[Chevelle-list] Off Topic - Tea Bags

2009-03-12 Thread Daniel Solomon

Sorry if this off topic post bothers anyone. I normally only post stuff about
Chevelles, just a little frustrated at the way Congress has been spending my
hard earned money.

Thought this sounded like a good idea.

IF THIS IS NOT YOUR CUP OF TEA, DELETE IT, IF IT IS COMPLY!

There's a storm abrewin'. What happens when good, responsible people keep
quiet? Washington has forgotten they work for us. We don't work for them.
Throwing good money after bad is NOT the answer. I am sick of the midnight,
closed door sessions to come up with a plan. I am sick of Congress raking
CEO's over the coals while they, themselves, have defaulted on their taxes. I
am sick of the bailed out companies having lavish vacations and retreats on my
dollar. I am sick of being told it is MY responsibility to rescue people that,
knowingly, bought more house than they could afford. I am sick of being made
to feel it is my patriotic duty to pay MORE taxes. I, like all of you, am a
responsible citizen. I pay my taxes. I live on a budget and I don't ask
someone else to carry the burden for poor decisions I may make. I have emailed
my congressmen and senators asking them to NOT vote for the stimulus package as
it was written without reading it first. No one listened. They voted for it,
pork and all.

O.K. folks, here it is. You may think you are just one voice and what you
think won't make a difference. Well, yes it will and YES, WE CAN!! If you
are disgusted and angry with the way Washington is handling our taxes. If you
are fearful of the fallout from the wreckless spending of BILLIONS to bailout
and "stimulate" without accountability and responsibility then we need to
become ONE, LOUD VOICE THAT CAN BE HEARD FROM EVERY CITY, TOWN, SUBURB AND HOME
IN AMERICA. There is a growing protest to demand that Congress, the President
and his cabinet LISTEN to us, the American Citizens. What is being done in
Washington is NOT the way to handle the economic free fall.

So, here's the plan. On April 1, 2009, all Ameicans are asked to send a TEABAG
to Washinton , D.C. You do not have to enclose a note or any other
information unless you so desire. Just a TEABAG. Many cities are organizing
protests. If you simply search, "New American Tea Party", several sites will
come up. If you aren't the 'protester' type, simply make your one voice heard
with a TEABAG. Your one voice will become a roar when joined with millions of
others that feel the same way. Yes, something needs to be done but the lack of
confidence as shown by the steady decline in the stock market speaks volumes.

This was not my idea. I visited the sites of the 'New American Tea Pary' and
an online survey showed over 90% of thousands said they would send the teabag
on April 1. Why, April 1?? We want them to reach Washington by April 15.
Will you do it? I will. Send it to;1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Washington , D.C. 20500 ...

Forward this to everyone in your address book. Visit the website below for
more information about the 'New American Tea Party'. I would encourage
everyone to go ahead and get the envelope ready to mail, then just drop it in
the mail April 1. Can't guarantee what the postage will be by then, it is
going up as we speak, but have your envelope ready. What will this cost you?
A little time and a 42 or 44 cent stamp.

What could you receive in benefits? Maybe, just maybe, our elected officials
will start to listen to the people. Take out the Pork. Tell us how the money
is being spent. We want TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY. Remember, the money
will be spent over the next 4-5 years. It is not too late.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Sail Panels

2008-12-29 Thread Daniel Solomon

Bob,

I didn't cover my sail panels, I bought them pre-covered. But I can offer you
some advice based on my experience with adhesives. Some of this has already
been said.
You are going to want to use contact adhesive. The best bond would be with a
liquid contact brushed on both surfaces. Porous material like fabric and board
require two coats. Apply the first and allow it to dry. Apply the second and
allow it to become tacky (does not stick to a clean finger) then press them
together. Acid brushes work great for small areas. If you have done it right,
you wont be able to pull it back off. Properly dried contact wont stick to
anything but other contact coated surfaces.
This will only be good for the back side as it will soak through the fabric.

If you are concerned about the front side, I would recommend a 3M spray
contact. Leave the fabric oversized. I would apply a coat to the board, a very
light coat to the fabric and then a second coat on the board. Again wait till
it becomes tacky (does not stick to a clean finger) and assemble. You might
want a second set of hands because when it touches its stuck. Then you could
start trimming, cutting darts, wrapping around the edges, etc. Unfortunatly the
spray stuff is not going to work as well on the back side so the best results
would be had by buying both the liquid and the spray.

I have a quart of the liquid if its worth the road trip. Also have extra fabric
if it doesn't turn out as you expected the first time.

I had some left over from the restoration that I performed on my Chevelle -
they were original and looked a little used. I cleaned them up as well as I
could but they just didn't look right so I got new material and tried to glue
that on usung the 77 spray adhesive. I had to cut the darts as well to get it
to form smoothly around the edges, etc. After one summer - they started to
bubble a little, I ordered pre-done ones and those are in now - they are
starting to bubble as well. I'll have to try something new. I think I'll have
them recovered by a professional interior/trim business - maybe a thicker
backer board will work.

There are no nuts where the front sway bar bolts up, just holes drilled in the
frame and threaded. Very weak and a common place to be stripped out because the
metal is so thin.

Re: [Chevelle-list] HELP..Rust front and rear window channels...

2008-12-09 Thread Daniel Solomon

POR-15 literature gives you the impression you can just remove loose rust and
brush. I disagree and would expect that rust would eventually come back. The
stuff is a cyanoacrylate coating that creates a seal to block moisture. My
recomendation is always to remove as much rust as possible. I used it to
prevent the light surface rust or rust in the bottom of pits from ever coming
back as well as taking advantage of its durability and chip prevention. Kind of
a security measure. I did my frame about 5 years back and it still looks great.
I top coated it more for appearance than UV protection as I mentioned on my
website. Thanks, Dan "It is a mistake to allow any mechanical object to realize

Not sure what you mean by window channels but POR-15 is not for use on metal
you plan to paint. Even when coating frame and suspension components, it is
best to remove as much rust as possible. Its definitely not a cure all for

Re: [Chevelle-list] Some feedback on the 70 seats and the tank

2008-12-07 Thread Daniel Solomon

Charlie,

The floor pan is the same whether or not you decide to go with a bench or
console and buckets. I would try to find someone close by to get the floor pans
to save on freight and damage. The best way to get the big stuff is at a show
but it's the wrong time of year for that. There is a parts dealer in New Jersey
that was listed on www.chevelles.com called Classic Auto Parts & Accessories
732-787-9599. I don't have any experience with them but if they are close and
carry sheet metal, it may be worth a call. All the sheet metal is about the
same no matter who you buy from.

I dressed my Chevelle as an SS without C.I. badges and put in a 350 because I
had it. Once I got it on the road, it was nice to drive but it really needed
the big block. I am s happy now! Engine, paint color and choice on stripes
is all personal preference. Personally I am a purist and like the GM colors.

I would blast the frame yourself. I picked up a sand blaster from Harbor
Freight that worked great. If you choose this route, make sure you wear a
respirator. Powder Coating is the most durable finish you can put on a frame
but that's a job that you have to pay for. Paint will be Ok but susceptible to
stone chips and rust. Might want to consider POR-15 as well. Requires a less
critical removal of the rust (bonds better to light rust) and is very durable.
Can tell you more about the stuff if you are interested.

I packed up the stuff and will mail it out on Monday. Hope it helps. Thanks, Dan

Jim, They are worth more than that. Big items don't sell well on Ebay because
of the freight cost. I would guess they are worth $75-$100 each to someone who
wants a core for re-plating. Maybe you could do a local add on Craigslist to

No nibbles on the 68's yet, but I did sell my 69 front bumper (which was not an

Bill,

Tip from your Uncle Rich; make a spare set for every vehicle you own and keep
in a protected area, ie. desk drawer, tool box, safety deposit box, etc.

I own 8 vehicles and keys, as you can guess, became an issue a few years back.
Made spares and they are hidden but easily accessible.

Regards,

Rich

The cost was $20.00 for Saturday and Sunday. The must rent the college lots for

The trophy was called "Top 100". They judged the cars on body, paint and
interior using a point system. It was a good time but I think I might try the
State Fair next year, more to do during the day.Godspeed, Dan Solomon"It is a

idea if you started with a basket case like I did. I spoke with the guy but he
couldn't tell me who it bought it from, just that he picked it up at a show. I
did some searches on the web and found out that they are called Lenticular

Anyone on the list come across a vendor that sells these prints? If you have a

Many years ago I lost a good friend to cancer. As hard as it was I made it thru
the steps of his passing. He taught me a lot about cars and helped me build the
motor that was originally in the Chevelle I have now. Although he is gone, many
times I go out to turn a wrench or tinker with Chevelle and think fondly of him.

May God give you the strength you need, may he stand beside the family as they
struggle through this and may you also have some of those same fond memories as
time goes on.

Sorry to bring more news to this group but I have lost a dear friend this week.
His name was Louis William, 56, from Freeburg, IL and I was introduced to him
33 years ago when I needed help adjusting my clutch. He was an outstanding
mechanic and Chevelle enthusiast. He was the best mentor I ever ran into! We
went into partnership with a 1967 SS Chevelle, slowly converting it into an off
road drag car. I was brought up to speed on carbs, ignition, rearends,
enginesthe whole line! We raced for 10 years, finally sold the car after
much success on the strip.

He was also a sought after mechanic to the end, giving each customer more
satisfaction than he charged for. People brought their cars from out of state,
he was so dependable. I slept better knowing he worked on my elderly parents
vehicles and didn't overlook a thing!

Like I said, Louis loved Chevelles and helped me uncountable times during my 10
year restoration. We both love motorcycle riding, but his death happened when
a drunk driver turned in front of his 2007 Suzuki bike Tuesday causing a
collision. The chickensh*t driver took off but word is they caught him. I
will miss Louis dearly, as will his wife and 2 young sons. I hope I have
strength to go to his funeral.

Sorry for more bad personal news.

The triangular pad is brazed on by the manufacturer. If it is actually leaking

Sometimes the dipstick can leak if improperly installed or if it has a bad

Just received a Big Block Steering shaft that I purchased and it appears that
the seller made a product switch. I wouldn't be too concerned except that the

The bolt and slot are parallel with the flats of the shaft. Other pictures I
have seen they are at 90 degrees.

Got my copy at Wal-Mart. I’ll scan the cover and email it to you off-list.
Publisher is Source Interlink Media but you have to look on the inside to find
that data and wouldn’t help much trying to find it on the shelf. Cover shot
has a charcoal over green 67 and a yellow 71 convertible.

Like most magazines, the staff writers aren’t too bright sometimes and
proofreaders must be nonexistent. When discussing the yellow 71 SS454
convertible they state, “Chevrolet built just 5,089 LS5 SS454 Chevelle two-door
convertibles in 1971.” Uh, no – there were 5,089 Malibu convertibles built and
there are no real numbers on how many, of any model, were LS5 optioned. There
were only 9,502 LS5 options sold in 71 and I’d make it safe bet that over half
didn’t go into convertibles.

Same car; “The RPO Z15 Super sport package cost $357 and was offered on
Chevelle and Malibu models…” Uh, no – the Chevelle model didn’t come in a
convertible configuration and RPO Z15 was limited to Malibu sport coupes,
convertibles, and sedan pickups.

FWIW, Keith Anderson’s 70 SS Elky is in the same issue, facing page to Herb’s.

For some reason, Mr. Aldrich’s pages through the
chevelleengineer.home.comcast.net path aren’t showing up any longer. The fuel
gauge page is still at http://home.comcast.net/~chevelleengineer/fuelgage.htm.
For those interested, his page on speedometers and transmission gears is still
available at http://home.comcast.net/~chevelleengineer/speedo.htm. The home
(index.htm) page is missing and I don’t know of other specialty pages Mr.
Aldrich has.

Last I’d heard he was in ill health but that was over a year ago. Does anyone
have any updates on Mr. Aldrich or other individual page names (like speedo.htm
and fuelgage.htm) he had on his site?

So I’m assuming the second one has some kind of cap or plug that closes off the

They operate the same, only difference is capacity. I have the
first one & used it this AM for the first time in ages, worked fine for me.
With either of those, you will need a 60 or 80 gallon compressor.I just
upgraded my compressor last fall, today was the first time I used it with the
larger tank. I was using a 30 gallon sears compressor & I was continuosly
waiting for it to refill. The new (60 gal) was not near so annoying.

[Chevelle-list] Black Radiator Water?Hey All,A few months back I bought this 62
Cadillac. It had been sitting, not running for roughly 7 years. Just about two
weeks ago I got it driving. I rebuilt the carb and water pump on it, and did a
general tune it. It runs like new, and I've driven it about 100 miles or so
this past week. Well this weekend I was checking the fluids on it...I pulled
the radiator cap, and the water was black. I stuck my finger in there, and it
looked like I stuck my finger in black grease. The water was barely down. It
doesn't run hot, on the gauge, from C to H, its only about a quarter of the way
up. When I rebuild the water pump and all that, it wasn't black water. What
could cause that? The oil is nice and clean, no water in it. The engine doesn't
smoke. Could it be the old radiator hoses or something? The heater isn't hooked
up either. Any ideas? I figure I'll flush it out, drive it some, then see if it
happens again. Thanks,-Tim

Re: [Chevelle-list] welding aluminum - OY!!

2008-06-05 Thread Daniel Solomon
Jim,

Not a welder myself but am very involved with it at the plant. Aluminum needs
to be clean, very clean. Typically we etch the aluminum in tanks of
hydrofluoric acid but for large work or repairs where that isn't practical we
buy the acid in a bottle and brush it on. It should be available at any welding
supply house. It removes all of the oxidation from the pores of the metal. If
you use it, be very careful. If it was to get under your finger nails it can
actually attack the bone and is quite painful to treat. Read the caution label
carefully.
I agree with earlier posts that TIG is better and will do a neater job. Also
agree that you need a shielding gas although I think there may be some coated
wires available for small jobs.Godspeed, Dan Solomon"It is a mistake to allow

I purchased a restored dash on eBay and then installed a Dakota Digital VF3
Dash in my '71 Elky. I cannot personally recommend the DD dash as mine has
been a lot of trouble. I have replaced the control box three times and am
currently waiting on a replacement display unit. They are great at honoring
their lifetime warranty, but pulling the dash to replace parts can get old very
quickly. I believe Covan makes a gauge carrier that allows you to install
pretty much any aftermarket gauges. Of course the reproduction gauges are
available as well.

The restored dash was from a Monte Carlo and the holes had been filled with
epoxy. Grain was duplicated and it looks great. I have since experimented
with replicating the grain and it's pretty easy to do with a toothpick or an
awl while the epoxy is still soft. I bought another MC dash that had not been
restored a couple of years ago. It's in my warehouse and I don't really recall
the condition. I will take a look at it and try to price it fairly if you
think you might be interested. If I remember correctly, all of the bracing is
there.

As far as the swap, it's not very difficult. You do have to be careful to
support the dash while installing it, as it is kind of flimsy until properly
braced.

John, It is something I have wanted to do as well but it is a pricey conversion
and that has held me back. You will need the dash carrier, gauge cluster, under
dash wiring harness and vent balls. Also think there are one or two small steel
brackets that are unique to the SS dash but not sure. Its my understanding that
the aftermarket carrier has a fit issue at the glove box. Stay away from Monte
Carlo dashes as they have holes drilled through the face that are used to
attach the wood grain.70 gauge clusters are one year only if you want the

Folks,

How difficult would it be adapting an SS dash to a plain old 70 Malibu. I have
a line on a beautiful 'grandma' Malibu that looks like it is going to be the
baseline for the 70 Clone that I have been dreaming of building. The interior
is an almost perfect white with a bench. The only thing that I would like todo
to the interior is to adapt an M21 for the power glide and to replace the dash
with an SS dash. Is the dash just a plain drop in dash that will connect to the
stock wiring except for maybe the tach? Or will I need a whole new wiring
harness. The motor would either be a 'turn key' ZZ4, or a crate 502. BUt I am
leaning towards the ZZ4 as I can still get the AC to work with the pump on the
ZZ4.

Thanks in advanced for any advice,

Ok I have a question concerning the rear-end I just had put in my 66 chevelle.
If you remember I had wrote when I first joined the list that I had finally got
my car back after it had been in the shop for almost 4 mo and that the guy
didnt do half the work he was supposed to do and didnt order any of the items I
gave him money to buy well I have a posey rear end in her now (first time
having one) always had the standard factory type of rear end in her, and right
after I bought the car in 1982 I had it replaced with the exact same kind.
Couldnt tell any difference except the fact it did drive better, tighter
without the "play" I guess youd say? Well this rear end I have now is
really FUNKY! ... When I try to go backwards she acts like she just dont want
to go, barely even goes and the tires fight to turn and I have to push realy
hard on the gas, the tires wanna bounce. Any type of corner or any turn I make
even as simple as turning into my driveway or making a right hand turn down
another street the tires squell like Im doing a burn-out!! I can be going 5 -
10 - 15 miles an hour and it does that. The tires also wanna "bounce"I am not
happy with it do not like it at all but dont know if this is what it is
supposed to do or if this IDIOT did something WRONG with it Is that
normal!?? will it ever STOP and GO AWAY!?? when I complained to him about it he
tried to say that is normal for the type of rear end he put in, that its tight
and new and needs to be worn in and loosen upok its been a MONTH and I
drive my car every day and I see NO CHANGE!!?? please tell me it is normal and
will go away!!! I already am in process of taking this jerk to court because
of tall the work he DIDNT do and the MONEY he kept for parts NOT ordered and
put in my car!!

Anybody need some parts? Remember the guy who bought 21 trailers full of GM
parts? He's now selling.
Here is a link to the original story. When you get to the site, on the left is

Muscle CarsMajor stash of muscle-era Chevrolet artifacts to cross the block

A lifetime supply of muscle-era Chevy parts and a few cars will cross the block
May 9-10.

photo courtesy Bud Ward’s Auction CompanyOn May 9-10, Bud Ward’s Auction
Company will be auctioning off a huge collection of Chevrolet muscle-era
high-performance parts as well as five cars, including two 1970 LS-6 Chevelles
and a 1972 Z/28.
The parts stash, which had been stored along with 10 desirable Chevrolet cars
in 21 sealed box-van trailers, reportedly includes multiple complete Chevrolet
high-performance big-block engines, heads, transmissions, fuel-injection
systems, intake and exhaust manifolds, wheels and more. The inventory is made
up of a mix of used as well as NOS Chevrolet and Corvette parts.
The collection was unearthed in De Pere, Wisconsin, when the 21 tractor
trailers were purchased from the widow of Donald Schlag, the man who collected
all of the coveted Chevrolet artifacts over the course of his lifetime and
stashed them away with apparently no intention of using or selling them. Schlag
is said to have “had a deep love of all things high-performance and Chevrolet
which led him to collect parts while working for his father at a John Deere
Dealership.”
Scott Milestone, the current owner, moved all parts and five cars from
Wisconsin to Rockville, Maryland, and has since decided to offer this find to
the public. The preview of rare parts will take place on May 7-8 in Rockville,
and the auction will take place at High Point Farm in Clarksburg, Maryland.
For more information about this auction, to register to bid, to receive a color
catalog, or to consign a car, please call Bud Ward at 888-860-9664, or Michelle

You can also pickup a plastic set at the local auto parts store. Got one a few
months ago for 3 bucks. Comes with an assortment of plastic nipples, a clip to

Re: [Chevelle-list] master cylinder bench bleeding
I always take extra line, screw them into the master cylinder, then bend them
up and into the reservoir, so that the ends of these lines are submerged in the
reservoir. Fill up the master cylinder with fluid, making sure the ends of the
lines are submerged. Put the master cylinder in a vise, and push on the piston
part of it with a screwdriver. You'll see bubbles come out from the
lines...keep going and going and going and going(haha) untill no more air comes
out. You could do this on the car also...which is what I did. That way you can
just step on the brake pedal. But then you'd need somebody else to tell you
when the bubbles stop.

Pretty easy to do really. If you have any more questions just ask.

This is off topic but hoping someone out there can help. We have a 95 GMC
Suburban with a 454. It hasn't been heating up in the mornings so I decided to
replace the thermostat today. The coolant I drained out was a dark grey color
and there was some sludge in the radiator cap. I also found about an inch or
two of dark grey sludge in the bottom of the overflow tank. Scraped the
majority of it out and found it to be almost like a dense clay. Filled a Ziploc
bag with the stuff. It is water soluble because I was able to wash out the
remainder with hot water. Any ideas? I have never used any stop leak.Godspeed,

  A Different Christmas Poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.
The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

'What are you doing?' I asked without fear,
'Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!'
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said 'Its really all right,

I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night.'

'It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,

I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,'
Then he sighed, 'That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers.'

My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..

Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.'
'So go back inside,' he said, 'harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right.'

'But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
'Give you money,' I asked, 'or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son.'

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
'Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.

For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us.'

PLEASE, Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people
as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our
U.S. service men and women for our being able to celebrate these

2007-11-05 Thread Daniel Solomon
I installed one on my car during the restoration process that went bad before I
even had a chance to drive the car. It really threw me because you expect a new
part to work. I would try a different brand. Maybe one of the companies out
there is doing a better rebuild job than the rest.
Make sure you bench bleed the MC before you install it.

Looking for some advice/help regarding the master cylinder on my
Chevelle. I've had the car for three years now and have gone thru 3
master cylinders in that time. The original one lasted about a month
after I bought the car. The replacement one lasted about 10 months. The
replacement for the replacement lasted about a year and half. It is a
little nerve wracking taking the car out for a drive on a Sunday and
wondering if the brakes will fail!! Any advice will be greatly
  appreciated.

[Chevelle-list] Cowl Induction Assembly Woes

2007-10-27 Thread Daniel Solomon
Having a heck of a time installing the Cowl Induction components in my 70.The
door is in. I have the frame and solenoid mounted to the hood (the one that has
the plastic flapper in it). It is an original GM piece. Next I attempted to
install the bracket that mounts the actuator assembly (the pod). It also is an
original GM part. Down where the two meet there isn't enough room for both
parts. If I lay the actuator bracket on top of the frame then the plastic door
will not open.I can install the frame or I can install the actuator support but
not both. That is unless I do some cutting to one of the parts. It's a Goodmark
hood. Is it the hood or something I am doing wrong? Anyone had similar
problems? I hope I explained my dilemma but can send pictures if some one here
has been down this road.Godspeed, Dan Solomon"It is a mistake to allow any

Re: [Chevelle-list] Cowl Hood Windshield Wiper Nozzles

2007-10-27 Thread Daniel Solomon
That is correct. The cowl hood uses different nozzles than the flat hood. I
installed mine the only way I could see that they could possibly fit but I
didn't use any reliable documentation to back up my decision. If you want pics
of what I did let me know.Godspeed, Dan Solomon"It is a mistake to allow any

Any answer yet? I spent some time this AM looking thru the 72

The assembly manual page (1A2D) is reproduced very poorly & I can't tell
exactly how they are mounting the nozzles.

I did go look at my cowl hood and can tell you where I mounted them several
years ago. I don't remember what rational or info I used, but this what I
did.

Passenger side, there is a "bubble" in the cowl screen that seemed to be
the location. The nozzle is mounted about 3 inches inboard of the rise for the
hood bubble. And stix out thru the screen bubble.
Driver side - Mounted just barely outboard of the beginning of the rise for
the hood bubble.

FYI - If you use the cowl screen, be very careful about which screws you use to
mount it. I bought a repro screen & screws. The screws were a hair too long.
After I mounted the screen I had 5 or 6 little dimples sticking up at the
back of the "good" side of the hood. Paintless dent repair got them out, but
it was aggravating.

Going back to the nnozzles, I don't remember if I used predrilled holes or not.
 Hope this helps.

The 454 is an externally balance engine. The weight on the flywheel

It will come together. Mine took 11 years. I kind of stalled at the rolling
chassis. The problem was finding someone who was willing to do the body and

Take care of the kids. That's the most important thing. The Chevelle will
always be around but they won't. Enjoy every day that you have with them. Raise
them right. Give them plenty of hugs and someday, when you look back, you'll be
glad you did.

Re: [Chevelle-list] OT: Microsoft Publisher 2007

2007-10-02 Thread Daniel Solomon
I bought Microsoft Expression Web but had a tough time learning the program.
Made a nice site once I got the hang of it.
I would take Karl's advice unless the cost is prohibitive. I picked up a
Student copy of Expression Web for under a $100 bucks.

  Karl,

Well thats good to know, especially coming from a professional web site
designer. In about a month I'll have some money saved up from my buisness...Is
DreamWeaver the best web site designer? Or at least one that's pretty good. I'm
fairly good with computers, and I know that websites are all HTML based. I've
played with HTML a very very small amount, but that's it. The publisher just
seemed pretty easy to use and would do what I wanted it to do(for now). I
bought my domain on GoDaddy.com, and used thier little web site builder. It was
absolutely horrible...That's why I was looking into publisher.

As someone who makes web sites professionally, I can tell you that without a
shadow of a doubt, Microsoft Publisher is absolutely the last thing I would use
to create an HTML document. The markup it creates is hideous and everytime I
see or hear about an HTML document created with Publisher, I want to gouge my
eyes out.

I write everything in Notepad, but I understand not everyone has the code-fu
I have. If you're going to buy something, buy Dreamweaver. As web tools go,
these tools are only as good as the person using them, but in the hands of a
layperson, Dreamweaver is far less likely to create as much of a mess than most
anything else.

I know this is way off topic, but

I have a need to confirm that MS Publisher 2007 will or will not properly
convert to .html.
Would anyone have MS Publisher 2007 that would allow me to send them a .pub
file to convert, then send it back to me as .html in a .zip file?
If it works out, I'll just buy Publisher, but don't want to spend the money
only to find it doesn't convert any better than the 2003 version that I already
have.
And the 2007 trial version doesn't let me publish as .html.

Thanks,

Mike,

How will I know if the rod and the M/C match?
I think I will try bench bleeding the M/C tonight. The entire system was

A couple of questions. There are two types of masters. One for the long push
rod and one for the short. If your booster has the short rod and your M/C is a
long style you are not stroking the M/C. Also, did you bench bleed the M/C?
This is necessary to get good pedal. One more, there should be two different
mounting locations(holes) in the brake pedal arm for the clevis to attach to.
The upper is for manual brakes and the lower for power.

My first thought was that the Master Cylinder was bad. Even though it is
new, it could be. Or maybe you need to adjust the plunger/pedal? It has been
way too long for me, but I had the opposite problem of the brakes applying
themselves after a while until the wheels locked. That was from the
adjustement bein off the other direction. Too tight and the brakes are always
on! Maybe too loose and you get lots of travel and no pressure.

Is the master the right one for the other parts? You say you might put
the booster back on the firewall, so does this mean the master is a non-power
master? I'm not sure what would happen if you had a power master with no
booster, but I think it would be a problem to add a booster to a manual master
cylinder. If things are mismatched here, maybe that is why you get no power
from your braking?

4 Wheel Drum Brakes - All pads and hardware are brand new
4 New Brake Cylinders
New Drum Brake Master Cylinder
Used GM Power Booster
Original Proportioning Valve
All New Lines
Silicone Brake Fluid

I adjusted all of the brakes but it did not help. Bled them again but
did not find any air in the lines. Wondering if I should ditch the booster and

This may sound really dumb, but this happened to me this year. I went from a
manual 4 drum system to a power disk braking system. I got everything all
hooked up, but I wasn't impressed with the stopping power. I started to hear a
leak from my booster after a few months, so I ordered a new one. Well I
removed the master cylinder and realized my friend who hooked up the booster
and master didn't put in the connecting rod between then. So I had a huge air
leak through that area and I had no physical connection between the booster and
the master. I doubt anyone else in the world could be that dumb, but I like to
share my dumb stories. PS~I drove my car like that for 5 months before I fixed
the problem. Now the car actually stops. Good luck. I'd guess it is a
bleeding issue. I also had a problem while bleeding that one fitting wasn't
real tight on the rear T and it kept letting air slowing back into the system
while bleeding.

[Chevelle-list] The Chevelle is finally coming together

2007-09-13 Thread Daniel Solomon
The 70 Chevelle is finally coming together. Its been at least 8 years since I
started and yesterday it was in the paint booth. Should be getting its stripes
today. I think the smile on my face is permanent now.

Couple things you might be able to help me with...

1. Bagged and tagged most everything but can't locate the front bumper bolts. I
picked up the 4 chrome bolts for the face of the bumper but can't find the four
bolts along the bottom. Anyone know size and length of the bolts and the
type/number of washers used from the factory?

2. Need a vent cable. Looking for the one with the offset on the end of the
wire that opens and closes the upper vents. When I installed the clip on one of
mine I broke the retaining flange. Any condition will be fine as long as its
not broken.
I will update the web site when it comes home.

Re: [Chevelle-list] What oil to use.

2007-09-09 Thread Daniel Solomon
There was a good article on this in June 07's Hot Rod magazine. As of 2006
Shell Rotella T oils still had the ZDDP but there are plans to phase it out of
this as well.
Best news in the article was that Quaker State's line of Q Racing synthetic
oils are formulated with all the necessary anti friction additives to keep our
engines alive. We just have to find out where they sell it.
Another option was to add a 4 oz bottle of GM camshaft and lifter pre-lube with
each oil change of API SM/GF-4 street oil. The GM part number is 12345501. It
will put back in the additives to save our flat tappets.Dan Solomon

OIL IS KILLING OUR CARS!By: Keith Ansell, Foreign Parts Positively,
Inc.About a year ago I read about the reduction of zinc dithiophosphate (ZDDP)
in the oils supplied with API approval that could affect sliding and high
pressure (EP) friction in our cars. The reduction of these chemicals in
supplied oil was based on the fact that zinc, manganese and/or phosphates
reduce the effectiveness and eventually damage catalytic converters and
introduce minute amounts of pollutants into our atmosphere.A month or so ago I
had a member of the Columbia Gorge MG Club bring a totally failed camshaft and
lifters back to me that had only 900 miles on them!! I immediately contacted
the camshaft regrinder and asked how this could happen. They were well aware of
this problem as they were starting to have many failures of this type. In the
past, the lack of a molybdenum disulfide camshaft assembly lubricant, at
assembly, was about the only thing that could create this type of problem. My
customer has assembled many engines and had lubricated the camshaft properly
and followed correct break in procedures. This got me on the phone to Delta
Camshaft, one of our major suppliers. Then the bad news came out: It’s today’s
“modern” API (American Petroleum Industry) approved oils that are killing our
engines.Next call: To another major camshaft supplier, both stock and
performance (Crane). They now have an additive for whatever oil you are using
during break-in so that the camshaft and lifters won’t fail in an unreasonably
short period of time. They also suggest using a diesel rated oil on flat tappet
engines.Next call: To a racing oil manufacturer that we use for the race cars
(Redline). Their response: “We are well aware of the problem and we still use
the correct amounts of those additives in our products”. They continued to tell
me they are not producing API approved oils so they don’t have to test and
comply. Their oils were NOT the “new, improved and approved” ones that destroy
flat tappet engines! “We just build the best lubricants possible”. Sounds
stupid, doesn’t it, New-Approved but inferior products, but it seems to be true
for our cars. To top this off: Our representative from a major supplier of
performance and street engine parts (EPWI) stopped by to “warn us” of the
problem of the NEW oils on flat tappet engines. This was a call that the
representative was making only because of this problem to warn their engine
builders! “The reduction of the zinc, manganese and phosphates are causing very
early destruction of cams and followers”. They are recommending that, for now
at least, there must be a proper oil additive putin the first oil used on new
engines, beyond the liberal use of molydisulfide assembly lube. They have been
told that the first oil is the time the additives are needed but remain
skeptical that the first change is all that is necessary. Their statement: Use
diesel rated oils such as Delo or Rotella that are usually available at auto
stores and gas stations. This problem is BIG! American Engine Rebuilder's
Association (AERA) Bulletin #TB2333 directly addresses this problem. I had a
short discussion with their engineer and he agreed with all that I had been
finding.OIL IS KILLING OUR CARS!Next phone call was to a retired engineer
from Clevite, a major bearing and component manufacturer. First surprise was
that he restored older British Motor bikes. The second surprise was that he was
“VERY” aware of this problem because many of the old bikes had rectangular
tappets that couldn’t rotate and are having a very large problem with the new
oils. He has written an article for the British Bike community that verify all
the “bad news” we have been finding. Comp Cams put out “#225 Tech Bulletin:
Flat Tappet Camshafts”. They have both an assembly lube and an oil additive.
The telling sentence in the bulletin was “While this additive was originally
developed specifi

I have always found the quality of their products to be top notch and have

There are a lot of vendors out there who specialize in inferior parts at cheap

meet a higher standard. Thanks,Dan Solomon For those out there that won't stand

I was wondering what type of carb most list members were running...I am
thinking of switching over to an Edelbrock on my 327...The Holley 600 I have on
there..(almost brand new) i'm finding I am constantly trying to get it to run
better and just can't seem to get it right...Edelbrocks I am told aren't as
fussy and are alot easier to work with and set...You know...Set it and forget

Just pulled it out and it is actually has two bosses in it, the larger of the

Re: [Chevelle-list] Value of a 454?

Well I made a deal with the guy and bought the engine. The block is a 361959
date code J 13 77 and the heads are 336781's with 78 date codes. The heads have
new springs and valves. It has flat top pistons and a mild cam. There is no
step at the top of the cylinders and it is clean throughout. Came with a
Edlebrock Aluminum intake and a Rochester carb. From the numbers it looks like
a light truck engine. Since its a fresh build I think I can safely beef it up a
bit. Any suggestions on how to proceed? Anything else I should look for when
evaluating my purchase?

Check your grounds. Had a similar problem when I put mine together. Make sure
that there is no paint where the dash harness connects to the dash frame and
also make sure that the dash frame is fee of paint where it mounts to the body.
If your not sure, try jumping the harness ground to bare metal on the frame.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Favorite Parts Catalog

2006-08-21 Thread Daniel Solomon

Dennis,

I am on the east coast and think that Classic Muscle is top notch. Their catalog is filled with exploded views so you can identify exactly what you need, they stock a lot of NOS parts listed under the original GM part numbers and if out of stock will offer reproductions. In some cases they will offer two grades of reproduction parts, typically made in USA and import for us who want to keep our Chevelle all American. The catalogs are available on the web for download at www.oldmusclecars.com . Every time I have called the salesperson who takes the order will let me know if it is in stock and when it will ship. I bet 20% of my car came from them. I can't say enough good things about'em.

I have also had great success with NPD and Ground Up. Both sell quality products and deliver when they say they will. I too have had bad experiences with OPG and will not use them again.

2006-07-26 Thread Daniel Solomon

I agree with Karl. For the limited amount you are going to use it, go for price. I picked up mine at Harbor Freight and it has installed at least a half dozen engines. The key to long life it to keep the hydraulic cylinder closed when not in use. If you allow the piston to rust or get nicked it will shorten the life of the seals and cause leak down.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Steering column cover Question

2006-07-10 Thread Daniel Solomon

Eddie,

The cover under the column is the same on the SS and the Malibu as long as its not an AC car. If you have AC there is an additional vent attached.
For reference auction 230005491166 is correct. The other is not from a 70-72.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Tranmission

2006-06-30 Thread Daniel Solomon

Eddie,

You should put it back on. Unless you have a floor shifter and drive by shifting manually thru the gears you will appreciate the automatic drop into lower gears when you stomp it to the floor. You will need to get the cable and you must still have the bracket on the engine and the ball on the carb to attach the cable. The bracket will be mounted towards the rear of the engine, usually on the intake and have a square cutout in it. The brackets can be found both at swap meets and in reproduction. The ball is available as aftermarket. The cable is held in at the trans with a single screw.
I just went thru the same thing myself except that I was the one who cut the cable and removed the brackets 20 plus years ago.
If you need a source for the ball, let me know.Dan Solomon http://www.freewebs.com/chevelles1970/
