Subject: Re: Loopback Address

Loopback is a virtual inteface on the router. It
is up all the time.
There are some routing prototocols require a router ID
such as OSPF and BGP. If you use a phyical interface's
ip address as the router's ID, when that physical interface
goes down, the routing adjacency will change/break. In the
OSPF case, right after the reboot, when all the physical
interfaces are not up yet (keepalive have not been exchanged),
the OSPF process may not start at all, because no router ID
is available yet.
Another usage is, when you use unnumber layer 3 addresses,
sometime, you want to test the reachability to the router,
you can use the loopback interface address for this purpose.
You can also use loopback interface for testing purposes. Such
as, define a bouch of layer 3 networks on the lookback interfaces
(you can have multiple loopback interfaces on a router)
and test the routing protocols and updates etc.
You can also use lookup interface to perform routing load balance:
S0 S0
R1 === R2
S1 S1
On the routers you can setup static routes with the next hop addressed to
the loopback interface address on the other router. Since the router has
two paths to that loopback interface, therefore you can reach the next hop
using two paths. This static route can be useful, for example, in the case
of BGP routing etc.
You can also use loopback interface to perform debug without affect any
physical connection. Such as observe routing updates etc.
That's all I can think about. Maybe others can add more..

Re: CIT 4.0 Vs Support 2.0

2000-06-08 Thread woody

I havent sat the new exam but I have been reading the list for over a month
now. Why dont you take a look at Igor A. Birioukovs post from earlier
today. He gives the new PDF links for the CCNP 2.0 exams (quite handy).

General concensus from this list over the last couple of weeks is that the
content is 95%ish unchanged, so the old material should still suffice. I
would imagine they have moved the emphasis from ISDN and spread the exam
topics more evenly across the other possible topics.

Hope this helps...

That link is at (if you haven't got the earlier post). Watch the wrap... -

telnet, ping, multicast and etc

2000-06-08 Thread Sim, CT (Chee Tong)

Dear friends,

Can I ask you some basic question, don't laugh at me :P if u just want to
answer me one of the question, just help me .

1) What is difference between ping and telnet? telnet is using port 23, how
about PING? which port is that? I understand we can use the access-list to
control whether a telnet session can be established, how about ping, Are we
using the ip route command to whether PING traffic to pass thru?

2) We open a port in Firewall to let user can telnet to a server in remote
site. Does it mean that we can ping to the server. If not, What should we
do in order to let user can ping to the server?

3) What is mean by Multicast? I know there is a range of IP for Multicast?
But when we need it?

Thanks

Sim Chee Tong

RE: a question about ip connectivity

2000-06-08 Thread Bob Vance

Sorry. Been away awhile.

>after dial our change to
> 167.65.104.0 255.255.255.0 167.65.104.42 167.65.104.42 2
> 167.65.104.0 255.255.255.0 167.65.107.12 167.65.107.12 1
  ---^
Looks to me like a bug or misconfig somewhere. This second line could
only be correct if the mask were 255.255.252.0.

Notice that if the dial-in server mask were really /22 (255.255.252.0),
then
167.65.107.12

*would* be in subnet

167.65.104.0 255.255.252.0

Maybe DUN's seeing already a /24 mask for 167.65.104.0 and
has a bug or something.
In that case, I would *expect* the routing table to look like:

167.65.104.0 255.255.255.0 167.65.104.42 167.65.104.42 2
167.65.104.0 255.255.252.0 167.65.107.12 167.65.107.12 1
---^

and the first route to be used, instead of the second (longer prefix).

You didn't answer the question about what OS and, if it's Win95, whether
you're using DUN 1.3 or not.

Bob,

Thanks for your detailed posting. The internal LAN segment has same B
class
network as dial-up, it 's because I dial to our dial in server located
in
the other branch office(not dail to internet). We set the ip network to
B
class, while use 24 prefix to subnet it. Now I have resolved this
problem.
I noticed that after dial out, the routing table of the PC be affected,
as
follows:

Before dial out
 167.65.104.0 255.255.255.0 167.65.104.42 167.65.104.42 1
after dial our change to
167.65.104.0 255.255.255.0 167.65.104.42 167.65.104.42 2
167.65.104.0 255.255.255.0 167.65.107.12 167.65.107.12 1

note, 167.65.107.12 is gotten from PPP server IP pool.
167.65.104.42 is Ethernet Card IP addr.
Can you explain why this route table be updated to this appearance. And
why
this happen?

Thanks,

Subject:RE: a question about ip connectivity

What OS are you running on the desktop?
If Win95, upgrade to MS DUN 1.3.

What does
route print
show, both before and after the dial-up connection.
What is the netmask on your LAN IP address?

You shouldn't have to do anything to have access *to* the Ethernet LAN
*and* the dial-up network at the same time.
You will get a default gateway that will allow access to Internet
sites thru the dial-up, but it shouldn't break access *to* the LAN
side -- you should still be able to access anything on the LAN side.

I do this every day -- in fact that is how I am connected to send this
post. I am on a PC on the LAN in my house, talking *through* a Win95 PC
(running NAT software) that has a LAN card *and* has made a dial-up
connection to the Internet. This "NAT" PC talks to both the internal
LAN and the Internet.

The only thing that I see different in your case, is that the LAN is
a subnet of the *same* Class B network as the dial-up.
NIC = 167.65.104.42
PPP = 167.65.107.12
I would assume that both prefixes are /24, but (and I'm not gonna test
it), but perhaps DUN has a problem with using subnets of the same
Classful network for the LAN and the dial-up.
In my case the PPP "network" is 10 and the LAN is 192.168.1 --
totally different and no possibility of confusion.

BTW, how is that your internal LAN has the same Class B network address
as the dial-up?

Now, one final point:
Joe used the word "across" the LAN (while I specifically said, "to"),
and he would obviously be correct.
If you were going to access another "internal" subnet, besides
167.65.104.0/24, say, 167.65.200.0/24, then, of course, you'd need
to have a router on your LAN to that subnet *and* add a static route on
the PC to that subnet (route add ...) thru that router.

>From your post, however, I did not take this last situation to be your
problem. It seems that you couldn't connect to *other* 167.65.104.X
guys.

you can open upto 5 simultaneous telnet connections to a router and these
connections are made on virtual terminal lines abbreviated as vty. Each of
the vty lines can be configured separately or in a group. To configure one
vty line you can use the command :

line vty x ( where x can be 0,1,2,3,4) ...

in order to configure all the lines simultaneously you write ..

line vty 0 4

Note :

On normal routers you can open upto 5 simultaneous connections but some
devices like the access servers ( 2511 etc.. ) allow you to increase the
maximum vty connections.

you can reset the line by issuing the command :

clear line x ( where x is the terminal line numnber )

MPLS Basic

2000-06-08 Thread Zahid Hassan

Hi everyone,

I was reading some basic Overview on MPLS and came accross some questions,
I wonder if somebody could explain this to me:

- assume that we have a router.
- On it, we have a ethernet interface enabled for MPLS
- Ethernet max transmission unit (MTU)is 1500
- A packet as big as the max MTU now needs to be sent through the ethernet
- A label is 4 bytes long

We cannot transmit more then the MTU over the ethernet ?
does MPLS provide fragmentation ??

Thanks in advance,

Regards

Z

RE: ask for help on DHCP

2000-06-08 Thread Cai, Land

Yes, I only enable ip helper-address command on the Ethernet port on
router1. But there is a quite strange problem. From DHCP manager( this is on
NT4.0 ) I can see this active IP registration leased by one of the remote
client on LAN1, But on LAN3, I can't ping this active IP. I can ping IP
address of Ethernet port of router1. As well, I defined many options for
this IP scope on DHCP manager, such as domain name, DNS server, WIN server,
note type.
Do you have any idea about this?

Yep, all you need is to configure the Helper address (ip helper-address
[address]) command on Router1, and as long as Router1 has route to LAN3
(whether by static or routing protocol... and Router3 has route back to
LAN1).
See, Router1 will take the DHCP broadcasts and convert them into unicast
packets and send them directed to LAN3. For the "address" argument in the
command you can use the specific IP of the DHCP server or use the broadcast
address for that network (192.168.100.255).

Polarity Reversal.

2000-06-08 Thread Ron Tan

Hi all,

Does Cisco's Voice Boxes such as AS5300 and the
3660s able to handle polarity reversal in certain countries that implement it ?
Please advise. If no, then does anyone knows what equipment that can perform the
role of reversing the polarity sent by the telco switch ?

Thanks,

Ron

RE: ask for help on DHCP

2000-06-08 Thread Kevin S. Mahler

On the PC on Lan1 can you check to see that it got it's IP address and
default gateway?
Windows95/98 command: winipcfg
WindowsNT command: ipconfig /all

What did you set as the default gateway for this scope of IP addresses?
If the IP address is assigned with the wrong default gateway you will see
exactly the type of behavior you have described. I suspect this is what
is happening.

The default gateway for the scope on Lan1 needs to be the router interface
on Lan1.

If Lan1 is remote and you cannot check the computer, log into the router on
Lan1 and see if it can ping the address. If it can then it's about a 99%
chance
the default gateway of the machine is set incorrectly.

An incorrect default gateway address accounts for about 75% of the ES
connectivity problems I run into.

Re: EIGRP contiguous AS

2000-06-08 Thread quezada

What are the  major
differences b/w EIGRP and OSPF aside from the fact that EIGRP is Cisco's
?
for starters one major diffrence
eigrp routes desktop protocols and ospf does not (ip only)
Why would one use EIGRP over OSPF and vice-versa?
I would use ospf in a network that involves many ,many routers and
scales across the country or the world
I know that EIGRP uses bandwidth as it's metrics and OSPF uses cost
but
which one is a better metric?
cost and metrics define the same thing reachability to a distant
network. My opinion is that eigrp metrics are better due to it's metric
involves more variables to calculate it's cost.

(ii) Also,is Todd's coverage of ISDN enough for the Exam..

and FINALLY ,
(iii) Any last minute useful tips for the Exam.

I request you all to clarify my above doubts at the earliest.

Re: CCNA 2.0: Classful or Classless?

2000-06-08 Thread Constance Cate

Ok, maybe I'm a ditz. I've been telling people that when you are preparing
for a test you are expected to understand the default behavior of the IOS
version you are being tested on. If the question does not specify a
different configuration from the default, then assume the default. Sometimes
the information is implied by some configuration detail and not directly
stated, so. you have to think through all the implications of the
information you are given.
If that is correct then the question becomes, what version is the test based
on and what is the default behavior of that version?
If I'm way off track just slap me, after all those years running the help
desk I'm used to it and I respond quite well to that type of correction.

RE: MCSE now wants to go Cisco....

2000-06-08 Thread gorer

Jay,

Why do you want the CCNA certification? Are you working or going to be
working in the networking arena? If not, my suggestion is don't take the
test because it will just be another piece of paper hanging on your wall and
i think that's what most of us would rather not see happen. Or maybe it's
too late for that...

On the other hand, if you're serious about becoming involved in networking,
take the 2.0. You'll find the basics are not that different. I recommend
Todd Lammle's CCNA book from Sybex. ISBN: 0782123813.

Hi guys,

Listen, I'm just getting started in all this. I'd like to know in detail
what are some of the things that I need to concentrate on as far as
obtaining my CCNA. I want to go ahead and take the CCNA 1.0 since I already
have some of the course material. I have a pretty good grasp of basic
networking, but I still would like to know if the July 31 deadline is a
feasable time to take this exam. If some of you could please share your
thoughts on what to look out for on the test, excellent study materials,
etc. that would be greatly appreciated.

goes through e0, s0, s1, etc. using IP. Hope this was helpful.

MCSE now wants to go Cisco....

2000-06-08 Thread jclark

Hi guys,

Listen, I'm just getting started in all this. I'd
like to know in detail what are some of the things that I need to concentrate on
as far as obtaining my CCNA. I want to go ahead and take the CCNA 1.0 since I
already have some of the course material. I have a pretty good grasp of basic
networking, but I still would like to know if the July 31 deadline is a feasable
time to take this exam. If some of you could please share your thoughts on what
to look out for on the test, excellent study materials, etc. that would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jay Clark, MCSE

Frame Relay limitations question

2000-06-08 Thread David Smith

Hi all,

I am doing some projections for growth in our companies FR cloud. I was
checking the limitations of routers when I came across this article. The
link is below.

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/125/26.html

The following is directly from the article. The last part is what I have a
question about. Does anybody know where the limitations per router platform
come from? The article seems to be missing some information about why the
2500 can only support 60 DLCIs, the 4000 can support 120, etc.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

DLCI Limitations
Subinterfaces count toward the practical upper limit of 230 Interface
Descriptor Blocks (IDBs). In other words, Cisco IOS currently doesn't
support more then 230 interfaces on the router (real or virtual) unless you
have an ISP Geeks Image which has 1024 IDBs. How many DLCIs can one
configure per physical interface? How many DLCIs can one configure in a
specific router? These two questions are frequently asked. Disappointingly,
the answer is, "it depends."
DLCI address space: Approximately 1000 DLCIs can be configured on a single
physical link, given a 10-bit address. Because certain DLCIs are reserved
(vendor-implementation-dependent), the maximum is about 1000. The range for
"cisco" LMI is 16-1007. The stated range for ANSI/ITU is 16-992. These are
the DLCIs carrying user-data.
LMI status update: The LMI protocol requires that all permanent virtual
circuit (PVC) status reports fit into a single packet and generally limits
the number of DLCIs to less than 800, depending on the maximum transmission
unit (MTU) size.
MTU= 4000 bytes   Max DLCIs app= (MTU bytes - 20 bytes)/ (5 bytes/DLCI)
(4000-20)/5 = 796
Default MTU on serial interfaces is 1500 bytes, yielding a maximum of 296
DLCIs per interface. Please note that these numbers vary slightly, depending
on the LMI type. The maximum DLCIs per router (not interface) platform
guideline, based on extrapolation from empirical data established on a Cisco
7000 router platform, are listed below:
*   Cisco 2500: 1 X T1/E1 link @ 60 DLCIs per interface = 60 total
*   Cisco 4000: 1 X T1/E1 link @ 120 DLCIs per interface = 120 total
*   Cisco 4500: 3 X T1/E1 links @ 120 DLCIs per interface = 360 total
*   Cisco 4700: 4 X T1/E1 links @ 120 DLCIs per interface = 480 total
*   Cisco 7000: 4 X T1/E1/T3/E3 links @ 120 DLCIs per interface = 480
total
*   Cisco 7200: 5 X T1/E1/T3/E3 links @ 120 DLCIs per interface = 600
total
*   Cisco 7500: 6 X T1/E1/T3/E3 links @ 120 DLCIs per interface = 720
total
Note: These numbers are guidelines only, and assume that all traffic is
fast-switched.

RE: CCIE (ScanMail Checked: Virus Free!)

2000-06-08 Thread Trevor Corness

The CCIE # started at 1025, so in generality:
  # of CCIE's = CCIE # - 1024 +/- probably 20 or 30

The number is assigned to the testing center in blocks, so it is not totally
contiguous.. It does give a good estimate though.

eg. I believe Joe's # 5917 (just confirmed, checked an email from him ;p)
so.. at his time of certification,

  x = 5917 - 1024 +/- 25
  x = 4893 +/- 25
  x = ~4868 - 4918, somewhere around that range.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the way I understand it.. the
+/- 20-30 is only a guess on my part for the "pool" of CCIE #'s not yet
assigned at other stations.

RE: Exam Outlines For CCNA 2.0

I'm not sure of what the difference would be between IPX and
Novell IPX, however Microsoft does have NWLink which is an
IPX clone that is 99% interchangeable with IPX. Bells and
whistles.
Perhaps Novell IPX refers to the complete Novell implementation,
and IPX refers to generic use of IPX in other settings. Certain products
like Ghost and Lab Expert (Image Blaster) commonly use IPX
protocols for multicasting. No Novell involved.

OSPF question...

2000-06-08 Thread McMasters, Eric

Okay I have been looking for this answer and I still can't find it, so I am
bringing my question to all of the OSPF guru's that reside on this list.

Here is what I want to know.
I know that you can run multiple routing processes on a single router, i.e.
router ospf 1 and router ospf 2
Now will the networks that are configured under the each of these processes
know about networks in the other process, without redistributing?
Will they maintain separate routing tables?
If so, will all the routes be displayed when issuing the "show ip route"
command?

I just want to know if the networks that are configured under each process
will be logically separated on the router, or will they share the same
routing table? I'm getting frustrated, since I can't find the answer and
the 6 cups of coffee that I've already had aren't helping mattersI
appreciate any and all responses, and the time that you take in reading my
caffeine induced rants and raves..thank you!

Re: Eigrp convergence

>WHY?

It's misleading to say EIGRP is faster, unless you compare it to
other modern protocols with the same hello timer value. By default,
EIGRP has a 5 second hello timer while OSPF and ISIS have 10 seconds.
Obviously, a protocol with a shorter hello timer will detect and
respond faster to changes.

Once the hello timers are equated, will EIGRP, OSPF or ISIS be the
fairest in the land? The mirror on the wall says, "it depends."

Tony Li, who used to be one of the principal routing developers at
Cisco, and is coauthor of BGP, discussed this a while back in one of
the IETF mailing lists, and described EIGRP as faster to converge
when the alternate path was in an adjacent router or one that is one
hop away from the adjacent router, while OSPF is faster when finding
the new path will involve routers more than one or two hops away.

The reality is that in most circumstances, there is very difference
among the real-world convergence times of the three modern IGPs. If
you were doing something such as non-local-acknowledged SNA, which
has critical convergence time requirements, you'd have to tune the
timers of any of them.

EIGRP probably needs less resources, but needs more tuning for low
speed lines (below 56 Kbps, roughly)

RIP and IGRP, however, are significantly slower than the modern
protocols, principally because they (1) have to wait for periodic
updates and (2) usually have holddown timers that make them wait for
several updates.

There is a whole other issue, however, on what do we mean by
convergence? I'm in the process of writing an Internet Draft on some
definitions, especially for BGP.

Is convergence:

The time it takes a router to initialize its routing table on power on?
The time it takes to be able to route to a new (i.e., previously
unknown) destination, after it receives the update? After the change
causing the update occurs?
The time it takes after it recognizes the best route to a
destination is down, but it has an alternate route in local memory?
The time it takes after it recognizes the best route to a
destination is down, but it does not have an alternate route in local
memory?

simulator add-on, and it was a major aggravation. If you don't change your
O/S, then the Bosons are probably great. That just won't work for me.

Frame Relay Interworking with ATM

I have the following router config:

I'm trying to get frame relay to go across
the LS1010 ATM switch. I have a connect
statement on the 3640 Router "connect test

but I'm not sure how the frame relay portion
should be setup. Would you do a frame-relay route
statement which references the ATM card?
Would you use frame-relay map statements?
Any help would be most appreciated.

The CCIE # started at 1025, so in generality:
  # of CCIE's = CCIE # - 1024 +/- probably 20 or 30

The number is assigned to the testing center in blocks, so it is not totally
contiguous.. It does give a good estimate though.

eg. I believe Joe's # 5917 (just confirmed, checked an email from him ;p)
so.. at his time of certification,

  x = 5917 - 1024 +/- 25
  x = 4893 +/- 25
  x = ~4868 - 4918, somewhere around that range.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the way I understand it.. the
+/- 20-30 is only a guess on my part for the "pool" of CCIE #'s not yet
assigned at other stations.

Re: 3548xl and vlans

2000-06-08 Thread Lance Hubbard

Josh,

To assign a port on the 3548 to a vlan, get into config mode on the port in
question and invoke the "switchport access vlan" command. this will do the
trick.

Switch(config)#int fa 0/1
Switch(config-if)#switchport access vlan 100

Be sure to doublecheck the port moved to the new vlan by invoking the "show
vlan" command.

cheers,

Lance

Yes all routing processes maintain their own table.

The router will pick the best of all routes form any routing process, for
example if OSPF 1 has a route to 10.0.0.0 with a metric of 110 and OSPF 2
has a route to 10.0.0.0 with a metric of 120 then the only one you will see
is the route from OSPF 1.

I vote for taking the 2.0 also because it might be slightly more relevant.
Know OSI, IP subnetting, and access lists. That's not all that's on the
test, but if you know those three, you should cruise through it.

Understand the osi model well...

RE: ask for help on DHCP

Are you sure the released ip address is in the correct
subnet/network for that network segment.

I think the DHCP server should have a way to distinguish
which subnet/network the request comes from and send
a reply with appropriate ip address.

 No. This is deliberate.

>Will they maintain separate routing tables?

This is subtle. The OSPF processes will maintain separate
topological databases, but there is only one main routing table.

Let's say OSPF #1 produces an intra-area route 192.0.2.0/24 with
metric 100, while OSPF#2 produces an intra-area route 192.0.2.0/24
with metric 50. Also, Let's say OSPF #1 produces an inter-area
route 192.0.3.0/24 with metric 10, while OSPF#2 produces an
intra-area route 192.0.3.0/24 with metric 50. Remember that
intra-area routes are always preferred to inter-area.

The routing table will install the OSPF #1 route to 192.0.2.0/24
and the OSPF#2 route to 192.0.3.0/24. In the main routing table
display, they will both simply show with source code "O". I think,
but would have to verify, that "show ip route 192.0.2.0/24" would
reveal the process that generated the route.

Re: OSPF question...

2000-06-08 Thread James Xie

First of all, no matter how many OSPF routing processes running on
the router, there is only one IP routing table. If you understand the
differenece
between routed and routing protocols, the question is clear.Routed protocols
like IP uses only one routing table to foward traffic. If for a single
routed protocol
there are multiple routing table, which one IP need to use?

OSPF processes keep seperate topology and adjacency databases.
And based on those databases, use routing algorithm inject routing entries into
the routing table.

Different processes the same router run in the ship-in-the-night
mode. Everything is separated. Redistribution is required to pass
external routes between 2 processes.

Don't waste the 7th cup of cokee. Give it to me.

I never heard about people talking about how to understand behaviors of
programmed devices like routers etc. My experience is to understand
them from the programmer's point of view. You got to know how those
cisco software engineers implement protocols and standards. There are
a lot common senses can be used if you have ever worked as a system/
software engineer for a couple years.

Telnet is an application using tcp port 23.
Ping is another application using icmp (a special ip protocol), neither TCP
nor UDP is
involved. Ping uses ICMP packet type echo.

No, you have to open ICMP echo and echo-reply for ping to work.

I think you are talking about layer 3 multicast. A special range of ip address
224.0.0.0-239.0.0.0 are reserved for IP multicasting. For example, any devices
configured with 224.0.0.5 are OSPF desinated routers. If you want to send some
IP packets to those routers only, you can address the packet to that address.
Multicast is also used for multimedia traffic. You can even use it across the
Internet (MBONE). Multicast can be staticaly/dynaimcally routed. Popular
dynamic
routing protocols including IGMP, CGMP, PIM etc. AppleTalk also supports
multicasting.

Re: EIGRP contiguous AS

2000-06-08 Thread jeongwoo park

Kenney, yes it is pretty cool stuff to use tunnel.
As an alternative, I was wondering if it would work fine using BGP.
I know that configuration of BGP is pretty complex.
I guess it will work since it deals with different AS’s and running
different protocols(in this case, they are EIGRP and IGRP)
If I am wrong, please correct me.

Using a tunnel is a good way to route non-routeable network ranges over the
routeable internet - or a WAN. Say you are using a provider to connect 50
sites all via point-to-point T1's. Becasue the sun shines, they are going
to charge you $1 Mil for routeable address space. You don't offer internet
access to the sites so you don't need them. So you decide to use private
address space for each location. The only routeable IPs you have are on the
serial interfaces. In order for each location to "know" about each other
location, you create tunnel interfaces as I have below, and run eigrp over
them. Now a packet comes into the router for destination 172.16.1.50. The
router does a route table lookup and finds the next-hop to be 172.16.1.2 -
which is out interface tunnel 0. The router takes the packet, throws some
IP headers on it ( the tunnel source and tunnel destination ), and shoots it
to the tunnel destination. The destination gets it, strips off the headers,
and routes it according to it's route table. Voila - no routeable
addresses. Pretty cool stuff if you ask me. May be sloppy but works.

Re: OSPF question...

2000-06-08 Thread Tom Pruneau

Greetings Eric

On a router (lets call it router A) , if you have seperate OSPF processes;
lets say process 1 and process 2
They will NOT be mixed on router A. Router A will have two seperate OSPF
tables. When you do a show ip route you should see both but I suspect the
routes from process 1 will have a 1 in front of them somewhere and the ones
from process 2 will have a 2 in front of them somewhere.

You were correct in saying that the only way to get the routes from process
1 into process 2 (or vice versa) is to redistribute them.

Keep in mind though that that separation only happens on router A

lets say router A has three interfaces s1 s2 s3

s1 is connected to router B
s2 is connected to router C
s3 is connected to router D

s1 is listed in its network statement (on router A) under process 1
s2 and s3 are listed under process 2.

Usually when you have multiple processes its for a reason, your intent is
to somehow segregate your network.

Lets say Routers B and C are also running process 2

If you were to accidentally hook router A s1 to the router B or C
connection you would then effectively mix the routes from the 2 processes.

Advertisements pay no attention to the process number. All they care about
is if you're a neighbor and your password is correct (and your timer values
are the same).

hope that helps

Tom

New CCNP

2000-06-08 Thread Kevin Wigle

Dear Group,

As many of you might be aware, I put myself on a schedule to upgrade my
certification.

For about 2 and a half months now I've taken the CMTD, CLSC, ACRC and now
the Support 2.0 exam.

So now I'm a CCNP!

I hesitated somewhat to take the new Support 2.0 as I had studied materials
for the CIT. But after carefully reviewing some of the comments on this
list I chose to take a chance.

I used the following materials to prepare for CIT/Support:

CIT - Exam Cram by Matthew Luallen
Read cover to cover. More than the title suggests. Lots of details on what
is going on, not just memorization.

CIT - Cisco Press
Read cover to cover as this is the reference!

CIT - CCNP Study Guide , Syngress.
Read half the book, used the supplied test on the CD.

CIT - CCNP Exam Notes by Kevin Hales/Todd Lammle
Sorry, didn't even crack this one open. (I think I over-reacted to how hard
everyone was saying this exam was and I bought too many books).

Boson CIT 1 exam
Gets you in the swing of things.

CCO - CCIE sample questions

CertificationZone - Sample Test

The Section Analysis for the exam from my score report is:

Connectionless Models
HDLC
IOS backups
Troubleshooting

Truthfully, I just completed the exam - like 2 hours ago and I can't make
hide n'or hare (???) of where HDLC and IOS backups were..

My experience is a bit different than a previous poster's. It was mentioned
that there were between 60 and xxx (forget what) questions with a passing
score that was also variable.

Pass is 692 out of the range 300-1000.

I had 61 questions. That number was told to me at the beginning and that's
what I got. So I don't think the exam is adaptive from that viewpoint.

And... the most difficult thing was trying to figure out just what
the hell was being asked. But we've heard that many times for other tests.
However, the answers are very good, not many obvious gimme's at all.

And most of all thanks to Groupstudy The wealth of information and people
willing to share that info cannot have a value placed on it. This group is
incredible.

Haven't finished yet, will now take a stab at completing the CCDP before
swearing off books for the summer. Might take the FRS 2.0 when it goes live
to make myself a full version 2.0 CCNP/CCDP.

2000-06-08 Thread jawad skalli

Hi guys,
I totally agree with everybody who stayed on hold for more than an hour to
register for the FRS 2.0. I, personally, waited for two hours on hold,
after, first calling at 7:01 , central time, and find them closed, and
second, i called at 7:04 and told to hold.
Then, when i hang up and called again, they told me that they had some
problems with the queuing of the calls.
But, i guess that when you are paying for an exam you get through in two
minutes and everything is working fine.
I am telling you guys something is weird here.

this is strictly theological piccadillo but it's the 'Prayer of St.
Francis.' disclaimer- Contrary to popular belief, we RCs worship
neither the saints nor the pope, so semantical inaccuracies like this
tend to make some of us a little edgy.
Seems appropriate that we can add hard work and study to a virtuous,
principled life prayer... the only thing we can't really claim is the
Franciscan vow of 'poverty, chastity, and obedience', especially if
we're studying for a certification that will allow us to earn
$120K/yearly and above.

CCNP study partner(s)

2000-06-08 Thread Joe Lam

I'm looking for someone to study with through the CCNP program. I am not a
list member, so please respond directly back to this e-mail address.

I am scheduled to take ACRC tomorrow (unless I chicken out and reschedule
to next week). It's my second shot at ACRC, so I hope to fare better this
time around. I plan on tackling CIT before the July 31st deadline, and
pursue the rest of the requirements via CCNP 2.0.

I'd like to hear from anyone on a similar track. I am in the Northern VA
area, and can be flexible in meeting places/times.

Thanks,

Joe

RE: PIX Firewall and 2509 Access Router

2000-06-08 Thread Bartlett, DS1

I have fixed my problem What I found was my default gateway on my 2509 was
the E0 port. When I installed the firewall, Cisco says to point default
gateway's internal to the PIX to the inside port address, which I did.
However I did not remove the line ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 ethernet 0 when I
removed this configuration, all worked well, and now proper connections are
restored.

Thank you to all who offered help.

Subject:PIX Firewall and 2509 Access Router

I have a 2509 access router with 8 modems attached. This past
weekend I
installed a PIX 515. Now when users dial-in they receive very slow
connections. I tried to ping various Internet hosts and found that
60-80%
packet loss occurred. I turned on

Debug ip icmp

Ran a trace to my server at home and received this message

dst (10.100.7.0) port unreachable rcv from X.X.X.190 (home server).

10.100.7.0 is the IP of my E0 interface on the 2509 and it further
says

sent to 10.100.1.0 --> which is the IP of my inside server.

Enlightenment would be greatly appreciated. I have some very angry
users
who are on the road, including my big boss, an Admiral in the US
Navy.

Thanx all

RE: CCNA badge

2000-06-08 Thread gorer

You can only download the logo if you're a ccna...from the certifications
page (see link below), click on "Tracking System" on the left side of the
page. You'll need your cert number, etc to get in from there.

Re: CCNA badge

2000-06-08 Thread Dale Holmes

You have to login to the Tracking site and get the log from there...

www.galton.com

Choose the "Cert Progress" button, and from there you will see the "Get
Logo" button about one third of the way down the page...

I hope this helps.

Ahhh Carbon Paper, I remember it well. And typewriter erasers with little metal
templates that allowed you to erase just one letter (sometimes) not to mention
white out. Perhaps some of the "good-old-days" weren't so good!

Hey, thanks for the heads-up !

Try here. Watch wrap. You'll also have to sign up, but it /is/
free and I've been on there for a while without attracting
any spam, so it's safe too...

If the link doesn't work, go to the Technology section and
search for Ethernet, duh... ;-)
