Vlan works on fastethernet. It should be full-duplex and 100M speed.Your
router is C2610,it has only one 10M ethernet port,so it will not work for
VLAN communication .

haha...touche, chuck! no, this is seriously going to be my first time.
i've done a lot of research, and am modeling my lab around the needs of
the "CCIE Practical Studies Vol. 1" book by Karl Solie. I figure, how
can I model my lab more accurately than if I do so from Cisco's book
itself? i am also using all my research from this group, as well as any
internet-based research i can find on the subject...

anyway, good point about the "good, cheap, accurate..." deal. i guess
i'd say "cheap/accurate" is my requirement. anyway, thanks for your
response. i'm wondering if i overwhelmed everyone with too much info.
maybe i should focus on one at a time. therefore...

...ATM: for all your presale engineers out there...if i was to put
together an ATM lab with two ATM routers and 1 ATM switch, what would
you purchase as a minimum requirement while still being able to use all
the features that the lab would require? so far, i am thinking LS1010
with CAM/PAM and the two routers with ATM interfaces are up in the air.
i was thinking of OC-3 interfaces all around, but even those are
expensive. can i use a T1 or ATM25 or T3 (etc.) interface to cut my
costs? would that mess up my lab environment?

thanks, and PLEASE help me out, here. i can see there are some
well-educated people on this list...

If the fast switching is enabled on a dialer interface, traceback

Switch Design Question [7:39888]

2002-03-29 Thread KM Reynolds

Hi All,

I am looking at this configuration:

[PC]---[Switch1]---Fiber---[Switch2]---[Switch3]---[WirelessBridge]---distance2miles---[WirelessBridge]---[4Switch10Mb]---[Router]---[ISPInternet]

The switches are all consist of 10Mb ports. The question. Whould it not be
a better design to take out switch2 and switch3 and replace it with one
switch with more ports. This would elimate one switch to traverse when the
clients are accessing the Internet.

Any thoughts on this or if you see other things that may help with the
design.

TIA

Possibly. But the largest source of delay is probably your Internet
link, unless it's 10 Mbps or faster.

Some of the questions to answer about replacing the switches:
Do the separate switches pass traffic (e.g., printer) that stays in
  their workgroup?

Are there any distance restrictions between switch 2 and 3?

Do separate switches help you distinguish between business units?

Is the required number of ports due to increase, so you need to
  add capacity?

Another bit of good info to know:

Traditionally, the 1700 series would not support trunking, either ISL or
Dot1Q. That includes both the 1720 and 1750. In these cases, you had to
purchase a 2600 with IP Plus, which is an expensive proposition to avoid the
necessity of 2 or more E/FE interfaces.

I just setup for a client a 1721 router which DOES support both trunking
encapsulations and does it with IP only IOS! This is a huge savings over
the traditional options for inter-VLAN routing. There are also new 1751 and
1760 models which I believe also support both modes of trunks.

Vlan trunking requires a fast ethernet connection. It cannot be trunked
with a 261X. You'd need a 262X.

If you have to deal with a 2611, your options become much more limited. You
could replace the 2611 with a 2620. Or you could get a ethernet module for
the 2611. Unfortunately, last time I checked (whish was a couple years ago,
given) those ethernet modules came in two models, 1 and 4 port, and cost
about $1000 per port.

Another option would be to replace the 2611 with a 1750. It's got one fast
ethernet port. If this network is as small as it sounds, it'd be a viable
option.

Oh, and about trunking, the way it works is you define the switch port
connected to the router as a trunk. This allows multiple (in your case,
all) vlans to use the one port. The router is configured with subinterfaces
on the fastethernet port, one for each vlan. The router can then route
between these vlans.

Also, assuming your dialer interfaces are relatively low speed, disabling
fast switching on the dialer interface really won't impact the performance
of that link. It might increase CPU usage, but again, if it's a slower
link, it won't cause a huge increase.

RE: Switch Design Question [7:39888]

2002-03-29 Thread Hartnell, George

In a 10Mb environ, what the heck! I would speculate that double-up won't
make an ROI out of consolidation.

However, this brings up a nasty little problem I'm looking at, and I might
phrase this another way. "How many cascaded switching devices can exist in a
broadcast domain without creating unacceptable latency in the network?"

I see some scary practices with repeated arrays of inexpensive switches,
"RAIS", if you will. Each time a new workstation room is set up, the answer
is to cascade more and more unmanaged hub/switches (sorry Cisco, it's a
money thing) on the rack or down the copper to the room, or both. While the
sweetness of low cost is succulent, surely there is a theoretical limit of
how many members of a "RAIS array" one can cram into a building.

So, boy and girl wonders, I've heard the magic number of "7". Anyone want
to "do the math"?

Very best and happy Friday, G.

Tracebacks are generally baaad, they report internl errors, usually
sofware and are most useful to TAC engineers who can run them thru their
secret decoder ring and identify what process caused said errors.

This particular bug doesn't seem as catastrophic but I wouldn't worry
too much about disabling fast switching on a dialer interface until a
bug fix is available or of coarse you can backrev.

If the reason for the second switch is you ran out of ports, replacing
it with a larger switch is fine if money in no object or you have
another use for these two switches. Otherwise I wouldn't worry, the
latency, though measurable is nothing to worry about compared to your
Internet connection.

Re: Switch Design Question [7:39888]

2002-03-29 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

Do you know if there was a reason for Switch 3 being in the design? That's
what I would try to find out

Maybe it was necessary because Switch 2 is located in a wiring closet,
whereas Switch 3 and the Wireless Bridge are in the main distribution
frame. Or maybe Switch 2 only has fiber-optic ports (not likely, but you
never know). Or maybe Switch 3 also connects a server farm. Or maybe the
network designer wanted to keep things modular, which is a good idea. Maybe
the designer added Switch 3 to try to contain problems related to the
wireless bridge being flaky. Or maybe it's there just because that's the
equipment that was available and there's no budget for a bigger switch.

These days switches are so fast that I don't think you need to be too
concerned about the switch adding any noticeable delay.

But if there's no good reason for it being there, then you're right to
question it. Simplifying the design would have some advantages: fewer
devices to fail, a network design that is easier to understand and
troubleshoot, etc.

If you do buy another switch, you could really go wild and design a
topology with more redundancy and fail-over in it! Use all the switches
maybe.

Re: ATM and Voice [7:39849]

2002-03-29 Thread Chuck

first off, I can't resist being a smart ass, as most list members who've
been around more than a couple of weeks will tell you.

secondly, with regards to the Lab topology, the Soltie book doesn't even
come close, based upon my last visit. that is not to say that Soltie is not
worth studying. He covers the issues quite well indeed. My point is that if
you focus on issues, as demonstrated in a number of study materials such as
Soltie, Caslow, BootCamp, IPExpert, and others, you will acquire the skills
that are necessary to pass. the core topics are no secret - and the biggest
and most important thing one can spend time on is redistribution between any
two routing protocols over any network topology or link. The success of
accomplishing this, or the lack thereof effects reachability, and if you
don't have reachability, none of the other stuff will work, be that voice,
dlsw, ipx, or anything else they throw at you.

with regards to your subsequent question, I'm in pre-sales myself, and I
often use my home lab to mock up customer networks and test concepts for
designs I am proposing. I don't have ATM, but I like your idea. I have not
priced this out, but I would thing that T1 ATM would be sufficient. If you
can do ILMI and various kinds of QoS that would be great. Sure wish I had
the capability. Having the LS1010, if you had edge equipment such as 3810's
or 2650's with the ATM module, so that you could emulate a cloud, I can see
the practical advantage, not to mention the advantage for study.

Regards

Chuck

RE: Switch Design Question [7:39888]

2002-03-29 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

Isn't the issue of the maximum number of cascaded switches mostly a
questions of how long it would take to reconfigure the spanning tree when
problems occur? A max of 7 is recommended based on the timing of
Configuration BPDUs, etc.

I don't think it's really an issue of how much latency is involved in
forwarding frames. The delay can be as small as 10 microseconds for 64-byte
Ethernet frames crossing high-end switches.

In this particular design, reconvergence of the spanning tree isn't really
an issue. His network is just one linear branch of a tree no matter how you
look at it! ;-) Of course, he could fix that

Re: Switch Design Question [7:39888]

2002-03-29 Thread Chuck

In the topology given, the real bottleneck is the wireless bridge ( assuming
11 meg shared ), and of course the ISP link speed.

the switch to switch latency is not the killer here.

other factors are numbers of users, especially the numbers crossing the
wireless link. These suckers still tend to be half duplex.

you running full duplex into your other switches?

RE: SSH client for windows 95 [7:39869]

2002-03-29 Thread Kent Hundley

John,

3 ways to verify the host key:

1) Connect over a network which you have a reasonable degree of confidence
is secure. This would normally mean connecting over a LAN to the host in
question to get its key. For the truly paranoid, this would mean connecting
over a x-over cable to the host in question.

2) Have someone send you the host key and then cut and paste the key into
the appropriate file. To have a degree of confidence you would have to
receive the key through some fairly secure means, i.e. have a floppy fedexed
to you, sent imbedded in an email with PGP, etc.

3) Call the person who manages the server, connect to the server, get the
key and have them verify the received key over the phone. (this is proabably
the easiest method)

The keys are stored in files on each host. For example, using openssh, the
hosts key is normally stored in a file called ssh_host_rsa_key.pub.
Different client ssh programs store the public keys of the servers they talk
to in different places. F-Secure's ssh client store them in a directory
called 'hostkeys' and they have names like 'key_22_10.1.1.1.pub'.

HTH,
Kent

So if I understand, a 2620 router with a Fast Ethernet intf. with IP Plus

absolutely true that you need IP PlusHas anyone got it working with just
the IP feature set with ISL trunking? The reason I ask is the IP Plus

could have helped :-)

You may want to check out the Partner E-Learning section of Cisco's website.
If you have a CCO id you can access some of their VoD and web based FREE

What type of FXO card are you using?

VIC-2FXO ?

I was speaking with one of our local Cisco office SE's and they are pushing

Just a though.

They are the same list price still.

CCNP Study Kits [7:39911]

2002-03-29 Thread dawn davis

Sorry for the repost again but the buyer backed out at the last minute.

I am selling brand new student kits for the following exams/classes to
attain the CCNP certification. These are the actual materials/kit they gave
you if you enroll in classes like BCRAN which cost about $2,000+. Each kit
contains 2 volumes of book, CD, etc.

These student kits are very very helpful in passing the exam. You will know
what I mean, after you read and study using this, and pass the exam. Go to
the exam blueprint in the Cisco website and compare the sections of the exam
to the chapters of this materials and you will know I have the following:

BCMSN - SWITCHING
BCRAN - REMOTE ACCESS
CIT - TROUBLESHOOTING

Email me an offer for the 3 of them or anyone of them

A quick glance on the feature navigator afirms that you need the plus
version. Memory is much cheaper if you don't buy it from Cisco!!!

Min. IOS ver./Feature Set to run ISL trunking?? [7:39913]

2002-03-29 Thread Cisco Nuts

Hello,
The following link (http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/50.shtml)
states that the min. ios ver and feature set for isl/802.q trunking on a
Cisco 2620 is 12.1(5)T and 12.1(5)IP PLUS?
Is there any way that it can be done with 12.0.7T or 12.0.5T1IP/IPX feature
set?
Can someone please confirm this?
Thank you.

AS5301 modem question [7:39917]

2002-03-29 Thread Michael Douglas

I have a 5301 that I'm trying to deploy. It has a quad T1 card in it. Is
this where the modems are? It also has (2) AS53-CC2-DM cards in it. One of
the AS53-CC2-DM cards has modems in SIMM slots 1 & 2. I'm not sure if they
are 6 or 12's. My question is this, if they are sixes, does this mean I have
only 12 modems total with this unit, or if they are 12's does this mean I
have only 24 modems with this unit? If so, what good is the Quad T1 card? I
just need a little help. Thank you.

RE: Switch Design Question [7:39888]

2002-03-29 Thread Mark Odette II

I was gonna say, perhaps the Switch2 has a Fiber connection, and thus the
Switch3 was put in place because of lacking port density. Is it going to be
cost effective to by a replacement larger switch with a Fiber port on
it -just- so you can consolidate space/hops?? Of course, this is assuming
that the distance b/t SW1 and SW2 is more than 100 meters, perhaps between
buildings. If this is not the case, and the Fiber is simply providing a
"Fast" Switch-to-Switch uplink and they are within the same closet... I
would think that, providing "Money is not an issue", than why not
consolidate all switches into one big switch.

I agree though... if it's just a thang about speed to the 'Net then the
Switches are the least of your worries... unless they are old, flaky,
begging to be decommissioned so they can RIP :)

I guess the big question is, where is each switch Geographically located,
and of course... "What Problem Are You Trying To Solve?!?!" :-)

Happy Easter folks! (for those who observe it)

Mark

Job opening [7:39916]

2002-03-29 Thread Patrick Ramsey

Hey guys/gals,

I realize this is not a job posting forum but wanted to give this to the
list before we posted on monster... :)

My manager is leaving for a new job and we have decided to replace her with
an engineer and divy up the managerial chores she once handled between the
team members. (adding a body to the on call rotation is the key drive
here!) :)

We are in the Atlanta area (Windy hill rd) if any are interested. Our
network consists of around 40 smaller sites and 5 major facillities.

(sonet mesh/45mb frame/t-1 up to shaped 6mb back/gig core/mixed dark fiber)
blah blah blah. about 100 servers, 80 or so intel/novell/nt, the rest
*nix (oh and 1 linux! ) :)

This is not an entry level position. Certification is not required and
frankly we could care less as long as you fit the bill. We would prefer
sombody with strong troubleshooting skills outside the realm of
connectivity. Connectivity is constantly called on to solve problems with
applications/workstations/servers and must have an open mind towards problem
solution.

(this is a 24x7 operation so you will be on call!)

Please do not respond to the list!

oh...and you must like linux... :)

FD change in EIGRP [7:39918]

2002-03-29 Thread Hamid Ali Asgari

Hi group,

I was studying EIGRP on Jeff Doyle's Roting TCP/IP and came to a
question: When is the FD for a destination updated and what triggeres
the FD to be updated?

In the followong scenario would FD change or not:

In an EIGRP environment, a Router (RTC) has 2 feasible successors to
network 10.1.7.0; RTA & RTB. Currently RTA is the seccessor so RTC's
FD to 10.1.7.0 is the locally calculated metric through RTA. RTA's
link to 10.1.7.0 fails and RTB becomes the new successor. Now will
the FD on RTC change (increase) or not?

Any inputs will be appreciated,

Hamid

FD change in EIGRP [7:39922]

2002-03-29 Thread Hamid Ali Asgari

I found the answer on EIGRP's white paper: Yes the FD will be
updated.

But on Jeff Doyle's Routing TCP/IP, chapter 8 before figure 8.15 it
says that the FD will remain unchanged at Lilienthal:

Because the distance to 10.1.7.0 has increased and the route did not
become active, the FD is unchanged at Lilienthal.

Can anybody explain why FD remain's unchanged?

Thanks,

Hamid

AGS+ parts needed! [7:39921]

2002-03-29 Thread Greg Macaulay

Hi all,

I recently purchased an AGS+ on eBay and unfortunately it was damaged in
shipment. Please don't waste BW telling me the shortcomings of the AGS+
over the 2520 series -- I already know that -- but cost was a major factor!

Anyway, the area that was damaged was the on/off switch. Also the metal
guard around the switch and the back plate. Very simply, the seller did not
package the router correctly and left a space between the rear of the router
and the side of the box. During shipment, the router probably constantly
slid back and forth, with the switch each time hitting against the side of
the box and whatever solid object was on the outside. The plates probably
can be reshaped with some careful "banging" and "tapping." But the main
item is the on/off switch!

It has a neck which broke off from the main part of the switch with each
part having a part that the other needs for the whole to function.

In any event, I have searched the CCO to no avail!! Does anyone have any
idea as to how/where I can obtain a replacement switch?? Any and all
suggestions will be quite welcome.

Thanks to all in advance.

Spanning Tree Enhancements [7:39920]

2002-03-29 Thread Urooj's Hi-speed Internet

Hi Folks,
Can someone please answer my following questions regarding various IEEE
Standards that have been advanced to enhance the Spanning Tree Protocol:

1. Has some vendor implemented the 802.1V, 802.1W, and 802.1X standards in
their equipment ?

2. If yes, then has it resulted in addition of more switching commands to
augment STP implementation ?

3. With STP enhancements, is there a possibility that Ethernet networks can
rival SONET's restoration times of 50msec or less in practical reality ?

Any information will be welcome. TIA.

Re: Traceback message [7:39887]

2002-03-29 Thread PING

Tracebacks are HEX dumps that, when decoded, tell the exact story of
which process or harwdare/software components and routine casued the
problem. Usually in case of exception or crash.
IOS Developers use so called "symbol files:" to decode these messages.
They build the symbol files when the IOS image is built.

Name in ISDN mapping statement [7:39924]

2002-03-29 Thread Ali, Abbas

Hello Folks,

In ISDN configuration, there is an option to use hostname in the mapping
command. For example,

rtrA:

dialer map ip 138.2.80.2 name rtrB broadcast 2005

rtrB:

dialer map ip 138.2.80.1 name rtrA broadcast 2004

What is the main purpose of using the remote hostnames in the mapping
commands. I have tried all combination and it works just fine without it.

If I remove name from one side, I would still be able ping between each
other and vice versa.
If I remove name from the both sides, I would still be able to ping.

Tried CCO, but no real explanation.

Regards,

Ali

Its for use with CALLBACK secure and so on, its a way to verify that the
calling router dialing the called router is the right one. It uses the
hostanme, so the name rtrA is actually the hostname of rtrA.

Its for callback secure.

Cheers

RE: AGS+ parts needed! [7:39921]

2002-03-29 Thread Daniel Cotts

It's been awhile since I saw an AGS+ so I hope that the following applies.

If cosmetics is not an issue then I'd suggest any old AC power switch that
can be purchased at Radio Shack. If necessary, let it hang out of the case.
Just make sure that no energized bare metal parts are exposed. They sell
shrink tubing and other such coverings that can be slipped over wires and
terminals. The covering is then shrunk to fit by applying heat.

CoS on 6500 [7:39929]

2002-03-29 Thread Thomas

Hi All - I am having "priority default" value of 5 for Class of Service on
Cisco 3548s. I wonder what value should I should on other Cisco switches,
say 6500s or 4000s? Is it the same value of 5 for the CoS on these Cisco
switches? Thanks!

Thomas

RE: Router question.. [7:39788]

2002-03-29 Thread Daniel Cotts

A sample config with secondary ip addresses might look like:
int e0
  ip address 10.1.2.1 255.255.255.0 secondary
  ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0

If you were to connect a hub to that interface you could assign connected
PCs to either subnet. Those PCs could communicate with each other. If you
have the equipment, create a small lab to verify this.

If the same scenario as above were repeated, but this time a switch was
substituted for the hub - it would still work. All switch ports would be in
the same VLAN. The switch is clueless about the ip addressing of the PCs.
While this is possible - it is not best design practice.

Larry's prior post also mentioned using trunking between the router and
switch. In that case, the switch would be divided into "virtual switches" by
assigning groups of switch ports to seperate VLANs. PCs associated with
different VLANs cannot communicate without benefit of a routing function.
Usual practice is to associate an ip subnet with a VLAN. If there were two
VLANs and the local router had two or more Ethernet interfaces then a
switch port from each VLAN could be connected to its own router interface.
Nothing fancy here. Not much different from two hubs. As the number of VLANs
grew it would chew up switch and router ports. Read 'gets expensive fast.'
Again, if you have the equipment - try it.

A better solution is to use trunking. One switch port is connected to one
router port. aka "Router on a stick." The switch port is configured to do
trunking. Encapsulation is determined. The router interface would be
configured with subinterfaces corresponding to the various subnets and their
associated VLANs. The encapsulation would match that configured on the
switch. My guess is this is the solution desired by Ricky's boss.
