additive do you use? thanks, david David Engebretson Jr., CTO Peace Weaver Hosting Need web hosting? [BlindHandyMan] sensguard hearing protection
A year or ago there was a discussion about the sensguard hearing protection device. I purchased two of them one for me and the other for my wife. We both really like them, she uses hers when running the orik canister vacuum cleaner. Anyway several months ago I was at a Woodcraft store and took mine along to show one of the guys that worked there. He was impressed and took down the company information. The other day there was a flyer from Woodcraft with this item on sale. Their regular price is less than I originally spent for mine. I paid around $25, they sell it for $19.99 and is on sale for $15.99. That thing is amazing, when wearing it I can hear the teeth of the table saw blade cutting. I also can hear Karen walking around upstairs or if she calls me, but all of the loud wine of the motors are canceled out. --- Please visit my home page, it is motivational, educational, inspirational with a touch of humor. The batteries were in mine when I got it. To replace them, there is a Phillips head screw in a small recess on the back. Just a warning, the cover is very happy in place and it doesn't like opening up... But the batteries are under that cover. For orientation, lay the meter on its back with the jacks for the probes at the top. The probe with the button goes on the left side. Probes will fit on both sides but won't work if they get reversed. Below the two jacks for the probes is the selector dial. Turning the dial to the farthest stops in either direction will turn the meter off. To make a choice, turn the dial once and push the button on the probe. Depending on the direction you start from, the female voice will tell you where you are. She will say something like AC .00 volts. Don't go by that as a direct quote, it's an example. Point being, each time you turn the dial and push the button, the voice will tell you the unit of measurement. I don't have mine in front of me so I won't be much help on the buttons below the dial. There is one on each side. One button will give you the reading just like pushing the button on the probe. I seem to remember the other selects different modes but I've been wrong before... Below those two buttons are three larger buttons across the face. Experiment with them and you'll be able to catch on to what they do. As long as you don't touch the probes to anything while you play, you won't hurt the meter. I seem to recall the one in the center is a toggle switch. For example touching the two probe tips together will test for continuity and cause the meter to make a sound while the probes are touching. If you push the center button once, the sound will start. Pushing it again will toggle sound off. The toggle has no effect on the speech, just the sound for continuity testing. This meter will test a ton of different functions some of which I have no use for, or even know what they mean. So maybe some other people can tell you about their uses. If you don't have a scanner, maybe I can scan in the instruction sheet. It isn't very long. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Cement block footings
Al, the ones that I used had 4 screws that you fastened the cleat to the post. There are 4 corners that stick down about an inch with a point at each end. This just sits on the concrete slab, block etc. The fact that it held the 4x4s above theconcrete there is no wicking. Also there is a large cutout that will allow any moisture to dry. I got mine at a lumber yard that recently closed. - Original Message - From: Alan Terrie Robbins arobb...@nycap.rr.com To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, July 20, 2010 4:31 PM Subject: RE: [BlindHandyMan] Cement block footings Lenny, Yes, as they are beginning to get rotten on the bottom. On the one side it is attached to the house via the end joist. The other side or side furthest from the house is supported by two four by fours, one on each corner. These were never sunk into the ground and cemented but rather just set on a cement block even with the surface of the ground. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Radial Arm Saw
Last year Sears discontinued the molding cutter. I have one and only ever used one or two blades. It is a heavy piece of metal with three parts sticking out. You put one blade or cutter in each of the three fingers. When running it sounds like a 1965 muscle car with the air cleaner removed. The cutter that I used a lot was a 3 bead. Thanks, I do have a widgit for removing paint from glass. I thinkI will first try the hot water, then fingernail polish remover, then the oven. I know I can scrape or sand it off but that surely would destroy the paint. - Original Message - From: Dale Leavens dleav...@puc.net To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, July 13, 2010 9:20 PM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] removing cured tightbond 3 glue A razor scraper or I keep a sharpened 2 inch putty knife around for such jobs. An old chisel might do well too. Watch your fingers and if you can, a sheering tap with a mallet on the other end of the scraper will often just crack it right off. Even hot water applied with a compress for a time can loosen the stuff. And I always thought that you were a nonconformist! I would then use the rustoleum brand, probably the most popular. When the roofers used that paint it matched what was up there. The process of dunking steel sheets into molten Zinc was called tinning. Do I actually need to determine if my roof is really tin, or just Zinc coated steel? After 80 years, is there any Zinc left or has it all been consumed by now? Do I just stop over analyzing this and go slap on some paint? I have now read about oil based paints reacting with Zinc, but am still trying to find out what the best solution is. I appreciate many of the suggestions, but one issue is that I need to be able to paint the roof red so that it doesn't stick out like a black eye in the neighborhood. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Painting a tin roof.
my daughter just had her roof painted. The roofers used wire brushes and sand paper. I do not know if they washed it or not. They did use two coats of rustolium roof paint. Their neighbor had a different contractor do similar work but used a paint from Sherwin Williams that is made by rustolium. Some how I do not think that rustolium would make a product for someone else that is better than their name brand product. Years ago when I had some tin roofs my dad and I painted with an aluminum paint that he purchased from Alcoa when he worked there. Again all we did was wire brush and sand. There was one place where there was some pin holes and he soldered a piece of tin over that area. Last year I switched everything to rubber which will most likely outlast me. - Original Message - From: Dan Rossi d...@andrew.cmu.edu To: Blind Handyman List BlindHandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wednesday, July 07, 2010 12:37 PM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Painting a tin roof. [BlindHandyMan] municipal water
I was pleased to learn that our municipal water authority implemented one of my suggestions. There were many times when a water line repair caused dirty and sometimes muddy water. When this happens they make a water boil advisory. Only one time did a neighbor think to call me in the morning to tell me not to drink the water because it is dirty. After the last time I called the manager to talk about a possible fix. I first told him that not only am I blind but an elderly woman across the street and my mother who lives a few blocks away can't see the water. I told him that in today's technology it should be afairly simple fix. How many political robot calls do we receive. If this is simple enough for them to use why can't they use similar software to notify a select group or everyone in the affected area? He thought it was a good idea. Well yesterday not too far away there was a water break. In today's news it was mentioned that everyone in that area was notified by a phone call and they will be notified when they no longer have to boil the water. --- Please visit my home page; it is motivational, inspirational and humorous with many resources for the blind. http://www.lennymchugh.com Lenny Please Copy and Paste into New Message to pass along. At the bottom there are two more 90 degree bends to take it over the wall. Even with a leaf guard the two top bends get really packed. Are you sure these are 90º elbows? That would total to 180º and would have the effect of routing any water exactly back where it came from. I would like to bring the down spout straight down from the gutter then just use two flexi bends to get over the wall. I think if you bring the downspout directly down from the gutter you will be creating another problem in that that will not be a very robust assembly. The downspout was brought to that support post just for that reason -- support. I'm certain the downspout is secured to that post via some strapping because those fasteners holding the downspout to the gutter will really not be sufficient in stormy weather. One thing I did to minimize clogging in these sort of bends was to make sure that I used the shortest screws possible. These screws need to be at least long enough to catch the inside stock (the downspout/elbow joints) securely, but they need not extend into the tunnel where they can impede the passing of debris. Another thought is that, if you have aluminum or steel gutter material, is to use pop rivets. But I wouldn't recommend that technique on plastic or fiberglass material; I did that and it didn't do well. Holland's Person, Bill E-Mail: billgal...@centurytel.net - All men are frauds. [BlindHandyMan] ironing board repair
Yesterday we were out for a while and Karen went to look at a new ironing board. When I inquired about that purchase she told me that she is afraid to use hers because it is so unstable. I just looked at it. It has T-legs and the rivets are loose on both front and back legs. There is a little on the front leg where I could use a pop rivet or self tapping screw. On the back I could use two. Because of the design of the stamped steel I also could drill through and use a bolt. And one more option would be to take it to my neighbor he has a light weight welder. I hate to see something go to the landfill that could be repaired. What do you think is my best option. I am leaning towards the self tapping screws. --- Please visit my home page; it is motivational, inspirational and humorous with many resources for the blind. http://www.lennymchugh.com Lenny Please Copy and Paste into New Message to pass along. [BlindHandyMan] ironing board repaired
Well, it is repaired with 8 #6 sds screws. I had to have Karen help to center punch for me since I can no longer swing a hammer. She then asked if she could try to put the screws in. I showed her how and she had a little fun. To clean up the metal filings I again used my plastic bag and magnet trick. Went over everything to attract the steel filings to the magnet. Then at the trash can dropped the bag. No fuss mess or filings in my fingers. --- Please visit my home page; it is motivational, inspirational and humorous with many resources for the blind. http://www.lennymchugh.com Lenny Please Copy and Paste into New Message to pass along. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Air Purification Systems
After reading this information you may change your mind. A few years ago I called a manufacturer about a cleaner that can produce ozone. I mentioned that I have a guide dog. This cleanses the air and land. This is the good ozone. My ozonator has the same smell as the ozone from a lightening strike. Ozone will kill all bacteria, virus, and dust mites in the air by burning them with oxygen. I have a guide dog and had other dogs in the past, and the ozone gets rid of most odors. Tour house never smelled like dog, except when using the vacuum cleaner. One reason why I like ozone is that it neutralizes chemicals. We had new carpet installed. As you may know new carpet has strong odors from the plastic vapors. We put the ozonator in the room and cranked it up all the way since we were going to be out of the house a few days. We came back and had no odors. I believe that bad ozone is ozone mixed with pollution. I do not know when ozone helps pollution or opposes it. I have never smelled ozone on days with high ozone alerts. Since I am telling you what I believe and am not sure, do not believe it, let's find out what bad ozone is. A few years ago I was at a web site that explained the difference and I will look for it. [BlindHandyMan] 4 foot led lights
Just the other day I was looking at the possibility of replacing the kitchen lights with leds. First they are quite expensive. When my son-in-law was here last evening he was telling me that at one of the nursing homes he was actually converting the lights. He had about 25 done when the director came out. When this guy saw them he went ballistic. The type that was purchased had an orange glow in the center. After the director was on the phone for an hour my son-in-law was told to put the lights back. He has no idea what they are going to do with several thousand dollars worth of lights. The other interesting thing is that they are on a long strip and will probably sag in the middle over time. --- Please visit my home page; it is motivational, inspirational and humorous with many resources for the blind. http://www.lennymchugh.com Lenny Please Copy and Paste into New Message to pass along. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Nail gun options
I would not purchase the staple/nail combo gun. It is ok if you are only going to use staples. I know of one situation where some paneling was put up with one. The driver is 1/4 inch wide. The next day in the bright light my cousin was horrified. There was 1/4 inch indentations all over the paneling. Since it was a rental property he ripped it down and purchased a nail only gun and re paneled the room. - Original Message - From: Alan Terrie Robbins arobb...@nycap.rr.com To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, June 17, 2010 7:32 PM Subject: RE: [BlindHandyMan] Nail gun options Bob, For the little I would use it that would be too much but thanks for sharing. He has two DeWalt electric guns one for 16 gauge and one for 18 gauge. If that doesn't work for you, there are definitely small compressors for you to use. Mine is about the size of an upright vacuum cleaner. Lastly, there are systems where you can use a CO2 cartridge to power a nailer. It's kind of the expensive way to go, but I've considered it because the compressor is damn noisy, and a bit of a pain in the ass to drag out if you just need to shoot a couple of nails. I'll also say that if I have the compressor out, I enjoy using the nail gun for a lot of stuff. I will often tack pieces together rather than clamping them, or tack a straight edge down as a guide. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Carnegie Mellon University. [BlindHandyMan] Holmes HAWF2043 window fan
We just purchased this dual window fan. Although it is electronic thermostatically controlled, it is extremely blind friendly. First the two motors are rain safe. There are three buttons one at the top and two at the bottom. The bottom two are slide switches that change each fan for exhaust or intake. The top button is as follows: first touch turns it on constant high then the next turns it on constant low next turns it on high for 60 degrees and each subsequent touch cycles to 65,70, 75 amd 80 degrees The next cycle goes through the low settings and the last turns it off. Also just by holding in the button it will quickly cycle and turn the unit off. It would be nice if it had a built in timer. I will put one of the timers that you slide out the pins. I will supply power from 6 PM to 6 AM. The only problem is when power is cut it does not maintain a memory. I like to run it at night to pull cool mountain air thought the house. --- Please visit my home page; it is motivational, inspirational and humorous with many resources for the blind. http://www.lennymchugh.com Lenny Please Copy and Paste into New Message to pass along. Re: [BlindHandyMan] calibrating oven
Thanks, I did order it not sure how/if it will work. My problem was that I could not find one talking or not that would go up to 550 degrees. There are a few for about $100, it would be cheaper to get the service guy to do it for about $50. Even if I can get it closer it would be much better. To bake a cake she has to have it in for almost an hour to get it done and the cook time is suppose to be 35 minutes. With the old spring unit it registers over 25 degrees low. I was thinking that if I left the oven on for about 45 minutes I could touch the probe to the metal rack. The rack should be the same temp and not be affected by the air escaping. - Original Message - From: Alan Paganelli alanandsuza...@earthlink.net To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, June 11, 2010 11:23 AM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] calibrating oven This probe unit is mostly made of plastic and the metal probe part doesn't look like it's the strongest thing you've ever seen. It's only 30 to 35 bucks and is intended to be stuck in a hunk of meat to measure it's temperature which sounds easier in theory then in practice. The object of the game is to get the probe in the center of the meat. That's fine if it's an I-round which has no bone. If it's a 7 or 9 bone roast, it can be a challenge even getting close to the center which skews the reading. The thermometer is useful for many things but calibrating an oven probably won't be one of them. You can stick the thing in a peace of meat 5 times and get 5 different answers which means you have to average the temperature readings. It's not that the thing is worthless, it's because you cannot get the probe in the exact same place every time. The probe is 10 inches long with the plastic thermometer sitting on the top. It reminds me of having a talking watch sitting on top of a cheap metal peace. It doesn't mean that it isn't useful or that it's not worth 30 bucks, it just means it probably won't be very useful in this case. It's kind of like trying to use it to take your kid's temperature with a meat thermometer. In this case however, it would read body temperature if used under the arm. It can read air temperature but I don't believe it's that stable. I have one of these things and to tell the truth, don't use it all that much and when when I do use it for roasts and such, you spend more time fooling around with it trying to get an average then it's probably worth. If you need to calibrate an oven, I wouldn't depend on this thing. No need to open the oven to check. As for accuracy, we did a test with the talking unit that we bought from Maxi Aids some time ago and the little round one that we hang on the rack. I suppose that is the spring type that you mention, but don't know for sure, but I know it's not digital. They both registered the same temp after about 11 minutes. Karen knows that our oven is off by at least 25 degrees. In order to calibrate the oven, I need an accurate digital thermometer that will go up to 550 degrees. The instructions are to set the temp to 550 and when that temp is reached hold the bake button in. To set it I need a way to check the actual temp. we have a spring thermometer but have no faith in that. I just read that the blind mice have a cooking thermometer that will go up that high. Since it is a probe type I wonder if we would just touch the rack for the actual temperature? Any suggestions? I hate to call someone in to do that job since all we need is a way to record the actual temp when the pre heat light goes out. --- Please visit my home page; it is motivational, inspirational and humorous with many resources for the blind. http://www.lennymchugh.com Lenny Please Copy and Paste into New Message to pass along. [BlindHandyMan] Maytag dishwasher
Well, I did make the wrong decision. It was repaired today. While the guy was here he pointed out that something was wrong with the handle. He took the door apart and as he thought the top panel mounting pins were broke, Not all but two of the four. If we do not get it fixed a few more parts will need to be replaced. This part installed will be about $175. If I had any idea of that I would have taken the $150 offer towards a new machine. The guy got beat up today on the Maytag jokes. I reminded him about the old commercials where the Maytag repairman was bored. He is repairing ten dishwashers today. He did give Karen one tip that is probably true for all dishwashers. When you open the door first push in before unlatching. This takes pressure off of the plastic parts inside. Also do not close it when you empty, just push the door up and do not latch. Again this takes wear off of the parts and also does not put any creases into the gasket. --- Please visit my home page; it is motivational, inspirational and humorous with many resources for the blind. http://www.lennymchugh.com Lenny Please Copy and Paste into New Message to pass along. [BlindHandyMan] How to Remove Water Ring Stains on Fine Wood Furniture eHow.com.htm
How to Remove Water Ring Stains on Fine Wood Furniture | eHow.comHas anyone used this procedure? The other night I had a stemmed glass with ice and some white wine. The glass was sweating and left a ring on one of the tables. Karen was going to purchase a guardsman water ring removal system and I found this information. From ehow.com water rings on fine wood furniture How to Remove Water Ring Stains on Fine Wood Furniture Who knew - the wonder's of mayonnaise - full flavor and all the fat please - easily removes water rings on your good furniture - we have used this trick for years - and it really works fantastically...no need to re-stain your grandmother's antiques... Difficulty: Easy Instructions Things You'll Need: a.. full fat mayonnaise - 2 tablespoons b.. couple of paper towels c.. 6-12 hours wait time 1.. Step 1 Locate ring from leaving your favorite ice tea or other cold drink that has now left a water mark on your Grandmother's passed down antique table top. Grab full fat mayonnaise (miracle whip OK too here folks) and spread 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise covering water ring like you would a BLT sandwich. 2.. Step 2 Gently place paper towel over water ring and slabbed on mayo - it's more to remind you that the mayonnaise is there than anything else while keeping the area moist. 3.. Step 3 We normally leave the mayonnaise on overnight, but by 6 hours, wipe clean and voila, water ring is removed. 4.. Step 4 Why does this work, you ask? The fat in the mayonnaise gently gets reabsorbed into the wax in the wood thereby removing water ring mark and leaving you and your favorite antique table top looking fantastic... This is great in the summer when people forget to use coasters under their iced drinks... __ Information from ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version of virus signature database 5175 (20100605) __ The message was checked by ESET NOD32 Antivirus. http://www.eset.com __ Information from ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version of virus signature database 5175 (20100605) __ The message was checked by ESET NOD32 Antivirus. http://www.eset.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Re: [BlindHandyMan] New Treadmill!
Depend on the store from which you are purchasing, they may have a setup option in delivery. With the setup option they will put it where you like and do any assembly. When I had mine delivered many years ago it was put in the room, unpacked and set up. They even took the packing material away. - Original Message - From: Claudia cdelreal1...@sbcglobal.net To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, May 29, 2010 11:01 PM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] New Treadmill! [BlindHandyMan] cleaning grill
Tomorrow, I will have the pleasure of cleaning up the gas grill. Oh, how I hate that. I just came up with an idea that I will do tomorrow. Whenever I try to vacuum the junk out of the bottom the shop vac hose really gets a mess. Then if you touch it you get black that is easily transferred. My idea is to take a white trash can liner and cut the bottom open. then tuck a few inches inside the hose and put the rest around the hose with some rubber bands. When finished just remove the bag and the outside of the hose will be clean. I think that will be much easier than trying to clean the hose when finished. --- Please visit my home page; it is motivational, inspirational and humorous with many resources for the blind. http://www.lennymchugh.com Lenny Please Copy and Paste into New Message to pass along. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Putting in a basement floor
For the next wishing well planter that I make I plan to use baked lumber. Baked lumber is heated to I think about 400 degrees. This destroys all of the sugar in the wood making it insect proof and rot resistant Here is some more information from Baley wood products the saw mill from which I purchase all of my wood. http://www.baileywp.com/html/thermo.html What is Thermo-Treated Wood? Thermo-Treatment is the process of gradually heating any species of lumber to temperatures of 410 - 450º F in a special chamber that has had the oxygen completely removed from the system. These conditions are needed to prevent the wood from combusting, which takes place at temperatures over 300º F. Why Use Thermo-Treated Wood? a.. Durability: 25 year life span can be expected for exterior applications b.. Moisture Repulsion: The process seals the cellular structure of the wood making it impervious to water and moisture c.. Stabilizaton: Swelling and shrinkage is reduced as well as cracking and checking d.. Color: Consistent brown color all the way through to the very center of the board e.. Chemical Free: Chemicals are not used in the Thermo-Treatment process which makes this product an environmentally friendly alternative. Milling: Sawing: Sawing does not differ much from sawing untreated wood. Because of the stabilization from the heat treatment, distortion of the wood is greatly reduced after sawing. Since the Thermo-Treatment eliminates the resins in the wood, machines require little cleaning after milling. Planing: Machines well using all normal methods. Sharp Cutters provide the best results, as with all woods. Milling: Blades must be sharp, otherwise tearout may occur. Milling across the grain may increase tear out. Tearout is most likely to take place at the end of a board where there is a thick piece of wood behind the blade. Careful planning should be taken into consideration. Sanding: Material sands generally the same as untreated wood. Due to the absence of resins in the wood that has been crystalized in the process, the sand paper does not load up like it does with untreated woods. Surface treatment: Use surface treatment that will protect against Ultra Violet radiation in order to prevent color changes and surface shakes. Take into account that Thermo-Treated wood has lower water absorption than normal wood and needs a longer time to penetrate the wood. Oil-based substances work just as well as they would with normal wood. Gluing: Longer Processing time is needed for the glue to be absorbed by the Thermo-treated wood, especially when using water based glues. Because the Thermo-Treated wood has a low moisture absorption, penetration and drying time of the glue is increased. Screwing: Heat treatment reduces the splitting strength of the wood. The use of self-tapping or predrilling hardware is recommended. Also, the use of stainless steel screws with less threads and countersunk heads is recommended for external use and in humid environments. We recommend not using galvanized fasteners as they tend to leave bleed marks on the woods surface over time. Nailing: It is recommended to use a compressed air gun with depth control since hammer contact with the wood promotes splitting. To reduce the risk of discoloration from metal nails, the use of stainless steel nails is recommended. Small oval head nails help to reduce the risk of splitting as well. For more information on thermo-treated woods, please visit this website. A message warning that windows did not previously start because of a hardware problem. It wanted me to select a previous state that worked. While my wife was reading the choices it did start. Is this my hard drive going south or the mother board. I have been putting off purchasing a new machine. This is a 2000 1.3 mhz machine with 512 memory, it does everything that I need it to do.If I can locate another 40 gb hard drive I could easily replace. I do have full image backups. --- Please visit my home page; it is motivational, inspirational and humorous with many resources for the blind. http://www.lennymchugh.com Lenny Please Copy and Paste into New Message to pass along. Re: [BlindHandyMan] using an air nailer and an air compressor
A friend at a local garage brazed a special fitting for me. It is a 1/4 inch mail npt quick disconnect with a brass truck tire valve stem. By inserting this into my compressor I can set the air pressure with a talking tire gauge. - Original Message - From: Blaine Deutscher b.m.deutsc...@sasktel.net To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, May 07, 2010 6:17 PM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] using an air nailer and an air compressor Hello there. When I took construction in high school we used air nailers. I was just wondering if anyone who was totaly blind has used one with out sighted assistance? If you have how do you know how much pressure the compressor is at? I'd like to get one but am not sure how to tell what the pressure gage is at. If anyone can help that would be great. Just as a point of interest, I don't think that you can cut cast iron with an acetylene torch. I remember a long time ago needing to get some final drive gears out of a heavy casting and having to use a DC welder to cut open the cast iron. I could be wrong but that's my story and I'm sticken to it. Dan: I thought it would be really cool to use a cutting torch too, until I actualy did it. I cut a gear shift handle out of an old deralict truck, and it's the only time I can recall actually being scared of a tool. It's loud, and obviously you're going to need gloves a hood and a mask, and it's really hard to tell where you're actually cutting. I had a sighted flunky er employee standing by to give directions, and I still managed to set the floor mats on fire. And, that much cast iron would take a mighty long time to cut anyway. I vote for shattering the thing. Not only willl you accomplish your aim, but it could be a great stress reliever. Maybe it could be a neighborhood thing, a case of beer or so, and invite the neighbors to come and show off how much arm strength and how well they can use a sledge. I'd say a sixteen pound sledge would be about right for this, and then too, one of them is bound to have some kind of vehicle to use for disposing of the debris when you're done. Currently I have about 3 Macs that belong to me and my family, my employer's PC and their Mac as well that connect to the Apple router. I don't know what security settings you are using, but for wireless connections I strongly encourage you use WPA2 Personal, which will work beautifully with the Mac. If you are using WEP, it is possible there is a problem with the key. If you want to explain your issue off list, send me a note at scottn3...@gmail.com or reply to this e-mail address and I'll see what I can do to help you. I would however say if your within a few feet of the router normally, you might want to use the wired connection unless it is a laptop. I do this mainly to get better throughput with other wired machines on the network, but that may not be a concern for you.
