Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] CCIE lab DOC-CD (univercd replacement)

2009-01-06 Thread Jacob Owen
Greg,
Having taken 10 CCIE labs in my day I can tell you that you CAN NOT go in
remembering everything that you may see when it comes to a CCIE Lab. Many
times I would have to trade off between remembering only 1 of 2 things and
just remembering where to find the item I chose not to remember was in the
documentation. It's also a matter of speed, if you can copy and paste QoS
configs from the SRND to a notepad, make your changes and then copy and
paste into your device that can save you far more time than trying to
remember the syntax of every command. I don't say go into the Lab expecting
to use the documentation for the majority of it, just get a good sense of
where the commonly hit items are in case you need to look something up.

How can someone expect to go into the lab thinking they may need to use

I believe if a person feels they may need the documentation available in
the lab, then they're not ready for the lab.

journey over the last 5 years or so. First off, I wanted to thank Mark
and Vik from IPExpert on their absolutely phenomonal product in the Blended
Learning Solution, especially the video walkthroughs. Their were many
topics that I just didn't understand before watching them being performed my
Mark/Vik on the walkthrough and a light bulb went off in my head and it made
complete sense. This was a crucial piece of material that I know I could
not have passed without. I also attended a bootcamp from IPExpert that got
me well prepared as well.

Good luck to everyone, I will try and help out with questions if I can. As
for now I think I am going to get to know my family again as I have been

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Block International calls inbound H.323 / SRST

2008-10-21 Thread Jacob Owen
I believe to limit from the PSTN into your SRST devices/ephones you would
need an incoming corlist on the incoming H.323 dial-peer and an outgoing
corlist to the Ephone-DN numbers under call-manager-fallback. You think of
the calls coming into the SRST router from the PSTN (incoming) and then out
to the ephone (outgoing). It would be the opposite to limit calls from
ephones to the PSTN.

To solve just make an outbound dial-peer that matches the international
prefix without port or session target in it? Since there's no way of
putting COR on ephone-dn in SRST. Is there?

Isn't the trick to this one blocking the international calls ONLY when
in SRST/H323 and not when using MGCP? If you use dial-peers to do the
block won't that affect MGCP operation as well? So won't COR lists have
to be used within callmanger fallback?

Goal is to block calls from international type numbers when in
  SRST / H.323.

I have a method of doing this but it is a little long winded and
  requires visibility of the ANI.

Wondering if any one else has worked out a quick way, based on
voice translation profile / COR / ANO.

The approach where one blocks it on the inbound Dial Peer with a
VTP does not work for H.323.

The call must be allowed into the router so the normal H.323 dial
  peers to CCM function.

  Happy thinking.

Router (or Phones if possible). I checked through perfomance monitor on CCM
and could see one MOH Multicast resource active when call was put on hold
but there was no MOH on phone.

I checked show ip pim interface count and could see counters increasing
on HQ router interfaces but not on BR1.

Below is the summary how I configured multicast MOH:
Enabled MOH Audio resource for multicast and MOH server for multicast with
Hop count of 6. Codec G.711ulaw an d G.729 selected. Put MOH server in two
different MRGs, one for BR1 and anther for HQ. BR1 MRG has MOH enabled. Put
the MRGs in respective MRGLs and applied to correct device pools.
Enabled IGMP snooping on Cat 6k, enabled multicast-routing on HQ and BR1
routers. Configured IP pim-dense mode on HQ - to BR1 Sub-interface, HQ
 Fast-ethernet sub-interface, BR1 Voice vlan interface.

 Thanks for your time..

[OSL | CCIE_Voice] Volume 3 Lab 9 Question 8

2008-10-06 Thread Jacob Owen
All,
In this question it says to define the calling restrictions (911, Local,
Internal for Phone 1 at each site, all numbers for phone 2). That part's a
cinch, what confused me was the directions on the video on how to set the
Time of Day routing to limit calls between midnight and 0600 to
*any*number. In the video, a Time period is defined and attached to a
Time
Schedule, then this Time Schedule is applied to the Internal Partition.
Wouldn't this need to be attached to every partition in use for HQ and BR1?
I guess the question may be too vague, if it were talking about dialing
internal numbers I believe the walkthrough would be correct.

Also, would it also be possible to create a new partition that was site
independent, attach the Time Schedule to it, add it to the top of every CSS
and then create a new Route-Pattern that would match all dialed numbers
(9.XXX) and Block Pattern? Or would I need to make duplicate
Route-Patterns so the more specific routeable patterns wouldn't be used?
Just trying to think outside the box.

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] H323 COR ?

2008-10-05 Thread Jacob Owen
Mike,
I was under the impression since the call came into the H323 gateway from
UCM (GW isn't in SRST) it wasn't tagged with an incoming corlist and
therefore could reach all remote PSTN numbers. When the router drops back
to SRST the phones would register with a corlist incoming and therefore be
limited to where they could call. Hopefully someone will let me know if I
am incorrect. You could also test this by adding a corlist incoming to the
inbound voip dial-peer and see if you can call.

On Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 12:35 PM, Mike Brooks [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

If COR is configured on H323 dial-peers on an H323 gateway, is the
dial-peer COR only in affect when in SRST mode ? If not, wouldn't you
be performing COR twice once on the CallManager and also on the
 H323-GW ?

 for example:
 phones/CSS h323-gw inbound voip dial-peer (KEY) --- h323gw
 outbound pots dial-peer (LOCK)
 or
 h323-gw inbound pots dial-peer (KEY) -- h323-gw outbound voip
 dial-peer (LOCK) -- h323-gw/CSS (on CM)

If COR is in affect regardless of if it the site is in SRST mode
(which I assume it would be) should you just not configure COR
 (keys/locks) on the inbound/outbound VOIP dial-peer to/from CM ?

Chris,
What I think they are implying is the announcement of
changes won't come for 6 months, and they would take
effect 6 months from the announcement date.

So for example, a January 1, 2009 announcement = July
1, 2009 take effect and so on.

After talking with some of the Cisco folks in the
 know here at
Networkers, it seems that the Voice lab will
 remain the same for at
minimum 6 but probably up to as much ad 12 months.
 Look for a
announcement to come sometime around Jan to June '09
 for a June to Dec
 '09 rollout.

Most likely will be to go to 6.1 since it is in fact
 the lowest bug
count ok any UCM release to date - but of course all
 specific details
such as version number are all being worked out.

So good news for those of you who are in the middle
 of your studies -
keep plugging away and watch for future updates!

  Well,

I will always check and verify the calling search
 space and
  the partition.
Also, I will make sure that I have the AAR Group,
 AAR CSS
  and the External
Phone Mask configured on my ip phones. Lets not
 forget AAR

Hi,

Not sure if it is typo error. You have AAR
 prefix
  9 with
BR1 while your
route pattern to BR1 is 916175222XXX

IF it is not a typo, then with your AAR Prefix
 +
  BR1
External Phone Mask =
96175222002 which didn't match your BR1 Route
  Pattern.

Br1-AAR . prefix:91 with HQ-AAR
HQ-AAR . *prefix: 9* with BR1-AAR

HQ phone dn [1001, 211001]
BR1 phone dn [2002, 6175222002]

Route patterns configured:
9.1211xxx

 HQ-AAR . prefix: 9 with BR1-AAR

 HQ phone dn [1001, 211001]
 BR1 phone dn [2002, 6175222002]

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] H323 with SRST

2008-06-06 Thread Jacob Owen
Onur,
I believe your dial-peer 1 would catch any PSTN calls
destined for BR1 phones, but unless you are using the
dialplan-pattern command under call-manager-fallback I
think you'll need to drop 10 digit calls to 4 with a
voice translation rule/profile (you can use others, I
just like that).

I think a 3rd dial-peer for destination-pattern 1...
would be necessary most likely with a preference of 2
(main ccm dial-peer pref 0, 2nd ccm dial-peer pref 1).
The other solution would be to set up a Num-exp
that turned 1... into say 9121222x1... which would
then match your long distance dial-peer. 6 of one,
1/2 dozen of another. I like the seperate dial-peer
since I can fine tune cor since some users needing to
reach HQ are not allowed to call Long Distance but
we'd want them to be able to reach the HQ Long
Distance Numbers. Hope this helps.

times. When we go to SRST
dial-peers that are pointing to CallManagers
 are
   not
 functional anymore so
for users at BR1 site should we set up
 another
dial-peer and give it a lower
(i mean higher number) preference? When SRST
 is
   not
 functional will this
 break the requirement?

 Cheers,

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] PSTN softphone

2008-05-03 Thread Jacob Owen
Sara,
One thing I noticed about IP Blue that got me alot in
the beginning was even after you change the loopback
MAC Address prior to starting IP Blue it seems to
still use whatever the previous MAC was the last
session. The proctorlabs setup allows you to register
as any POD's PSTN phone not just the one you are
working on, so be sure the numbers follow the correct
pattern (21222X where X is the last number of the
pod).

Go into Setting's and make sure it's using the right
MAC Address as well. It's weird issues like this that
makes me use IP Blue only for the PSTN phone and IP
Communicator for the BR2 CME phones!

the number of the sub-interface is irrelevant, what is
important is the vlan # listed in the encapsulation

2008-04-10 Thread Jacob Owen
All I ever do when I start is the following config on
the HQ Router and 6500:

HQ
int f0/0.2X0
 encapsulation dot1q 2x0
 ip address 10.x.200.3 255.255.255.0
!
int f0/0
 no shut

6500
set trunk x/y on dot1q

That's it, never had an issue with native vlans as 1
is normally chosen. If the lab requires the data vlan
I just add the sub-interface on the HQ router, no
changes needed on the 6500 as I allow all trunks. May
not be ideal in real world applications but it's
fast and easy to setup.

You can try, but you are probably wasting time.
I`ve asked the same question (because i`ve had the
same issues) at networkers in Barcelona, but no
results. The statement is, we don`t care how you do
it, as long as it works, so for instance , if you
have 4 questions that can only be tested if you have
an E1 up, however you failed to set it up
correctly. And you are sure you have the 4
remaining questions correct, you will fail all 5
questions (basterds !!!) It`s not fair i know,
however at the moment we are stuck with this kind
of grading. sorry. erik On Mon, Apr 7, 2008

[OSL | CCIE_Voice] AAR with TEHO Question

2008-04-05 Thread Jacob Owen
Last night I was labbing on the IPExpert Workbook
Section 22 where one of the tasks was to setup TEHO
for HQ to user BR1 and vice versa. I got this working
pretty easily and was all happy and moved on to the
later sections. One of the later sections was to
setup AAR, I setup the AAR groups with the 91 prefix
addition and once I changed the location bandwidth to
23Kbps to simulate network congestion my phone would
read Network Congestion, Rerouting but I would get
the fast busy.

If I would increase the location bandwidth and dial
the same number AAR should have been using (617521
- Ext. Number Mask for BR1 Phn 1) it would route to
BR1 and the call would work fine. Should I have used
a more specific dial-pattern (for instance 617521200X)
and route it out the HQ gateway?

Also, shouldn't a lack of bandwidth disqualify BR1
as an available gateway in the Route List and
therefore use HQ? Thanks.

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Lab restrictions

2008-04-01 Thread Jacob Owen
Jonathan,
That is one of the big challenges of any CCIE lab, you
will need to know how to do 1 thing 2-3 different ways
as you won't know what you'll be allowed to do and not
in the real thing. Remember, it isn't the hardest
test around because it's easy, and when you pass
you'll feel so much better knowing it was hard. Wish
I had a better answer, but I think Jason was right on
with his response.

[OSL | CCIE_Voice] Strange Acting 7960

2008-03-31 Thread Jacob Owen
I was wondering if any of you had seen something
similar. I have a 7960 connected to a switch that has
a Voice vlan configured and dhcp on a router servicing
that voice vlan. All other phones on that vlan get
IP's fine and register but this 1 phone sits on
Obtaining IP and just sits there. I have moved the
port on the switch, verified the switchport settings
to match working phones as well as plugged a PC into
that wall jack and it works fine so the wiring isn't
the issue.

I was wondering if a firmware upload was interrupted
or something, anyone know how to COMPLETELY reset a ip
phone or is the Settings,3,33,**#,YES the only way to
clear everything?

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Lab questions about RTP

2008-03-30 Thread Jacob Owen
Edward,
I probably know more about RTP than most people on
this mailing list, my next voice attempt on 4/21 will
be #9 for me in RTP (this is for all IE's not just
Voice :) ).

I believe you get 2 blank pieces of paper which you
will have to return at the end of the day, i am sure
you can request more if you need more.

PC's seem to be plenty fast all the times I have been
there, I think for voice the server response is more
of an issue than PC would be. I believe the screen
resolution is at least 1280X1024 and if not that
pretty close. Only 1 monitor is provided.

Their are 2-3 very, very large coolers in the break
room about 150 feet from the lab that is stocked with
just about every kind of soda (diet and regular) you
could imagine, the bathrooms are about 1/2 to the
break room on the right. To leave the lab you need to
grab a visitor badge hanging on the door and if
someone else is already out you can still leave and
just ring the doorbell to get back into the lab.

The lunch is provided to you and you have to take it
in a small conference room off of the main lab room.
As for your low carb diet I am not sure, they really
only offer 1 choice and it often contains meat and
cheese (actually always I think) which I know some
people won't eat for personal or religous reasons. I
am sure they will have something, and if you would
like you could write [EMAIL PROTECTED] with ?'s and see
if you can get a response. I did see something once
about if you had special requests you could ask, but I
am not sure where that is at. LIke I said, I could
walk that room blindfolded so let me know if you or
anyone else on this forum has any other questions.

Okay, enough of the background. When I go to any of

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Whats Missing

2008-03-20 Thread Jacob Owen
I think Matt's words are extremely true, I have 2
CCIE's under my belt with FAR more than 1 attempt to
get them and plan on the same for the CCIE Voice lab.
Nearly all the funds came out of my own pocket as well
so don't think I am taking attempt after attempt on
someone else's dime.

I often hear those without IE's ask How many times
did it take you to pass and to be honest, it doesn't
matter as long as you have the PASS under the CCIE
Certification Status page. I am not saying I wouldn't
like to pass an IE on the first attempt (which would
have to be Security since I have already failed the
voice lab once) but I have yet to be asked by a
prospective employer how many attempts it took, in the
end all that matters is you have it.

Take a shot, I personally love the lab experience. I
don't get any hands on work in my day to day job so
the lab is the only place where I can get 8 hours of
un-interrupted lab time. Some call me insane which
might be true. :) Good luck!!

--- Matthew Cody [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

This may come across as negative, but my advice is
 simple: don't be afraid
to fail the lab. I have a few friends who are in
 the program right now, and
some of them seem obsessed about being completely
 prepared before their
first attempt. It is completely understandable, and
 while I'm sure there
are plenty of folks out there that can pass the lab
 on the first attempt,
well. let's just say that I'm not one of them!

I wound up taking the lab 5 times, with the last 2
 attempts coming out of my
own pocket. (That means testing fees, travel,
 hotels. hell, I even took
vacation to do it!). IP Expert was my primary
 source of preparation and
information; the workbooks were VERY relevent, the
 bootcamps were extremely
helpful, and I spent a lot of time on Proctorlabs.

I don't believe one single preparation resource can
 prepare you fully for
the lab; you have to get in there and see it for
 yourself. Understand the
environment, experience the stress and the pressure,
 see exactly how the
questions are phrased. as someone else said
recently, go on in there and
 take the lab!

I have seen several comments about people who have
 attempted the test in the
past couple of weeks. How well did the Proctor labs
 ultimate lab guide
prepare you for the test? What areas did you find
 the most difficult? I can
quickly and without reference perform all tasks in
 the books with the
exception of: IPMA, Fast/Quick Dial, EM, Fax, BACD,
 QOS on 6500, QOS on
FR,and sometimes Gatekeeper gets me. I can quickly
 find the IPMA, Fast/Quick
Dial, EM, Fax and BACD on the univercd or other
 available source. and I can
usually complete the full lab scenarios in th 7:45
 proctor lab session.
Based on your experience with the lab and my above
 statements do you think I
am ready to take the lab? Additionally I have been
 working in voice for 21
years, I have been a CCNA for I think 10 years and I
 have been Microsoft
 certified since NT.

[OSL | CCIE_Voice] Transcoding vs. MTP Question

2008-03-19 Thread Jacob Owen
In 2 different sections of the Solution Guide I see 2
seperate ways to configure dspfarm profiles but
something confused me.

One section associates the transcoding profile by
using the associate profile 1 register
mtp and that is called out again in the
sdspfarm config.

In another section it simply registers XCODER and
then calls that name out in the sdspfarm config.

Is the name used in this command simply used to
identify the profile later in the config? Also, would
this name need to match (Mac address version or just a
name) when registering HW based resources on the call
manager? Thanks.

[OSL | CCIE_Voice] NTP Sync after reboot timing??

I have tested the NTP Service method as well as the

after a reboot with the NTP.conf file set and the NTP

update with it's NTP server? I have set the date like
2 years in advance rebooted (on both VMWare and base

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Proctorlabs ATA not obtaining IP

2008-03-02 Thread Jacob Owen
Jonathan,
I have covered just about every possible DHCP issue
and I am 100% it can't be that. I just configured the
2 IP Phones connected to the 6500 as dot1q trunks and
setup their auxillary vlan's and BAM they got their
IP's in like 15 seconds. I also have the 6608 T1
Module setup for DHCP and it too, has an IP.

Everything is on the same subnet, it's all configured
correctly. I hate these ATA's, I have one at Home I
have NEVER been able get working running an SCCP
image. It sucks since this lab is using the ATA quite
extensively. Well, no point wasting more time on this
if their is other things to get to. Thanks again.

OK, let's go back to DHCP troubleshooting then...

CCM is in the same subnet (and same vlan) as the ATA
 and the IP phone,
right? So, a helper-address shouldn't be an issue...

You could try moving the DHCP pool to the switch,
 just to see if the
 problem is there...

 Have you tried kicking it?

 I am

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] voice rack ip blue phone

2008-03-01 Thread Jacob Owen
Sara,
Did you register the IP Blue phone as an internal
phone or as the PSTN phone?

If you had it setup as the PSTN phone did you have all
your inbound call routing setup prior to making a
call? Did you strip the required numbers of digits if
that was required? Was the partitions/CSS on the
gateway set to allow it to reach the HQ phone?

If you were registering the IP Blue phone as another
phone within your call manager environment did you
verify the partition/CSS settings?

If you can provide some more info maybe we can
identify the issue. Thanks.

[OSL | CCIE_Voice] IP Phone port settings

2008-01-22 Thread Jacob Owen
Does anyone know of a way using Call Manager 4.2 to
push a change to the switch and pc ports on 7940/7960
phones. We seem to be running into the issue that if
we hard code the switch ports the phone switch port
goes to 100/half and the PC port goes 100/full. If we
go auto/auto on the switch the switch ports goes
100/half and the PC port goes 100/Full. We have about
800 phones in this deployment so touching each one
really isn't an option. Thanks.

That should have come with the workbook when you
purchased it, I know mine did. It is a large, spiral
bound book containing about 800 pages.

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Ipexpert Audio/DVD

2007-11-21 Thread Jacob Owen
I have both the CD and DVD self study from IPExpert.
I am very pleased with them but to be honest I think
those that would benefit the most from these are
individuals that are very close to being prepared for
the lab. I myself am maybe 30-40% and parts of the CD
and DVD's were helpful but far from what I need to be
100% prepared. I realized this when I bought them but
some people are under the impression of them being
enough to prepare completely without any lab time or
other studying.

The DVD's and CD's are also a bit dated. The version
I have talks about them going to Call Manager 4.1 in
a few months and I think they have been at 4.1 for
quite some time now. I think if you were going to get
one go with one or the other but not both, they seem
to identical except the DVD has video material as well
as the audio overlay.

I did listen to the CD's on the 12 hour drive to and
from my first CCIE lab exam and I will say I was able
to retain information on the lab from what I heard on
the CD's so it could be a good way to cram for the
lab during a flight or drive to the lab.

I guess in the end you can't go wrong getting more
study material, so the DVD or CD's are a good
investment in my opinion.

[OSL | CCIE_Voice] Proctorlabs Complete Equipment lIst

2007-11-13 Thread Jacob Owen
Does anyone happen to have a complete list of the
proctorlabs lab layout? I am attempting to recreate
it in my basement and want to get as close as possible
to be more in line with the solutions guide. Their
website says the lab each consist of x,y, and z but
don't go into the detals on the modules and other
details.

Thanks for any help you can offer.
