Re: [Chevelle-list] alternator charging
Lorne, Do you have a wiring diagram? If not, I have one on PDF I can Email you. Take off the wire that comes from the battery and goes to the junction block. Test again, if you still have the problem, then it's on the way to the starter and coil. If not, then reattach the wires that go to the horn and check further down the line. There is a huge connection of wires in the line that go to different points on the car. This joint may also be a problem. Since the car is old, also check wires someone may have put through the firewall that do not have grommets as they may be grounding out. Hope any of this helps. Re: [Chevelle-list] alternator charging
Lorne, so what I think we can say for sure is that the Horn relay is the center point for all circuit power to the fuse block. There are several connections on the two large tabs of the horn relay. Disconnect all connections except the one to the battery. Check for drain. Re-connect those connections one-at-a-time and see if the leakage occurs again. Then follow it to the next point which is the fuse block. That fuse block has two pieces and if old and fragile. My 67 OEM was in bad shape with corroded terminals both inside the car and on the firewall side. If you break something, it will be hard to repair but you have to keep searching. The problem could be inside this clam shell fuse block. regards mike --- On Wed, 7/23/08, Peebles, Lorne (Services) <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > From: Peebles, Lorne (Services) <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] alternator charging > To: "The Chevelle Mailing List" > Date: Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 10:33 AM > I had the wire harness opened up from battery over to horn > relay area > all the way across the rad support. I had the wire harness opened up from battery over to horn relay area all the way across the rad support. Found some rough splices and repaired with proper connectors. Had the alternator removed from car and tested OK, I still have a drain on battery. I make my measurement from positive battery cable to ground with battery and alternator removed from car and still have 20 Ohms resistance.. With battery in and all hooked up I test for voltage and watch it drop off rapidly like a countdown. This is with the ignition off and key removed. Agree that a shorted diode in the alternator could cause both problems. Also where are you measuring to get the 20 ohms? Re: [Chevelle-list] Alternator Mounting
I’d almost bet it would put the alternator fan pulley too far out from the block to align with the water pump pulley. The two ‘standoffs’ as Moroso calls them that space the alternator away from the head and block are 5” and 3” respectively. Re: [Chevelle-list] Alternator Mounting
Not the best looking in my opinion but Alan Grove components makes brackets for a short pump big block that mounts the alternator on the passenger side. Check http://www.alangrovecomponents.com/B.B.Short_Pump.htm One mounts the alternator pretty high and may not fit under the hood and one is a ‘low profile’ that mounts the alternator about mid-carb height. They are priced online at $70 and $85 respectively. If neither of those fits the bill, I have some ideas on how you could build your own very similar to this: http://dalesplace.com/misc/march/alt2.jpg http://dalesplace.com/misc/march/alt5.jpg Take some work and probably cost about the same as the ones above but it’d be different. Re: [Chevelle-list] Alternator Question
Hello:you can get a alternator built to any specs, with the load that you had in the rain, actually a 63 amp it should have been okay, take the alternator and get it tested for correct operation, also make shure the belt was tight,if you can put a avr or a similiar tested on the car,to see if the alternator was actually putting out as close as possible to 63 amps would be a good test to see if the alternator is okay internally. - Original Message - From: Dave Benjamin To: chevelle-list@chevelles.net Sent: Wednesday, August 02, 2006 9:42 AM Subject: [Chevelle-list] Alternator Question I was wondering what size of Alternator I should be using on my 1968 Beaumont (350/350). Re: [Chevelle-list] Alternator Question
Hi Dave, I have a 1968 Chevelle SS 396 that I installed a One-wire Alternator from Powermaster on 06-20-2002. Part number 8002. the Output at Idle is with a stock pulley at 2400 rpm was 75 amps, and at hwy speeds of 6000 Dyno Rpm was 102 amps. I just had to run a wire directly to the battery. I didn't mess with running it through the starter etc. I also had to modify my Voltage Reg to keep the battery light from staying on all the time. The only thing I run off this is an MSD box, radio lights etc. No stereo or other add ons. Terry S. Re: [Chevelle-list] Alternator Question
Personally with the three things going at once I wouldn’t worry about the volts dropping to 12 as long as it comes back up during ‘normal’ operations. A 63 amp unit should be enough if it’s in good working order. If you also had a high-end stereo then a 100-130 amp wouldn’t be out of line IMO. Brian From: "Dean Vandergriff" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: The Chevelle Mailing List To: Subject: [Chevelle-list] Alternator wiring Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2005 14:51:04 -0600 Guys, I need a little help. I pulled the plug-in connector out of the back of my alternator last night & the 40 year old plastic fell apart in my hand. I need to patch something up to get the car to a friends shop & don't know which wire plugs onto which post. My car is a '65 with an external regulator setup so there's a blue wire & a black with white stripe. If you're staring at the back of the alternator & the tab on the missing plug is supposed to go toward the top of the hole, which wire goes to which side? Thanks, Dean Vandergriff _ Dont just search. Check out the madelectrical.com web site. Mark explains the advantages/disadvantages of alternators, and he sells kits to convert external to internal. Hope this helps, it did help me. Gene
Re: [Chevelle-list] alternator ?
Just get yourself an internal regulator, take off the voltage regulator that is on the radiator support and jump the plug. There are 4 pins on the plug. Jump 1 to 3 and 2 to 4. You could also get a little kit from M&H that costs about $25. Tom

[Chevelle-list] Alternator Change Over
Question: Changing over to a CS130 alternator on my 1972 Monte Carlo, the Chevelle tech article mentioned using one for a 1988 Olds Firenza, the 3 listed for this car won't work. Has anyone made this swap on a 1972 vehicle or does anyone have any ideas which alternator will work? Thanks. D.R. Jones
Re: [Chevelle-List] Alternator not charging??
Dan try unhooking the alt from the battery and start it up and use a meter to test the alt to ground if you see the 14.5 that would mean your batt is shorted internally. [Chevelle-List] Alternator not charging??
Fellas, I just installed a new 1 wire alternator on my car. But here's the thing... when the car is running, the voltage at the battery doesn't increase, its as if the alt. is not charging.. it should jump to 14.5 at the battery, but all I get is whatever voltage the battery was at before I started the car.. This is the same reason I replaced the old 3 wire alt, because of a no charge condition.. Could the battery be the real problem here?? any good test you fellas know of?? Thanks. UPDATE! I found out the Alt I was given was not a 65 amp it was a large output which does not allow a Idiot light, only an Voltmeter or a Ammeter. RE: [Chevelle-List] Alternator conversion
John, I seem to recall that a diode is needed in this application. The ignition circuit still sees voltage from the alternator (which is still spinning after the switch is turned off). I don't have the schematic handy, and don't remember where the diode is used. Funny thing is, I did this conversion on my '66 El Camino several years ago and did not run into the problem. My idiot light works and every thing! Go figure. I believe there is a Tech article on the Team Chevelle website on this topic. Worth a look. Re: [Chevelle-List] Alternator Problem(crobertson1)
If the volts drops when items are turned on, is a good sign that the regulator is not working. If the alternator is one with a internal regulator, there is a way to check it. Someone will have to help me with this one, because I have on done this in many years. On the back of the alternator there is a small hole, I am not sure where this is located, but you insert a very small screw driver into the hole and press against something inside while run and if the battery show charging (above 12 volts) then it is the regulator. Re:[Chevelle-List] Alternator Help
craig There is a wiring diagram here: http://www.chevelles.com/techref/ftecref14.html When you look at the picture that shows the back of the alternator, the yellow (white on your car) goes to the #2 connection. Do you have a meter? What are you reading across the battery with motor off? What is it with motor running? What are you reading from the red terminal; on the back of the alternator to ground? Are you sure that you got the correct alternator? If you try running an internal regulated alternator with the external regulator, you will have problems. Sure hope we can all get you on the road soon. rick -- "crobertson1" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: List: Here is my problem. When I purchased my 69 Chevelle I had the 396 engine rebuilt. I did so yesterday. Hooked up the pigtail plug, red wire in the rear and the negative battery cable to the Alt. Bracket. I took it to my motor guy to check and see if I had everything connected correctly. I found that the Alternator is not charging the battery. My problem is my engine guys say he doesn't not much on the electrical side. Can anyone give me some advise. Does anyone have a diagram as to how the wires are connected (including voltage reg. etc.) Thanks guys and gals.. I'm been trying to get her on the road to enjoy her his summer. Bob W., Thanks for your help on the harness plug and boot issues, I'll check out the sources you suggested. Re: [Chevelle-List] alternator and regulator
Robert, You don't have to cut your harness to disconnect your external voltage regulator. A lot of the electrical companies that make harnesses for Muscle Cars and hot rods have an adapter that you plug into your wiring harness. Check with Centec, Painless, Ron Francis, M&H, etc. They can also supply you with the rubber boot. These guys don't kill you on shipping like the Chevelle suppliers do. [Chevelle-List] alternator and regulator
My alternator on my 71 went south yesterday and I replaced it with another SI type alternator as was on the car. My question is what happens when you have an internally regulated alternator and still have the external regulator hooked up. I found that a previous owner had done this and its been working since I bought the car. I am aware of the Tech article on the conversion (cut and splice) but if this will work no need to cut off the plug and do the splice job. Especially if I decide to go all original again some day. Input any one? Also any listers sell the rubber boot that covers the wire that goes to the battery terminal on the back of the alternator? I don't want to buy a little part and get hosed on shipping and handling from one of the big resto. places. I know it's a GM part I just don't have the part number to get it locally. - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
