Dennis,

   Propagate NEXT_HOP unchanged to eBGP
Ability to advertise BGP prefixes to an eBGP peer without modifying
the next-hop value
Used in VPN and non-VPN MPLS networks to set up end-to end LSPs
Ability to set NEXT_HOP on a RR
Ability to set the next-hop to self on a RR when reflecting a path.
The neighbor x.x.x.x next-hop-self command will only effect routes from
eBGP peers (i.e. non-reflected routes)
The next-hop can only be modified for a reflected route via an
outbound route-map
   set ip next-hop 1.1.1.1

Why would you want to modify the next-hop of a reflected route?
If RR (the route-reflector) is using iBGP multipath then traffic
from R4 needs to come through RR for load-balancing purposes
If RR does not set the next-hop to self, all traffic from R4 will
go straight to R2

R4-RR-R2
| |
|___R3

RR#
router bgp 100
  neighbor 4.4.4.4 route-reflector-client
  neighbor 4.4.4.4 route-map foo out
!
route-map foo permit 10
  set ip next-hop 1.1.1.1

Codes that support the next hop modification for an EBGP neighbor: This
is id CSCdt84706 and is integrated in 12.1(9), 12.1(9)E, 12.1(9)EC

I have that equipment, but you can't simulate speeds of 2Mbps with that
cable (at least I couldn't, only up to 512 Kbps, I think this is a
limitation of RS-232), I think that with V35 Female DCE and V35 Male DTE you

load balance/share [7:50988]

2002-08-08 Thread Jason Owens

I am trying to lab up a scenario where I can load balance/share across two
routers (for redundancy) connected into an MPLS cloud. Additionally, I have
HSRP running between the two (I don't want to use MHSRP because I don't want
two gateways on the LAN). There is a direct connection between the routers.

I know I can use statics, however I want all traffic to be able to failover
to the remaining link if one goes down, instead of being being blackholed.

| |
Router 1---Router 2
 activestandby

I have tried with EIGRP, however I was having trouble with getting a default
route injected in (without using statics). Is there any way to do this?

Re: 3640 router [7:50951]

2002-08-08 Thread Michael L. Williams

We have two 3640s that we use for dial-up access very nice for that
purpose we have coming in to one of them 2 PRIs, then 48 MICA digital
modems... it rocks you can dial-in with ISDN BRI for ether 64 or
128Kbps (bonded) or handle analog dial-ins... The other has a single PRI
(only 18 DS0s active) with 18 MICA modems in it along with two T1s back to
our main office.

They work... they don't have problems 95% of the few dial-up related
problems are usually a password/authentication issues that are mostly caused
by the user anyway. The beauty of the 3640 or 3660 over the 2600s is
sheer volume you can plug alot of stuff into 6 slots, making it a very
versatile mid-level box...

RFC 2878 [7:50999]

2002-08-08 Thread MACSL

Hi,

I've been working with some guys at Qwest. They
informed me that their hand offs are all L3. Aren't
there situations where the hand off would be L2, but
terminating on a L3 device?

For example:

Qwest - L2 Networks L3 router
1.1.1.1/30 1.1.1.2/30

This can be solved with PPP Bridge Encaps.

I was wondering if anyone out there has used PPP
Bridging Control Protocol (RFC 2878)? If so I would
like to know how it is being used and on what type of
equipement.

Thank you in advance.

David,
I dont have any problems with speed over 512Kbps. Its all based
on what I set the clock rate to on the DCE end. I use both the
cables from kg2.com and V.35 cables in my lab. The only
differences i can tell are the cost and the fact that the single
back to back cable is easier to use in the lab.

FW: New CCIE Written Exam [7:50946]

2002-08-08 Thread Dennis Laganiere

It's a weird time right now because there isn't much out there yet. Your
right that I updated the free cramsession.com study guide; I've also updated
Boson #3 and I've got a new practice test coming out on Quizware.com in the
next few days. I'm sure everybody else is updating their stuff as well. In
a few months there should be lots of stuff, but right now you're caught in a
transition.

I'm up to my neck in this stuff because I've been updating all my materials
over the last few months, and that's going to continue for a while as I
continue to grow the question databases. If there are a number of people
getting ready for the new exam, we should start doing something together;
either here on groupstudy, at @!#$.com or off-line. I've been doing a
lot of work with my router pod recently to create troubleshooting and
configuration questions, and would be glad to help out.

Let me know if I can help...

RE: Remote Access Exam [7:50952]

"Braindump" is a four-letter word on this forum. Your chances of getting a
braindump from anyone on this list is about 0%, give or take 0%. You have
done the right things so far. Read the Cisco Press books, study the
blueprint, and take some practice tests. If you don't pass the exam, it
simply means that you don't know the material well enough. Study your weak
points and give it another go. Good luck!

CCIE Practice Labs? [7:50987]

2002-08-08 Thread Jason Viera

I apologize in advance if this topic frequents the study group, but I was
wondering what peoples' opinions are on the different practice labs for sale
out there. I have heard good things about the IPEXPERT Lab book, as well as
the labs from CCBOOTCAMP. I have been going through the CCIE Practical
studies book, as well as reading the Command configuration and reference
guides off of TAC, not to mention all of the other books(CASLOW,etc.) Can
anyone provide me with any insight or direction? Thanks in advance

RE: New CCIE Written Exam [7:50946]

I know that CCxx Productions will have their new guide out in about a month.
Other than that, I don't know if there are other guides that are available
yet. I spoke with Dennis about a two weeks ago and he told me that he was
updating his Boson exam. I'm not sure if it is done yet.

Right now, your best bet is to print out the blueprint and start going
through each topic. You'll need to know most of it when you take the lab
anyway!

Shawn K.

Disclaimer: I have written materials for CCxx Productions and
Boson/Quizware.

RE: CCIE WORTH IT? [7:50941]

2002-08-08 Thread Abu Mwalie

George,

Yes, I do think it is worth it.

I only have CCNA and CCDA, but the more I get into Cisco certifications, the
more I realize what amount of knowledge one gets if his goal is to acquire
solid knowledge.

True, the needs of industry will always change as technologies change, but
these Cisco certifications build on foundational knowledge which is going to
be around for quite some time.

I mean, though i do not know much about networking, if one has CCIE, that
person has a broad knowledge base (I hope), and he can easily adapt to
changing needs in the industry.

If you are able to do this thing, please do it.

Many years back, I was studying with some guys and they got good jobs
immediately after college while I continued toiling with books a little
more. Now, even though I may never earn more than they do, I feel they envy
my position (sorry!).

When you have good knowledge, coupled with relevant experience, you will
find your niche somehow. You can even be trainer like Pricilla
Oppenheimer... there will always be diverse needs in the society.

Yes I know that, but it also depends on the length of your cable, mine is
something about 3 meters, what about yours? (I use female and male DB60), I
see the
interface up/up, but in a few seconds it comes up/down, I tried it with

I am not so sure it is worth it. I had a CCNP, CCDP, and experience as a

your willing to make a huge sacrifice and really enjoy it then just not

RE: CCIE WORTH IT? [7:50941]

2002-08-08 Thread Vogel Matthew GS-11 CFAO/IRMD

I would like to add my 2 cents on this topic as well. This is a debate that
I have heard over and over and the answer is that it depends on the
individual person and what they wish to achieve with a CCIE certification.
A couple of points need to be made.

1. Certifications, including the CCIE, are not a guarantee of a job or a
particular salary. I am studying for the CCIE now and everyone tells me
that I am going to make six figures when I get my cert. I do not believe
that that will happen and I am not getting my cert for the money. I work
for the government for less than my peers and will continue to do so after I
get my cert. A government job has great benefits and good job security. I
also get to go home at 4:30 everyday.

2. Certification does not mean you know it all. True the CCIE is the
pinnacle of Cisco certs but is does not mean you know it all. There are
many more topics that are not covered in the CCIE that a person may not have
knowledge of. That is why there are multiple CCIE tracks.

3. Continuing one's education is never a bad thing. In the networking
world things change by the day. Working toward a cert and staying certified
is a good way to force yourself to stay up with the technology.

4. Better to have the cert than not to. If you are applying for a job and
their are two other candidates with the same experience level and training
but you have a CCIE cert and they do not, who do you think is going to get
the job? In today's job market every little bit helps. For ever person I
have heard say it did not make a difference when they got hired, I know
three more people that say a cert did make the difference. I know that my
certs, MCSE, CCNP, and CCDA helped me get my current job right after Sept.
11.

Like I said, it boils down to each individual making a decision. Personally
I am not going for the CCIE for the money or a job. I already have both.
The payback for me in the knowledge that I got the cert when others said I
could not. The prestige is also a good thing. To me it does not matter how
long or how much money it takes, I will be a CCIE before I die.

Matt

Re: Stange thing [7:50911]

2002-08-08 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

Please quote messages. Most people won't have the time or patience to go
back and see that this is a question about a 25xx (can't remember exactly)
serial interface that is up/up despite RTS being down. The encapsulation is
Frame Relay, if I recall.

He Shuchen wrote:
>
> I connected it to another 2501's serial 0.

How is it connected? Cross-over cable, two V.35 cables connected together,
modem eliminator, real network? Are there any CSU/DSUs in the picture,
internal or external? Which side is DTE and which side is DCE?

> It did work.

For how long? Is it still OK? This result could indicate a hardward problem
with the serial interface.

> I can
> successful ping each other and my router's OSPF process had

RTS should be asserted by the DTE side along with DTR. But it's possible RTS
doesn't really matter if the other ones are up. Have you tried a different
cable? Have you tried a different serial interface? Do you still get the
same results?

What version of IOS is it?

The only real discussion I could find on CCO about RTS being down had to do
with low-speed, half-duplex serial lines. It seems to matter then.
Otherwise, maybe it doesn't??

The article I found is here:

ISDN DDR acting oddly...HEEEELP [7:51019]

2002-08-08 Thread Edward Sohn

Hello,

I have two 2503 routers connecting together via ISDN through a Teltone
ILS-2000.

I *believe* that the ILS is configured correctly, as well as my SPIDs
and DNs on my routers. I set the "backup interface BRI0" on the calling
router, and it's verified in standby mode (sh ip int brie). I tear down
the s0 interface (frame relay) and the call comes up, no problem. OSPF
reconverges, and I receive the routes through the ISDN connection.

Now, the weird thing (if it's considered that), is that the called
router CANNOT have the backup interface command. Because if it does,
the call NEVER comes up. Once I take out that statement, however, the
call comes up immediately.

Now, I guess my question/issue is: can't the called router be in "backup
interface" mode as well as the calling router? I seem to have run
across many lab situations where both sides needed to be able to
initiate the call, but I can't seem to get it to work that way (case in
point: Solie's CCIE Practical Labs I).

I've been busting my brain trying to figure this out. I *may* have my
Teltone configured wrong, but I don't think so. It could also be my
ISDN spids, etc, but if the call comes up and the link establishes up to
layer 3, doesn't that prove that all those configurations are correct?
And that there is some issue about the backup interface commands?

I can't seem to find anything on CCO regarding having both routers
configured for DDR or not...Someone, please shed some light on this
situation.

thanks,

Eddie

Not understanding [7:51020]

2002-08-08 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

I am seeting up a local network in a company with DSLAMS connected to one
Cisco router 7500 for outband and a Redback router for the inband. The
gateway for the inabnd is the redback and the gateway for the outband is the
Cisco.Redback in turn turns traffic through cisco.

The company is developing Network Management applications to manage the
DSLAMS.Most of the DSLAMS are configured for inband through an ATM PVC.

The applications are java based and is running on solaris platforms.

Strange to me!When this applications are run on the Solaris platforms, the
particular station looses connectivity to the particular DSLAM.When I shut
down the application, the ping will be succssful for a while and again it
looses connectivity. This is a non stopping process till we reset the
SUN.This is happeninig irrespective of the SUN but with respect to the java
based application on the Sun.From any other SUN platform at the same time I
can ping the DSLAM.

All the SUn machines are on the outband which tries to access the DSLAMs on
the inband.

at the same time , i tried to ping from windows as well as another Sun
station to the DSLAM and both are working fine except in some 1/50 times the
Sun doesn't succeed but the Windows is always successful.

Is there anybody who can explain what is going in my network or in the Sun
stations?

Is it a problem of the network?(Why is it possible to reach from some other
station)
Problem of the Inband?(How to see the traffic on the inband, arp table etc...)
Problem of the Sun station?(Why the brand new Sun stations alone times out
in some cases)
Problem of the Application?(??)

Any help appreciated.

If the original sources are too hard to come by, Uyless Black's Physical

RE: ISDN dialup on Win NT server [7:50929]

2002-08-08 Thread ss ss

Thanx Mr.Richard Botham for ur reply.I am sorry for not mentioning that I hv
this ISDN link connected to the WinNT server thro the serial prt of the
machine & I am not using any Cisco router.

My question:
I know it is possible to set threshold & combine both the channels. But I wud
like to know if I can use both the B-channels at a time i.e I wud like to
use both the B channels at all times. Is that possible?
Here in this ISDN modem there is a provision to set the threshold for
Multilink ppp.I hv set the threshold as 1Kbps to bring up the second B
channel so that I cud use both the B channels at a time. But still it uses
only one B channel at a time. Can u provide some suggestions on this?

Hi All,

got a 2509 the other day. Trying to use it as a dial out unit, along with
tactical softwares port director (creates a virtual modem on your desktop,
whilst really using the NAS as the dial out device). As I dont have the
appropriate cable yet, can some one tell me if my config here would do the
job of making and accepting calls. I know I dont have any chat scripts,
maybe this is why it will or will not work ?

Love for comments.

You should absolutely not believe that it will happen, at least not to a
100% certainty. Maybe it will happen, but maybe it won't. Just check out
all the CCIE's who are unemployed or underemployed (meaning they went back
to Unix sysadmin or whatever).

And even then you are not even close to knowing it all. Some of the best
minds in the industry are people like Cerf, Li, Rekhter, Katz, Perlman, and
each of them has probably forgotten more about networking than all the
CCIE's in the world put together will ever know. None of them have CCIE's.
Of course many of them do hold the title PhD.

That is one of the ways to stay up with the technology. But it's not the
best way. The best way obviously is to constantly make sure you're being
handed quality projects.

Well, when you look at it that way, then you can say that about anything.
Getting a PhD will help. Getting an MBA will help. Anything helps.

The real way to look at it is to do a proper cost-benefit analysis and
determine whether the advantages of getting a particular cert outweighs the
time and money it takes to get the cert. This analysis will obviously
depend on many factors - not least of which is who is paying (you or your
company), and on whose time are you doing the studying (yours or your
company's). My take is that if your company is willing to foot the entire
bill, including failed test attempts, and will also provide you with time to
study, then certs are clearly worth it. Otherwise, the choice is far less
clear-cut.

I configured the 2520 router as Frame Relay switch and connected it to a
2501 with a DTE to DCE v.35 Cross-over cable. It's my lab environment. The
2520 is DCE and 2501 is DTE. The 2520's RTS=down, but 2501's DCD=up DSR=up
DTR=up  RTS=up  CTS=up. It have up for several days. I think it's a hardware
problem with the 2520's serial problem. Other interfaces in 2520 are ok. and
I'm sure it's not a cable problem because I have used another cable.
  The IOS is c2500-i-l.121-7.bin.
