Quick questions. I have 66 Malibu BB. While running at idle the battery is
charging at approx 17Vdc. I have a Delco Remi with external regulator. I worry
that this is too much and don't want to damage new battery

. I also have a electrical short I just can't seem to find. With battery
disconnected and the key out I find a resistance of around 20 Ohms, indicating
a closed circuit or short. I have pulled all of the fuses and taps but can't
get the short isolated.

Any ideas or recommendations greatly appreciated as always.

I had the wire harness opened up from battery over to horn relay area
all the way across the rad support. Found some rough splices and
repaired with proper connectors. Had the alternator removed from car and
tested OK, I still have a drain on battery. I make my measurement from
positive battery cable to ground with battery and alternator removed
from car and still have 20 Ohms resistance.. With battery in and all
hooked up I test for voltage and watch it drop off rapidly like a
countdown. This is with the ignition off and key removed. Just looking
for the more common points of interest before going wire by wire to find
short or am I missing something?

Re: [Chevelle-list] alternator charging

2008-07-23 Thread mike f
Lorne, so what I think we can say for sure is that the Horn relay is the center
point for all circuit power to the fuse block. There are several connections on
the two large tabs of the horn relay. Disconnect all connections except the one
to the battery. Check for drain. Re-connect those connections one-at-a-time and
see if the leakage occurs again.

Then follow it to the next point which is the fuse block.

That fuse block has two pieces and if old and fragile. My 67 OEM was in bad
shape with corroded terminals both inside the car and on the firewall side. If
you break something, it will be hard to repair but you have to keep searching.
The problem could be inside this clam shell fuse block.

regards
mike

Re: [Chevelle-list] alternator charging

2008-07-23 Thread Dan Rachlin
Lorne,

Do you have a wiring diagram? If not, I have one on PDF I can Email you.
Take off the wire that comes from the battery and goes to the junction
block. Test again, if you still have the problem, then it's on the way to
the starter and coil. If not, then reattach the wires that go to the horn
and check further down the line. There is a huge connection of wires in the
line that go to different points on the car. This joint may also be a
problem. Since the car is old, also check wires someone may have put through
the firewall that do not have grommets as they may be grounding out. Hope
any of this helps.

Agree that a shorted diode in the alternator could cause both problems.
Also where are you measuring to get the 20 ohms?

Not the best looking in my opinion but
Alan Grove components makes brackets for a short pump big block that mounts the
alternator on the passenger side. Check http://www.alangrovecomponents.com/B.B.Short_Pump.htm
One mounts the alternator pretty high and may not fit under the hood and
one is a low profile that mounts the alternator about mid-carb
height. They are priced online at $70 and $85 respectively. If
neither of those fits the bill, I have some ideas on how you could build your
own very similar to this:

Take some work and probably cost about
the same as the ones above but itd be different.

Id almost bet it would put the
alternator fan pulley too far out from the block to align with the water pump
pulley. The two standoffs as Moroso calls them that space the
alternator away from the head and block are 5 and 3 respectively.

Hello:you can get a alternator built to any
specs, with the load that you had in the rain, actually a 63 amp it should have
been okay, take the alternator and get it tested for correct operation, also make
shure the belt was tight,if you can put a avr or a similiar tested on the car,to
see if the alternator was actually putting out as close as possible to 63 amps
would be a good test to see if the alternator is okay internally.

A 63 amp alternator should handle that load.
How's the belt? Good tension, not hard and glazed?
Since it was raining it may have been slipping.
Is the voltage regulator ok?
Just something to check before condemning the alternator.

Personally with
the three things going at once I wouldnt worry about the volts dropping
to 12 as long as it comes back up during normal operations.
A 63 amp unit should be enough if its in good working order. If
you also had a high-end stereo then a 100-130 amp wouldnt be out of line
IMO.

Hi Dave,
  I have a 1968 Chevelle SS 396 that I installed a One-wire Alternator from
Powermaster on 06-20-2002. Part number 8002. the Output at Idle is with a stock
pulley at 2400 rpm was 75 amps, and at hwy speeds of 6000 Dyno Rpm was 102
amps. I just had to run a wire directly to the battery. I didn't mess with
running it through the starter etc. I also had to modify my Voltage Reg to keep
the battery light from staying on all the time. The only thing I run off this
is an MSD box, radio lights etc. No stereo or other add ons.

I upgraded mine years ago to a 100 amp unit.
I don't open these things up, but it was able to be done within my existing
4-wire case. I don't run anything with enough draw to put much of a load
on it at this time, but if I choose to add more accessories I know I'm

2005-09-15 Thread Bow Tie
You probably have an old DN model. You can't use the
external regulator with an internal one. It's one or
the other. If your not concerned about being correct
as far as originality, I would suggest you move up to
a SI alternator. A 12SI 94 amp is simple to install.
They're are several sites to help you do this. These
are a couple of links for you to look at.
This is a good article...
http://hotrod.com/techarticles/pit/index15.html
also M.A.D. has alot of info.
http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/delcoremy.shtml
The fact that you have a serpentine belt means nothing
as far as which alt. you have. You can put that belt
on just about anything with the right pulleys. Hope
this helps you out. I did this swap to a 12 SI on my
'66.
You won't regret it. Especially if your in a slow
cruise. And if you add air, radio amp, elect. fans,
etc later on you'll be all set with enough amps to run
everything.

What do you mean by new style alternator? Is it
 a
10SI or 12 SI? If it is, it has an internal
 regulator.
If it's a DN old style you have an external
regulator. You will only have as many volts at the
alt. as you have in the battery with the car not
running. You can check the alt. With a volt meter
 on
DC you can check at the battery or on the bus bar
 of
your horn relay(10 ga. red wire) while the engine
 is
running at about 2400 rpm. You should show about
 14.5
volts. If not, take your alt. to a store that can
check it. This test is not always accurate. You
 may
have a bad alt. and the thing will test good. The
charging wire going to the regulator will be a 20
 ga.
red. It should be the 2nd wire from the pass.
 side.
You may have a weak battery also that won't hold a
  charge.

The fact that you have a serpentine belt means nothing
as far as which alt. you have. You can put that belt
on just about anything with the right pulleys. Hope
this helps you out. I did this swap to a 12 SI on my
'66.
You won't regret it. Especially if your in a slow
cruise. And if you add air, radio amp, elect. fans,
etc later on you'll be all set with enough amps to run
everything.

What do you mean by new style alternator? Is it
a
10SI or 12 SI? If it is, it has an internal
regulator.
If it's a DN old style you have an external
regulator. You will only have as many volts at the
alt. as you have in the battery with the car not
running. You can check the alt. With a volt meter
on
DC you can check at the battery or on the bus bar
of
your horn relay(10 ga. red wire) while the engine
is
running at about 2400 rpm. You should show about
14.5
volts. If not, take your alt. to a store that can
check it. This test is not always accurate. You
may
have a bad alt. and the thing will test good. The
charging wire going to the regulator will be a 20
ga.
red. It should be the 2nd wire from the pass.
side.
You may have a weak battery also that won't hold a
 charge.

Just get yourself an internal regulator, take off the voltage regulator that is on the radiator support and jump the plug. There are 4 pins on the plug. Jump 1 to 3 and 2 to 4. You could also get a little kit from MH that costs about $25.

[Chevelle-List] Alternator not charging??

2003-06-12 Thread Dan McIntosh

Fellas,

I just installed a new 1 wire alternator on my
car.
But here's the thing... when the car is running,
the voltage at the battery doesn't increase, its as if the alt. is not
charging..
it should jump to 14.5 at the battery, but all I
get is whatever voltage the battery was at before I started the
car..
This is the same reason I replaced the old 3 wire
alt, because of a no charge condition..

Could the battery be the real problem here?? any
good test you fellas know of?? Thanks.

Dan

try unhooking the alt from the battery and start it up and use a meter to
test the alt to ground
if you see the 14.5 that would mean your batt is shorted internally.

2002-10-08 Thread Spencer, Darrell

John,

I seem to recall that a diode is needed in this application. The ignition
circuit still sees voltage from the alternator (which is still spinning
after the switch is turned off). I don't have the schematic handy, and
don't remember where the diode is used. Funny thing is, I did this
conversion on my '66 El Camino several years ago and did not run into the
problem. My idiot light works and every thing! Go figure. I believe there
is a Tech article on the Team Chevelle website on this topic. Worth a look.

Craig,
I just recently installed a set of gauges in my 65. Assuming you are using a voltmeter, ( - ) goes to a good ground point, and ( + ) goes to any 12VDC positive connection that is hot when the car is turned on. ( I used my radio circuit ). If you are using an ammeter, I have no clue, never really seen a point in those. Take it easy.

And I'll post them on my website for a while for everyone to get.

Right now I left them as .bmp files, so they're a little fat.
If there is still interest next week, I'll work on reformatting them as .jpg
files. My quick attempt this morning left them fuzzy looking, so I'll
  stick with the .bmp format.

If the volts drops when items are turned on, is a
good sign that the regulator is not working. If the alternator is one with a
internal regulator, there is a way to check it. Someone will have to help me
with this one, because I have on done this in many years. On the back of the
alternator there is a small hole, I am not sure where this is located, but you
insert a very small screw driver into the hole and press against something
inside while run and if the battery show charging (above 12 volts) then it is
the regulator. Does anyone know how to do this??

Hooked up the pigtail plug, red wire in the rear and the negative battery cable

everything connected correctly. I found that the Alternator is not
charging the battery. My problem is my engine guys say he doesn't not much

There is a wiring diagram here: http://www.chevelles.com/techref/ftecref14.html
When you look at the picture that shows the back of the alternator, the yellow (white
on your car) goes to the #2 connection.

Do you have a meter? What are you reading across the battery with motor off?

What is it with motor running?

What are you reading from the red terminal; on the back of the alternator to ground?

Are you sure that you got the correct alternator? If you try running an internal
regulated alternator with the external regulator, you will have problems.

Sure hope we can all get you on the road soon.

Robert,
You don't have to cut your harness to disconnect your external voltage
regulator. A lot of the electrical companies that make harnesses for Muscle
Cars and hot rods have an adapter that you plug into your wiring harness.
Check with Centec, Painless, Ron Francis, MH, etc. They can also supply you
with the rubber boot. These guys don't kill you on shipping like the

the
conversion (cut and splice) but if this will work no need to cut off the

Also any listers sell the rubber boot that covers the wire that goes to

Re: [Chevelle-List] Alternator

2002-06-16 Thread Bob

Craig,
Sounds like someone put a "one wire alternator" or
properly called, a self exciting alternator, on your car. Your Chevelle
originally came with an external voltage regulator. One popular conversion is to
use an internally regulated 10Si, 12Si or CS130. These will all work with the
original wiring in the car, with a modification to the wiring at the regulator.
There are also adapter plugs for the plug at the regulator so that you do not
have to cut up your harness. In your case you have an internal self exciting
alternator, probably a 10Si. The only difference in the one wire like yours and
the standard three wire is the voltage regualtor. On the one wire or self
exciting alt, the voltage sensing and field wires are connected internally to
the voltage regulator, hense no external connections (you should see some type
of plug where the connector has been removed). On the standard three wire
voltage regulator, there will still be the + battery connection stud, and the
two wire connector, one wire goes to the dash light (or resistor if you don't
have a dash generator light) and the other goes to a place in your wiring to
sense voltage for the regulator (most times people just route it to the +
battery post.) The problem with the one wire alt is that inorder for the voltage
regualtor to turn on, the engine must be reved to approx 1800 rpm, this is to
build up enought voltage internally to start or excite the regulator.

If you want to make your car original, you will
need a 10N alternator and external voltage regulator and the wiring will need to
be checked to see if any modifications have been made. If you need any help with
this problem, just email me and I will be glad to help.

   After putting my 396
engine in my car I found that the alternator did not have a plug on the side

The other connector you need to connect has 2 wires one blue other white. Once
you find it, check the orientation of the contacts. Are they like this: -- or like
this: = . One is for internal regulated other for external.Unless your 69 has been
modified you need an external regulated alternator. Just get the GM alternator that
mates to your connector.I also have a vague memory that some may plug into the
back others plug into the side near the back.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Alternator/generator test

Did all the tests you mentioned and discovered that instead of a plastic
connector that houses the two wires that plug into the back of the
alternator, the connector islong gone and just the two wires are there and
slip on individually. One of these wires was not connected. The minute I
connected this wire, voltage (running) went from 12.20 to 13.9 to 14.9. I
also pulled off the positive battery lead and car stayed running and turned
all accessories and still kept running. The dome light was flickering in
rhythm to the movements of the wipers. Something is fried on the wipers
too, on the low speed they crawl across the windshield very slow and on
high speed they come up the windshield a couple inches and just sit there.
Also the washer squirters are missing!*Jeff adds them to the list * :)

If it is a 71, it should be an alternator. An old trick is to start the
engine and pull the positive terminal off the battery. If the engine
quits, there is not enough alternator output to even run the engine. If
it keeps running, turn on the lights and anything else that drains a
battery. If everything keeps working, then you have a a good alternator
output and probably a defective battery.

The other way is as mentioned, put a voltmeter on the battery and record
the reading. Start up the vehicle and increase engine speed to the
maximum voltmeter reading. Usually, it will read between +1 to +2 volts
if the output is OK. If nothing happens or it decreases, then it is the
alternator-regulator that is probably at fault.

If you do have a generator (why I haven't a clue), it has to have current
applied to it to make output. So if you have a dead battery, a generator
will not work at all until you give it a fully charged battery. Also, it
tends to put out nothing at idle and needs higher speed of rotation than
an alternator to make current.

My guess is that your alternator has a burned out diode and it is shorting
out your battery. Usually happens when you try to jumper to a dead
battery or get the polarity crossed while jumpering. A large spark
occurs and you can kiss one or more diodes goodbye.

If you have a good automotive electrical shop around, it is better to
rebuild what you have then replacing with a rebuilt from an Autogotcha
store. I have bought rebuilt alternators that have had to be completely
disassembeled and parts rotated 180 degrees to get them to fit.

Was running my car and turned it off and upon a restart, it failed. Checked
the battery and it was dead. It is brand spanking new. Anyway I then looked
at the generator and one of the slip-on clips was off. No problem, I pushed
it back on but it was difficult and the back of this generator looks pretty
nasty. The male leads that the slip-ons attach to look real bad so I am
wondering if there is an easy way to put a meter on the generator to verify
that it is in fact changing/working?

Re: [Chevelle-List] Alternator HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

2001-11-28 Thread S E A N

You cannot put an internal regulated Alternator in a car that was wired
for an external regulated , that is why you are reading so many volts .
However ther is a kit to covert the wiring ,it takes 2mins to do . YEAR
ONE sells it part #HU30 goes for $13.95 .Call 1-800-932-7663
