BAY stack Switches and Cisco 4006 issue - NB!! [7:1067]

2001-04-18 Thread Andrew Larkins

Hi all,

A client of ours want to implement the Cisco 4006 as a concentration point
with layer 3 capabilities. This is not a problem. What he wants to do
however is to have each BAY switch stack with 2x 1 gig connections as a sort
of " Etherchannel" - an effective single 2 gig connection. Now I know that
Etherchannel is a Cisco proprietary protocol, but is it compatible with a
similar BAY standardmy guess is that it is not. If we go ahead with this
implementation then the Cisco switch will see one of the two gig connections
as being redundant and disable it with spanning tree.

Is there a work around for this, apart from selling some Cisco switches as
well !!???

Re: Change EIGRP routing path [7:1074]

2001-04-18 Thread Bulent Sahin

You can do it by changing the parameters Bandwith, Delay or both, but
changing only one of this parameters is a easier and simplier way. I use
delay, because the delay of a multihop route is the sum of the delays of the
every hop to the route, but the bandwith of a multihop route is the minimum
bandwith of the every hop to the route, so using delay you have a better
control on route selection.

For example you choose using delay. You should decrease total delay of the
route R1 to R3 via R2 and R4. You can decrease the delay of R2-R3 or R3-R4
or both. You have 6 diferrent solutions.

But when you choose Bandwith, you should increase all of the bandwith
parameters of the links(R1-R2, R2-R4 and R3-R4). You have only one solution.

And delay has a lesser effect on metric calculation then bandwith. So you
can adjust feasible successors easily.

Hi

I don't know about a Gigabit link but I tried
a trunking between BayStacks 250T and a Cisco5005
It doesn't work. It seems that what BayNetwokrs understands with trunking
is Etherchanel for Cisco. ANyway there are some problems with STP
because Cisco maintains one STP machine per VLAN but Bays have one STP
machine
for the whole switch.

Take care

DoS, or denial of service, is generally used to describe (strictly)
the condition that occurs when an attacker uses methods to cut your
connection off from the world. SYN flooding is the most common
example. A DDoS, or distributed denial of service describes a
coordinated attack by many (often more than several hundred) hosts
against the target. What makes a DDoS special is that generally
all of these hosts are acting under the control of one master to
target you. A good example of DDoS software is stacheldracht. (or
is it stacheldraht??? I can't spell)

Anyway, the Internet is full of good information on this topic...

on the list about the test, but not a whole lot. Last I looked at the
blueprint, the lab wasn't supposed to be completed until May 1, so it
might be a while before good info is available.

Personally, my goal is the CCIE - Security, so any and all discussion
is a benefit, but I think we are the minority here. I also get the
feeling that we'll have to be pretty familiar with all of the R/S topic
matter anyway, but I might be wrong.

DDoS == Distributed Denial Of Service
DoS == Denial of Service

DDoS usually occurs when a hacker has trojanned a lot of hosts all around
the universities er.. internet. They run a special zombied trojan
which will attack when the master signals for it. So, the DoS comes from a
multitude of places as opposed to one guy who may or may not have spoofed
his IP. (usually spoofed).

DoS is just a one man show usually. In general, the DoS has to work on
some resource exhaustion mechanism that is efficient for the
attacker. Most attackers usually do not have access to the raw bandwidth
needed to take down hosts with access to big pipes. A DDoS somewhat avoids
this (or can use the same methodology), just they have more firepower now.

Default installed Linux boxes, unfortunately, are usually subject to being
'trojanned' and turned into a zombie. (using your typical kiddie script,
hacking into the box, planting the trojan, and going).

The zombies need to communicate with their masters, so depending on which
DDoS we are talking about, you can sometimes catch their communication. Or
you can just portscan your own hosts to check. But that might not catch
Trinoo (communicates through ICMP types 0, 8).

RE: BAY stack Switches and Cisco 4006 issue - NB!! [7:1067]

2001-04-18 Thread Rose, Jim - Contractor

We have a hybred network and have sucessfully Etherchanneled a Foundry BI
with a Cisco 5505 on two Gigabit uplinks.

1st, your Cisco device must do 802.1q. And the other device should be able
to adapt to Multiple instance of Spanning Tree.

Is there a work around for this, apart from selling some Cisco switches as
well !!???

Thanks in advance

RE: CCIE Written Books - Opinions plz [7:1073]

2001-04-18 Thread Chuck Larrieu

At the risk of becoming flame bait, let me offer that there are appropriate
tools for appropriate tasks.

I am not so sure that Caslow, Perlman, or Halabi are the best way to spend
one's time preparing specifically for the CCIE written. I am not so sure
that reading RFC's is the best preparation for the written either.

The written is geared towards examination of protocol behaviour. There are
lots of questions that are based on an understanding of how various
protocols function. OSI comes into play in that it forms a basis for
referencing those operations.

I took the written shortly after taking the CID exam. My recollection is
that there was more than just a coincidental similarity between the two.

My own advice is use the blueprint on CCO as your basis for forming your
reading list. But don't get carried away thinking you need to read every
book referenced there. Some are more appropriate for lab preparation. Some
are interesting reading, but short on information you will find useful in
either the written or the lab.

Hello,

I have configured my two routers with AUX back to back:

ip address 192.168.10.1 255.255.255.0
  encapsulation ppp
  set PPP as encapsulation
  async dynamic routing
  async mode dedicatedu
!
line aux 0
  modem InOut
  transport input all
  rxspeed 38400
  txspeed 38400
  flowcontrol hardware

the opposite router is the same except ip address in the same segment.

But I only can configure with static routes. Does any body know how to
enable dynamic routing (eigrp, rip, etc) in this back to back..?

trunking [7:1098]

2001-04-18 Thread Plantier, William (Spencer)

We have a 3512 switching dot1q trunking to a 5500. The 3512 has a linux
server attached to the 3512 on a vlan. We have another linux server attached
to the 5500 on the same vlan. The linux server on then 5500 works fine
until the 3512 linux server comes up and then we lose connectivity to 5500
linux server. We cannot ping either box when they are both connected. In a
quick fix we took off the trunking and put both gig port on the same vlan
and now it works fine. Any thoughts why trunking causes a problem.

In defence of Sean Young (could it be the real one! :) Juniper has taken a
different approach with it's written exam. Many people will agree that
there is a certain disparity in difficulty between the CCIE entrance exam
and it's lab which is likely by design. Juniper has endevoured to create a
written test that is relatively similar in difficulty to it's corresponding
lab. Hence, one should find Juniper written tougher than Cisco's because
the two exams had differing design goals.

I should caveat this with the fact that I do work for Juniper although I
haven't seen our written test (too shook up from CCIE to get the nerve to go
down a similar road again :)

Re: CCIE Written Books - Opinions plz [7:1073]

2001-04-18 Thread Circusnuts

I'm surprised to hear negatives on the Exam Crams. I used all 4 books for
the CCNP 2.0 & found them no less accurate than the Cisco Press books. Of
course you always need to stay focused on what the "Cisco" objectives are,
but as far as less story telling & more facts... I think the Exam Crams are
nicely put together.

Hi Phil,

Agree with what you write about the Crams for the NP's. Albert was asking
about the CCIE Cram and I was just relaying what I had seen from Amazon.
Have also heard about the same 'error' comment from a few people who had
passed the CCIE and owned the Cram book.

2001-04-18 Thread Kevin Wigle

also, I would hazard an opinion that since CCIE pre-dates all the CCNx and
CCDx, that the written was designed for the level that CCDP/CCNP currently
tests.

I have heard on this list that many have thought that a CCDP/CCNP should be
exempt the CCIE written because the knowledge set is so similar.

However, many fail the CCIE written with such lofty initials..

OSPF Stub area question [7:1112]

2001-04-18 Thread Coleman, Jason

Consider the following scenario:

Two HQ routers that have 2 sites each connected to them over frame relay
point-to-point sub-interfaces.
The two HQ routers are on the same LAN. These Ethernet ports are in Area 0.

The HQ1 WAN links and their sites are in Area 1, and the HQ2 WAN links and
their sites are in Area 2.
Both Area 1 and Area 2 are setup to be totally stubby areas.

When looking at the routing table for a remote site connected to HQ1, will
you see only a default route or will you see a default route and the routes
for the other remote site in Area 1?

I have been taken course and been led to believe that there should only be a
default route, but I read a white paper the other day, and it indicated that
you will see all Intra-area routes. To me, that means that I should see
routes to the other networks within my own area.

I am working on setting this up as well to see it work for myself, but
interested in any input.

Yes- I would do a quick study on all your lower line Cisco routers,
especially the 700. I thought it was enough to know the 1000's (Geeze- it
might have been the 800's) were the first full IOS routers. Of course- I
scored very low in this section :o) You should be familiar with the command
structure of the non IOS routers, like the 700.

Good Luck

Keep in mind that all routers within any type of ospf area must maintain
identical link state databases. Hence, you will see all intra area routes
and a default route toward intra-area and beyond.

I would look at the spannig tree state when the 2nd Linux server comes up.
I am not a Linux expert, but it sounds like it may be running spanning tree

to the 5500 on the same vlan.

Thanks

CiscoSecure ACS [7:1125]

2001-04-18 Thread Ken Yeo

Anyone has experience with CiscoSecure ACS?

I have a question:

Under Network Configuration/Network Access Server Ip address, which
internet's ip address you use for the field? I tried loopback, and all
physical interfaces. Only the interface sending packet back to ACS server
work.

There must be a better way, if not there will be no redundancy, what if the
link goes down?

Please advice,

Thanks,
Ken

Load Balance and Fault Redundancy [7:1127]

One of our customers asks for load balance and fault redundancy. They have a

Re: OSPF Stub area question [7:1112]

2001-04-18 Thread John Neiberger

As I understand it:

For any given area, all routers with interfaces in that area will have
identical link state databases; therefore, their routing tables would
contain entries for routes within the area.

Intra-area updates are type 1 and 2 LSAs. Inter-area updates are type
3 and 4. Updates from external AS are LSA type 5. A stubby area will
not accept type 5 LSAs (from ASBRs) but will accept all others; in place
of the type 5 LSAs the ABR will advertise a default route pointing to
the ASBR.

A totally stubby area will not accept types 3, 4, or 5. It will accept
types 1 and 2, so it will have full knowledge of intra-area routes, but
it will have a default for all routes outside of its area.

I hope that makes sense, my explainer isn't working very well at the
moment.

John

>>> "Coleman, Jason"  4/18/01 11:47:43 AM >>>
Consider the following scenario:

Two HQ routers that have 2 sites each connected to them over frame
relay
point-to-point sub-interfaces.
The two HQ routers are on the same LAN. These Ethernet ports are in
Area 0.

The HQ1 WAN links and their sites are in Area 1, and the HQ2 WAN links
and
their sites are in Area 2.
Both Area 1 and Area 2 are setup to be totally stubby areas.

When looking at the routing table for a remote site connected to HQ1,
will
you see only a default route or will you see a default route and the
routes
for the other remote site in Area 1?

I have been taken course and been led to believe that there should only
be a
default route, but I read a white paper the other day, and it indicated
that
you will see all Intra-area routes. To me, that means that I should
see
routes to the other networks within my own area.

I am working on setting this up as well to see it work for myself, but
interested in any input.

BGP Dampening, What is a flap? [7:1128]

2001-04-18 Thread Tom Pruneau

Greetings All

I am in the process of writing a BGP class, at present I am specifically
working on a section covering dampening.

My question is "what is a flap"

The two possible answers are:

Answer one
A flap is whenever path information changes for a route. By this definition
if a route goes away, that would be a flap. When the route comes back, that
would be another flap.
So a route going away then coming back would be 2 flaps.

Answer two
A flap is a route transition from up to down back to up. So a route going
away then coming back would count as one flap.

I am mucking with this in my lab and the lab would seem to indicate that
answer two is the correct one, but when I read the Sam Halabi copyright
1997 internet routing architectures book, page 440 and 441 it says the
answer is Answer one.

I am at best confused

Any help?

watch the wrap!

Enable TACACS to Use a Specific IP Address
You can designate a fixed source IP address for all outgoing TACACS packets.
The feature enables TACACS to use the IP address of a specified interface
for all outgoing TACACS packets. This is especially useful if the router has
many interfaces, and you want to make sure that all TACACS packets from a
particular router have the same IP address.

Command: ip tacacs source-interface subinterface-name

It was on the list...just one of the routers that are REALLY old and he only
read about. This was several years ago (5+ I think) & he had never heard of
nor seen this router besides reading that it existed. Simple. Just like he
hadn't spent time on the 700 series in the original post below. I didn't
say they strayed from the equipment list...

RE: CCNP BOOKS [7:1130]

2001-04-18 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

Suranjith,

You can click on my CCNP link below, and see what I used for CCNA 2.0, BCRAN
and BCMSN.

As for the order, you need to take the CCNA first.

After that, it's kind of your own choice, however, CIT should probably be
the last, since it's more or less a smaller summary of all the other exams.

I think most people do the BSCN, BCMSN, BCRAN and then CIT - but I waited
with the BSCN until now because there wasn't really any good reading
material out there when I finished my CCNA 2.0.

Hth and happy studies,

Re: BGP Dampening, What is a flap? [7:1128]

2001-04-18 Thread John Neiberger

A flap occurs when a router receives an advertisement for a prefix and
then subsequently receives a "withdraw" update. That is one flap. If
it comes up and goes back down again, that is two flaps total.

At least, that's how I remember it. Someone please correct me if I'm
wrong.

Regards,
John

My vote would be #2. Simply based on the definition of the verb 'flap':
"To
wave ... up *and* down." [emphasis added]

Cisco 5008 and TFTP [7:1137]

2001-04-18 Thread Moe Tavakoli

When trying to get a new image on the 5008 I kept getting:

TFTP Client : erroe code 4: Invalid TFTP File Transfer Mode

I tried everything I could on the 5008. I checked settings on the Cisco
TFTP server. Searched the Cisco site and the closest thing was for another
platform. The recommendation was to switch from ASCII mode to BIN mode on
the server. Well that is not an option (atleast one that i can see.)
So I went online and found this little 56KB TFTP server, which worked just
fine (attached.)
Hope this helps... any thoughts?

Fw: CCIE Written Books - Opinions plz [7:1073]

2001-04-18 Thread Circusnuts

If you are considering the All-In-One Study Guide, make sure you get a 2nd
or 3rd (if they have a 3rd) release. The first book had about an inch tall
pages worth of errata. It was the first of such books to the presses, I
would venture to say. Don't be fooled, passing the CCIE written is not 50%
of the way to being a CCIE. You'd want to make sure you've more than just
books in your corner.

 All the best !!!

RE: CCIE Written Books - Opinions plz [7:1073]

2001-04-18 Thread Stephen Skinner

or alternativly ,

you could just bend down kiss your ass(and money) good bye and try sitting
it COLD like me.(i mean no offence ...i`m just kidding)

but i find that preparing for each exam is different , also they way each
person does it is different..

ONE thing to remember ALL cisco exams questions come from a pool of about
500 these are taken from either the offical course notes..or (in the
case of the CCIE) taken from the blueprint (as correctly pointed out by my
learnED friend) and also from info FREELY availible from the cisco web
site

This is cisco`s MOST prised posession and they WILL NOT give it to you
without a FIGHT...so they make it hard.if they didn`t want it to be
as valuable as it is , there would be a cisco CCIE offical course... (not to
say all the other cred`s are crap ofcourse it is just that this is the
big one ..TYSON v ALI.
and if you want it you are going to have to go out of your way to get it
..which i beleive is the right attitiude nopoint me getting it
...spending 10k most of 2 yrs study ...and then it is deemed as
worthless.so i will go the extra mile...spend the extra timeand try
my damdist?? to get it .

ASK yourself a question what should a CCIE know??...then ask
yourself How can i test this ??..armed with this knowledge and a LOT
of help from the group you will be fine.

I hope i haven`t annoyed to many people with this ,but it IS as hard as they
say ,it IS worth it ,and you WILL have to work harder than ever
beforeBUT it IS possible.there are people here who`ve proved it
possible..see there goal focus...and youmeall of us will
get there...one day..

this is a self-pep aswell as list-pep talk...because i`m going to fail
miserably on saturday and will just keep coming back for more...

Cheers

Others gave good answers to the foremer question, so I'll handle the
latter. Assuming you meant "Martian networks", they're IP (or other)
addresses that are obviously incorrect given the context. Common
examples are:

- Multicast source address.
- RFC 1918 address in packets received from the Internet.
- Source address allocated to you in packets received from the Internet.
- Destination address neither your own nor multicast in packets received
  from the Internet.
- Source or destination address 127.0.0.1 in packets received on any
  interface except a loopback.

Will you need to run BGP? :-) Just kidding...

Seriously, what kind of configuration are you talking about? Do you
want to connect a modem to the AUX port that will dial out to your ISP?
Do you want it to be able to pass through DHCP-assigned addresses to a
PC? Is this for a single PC or do you have multiple users? Do you need
NAT/PAT?

We need more information before we can give you an intelligent answer.

Re: BGP Dampening, What is a flap? [7:1128]

2001-04-18 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

I think from BGP's point of view a flap is a withdrawal and announcement of
a routing prefix. Howard Berkowitz will know for sure. Did you check his
BGP papers at http://www.certificationzone.com. Also there's a good paper
here:

http://www.ripe.net/ripe/docs/ripe-178.html

Cisco often uses the word "flapping" in a generic sense for a route or
interface going up and down repeatedly. That could be cause for some
confusion. In your class, you might want to be clear about whether you are
using the term generically or with reference to parameters to route
dampening commands.

Good luck. Let us know what you find out for sure! Thanks.

Can you see the MAC addresses on each switch? can you see ARP entries on
any attached devices?

What VLAN permissioning do you have on the trunks?

can you post configs?

I, for one, would love to see that checklist. Things like that help
people like me to focus and not wander too much in our studies. I've
been known to spend way too much time on the wrong topics (like ip

John

>>> "EA Louie"  4/18/01 4:14:17 PM >>>
Steve - I just put together a "checklist" (motivated by an off-line
conversation with Chuck and by the first meeting with the San Diego
Study
Group-"hey dudes! I know you're lurking out there!") from the R/S
blueprint
that I'd be willing to share with you and the rest of the list.
Warning:
the checklist is still in evolution, you can use it to your best
advantage
and customize it, but I'm using it as both my self-assessment guide
(Excel)
and study guide (Word).

(In other words, it still has lots of gaps in it, but I'll be filling
those
in as my studying progresses)

What did you find?

If you have a CCO login, then
http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Support/PSP/index.pl?i=Technologies
Has some things of interest.

Also, if you have cisco config maker, you can do a mock up, then study the
configs and get a fairly decent idea of how to do things. Config maker does
not support tunnels, but other than that it is not half bad.

Re: Rack [7:1147]

2001-04-18 Thread Circusnuts

Sorry, but www.Blackbox.com would be my last stop... unless you are
independently wealthy :o)

For a few 2500's & a 1900 switch, I wouldn't think you'd need a rack. This
setup should fit easily anywhere. If are building a lab, a full "19 rack
wouldn't be a bad idea. This would allow for room to grow & keep resale. I
would recommend http://pacificcable.com/ & http://www.warehouse.com/. I
have friends who have purchased racks from Dave @ Pacific & they seemed very
please with the prices & service. I purchased a Belkin from Microwarehouse
(stand alone- no holes in the floor) & though I paid a bit more, am very
pleased with it.

It's a big purchase, but it's a decision as to what direction your lab is
moving in.

Good Luck !!!

expandable. There are other interface configurations
just like the rest of the 2500 series but none have
more than two routing interfaces.

There is no console port but there is a port called
PCBus (or something like that) that takes com 2 on a
pc. (conflicting stories as to whether one must
disable com 2 in BIOS or not) My PCBus interface is
administratively shutdown right now and I, for some
unknown to me reason, cannot get into privilaged mode
from either aux or ethernet (I type 'enable' and get a
'no password specified' message). During my quest to
solve this problem I have found virtually no
documentation from cisco about this little sucker, no
password reset instructions or anything. Called Cisco
and no help there really so I am just left to
tinkering until I can finally get access to it.

As far as an AccessPro vs. a 2500 series it comes down
to this. If you already know a bit about the
AccessPro you can pick them up used for under $200 and
add another fixed config router (with limited
capabilities and two interfaces) into your network.
With a 2500 or 1600 you get a fixed config router that
you can put larger IOS files onto for at least double
the price. Kind of a toss up if you dont have any exp
or documentation with the APs as documentation on the
2500s and 1600s is abundant.
