Did they say that they had implemented a change, or what they're doing?
This is completely irresponsible of a network administration to simply
implement something that could effect millions, without so much as a
warning, URL as to where we could find info... SOMEthing.

Completely insane

RE: AOL? (Resolved?)

2002-12-19 Thread Matt Robertson
One of my client just mailed to their association membership. The list contains about
4000 AOL addresses, and this isn't the first time they've done that. While I add some
cfmailparams to make the mailpiece more standards-compliant, I don't change the mailer
name. Deliveries went thru fine.

I cross-posted the advice one of you got from AOL to the Declude list (they're
discussing the problem there, and on the Imail list as well) and their listmaster
posted this back:

>FWIW, that may just be generic advice from AOL, and not
>specific to the problem they are having.

>For at least a year or two, AOL has used the lack of a
>reverse DNS entry to penalize E-mail as part of their
>"secret" (undocumented) anti-spam system. The lack of a

>be deleted by AOL, but it is used as part of their anti-spam
>formula (along with the publicly documented system at
>http://postmaster.info.aol.com, which bounces E-mail rather

RE: AOL Problems

2002-06-20 Thread Mike Brunt

Oh AOL, so popular. My problems with AOL related to their dynamic proxy
system, if this is still the same what happens is that the user IP Address
changes several times during a single-user-browser session hope that makes
sense. So if any part of your application uses large amounts of client
identification or tracking, that could be an issue.

Could be an obsolete version of AOL, which:
*may have problems with JPGs that have extra info, such as thumbnails
embedded
*may not like your HTML. Have you flattened the page and run a
validator? Look for stray table tags.

RE: AOL Problems

2002-06-20 Thread jon

Probably an HTML rendering error.

Have you validated the code? You might've forgotten to close something
somewhere... The AOL browser is extremely finicky about that stuff,
especially depending on the version he's uses. (AOL users, as a whole, do
not upgrade their browsers. ever.)

.. now, problems with AOL users, that's a whole different story altogether.

I think AOL switched away from that a long time ago. They got too many
complaints about the havoc it was causing. I did a test where I stayed
logged in to AOL for a few hours and checked my IP address every so often,
and I had the same IP for the entire session. However, when I logged out and
then logged back in, I had a new IP address (which would make sense because
I'm sure they don't "lease" addresses).

As for the blank pagesdon't know. But depending on the version of AOL
he's using, he could still be using a version that doesn't use the IE
engine. So I'd go back and triple check your code for missing table tags and
that sort of stuff. I know the old AOL browsers choked on it just like
Netscape.

Regards,
Dave.

I believe that the newest version of AOL is using a Gecko
browser...We all know how that is. Anyhow, I would check over
the code very well and make sure their are no unclosed tags and
the such, I miss them sometimes myself. Have you tried your app

Well, I used to run into an issue where if they were on a virtual host and did not
have a dedicated IP address, AOL users running old clients may not be able to see the
site. This was due to AOL not supporting HTTP 1.1 -- I haven't seen that in a while

Well my first thought is considering AOL is backed with the Netscape

I would make sure that all TAGS are closed properly as Netscape is

Try using Netscape to view your site.

Here's an article that mentions that AOL's beta uses IE.

Sheesh, I'm like a week behind...and there has been no discussion of the in
Mozilla-land, strange. They released the Mozilla based beta in March, and
now they release an IE based beta. Maybe the Mozilla based AOL is bound for
only the non-Windows machines AOL wants to get into?

RE: AOL mayheim

2000-10-10 Thread Simon Horwith

I haven't been following this entire thread, but you've got to remember that
for all intents and purposes, AOL is a cached intranet. AOL (or anyone
else) cannot cache pages that are dynamically changing based on database
content... or at the very least, they cannot keep very current copies of
dynamic sites on their network. From AOL's standpoint, the statement that
they are not "ColdFusion" friendly makes sense.

RE: AOL mayheim

2000-10-11 Thread John Allred

Thanks for this insight, Simon. According to this logic, Cold Fusion would
not be singled out by AOL. It would not be friendly to any server
technology that presents dynamic pages based on database content, including
ASP, PHP, and Domino.

Can you or anyone else shed some light on just how far behind AOL's caching
is? For instance, if I have info on a site that changes daily, how long
will AOL users go between snapshots? This would help me explain to AOL
users what they're not seeing.

RE: AOL mayheim

2000-10-11 Thread Simon Horwith

Boy, that's a tough one. I'd ask the folks at AOL, to be honest. Good luck
getting an answer anytime relatively soon, though. If you are able to get
the stats from them regarding frequency of caching, etc., please do share
the numbers with this list. I don't target AOL users, nor do I generally
even stop to think about what my site is going to look like to an AOL user,
to be honest. However, AOL users do represent a large audience, and I
probably should be more concerned about how my clients' sites look to them.
If you discover any tips, tricks, or standard procedures for making a
dynamic site more "AOL friendly", I'd be interested in knowing about it, as
would many other folks on this list I'm sure. You are correct in your
statement that AOL's problems are not ColdFusion specific, in regards to
their probable inability to cache dynamic sites. These problems would exist
for any dynamic site technology, not just CF. Until you get answers from
the folks at AOL, my best advice (if this is a real concern of yours) is to
post a little disclaimer for AOL users stating the possibility of outdated
material and the like, and let them know you're working on it. Of course,
the best thing for you to do is to download and install a free AOL trial
membership, and view your site the way other AOL user would.

2000-10-11 Thread Deanna L. Schneider

I think AOL might be doing something funky with their caching servers where
dynamic content is concerned, anyway. AOL is hitting our server every three
seconds. Now, we're not that popular of a site, and it's used mostly by
internal folks (who do not have AOL accounts). AOL said it's because we have
a dynamic site, so they hit it more often. Go figure. (Our server admin did
actually speak to a human at AOL, but as far as I know, the frequency of
hits has not gone down. We've resorted to scheduling our front page to run
once a day and write out as html instead of cfm, to minimize some of the
load on the cf server. But, that only works if your content only changes
daily, like ours.)

Or you could use what I use, which is to append a random number as a dummy
argument to all urls, thus tricking the proxy cache into thinking all the
pages are different.
eg.

in application.cfm:

in template:

Click here to get the non-cached page

This works perfectly and requires no futzing around with meta tags.

On the contrary Gavin:

The very last note on the page states:

Site administrators may also use HTTP (not HTML META tags) cache control
headers that include the following:

- Cache-Control: no-store
User requested object from originating server

- Cache-Control: no-cache, no-store, private
Originating server has requested no caching

- Pragma: no-cache
Originating server has requested no caching

The specific information for configuring a web server is server-dependent.
However, the "Expires:" header is documented in the HTTP reference
documents, and can be found in the current standard for HTTP/1.0.

Miscellaneous
META HTTP-EQUIV tags in the content of web pages (in either HEAD or BODY)
cannot control the behavior of AOL's proxy caches. The proxy caches do not
read HTML.

Don't do this part!! They will require your credit card number, you'll
cancel the account before the trial is over, and then your credit card will
be billed until you find the correct 800 number to call them. Then you'll
argue with some one for a while. Your credit card will then be credited a

If you haven't already goto http://webmaster.aol.com/ and read their own

I missed the original post, but one idea to help caching problems is to add
a unique number to your query string and have it change for each page.

The number of AOL users is far greater than the number of Netscape users, and
web developers are jumping through hoops to be compatible with those users. It
seems logical to test everything on AOL as well.

Also, you can get an unlimited AOL account for 9.95/month if you access it

Don't do this part!! They will require your credit card number, you'll
cancel the account before the trial is over, and then your credit card will
be billed until you find the correct 800 number to call them. Then you'll
argue with some one for a while. Your credit card will then be credited a
few months later. I've seen this happen time and again. Yet another reason I
hate AOL.

If you haven't already goto http://webmaster.aol.com/ and read their own
account on how fouled up they are.

I missed the original post, but one idea to help caching problems is to add
a unique number to your query string and have it change for each page.

The simplest answer is not to use ? and & in the URL

Start using / (and either / = or . as the name/value separator)
Fusebox has a function to do this, or a simple bit of code will handle it

Match the listed browser identification (sub)strings against your

If it's because of DOM or other client side sripting issues:
The AOL browser is bascily just IE5.5, but may be Gecko on some platforms.
Write good complient HTML and you'll be fine.

There's a quick and easy way to fix that problem..

Any visiter with a UserAgent that contains AOL should be sent to a random
URL of any ISP in the world as long as its not AOL, BT or Compuserve.

Not that I think that AOL is the spawn of some nether region and should be
banished back to whence it came ;oD

Didn't your mother teach you any Manners? Postings another sites
vulnerability to a list of people you don't know? hmm..did you email the
webmaster at AOL, that would have been a better idea. Do you have a

Also, you effectively shoot yourself in the foot when you post a hack to a
CF site. If it get's hacked it looks bad on CF. They stop using CF, and
next thing you know your client says "I don't want to use your CF solution
cause I heard AOL just got hacked and aren't using CF anymore!".

I can't say I agree wholeheartedly with this statement. The sooner these
issues are brought to light the sooner they can be addressed. I would much
rather bring the problem to light and have it fixed then sit back with my
fingers crossed hoping that the vulnerabilities aren't discovered. If
Phillip (the original poster) discovers this vulnerability then other people
can too. It seems to me that CF's reputation (and that of its users,
developers, and proponents) is better served by *fixing* any vulnerabilities
than by sweeping them under the rug, so to speak.

However, I don't mean to say that I agree with this vulnerability being
posted to the public forum in the manner that it was. Out of professional
courtesy, if nothing else, someone that discovers a vulnerability in
another's site/application should contact the affected party *privately*
first, thus giving said party a chance to address the issue. The implied
threat of a public announcement might help speed things along, however .

Now, to switch topics, what exactly is this "SQL Server exposed URL
parameter hack"? This term doesn't ring any bells. Is this a CF specific
issue?

I agree with you and have emailed [EMAIL PROTECTED] repeatedly about the
situation and have yet to see any results. As for my thoughts regarding
posting vulnerabilities to a public forum such as this listserv: a) many
times the only way to get the attention of the offending parties (i.e.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]) is to tell the world (as I have yet to see a fix for the
AOL.com problem I reported to them many days ago.) and b) I would imagine
that of all the places I could post this vulnerability, the people on this
list would be least likely to exploit it, because as you said, it makes CF
looks bad, and we don't want that.

To quote the almighty l0pht:

or perhaps trade them for something?"

RE: AOL uses CF!

2000-05-01 Thread CFM

So I just wrote a post saying why I think everyone would benefit from being
nice to people on this list rather than being mean. But I don't want to add
any more fuel to another mini-flamewar.

All I want to say is, we're a community who should be supporting each other,
and slapping people down when they bring us information that they're excited
about is really rude and exclusionary. Shutting people out or shouting them
down because you (think you) have more knowledge doesn't help anyone. If you
(this means anyone) can't understand that, then maybe it is you who doesn't
belong on this list.

I fully apologize now for appearing in any way rude, obnoxious, exclusive or
anything else you might thing i'm being. I just think we could all stand to
act a little more professional and kind, that's all.

I don't know if that's possible, and I don't know how useful that kind of
test would be anyway. To ensure that something works acceptably through AOL,
you'd really have to have it go through AOL - through their network and
proxies. An AOL account is just one of the costs of testing.

You can get AOL for $4.95 a month if you limit your online activity to 3

I just found something kind of odd in the web logs for one of our clients
and I'm wondering if any of the fine list membership can shed some light ;-)

There are a number of page requests from and AOL IP range (first 3 sets of
number the same...the last set changes). It is obviously the same person
(based on their path through the site...and referring pages)...but the last
number in the IP changed every couple of minutes. Do AOL users all get
funnelled through proxy servers or do their IPs change that fast?

TIA

It's a way of representing subnet mask - it basically tells you how many

Re: [RE: AOL and Caching]

2000-05-03 Thread MATTHEW EHRENS

AOL does not cache objects containing a Question Mark. This is checked first,
regardless of file extension / mime type. Most CFM's fall under this category
... however, your root page will probably not: ie: http://www.company.com/

Other than that, you can use those Cache-Control Headers Michael Sheldon
mentioned below. You really should only need Cache-Control Headers for
objects that don't contain question marks...

More details on AOL's caching at:

http://webmaster.info.aol.com/index.cfm?article=12

Thanks,
Matt

What AOL says, and what they actually do, are two completely different
things. Not only do they cache pages with URL variables, they cache form
submissions, cookies and HTTP authentication headers. I've had several of my
dynamic sites compromised in this way, and in one case had a serious
security violation caused by their caching of the HTTP authentication
headers.

AOL is not a good neighbor, and they do not act in good faith.

The only thing I can think of is to give them a lot of bad press, but with
all the reasons for their to be bad press about AOL it either isn't getting
noticed by the media or it isn't having any effect on the customers. As
long as their customers think this isn't a problem or think the problem is
with our sites and not with AOL, AOL won't change this.

No visible output. This just sets certain values in the HTTP headers that

RE: [RE: AOL and Caching]

2000-05-04 Thread Mike Sheldon

Use the header functions as outlined below. They work fine for prevention of
caching.

To a certain degree, it does not bother too much me that they cache dynamic
pages. I pretty much consider it my responsibility to set the headers
properly to tell the proxy that the page should not be cached.

However, caching cookies and http-authentication data is so obviously wrong
as to border on "criminal stupidity".

Anyone know why AOL doesn't receive mail sent by CFMail (CF ver. 5.0). is
there a header issue I need to resolve or something?

Yeah I would like to know also. AOL users account for a majority of internet

It's actually an old problem. I remembered reading about it when using CF
3.0+. AOL has listed the CFMail X-header as a spam signature

X-Mailer: Allaire ColdFusion Application Server

One easy fix is to use the MAILERID attribute in CFMail:

I ran a number of tests with this and it hasn't failed yet.

I tried harcoding the MAILERID to "Binford Mailblaster 2000" and never
received the message :)

I think you might be out of luck. I'm not sure exactly how someone using
AOL 5 as opposed to AOL 6 would cause different caching settings to be used
on AOL's server. It is possible that users of different versions of AOL go
through different proxy servers, but it seems like a silly thing to do. It
is possible that there are some differences with the way the software
interacts with the server that make this a requirement, but frankly, I
can't imagine what they are. It seems more likely that the problem is in
the browser software that the client is using. (Yes I realize that the
browser software is actually AOL 5.)

But the weird thing is that it is your session variables that you are
having a problem with and those are on your server. Somewhere, your server
is getting confused about which computer has those session variables or
something. You've tried passing CFID and CFToken, so there are not many
things that could be causing this problem.

Have you tested this in AOL 5 yourself so you know that it isn't user error
causing the problem? You need to make sure that it isn't just that the
client is trying to use the system in a way that would not work anyway:
timing out, sending links to others with his/her/its CFID and CFToken
included in the URL. If you've already determined that user error is
definitely not the problem, you should contact AOL and ask them if there is
anything that you can do.

Re: AOL and Session Var's

Bill:

That really doesn't make too much sense too me either because AOL actually
uses the IE browser and have been since 4.0. They might have their cookies
turned off in the AOL 5 settings or something like that, so that the CFID
and CFTOKEN are lost. But since you said you have passed cfid and token
through the url and form, I have no idea. I can test with my AOL 5.0 if you
would like.

Serious question tho...  One benefit is that I can at least test my apps

Is there another way of doing this?

Anyway, haven't used the AOL client for months (other than testing) and
just connect directly through a DUN but from memory you can recieve
emails from anyone... (up to AOL 9 anyways)

Re: AOL and spam filtering

if you use cfmailparam to change the x-mailer param you'll probably
get the messages through.

By default CFMX sets xmailer to:
X-Mailer: ColdFusion MX Application Server

which is probably what is being caught by AOL as spam. Change it to
appear as MS Outlook with "Microsoft Outlook 8.5, Build 4.71.2173.0"
and see what happens,

Re: AOL and spam filtering

2004-10-24 Thread Matt Robertson
There could be more to it than that. I've personally never altered
the X-Mailer, and many of my clients email thousands of pieces to AOL
members daily without trouble. However CF used to have at least one
problem that needed a param to prop it up, which I still use (not sure
if MX fixes it but I don't think so): No message-ID:

There's a lot more that could be causing your mail to be dumped. AOL
may have decided that your mail server is a spam factory. This may be
for reasons that have nothing to do with you if you are on a shared
host and that host is bombing folks via accounts you have no control
over.

Also the content of your message may be tripping a Bayesian filter
mechanism. I'm not sure if AOL does content-based filtering.

Or if you are blasting out mail in one big shot, which is very
efficient from your end, you might be getting hit with a temp
frequency block from AOL (although from what I have seen in this case
AOL refused to accept the mail in the first place... that may have
changed) You can either go thru the AOL postmaster's whitelisting
process to lift yourself above the unwashed masses, or trickle down
the speed of your mail to bypass AOL's and others' frequency
filtering.

Personally my clients have never had any trouble with AOL. I use
trickling and the message ID only; The clients send large (up to
100k) html mails without incident. they also never go over about
10,000 emails in a batch. We trickle out at about 15 every 6 seconds,
with the CF administrator set to flush the mail queue at its minimum
interval of 5 seconds. With testing you can probably increase the
number of mails per interval by a fair margin; perhaps as much as
doubling it.

http://mysecretbase.com/Slowing_Down_CFMail_2004.cfm

If AOL is your sole issue I'd consider talking to them about
whitelisting yourself and see if you hit any surprises like they hate
your mail server for some reason.

If the error is not resolved.. checkout the following..

Also if you run your own SMTP server.. good idea to sign up.. for AOL
white list.. so you get a report every time.. someone reports.. one of
your messages as spam.. and track down the cause of the problem..

Its important that you try to get on the white list as during the

I use the CFMX cfmail tag to send emails from a database query. Alot of
AOL users are reporting that they are not receiving them. Most of the
time this is due to AOL recogniging the emails from the cfmail tag as
spam and it ends up in the persons spam folder. Many people are not
computer savvy enough to check their spam settings or folder and just
end up complaining that they are not getting their emails.

Is there some code that I can include that would minimize AOL seeing my
email as spam?

RE: AOL and spam filtering

2004-10-25 Thread Gavin Brook
I've recently had to go through the whole AOL white listing process. Our
mail server was experiencing a temporary block at AOL's mail servers. I
phoned AOL and they explained that this temporary block was due to the fact
that a certain percentage of the mail we were sending was being reported as
spam. They weren't sure of the exact threshold to trigger this block, and
were cagey as to the reporting spam process.

I went through the white list application, which was relatively painless.
Your emails must conform to their standards, which basically means putting
contact details on them, and clear instructions on how to be remove from the
list. There also needs to be a reverse DNS entry for the mail server. To be
sure of acceptance we made our newsletter conform to all of the requirements
exactly and we were added to the white list.

Part of this process is being added to a list which returns emails that have
been reported as spam. Even with the white list status, I get around 5-10%
reported as spam. We've even had end users complain that they've signed up
for the email and haven't received it.

I'm not sure how exactly the default spam setup on AOL works as these
bounced emails seem to be random, as opposed to the same user bouncing the
email back. We've got a list of around 50,000 subscribers to our newsletter,
and the only trouble we have is with AOL. Our newsletter is written exactly
as AOL requires, yet still some are being bounced back as spam from users,
and they complain about not receiving them.

You would think conforming to their standards meant that their default spam
settings wouldn't reject your emails!

Gavin
