Have you define the "encapsulation frame-relay" command first?
If that doesn`t help, then your IOS doesn`t support for
"Frame Relay SVC Support (DTE)". Try upgrading the IOS, you
can lookup which IOS that supports subinterfaces from
Cisco IOS Feature Navigator link.

Subinterface P-2-P [7:30070]

2001-12-24 Thread Ash Aslam

Hello group,

I am trying to set-up a point-to-point subinterface but I do not see the
point-to-point or multipoint options under the physical interface as
follows:

r5-s(config)#interface serial 0.1 ?

I am having problems creating the point-to-point subinterface on both the
2500 and 2600 router platforms. 2503 has IOS Version 12.1(5) and 2612 has
IOS Version 12.1(4). I am not sure if this is IOS bug related.

I have tried various things but to no avail. Can anyone shed some light
with a brief example?

Thanks in adv,
Ash

Re: Activating VPN slows connection drastically, Why? [7:30043]

2001-12-24 Thread Henry D.

I don't know much about CheckPoint's VPN solutions but the logical
things that could cause degradation in performance could be either
client PC's that now with VPN are required to encrypt/decrypt data,
the end point machine that has to do the same things, some issues within
the infrastructure beyond the VPN Checkpoint machine, all or some
of the above issues could cause problems. Simply more information
is required for better analysis.

RE: ccbootcamp part 2 [7:29682]

2001-12-24 Thread Chuck Larrieu

according to the tenets of socialism, a publisher would be compensated only
the cost of producing the book. i.e. the cost of paper, the cost of ink, the
cost of binding, etc. authors would be compensated based on their need.
Since, under socialism, everyone is equal, all you writers would live in the
same quality shack the rest of us live in, and you would therefore get about
the same as you do now. ;->

under the tenets of socialism CCIE's would achieve because it is "according
to their ability" and they would be compensated only enough to support them
and their shack, which is identical to those of non CCIE's.

Sure makes one wish for socialism ;->

Merry Christmas.

I can't follow your logic, but regarding compensation to authors: We make
enough on each book sold to cover the cost of a latte. That's all. We don't
see the money. ;-)

RE: Activating VPN slows connection drastically, Why? [7:30043]

2001-12-24 Thread Chuck Larrieu

can you clarify for me?

HQinternet827bunch of PC's

PC's are running the Checkpoint VPN client. VPN tunnels go from PC to HQ
Checkpoint device, with the 827 doing only routing/bridging ( depending on
how the ISP is set up )

Is this correct?

When you say "the connection slows down" does that mean that prior to using
the VPN client, connection to HQ was fast? Or were you gauging by internet
access, as the PC's cannot access HQ without the client?

You will want to differentiate what is slow and what is fast. Then it will
be easier to focus in on a cause.

We have a DSL line connected through a Cisco 800 series router. The
connection is very fast until the checkpoint client software is activated to
access a checkpoint firewall vpn in the corporate office. This slows down
the connection drastically. What in the VPN could cause this? I just want to

2001-12-24 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

At 05:14 PM 12/24/01, Chuck Larrieu wrote:
>is an ICMP response SUPPOSED to go to a broadcast address?

In general, ICMP messages should go to a unicast address. A device could be
misconfigured with the wrong subnet mask, causing it to send to an address
that it thinks is a unicast but the recipients think is a broadcast. I've
seen that. Or it could just be a software bug, in other words, a poor
implementation of ICMP.

ICMP doesn't use UDP. I don't know if that's what you had in mind since I'm
not in left field with you. ;-) NIS uses UDP and could send to broadcast or
directed broadcast.

It means exactly what it says. The server sent an ICMP error to the
broadcast address. That's bizarre, so it's letting you know. ICMP messages
go to a unicast address usually. It would be worthwhile to figure out which
ICMP message the server sent. There are many.

Re: IP classless command [7:30056]

2001-12-24 Thread Mike

The best way to explain IP classless is to explain how a router works with
"no ip classless". Suppose you have a router with a static route configured
to 10.1.1.0/24 out some interface and you also have a default gateway
configured. Again, ip classless is disabled, "no ip classless".

A packet comes into the router destined for 10.1.1.2, the router looks at
the routing table, sees the static route and forwards as expected.

A packet comes into the router destined for 11.x.x.x, the router looks at
the routing table, sees the default gateway and forwards as expected.

A packet comes into the router destined for 10.10.10.1, you would expect the
router to forward the packet via the default gateway. However, because the
router is operting in "classful mode", the router drops the packet rather
then using the default gateway. This is because the router is in the same
classful network as the 10.1.1.0/24 network used for the static route.

If the "ip classless" command was used, the dropped packet would actually be
forwarded via the default gateway. There really is no reason not to use "ip
classless" on all router configurations.

IP classless command [7:30056]

2001-12-24 Thread Hunt Lee

Can anyone please explain to me what is "ip classless" used for? I looked
it up on the Caslow book, and it states that by enabling IP classless, it
allows one to override the contiguous subnet rule and allow the router to
look for the longest match beyond the listed subnets.

But I still don't understand what it means? Can anyone give me some
examples?

Thanks in advance.

RE: ccbootcamp part 2 [7:29682]

2001-12-24 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Just a couple of things, here. Again, with regards to NLI and their business
model, I agree that IMHO it could use some rethinking. HOWEVER..

1) your money buys you all labs and what so far has been unlimited ongoing
support. I.e. any new lab that comes out. Any corrections issued. Who
anywhere gives unlimited perpetual support for their products these days?

2) simple economics applies - if you don't like NLI's price, don't pay it.
Buy from their competition. IP Expert costs less. Fatkid is free. There are
some others around whose names I can't recall off hand, but if memory
serves, offer some good study materials. A search of the archives,
particularly on the CCIE Lab list, should turn up the names. If NLI finds
themselves with no customers, they will lower their price. Simple supply and
demand.

3) books cost too much, and too many of them, particularly in the
certification arena, are of limited value. Still, I have no reasonable
expectation that a publisher owes me the opportunity to buy only particular
chapters, or give me my money back after I have discovered how useless their
title is. I can't remember the title of that Upton Sinclair socialist book
published in the early part of the century, but IIRC, there was an
interested discussion in their about cost of books and compensation to
authors. "From each according to his ability and to each according to his
need" was twisted mightily in that justification, IIRC.

Something else to consider. I've rented rack time from both NLI and IP
Expert. With NLI, I was able to call, and have someone actually test some
voice configurations I was working on. With IP Experts, no such help was
available. NLI has been quite responsive to calls for support. IP Expert
leaves something to be desired there. I say that even though I prefer IP
Expert training materials at this point in time, for reasons I have stated
elsewhere.

Best wishes and merry Christmas.

Chuck

A copy of your book graces my bookshelf (I have to admit that I have not
had a chance to read it yet). I do not mind paying for the book. There are
a number of people here financing their own CCIE, it would be nice if the
labs were available in parts (I would be interested in labs 1-10 for
example).
The labs are extensive (having seen Lab 1 as an example) but are they
really worth $650. After having sold 100/1000/2000 lab sets, it becomes
less and less clear to me why the $650 fee is warranted. For $650 I can
buy about 10 books that help me prep for my CCIE. Are the works of
Doyle, Halabi, Caslow, Lee et all now worth as much. I don't believe
that each lab takes more work that a book such as yours or Halabi's,
the $650 fee may have been appropriate during the boom but
I do not believe that such a fee is still reasonable.

is an ICMP response SUPPOSED to go to a broadcast address? I'm probably off
in left field here, but your server should be sending UDP to a directed
broadcast address, shouldn't it?

what does your server / application documentation say?

I have a client that installed a Linux NIS server which is working with

and NIS server is receiving a message at below,

" 192.168.5.2 sent an invalid ICMP error to broadcast"

What is the meaning of this message, I searched on cisco but didnt find
anything. Can it be because of "no ip directed-broadcast" command on the
interface.

Any help will be appreciated?

2001-12-24 Thread John Kaberna

He asked about running it on Solaris 8. If he's like me, the thought of
using any security product on Windoze is frightening. I personally do not
want NT/2000 handling any security if I can help it. That's why I still run
2.3.6 on Solaris.

We have a DSL line connected through a Cisco 800 series router. The
connection is very fast until the checkpoint client software is activated to
access a checkpoint firewall vpn in the corporate office. This slows down
the connection drastically. What in the VPN could cause this? I just want to

Catalyst 2926T Problem [7:30034]

2001-12-24 Thread Barbee Jason

I'm testing out a 2926T I recently bought for my lab at my house. The 24
10/100 ports seem ok. I have tried plugging devices into the 2 100Mbps
uplink ports, but I get a continuous repeating error about every 2-3 seconds.
2001 Dec 24 12:01:23 %PAGP-3-CONFPORTCHNLFAIL:Failure = -1 in
configPortChannel for mNo/pNo = 1/1
when I plug in the other port, it says port 1/2

I have tried another generic switch and a PC. I have "set clear all" to
erase the NVRAM of the switch to get it back to factory config.
This is the first 5000 platform switch I have purchased and logged into,
maybe I am confused about the use of the uplink ports. Are they *only*
uplinks to another cisco ISL switch?
I have searched Cisco.com, and most search engines. It is documented at
Cisco, and they recommend that you contact your "Technical Support Rep"
about this problem.
Another behavior I noticed, When I transmit data over the switch (computer
to computer), there is a slight buzzing noise. It immediately stops when I
abort a file transfer. Is this normal?
Thank you for any help.
-Jason Barbee

Re: ICMP Error [7:30030]

2001-12-24 Thread Phil Barker

Have you got a sniffer to trace the error ?

It would be interesting to see the packet in question
since ICMP has 20 ish different error codes.

The ICMP error should not be broadcast either, it
should be unicast back to the originator of the
erroring device. Off the top of my head I cannot think
of a purpose for b/cast ICMP. I'll have a dig around
in the RFC to confirm.

ICMP Error [7:30030]

2001-12-24 Thread Cisco Breaker

Hi All,

I have a client that installed a Linux NIS server which is working with
broadcasts. That server is connected to cisco 4908. Server IP is
192.168.5.2. He is saying that when NIS server starts to work all clients
and NIS server is receiving a message at below,

" 192.168.5.2 sent an invalid ICMP error to broadcast"

What is the meaning of this message, I searched on cisco but didnt find
anything. Can it be because of "no ip directed-broadcast" command on the
interface.

Any help will be appreciated?

Best regards,

Skroo Boat Comp [7:30027]

2001-12-24 Thread Skroos Mom

Mommy is so proud of you, the way you stand up to
those mean people at Boat Comp. You certainly told off
that horrible Mork Rossol. How dare he claim to help
people, when my katykins is unable to benefit? You are

still my brave little soldier. I am reminded of that
time when you were in kindergarten. You had just
turned 9, and the other children were picking on you.
So you threw sand in their faces and squished their
candy into the dirt. You certainly stood tall that
day, and you are standing even taller today, lifters
notwithstanding.

Remember, Mommy will always love you, even though you
can't hold down a job. You are still Mommy's favorite
little lambkins.

By the way, when are you coming over again with your
laundry? Mommy has a new treatment, one that is sure
to remove those horrible yellow and brown stains. I
must confess, though, I remain uncertain how you will
correctly dress without those stains to guide you.

Keep up the good fight, my Little Man. Keep reminding
all those so called professionals at groupstudy and
boat comp that you are a mighty mite, and you won't
tolerate them. You don't need them. You have a good
job now with Roto Rooter. Which puzzles me. Do people
really pay you to give you your enemas?

Love,

Mommy

RE: Multihoming load balancing BGP [7:30011]

2001-12-24 Thread Kane, Christopher A.

If I may suggestPlease pay particularly close attention to how you
address the devices that you intend to advertise. I often have customers who
purchase 2 T1s and want to acquire equal loads on both. The mistake is when
they advertise a www server that takes all of the traffic. Based on
source/destination cache, all traffic for that server comes across one link.

As Howard suggested, please take the time to draw this out. If you truly
want load sharing, redundancy, telco diversity, ISP/NSP diversity and
ISP/NSP POP diversity. It really is not as simple as buying multiple WAN
circuits. You can get as granular as making a request to get the telco DLRs
in an attempt to reduce possible single points of failure.

Best Labs for CCIE studies [7:30025]

2001-12-24 Thread Shawn

Ho Ho Ho,

I was wondering what are the best labs out there for CCIE study. I'm
scheduled
to take my lab pretty soon, and I wanted to tune up with some terrific labs.
I'm a former INS'er so I've got about 10 pretty good labs here at home.

Any info would be terrific, and I must tell you that I'm leaning towards Brad
and Marc's labs, just because the reviews are so good.

Thanks

Shawn

Re: CCIE Lab Book Review [7:28991]

2001-12-24 Thread Sureshhomepage .com

Elijah,
I used the 1st edition book and found good with very little amt of errors.
The only problem with the book is that it lacked extensive multi protocol
labs, which I heard got added in the new 2nd ed. It is no doubt a
comprehensive book though I do not suggest this as the best for the CCIE lab
goers but a bible for the CCNP aspirants. CCIE lab goers really need a
tasty, delicious and immense one to read!

RE: RRs and Confeds as they relate to IE studies [7:29968]

2001-12-24 Thread Kane, Christopher A.

I've read Doyle Vol II. Now I'm reading Caslow. I've flipped through
Halabi's book. He actually has a statement regarding RR vs. Confed.
According to Halabi, "Cisco recommends RRs to solve the full-mesh IBGP
issue." It would seem that RRs are easier to implement if you take into
account that only the RRs need to have their configuration altered. The
Clients of the RRs take the neighbor statement as nothing more than an IBGP
peer.

One of the responders recommended Parkhurst's book. Yes I have it. But
haven't gotten to it yet. Since it's all config examples I am saving it for
a wrap up of my BGP studies.

Could we make a list of pros/cons to each? Or what solution each
implementation offers?
RR = possibly less config, only RR is altered (in the neighbor statement)
RR = continues to offer loop prevention with use of Cluster_List and
Cluster_ID
RR = solves the need to have full-mesh IBGP
RR = Question, are RR solutions easy to troubleshoot/maintain?

Confeds = offers chance to create a backbone of backbones
Confeds = use of Private ASs
Confeds = allows implementation of an IGP between confeds for further policy
implementation
Confeds = adds complexity when considering route announcements and behavior
of EBGP as an IBGP
Confeds = Question, are Confed solutions easy to troubleshoot/maintain?

Any other thoughts?

Chris

Good question. I don't claim to be an expert on BGP and will not comment on
the advantages and disadvantages of RR/Confeds in large/small environments.
I've only config'ed BGP once in a prod net. Seems to me tho that there is
an important distinction between the two as they might pertain to the lab
test. Both allow the use of weight and local preference (IBGP). Confeds
allow the use of MED since the connections between the confeds is EBGP. You
could also config multiple RR's (clusters) to allow the use of the MED
between the clusters but to me, confeds are easier. I'm sure that there
are other reasons to use one or the other as they relate to the lab, but I
haven't run into it yet.

Maybe I'm wrong, but this is my take on RR's/confeds. Would love to hear
comments to enlighten me.

ospf allows you to go for small segmentations called area. The routing
updates can be summarized and filtered area-specific. though Eigrp supports
