Or it could be from a '70. Mine looks pretty similar on my '70 Malibu. Don't know if

Has anybody tried Mr. Clean Auto Dry Car Wash? Sounds like a good idea
given
that it's the wiping (especially dry-wiping) that causes those spider
web
scratches in clear coat. I assume it needs to be followed by paint
cleaner,
wax, etc. When I had my black Saab (a.k.a. Black Saabath), I sued to use
all
the Meguiars stuff and always thought that it worked great Neither of my
old
cars have ever had a paint job worth worrying too much about, but I am
going
to want to give my new car its firs wash/wax pretty soon.

they put an X-pipe on it and it and did 3 more pulls. It gained 8 hp and the

RE: [Chevelle-list] Tire sizes

I
have 235/75R15 on my 70 and I have the front lowered about 1 ½ in
the front and I have the 15X8 chrome rallys (but I dont remember
the backspace offhand) and these tires are just too tall and turning into
driveways, I do have some tire rub on the fronts with the top of the inner
fender well at the top bolt/fenderwell. Occasionally, I will see a very slight
rub on the sidewall on the rears also. (but only occasionally). Also depending
on what gears you have, that tall of a tire might hurt you. Right now, I only
have 2.73s and it kills my 60 times. I do plan on going to around
26 26.5 tall tires when these wear out.

Hi everyone: Most of us are
probably using 60 series and 70 series size tires. The radial redlines I
want are made by Coker and come in the taller 75 series which also has less
tread width. Does anyone know what the largest is that will fit a 65 in
front or will the taller tires give me clearance problems or what. I'm
currently running 235/60/15's all around with no problems up front and a little
rub in the rear on good bumps with a later year 12 bolt. I'll be getting
new wheels with 1/2 in more backspace from the standard 4in. I've been
told that the 235/75/15 redlines may give me problems in front even though the
tread is over 1/2 in less. I could probably be safe and go with 205's on
front and 225's on rear but I don't want to short my self. the sales rep
thinks the 235's may be OK on the rear. He says they're not supposed to
give technical advice. I'm ready to spend a bunch of $$ and he's not
allowed to give advice!! Any other place to get radial redlines??
All comments and advice will be greatly appreciated. BTW the wheels I
like are the Weld Draglites. I think they look good on a 65 and after 2
years of soul searching and dumping the rallyes, that's my decision.
Didn't have rallyes in 65 anyway. Think out loud guys girls and let
me know something. I've been on this list for a while and I know the
answers are out there. Thanks to all.

Sea Foam is good, but with that many
miles, it may loosen up too much and clean it out too much. It may make it
start using oil because of the increased clearances with it all cleaned out. I
used to sell the stuff years ago when I worked at a parts warehouse and heard
some stories like that. It does , however, do some good cleaning out if used
somewhat regularly.

[Chevelle-list] Detonation question

2003-11-26 Thread Brian Zack
Title: Detonation question

What are the things to look at to avoid detonation? I have a 350 w/ 9:1 compression and a pretty mild cam. I run the med grade fuel. If I am getting some detonation under load, Do I need to look at timing, fuel mixture, jetting? I am at around 5000 to 5500 ft in altitude. I have a hei dist. w/ the pertronix kit and am running 10 degrees initial timing the factory setting on the adjustable vac. advance (I think its 16 degrees) and the lightest springs on the weights (The weights and springs came with the kit). At the strip trying to tune it, I had to use the lighter springs otherwise, my times were around a ½ sec. slower with the heavier springs. The carb is the edlebrock 600 cfm elec. choke and I put the 1 step leaner primary rods in. No actual jet changes. As far as going to the strip, I dont think I can make it out again til next year, (I think it already closed) so tuning there wont be an option. Right now, I do only have the 2.73 gears and 28 tall tires, which is probably contributing to the extra load condition. Any opinions?

This engine has the stock cast 76cc heads with the ports lightly smoothed out and your
basic felpro head gaskets. I am running the flat top cast pistons. This engine has
just under 20K miles on it. I think it is detonation I'm hearing. I seem to be able to
hear it now with my flowmaster exhaust. (It seems I can kinda hear it through the
exhaust). I am planning for and trying to save up for some s/r torquers and a bigger
cam for hopefully next spring. I'm planning on the comp cams xe262. The cam I have now
is the crane energizer cam w/ .440 lift and I think its 260 duration I'm not sure of
the @ .050 dur. When I built the engine, I didn't measure how far down the bore the
pistons are. At that time, I didn't know anything about the DCR and I asked for 9:1
pistons and don't know if these pistons were manufactured a little further down than
desirable or not. I can only guess at my measurements. Right now, What I can figure
from my guesses is my DCR is around 7.4:1 to 7.5:1.When I was considering heads
for the future, it was either the vortecs or the world s/r torquers, but, I think the
vortecs would make me have to run a lot more expensive fuel because of going to a DCR
of around 8.5:1. The total advance of 26 you have doesn't include how much advandce
the weights and springs add. I'll have to check how much those add, but from memory, I
think total was around 48 degrees.

Brian,
Did this dentination just start? I assume you hear it?
First off, when we talk detination, static compression means very little.
You need your cam specs and then you can detirmine your dynamic compression
ratio, which is what ultimately detirmines what fuel and timing you can run.
The second thing I ask is if this is a newer combo what heads do you have?
How far in the hole is you piston at TDC (some call this deck heighth) and
what head gasket are you using? This will detirmine your quench distance
which is crucial in avoiding detination. Head design makes a big difference.
A newer heart shaped chamber can run a bit more compression with out
detintation. Also are you running a cast or alum head? Again alum can take
much more. If you have this info and send it my way I can do some
calculations and get a better feel for what your combo should need. What
engine temp does your engine run at when it detinates?

For working with what you got... more fuel will help with detination so I
would fatten it up. I would also highly recomend running the premium grade
and seeing ifthat helps. Your timing isn't much if you are running 10 and 16
for a total of 26 degrees so I doubt that is your problem. I'm not real
experienced at running at the altitude you are. I'm sure this plays a role
in things as well.

Send out a bit more info of when this all started and your specs and I will
see what I can do.
Mikey

Vacuum don't count as total advance. When I read your post I
thought you were adding vacuum advance to the mix because 48
is way to much. If it pings at light throttle take some out
of vacuum . On my vortex head 383 max is 32 degs, 10 ini with
22 degs distributor, vacuum I use 10 deg pod. If you add it all
up = 42. You need to ck the advance at 3500-4000 rpm with the

Your original post said the detonation occurred under load. If this is the
case, changing the vacuum advance may not help since it will not be
kicked-in under load. In that case, you need to change the initial (damper)
advance, and/or total advance by the springs and weights (or the advance
curve).

10 degrees at damper + 22 at weights and springs (I think) + 16 vacuum
advance. That is where I got 48. Is that not correct? Is total not including
vacuum too?

It is already at 32 degrees. 10 initial +
22 centrifugal. Doesnt the vacuum advance help with gas mileage? It does
sound like maybe the vacuum advance is too much. Is that why you said to
disconnect it for now? I have tried premium and it didnt make much

32 if you want to run your current fuel.

First thing first brian disconnect
the vac advance for now cause it will make no difference at WOT or for total
advance. I assume your engine is liking 10 degrees inital timing more then 6 or
8 degrees? If that is the case leave it at ten. Then change yourcentrifugal
to get you total advance (initial+ centrifugal) to equal 32 degrees.

I read somewhere that you should use a wheel cylinder hone to hone out the
lifter bore when they are scratched due to pulling out a wiped out
lifter. After wiping out a cam lobe this is probably the best fix to insure
that the new lifter will rotate on the new cam. Haven't tried it but it
sounds like a good idea.

that sells both new and used parts, specializing in Chevelles and El Caminos,
and they are parting out a 71 2 door Chevelle (which is what I have).
They also claim they will beat the prices of any of the big
catalogs if you send them an e mail with a parts list.

Anybody else ever heard of

Who do you all recommend
for parts ? I've heard Year One has the best resto prices. True ?
Opinions ? Advice? We just bought our 71 Chevelle a few weeks ago and

I'm not sure what a
rolled cutout is, but as the guys says, the dash instrument carrier
could be from a Monte Carlo. The back of the dash carrier would have been cut out for a
convertible top switch either way, regardless of which fascia was applied. I have
an OEM Olds dash carrier here and it has cutouts in the back for something like
two or three switches that were not options on the car it came out of, but the
face plate does not have the holes cut through.

[Chevelle-list] hei advance weights adjustable vac. advance.

2003-08-29 Thread Brian Zack
Title: hei advance weights adjustable vac. advance.

I bought the pertronix tune-up kit which comes with the cap, rotor, coil, module, weights with springs bushings, and the adjustable vacuum advance for my sb 350. When you install the weights for the advance kit, the lighter springs the advance comes in 23 degrees by 3000, the med springs 23 degrees come in by 5000, and the heavier springs 23 degrees in by 6000. I would assume that for my mild 350 daily driver, I would want it all in by 3000. Am I correct in my thinking? How about where I would want my Vac. Advance to be set? It comes set at 16 degrees. I hear total advance to be around 36-38 degrees. Does that sound about right?

[Chevelle-list] HEI tune-up kits

2003-08-14 Thread Brian Zack
Title: HEI tune-up kits

Looking to upgrade my HEI distributor and was looking at summit and jegs. All of the kits I was looking at have the cap, rotor, module, coil, adjustable vacuum advance, advance weights springs, and bushings. There seems to be a bit of difference in prices.

Proform-79.99

MSD-137.99

Pertronix-119.99

Have any of you had any experience with any of these? Proform good or bad? I was thinking on staying away from Accel being that my current Accel cap and rotor (stock module and coil) which have only been on there 1 year, are all worn out and carboned up and carbon tracking. I dont know if it is just because of the rest of the ignition needs better quality parts added or not.

exactly what it sounds like. Install it, connect three wires and you're ready
to roll. This distributor is much like the HEI, except it does not have an
internal coil. If the bulk of an HEI won't fit in your engine and you want a
simple and clean ignition system, this is the distributor for you.
Built down inside the
billet aluminum housing there is a powerful inductive ignition module. This
module is responsible for sending plenty of spark energy to the coil no matter
what rpm you're at. The distributor relies on MSD's race proven magnetic pickup
for accurate trigger signals.
Just above the pickup there
is an easy-to-adjust mechanical advance. MSD supplies different advance springs
and stop bushings so you can custom tailor an advance curve to match your
application. Also, a vacuum advance canister supplies great cruising economy!

Actually, a daily
driver is a good place for a high-perf ignition. Theres really no
downside, other than the initial cost, as opposed to a cam, where a
better performance cam is offset by rougher idle, worse mileage,
etc. I did two upgrades on the ignition in my Chevelle. The first
time was just a basic tune-up cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and coil.
I dont have the numbers to back it up, but I did start getting better mileage
(it took me less gas to get to the drag strip!). A year later, I added an
MSD 6AL and I noticed it would start and run better when cold.

An MSD box might be
a little more than necessary for a daily driver, but Im a believer in
bigger, better spark since re-doing my stuff.

It sounds like a very nice car. It really
depends on what someone is willing to pay for it. Although I definitely am not
anyone who could accurately tell you what a 67 is worth, it sounds like
it could demand money comparable to a SS. I might guess 13k-16k? Again Im
no expert (and may be too low) but Im sure many of the people out there
have more money into their cars than we could get out of them. I would think

As you are aware, Chevelle SS' are worth significantly
more than Chevelle Malibus. I have a 67 Chevelle Malibu that I
have upgraded and runs great. My question is for those who have Malibus. Do you
question whether your putting more money into a classic that may not get you
your return back if you decide to sell it in the future ? Not trying to offend
anyone, just curious on whether I should trade up to a 66 or 67 Chevelle SS.
When I start looking at my receipts I wonder if I am passing the point of more money
than actual value or worth of Chevelle Malibu. A legitimate question to
ponder...not to piss anyone off in this great forum.

Oh, here is the breakdown on my 67 Chevelle Malibu.
Let me know your opinions on value or worth of this Chevelle. Thanks.

This 1967 Chevelle MalibuSport
Coupe has the following:

- new paint (original Capri Cream
and gold interior). Rear cove panel is painted satin black.

- new SS hood and SS rocker panels
(this is not a clone)

- new 383 stroker engine (with a
nice 268 H Competition

 Cam) mated to original
powerglide transmission. The

 transmission was overhauled
and powerbands adjusted.

There is 383 badging on front
fender panels where a 396

badge would normally go.
Has Malibu script on rear panels

so this is not an SS clone
but a survivor 67 Chevelle

Malibu that looks like an SS
but maintains its originality.

- new carpeting (with dynamax sound
deadener onthe floorboards. No rust on floorboards and I coated inside floorboards
with rust preventative prior to installing new carpeting).

- new headliner with insulation. New
sails and visors.

- like new seats and interior
(gold=original color). Front bench seat with small aftermarket console on
floor.

- stereo sound system with 4
speakers and two subwoofers

(I have two speakers in
kick panels and kept the original

 kick panels). The rear
panel has two 6 x 9 speakers that

 are covered by gold
mesh so looks original. The two

 12 inch sub woofers are
in the top of trunk with panel

 cover, along with amp.
All quality eclipse stereo

 components and
professionally installed. Head unit is

 below dash and original
Chevy Delco stereo still in place.

- no rust; clean trunk and clean
underhood (I was planning

 to have trunk upholstered in
the near future).

- new radiator, heavy duty Stewart
Warner high volume water pump, shroud, and heavy duty Derale fan. Runs at a
consistent 185 degrees insummer heat.

- new exhaust system; 2.5 inch pipes
leading to Dynomax mufflers (welded ultraflows); The mufflers turn down under
the rear bumper. Hooker coated headers.

- new chrome bumpers

- carb rebuilt= Carter AFB
Competition Carb

- accel ignition coil

- new Autometer guages (all other
guages work, e.g., temp, alternator, parking brake light)

- new felts for windows; new trunk
seal

- Viper alarm and hood lock

- new high torgue starter (note:
Chevelle starts up quick).

- new Optima battery

- new fuel tank; and new sending
unit

- new heater core; all heater
controls and blower fan work as

 well as defroster unit.

- new grounding cables from engine
to frame, etc.

- The 10 inch bolt rear end was
overhauled with new fluids

- BF Goodrich tires

- Shocks in ok condition

- Good power steering unit

- New points, condenser, and
rotor/cap. Good spark plug

 wires.

Has protecto plate and documents
found under rear seat. This is a very reliable, fun car to drive. If I keep it
the only upgrades I will add are HEI electronic ignition and front power disc
brakes. Has everything else.

I just drove this car from Tulsa,
Oklahoma to Maryland. I averaged 18 mpg. Runs great, and strong. Many
compliments on the road. Again, this car is not a 1967 Chevelle SS. However, it
is a clean and attractive 1967 Chevelle Malibu Sport Coupe that is extremely

reliable and a great cruising
vehicle. Sounds like a hot rod muscle car. I made upgrades to enhance driving
fun

Hi Brian,

Back in the old days
angle plug heads were the hot ticket because they moved the spark plug closer
to the center of the cylinder. Now-a-days with the advanced combustion
chamber design - fast burn, high swirl, relocated valve angles, etc., angle
plug headsare no longer an advantage.

So, what are
the advantages or disadvantages and/or reasons for using angled plugs
or
straight plugs in a small block head? Do they work better with
headers? Better spark angle for better ignition? Just looking at the
options on aftermarket heads and was wondering which is better for what
applications.

If it is the same as the

A question to the fellow header-users out there...

Is it pretty much a rule of thumb to have to use a
starter heat shield if you have headers? I keep
having problems starting my motor after it's been run
for a while, but if I give it a few hours and fires
right up. I'm pretty certain that it's the starter
getting hot, but this is my first time having headers
on an SBC and wondered if it was a common problem.

I find this whole issue fascinating actually- how
does the heat actually destroy the starter, when it
does nothing but sit there? Does it damage the
solenoid? Never thought heat would do that.

A question to the fellow header-users out there...

Is it pretty much a rule of thumb to have to use a
starter heat shield if you have headers? I keep
having problems starting my motor after it's been
 run
for a while, but if I give it a few hours and fires
right up. I'm pretty certain that it's the starter
getting hot, but this is my first time having
 headers
on an SBC and wondered if it was a common problem.

 Thanks,

 Upholstery/John Nasta Is
 Correct

From 1969 on, the SS was no longer a separate model.
Instead, it was now an SS option package added to
 a
300 Deluxe model, Malibu model, or El Camino Custom
model. 1969 was the only model year that the SS
package could be ordered on the base model Chevelle
 300 Deluxe (as a 2-door coupe or a 2-door post
 sedan).
The only SS option in '69 was the Z25 SS-396
package. The '69 and up cars are harder to
authenticate because the VIN can not be used to
confirm if the car is an SS.

There were two colors that were exclusive to the '69
SS. Monaco Orange (code 72) and Daytona Yellow
(code 76). If either of these paint codes appear on
the cowl tag (and the cowl tag is genuine) then that
would prove the car to be a genuine SS.

If someone had a nice '69 Malibu, and a rusted out
 '69
SS, it would be easy for them to simply move the SS
equipment over to the Malibu. As long as they did
 not
alter or move the VIN plates or cowl tags, this
 would
be perfectly legal, and since the VIN tag doesn't
 tell
you much, there would be almost no way for you to
 know.

From '69 on, single-piston disk brakes were STANDARD
equipment with the SS package. These brakes are
 easier
to find parts for than the earlier four-piston disk
 brakes.

Chevrolet literature indicates that the only way to
get a 396 was with the SS package. However, there
appears to be at least one late-production Chevelle
that was built with a 396 and all the required SS
equipment, but the Z25 SS-396 option was not
 listed
on the car's build sheet. It is believed that this
 car
came from the factory with SS emblems, but that is
 not 100% certain.

Again in 1969, the only available SS engine was the
396 (in the same flavors as in 1968). In 1969,
however, it was possible (if you knew who to talk
 to)
to order something called a COPO 427 Chevelle. COPO
stands for Central Office Production Order. The
 COPO
program allowed dealers to order equipment that was
not usually available (such as special paint,
 special
engines, etc.) Unlike the '68s, the '69 Chevelles
 had
their 427 engines installed at the FACTORY, not the
dealership. This makes the '69 427s more legitimate
 in
the eyes of collectors today. You didn't necessarily
have to go to Yenko or some other special dealer in
'69 to get a 427 Chevelle. Your local dealer could
usually get you one if you filled out the right
paperwork. While the '69 COPO 427s had basically the
same equipment as the SS-396s, they were not
 generally considered SSs
because they did not have any external SS or 427
 identification. They
were the ultimate sleepers. Any genuine '69 COPO 427
 Chevelle is quite
valuable today. There are also unconfirmed reports
 of a '69 COPO 427 El
 Camino.

In addition, there was an L89 aluminum head option
available for the '69 375 HP 396. Few were ordered.

1969 SSs had SS/396 emblems on the front, back,
fenders, door panels, on the dash above the glove
 box,
and on the standard SS steering wheel. The '69 SS
 also
had the twin-bulge hood like the '68s, but the bolt
holes where the hood hinges attached were slightly
different. The '69 SS came with 14 SS wheels with
SS center caps. The '69 SS stripe option consisted
of a black, white, or red stripe which ran along the
upper body sides. There are also reports of a few
 '69
SSs with dealer-painted hood stripes, similar to the
stripes used on many '70-'72 SSs.

Another rare car, produced only in '69, was an SS
Chevelle built on the 2-door post sedan, the
 Chevelle
 300. This was the only year that a 2-door post
 sedan
SS was produced. Most of the '69 SSs, and all the
'70-'72 SSs, were built upon the 2-door Malibu
 pillarless coupe.

So, what are the advantages or disadvantages and/or reasons for using angled plugs or straight plugs in a small block head? Do they work better with headers? Better spark angle for better ignition? They are supposed to give a little better performance, but I can tell
you that angle head plugs on a SBC are a PITA to change.

Unless you want the last little bit of power, I'd suggest sticking with
the straight plugs.

And Sarge is right, you have to get headers that will work with them,
and they are usually more .

good luck,

As Sarge said, headers are the
place to pay attention. Before you buy any head (straight, angle, raised
port), make sure you have a header that will work with the heads AND your
car! I have been running into this issue with my angle plug, raised port
heads for my Corvette. So far I have found a grand total of ONE
manufacturer (Sanderson)who says their headers will fit my situation.

Want to see what happens when you
have the wrong combo?

You can see from the pictures that
if the center tubes were routed to the outside instead of the inside (swap the
way they go into the collector), then I would not have had a problem at
all.

Brian, Mainly you need to be sure you specify which
plug angle you have when buying headers. On my 327 with straight plugs and
Hookers, all my plugs are very easy to change except #6, which is directly
behind a tube.

Again from the Schreib-Atherton book I mentioned earlier, the rebuilder
that
they talked to (Jay Steel of Taylor Engine in Whittier, CA) doesn't like
the
all-Teflon seals. He feels they restrict guide oiling too much but if
they're
used then bronze guides should also be installed because they survive
better
under reduced oiling conditions. His choice is a rubber umbrella seal
with a
Teflon inner liner/scraper but I used all-rubber umbrella seals.

ok guys...

I had a chrome Mr. Gasket version
that is supposedly right for my car. I attached it in the position you guys are
saying, which is the only position that makes any sense, looking at my motor...

When I started the car, at idle, the
timing mark was

WY off... when
shooting the timing light, the mark was showing up at about 12 o'clock on the
damper...

So I adjusted the distributor and
brought the mark to between the 6 and 8 BTDC marks...

The idle dropped down, so I bumped
it back up a little...

Floyd, I was always under the
assumption that advanced timing would cause overheating... am I wrong on this??

Thanks for the help all, even though
I'm Chevelle-less...its much appreciated

Dan,
The timing tab can be anywhere you want to put it as long as you then
use
that position to establish true TDC of piston #1 on the dampener and mark
the dampener accordingly. Factory placement for both SB and BB chevys is
drivers side of the timing chain cover (about 1:00 or 2:00). If you buy an
aftermarket bolt on it will use two bolts on the drivers side of the timing
chain cover and when bolted on should be real close (provided the mark on
your dampener is correct).

[Chevelle-List] Blower motor switch/relay question

2003-07-07 Thread Brian Zack
Title: Blower motor switch/relay question

In my 70 Chevelle Malibu, my fan speed switch has been acting temperamental lately. With the fan on, I have had to wiggle the fan speed switch and get it in the exact right position to make the fan work and it only works on high. I just leave it on high and it has been working. This morning it was working and when I went to lunch and came back, I couldnt get the fan to blow again. When I wiggle it to try and get it to work, I hear a clicking under the dash from somewhere. The blower relay is in the engine compartment. What is under the dash that could be making the noise? The car has factory AC. When I checked the blower motor when this started happening, I ran a temp. hot wire to the motor and it was working fine. Im thinking it probably is just the fan speed switch. Any opinions?

What sealant
would you all use when reinstalling the rear glass? I would assume I could
either buy it at a paint supply house or a glass shop. Im contemplating
trying to remove the rear glass myself so I can fix some small (pinhole) rust
spots around the dried up rear window sealant. I
was thinking on drilling a hole in the window channel and running
some
sort of stainless steel line down and out the bottom at the back

water that sits in the window channel. Any comments?

I have the big bar on my '70. I believe it might be 1 1/4 on the

Don't
quote me on that. I bought a 2nd-Gen F-body bar off eBay. The
improvement
in handling (and more specifically, less body roll) is drastic. I love
it.

However, I think your car needs to be in the 11s before a sway bar could
really hurt your straight line performance (more specifically, hindering
weight transfer). Unless you trailer your car to the track, I wouldn't
recommend disconnecting the sway bar.

As for the sideways motion, Lahar, I think that's called a powerslide..

Yeah. You are probably right, being the rear end widths being different
on other cars. But now you got me thinking. I think I recall someone on

RE: [Chevelle-List] Q: Todays most stupid question?

2003-06-17 Thread Brian Zack

If that reservoir is dry, You may need to bench
bleed the master cylinder too. If you get air in the master when it is mounted
in place, You may not be able to bleed all the air out of it while its on
the car.

RE: bench bleeding a new MC RE: [Chevelle-List] was Q: Todays most stupid question?

2003-06-17 Thread Brian Zack

Usually, instructions come with the new
master. If I recall correctly, you just run the tubes (in a bench bleed kit ) from
the brakeline fittings outlets on the master up into the reservoir, fill up the
reservoir w/ brake fluid, and use something to depress the master cylinder
piston and cycle it in and out till you dont get any air bubbles coming
out of the rubber lines you ran up into the reservoir. Then put it on the car
and add the brakelines back to the master being careful not to spill too much
out when you connect the lines. You may need to still bleed a little air out at
those lines, but mot much. Then bleed the rest of the system. If I have missed something,
Someone please add it in.

IDLE MIXTURE

The Edelbrock Performer Series carburetor has
conventional Idle Mixture Screws (IMS) that provide a leaner A/F when turned clockwise
and richer A/F when turned counter clockwise. The idle air flow is
controlled by a conventional screw that opens the Primary Throttles. The
following procedure should be used to set the idle mixture and
speeds.

I don't think so. When you turn counter-clockwise,
you create more space
inside, letting more gas flow. When you turn
clockwise, you close the gap,
letting less gas through. No?

I should know this by now, but I don't

To make the air fuel mixture more lean on my

or
counter-clockwise? My guess is the latter, but
I
wanted to double-check.

Nope, they adjust the gas. The air comes in through that big hole in the

  IDLE MIXTURE

The Edelbrock Performer Series carburetor has
conventional Idle Mixture Screws (IMS) that provide a leaner A/F when turned clockwise
and richer A/F when turned counter clockwise. The idle air flow is controlled
by a conventional screw that opens the Primary Throttles. The following

To unsubscribe from this service you must first
purchase a
Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation
Unit. The unit can be
obtained from most hardware stores and dental clinics.
Be sure to obtain the proper permits to operate the
unit from the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Food and Drug
Administration in
Washington D.C. USA.
Be sure to carefully unpack the kit and place each
component in its
accompanying mesh safety bag.
Mount the Pershing DF4 mesinator on top of the
perforated Gerring Mach
77 refibulator and attach them using the
eight-millimeter torque fork.
Be sure that the refibulator is mounted at a 66 degree
angle and
properly dispersed so that it is flush with the curved
section of the
Pyrex thistle tube.
Place the four sections of the triangular separation
gear into the
posture cylinder and lock them into place using the
band aid adhesive strip.
Insert the wiggling pin into the wobbling hole, making
sure that it
seated correctly.
Place the D cell battery and the eleven 9 volt
batteries in the power
chamber.
The device should be calibrated before operation using
the optional
digital corkscrew accessory pack prior to operation.
Insert the digital corkscrew through the electronic
combustion service
chamber using caution not to touch the reinforced
tungsten igniter
control module and quickly turn the inverter drive to
28.6 degrees.
Turn the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription
Cancellation Unit upside
down and hit the bottom plate with a 48-ounce
ball-peen hammer while
shaking the unit vigorously.
Force open the door to the incineration valve
compartment and set the
pressure gauge to 719 psi.
Close the door and seal it shut with duct tape.
The unit should now be properly calibrated and ready
to use.
Before activating the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable
Subscription
Cancellation Unit, you must first elevate it to a
height of 229 feet
above sea level to insure that the unit receives the
proper oxygen level
and barometric pressure.
Point the aerial to 17 degrees north by northeast to
within the
parameters of the Telstar GS-2 weather satellite and
apply pressure to
the wing shaft on the southern most section of the
modular accelerator.
Using the special ratchet adapter supplied with the
unit, rotate the
heater core to the on position. The on position
has been obtained
when the green light begins to flash, signifying that
the red light is
about to go off.
Once the red light is off, flip the toggle switch
labeled ON/OFF to
the ON position and count to 47 before logging on to
the system.
Logon using your username and password and wait for
the prompt.
Once prompted you must check the box with the
appropriate action you
wish to take and then press the pressure release
button and turn off the
compressor while turning the hand crank at 231 meters
per minute.
Next, press control, alt, delete, caps lock, shift,
number lock, escape
and tab simultaneously.
Press enter. You will have one second to complete the
procedure.
If you fail to respond in the time limit allowed,
simply purchase a new
Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation
Unit and start from
the beginning.
Please remember that this is the only way we will
accept for you to
unsubscribe from this service.
We have made every attempt to simplify the procedure
for your
convenience. Failure to comply with the unsubscribe
policy will result
in immediate termination of your subscription so
please follow the above
directions closely

Why not install an electric pump as an
auxiliary source of fuel? Prime the carb with the electronic pump before
starting and use the engine-driven pump as your main supplier. After
  starting,switch off the electric pump.
Putting one in the tank will probably require
a custom tank;not cheap. I would recommend it if you were running EFI but
  not a carb.

is a registered trade mark of P-S-T. I wonder if they're essentially the

Speaking of tires...I went to a local place after getting a quote at a
recent show for wheels and tires. The tires were a bit more than some
places, but the wheels seemed like a good show price, so I went down to
the local outlet today. There was a minor disagreement over whether the
price was for Rally rims that had the center's chromes vs. painted. Well
the price went from $58 per, to $90 per. I left and am not going back.

Anyone have a good source for chrome rally rims?

What kind of tires do you buy for non-original radials? I am looking at
BF Goodrich T/A's or Goodyear Eagles raised white letters.

I seen places I can buy tires online and have them shipped cheaper than
I can buy them locally. Anyone bought tires this way before?

We had my mom's Jaguar sandblasted and it cost us $700. I called to have my

69 Chevelle blasted and they wanted $1100. That was on a rotisserie lift
also. Too much in my opinion so I sanded the whole car down myself with 80
grit and a DA sander. I used sand to blast a few of the parts like the
doors, hood, trunk lid, and under side of the fenders. Sand will work, but
it will blow holes through the sheetmetal if the pressure is too high.
Glass
bead or baking soda is the best to use from what I heard. You can rent a
commercial blaster for about $150 for the day and get the job done in a few
hours. This is what I plan to do with my 69 Charger.

RE: [Chevelle-List] blasting a body

2003-01-13 Thread Brian Zack
You could always use the stripper Aircraft Remover It's nasty stuff though
so you have to use gloves and peel the bubbles up paint off with a putty
knife and neutralize it with water after. (You do have to use gloves when
applying and when scraping and make sure to wash it all off otherwise
nothing will stick to the body afterwards)Man that stuff burns. Used it on a
'71 Monte years ago and it works great.

The problem with using sand is it can warp and work-harden body panels which
ruins them. Sandblasting a car takes an expert that really knows his stuff
and those people with the expertise are uncommon. I just wouldn't do it.
Even if it costs a little more, the other methods will ensure a good job.
This is not a good place to be scrimping on money.

I'm assuming with the talk of sand being to abrasive that you can get sand
in a corse and fine grade, but even the fine is too corse to the novice
 sandblaster.

 Is this correct?

RE: [Chevelle-List] Conv Top hose blues

2003-01-10 Thread Brian Zack
Dont know if the ends are specific or hard to find or not. Maybe a local
hydraulic pump and hose shop could make you up some. Or if originality is a
concern, maybe one of the chevelle resto places lists some. Year one or
Original parts Group? I Had to have some power steering hoses made up for a
previous family car and this is what I did.

Nothing like showing your age...

Troubleshooting to see why the top isn't working in my '70 Malibu. On my
way to discovering the ground wire isn't connected for the motor/pump, I
lift one of the hoses and it breaks right in 2 spilling hydraulic fluid all
over . Convertibles not even covered specifically in my Haynes book, so
could use some help as its totally new ground for me. Can someone give me
some pointers in replacing the hoses, best types of fluid, bleeding the
system etc. and/or point me to a good reference?

Thanks!

RE: [Chevelle-List] 383 Stroker Engine in 67 Chevelle=Oil Pressure too Low ???

2003-01-07 Thread Brian Zack

There
is a plug in the passage just above where the rear main cap bolts in and if that
plug isn't installed, the oil bypasses the oil filter and I believe the oil
pressure is lower because of that. Just something to check. I dont know if that
would be the first thing to check as it isn't an easy job unless the motor is
out of the car. I built my 350 (my first motor by myself) and I have 20psi in
drive warmed up (approx. 200degrees) and I didn't check if that was left in
there when the block was bored. I wonder myself if that is causing it and
haven't wanted to pull the engine back out to check it out yet either. Just
something to check. Good luck.

[Chevelle-List] 383 Stroker Engine in 67 Chevelle=Oil Pressure too Low
  ???
I posted this on the Team Chevelle Tech List and seek additional inputs
from Chevelle and other auto experts. Thanks.
I have a 383 stroker engine in my 67 Chevelle. The engine has
supposedly 2500 miles on it. I have also just put in new autoguage meters.
The issue is the oil pressure readings. When starting at cold, the pressure
is up around 40 plus. At warmup if I am driving it the 40 to 60 mph
range, the oil pressure is in the 30 to 35 range, usually staying around
  32.
However, at idle the oil pressure is around 10 to 12 psi. Sometimes it
drops to 8 psi. If you put it in neutral at a stop light from drive (I have
automatic trans), it will climb back up to 12 psi at idle. If you put it in
reverse at idle it drops to 6 psi.
When accelerating again from idle the oil pressure goes up in
increments, based on speed, to 30 to 32 psi--where it remains constant.
My concern is the idle pressure. Is this oil pressure at idle too low and
should it be higher ? Change oil pump or pick up tube ?
I have had conflicting opinions and seek addtional advice.
There is no blue smoke or knocking that I can detect at this time. Engine
runs smooth and strong and I do not appear to be using or burning oil.
  Thanks,
  Ken McDee

Hi Brian, yup, we are all here.

I'd just like to say thanks for unsubscribing while you were away as
quite a few seem to forget how busy the list can be. Their mailbox fills
up and then sends me (the list admin) all of the bounced mail.
You can always 'catch up' online at:

I've
also heard that the fuel pressure regulators can cause that. My Dad had a
suburban that I think was doing that. And he replaced the regulator and it
worked fine. Just something to think about.

  Dont
quote me on this, as I don't have any FI setups of my own, but I think there
is something where the TPS needs an adjustment. At any given position,
the TPS gives off a certain voltage signal and that it needs to be
adjustedtoa specific range with the throttle closed. You'll
need a digital multimeter to do it. My friend who I remember telling me
about this isnt home (I just tried calling). Look around for a procedure
for replacing the TPS and you might find the info. Hope this gets you in
  the right direction.

  question

Before I start driving my "new" 87 Jimmyevery day, I'd like
to fix one small problem, maybe someone onthe list canpoint
me in the right direction.

The engine is a TBI 350 (I've never had a TBI before). It
runs great, but occasionally, when you take off from a stop the engine
will stall. Fortunately it starts right up so the stalling is more
of a nuisance but I'dstill like to fixit.

The previous owner said he replaced the Throttle Position Sensor
and rebuilt the distributor. I think there's something wrong with
the TPS or TBI itself. If I hold the rpm just above idle while
holdingthe brake, it won't stall, but if I just let it idle where
it's set it's more likely to stall when Itake off. I was
going to raise the idle to see if that helped, but I didn't see an idle
adjustment screw.

If anyone has any experience with a TBI or has any suggestions I'd
really appreciate it. Thanks.
