[Chevelle-List] Vent Window Gasket
I'm about to replace the vent window gaskets in my el camino. The gaskets have been sitting a while. They have a white film on them that I can't get off. I've tried dish soap & simple green. Anyone have a suggestion on a cleaner? I'd like them black before I install them. I thought that it was just a powder protectant. rick schaefer 72 El Camino http://members.home.net/jimmy4/rick1972elky.html TPI 350-700r4 http://chevelles.com/showroom/ricks%20motor%20-L Team Chevelle # 0038 ACES #0140 - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [Chevelle-List] 400 Engines
tom I'm not gonna bet the farm, and heavens knows at my age I can't be sure about much of anything. But it seems that over the years its been discussed at Chevelle tech and the consensus was that the 400 small block never made it to a chevelle - at least thru 72. I checked the engine codes for 69-72 at the Index of Years at www.chevelles.com and couldn't find anything for the 400. Also Dan Carrs 68-72 Production poster does not show a 400 except for the 70 Monte Carlo. I agree with everything else you are saying. Also in searching the archive at TC I found that there was a 4 bbl 400 in the impala. I posted a question about this at Chevelle Tech, I can be convinced so we'll see. rick On Sat, 29 Jun 2002 22:52:43 EDT [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: i am going to have to disagree with the fact that small block 400 did not come in Chevelles. i have seen several that have. They were available in 70-73 Chevelles. The casting number is 3951511, the same engine was also in 75-80 trucks. This is were GM got a little goofy in the 1971 model year. The 396 name was kept but the engine displaced 402 cid. There were 2 400 engines in 1970, one small block, one big block. The small block was only available in the 2 bbl carb setup. the 400 big block was a 4 bbl engine. the 400 big block was actually a 396/402 but was "Marketed" as a 400 4 bbl engine for some reason and it was only in trucks from what i understand.Tom

The malibu 400 was big block. Check this page from http://links.chevelles.net/links http://home.netcom.com/~radiojoe/Malibu.html I have heard that ALL 400 s/b came from the factory with a 2 bbl carb. Re: [Chevelle-List] Gas Tank and Brakes ?
I don't think that mounting the M/C on the firewall will get a good bleed. In its mounted position, the cylinder is not level. Air will be trapped in the nose high end. You won't be able to get all of the air out. The M/C needs to be mounted in a vise so it is level and then bled as Tom explained. In my limited experience, the couple of MC's that I have done included instructions for bench bleed. One even included the hoses/tubes. BTW - a parts stores will have the hoses for a couple of dollars if not included. rick On Thu, 16 May 2002 23:39:46 EDT [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: In a message dated 5/16/2002 11:32:23 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Can someone explain bench bleeding to me? I have been cleaning and detailing the undercarriage as much as I can, and replacing what I need to, with the engine removed. The only bad part on my 69 SS body is the trunk area, and it's not that bad. I have some pin holes in the far rear, near tail lights, of the floor pan. I can't afford right now to replace it. I was wonder however, that it would be great to at least coat under the rear floor with some POR-15 to help it along. I already did the interior area. My questions are how hard is it, for a first timer, to remove the gas tank to coat this area? That is involved? I also have a leak where the Master Cylinder and booster connect. I guess the Master Cylinder is bad. I just purchased a rebuilt one. If I disconnect the break lines and replace the Master Cylinder, can I get by without bleeding the brake lines? Craig

Thought I would also mention an unusual problem solved in the hope that a mistake is avoided in the future for others. When my 402 was rebuilt, the intake was hot tanked and, in preparation for this, the heat shield removed. When the shield was re-installed, whoever drilled and tapped the rivet holes to accept screws drilled through on one of the holes. Ordinarily, this is of no consequence but, when they tried to reinstall the shield, the holes were not exactly lined up and they put only two of the four screws in. Not even this is an overly big deal, but as luck would have it, one of the missing screws was the one that had been drilled through. Engine vacuum when the motor was run sucked oil up from the crankcase resulting is a whole bunch of oil smoke. It was a perplexing problem because it only smoked when hot. The natural thought is cracked ring or valve seals, etc. But my mechanic found it because cylinders 1 and 7 and 4 and 6 were very wet with oil while the others looked almost (but not quite) normal. Dual plane manifolds feed "banks" of cylinders (1,7,4,6 and 2,8,3,5). So there you have it - re-installed the shield by enlarging the screw holes to mate to the tapped holes, plugged the holes with a dose of RTV and screws. Engine now runs flawlessly. Craig

Re: [Chevelle-List] blazer motor
Go for it. Just be aware that its "different" One piece rear seal - you'll need appropriate flex plate. Center bolt valve covers ( I think). Roller Cam - maybe - but an improvement over flat tappet. If you are rebuilding it anyway, you can get the comp ratio/cam of your choice. rick On Mon, 6 May 2002 21:53:34 EDT [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Howdy, Firts of all, thanks for the help with the E-Brake cable thing. The guy, ( a friend of a friend) said it ran "about a year ago", then he picked up a new truck, and it sat outside till now. While I realize that this motor really isnt the best choice (cam, compression ratio, etc..),would it be worth the time, effort, and money to use this to replace the 6 cyl currently residing in my engine compartment? Will it mate to the Powerglide and be streetable? There are a lot of unforseen variables, huh? What'd y'all tink? Take it easy Dan McIntosh 65 Malibu
Re: [Chevelle-List] polishing chrome bumpers
I agree with dwaine. It is the prep work that determines the smoothness of the chrome. rick On Mon, 6 May 2002 15:14:18 EDT [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: John, I am not in the this field of expertise or chrome plating profession. What I have heard from others and some folks doing this type of work it start from the beginning. Beginning as in the all 3 metallic layers applied must be prepped sanded polished thoroughly before the next step or layer is applied. If all the layers or steps not thoroughly polished it then and grinding marks, etc., will come through on the next step of the chrome finish process. I think that is the main difference in the bumpers when it comes done to show quality vs non show quality chrome. Tom - a great idea, but definitely too far for me to travel and probably most list members. Many of the list members are planning to attend the ACES Chevelabration in Nashville (first weekend of June) or the ACES Midwest Regional (Kansas City - mid August) or the LGCA Midwest meet in Tulsa in late September. These are all great family events. I'm planning on either/both of the later shows. Maybe we can all meet at one of these. BUT - do you have a local club/charity that you can work with to do a show. Re: [Chevelle-List] Heater core?
Absolutely sounds like a heater core. I'd disconnect the hoses on the engine side so as not to do any damage til you get it fixed. Check the passenger side floor/carpet for anti freeze and get it dried out. The core is available from any parts store for reasonable ($30.00??) money. You need to work from both sides of the firewall to do the swap- awkward but not too difficult. You may need to loosen/drop the passenger side inner fender well to get at one of the bolts holding the heater core in place. Sealing the heater box - replacing the gaskets- sealers in the plastic box hanging inside the passenger compartment. Or sealing the outer heater "suitcase" to the firewall. I did a core swap many years ago and don't think that you need to drop the heater box. But also an A/C and non A/C car may be different. Re: [Chevelle-List] Chevelle Love
Lots of great input on this. What it comes down to is that we are all in the hobby for what it brings to number one - ME!Some like a modified car (dale); for some it MUST be a numbers matching 100% accurate restoration (john - tom??). For me its got to be practical (???). I do not live in your shoes, and you do not live in mine. I can/should not tell you what is right (for you) and you can/should not tell me what is right (for me). That is one of the things making this list so addicting - diversity.BUT what we all agree on is a love for the 1964 - 1972 ( plus a few folks who love the later years[kelly]) A-Body produced by the Chevrolet Division of General Motors. rick - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [Chevelle-List] adjusting shocks?
There should already be a line connected. As I recall, air shocks need a certain minimum (5 lbs??) at all times. If you bought the car without a line, I'd almost bet that one side or the other will not hold air. Also air shocks are not the best way to raise ride height. Re: [Chevelle-List] New Chevelle Owner
Congratulations on a dream come true. You'll find that many of the mechanical parts for your chevelle are still available from most parts stores. The heater core is readily available. Its a pain to swap, but doable if you take your time. There are several web sites available to help with the gauge problem. You can go here: http://links.chevelles.net/links/WorkShop/General_Info/ and then page down to the Fuel Gauge Link. Or try here: http://www.chevelles.com/techref/ There is a gauge page down in the miscellaneous area. You will need a volt/ohm meter. You can buy a good one for less than $30.00 at Radio Shack or a cheapy (less than $10.00) from harbor freight. A meter will be very useful . rick schaefer 72 El Camino http://members.home.net/jimmy4/rick1972elky.html TPI 350-700r4 http://chevelles.com/showroom/ricks%20motor%20-L Team Chevelle # 0038 ACES #0140 On Fri, 26 Apr 2002 03:16:08 EDT [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > Just bought dream car, 1970 Chevelle SS 396. Re: [Chevelle-List] car sits lower on one side
May be bad body bushings (collapsed) or the springs may not be seated. If I had to venture a guess I'd say that the 30 year old rubber bushings have died of old age. Re: [Chevelle-List] new carpet
I've heard that putting the carpet in the sun to warm will help it fit to the contours a bit easier. Maybe using a blow drier can make it more flexible. Re: [Chevelle-List] Disc brake question
Calipers - many GM use similar bolt patterns, but the Throat may be wider. Apparently trucks use a fatter disc than cars - or so I've gathered from a brake discussion at chevelle tech. Proportioning valve - vehicle weight distribution is criteria for use. A van is quite a bit different than a coupe, It might work on elky or wagon, but I doubt it would be 'right" for coupe. Master Cylinder - cheap enough if you buy a rebuilt unit (I know some have problems) - why mess with the one from the van? I'll withhold a judgement til i see it in person. I like some of the shoebox styling cues, but overall it doesn't come together for me. Hopefully it will appeal if I see it in person. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I haven't followed all the msgs closely , but IF you are going with the 400 - i believe that they have an electric kickdown system - hadn't seen any mention of that.IF you are going with a 700 - they have electric lockup for the torque converter. I've got links that may help with the wiring. 400 & 700 are close to the same length. If you need to shorten drive shaft for one, the other will need it too. A 700 can withstand a mild big block on the street, especially a mostly cruiser only.If you want to use tires that will hook you up, the 700 will not last too long unless its built by a pro. (ssnake-oyl.com & krebsclassic.com) The mount bolt holes are in the side of the drive shaft tunnel. Down fairly low. but in line with the holes for the male portion. If you have carpet installed, you can see them from underneath. Just stick a piece of wire up thru the hole/carpet to find the location on the inside. AS i recall, the lap belt and shoulder belt look the same. Re: [Chevelle-List] 1964 Malibu SS
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List 4 Speed will be on the floor. If the only difference is the tranny, and the price is reasonable I'd grab it. When you start looking for a specific 35 year old car, produced in limited numbers, you make your search much more difficult.A tranny conversion is not too difficult and much easier than significant body work. Don't know if its been mentioned, but the first thing to look for in a project is a solid body (or as solid as you can find/afford). Body work is much more expensive, time consuming,, and frustrating than the mechanical stuff. Chevy motors/trannys are cheap in the grand scheme of things. Also parts peculiar to the 64 will be difficult to find. A guy here in town, has been looking for the chrome piece that goes around the top well of his 64 convert. Last I heard he hasn't had any success in over a year of looking. If you get a project, you want as many original pieces as you can find. Last thing this AM. I assume, but don't know that you found this list thru Team Chevelle www.chevelles.com . Checkout EVERY page linked off that front page. There are so many resources available on line.Get smart on the 64 so you end up with the car that you want. Re: [Chevelle-List] Over center adjustment
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List sean The nut is loosened first, then the inner screw. Early boxes have a screwdriver slot, it was later when they went to an allen socket. Does not indicate a quick ratio.Check the Steering Gear Adjustment link here: http://links.chevelles.net/links/WorkShop/Brakes_Suspension/ DO NOT over tighten it. Its easy to adjust, and just as easy to overtighten. rick On Mon, 11 Mar 2002 04:33:30 + "Sean Martinez" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > > Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List > > > Does anyone know how to adjust the over-center adjustment on the > power > steering box? do you loosen the nut then tighten the allen? Re: [Chevelle-List] questions on b-body cars
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I went with the GW upper arms and bushings. Also used their bushings in my lower arms. Spindles from 86 Caprice wagon (12") , calipers from 75/6 camaro. Hoses too. I agonized over which calipers to use. I didn't know if there were 12" specific calipers. NO! GM made very small changes in calipers over the years. They mount the same, The most significant change, was that I believe (but am still not 1000% sure) that they changed the hose threads to a metric thread about 78.I also had a difficult time with hoses. I'd heard that 72 grand prix hoses are slightly longer, but when I checked part #'s at www.advanceautoparts.com they were the same as for my 72 elky originals. The camaro hoses are a bit longer, but they are tight at full extension. rick On Thu, 14 Mar 2002 01:57:18 EST [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > > Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List > > > Did you reuse your stock upper control arms or did you use the after > market > ones? > > - > To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html > To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [Chevelle-List] undercoat ????
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List craig I've got no idea if it was the right thing, but I undercoated them with a modern undercoat. I used the rubberized spray bomb. It goes on easily and dries hard and fast. I would not use the POR alone. At least for me, it was too shiny. I topcoated it with Eastwood chassis black (while still tacky) .The pOR is great and dries hard & durable, it just didn't look right to me. rick schaefer 72 El Camino http://members.home.net/jimmy4/rick1972elky.html TPI 350-700r4 http://chevelles.com/showroom/ricks%20motor%20-L Team Chevelle # 0038 ACES #0140 On Mon, 11 Mar 2002 06:06:24 -0500 "Craig & Cerena Robertson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > After removing my inner fender wells I found that my fenders are in > great shape, no rust. Re: [Chevelle-List] questions on b-body cars
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I'm pretty sure that you can, but you must use a matching rotor (11"). The only question is the ball joint that was used in 80, but I'm almost positive that TA used the same taper BJ as a b-body.Your best bet, is call global west & talk with Doug. Or hotchkis if you want to use theirs. I had a couple of questions when I installed his system and doug went out of the way to make sure that I understood everything. What is your ultimate goal? I know of someone who was successful in swapping to tall spindles without using either GW or hotchkis control arms.He has a web site detailing everything. rick On Sun, 10 Mar 2002 01:48:57 EST [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > > Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List > > > So, can I use the WS6 spindles of a I think 79 or 80 TA? > Would this be considerred the same type of spindle you mentioned > earlier in > the topic?
