Off Topic a bit - The IOnternet Routing Table [7:2360]

2001-04-28 Thread Chuck Larrieu

The Bates report shows eight straight days over 100K routes

Table History

DatePrefixes
200401 100216
210401 100108
220401 100099

250401 100635
260401 100755
270401 100797

Check http://www.employees.org/~tbates/cidr.plot.html for a plot
of the table history.

Interestingly, a minor thread showed up on NANOG about cutting down the
number of routes in internet tables the other day.

Re: T3 DSU configuration [7:2349]

2001-04-28 Thread Traceroute

There may be less to configure than appears. Every time I have unboxed an
Adtran TSU 120e, it is set by default for a T1. So I just plug it in and go
knowing that my router is ready. Although www.adtran.com has online manuals
for there products including T3 units, the ADC may not but I am betting it
is almost ready out of the box... you may ant to check their website.. if
you have questions..

Re: Recruiters Comments!! [7:2310]

2001-04-28 Thread Traceroute

Adele, I have noticed that many times the recruiters dont even understand
the certification (and they get a commision! LOL), but it does not appear to
be as valuable as a CCNA and experience (like you have), so I would not
worry too much. Before I completed the CCNP, I listed on my resume passed
exams in progress for CCNP. And later on after a recruiter asks I see you
have your CCNP, Are you working on your CCNA?, I just tell them Well, you
may want to go to www.cisco.com/certifications and get up to speed on the
cert. Then I just concentrate on getting past the recruiter to the employer
to answer the real meaningful questions they will ask in an interview like.
Explain OSPF, or what is the purpose of subnet 255.255.255.252 between two
routers, or how and why would you implement BGP? Good Luck, you have no
need to worry and maybe you can teach a recruiter a helpful tip or two in
your journey

I don't know if this is just me, Why, do the recruiters always asked
 when
you indicate, CCNP in progress on your resume When will you have it
 finished?
Is that going to make a difference whether I qualify for a position or
 not?
I have two other major certifications and 4 years experience in the IT
 field.

I'm wondering if it should even be mentioned???

I look forward to your remarks. Thank you.

add on to this .

After running BGP you can then control routes using
AS-PATH prepend, policy routing ,filter-list etc.

Access server configuration [7:2376]

2001-04-28 Thread Ed Dombrowski

Can anybody post some working configs for a 2509 or 2511. I am going nuts
trying to configure a 2509 i just got. I have been using this page as a
reference but i am not having much luck.
http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/793/access_dial/comm_server.html. I cant
seem to find any other info on the cisco site relating to just setting this
thing up plugged into the console ports of my other routers. Currentl;y i
have it working on one router (the 1601) but i cant get a second one to work
(2521). I cant tell what the difference is at this point. I will post my
running configs if anybody can offer some tips. The configs are a bit messy
on some of them as these are lab routers and i am studying for my BSCN exam.
I posted this to the other 2 cisco newsgroups yesterday but i think my news
server sucks. I still dont see my posts 15 hours later Also, the 1601
router when i try to connect gives the message connection refused by remote
host but if i hit enter again it connects. The 2521 just gives me the same
message but wont connect at all. I would really appreciate any help. I just
cant find any info that is useful anywhere. I even drove to the bookstore
and looked through about 15 books but didnt find anything more specific then
the page i refrenced above.

Re: A cheap way to practice MPLS? [7:2345]

2001-04-28 Thread andyh

MPLS is supported on the 3600s and upwards - not sure of the IOS versions,
but I have used 12.0.15S1 (SP track) with some good effect on 7200s in my
work lab. I would expect the functionality to trickle down to the 2600s
before too long, and most likely to lower end stuff over time. Annoyingly
the commands are there in some 2600 IOSes, but the functionality just isn't.

I was wondering if anybody could suggest a (relatively) cheap and
reasonable
list of equipment with which I can practice MPLS. I have a CCIE R+S-type
lab with me right now, and I want to supplement it with routers that can
form a MPLS core. I am well aware that I can buy a bunch of GSR's and
7000,
but I don't have that kind of money. So what do you think is the minimum
set of hardware that I would need that would still allow for practice and
understanding of as many MPLS features and concepts as possible.

For us, it reached over 100,000+ lately by PSI.net's contribution. They
have changed their announcement to all the down at /27s, specially their
38.0.0.0 ip blocks. We have a private peering with them, and we used to get
about 2,800+, but now it reached over at 22,000+ this morning. Maybe they
are getting ready to break up in near future?

Re: OFF TOPIC -Job Offer without Interview?? [7:2369]

2001-04-28 Thread Jason

This is basically what is known as a bodyshop. You are a mechandise, you fit
the decription, the price match. He doesn't care if you can do the job, if
you cannot, he will just replaced you. I would suggest that you call him
back and inform him that should you go down and they changed their mind,
they are expected to pay you for time wasted IF you need a job. Otherwise,
don't bother

Greg Macaulay wrote in message
[EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]...
 Gd' Day Everyone,

I need some input (comments, criticisms, enlightenment, suggestions, etc.)
rather quickly. I'm in the DC metro area. Someone grabbed my resume off
Monster and called me two weeks ago -- asked NO technical questions -- and
basically gave me a brief synopsis of his company -- confirmed my salary
requirements -- and said he would circulate my resume to others in his
company and if there was interest, he'd get back to me.

Last nite -- Friday 4/27 at about 8:00 p.m., he calls again -- asks only
if
I'm available -- and then says I can report to work on Tuesday 5/1.
Again,
no technical questions -- simply confirmed my salary requirements -- and
simply wanted me to FAX a copy of my certs to him. Nothing else.

Then I slowed him down. Asked about benefits, including training, etc.
and
then asked about the job Turns out he has a contract with a
Freddie-something? Agency and needs a NP/DP as he put it (CCNP/CCDP) to
show
up on Tuesday for about 3 mos. Althought he assured me that I would be a
PERMANENT employee and he had other projects to put me on after this job
was
complete. When I pushed questions about the benefits, he offered to have
his
benefits person call me Monday -- until I suggested that I come to his
company offices Monday to SEE his site.

Now I have to decide whether this is really a suitable position to want to
put on my resume, and whether it's really legit. I have serious doubts
about someone who would hire an employee over the phone, sight unseen (I
could be picking my toes, drinking beer, a fat old redneck! -- I'm not!).
If he's willing to hire in such a fashion -- isn't he doing a disservice
to
his client -- and won't he be just as likely to fire me -- on a whim. Is
this a safe job -- am I really going to get paid? What do I say to the
client if asked?? I''ve got very bad vibes about this -- but I don't know
 if my suspicions are justified!!!

 All replies will be appreciated!

OFF TOPIC -Job Offer without Interview?? [7:2369]

2001-04-28 Thread Greg Macaulay

Gd' Day Everyone,

I need some input (comments, criticisms, enlightenment, suggestions, etc.)
rather quickly. I'm in the DC metro area. Someone grabbed my resume off
Monster and called me two weeks ago -- asked NO technical questions -- and
basically gave me a brief synopsis of his company -- confirmed my salary
requirements -- and said he would circulate my resume to others in his
company and if there was interest, he'd get back to me.

Last nite -- Friday 4/27 at about 8:00 p.m., he calls again -- asks only if
I'm available -- and then says I can report to work on Tuesday 5/1. Again,
no technical questions -- simply confirmed my salary requirements -- and
simply wanted me to FAX a copy of my certs to him. Nothing else.

Then I slowed him down. Asked about benefits, including training, etc. and
then asked about the job Turns out he has a contract with a
Freddie-something? Agency and needs a NP/DP as he put it (CCNP/CCDP) to show
up on Tuesday for about 3 mos. Althought he assured me that I would be a
PERMANENT employee and he had other projects to put me on after this job was
complete. When I pushed questions about the benefits, he offered to have his
benefits person call me Monday -- until I suggested that I come to his
company offices Monday to SEE his site.

Now I have to decide whether this is really a suitable position to want to
put on my resume, and whether it's really legit. I have serious doubts
about someone who would hire an employee over the phone, sight unseen (I
could be picking my toes, drinking beer, a fat old redneck! -- I'm not!).
If he's willing to hire in such a fashion -- isn't he doing a disservice to
his client -- and won't he be just as likely to fire me -- on a whim. Is
this a safe job -- am I really going to get paid? What do I say to the
client if asked?? I''ve got very bad vibes about this -- but I don't know
if my suspicions are justified!!!

All replies will be appreciated!

Greg Macaulay

 add on to this .

After running BGP you can then control routes using

2001-04-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Katson Yeung)

Thanks Dave,

I do think it is related to cell level.. but as an exercise, I would
really want to dig up the pieces the see the root cause...

At least there are three possibilities

If there are lost cell, there should be a lost cell warning If it
is not a lost cell, but simply cell corruption, then there should be a
cell error... or maybe it is the telco ATM switch drop cell at the
middle?

I don't know...

any links that may be congested? A DS3 perhaps? Need to find where the

I put that router connected back-to-back with another router and
discover no cell loss... Only two things are diff from the lab.

1. It is now switched thru telco. (not back-to-back)
2. It is not the same MM fibre at both router to the telco ATM port.

Re: NAT on set-base OS [7:2355]

2001-04-28 Thread Jason Roysdon

Catalyst switches don't do layer 3 manipulation. You'd need to do this sort
of thing in the MFSC (router) module if your CAT6509 has one. You would
'session' into the module from the CLI of the switch if you had one. From
the MFSC, NAT is going to be identical to an IOS router, as that's what the
MFSC is.

Re: Bandwidth restriction [7:2300]

2001-04-28 Thread Jason Roysdon

Really all you can do is restrict their outgoing traffic. You can restrict
incoming traffic (basically dropping anything over a given amount), but that
won't stop any non-tcp flows (like udp-based streaming audio), as they will
just keep sending and won't respond to being throttled down (of course,
it'll look/sound like crap, and may get users to stop doing it). Two ways
of doing it: CAR, but then why restrict bandwidth if the other side isn't
using it? Or QoS, which only drops when things are saturated. Sounds like
CAR may be what you want if you truly want them limited to 10kbps and never
more (I've never needed to implement it).

  More info on this:

When we by pass PIX (plus in a laptop to a hub between PIX and Internet

Behind PIX, we can ping www.sitemeter.com and get 100% reply from

Re: Access server configuration [7:2376]

2001-04-28 Thread Earl Aboytes

You need to clear the line. Do a show line on the 2509. Anything that you
have not
started a session with that has a splat next to it needs a clear line. You
should be
able to do a ctrl-shift-6 x at that point to get back to the 2509 and then
over to the
next router.

Your configuration is correct.

on some of them as these are lab routers and i am studying for my BSCN

I posted this to the other 2 cisco newsgroups yesterday but i think my news
server sucks. I still dont see my posts 15 hours later Also, the 1601
router when i try to connect gives the message connection refused by remote

message but wont connect at all. I would really appreciate any help. I just
cant find any info that is useful anywhere. I even drove to the bookstore
and looked through about 15 books but didnt find anything more specific
then
 the page i refrenced above.

Yes, with the right IOS image, an IP+ image should be enough, but check the
CCO to be sure.

BTW, chances are pretty good you can get a 2620 or 2621 used for less than
an used 4500/4700 with a NP-1FE.

Go with your first impressions, they are almost never wrong! But it doesn't

Hi Arthur,

all the best for the CID. Frankly i found the CCDA a whole lot tougher and a
very-involving exam what with 5 case scenarios.

So with CID (Jan 26th 2001) I was expecting things to be really tough - I
was pleasantly suprised - NO CASE STUDIES(apart from a 4 line one in a
question) and basically it was recall value - no application of any design
concepts - felt like a CCNA paper all over again though worded differently.

Frankly there are no tests really that can prepare you for Design but rest
assured that the questions are more like 'recall' in nature - so that measn
easy !!
2 hours is comfortable !! really, just know your basics well!! an 898 is easy
to get

X21 interconnectivity issue with MUX [7:2398]

Dear All,

I am currently experiencing a issue regarding
connectivity of Cisco Router 2511 with Multiplexer
(MUX) which is acting as a DCE device. The MUX is
providing clock, as it is shown at router's console by
entering 'show controller ser 0' but the DCD never
comes up. I have checked the pin configuration by
surfing on Cisco cable specification doc of X21 DTE
cable(DB15 connector) and found that the cable is not
getting CTS from MUX, so am i rite in guessing that
this might be the main cause of DCD not coming up??
can anyone plz help ?? i will highly appreciate it

Re: Access server configuration [7:2376]

2001-04-28 Thread Kevin Wigle

Although correct for all intents and purposes, I would include the command
no exec on the lines.
When interference or other stuff bumps the lines, your router tries to
open an exec session immediately, the no exec prevents this but will open
a session when you press enter a few times. This prevents all those lines
being busy until you what them and you won't have to clear them all the
time.

Here is the config for my 2509 with all the address/password stuff
sanitized.

Using the Feature Navigator (http://www.cisco.com/go/fn)

It says that IP Plus on the 4500 supports ISL from 11.3-6 (16/4)

to 12.1-7 (32/8)

But as John said, an FE for the 4500/4700 is expensive

Yes, with the right IOS image, an IP+ image should be enough, but check
the
 CCO to be sure.

BTW, chances are pretty good you can get a 2620 or 2621 used for less than
 an used 4500/4700 with a NP-1FE.

Re: Differences between TACACS+ and Cisco ACS [7:2245]

2001-04-28 Thread GSAdm

Cisco ACS provides lot of control and management features on Cisco
routers. Few of them ...

1 You'd define access privileges, so user could log on once and he will be
assigned to appropriate level of enable mode.

2 You'd have auxillary enable password required on per user basis.

3 You'd use Cisco ACS to confirm authorization request for each user's
command i.e. this will give you command level granuality. That is, users
could be in enable 15 mode ... but, still conf t would be denied via
authorization.

4 You'd create accounting of every single command typed in either config
mode or EXEC mode.

 Hi Everyone,

The company I am working for is considering purchasing Cisco ACS
software. This piece of software will be running on Solaris platform.
Currently, I am using TACACS+ (self-supported software with source code)
on our environment running on both Solaris and linux platforms (Primary
TACACS is on Solaris and backup is on Linux). We've modified the source
code so that each user has his/her own privilige password so that we
have a record of who is doing what on the network devices (accounting
purpose). Everything is running smoothly and the company is happy with
 the result.

In my opinion, learning CLI in Unix/linux is not an easy task to master.
Because of this, I am solely responsible for the TACACS servers. Finding
someone to train for this thing is NOT an easy thing (thanks to Microsoft
mentality of POINT-and-CLICK attitude of new people coming into the IT
field these days). I've tried to train several people for this task but
it was unsuccessful. Because of this, the company is considering of
migrating the TACACS server from Solaris/Linux over to Microsoft Windows
platforms (YIKES) so that we can find additional support staffs.
The software package that we consider is Cisco ACS. I have several
 questions regarding this package:

 1) Is this software stable on a Windows platform? (Sorry I have to ask)
 2) How long does it take to train a newbie to be efficient with Cisco
ACS running on Winblows platform?
 3) Does Cisco ACS support enable privilege for each individual user (i.e
does each user have his/own enable password)?

If anyone has done it before or have a similar experience, I would like
 to hear from you.

 Many thanks.

Although correct for all intents and purposes, I would include the command
 no exec on the lines.
When interference or other stuff bumps the lines, your router tries to
open an exec session immediately, the no exec prevents this but will
open
a session when you press enter a few times. This prevents all those
lines
being busy until you what them and you won't have to clear them all the
 time.

it works. You need to check the website first for login name password,

basically gave me a brief synopsis of his company -- confirmed my salary
requirements -- and said he would circulate my resume to others in his
company and if there was interest, he'd get back to me.

Now I have to decide whether this is really a suitable position to want to

If he's willing to hire in such a fashion -- isn't he doing a disservice to

this a safe job -- am I really going to get paid? What do I say to the

bootcamp [7:2413]

2001-04-28 Thread Tom York

Hi everyone;
I will take R/S lab exam at Tokyo in August. This is my first attempt. I
start to study bootcamp from lab 1. And I found many multi protocol labs
have appletalk, decnet, and so on which I think I don't need to know that.
But, I really don't need to know anythin about appletalk, decnet, and so on?

And, Lab 10 is only for ATM LANE which I think I don't need to know,
because I read the follwoing quoted from bootcamp.

I know it's better to know everything, but I just want to learn what I need
to know for the lab exam. Please give me some advise. Thanks.

Tomo

QOTED FROM BOOTCAMP

Effective immediately, the following topics have been removed from the lab
exam content:
LAT
DECnet
Apollo
Banyan VINES
ISO CLNS
XNS
ATM LANE
X.25
Effective February 1, 2001, the following topic will be removed from the lab
exam content:

 Hi Everyone,

Currently, I am using TACACS+ (self-supported software with source

on our environment running on both Solaris and linux platforms

source
code so that each user has his/her own privilige password so that we
have a record of who is doing what on the network devices (accounting

with
 the result.

In my opinion, learning CLI in Unix/linux is not an easy task to
master.
Because of this, I am solely responsible for the TACACS servers.
Finding
someone to train for this thing is NOT an easy thing (thanks to
Microsoft
mentality of POINT-and-CLICK attitude of new people coming into the IT
field these days). I've tried to train several people for this task
but
it was unsuccessful. Because of this, the company is considering of
migrating the TACACS server from Solaris/Linux over to Microsoft
Windows
platforms (YIKES) so that we can find additional support staffs.
The software package that we consider is Cisco ACS. I have several
 questions regarding this package:

 1) Is this software stable on a Windows platform? (Sorry I have to
ask)
 2) How long does it take to train a newbie to be efficient with Cisco
ACS running on Winblows platform?
 3) Does Cisco ACS support enable privilege for each individual user

does each user have his/own enable password)?

If anyone has done it before or have a similar experience, I would

Re: Cisco fire staff [7:641]

2001-04-28 Thread xc

This is an addendum to a previous post. Somebody asked about for opinions
about Cisco's announced layoffs of 8500 people.

I responded that every tech company is going through hell right now, but
Cisco had the forethought and compassion to offer 6 months severance (2
months automatic, an additional 4 if you sign their severance agreement),
which stands in stark contrast to certain other companies who not only gave
no severance, but declared bankruptcy while still owing backpay and expenses
to employees (the Web consulting company Marchfirst immediately comes to
mind - the bankruptcy judge of that case has even declared that employees
who are owed backpay/expenses have to get in line behind the major
creditors, so you know those employeers are going to get nothing). Then
there are stories of people getting severance checks that bounced, companies
laying off people in violation of the Federal WARN labor laws, companies
giving job offers and then trying to retroactively withdraw the offer after
the offer was accepted (presumably the candidate had turned down other
competing offers to take the offer which is now being withdrawn), etc. etc.

If you're going to have to lay off people, offering 6 months severance seems
to be a more-than-compassionate way to do it. Several other posters talked
about similar deals offered by Nortel and other companies when they laid
people off. So it's pretty clear that some companies have positioned
themselves as 'the good guys' (as opposed to other companies who have
clearly shown themselves to be the 'bad guys'), so that they will be the
employer-of-choice when the economy picks up again. These companies have
tried to preserve goodwill among the networking community so that they will
have little problem in hiring again.

While I am not trying to downplay the pain that those laid-off Cisco or
Nortel employees must be feeling, on the other hand, they could have been
working for one of those www.fuc*edcompany.com employers like Marchfirst.

Well, to build up even more goodwil, recently, it was announced that John
Chambers is cutting his salary to $1. The chairman (forgot his name) is
also cutting his salary to $1. The management stated that since so much
cost-cutting was going on at Cisco, management should share in the pain.

I don't begrudge company execs getting rich when times are good, but it is
so refreshing to see execs sharing in the bad times. A world of difference
from the usual M.O., where execs slash thousands of jobs and still reap
their millions. As stated in fuc*edcompany: These guys seem to have worked
out that you don't have to be an as*hole to make money. Bravo. About fuc*ing
time someone got a clue

Now some of you may be thinking that the $1 salary is just a Cisco
publicity stunt. Sure, maybe so. But then I don't see the exec's of those
other companies who have laid off thousands (Intel, Yahoo, etc.) doing
anything comparable.

I absolutely have to agree. There are ways to lay people off that is
dignified and respectful. Then there's the way NEC BNS did it! Last week, I
was in my boss's office talking about something completely unrelated when he
says Oh, by the way and hands me a lay-off notice. An hour later I'm
history. NO f* idea in the world it was gonna happen. Yeah, I'm
realy full of warm and fuzzy feelings now. Sure the economy sucks, I can
understand that. But, as my daddy always said, It's the measure of a man
how he acts like when he's down. Anybody can be a good guy when times are
good!. You know what, he was right.

Now back to my rack. The best revenge is success.

Re: 500-CS...HELP!! [7:2414]

2001-04-28 Thread Brad Steinman

Hmm. I have a CS500 as well.

Looking at my config and comparing to the info you have provided, I have
some suggestions. Note that you may have already done this - as I cant see
ur config or every command you've entered.

1. Are you using (ex.)'telnet 1.1.1.1 2001' to rev telnet to the 0 line?
Note that the CS500 ports are from labeled 0-15 where as their corresponding
tty lines are 1-16.

2. Cabling problem? If you are connecting to a 2500 series, you will only
need a std rollover cable between the two.

3. Use 'stopbits 1' for your tty lines. Default is not 1, 1.5 I think?
Probably wont help the immediate problem though...

   Hi Everyone,

The company I am working for is considering purchasing Cisco ACS
software. This piece of software will be running on Solaris platform.
Currently, I am using TACACS+ (self-supported software with source
  code)
on our environment running on both Solaris and linux platforms
  (Primary
TACACS is on Solaris and backup is on Linux). We've modified the
  source
code so that each user has his/her own privilige password so that we
have a record of who is doing what on the network devices (accounting
purpose). Everything is running smoothly and the company is happy
  with

  (i.e
does each user have his/own enable password)?

If anyone has done it before or have a similar experience, I would
  like
   to hear from you.

   Many thanks.

Another way to get revenge is to tell as many people as possible not to work

Re: OT- Another cool thing about Cisco (Re: Cisco fire staff) [7:2429]

2001-04-28 Thread xc

Sure, every company is re-evaluating its cost structure now. But in my
opinion, there is a right and wrong way to do this. Clearly the wrong way
is to screw employees out of backpay/severance/expenses (like what
Marchfirst did, as was profiled on CNET a few weeks ago), or try to
retroactively change employee's pension/retirement funds (it sounds illegal,
but you'd be surprised what creative corporate lawyers will try), or some
BullS like that.

The right way is to do things like what Cisco, Nortel, or Lucent (yes Lucent
I have heard also has tried to take care of its employees).

What I hope is that the poor behavior of the bad companies will come back to
haunt them. Like when the economy recovers, and these companies try to hire
again, they find it difficult to find any takers, because everybody
remembers how they didn't give a rat's posterior about their employees when
times were bad. Rather, all the job candidates will flock to the 'good-guy'
companies where they know they will be taken care of, whether times are good
or bad. Call it corporate Karma.

But, it's probably a pipe dream.

Catalyst switches don't do layer 3 manipulation. You'd need to do this
sort
of thing in the MFSC (router) module if your CAT6509 has one. You would
'session' into the module from the CLI of the switch if you had one. From
the MFSC, NAT is going to be identical to an IOS router, as that's what
the
 MFSC is.

Ken,

 I bought this book
(http://www.bestwebbuys.com/books/compare/isbn/1578702135) after reading
Galina's ATM White Paper on CertificationZone(plug..!) and let me say... at
first glance the book is great resource. I've now had the book sometime and
let me say it's even more. In her book Galina not only goes through the
basic foundation of ATM, but she also covers how to identify and implement a
specific solution. What also makes this book awesome is the various well
laid out and diagrammed ATM practice lab scenarios.

I must say anyone wanting to know more about ATM and having access to the
equipment used in the lab examples will most definitely love this book.
After, having had David Ginsberg - ATM book
(http://www.bestwebbuys.com/books/compare/isbn/0201343029) this really put
the technology within my reach. Another bonus in the book is the section
that specifically covers the LS1010 ATM switches..

Recently there was a thread on the list in which questions were asked of
specific configuration as it relates to the setting up SVC's using Classical
IP and ARP over ATM. I went to Galina's book and had the answer in a matter
of seconds..

Get this book... it's Cisco ATM and Configuration Explained... !

 Phil,

 Thanks for the infor.
I am trying to download the JunOS from our internal company website. I
just
want to verify if I will have to make it LS120 image. As I don't have
LS120
handy, but I do have some spare hard drives. I wonder if it can boot from
LS120, should it be bootable from normal hard drive?
I guess I will have to format the hard drive from BSD, and copy the file
to
it, just wonder if you or others have done this before. If LS120 is the
only or easiest way, I will just go and get one.

 Thanks
 KY

The Olive is simply the JunOS code running on a compatible PC.

If you've got the JunOS package, make the LS120 image, get an intel
based
pc with an LS120 drive. The image should just boot.

  something
else, although anybody can give me or tell me how to get a copy of

Re: BGP Dampening, What is a flap? [7:1128]

2001-04-28 Thread Jason

Answer 1 is correct. A flap is one transition, either from down to up or
from up to down.

Tom Pruneau wrote in message
[EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]...
 Greetings All

I am in the process of writing a BGP class, at present I am specifically
working on a section covering dampening.

My question is what is a flap

 The two possible answers are:

 Answer one
A flap is whenever path information changes for a route. By this
definition
if a route goes away, that would be a flap. When the route comes back,
that
 would be another flap.
So a route going away then coming back would be 2 flaps.

 Answer two
A flap is a route transition from up to down back to up. So a route going
away then coming back would count as one flap.

I am mucking with this in my lab and the lab would seem to indicate that
answer two is the correct one, but when I read the Sam Halabi copyright
1997 internet routing architectures book, page 440 and 441 it says the
 answer is Answer one.

 I am at best confused

 Any help?

Re: OT- Another cool thing about Cisco (Re: Cisco fire staff) [7:2436]

2001-04-28 Thread Jason Roysdon

It's a stunt. His salary was like $300K. What are his stock options for
the year worth? I can't recall the numbers I heard (plus rumors aren't
worth much if you can't find some proof). I found this story stating in
1997 he received 800,000 stock options for the year. $300K is a drop in the
bucket with those sort of options (granted, you need to cash them in at the
right time).
http://www.forbes.com/asap/1998/0223/052.html

Oh, I found a better link from April '99 when he exercised 900,000 options
and then sold 850,000 of them for a profit of $80M:
http://www.xent.com/apr99/0013.html

Oh, I found even better numbers:
http://www.business.com/directory/computers_and_software/cisco_systems/peopl
e/chambers,_john_t/

I wonder if he's giving up the $1M bonus for the year? The man has $1.23B,
yes BILLION worth of stock options. Is it a stunt? Hmm. I'm not jealous,
nope, not me ;-)

Ok, $300K compared to $1B, it's 0.03% of his worth. Whoop-tee-doo.

RPMs for the same is available here (RPMs make installing on Linux a piece
of cake, basically automated installs):

I'll be giving it a spin tonight for use in my lab (updated my diagrams
today as well):

Actually, I don't like the way the line drawings exported from Visio, so
I'll update it again to make it more clear.

Re: OT- Another cool thing about Cisco (Re: Cisco fire staff) [7:2441]

2001-04-28 Thread Jason Roysdon

Actually, reading deeper into things, I'll amend this a bit. It's still a
stunt of sorts, but his current options are of very low value *until* the
economy and Cisco pick back up. Of course, he's still got the $1M bonus.
Thinking about things more, stock options really are a great thing to give
CEO's, as their value and worth is tied directly to how well the company is
performing, which will drive the CEO harder. Some details I've read, he
took Cisco from $1B revenue in '95 to $28B last year. He's replaced all the
VPs since he came on board, and now have 70 VPs that report directly to him.
I'd say he's earned his stock options and more.

Plus, his stock options are probably only work a few hundred million right
now.

RE: OT- Another cool thing about Cisco (Re: Cisco fire staff) [7:2442]

2001-04-28 Thread Roger Sohn

Actually, I don't really think it's considered a stunt. A lot of other
CEO's do this as well such as Larry Ellison of Oracle. The salary doesn't
really mean too much to them when they do have stock options that are worth
a lot more in the millions and billions of dollars.

But I think it's important to recognize that stock options aren't actually
considered cold cash until you exercise them. I don't know how to exactly
explain it, but it's not a direct expense to the company as an employee's
salary would be. So with John Chambers taking a $1 yearly salary, that
actually helps in contributing to reduce the company's expenses. Maybe not
as much as people would like to see it, but every penny counts. Chambers
personally stated that he did it to also help keep 2 or 3 important execs
(who he said who were very close to him) with the company.

All in all, I think it's pretty fair for Chambers to have the amount of
options that he does have. If he does a good job, the company will then do
well and so will his stock (more $$ for him) and also for the shareholders
and employees. It's a win/win situation. If he performs horribly as a
company leader, then his options will suffer and his performance will
reflect that. I personally think that it will be a true test to how good
Chambers really is. If he really is All That, then he will definitely
pull Cisco through this economic downturn and prove to people that he can
really lead. I hope he does. Cisco really holds a big part of shaping the
internet and the way things work.

Just my 2 cents,
Roger

Some questions [7:2444]

2001-04-28 Thread Omer Ehsan Dar

Hi all,
I am preparing for my CCIE written and I have been through quite a lot
of stuff but have some ambiguities. I hope you can help me out.
1. What is the result of sending a loop up signal to the CSU/DSU?
2. When converting a serial line between two routers to X.25 what needs
to be done?
Weell encap x25 to be configured with a map statement with a x121
address defined I think
3. What does an ip datagram contain?
now a datagram is basically a UDP thingi so there should be no TCP info
right nor any info about routing protocols hops, cost etc
4. Injecting 0.0.0.0 into an OSPF's AS causes what to happen?
I have read in Thomas's book on OSPF design that it causes the default
route to advertised as 0.0.0.0 even if there is another default route
specified. It sort of overrides it.
5. What will be the drawback in Fast ether channel?
My limited reading on the subject suggests that the drawback is that
all channels should be configured with the same parameters like the
same duplex mode, fault tolerance and load balancing etc
6. if you have a Novell IPX server and a router on the same LAN and they
have addresses configured on each other the only way that they are not
able to talk to each other is because the encapsulation is different
right??
7. IPXWAN this has been bothering me quite a lot I have found only small
pieces of info on this topic. Can you suggest some resource? Also
somewhere along the way I read that it is a substitute for IPX RIP is it
true??
8. If the number of scollision on a ethernet interface goes higher it is
a software problem. but on a serial line if the collisions increase it
is a hardware problem right?

thanks for the help.
Omer
