 Steve,
One thing I noticed on that E-bay car is that the A/c if an aftermarket
setup. They are using the factory compressor but they way the hoses go
into the firewall indicates an aftermarket setup. Aftermarket A/c isn't
necessarily a bad thing but the seller should have mentioned it.

The rear mount antenna was a factory option in 69 Chevelles. You could order
it that way. It was not a dealer installed option. It was installed at the
factory just like the front mount. It should be mounted on the pass rear
quarter. You could get it with AM antenna or AM/FM antenna.
My L78 purchased by my uncle new and by me in 1975 has a rear mount AM
antenna.

I have owned one of my 69's since it was new.
Antenna was on front fender from factory. Since that time I have acquire 2
other 69's and both had front mounted antennas. Guess you could order rear
antenna as you could order almost anything in those days.

Very good points to consider and I now have some cars to check on regarding many
of the concerns that you collectevly have mentioned.

Question, how important is complete numbers matching for a
true SS? Many of the cars have engines and some trannys that have been updated
or changed and might be the only significant item that does not match the
original car.

Steve

Steve: Welcome to the List. Obviously you've got a few miles on you a few dollars to spend. I had a 65SS in 65. After the Army, a few marriages 3 kids, at the age of 52 I went looking for my dream. You can call it a mid-life thing if you want. Like yourself I'm not super mechanical. I can do more with my head than I can with my hands. But I also love driving my 65SS, havingsome knowledge being around the shows people. Occassionally you'll hear a remark about those who can do those who buy. Don't let it bother you. If you look at what's going on in today's muscle car sales auctions you'll see our generation doesn't have 10 years to build a car. There are muscle car wizardsout there that love to build sell. Those of us that can't build, love to drive maintain, and share the passion. Maintenance alone on one of these cars canbe a full time spring to summer job! Especially if you want to show it. Once you buy, you'll want to add your own touches.

The guys on this List are incredible. The amount of expertise knowledge is mind boggling. No one holds back. The name of the game is HELP SHARING with RESPECT for all. Indicate what areayou live in the guys will find you. There are also Chevelle Clubs throughout the US, my own is the Maryland CC, check out our website, National organizations such as ACES.The List as well as all these other areas can be valuable when looking for the right car. I found mine on the List had it shipped from the west coast almost 5 years ago. The process took about 3 months to complete from search to delivery. Once again Good Luck Welcome to the List. Be careful when talking to strangers utilize listen to these guys on the List. They won't steer you wrong!

Danny;

Thanks for your response and comments. My perfect car is the one I had in high school (1970-1974) a 69 Chevelle SS-396 (not sure hp I had) Lemans Blue hard top with white vinyl roof and two racing stripes down hood and trunk with white pin stripes on the side. While my car had bench seats, black interior and column shift automatic I would like to have what I always wanted the car to have, bucket seats and 4 speed transmission. Would like to find one with factory air as I don't imagine I will be as concerned about racing it now as I was then but rather be more concerned with my wife being happy with air conditioner. I believe the car would really have looked better with a white interior for seats and that's what I would like now as I am probably better equipped to take care of them.

Danny, finding this car is probably like looking for a needle in a hay stack however that is the perfect car for me. I just want to try to find one as close to this configuration as possible. As far as price I am fairly flexible based on the quality of the car in relation to what it is worth. I am open to a fully restored car done by a quality restoration facility or a really clean car that would be fun to own and drive. In dollar terms say from 15,000 to 50,000. Due to business commitments I don't have a lot of spare time and am not really mechanically inclined but do enjoy driving the cars and being around people and events that share the same passion.

Does this help for starters?

Steve

You should try to find a local person who is known to have some expertise to
look at it first, but if I were going to spend that much money on a car, I
would go there and see it myself as well. A few hundred bucks for a plane
ticket is worthwhile if you are going to spend $20K. They all look nice in
pictures.

BTW, power steering, power brakes, and A/C are not rarely found on these
cars. The one I bought last week has all of those options (and the front brakes
are disc).

No pictures of the trunk (not the nice new carpet, but the metal) or the
floorboards (you can shoot into a mirror for those).

No mention of whether the engine is original or if it's an original SS car (so
it's probably not).

John;

Thanks for the information and advice. Talked to the car dealer this
morning. According to him car is an orginal SS with matching numbers except
for engine. He said he has documentation that the engine was switched under
warranty shortly after car was purchased new.

I have not heard from any list members in the area of Ball Louisiana so I
asked for dealer to give me a reference on credible person to look at car
for me. He made a recomendation and I called the guy who seems very
knowledeable and is a rep for cars on line inspections. Claims to have been
in car business for 30 years and doing this for over 10. He is going there
at lunch to inspect the car and then call me. Dealer claims car is a strong
2. Car came from Texas.

Thats the latest.

Thanks again to everyone for your help.

I joined the list just a few days ago after finding the web site while

a
1969 Chevelle SS-396 to purchase and have been looking and searching for
some time to try and locate the right car. I know what I want and have

Does anyone within the group know of someone that is familiar with 69's

Be double leery of dealers. They'll tell you anything and accept absolutely
no responsibility for it being correct. Unless he has documented proof of
the car, like build sheet or POP that matches VIN and shows original engine
to be a 396, anything else like 'dealer replaced engine' is worthless IMO.

John;

You should try to find a local person who is known to have some expertise to
look at it first, but if I were going to spend that much money on a car, I
would go there and see it myself as well. A few hundred bucks for a plane
ticket is worthwhile if you are going to spend $20K. They all look nice in
pictures.

BTW, power steering, power brakes, and A/C are not rarely found on these
cars. The one I bought last week has all of those options (and the front
brakes are disc).

No pictures of the trunk (not the nice new carpet, but the metal) or the
floorboards (you can shoot into a mirror for those).

No mention of whether the engine is original or if it's an original SS car
(so it's probably not).

 Steve,
You might try to make the ACES Regional events where you will see many 69s
and might be able to buy one. You will be able to tap the huge wealth of
knowledge that is always walking around as well. I suggest you learn how
to
read a trim tag so you can tell what you are looking at. There is some
software available on the TC website that can help you with all the codes.
The list can probably help you make up a list of codes to look for on the
trim tags. I bought the software and have used it many times.

Thanks for the plugs, guys! Dale, you're right about me not advertising my
stuff on the 'net. I prefer to have ACES Members get first shot at anything
I try to sell. However, both the '69 SS convert and the black SS with the
427/six-speed are both gone. The only '69 I have left is the Frost green
Malibu hardtop (350/PG/PS/PB/factory A/C) w/green bench interior. Nice,
solid KY car that's a good cruiser with newer paint, redone interior, and
five-spoke Vintage (Torq Thrust look-alikes) 16x8 wheels.

Oh, and we've moved into our new home/office, so the ACES Hotline has also
changed to: (615) 643-ACES (2237). I can send pix of the Malibu (and any
other car I have listed in Chevelle World classifieds) to anyone who's
interested.

OK, now I gotta get back to work, as I almost have the next issue of CW
ready to go to press, and it's the one with the CB'06 registration form in
it!

Danny;

Thanks for your response and comments. My perfect
car is the one I had in high school (1970-1974) a 69 Chevelle SS-396 (not sure
hp I had) Lemans Blue hard top with white vinyl roof and two racing stripes down
hood and trunk with white pin stripes on the side. While my car had bench seats,
black interior and column shift automatic I would like to have what I always
wanted the car to have, bucket seats and 4 speed transmission. Would like to
find one with factory air as I don't imagine I will be as concerned about racing
it now as I was then but rather be more concerned with my wife being happy with
air conditioner. I believe the car would really have looked better with a white
interior for seats and that's what I would like now as I am probably better
equipped to take care of them.

Danny, finding this car is probably like looking
for a needle in a hay stack however that is the perfect car for me. I just want
to try to find one as close to this configuration as possible. As far as price I
am fairly flexible based on the quality of the car in relation to what it is
worth. I am open to a fully restored car done by a quality restoration facility
or a really clean car that would be fun to own and drive. In dollar terms say
from 15,000 to 50,000. Due to business commitments I don't have a lot of spare
time and am not really mechanically inclined but do enjoy driving the cars and
being around people and events that share the same passion.

Does this help for starters?

I doubt that you will find one already done just like that
for several reasons, only one of which is that the 1969 SS cars did not come
with hood trunk stripes, or pin striping for that matter. I am also
surprised to hear that it had a white roof stripes and a black interior. I
thought they were usually more color coordinated than that. My guess is that the
car was altered before you got it.

doubt that you will find one already done just like that for several reasons,
only one of which is that the 1969 SS cars did not come with hood trunk
stripes, or pin striping for that matter. I am also surprised to hear that it
had a white roof stripes and a black interior. I thought they were
usually more color coordinated than that. My guess is that the car was altered
  before you got it.

  Are
you sure that you want to give your phone numbers out on an email reflector
that is trawled by spammers every day? Something to
  consider.

  Danny;

  Thanks
for your response and comments. My perfect car is the one I had in high school
(1970-1974) a 69 Chevelle SS-396 (not sure hp I had) Lemans Blue hard top with
white vinyl roof and two racing stripes down hood and trunk with white pin
stripes on the side. While my car had bench seats, black interior and column
shift automatic I would like to have what I always wanted the car to have,
bucket seats and 4 speed transmission. Would like to find one with factory air
as I don't imagine I will be as concerned about racing it now as I was then
but rather be more concerned with my wife being happy with air conditioner. I
believe the car would really have looked better with a white interior for
seats and that's what I would like now as I am probably better equipped to
  take care of them.

  Danny,
finding this car is probably like looking for a needle in a hay stack however
that is the perfect car for me. I just want to try to find one as close to
this configuration as possible. As far as price I am fairly flexible based on
the quality of the car in relation to what it is worth. I am open to a fully
restored car done by a quality restoration facility or a really clean car that
would be fun to own and drive. In dollar terms say from 15,000 to 50,000. Due
to business commitments I don't have a lot of spare time and am not really
mechanically inclined but do enjoy driving the cars and being around people
and events that share the same passion.

  Does
  this help for starters?

I will start by saying that I am new to the list
and would like to ask in advance for your patience if I am posting a question
that is inappropriate for this list. I would also appreciate someone letting me
know if it is not an appropriate question.

I joined the list just a few days ago after finding
the web site while doing some searches on Google. Once I joined I was amazed at
the amount of talent and information that existed within this group. I am trying
to find a 1969 Chevelle SS-396 to purchase and have been looking and searching
for some time to try and locate the right car. I know what I want and have found
a few cars that would come close howeverthe fact that I am a novice
ultimately undermines my confidence in pulling the trigger on purchasing a car.

Does anyone within the group know of someone that
is familiar with 69's that would not mind consulting with me regarding my
hopeful purchase. Additionaly, I would not expect this type of help without
gladly agreeing to pay a pre arranged fee.

Again, please accept my appologies if this is an
inappropriate question.

Steve, I bought a rust bucket Malibu and hope to be going to paint soon. I believe the one gentleman was right, that the stripes on the hood were not a factory option on the 69's although who knows with special orders. Also, with your long list of specific items, chances are slim of you finding that exact car.

One thing to consider is that an SS clone is a very easy thing to fake for the model year 1969 since you can't tell by the VIN if it was an SS or Malibu, or"plain jane". However, there are some cases where the color of the car can prove it was an SS from the factory. You'll pay a premium for a true SS, and if it's that easy to fake by throwing in a bigger engine and a few emblems, is it really that big of a deal?

Rust in the window corners, trunk pan, floor pans, floor support braces, and quarters needing to be replaced are very common on cars that haven't gone through a complete restoration.

Here's my point. Find a really nice Malibu and take it to a trusted body shop for an evaluation before you buy it. Get a complete eval and what it would cost to make it exactly like what you want it to be with a nice new quality paint job. Also consider some upgrades like disc brakes and better suspension as well as all new weather stripping. Get the engine built like you want it, or better yet, get a new crate 454 or if you have the bucks, get a new LS7 aluminum 427 small block. Put a 5 speed overdrive Tremec tranny behind it, and a rebuilt posi 12 bolt rear with 3:73 gears and cruise til the cows come home.

If you need to deviate from factory stock anyway to get what you want, wouldn't that be a better way to go? No worries about being "correct" and modify it any way you want!

Now, if it's a factory correct, numbers matching, documented factory SS car that you just have to have, then buy one fully restored as it's cheaper than restoring one.if you can find what you wantand then don't modify it or else ...what's the point?

 Steve

Where are you located? If you find a car that appeals to you, you should be able to enlistsomeone locally, from the list or Team Chevelle ( http://www.chevelles.com/forums/
) to look at it with/for you. Good luck in your search.

When you fin the car you think you want, isuggest you hire an appraiser to
verify what condition etc. it is in before pulling the trigger. A family member
did not do so recently and really got burnt on a 69 chevelle. It's money well
spent. gm66
