RE: BGP Dampening, What is a flap? [7:1128]

2001-04-20 Thread Stephen Skinner

Ok...it seems this topic is divided

1.GBP flaps/flapping
2.flapping in general

as regards 1 i don`t claim to know the answer but

i think a FAIR description of a flapping route/interface would be this

"the route has gone down and come back up again BEFORE the router has had
time to Re-converge/update routing tables"

with singular instances bieng a "flap" and multiple instances bieng
"flapping"

Would this be a fair overall description.if i am right then it`s a
small step to finding out why/how BGP does it

Thanks

  2. each time a route goes down and back up

The answer is probably number 2, as the orignal poster thought also,
since
just going down isn't really "flapping."

Well, maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how a route could go
down more than once without going up meanwhile, or up more than once
without going down meanwhile. So 1 and 2 are pretty much the same thing,
except perhaps for an extra up or down at either end. OTOH, it could be
that some BGP implementations send several WITHDRAWS in a row, or that a
single route going down may result in a given router getting several
withdraws (eg, redundant route reflectors, or multiple peers advertizing
the same prefix). Does someone know whether 1- BGP protocol definition
allows sending several WITHDRAWS to the same peer for a single up-down
transition and 2- routers apply the flap penalty repeatedly when they get a
WITHDRAW for a prefix already marked down?

NIS+ [7:1342]

2001-04-20 Thread Ramesh c

I am running NIS+ Root server (solaris 8) on a Intel(#Server1).I have
configured the NIS+ server and populated the tables.I have also intialised
the Client(#Machine1). When I try to login at client(#Machine1) as usr1 I
get a error message "unable to access home directory".But the same works on
the server(NIS+ server) where the usr1 was created (#Server1). I have
populated the AutoFs tables too.

my auto_master:
+auto_master
/net -hosts
/home auto_home

my auto_home:
+auto_home
usr1 server1:/export/home/usr1
usr2 server1:/export/home/usr2

I have also shared the above as NFS share.

I assume that NIS+ is working fine as I am able to ping the hosts mentioned
in host table of the Nis+ server. The Nsswitch.conf is the template of
nsswitch.nisplus on both client and server.

Why am I not able to login as usr1 on the client machine(Machine1)?I would
appreciate any help on this.

RE: Guides on designing IS-IS routing [7:1340]

2001-04-20 Thread McCallum, Robert

Just a side thread but since your sdh switches can only talk ISIS shouldn't
someone within your company be able to tell you this.

Seriously though look up the links below. BUY Jeff Doyles Routing TCP/IP
book although there are some flaws in it, it is the best there is out there
at the moment. Also Advanced IP Network Design by Cisco Press has a good
section on ISIS specifically on design.

You should be looking nowadays into the ISIS MultiArea Support document URL
below :-

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios120/120newft/120
t/120t5/ismarea.htm#xtocid299080

watch the word wrap.

This entails the way forward that most companies should be following
nowadays. It is very useful and although it states in the document that you
can have up to 27 different level-1 areas hanging of 1 router I have still
to prove this. I have heard rumours that at around the 9 different areas
the router starts to creak but I think this must have something to do with
the router type and memory that the person tried the test on. Also remember
that to enable ISIS on a Cisco router you have to buy the Enterprise
software which in turn in most routers then requires a memory upgrade. If
you require any other info or are unclear on anything then just give us a
shout. Unfortunately I am designing and configuring a network which uses
Marconi's EMOS systems and Marconi's ADMuxes etc etc. Oh the Joys. ;-

Speaking of, I'll be posting pics of my compost bin, router rack, and
firepit on my homepage tonight. These are my hobbies, I'm a homebody geek,
and I like my life as it is, thankyouverymuch *g*

One of these days I'll get a digital camera so it doesn't take me 4 steps
to
get photos up my website instead of just 1. A scanner would help, so at
least then I wouldn't have to go to the office (I think I've been in the
office twice this month, once to pick up parts, and today to scan the
photos). Hmm, so I guess I'm a frugal geek.

Oh, what a coincidence, Star Trek Voyager re-run tonight just used
dampening. Chakotay (sp?) said, "I'm detecting a dampening field around
that building." That settles it, Star Trek is made up babbling and usually
incorrect when it comes to technical terms (unlike Star Wars, you know), so
it must be damping *g*

forward delay). But I don't understand how "dia" can modify it? Based on
 what conditions?

From the show spantree output as shown below from 2900..and based on their
hello and max age how do I know its "dia"? What is the defination of dia?
If I have a network, how to determine the "dia" I should set for the dia??

 Cat29-L8-2sh spantree

Spanning tree 1 is executing the IEEE compatible Spanning Tree protocol
Bridge Identifier has priority 32768, address 00d0.58b0.6280
Configured hello time 2, max age 20, forward delay 15
Current root has priority 8192, address 00d0.063e.0c00

2)How to show the "last topology change" info in 2900 and 5500? The show

mine was 3 pages (CCNP with design NOC experience). None of the
 exhibitors
seemed to know what category the I (CCNP) belonged in of course I just
 said
"Networking" :o) In two instances exhibitors took my buddies resume not
mine, because I was not a CCNA. A third guy looked @ my resume said

Re: CCIE written bridge questions [7:1354]

2001-04-20 Thread John Neiberger

As I understand it:

A transparent bridge can NOT convert between canonical and
non-canonical bit ordering schemes.

And the keyword to configure translational bridging is, in fact,
source-bridge transparent . That makes no sense, but I read that
last night in a study guide. They made an effort to point out that same
issue.

 "lg" 4/20/01 7:39:04 AM
I think that this CCO site is wrong. Transparent bridge can convert
MAC
bits? And source-bridge shold be translational. Any agree with me?

If you use a recent 12.1(x) release you can pick whichever queueing
mechanism you like. My personal favorite is LLQ/CBWFQ. It allows more
granularity than the other options and it's very flexible.

IGRP on the 800 Series? [7:1365]

2001-04-20 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
Can anyone tell me why the 800 series routers do NOT run igrp? I would think
that besides the 700 series, all Cisco routers that run the Cisco ios should
be capable of running igrp? After all, since igrp is Cisco's very own
protocol, shouldn't Cisco give credit to Len Bosack on the 800 series too
:-)
Please advise.
Thank you.

A further inquiry into this -- if you folks don't mind. I know that one of

RE: How to become a CCSI [7:1362]

2001-04-20 Thread Gregory Macaulay

I would characterize your comments re: "must be able to teach" as two fold.
(1) Having a virtually intimate knowledge of the substantive material -- AND
MORE IMPORTANTLY -- being able to communicate that knowledge in an effective
manner. "Communicate . . . in an effective manner" of course includes a
number of elements. But the thrust of this is that your students must leave
the training session with more substantive knowledge than when they
arrived -- and must have had their interest in the subject matter increased
so that they continue to seek out more and more information on the topics
and they they can BEGIN to utilize this information in their daily working
lives.

Their certainly are more ways to say this -- but for now -- as a retired law
professor -- this is my 2 cents!!!

To everyone thinking about becoming a CCSI:

Yes, this is acceptable (I'm a CCSI--96045); however, there are some points
that should be made in addition to this:

* You need a training partner to sponsor you--this means, in all likelyhood,
that you will have to become an employee and you won't be making much money

* You will have to put your dues in...probably for a couple of years, before
you can go out on your own as a contract instructor.

* There are a ton of contract instructors (and employee instructors) for
classes like the ICND and BSCN. To really set yourself apart, you need to
specialize in something, like BCMSN, CATM, MCNS (or any of the new security
classes), etc.

Too many times students get these big puppy dog eyes when I tell them what
contractors can make in this business--most don't realize that to make that
kind of money, you will have to put in your dues for a couple of years AND
YOU WILL HAVE TO TRAVEL In this business, there are no easy roads to
networking heaven.

And even if you get your CCSI, you must be able to teach. All too often I
see a revolving door at various trainging partners. They bring someone in,
get them certified (maybe), and then the person fails miserably when it
comes to actually teaching the course content. I can remember one training
partner that I worked for that, over a period of two years, only had ONE
employee become a successful instructor, after going through more than 15
candidates. This is definitely a tough business and not for the faint of
heart. :-) You have to know the material cold. Cisco and the training
partner will closely monitor your evaluations after each class. Cisco
requires at least an average of 4.2 (out of 5) while many training parters
are much more strict (4.5 out ot 5). If students ask you questions and you
must continually tell them you'll have to look it up (and I've seen many
cases like this), then as an instructor, you won't survive in this business
very long.

Hope this helps...and good luck to those that are really serious about
trying this!!!

Enjoy!

Although it has lots of typos, I've heard good things about the Giles
study guide. Perhaps the later editions have a lot of those errors
fixed.

I have read the Sybex CCIE guide and wasn't really impressed at first.
In hindsight, I feel that it is a good study guide but not as thorough
as you'll need for the actual test. It's probably worth the money,
though, if you can find it on sale. Don't pay full price for it. Heck,
don't pay full price for any book!

I also recently bought the CCIE Exam Cram hoping to find a good study
guide without all the fluff included that I hate to wade through. So
far I'm pretty disappointed. It has a ridiculous number of typos and
errors so far. If I were to only use this as a guide I'd be in a lot of
trouble! However, it does appear to be a decent supplement to my other
study resources.

RE: What ISP do you recommend for BGP?? [7:1295]

2001-04-20 Thread Laurel Jones

I agree with Jason, it's going to be the "luck of the draw" as far as the
competency of the Engineering staff that you will have assigned to work with
you. We're turned up Internet connections with ATT, Sprint and Internap.
We were lucky and all three were pretty good as far as the BGP
configurations went. However, the latency and subsequent response time for
our E-commerce users in different parts of the country varied widely between
the three with ATT being by far the worst. IMHO, you can work through most
of the initial configuration and setup issues but support and response time
is something you will live with for a long time. Consider these factors as
well.

It's all going to depend on the luck of the draw as to the engineer you get,
I think, at least to some degree (same is true of Cisco TAC, and they're the
top as far as support goes, IMHO). Mind you I've only turned up two BGP
connections, but Sprint was totally on the ball and great to work with.
WorldCom/UUNET was incompetent and I had to walk him through a number for
things like getting a default route advertised from them, what customer-only
routes mean, etc. (lucky for me I did them after Sprint). Check Boardwatch
for ISP costs and latency comparisons. WorldCom is directly connected to
nearly 50% of prefixes advertised. I believe Sprint has like 30%.

Re: How to become a CCSI [7:1362]

2001-04-20 Thread Richard Deal

Enjoy!

A further inquiry into this -- if you folks don't mind. I know that one
of
the requirment's to become a CCSI is to pass the CCNA exam with a score of
 919. Also, at the beginning of the exam, one of the screens inquires
whether you are taking this as an instructor or some such language.

My question is whether you can take the CCNA exam for instructor -- as one
of the CCSI prerequisites PRIOR TO actually being interviewed by a Cisco
 Training Partner.

It would seem that if one could -- it would be a selling point to
obtaining
an interview and possibly being selected for the job.

Alternatively, I would think that you could take the exam in a normal
manner -- achieve a 919 or better but still have to come back one more
time
to sit as a (prospective) instructor. Perhaps the pool of questions is
different (and possibly more difficult) for CCSIs!!!

ANy comments -- OR even better -- informed opinions??

Passed Support [7:1389]

2001-04-20 Thread Medley, Tim

I passed my support exam today. Thanks to all who have contributed by
answering my questions or asking my questions before I get a chance to (as
usually happens).

The exam was nowhere near as difficult as I imagined. Lots of ISDN as usual
(know your reference points and what functions at what OSI layer). Also
several fill in the blank questions, looking for commands; these were pretty
easy, except I'm pretty certain I missed one by typing in "sh isdn status"
instead of spelling out "show". The question specifically says to type out
the whole command, i'm just used to using abbrievated commands. Overall a
mildly fair test, for the most part follows the objectives.

I passed the HDLC with 100% although I didn't have any questions that
referenced HDLC. Go FIgure.

Do something she likes, and you get points. Do something

doing something she expects. Sorry, that's the way the game is played.
Got it? OK, here are some examples to help you guys understand.

Hello Gang - Hope some1 can help me on this. I am trying to upgrade ios.
Following is the detail when command copy is issued.

R2501#copy tftp flash
You cannot copy to Flash address space while running code from it.
The procedure below can be used to do the copy by reloading and
using the ROM-based bootstrap image.
Refer to the product documentation for a detailed description.
1. Save the system configuration (using 'write mem') if necessary.
2. Type in 'config term' to enter configuration mode.
3. Enter 'config 0x2101' to set the soft configuration register.
4. Enter '^Z' to exit configuration mode.
5. Enter 'reload' command to reload the system.
6. If you have a remote Telnet connection, terminate it, give the
router some time to reload, then reconnect.
7. Enter 'enabled' mode and execute the copy command.
8. Repeat steps 2 to 6 above, but this time in step 3, enter
   'config 0x2102'.

Followed above procedure. Returned with this error.

 Hello,

It sounds like you will be dealing with a regular 6500 with either a Sup1
or Sup2 that runs the usual CatOS like the Cat5k so nothing new there,
then you will get to deal with the MSFC daughter card that sits on the
Supervisor module. The MSFC does the Layer 3 stuff and that runs your
standard IOS, like the RSM for the Cat5k's. To get into the MSFC(the
router part) from the CatOS just type "session 15"(if the supervisor is in
the first slot)"session 16"(if the supervisor is in the second slot) and
 off you go...

Is it a 'standard IOS' switch, or does it operate similar to the Cat5k

RE: 6500 switch/router [7:1398]

2001-04-20 Thread Hornbeck, Timothy

It all depends on how the switch is ordered. You can order the COS(switch)
/ IOS(MSFC) version or the Native IOS version that runs one OS that controls
the Layer2 device and Layer3 device with one set of commands. These
commands are the same as the 2924/3548 IOS commands. With the Native IOS,
you can setup each port as a routed port. This is a very powerful feature
that Cisco has implemented. We have a couple of these Native IOS version

I just got wind of a possible assignment on a project using 6500's. Will my
experience with the Cat5k/5500 and IOS get me by with this?

If not, are there any specific 'gotchas' when working with this switch?

Is it a 'standard IOS' switch, or does it operate similar to the Cat5k
(different CLI for the switch vs. the RSM/LS-1010)?

thanks, all

Re: Cisco 2621 Aux port [7:1304]

2001-04-20 Thread David Chandler

How did you get this to work on the AUX port?

I agree with everything bellow except with the
"speed 115200".

Acording to my documentation "Cisco IOS Dial
Solutions" the max speed on the AUX port is
38400.

I have set this up on 2500s, 4500s 7500s.
Every time that I have tried to force the speed
greater than 38400, the line speed will cycle
through all the speeds 9600, 14400 etc and
not sync with the modem.

Is the AUX differnet for 2600's ?

If you repeatedly do a "sh line" what speed does
the AUX show up at? And, is it changing?

PS: I have been checking CCO for the specifics
on the 2600 AUX to confirm but no luck @tt

I am not sure I understand what you are saying?

Isn't the "BACKUP LOAD {enable-threshold | NEVER} {disable-threshold |
NEVER}" command specifying when the backup interface will be kicked in, and
dropped? It has been a while but looking through the docs again it seems
that the BRI will kick in at 70% util (input or output 5 minute moving
average). It will remain up until the COMBINED utilization of the two
(input or output 5 minute moving average) drops bellow 30% of the S1/0
bandwidth.

I donn't see how the backup delay really has anything to do with the
"loadsharing" issue?

As I write this I find that I have some questions?
### It has been a while, and the Docs are a little vague###

1. Can either the input or output utilization start the backup?
2. Once the backup is enabled do BOTH the input and output utilizations have
to be bellow the disable-threshold to drop the backup.

EIGRP as his IGP since OSPF won't load balance across two "unequal"

The config. on his serial I believe would be:

  int S1/0
  ip address x.x.x.x x.x.x.x
  no ip redirects
  no ip directed-broadcast
  no ip proxy-arp
  encapsulation ppp
  no ip route-cache distributed

  backup int BRI1/0
  backup load 70 40

Are there any other snags or problems I may run into with this setup?
  Thanks in advance.

Hmm, you configured it as a serial interface, wo I assume that the whole
bandwidth of your T1 goes to a single destination (eg, ISP router port).
You want to load-balance 30% (100% - 70% load threshold needed for ISDN
to kick in) of your T1's bandwidth, which is about 450 Kbits/sec., with
1 ISDN channel, which will give you 1/7 at best of that bandwidth.

So the main snag, I would think, is that your ISDN won't help that much.
OTOH, it will come handy when your T1 gets acquainted with a backhoe,
which also appears to be one of your design goals, since you put in a
backup delay. Depending on how you rank these design goals, you'll get a
satisfied customer or an irate one.

I've got it...it's so-so. He actually covers EGP, saying it's sometimes
still used in military networks. He spends a lot of time on BGP which, if
you have Halabi (which you should if you're on this list ;-) you don't
really need, but he also spends some time on NAT and IP multicasting - which
is the section I've been reading since I got it on Tuesday. He also covers
IPv6, but I haven't read over that section yet. He also made the major
mistake of just asking fill-in-the-blank review questions at the end of each
chapter - and didn't provide any of the troubleshooting/case study questions
which made Vol.1 such a powerhouse book.

I'd say go to the bookstore, flip through it, see if there's anything you
need, but it's definitely not a must-have like his Vol. 1 is.

Re: Failed BSCN [7:1405]

2001-04-20 Thread Circusnuts

Yep- the test has slightly more BGP than OSPF. I found most all of the
questions from the exam to be straight out of the Cisco Press Routing book.
The Exam Cram Points you to OSPF, but was good for other parts of the exam.
I know it's depressing to break stride when trying to knock out the 4 exams.
Heck- I took the CCNA 3 times good ole' Chuck Larrieu had to give me the
pep talk more than once. Stay with the basics, Cisco BSCN possibly the
www.Boson.com exams. They're harder than the real thing. I failed every
Boson exam, but sailed through the real CCNP exams (failing the Boson's
helped me a lot). Of course- Boson too favors OSPF more than BGP. Don't
forget hitting the other topics again too. I know a couple of years back, I
failed the CCNA because of Security (access-lists). I studied a week took
it again, getting a 100% in Security... only to fail due to other sections.

You can do it, it's just harder sometimes if you have not worked with the
protocols or maybe misjudged the direction of the study material

You can do it !!!

Pix to Pix Interface, nat 0 traffic? [7:1429]

2001-04-20 Thread Michael Snyder

Ok, need some help talking to group of hosts on a lower security interface
from a higher one.

For example.

I have a fileserver on 192.168.200.0/24 on pix interface 3 security100. I
want to be able to speak at will to another fileserver 192.168.100.0/24 on
pix interface 2 security 90. The name of int 3 security 100 is inside, and
the name of the int 2 security 90 is companynet.

I setup an access list, used it with nat (inside) 0. The access list gets
hits, but the I can't ping thru to the lower security subnet. What am I
doing wrong?

nameif ethernet2 comanynet security90
nameif ethernet3 inside security100

access-list inside2comany permit ip 192.168.200.0 255.255.255.0
192.168.100.0 255.255.255.0

nat (inside) 0 access-list inside2comany

route inside 192.168.200.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.100.1

conduit permit icmp any any

Thanks in advance,

Michael Snyder

CCDA EXAM TOMORROW [7:1432]

2001-04-20 Thread Aaron Vose

Hey, i have the "Designing Cisco Networks" (DCN) book, and i've read
through it. Then i took the practice exam in the back of the book, and
passes it with an 85%.. I'm signed up the the test tomorrow, but i'm REALLY
worried about it. It's just that i spent FOREVER practiceing and studying
for the CCNA, and when i took that test, i passed, but just slightly. It's
just that this book makes the CCDA out to be REALLY easy. I'm expecting to
go into the test, and come out bomming it, and loosing the 100$ i paid for
it. Bah, oh well. I suppose if i passed the CCNA, and the practice exam, i
can pass the CCDA... Hmm, if i weren't 17, and i had a job, failing might
not be such a big deal, but how it is, saving allowences takes for freakin
ever. Anyways, I want to tell you all, i don't like the DCN book, and i
find it REALLY lacking. I'll tell you what happens tomorrow afternoon.
Peace out guys.

Cisco XXXX series router? [7:1433]

2001-04-20 Thread Aaron Vose

Hey all, i haven't taken the CCDA test that i mentioned earlier yet,
but i did have a question for all the Gurus about a 1600 - 1700 - 2600
series router. Here's the thing, from my summer job (i'm 17), i'm going to
have about 3000$, and i really want to get a cisco router both for my own
training, and for use at home. I want to go with somthing that's modular,
and not UNGODLY expensive, so that's why i'm leaning twords a 16/1700 series
router. But i would really like to get a 2600 series router, because i know
one of the 2600 models can connect token ring and ethernet networks. That
would be nice, because i have set up a token ring netwrk at 16Mbps just for
the hell of it, and it would be nice if i could actually use it for somthing
:) Not only that, but it has more WIC slots, and it also has a expandable
network slot. This would also be nice... The 8-analog modem card was
particularly attractive.. i could set my own mini ISP, if not just use it
for myself as a backup line. What would you all suggest? I know i'm buying
whatever i get used, but i still can't quite decide. Heh, not only that,
but the 2600 looks a hell of a lot cooler ;) Does the 16/1700 series
support ISO release 12.x? And what kind of processing speed diffrence is
there? RAM / FLASH limit diffrences? I'm just a tad bit lost about this
one. Thanks guys!

Question about upgrading Boot flash and System image. [7:1436]

2001-04-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Katson Yeung)

Hi,

I upgraded my old 7507 with 12.0.16GD software for a week, but I did
not upgrade it's bootflash (it is still a pretty old 11.1.6)...

I heard from some of my engineering friends that, when I upgrade the
IOS, it is better to upgrade the bootflash together. Is it true??

Is there any undesirable effect if I just upgrade the IOS but not the
bootflash?

Thanks

FORGET ABOUT ABOVE POST [7:1445]

2001-04-20 Thread Justin M. Clark

I figured it out about 5 minutes after i posted that.

it was the routing table on Comp1

once i dialed up it set its default route to the PPP IP address, so i just
had to add the route to 10.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 to go through 192.168.0.2

Everything is great now.

CCIE Written cramsession [7:1446]

2001-04-20 Thread Dennis Laganiere

I wanted to post some corrections.

I'm the author of the CCIE Written Cramsession that you can grab for free
from brainbuzz (www.cramsession.com). I wrote the cramsession quickly by
basically just typing up my study notes and passing them along. I've had a
lot of great feedback from people, and I've found the document copied to a
bunch of other websites (sometimes without even bothering to removing my
name from the bottom... :-))

Anyway, in the last six months people have had a chance to let me know about
some errors in the document and I wanted to pass along so that people aren't
studying inaccurate information. The most talked about problem with the
cramsession is the whole "host---router---router---host" thing. Trust me,
in long discussions, I've tried to defend it, but I was wrong; just flat-out
wrong.

Anyway, I don't want to make a career out of the CCIE Written exam, but
since I don't know if I can get the Webmaster to implement the corrections,
I just wanted to pass them along for general consumption. Also, since I'm
going out on a limb ask the site to do an update, if anybody has found any
other problems I'm unaware of, please let me know pretty quick so I get them
included. Thanks, and good luck with your studying...

Thanks all...

that besides the 700 series, all Cisco routers that run the Cisco ios

be capable of running igrp? After all, since igrp is Cisco's very own

 Please advise.

CCNA expiration is automatically renewed when you get your CCNP or CCDP. So
long as you keep your CCNP or CCDP current, you'll always be a CCNA (CCNA
and CCDA for CCPD).

Re: What ISP do you recommend for BGP?? [7:1295]

2001-04-20 Thread Jason J. Roysdon

I can say that every time I've contact Sprint the response has been very
fast and satisfactory. I've had to make many follow-up calls to get things
done with UUNET. I guess you can relax a little when you're the top dog?
I'm glad Cisco TAC doesn't feel that way.

I agree with Jason, it's going to be the "luck of the draw" as far as the
competency of the Engineering staff that you will have assigned to work
with
you. We're turned up Internet connections with ATT, Sprint and Internap.
We were lucky and all three were pretty good as far as the BGP
configurations went. However, the latency and subsequent response time
for
our E-commerce users in different parts of the country varied widely
between
the three with ATT being by far the worst. IMHO, you can work through
most
of the initial configuration and setup issues but support and response
time
is something you will live with for a long time. Consider these factors
as
 well.

It's all going to depend on the luck of the draw as to the engineer you
get,
I think, at least to some degree (same is true of Cisco TAC, and they're
the
top as far as support goes, IMHO). Mind you I've only turned up two BGP
connections, but Sprint was totally on the ball and great to work with.
WorldCom/UUNET was incompetent and I had to walk him through a number for
things like getting a default route advertised from them, what
customer-only
routes mean, etc. (lucky for me I did them after Sprint). Check
Boardwatch
for ISP costs and latency comparisons. WorldCom is directly connected to
nearly 50% of prefixes advertised. I believe Sprint has like 30%.

Check the Cisco website in tre training and certification section, in

reverse telnet problem [7:1454]

2001-04-20 Thread Fred Danson

Hey Group,

I seem to be having a small problem with reverse telnet!

Here's what's configured- I setup my terminal server (2511) with a loopback
of 1.1.1.1, ip host commands for each router connected through the async
ports, and transport input all no exec on line 1 8.

Here's the problem- when I first do a reverse telnet to any one of my
routers, something funny happens! For some reason, the text comes onto the
screen very slow, and I can't type any commands. I appear to be telnetted
into the routers, but I still can't type anything!

There is one exception though. The problem occurs only when I reverse telnet
to my 2500 series routers. The problem does not occur when I reverse telnet
to my 4000 series router.

Does anyone know what the problem here is? Am I forgetting a command or two?
Also, could anyone explain the purpose of the no exec command (I just read
it in a book, but never really though about it) on my async lines?

Thanks in advance,
Fred

P.S. All of the routers, except for the 4000, are running version 12.0
enterprise IOS

Re: Failed BSCN [7:1405]

2001-04-20 Thread Jason J. Roysdon

Sorry to hear, sounds like my first pass (and I was so pissed I took the
rest of the day off and studied, retook the test that afternoon in the last
slot and passed by 150 points). Of course, I blame the ACRC book I used to
study with has just a few pages on BGP (my fault for not comparing the
outlines of the ARCR vs. the Routing v2 test and seeing that BGP played a
bigger role).

There are a ton of resources online, but if you're going to spend some time
studying, get Halabi's "Internet Routing Architectures, Second Edition" book
and you'll learn a huge amount of BGP info.

I like started with Avi Freedman's stuff. I like his point of view
(practical, small ISP point of view). I haven't re-read his material since
I've gotten some hands-on and read Halabi twice, so I'm sure I might find
some out of date or things that I might not agree on.

Re: Cisco IOS upgrade security policy [7:1408]

2001-04-20 Thread Jason J. Roysdon

My understanding is that you can upgrade to any minor release without cost.
So if you had 11.1(1), you could upgrade to 11.1(8). To go to a new major
release, like 11.2(1), you'd have to purchase it (or have a SmartNet
contract).

So long as a product isn't listed as DF (deferred), I wouldn't worry too
much about it unless there is an issue you're running into that TAC had told
you or found in the bug tracker system. Usually the need to upgrade is for
new features. If you don't need the new features and a product works and
isn't deferred, might as well stick with it (unless it's for a test lab, of
course).

I won't say my personal opinion on crappy, err, buggy software. Micro$oft
bothers me the most, but anyone in general that charges for the "new"
version that fixes the bugs in the old just really has a lot of nerve.
Especially the new Windows 2000 ads showing a Windows 95 BDOD and says
something like, "Tired of Blue Screens? Upgrade to Windows 2000
Professional." I mean, what a joke. We sold you crappy software, but we've
made better stuff now, so buy it and fix the problems we made in our
original software. I think Computer Associates (CAI) come in second on my
"bad software" maker list (I can tell some terrible backup software
stories).

Hmm, well, maybe I did say my personal opinion *g* It's easily to get me
off on a tangent.

Since it looks like different IOS versions along with platform version

I'm no librarian and don't know much about how ISBN's work, but you'd think

Be sure to get the Second Edition version of this book (c) 2000, instead of
