Re: [Chevelle-list] CARS Inc
I didn't order from CARS but did from a California company. They shipped two quarters to me in one box. One showed up in good shape. The other showed up with dents and dings, etc. I called them and told them that the one damaged quarter was damaged before it was shipped and they said, that was unlikely but ship it back anyway. I was to pay the shipping cost though.Heck, It cost more to ship the one quarter then the two quarters cost. I still have the quarter sitting in my garage. Not sure what I'm going to do with it. So. if you can drive to the place your going to buy it and inspect it before you purchase it, that is the way to go. After my California experience, I found out there wasa place close to home that sold sheet metal (300 miles away) I made the trip and got a good quarter. Once again. School of Hard Knocks. :) Good Luck. RE: [Chevelle-list] CARS Inc
Hi Jim, The general rule on truck deliveries is that you have to be there to receive the order and inspect it for shipping damage in the presence of the driver. If it is damaged, it should either go right back on the truck, or at the very least, the driver should sign off saying that it was damaged prior to delivery. Most companies wont take a panel back after the driver leaves, because at that point it becomes your word against the driver's, and of course the driver is going to say that it was not his/her fault. Goodmark - was: RE: [Chevelle-list] CARS Inc
Another thing lots of people dont realize about Goodmark is that the credit card ordering page on their web site is not secure. I wrote them about this, and they wrote back saying that they store all CC info in encrypted fashion. I wrote back again explaining that the info still has to get from the user's IP address to theirs somehow, and regardless of how they *store* it, the transfer of information is not secure. Also, the info is more likely to get stolen during the transfer than by someone hacking into their database. They didnt respond to that one and havent fixed it either. A GeoTrust SSL certificate is a whole $49/year. I guess they cant justify the huge investment. -Original Message- Thanks for the info, John. I didn't know that about Goodmark. RE: [Chevelle-list] CARS Inc
Only small patch panels are ever made in the U.S. these days AFAIK. I doubt that they are stamping any large panels here. Also, the statement you quoted does not imply that they are making their own sheet metal parts at all. It only implies that they sell *some* sheet metal parts that are made in the U.S. So do I, so does Trevor, so does everybody else. It doesn't mean or even imply that we manufacture them ourselves. I also suspect that they don't make their own seat covers from scratch. Their web site says: C.A.R.S. INC. has thousands of interior and interior trim pieces for your Classic Chevy. We have seat covers, door panels, carpets, headliners, sunvisors, convertible tops, seat foam, headrest covers... Again, no indication whatsoever that they make the stuff themselves. I don't have their paper catalog here, so I can't vouch for that. I don't mean to give you a hard time, but yours is a very loose interpretation of their claims, at least where the sheet metal is concerned. RE: [Chevelle-list] CARS Inc
I'm also not saying that they are definitely not manufacturing their own interiors, or that they are in any way bad to do business with or disreputable. I just said that I couldn't vouch for what their paper catalog says because I don't have one, and their web site gives no indication that they make the stuff themselves, which seems incongruous. Also, the statement about the U.S.-made sheet metal parts doesn't imply that they make their own panels at all. It also doesn't imply that all of the sheet metal they sell is made in the U.S. Just trying to prevent truth decay. BTW, this works for people who live near Goodmark in GA too. Why pay sales tax and shipping when you don't have to? John Nasta -Original Message- snip Another thing that many people don't realize is that if you live near Pittsburgh PA, Oxnard CA, Arlington TX, or Woodbridge Ontario, you can buy from an out of state retailer (like me) and pick your stuff up in person at the manufacturer's warehouse, and not pay sales tax OR shipping. I have lots of customers who have taken advantage of that, and they love it. On a large order, you can literally save hundreds of dollars in tax and shipping if you can go to the warehouse and pick up your order. /snip

RE: [Chevelle-list] CARS Inc
Apparently, according to their catalog, they do make their own interior upholstery. Its not mentioned on their web site though, which is somewhat of a surprise to me, but certainly not a crime. The reason I pointed out that saying Our U.S. made sheet metal... is not the same as saying We manufacture all of our own sheet metal in the U.S. is because I thought people would want to know the truth. The fact that they are in Detroit has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not they are stamping their own sheet metal, or whether all of it is made in the U.S. In fact they dont even claim to make it themselves, or claim that *all* of it is made in the U.S. I could easily make the same statement on my web site, and so could Trevor or any other company that carries any U.S. made sheet metal parts. There are lots of fallacies about this business, and the biggest ones are about who makes what and where. For instance, many people just assume that Goodmark makes all of their own sheet metal, that its all made in the U.S., or that the sheet metal from Goodmark is automatically better than the stuff from DII. The fact is that Goodmark is one of DII's biggest customers, and in many cases youre getting the same stuff. You just pay more for the privilege of buying it from Goodmark. They do make *some* of their own sheet metal, but because of that, people tend to assume that they make it all. Anyway, just trying to separate the facts from the myths. For anybody who would rather believe the myths, that's your choice. I dont see anything wrong in having a discussion about it. I thought that was what this list was for. Re: [Chevelle-List] cars
darren on bewitched had a 65 chevelle ss convert.was that when the oldest boy got a car ?
Re: [Chevelle-List] cars
Well i kind of mentioned some cars but here is the list 1) 57 chev convert. i bought this car is 1965 for a whopping $110.00. i didn't even have a drivers license so my dad had to drive it home. i tore the 3 speed transmission part to put new gaskets in it not knowing about all those little needle bearings. i end up giving this car (wonderbar radio and all) to a buddy because my dad said to get rid of it. during this time period i bought and sold several 55-57 chevys 2) 55 nomad/ 400 bucks. boy i thought this was it.man it was cool. i traded it to a buddy for a 283 and 4 speed . 3) 56 chev 2 door wagon / 250 bucks and it only had 52000 miles on it. within a week of driving around in low gear i fried the powerglide. i saved for 3 months to buy all the parts to put a stick in this car. my dad told me if they had wanted that car to come from factory with a stick it would have come with one. 4) found a great deal on a 56 sedan delivery with a factory rear seat. no motor or trans. i had a 283 and 4 speed i had traded my nomad for. i could still kill my buddy for this trade. 4 speed was worn out and motor used so much oil it wasn't funny. blew the motor up and sold the car for 50 bucks to my buddy i gave the 57 convert to. 5) decided the 56 2 door wagon needed some power. took the 265 out and put a 65,396 i paid 250 bucks for (this was in late 66) . too bad i didn't have a decent trany for it. we was putting 3 speeds in this car every week. traded it to my brother for a 55 2 door hardtop with no motor or trans. 6) bought a 63 chev impala SS for $600.00. sold the front end off the 55 for 35 bucks (this car was a 9 or a 10) and let the car sit until the county towed it off. blew the auto out of the 63 and put a 4 speed in it. lost my license for sometime and my dear brother totaled it. 7) bought a beautiful 64 impala SS convert for 200 bucks no motor and trans. traded the 327 and 150 bucks for a 65 327/365 HP. 365 HP and a powerglide what a combo this car would cruise down the highway. it was summer of 69 and my number came up. two weeks before i left for the army i was broadsided by a drunk. 8) home on leave i bought a nice 65 chevelle SS. i kept this car for years. 9) late 71-72 i bought a 1968 mustang fastback - 69 mach 1- 67 Camaro- 69 z-28 all in less than 15 months. fast cars and me didn't agree at this time of my life. 10) 57 chev 2 door hard top traded motor and trans out of a 65 chevelle SS i had bought for parts. ( i still own some of those parts). drove it while i was putting another motor in my chevelle. blew it up and had to get the chevelle back on the road. sold it for a whopping 40 bucks. 11) in 1973 i got married and inherited with the bride a super clean 64 impala SS. after a few months we decided two cars was too expensive. the impala went. dumb dumb dumb ! wife still wants to kill me ! 13) less than 30 days we bought a brand new 73 340 duster. this car wasn't to slow but very tinny. my chevelle would eat it up. 14) the gas crunch came along. we sold the chevelle. i wasn't thrilled but one car had to go. within 3 months i bought a 69 el camino. SS 396 CHEVELLES were selling for 800 bucks. 15) bought a new 76 blazer. sold the el camino to an uncle. (never give a relative the title until they pay for something) after 8 miles i put a built 454 in it. 15) sold the duster and bought a new 1979 Celica (best car i think i ever owned) drove it for 6 1/2 years. paid 6400 and got almost 5000 on a trade. 16) new Mitsubishi Starion. nice car (too bad the company didn't have its act together) wife loved this car. she still talks about it. 18) the blazer now had many miles on it and i wanted a new truck. bought an 86 GMC 3500 4 x 4. sold the blazer to my brother (he bought it for the motor and has never drove it ). still drive the 86 GMC. 19) traded the Starion in on a 88 Gt. 5.0 convert mustang. all the trimmings. 20) bought wife a new 1993 explorer fully loaded. still have it. wife wants a new car still pondering what to buy. she wants sped again. 21) bought the 1965 chevelle SS that i still own. sold the mustang 22) 98 GMC SLT 3500 4 x 4 with all the trimmings with 454. went out and bought a Paxton Novi 2000 super charger. after 2 years it its still sitting on the bench. this is just the cars i can remember. I bought, sold and traded many cars in between. There were several i owned that i never got the titled changed because i had them for such a short period. Larry

Re: [Chevelle-List] cars
ok one more time, I left out a few that mom dad have owned 67 Galaxie 500 - mom loved that car, thing flew 67 Impala 78 GMC 4x4 - They bought this one new back in 78, planning to redo it and add a 454 72 Caprice - I wish they kept this one for me g 67 Jaguar XKE - mom's first car, she still has it and its being restored now Ford LTD 2 - unsure of year, what a POS, dad ended up smashing it with the 78 GMC 69 Superbee - one of dad's fav cars, had a 440+6, 4 speed, dana 60 w/4.10's, he blew it up and sold it 66 Buick Riviera - one of dads many cars in his early years AMC Rebel - unsure of year, but dad had that, beat around in it, blew it up and drove it to the junk yard I'm sure there are others I'm missing too, lol. 69 Cutlass S - dad bought this 2 years ago, has a 455 don't know what he's going to do with it 84 GMC Suburban - dad got this way back in 1991, been his dailey driver since, has 280,000 niles on it, 3 engines and 3 trannys later 81 Olds 98 Regency - mom got this back in 1990, been her dailey driver ever since 93 GMC Suburban - dad bought this a few weeks ago for a tow vehicle, has a 454 This is what I have managed to obtain thus far 67 fastback Mustang - Someone just gave this to us, I was going to try and do something with it, but someone had previously gutted it and tubbed it, so I sent it to the scrap yard 77 Ford F250 - bought it for 400, kept it as a yard wagon for about 2 years, sold it when I got the 86 Cutlass, truck never made it to the road when Ihad it 86 Cutlass - former detective car, had a 307, put a 350/TH350/3.42 posi in it, my dailey driver 70 Chevelle - my first rest project, paid 200 for it, got a 12 bolt, 4 speed, and the 350 that's in the Cutlass, I used the frame, but the body was beat 70 SS - I bought this one for 2000. used the body and all the SS parts off of it, the frame went under the other 70. 69 Malibu - couldn't resist myself on buying thisone, paid 500 for it, numbers matching, and i'm the second owner 69 Dart GT - my cousin bought this one, then found a 73 Cuda he wanted instead, so I bought the Cuda and traded him even up for the Dart 69 Charger - I've wanted one fo these for some time now, so when the oppotunity came, I bought it, paid 3000, got tons of new parts, and a rumblin little 440 68 Charger - The guy I bought the 69 from gave me this one as a parts car, he said its beyond repair, but I don't think it is. 86 Cutlass Parts car - self explanatory, lol I was looking into either getting a 98 Trans Am or a 96 Impala SS down the road Tom

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Jeez Louis some of you guys have had great cars. Here's my list: 1955 Mercury shortbox pickup inline six with a 3 on the tree. Rusted out floorpans meant you got wet whenever it rained and vacuum powered wipers give a rough indication of how much vacuum the motor was pulling. Bent the front link, giving it a permanent toe in, pulling it out of a ditch with a John Deere D but still sold it for more than I bough it for. Tough little truck had to ran with 7-up for coolant one time which meant we had no mix! Had a 4x4 front bumper. Bought for $50, sold for $50 to a guy who leased it to his brother for $50 a month. 1972? Ford Torino two door 302 manual brakes. Had two different sized tires and a mix of radials and bias ply. Smashed up. Bought for $500, traded for towing charges. nuff said. 1975 Chevrolet pickup 350/th350 blue bottle exhaust and big-assed speakers. Had a second battery so we could play the stereo all night with the speakers on the roof and still fire it up in the morning. Traded for a motorcycle. 1969 Mustang bought with no motor or tranny. Put a POS 302 from a wrecked car into it. Didn't figure out why it rattled and shook until I sold it to a guy who recognized that the motor had been lifted by the waterpump bending the shaft. Doh! 1969 Oldsmobile 442 with rusty everything that had been vandalized and left for dead. Still working on bring it back to life. Original 400 ran OK but tranny slipped. Replace with used tranny, repeat, have 0-W tranny built, put it in, replace motor with used motor, replace motor used motor with rebuilt 455. Gonna get it right one of these days. :) 1970 Malibu 350/th350/all drum/bench seat/two tone car came with the wife. Rebuilt original motor at 300K now at 367K and looking to restore to near-stock. 1995 Saturn (traded in, very cheap to run), 1991 Chevy Z-71 (possibly cursed), 1999 Olds Intrigue, dirt bikes, snowmobiles, and one road motorcycle. -- Cliff If at first you don't succeed, fail, fail, again. Title: RE: [Chevelle-List] cars Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I hate so say cars of our youth, at 36 I like to think I'm still young... here's my list: 1. 1965 Chevelle Malibu, 283, 3spd. I got this one about the time I turned 14 still have it today. Anybody else still have their first car? I ran a 327 4spd with a 9 ford rear 3.70 gears. Very strong combination. The car is currently undergoing a restification with a 454/400TH trans. 2. '68 bug. Bought this one while going to college. I drove it all week to save gas money for the Chevelle on weekends. Sold this one when I bought #3. 3. '73 Vette 350 4 spd. I bought it the weekend I turned 21. An incredible car for a single guy to own one that I wish I still had. Made several long road trips in this car. Installed gas shocks, poly bushings, bigger sway bars, sticky tires for SCCA competition. 4. Got married my wife had a '94 Renault. Fun to drive abuse when it would run. 5. Sold 4 to buy a '77 Vette w/ 350 350 TH. Had his hers Vette's for awhile. I don't know why but I never really liked this car very much. 6. Sold 5 to buy an 80 GMC 4x4 for me let my wife drive the '73 vette 7. Bought a '73 Firebird w/ 400, 400TH, 4:11 posi. We never drove this one. I was in the process of a rebuild traded it for... 8. '69 Malibu w 396 350TH. This one was freshly painted beautiful (black) but the motor was in pieces. I sold the car to the guy that painted it for what we had in the Firebird before I ever got it home kept the motor/trans. 9. Bought a '90 Camry for my wife's daily driver. 10. Sold #3 #6 to buy a '95 ram extended cab. Wonderful truck should have kept it. 11. Sold #9 bought the '65 ragtop which is now my daily driver with 454 400TH. 12. My wife traded the Ram for a '95 Grand Cherokee which she drives everyday which has been a very reliable, low maintenance vehicle. 13. We're in the middle of building a house so I bought a work truck. I own the nastiest, rustiest, 3/4 ton '75 Chevy 4x4 that anybody's ever seen. With 350 4 spd a 4 lift it goes everywhere hauls everything. 14. Our oldest girl jut turned 16 (thankfully she doesn't like my Malibus) we're going to have to do some shopping. I wish I had pics of some of my cars but back then who knew? I used to have pics of all my cars, places friends and I went, ex-girlfriends, etc. I kept pics of everything until I encountered hatred of the worst kind in one of my girlfriends. She destroyed several years of memories in the fireplace after getting very upset with me. I was in the limousine business and she couldn't understand clients running over the contracted time (meaning more money for us). She was batting with half a cageI dumped her and kicked her out, but the memories are still gone. I did find two pics of cars in my mother's albums after her death, but many years are lost with no way to replace them. It took the wind out of photography for me until recently. Now it's all digital and there's backups in two places. I envy anyone that has photos of their cars and friends from the past. Kelly C.
