Yep. When the text list becomes larger its usefulness will decline. Large
things like big text lists should always be handled in small chunks.

I can see that - but I'd consider that a bit different than a cookbook
style guide.

Btw - for folks using the PDF, I'm working on a new version of the PDF
generation that will hopefully be a lot cleaner and include a table of
contents as well.

2006-06-14 Thread Dan Plesse
Ray,

I was thinking something like a trouble tree with each branch a more
defined problem. So if I person has a problem during something like when a
CFC does not load because
someone put a style sheet in the application.cfm file this could be a quick
reminder.
A solution could work the same way.

The cookbook idea is not unique and has been used in other sites and
books as well. Personally I think it works well. I think beginners
tend to think in terms of problems, "How do I do X"? Whereas a more
advanced person knows the language well enough to know basically how
things are done, but may struggle more with the setup of larger
applications.

Logically I wonder if the How-to text list is the best idea. I have over 200
solutions
(the last two were TTS and a unzip solution) and I don't think people are
finding them or if the user does not find a solution at the end of the
branch that person should be able post the problem and get an answer. I
don't think you can group all the problems one could have but it would be
interesting to see. I think a ot of people have such lists on the web, i am
not sure if they are doing any good.

ColdFusion Cookbook (www.coldfusioncookbook.com) hit 100 entries

RE: ColdFusion Cookbook

2006-01-09 Thread Rick Faircloth
I'm sure there are light years of improvement in features and
productivity between 4.5.2 and MX 7...and when I come upon
a business requirement that forces me to spend the app. $650
to upgrade, I will...but until then, I have no need.

I'm just a one-man shop, bulding small websites and apps for
customers...I and my clients don't have the need for speed
that many of the larger websites and corporate intranets would
have.

I also know that every upgrade I've ever performed with major
production software, from video production to Cold Fusion programming
and serving, has had issues that have brought servers for
customers to a halt and caused me to have to spend time
sorting out issues. Not to mention all the new "tricks of the trade"
I'd have to learn, such as CFC's... I'd just as soon avoid that as long as
possible.

I do have a spare server right now that I could test on...but I'm too
busy building sites and apps right now to bother with it.

Perhaps soon I'll do some testing on a development server.

What concerns me a lot more as a self-employed site and app builder
is Microsoft's new OfficeLive or whatever the online version of MS Office
is called...I see where they're going to offer one-stop shopping, including
business websites as part of the package...that could really hurt me a lot
more than not upgrading to MX 7...

4.5.2 may not be broke, but MX 7 has a ton of productivity improving
enhancements. And the Java stuff is over-rated, I've never touched the
Java side of MX myself. I think the best thing that Java brings to CF
is it is easy for Macrobe to port CF to other platforms.

RE: ColdFusion Cookbook

2006-01-07 Thread Rick Faircloth
Oh...I missed your question about CFLib...

I rarely use tags created by others...only twice have
I done that since I started coding CF...at first it was
out of ignorance and preferring to cook up my own
solutions so I understood them well.

Currently, however, the content on CFLib is irrelavent
to me...it's for CF 5 and MX...I'm *still* using 4.5.2!

4.5.2 still does everything I need and when CF shifted
to a Java-based (or however you would now describe it)
the talk on CF-Talk got way beyond me really quickly,
since I know nothing much of Java. And the problems
discussed were such that I couldn't relate to them and
it scared me off from upgrading.

But the main thing is, again, 4.5.2 will do whatever I've
asked of it so far, runs flawlesslly...so "If it ain't broke..."

RE: ColdFusion Cookbook

2006-01-07 Thread Rick Faircloth
I've got RSS setup and Pluck installed, but after a month,
I've never even bothered to look at it again...just not enough
"to the point" material and just another information interface
to have to deal with. So far, I haven't gotten much out of
RSS...but that may just be me...

My primary interface for info is email...I'm in it all day everyday
with clients, CF-Talk, etc., and having the info come there
is much better for me...consolidation of sources takes less
time for me to parse information.

"Enter email..." would be perfect. However, I don't like emails
that address more than one specific point at a time.
I would much rather have the topics come to me with the
title and description *as they are entered* than have one email
come to me with 15 different topics to have to deal with...same
way I prefer getting a continuous stream of CF-Talk rather than
a digest...I would have to parse through everything in the digest
to see if there was anything of value or interest to me. With
constant streams of single topic emails, I can tell just by looking
at the subject line whether to glance at the preview pane or
quickly hit the delete key.

I hear you on the "reach out" part. Do note that there is an RSS feed.
Would a simple "Enter email addy here to subscribe" be enough? I could
then send email once a week, like CFLib.

You've _never_ been to CFLib :) Can I ask why?

RE: ColdFusion Cookbook

2006-01-07 Thread Rick Faircloth
I don't know about CFLib...never used it.

The question would be what benefit would their
be to registering...I would certainly like to receive
an email everytime an entry is made. I can glance
over the email and delete it or go to the site to
flag it as important to me.

And if registration gave me a way to build a "personal"
library from the entries...yes, I would register...absolutely.

I would probably rarely visit the site if the site doesn't
reach out to me through email...I think that's key
to any site's success today.

I'm just always looking for ways to make content more
useful and accessible to site users...

Man...I'm disappointed Ray...searched, but couldn't find

Looks great and simple to use...I like the idea of comments.
What are your thoughts about allowing people to register
and setup their own gateway page, or perhaps, as Michael
has done for HOF, allow users to tag entries they think are
especially useful to them?

Re: ColdFusion Cookbook

2006-01-06 Thread Aaron Rouse
Will you be adding a way to post comments on things put up? One of the
things I noticed that bit a developer in my group was the mentioning of
Val() on this one:

http://www.coldfusioncookbook.com/entry/15/You-need-to-test-a-string-to-see-if-it-is-a-valid-numeric-value
..

If the numeric number is rather large Val() will return the number in
scientific notation. I do not have a pre CFMX box to test it on, but from
what I remember the developer had always done something along those lines
prior to CFMX to get a number then it started to bomb out in MX.

Of course it is way past my bed time so I might be remembering the details
wrong on that one. My question more of general curiosity on the design and
the whole Val() stuff was just an attempt at maybe an example of where
something could be put in by a person.

This conversion has turned way OT, but I'll add my 2 cents.

Are you sure they even have Napoleon Dynamite in the UK? I know it's a
huge hit over here, but they might not even know what it is. It has a
lot of our culture in it, after all... ;)

:)

In my case it would be more like this:

1) Preheat oven to 375
2) Mix 1tbsp garlic poweder, 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper, 1/2 tbsp onion salt,
oregano, salt, fresh ground black pepper to combine.
3) Saute shallots and minced garlic in butter
4) Cover bottom of 9x13 baking pan with frozen tater tots.
5) Layer shallots and garlic over tater tots, along with a liberal
sprinkling of the garlic powder mixture.
6) Cover with gruyere cheese and bake for 30 minutes or until cheese is
golden brown and bubbly on top.

:)

Nope, my wife can't cook to save her life, just like almost every other
women I know and nor do they want to, and the ones I know that can, hate
doing it, they do it just because they have to.
I'm the chef of the house :-)
Women only tended to cook because they had to, or because it was expected of
them in my parents/grandparents day. Women these days hate cooking and
generally see it as a chore for their lazy husbands who wont get off their
fat asses and do anything for themselves. Nowadays it's a mans world and men
enjoy doing it. Look at all the TV chefs.

Anyway this is soo off topic

RE: ColdFusion Cookbook

2006-01-03 Thread Cornillon, Matthieu \(Consultant\)
Ray,

This does sound like a great idea. I can't claim to be expert enough to
be writing any chef entries, but I am a PITA proofreader (folks never
like me because I actually find all the errors--grin), and as a
medium-level CFer, I know enough to be a sample user of the thing. So,
I'd love to help out in that capacity if possible. I guess that means
that I am volunteering to be a sous-chef, or maybe potwasher.

As for specific ideas:

1) There are a lot of free resources out there that are fantastically
useful on various other topics branching away from ColdFusion. For
example, sites that give SQL tutorials, etc. When you get down to
certain levels of detail in addressing topics, you could have links off
to such sites, perhaps.

2) Examples examples examples! Well-written explanations are great, but
the more novice you are, the more examples you need to have it make
sense, I think.

HTH,
Matthieu

I'd like to announce the creation of a ColdFusion Cookbook. The site
will be found at:

www.coldfusioncookbook.com (not up yet)

The idea is simple - provide a set of simple problems ("how do I do
X") and solutions, as well as alternative solutions. (Since we all know
CF provides many ways to skin the cat...)

While the site isn't quite ready yet, I'd love to get some feedback on
what you would like to see on the site. I hope to have something up
within a few days and will post again when the initial site is launched.

is usually a collection of recipes not just from one cook, but a collection
from many...each complete from ingredients (requirements and options) to
instructions on preparation (coding), resulting dish (CF solution),
*and* presentation (how to implement the solution)...

RE: ColdFusion Cookbook

2006-01-03 Thread Andy Matthews

Yes, eventually I think thatd be a good idea too. People could submit
questions, registered users submit answers... You could even put a voting
system in place... "Was this question/answer helpful" or whatever. That
might make it easier for YOU to do some house cleaning monthly or so rather
than monitoring every question/answer before letting it through.

An RSS feed will definitely be included, but probably just for the
last N articles, like cflib.org works.

RE: ColdFusion Cookbook

2006-01-03 Thread Rick Faircloth
If I were doing this, I would allow other CF "chefs" to submit
their recipes for the site...like the way most people build a
real cookbook...a cookbook is usually a collection of recipes
not just from one cook, but a collection from many...each
complete from ingredients (requirements and options) to
instructions on preparation (coding), resulting dish (CF solution),
*and* presentation (how to implement the solution)...

Hmmm...I think I'm getting hungry... ;o)

I wonder, Ray, if you could allow each CF "chef" to register
and create their own cookbook of favorite recipies from the
myriad of recipies on the site.

That way, instead of coming to the site as a whole each time,
the "chef" would interface with the site in a way customized
with their favorite solutions according to their specialty and "taste"...

I'd like to announce the creation of a ColdFusion Cookbook. The site
will be found at:

www.coldfusioncookbook.com (not up yet)

The idea is simple - provide a set of simple problems ("how do I do
X") and solutions, as well as alternative solutions. (Since we all
know CF provides many ways to skin the cat...)

While the site isn't quite ready yet, I'd love to get some feedback on
what you would like to see on the site. I hope to have something up
within a few days and will post again when the initial site is
launched.

I think the difference will be in how the information is setup. It is
my understanding that easycfm and communitymx are more general, like
CFDJ. My idea for the cookbook is to be a bit more particular. I.e.,
every "article" is simply a question and an answer. So for example,
"How do I email a form to myself?"

So the site may not end up terribly different, but hey - resources are
resouces. :)

re: ColdFusion Cookbook

2006-01-02 Thread Mike Kear
One of the great things about this ColdFusion discipline is the wealth of
free, or nearly free material to learn from. As we al lknow its next-to
useless trying to find an up-to-date course on ColdFusion at a tertiary
educational institution. So I applaud Ray's initiative. And with Ray's
amazing knowledge and wisdom it's bound to be a wonderful thing. I like the
whole notion of "cookbook". I've seen other cookbooks in other disciplines
(one of my favourites a few years ago when i was tinkering with solder and
wire and transistors etc was a electronics cookbook)

But how will this be different to easycfm.com and communitymx.com? Itn't it
just duplicating what's already done?

(incidentally I took a look around communitymx.com while they had a open
house last week - most impressive. Far more wonderful content than I ever
imagined was in there.)

And perhaps categorizing by framework use as well since that will be a
useful yardstick for many developers.

Fusebox, Mach II, Model-Glue for HTML application frameworks
Tartan, ColdSpring for model frameworks
Arf!, objectBreeze, Reactor, Transfer for ORM frameworks
 etc ...

Got frameworks?

Hi, Ray...

Sounds like a great idea.

Consider categorizing the solutions by CF version
as well as difficulty, e.g. easy, intermediate, difficult.

I'm sure there are other ways to categorize the cookbook
information, too, but those were the first ideas that
popped into my mind...

ColdFusion Cookbook

2006-01-02 Thread Raymond Camden
I'd like to announce the creation of a ColdFusion Cookbook. The site
will be found at:

www.coldfusioncookbook.com (not up yet)

The idea is simple - provide a set of simple problems ("how do I do
X") and solutions, as well as alternative solutions. (Since we all
know CF provides many ways to skin the cat...)

While the site isn't quite ready yet, I'd love to get some feedback on
what you would like to see on the site. I hope to have something up
within a few days and will post again when the initial site is
launched.
