I know it happens all the time the other way round, but haven't really
encountered it in IE - post a link so we can look at the code, that way
you can get many heads trying to find the problem

YES! Go! Well worth the time. Went last year, thought we we're going
this year, but deadlines are getting in the way ... Quality subject
matter, quality speakers, and Michael Smith and his crew do a super job
organizing it all.

So please go, and tell everyone I said hi!

That's correct. I "downgraded" back to the first version of WS Pro 3
and everything works fine. Strange problem. No page would could be
found when doing a "POST". Gets worked fine. This was on my Win 98
development box so I didn't need really need the security patches or
anything. WS Pro runs great with CF 4.51 under NT.

The price is down to 300 bucks for a single server (compared to about
900 when I originally purchased WS Pro 2). It's even more affordable
if you're running 3 or more servers. Anything's better than the IIS
security patch circus IMHO.

Have you thought of a site license? Very cheap for a hosting house or
similar with a reasonable number of machines.

We hated moving away from Website to do clustering since it was the way we
got into CF in the first place and its a much better server that IIS. To
lose it again because of MX would be a second disaster. I'm glad it looks
like we won't have to.

Not CFMX. It's 4.51.

"/" was mapped to C:\inetpub\wwwroot\

CFIDE was in WWWRoot.

Every page could be found through links or forms using method="GET".
If I changed GET to POST, Page Not Found. This was any page on the
development box. Not just the CF Admin login. That just happened to
be the first Form button I hit after upgrading. It took me a couple
hours to relate the problem to a POST.

Once again, no problems on my NT production box.

CFMX, UDF and CF Functions

2002-06-06 Thread Christopher P. Maher

I have found that if you try to call a user defined function inside a CF
function, that it works in CF5 but in CFMX you get an error.

Example:

This will work in CF5 but not CFMX. The error occurs on the CFInclude line
that calls this template. The message suggests that the method myUDF does
not exist.

It will work find if I change this to:

I have not seen this discussed anywhere in the Macromedia forums or in the
release notes. The utility that checks your CF5 code for problems does not
flag it.

Anyone have some insight on this one?

Thanks,

Chris

Re: CFMX, UDF and CF Functions

2002-06-06 Thread todd

Chris,

I do this all the time in CFMX with no problems. What happens when you
push this into a block? Also,
is myUDF readily available on the page via include, etc?

x = val(myUDF('this'));

I'm not saying that this will fix anything, it's just something for you to
try. Could you post the code that you're using for myUDF? Perhaps
there's something going on within?

Does the 'system' have permission to read / write to that folder? CF uses
the 'system' user to do things. Just because you can, doesn't mean the

CFFILE Move error...

John,

Btw, my bad... I saw that you were creating directories in the code and I
didn't get that far. If you're able to create directories and such, then

Have you tried using with a regular file (meaning,
take out the dynamic stuff and just see if you can move a regular file
into that directory? Make a .txt file and see if is throwing you
the same error.

You could do a database link to accomplish this as well. Your oracle DBA
would have to set this up, but you can actually query tables on a completely
different server, given the appropriate grants. (We did this while
transitioning from 8.1.5 to 8.1.7.)

I would output your variables and visually see just where thinks it's going and, white space would cause a problem

We're not a hosting house, and from my perspective, free beats cheap. The
thing is, WebSite doesn't really offer any features that IIS doesn't, and I
don't think it's any better than IIS, really. IIS has to be set up
correctly, but that's pretty trivial to do. In that sense, I'm a satisfied
IIS user.

I was playing around with Web services in the CFMX final release and hit a

am getting the following error message:

Steven,

Depends on how much work you want to do. Are you just going to allow a
text blob for the full ingredient(indicates one table) or do you want the
user to type in / add an ingredient at a time (indicates 2 or more
tables)?

something to do with the interaction with the CF server. If you discover

The thing is, if you install IIS correctly, and disable the stuff that you
don't use, it's not a "security patch circus". By default, IIS includes a
lot of features that WebSite doesn't have, and that most people don't use
anyway. It's trivial to remove those unused features, and those are the
things which frequently cause IIS security problems.

Even if it means having to apply a patch every other day? Just curious.
Ever since IIS started getting hacked left and right, I started leaning

Dynamically Naming Applications

2002-06-06 Thread Hatton Humphrey

Is there a way to dynamically create an application name? By this I
mean if you have a user that is accessing a site from two different
browser windows is there a way to separate their sessions?

I have a few applicaitons that have various variables set depending on
the user level of the person logged in. What sometimes happens is that
someone will log in as one user level in one window and a different one
in another. In some rare instances this doesn't cause a problem,
however when they log out from one window (and the applicaiton deletes
the session as it's supposed to), the other window suddenly starts
blowing up all over the place.

My thought was if I could dynamically generate an application name for
the CFApplication tag. Can this be done?

Thanks!

RE: MY recipe Database

2002-06-06 Thread Chris Lofback

Here's one way:

Create a table called UOM (for Unit Of Measure). This table will have a
list of UOMs like Teaspoon, Smidgen, Quart, etc. Your recipe ingredient
table has a FK field that maps to the PK in UOM. Then, whenever you query
an amount from the recipe ingredient table, join to the UOM table and
retrieve the UOM. One advantage is that when adding a new recipe
ingredient, you can then query the UOM table to create a select list of
valid UOMs. Add new UOMs as needed. Code thoroughly and serve hot... :)

You could even expand this and add equivalency multipliers to the UOM table.

I have to be a Dave groupie, and agree ... In the past several years
we've used IIS, we've never (gotta knock on wood here) had any security
problems. We just ALWAYS make sure we uninstall all the silly extras,
and just use the bits we absolutely have to have ... Then we run it
through the security check tools, apply appropriate patches, and away we
go.

Works fine. Of course we like the other web servers out there as well,
we just like to get along with all OS's. You never know when one will
totally get knocked off it's feet and disappear. Always be ready for
anything.

Well, for that matter, I'm a satisfied Apache user, but I and our clients
typically use IIS on Windows and Apache on other platforms.

However, to address your point, the belief that you have to apply patches
every other day is incorrect - if you've configured your IIS server
correctly. By default, IIS includes all sorts of things that you usually
just don't need. And, of course, following the general best practice for
configuring any kind of server, you should remove or disable the things you
don't need. Here are some things that IIS allows you to do:

- handle server-side includes (I use CFINCLUDE for that, and don't deal with
static HTML.)
- allow NT users to change their NT passwords
- allow IIS to handle local print jobs received through a web browser (IIS 5
only)
- allow direct interaction with databases through MSADC
- provide a direct interface to MS Index Server
- manage IIS itself through a browser
(and much, much more!)

Now, I don't need any of that stuff, so I just remove it. If a patch comes
out for it, I don't bother patching it, except when routine maintenance
comes up, when I'll just apply all outstanding patches at once - you can do
this with one reboot using QChain. That's it. Trust me, I don't spend much
post-installation time applying patches.

CF5 truncating my data

2002-06-06 Thread Chris Bohill

Is the following a bug in CF5, and if so has a solution/workaround? It
did previously work in 4.5, but now it is acting very strangely. Has
this change in behavior been documented somewhere?

The problem is occuring on pages that use input range validation for
numeric fields. When the user enters a numeric float value, it gets
converted to integer, truncating the answer, and losing data. This does
not happen in 4.5, yet the code is exactly the same.

This is a serious problem to us, as data is getting lost on the
page-reload.

This is the only info I could find related to the problem, but no
solution.

There's no DNS entry for it in the primary authoritative DNS server for
careerlearn.org, which is CBRU.BR.NS.ELS-GMS.ATT.NET.

query of query problem (again)

Hello all,
I posted something similar yesterday, but I have an easier situation this

I'm just curious (since this thread is still active), is a product like
Apache or other non-IIS products *proven* to be more secure, assuming you
disable the IIS features you don't need and apply the appropriate patches?
That's not a rhetorical question, I'm really asking for people's opinions.

See, I've been of the school of thought lately that, while IIS does have its
security flaws, I think that they get magnified 1000% because it's a
Microsoft product, and hackers and the press will do anything they can to
rip Microsoft. For example, Oracle touted Oracle9i as being "unbreakable."
However, if you go and look at the security patches they've released for it
(a veritable library, not just one or two little things), it clearly was
"breakable!" However, because Oracle isn't as disliked by hackers or the
press as Microsoft is, you don't read about it on the front page of
technical web sites. As far as Apache and even Linux go, are they truly more
secure? It seems to me that those willing to try are more focused on hacking
MS products, and therefore Apache and Linux are as heavily scrutinized.
Again, I'm not claiming that as fact, it's just my impression.

I will concede that MS has had some pretty glaring security holes in the
past with not just IIS, by other products as well. As a side note for those
who haven't read or heard about it, criticism has gotten so bad that the MS
has shifted raises and bonuses from being release-based (i.e., did your team
release a product this year) to security-based (i.e., the fewer security
flaws found, the higher your raise/bonus). To me, that's a step in the right
direction.

But anyway, we use Apache here at my job. While I have no complaints about
it, I would argue that it's "more secure" (inherently, not after
re-programming modules and such) because you have to be a true programmer to
really get into the meat of the product and mess around. You can't just go
into a GUI interface and click a few buttons to disable it.

Thoughts?

Regards,
Dave.

"However, to address your point, the belief that you have to apply
patches every other day is incorrect"

Not really a belief to be honest, I was being a little sarcastic in the
realm of the evergoing IIS (Is it Secure?) joke. I have worked with IIS
before and yes, I agree with all that you've said about removing what you
don't need, etc. You answered my questions already and... I'm not looking
to pick a fight, I was just looking for a discussion in which you've more
than answered already (this being the 2nd email on it). This is good
stuff to read and good things for IIS admins to take into account.

Thanks Dave!

Yeah, but if I try to base it on anything like access date and time it
blows my idea out of the water:

something like

then how do I keep track of what cAN was when I created the application
for that browser insance?

How does CF interact with this?

RE: CF MX works on WebSite Pro (was: RE: Ridiculous Problem!)

2002-06-06 Thread Mark A. Kruger - CFG

I gotta ditto on that. Most of the problems I've seen with IIS stem from
the initial installation ... allowing things that you should disable.
Taking a little more time during the installation saves you a LOT of time
later on. Not every security patch is necessary. Some folks try to install
the default installation of IIS then apply every patch - assuming it's for
them - the "shot gun" approach. A little more careful planning can alleviate
the burden later on. You still have to actually "read" the security
bulletins however (ha).

Works fine. Of course we like the other web servers out there as well,

RE: Dynamically Naming Applications

2002-06-06 Thread Mark A. Kruger - CFG

Ben,

Not to say your stupid... but you are going to create a new application
everytime someone hits any page inside of this directory - including the
application scope and any application variables you have created. No user
will be able to see any application variables from any other user or
even from a previous request - they will be re-instantiated with each
request. This is rather like using the application scope like the variables
scope - not to mention it is probably a resource hog. I think you might try
looking for a different solution.

P.S. from now on this approach will be known as the "Doom approach" : )

Okay, after more testing, I've determined that my query of query gets a
little wacky if you have more than one where parameter.
For example
This works fine:
Where Company = 'myComp'
And this works fine:
Where Location = 'myLoc'
But this does not:
Where Company = 'myComp' And Location = 'myLoc'

Any ideas?

I don't think you're picking a fight, as you're raising valid questions. You
may not believe that personally, but many people do. As an example, a few
months back Gartner Group recommended that if you're using IIS, you should
cease and desist immediately! That's a pretty severe recommendation; I think
that a better recommendation would have been that web server administrators
learn how to configure web servers.

Well, I'm glad they're not using IIS then. However, this is an illustration
of their inability to configure a server correctly, rather than an
illustration of some special problem with IIS. I mean, this stuff is just
not that hard. We're talking about ten minutes of initial configuration, or
one minute if you've written a script to automate the process.

The problem with IIS is similar to the problem with Windows - neither is
designed to serve well as a public Internet server with their default
configurations. If you're going to use Windows for public Internet servers,
then you have to know how to configure them appropriately. The same is true
for IIS.

To some extent, of course, this is true for anything that you're going to
put on an untrusted network - you have to know how to configure it
appropriately.

Yes, I'm aware of the WebSite feature set. However, I think you're missing
my point. Those are all things that should be TURNED OFF on a production web
server - or any internet-facing web server - that isn't specifically using
those features. If you turn them off, you don't have any problems. If you do
need to use those features, then you have to go through some hoops to ensure
that they're set up securely.

As for the MSADC thing, CF doesn't interact with it - and I turn it off.

RE: query of query problem (again)

2002-06-06 Thread Mark A. Kruger - CFG

Ryan,

Some problems (or nuances) are:

The column names are case sensitive - make them all upper case.
The "SUM( )" feature does not work in tandem with the WHERE clause - it
returns the sum of ALL, and does not apply the where filter. The same may
be true of AVG() - but I'm not sure
If you are joining 2 tables together you must qualify the query.columname in
each select (select query1.column1 AS columnA, query2.column1 AS columnB
etc.

That's my short list.

RE: CF MX works on WebSite Pro (was: RE: Ridiculous Problem!)

2002-06-06 Thread Mark A. Kruger - CFG

Dave,

I'd say your on the money here. The DAY after the CEO of Oracle touted 9i
as "unbreakable" Oracle bombarded with hacking attempts (some of which were
successful leaving egg on the Oracle face). MS gets that kind of attack
every day - and unlike Oracle, MS products run on the desktop of every
wannabee hacker HS student in the world.

As far as apache, if you use the default installation, unlike IIS, it's a
very "minimal" install - it is NOT configured with all the features you
might want - and there's no GUI that helps you figure out what it might be
able to do either (which is one of its glaring weaknesses). MS has always
taken the permissive approach - "we'll give you everything and its up to you
to lock it down". The reason for this is that MS's gravy comes from the
desktop world - where regular home users want everything available on the
local desktop. But in the server world, the opposite approach is more
appropriate - "give me the minimum to accomplish my task and I'll install
anything else that's necessary".

When novice PC technicians build their first W2k server, they install audio
drivers, complex video drivers, Bells and whistles, netscape, utilities,
print drivers, QoS services ... even the accessories/games features. All
of it is superflous - and taking up overhead on the server. The first thing
you learn regarding server installation is: Only install what you need -
disable all the services you don't use. Disable all protocols you don't
use install the minimum. I even go into the bios and disable the
parallel port, serial port, IDE controller (if I'm using SCSI) etc.
Anything I don't need is stripped away. Then document the bios settings,
services settings and feature install - so you can check it when you install
the latest service pack or version of software.

Thoughts?

Regards,
Dave.

Michael,

Out of curiosity, why port the threads that are older than Jan 2001? I doubt
that much of that information will be overly useful, considering that CF has
gone through 2 more releases. Also, I would bet that a lot of the "nuggets
of knowledge" from back then have probably been discussed over and over
again after Jan 2001. Personally, I would be happier with speedier searches
(due to less records being searched) with more relevant search results. I
don't really need CF 3.1-related threads! I believe you said you were
putting filters into the search interface. But pre-Jan 2001 seems to be a
little too old. That's just my two cents that I'd be curious to hear your
feedback on.

Thoughts? Thanks again for all your work with cf-talk. It's easily the most
valuable CF resource available.

Regards,
Dave.

On administrators, it says - allow 5 simulatnois connections as default.
what does it mean? only 5 can log in any time?
what will be the best value for that?

Thanks

running CF as user? required?

I'm wondering if running cf as a system account is a major security issue?
I've tried following up several KBs about changing CF-admin/executive into user
accounts
but couldn't - does someone has any info about it?

Thanks!

I'm not aware of any code audits performed on both the Apache and IIS source
code, and I think that's the only way to prove that one is more secure than
the other.

However, the core functionality of the web server itself is well-tested with
both Apache and IIS - if someone found a security flaw with that core
functionality, that would be a big issue, but I don't think that's ever
happened.

There's certainly some weighting in favor of finding problems with MS
products. I don't think it's just about "ripping" MS, either. Just like
Willie Sutton said when asked why he robbed banks, "that's where the money
is". (Actually, that's an apocryphal quote, I think, but who cares.) If you
find an IIS vulnerability, you'll have a vast audience of potential "users".
In addition, you might assume that most don't know how to configure their
web servers anyway - and you'd probably be right.

The thing that makes a default Apache install more secure than a default IIS
install is that Apache doesn't actually do anything other than serve web
pages. If you want it to do something else, you have to set that up
yourself. There's a very good argument to be made that this is how server
products should work - a "deny, then allow" approach to providing
functionality. IIS, of course, currently follows the opposite approach - it
has features that you have to turn off. Fortunately, it's easy and quick to
disable those features, so there's really no excuse for not doing it.

That setting controls how many requests CF can process at one time. If you
have more requests than you can process, those requests will be queued, and
processed when other requests are finished.

It's hard to say what the best value for that would be - it'll depend on
many, many variables. Typically, you determine this value by load-testing
the server with the applications that will run on that server.

RE: query of query problem (again) -- SOLVED???

Okay all,
I found the problem and you're not gonna believe this.
This is the debugging from my queries (I don't have a location of "blah", so
the records should be zero)...

Attempt 1:
Nominations1 (Records=5, Time=0ms)
SQL = Select * From Nominations Where Company_No=4
Nominations2 (Records=5, Time=0ms)
SQL = Select * From Nominations Where Company_No=4 And Location_Code='blah'
Nominations3 (Records=0, Time=0ms)
SQL = Select * From Nominations Where Location_code='blah'

Attempt 2:
Nominations1 (Records=5, Time=0ms)
SQL = Select * From Nominations Where Company_No=4
Nominations2 (Records=0, Time=0ms)
SQL = Select * From Nominations Where Company_No=4 AND Location_Code='blah'
Nominations3 (Records=0, Time=0ms)
SQL = Select * From Nominations Where Location_code='blah'

Notice that Nominations2 in attempt1 uses "And", resulting in 5 records.
Now notice that Nominations2 in attempt2 uses "AND", resulting in 0 records.
Is this a bug? Does a query of query ignore the "and" clause if it's not
capitalized?

Well, yes, there are certainly security ramifications when running CF as
SYSTEM. Any CFML code you write is run in the highest level of privilege in

I haven't run into that, but I'd try using another web service client to

That'll let you know whether it's a problem with the client or with the

RE: Dynamically Naming Applications

2002-06-06 Thread Justin Greene

It seems to me that if you are trying to allow the same person to have
multiple sessions taking place from the same physical browser, then you just
need to track sessions in the URL and not use cookies. This will allow as
many logins as you like from a single machine. There should not be a reason
to dynamically change the application name, you just need a mechanism for
tracking sessions the is URL specific. This does not sound like a
CFApplication issue.

I had assumed that CF would create a new application scope each time a

I asked if I was being stupid because despite the fact that at first glance

I believe that the issue with it "not being that hard" is that most

If you've configured it properly, what risk are you taking? URLScan will
even let you hide the IIS server banner, so no one'll know you're using it.

Re: MY recipe Database

2002-06-06 Thread Charlie

one scenario

one screen, one form

part one : recipe details
part two : recipe instructions
part three : recipe ingredients

submit form to action page

action page:

1. insert recipe into tblRecipes
2. get max recipeid
3. insert instructions into separate table as text field ( or into
tblRecipes in step 1)
4. insert ingredients into tblIngredients using recipeid from step 2

forward user to recipe view page

It requires some initial setup, but here is how I would do it:

create a table Ingredients:
ID - PK, autonumber
Name - varchar(63)
Description_Short - varchar(255) (short description)
Description_Long - Memo (long description, where to buy, seasons etc)

Prefill this table with all the ingredients on earth :)

create a table Recipe_Ingredients:
ID - PK, autonumber
Ingredient_ID - FK, int
Recipe_ID, FK, int
Unit - FK, Int (is the ingredient measured in grams, pints, spoons ..)
Amount - int

create a table Units:
ID - PK, autonumber
Unit - varchar(16)

Next, to enter a recipe people on the first screen get a SELECT box
where they have to select all ingredients. On the next page you generate
all the extra fields for each ingredient, such as units and amount.
Below that is the room to enter the recipe itself. This makes it a
2-click process to enter a recipe. Not perfect, but I think it is a
reasonable balance between database normalization, coding effort and
user experience.

Paul,
Assuming that Num_Origionals and Num_EachSet are text inputs, have you
tried setting an onChange event:

That will have it call a function you create to update the PrintPrice.

QOQ with

Hello all

Can anyone see any errors in this code??

The works the files are displayed in the output.
but the qoq "filelist" returns 0 records. No errors a being thrown I can
see.
I have verified the two records in the list are in the directory, they can
be seen in the list when displayed. I have double checked the spelling of
the file names in the list.
Was wondering if the "-" in the file names could be causing a problem??

Try this:

SELECT *

'B1-R1051-R1.jpg')

Use the commas around each entry desired.

So do I. I'd try some other things first, since CF 5 shouldn't affect ADSI
components in Win2K when you install or uninstall. This might help:

I've seen the order apps are installed affect performance before. we'll
