Re: Which is better?... [7:28532]

2001-12-08 Thread Frank Kim

This is just as easy as if you need to decide to run BGP or static route.

1) Is money important to you? if so, take the job that offers you higher
salary.
2) Is learning/experience more is more fun for you? if so, take the job
that you will think will allow you to play with more gears.
3) Is sex more important to you? take the job that you think will allow
you to meet pretty lady customers all the time which may allow you to
'score'
4) Finally, I think you don't know what is important to you that's why
you're posting the below question. You need to know what's important to
you. This is a crucial key in life and in everything! Your below
question can tell all of us that in the future, you may be posting another
question asking: hey guys, I understand rip and ospf really well but i'm
stuck, should i run rip on this large enterprise network with 200 remote
offices or should I run ospf...

Sorry for this nasty email but I hate to see techies folks like us in the
industry asking this sort of question. It makes others think as if we
only know our technical stuff and are so clueless in life.

Sniffer pro question [7:25247]

2001-11-04 Thread Frank Kim

Hi guys,
I appreciate for any input here. I'm trying to sniffer a specific port
that AIM(america online instant messenger) uses, which is 5190/tcp. I'm
currently using network associates sniffer pro version 3.5. Since there
wasn't a tcp/5190 port in the filter, I went into
Tools---Options---Protocols to add in the 5190/tcp for AIM. After
adding it in, I went to the Capture--Define-filter to try to select that
port but it wasn't listed in there. So here is what i'm trying to
do. I'm trying to sniffer hostA which has an ip address of 192.168.1.1
and I want to sniff specifically for traffic that is using port
5190/tcp. What am I missing here if I try to make sniffer pro to do
it? Thanks for your help.

traffic utilization for Cat IOS vs CatOS [7:25115]

Hi guys,
Usually, on a cat3524-xl or cat2924-xl series switches, I can look at the
stats on how much bandwidth is being used on each port by sh int
fast0/1. Let's say I want to do the same on a cat5500, looking for how
much bandwidth is used on port 2/10. What is the same command? I can't
seem to find the command that will give me a good 5min average of how much
bandwidth is being used on a cat5500. show port or show top is so
unhelpful. show top will take an hour to output out anything. Okay, I'm
exaggerating. It doesn't take an hour. But it's a long time. Thanks for
any input. Please send all replies directly to me.

Re: is this 4700M bad? [7:20630]

2001-09-20 Thread Frank Kim

I had similar problem with the 4500/4700 series router. My problem was
that during air shipping, the routers were bouncing up and down. As a
result of this, the cpu became kinda lose. So I opened up the router,
took out the cpu and tightly inserted it back in. Voila, I got something
when I booted up.

I only have experience with 2500 routers. I connected to a 2500 router and
got output, then without changing anything, took out the console cable from
the 2500 and put it in the 4700M with a console cable sub25 to rj45 adapter
that comes standard with cisco console kits. Nothing appears. I've searched
cisco.com and believe I've found the hyperterminal settings are to be the
same as a 2500...9600, 2 stop bit, no hardware flow, so am left thinking
the
adapter is bad, but brand new (I believe 3rd party console kits). The power
light comes on in front. There are 3 2port ethernet modules plugged in it.
The OK light only comes up on the far left one. But, I also put in a live
ethernet cable into each port and properly get a flashing link light, so
 think those are fine.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

 Thanks,Marcus

long wait for TELNET sessions [7:20016]

2001-09-14 Thread Frank Kim

Hi folks,
Please advise me on the below:

PC1-PIX--Router--RouterPIXPC2

PC1 = nt-box
PC2 = unix box

framerelay is connected between the two routers
PIX codes are 5.2(6)

My problem is that when I initiate a telnet session to PC2(unix box), the
tcp session establishes right away. But I have to wait for about 30-60
seconds to see the login screen.

What is the potential problem in this? Is it on the pix or on the

Can you filter a subnet on a sniffer pro? [7:18168]

2001-09-01 Thread Frank Kim

Hi guys,
I'm using sniffer pro 3.0 on NT platform. I am able to filter a single
host or any host. But I cannot filter a subnet, for example,
10.10.10.0/24. I have tried entering in all sort of combination such as:

10.10.10.*
10.10.10.*.*
10.10.10.0/24
10.10.10.0 /24
10.10.10.0/255.255.255.0
10.10.10.0 /255.255.255.0
10.10.10.0 255.255.255.0
10.10.10.any
10.10.10.
10.10.10.0

What am I missing? Or maybe this sniffer software doesn't support a
subnet filtering? If that's the case, then it's rediculous. Because it
does support 'any' which is everything.

Thanks for any input.

Booting in rom-mode on a cat5500 [7:13916]

2001-07-26 Thread Frank Kim

Hi guys,
I got a cat5500 originally running on 16megs of dram and 8megs of flash on
some old ass code. I took out that 16megs dram stick and traded it off
for a carnesada burrito. Luckily, I had a 32megs dram stick left so I
plugged it into the cat5500 and it worked like a champ. After finishing
my burrito, I got so hyped. So I decided to upgrade the old ass code to
some new kick ass code, which was 5.something. I dont'
remember. Everythign went smooth. The new code was rocking and
rolling. I was able to use some new features such as cntrl-p to repeat
commands and question to list out some options. So basically I was stoke.

Two weeks later, I got so broke. I traded my 32megs dram stick with my
next door amigo for his old ass 16megs simms and another burrito. So that
nite, my tummy was full, well satisfied.

Okay, now here i am with my small ass 16megs dram stick in the cat5500,
trying to boot up a code that is too big. It would boot to the point
where it asks for the password, then it restarts again. So, my question
is: is there a break sequence key that I can enter to bring me into
rom-mode so I can rescue this baby? Thanks for any advice.

And please dont tell me to take out the 8meg flash sticks and replace it
with a blank 8meg flash stick to make the switch boot to rom-mode by
itself. This will work for me, but unfortunately, my poor ass does not
have money to buy another 8meg flash.

If someone feels offended with this email, please don't be. Today is my
'ass day'. So give me a break. I only get to use the ass word once every
365 days.

Updated: Cable modems two 2501s [7:13649]

2001-07-24 Thread Frank Kim

You can actually do a lot of interesting policy routing and load balancing
with both dynamic and static routing if you use two 2501s with two dte/dce
cable. I would load the 2501 with 12.1(2)T codes or higher so it can pick
up the ip address via dhcp from cable modem provider. Uplink the
cablemodem to the 2501's ethernet0 port. From that 2501, connect the two
serials back to back with the other 2501. Then your second 2501 will have
another ethernet0 going to your internal LAN. You can then do nat'ing on
the first 2501. Below is your a little diagram to help you visualize
better:

R2(s0)---R1(s0)
Hub-R2(e0) R1(e0)--cable-modem-internet
R2(s1)---R1(s1)

You just need to enable nat'ing on the R1 and assign a private block on
the R1, something like 192.168.1.0/24 should be sufficient.

ram and you're running 12.2.2T code, assuming that you're running
enterprise or higher level such as for ssh, you probably using about 1/3
of your ram just for loading the ios code. So you don't have much. I
would stick to 12.0xT codes at ip-plus level if all you're doing is bgp on
that router. That will definitely use less memory.

rate-limit(car filter) vs traffic-shape [7:12355]

2001-07-14 Thread Frank Kim

Hi folks,
Can anyone give a good explaination for the above? Mainly, what's the
difference, and in which case would you use one or the other. I'm
currently using car-filter now and it works great! But I'm just curious
if I can make traffic-shape do the same function as rate-limit. For those
that don't know, these are all interface commands. Thanks for any help.

Re: Problem On PIX Hardware [7:12084]

2001-07-12 Thread Frank Kim

Steiven,
It sounds like those users who have logged in were using PAT(single ip
nat'ed). If that's the case, then your ACS/pix can only see one single
ip. Only enhance you can change on the pix is to change the time-out to
be as low as you can without annoying users logon process.

immediately ask for the authentication when first time to access to

internet, It doesn't ask for any authentication. Just straight away

Re: 4000 verses 4500M and 4700M [7:12154]

2001-07-12 Thread Frank Kim

Ahmed,
The 4000 can go up to 16megs of ram. With the 'm' added to it, which is
'memory enhanced', it can go up to 32megs of ram. There is also a major
difference between the 4000m vs 4500m. The cpu on the 4000m is a weak ass
motorola 40mhz cpu. While on the 4500m, you get a 100mhz RISC cpu. With
the new 12.2 ios, you can even do MLS and 802.1q vlan routing on the 4500m
with just 10mbps ethernet interfaces. Now with the 4700m, you can
potentially go up to 64megs of dram. The cpu on that is the same as the
4500m, but it's 133mhz instead of 100mhz. Some cheap companies like mine
still use a 4700m for bgp routing. Of course you have to run older codes
for it such as 11.3 in order to have enough ram to store full bgp table,
assuming you're using 64megs of ram.

If you wish to get a 4500m with 2 ethernet ports to do 802.1q vlan
routing, you can get it from me also. I purchased about 50 of these 4500m
when i found out that it can do vlan routing on just 10mbps ethernet
interfaces, on 12.2 code of course.

Re: Net Appliance vs. Cisco [7:11831]

2001-07-10 Thread Frank Kim

I used to deploy massive F760 netapps. They were great for NFSing; but
they were also very heat-sensitive. You may check your
datacenter/computer room to make sure it provides enough cooling before
throwing those netapps in there. As far as pricing for netapps, they are
'expensive'. For SAN solution, I would look at EMC/Storagetek because it
is more cost efficient compared to netapps.

Just find any 4meg flash stick that you use for your 2500/4000 series and
plug it in there. You can then download the boot-image from CCO and tftp
it into there. Remember, this is just a helper image; it doesnt give you
full-feature ios commands/functionality. So you will still need to
download the full ios from cco as well and load it into your flash-ram.

Support of ISL/802.1Q in ethernet interface [7:6867]

2001-06-02 Thread Frank Kim

Hi folks,
I know ISL/802.1q can only be implemented with FE or GigE. Is there any
reason why ethernet interface isn't in the game? I know 10mbps is slow
but it's a useful feature for folks with 10mbps swithces online and don't
have routers with FE interface. I overheard somewhere that newer ios has
such feature for supporting isl/802.1q in 10mbps ethernet interface. Can
anyone verify this? Thanks for helping.

deleting flash and squeeze command on a 4500m router [7:6729]

2001-06-01 Thread Frank Kim

Hi folks,
I just did a delete flash:c4500-is-mz.113-11b.bin on my 4500m
router. Here's the output of sh flash:

gateway#sh flash

System flash directory:
File Length Name/status
  1 9028608 c4500-jk9s-mz.122-1.bin
  2 4003224 c4500-is-mz.113-11b.bin [deleted]
[13031960 bytes used, 3745256 available, 16777216 total]
16384K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)

Here is what I get when I try to run 'squeeze' to free up the space from
the deleted file:

4500M#squeeze
Translating squeeze

Translating squeeze
% Unknown command or computer name, or unable to find computer address
4500M#sque?
% Unrecognized command

My question is, how do i gain my space back without reloading? Thanks for
any advice.

computing power between 4500m vs 7000 with rsp [7:6731]

2001-06-01 Thread Frank Kim

Hi folks,
Is it true that the 4500m routers have the same cpu as the 7000 w/ RSP
routers? Check out the sh ver on each:

# on the 4500m
cisco 4500 (R4K) processor (revision D) with 32768K/16384K bytes of
memory.
Processor board ID 04008700
R4700 CPU at 100Mhz, Implementation 33, Rev 1.0

# on the 7000 w/ RSP
cisco RSP7000 (R4700) processor with 131072K/2072K bytes of memory.
R4700 processor, Implementation 33, Revision 1.0

The only main difference is the 7000 w/ RSP has higher capacity for memory
storage.

I know this isn't a big deal. But it seems interesting to me.

Router memory question [7:6710]

2001-05-31 Thread Frank Kim

Hi folks,
I'm confused with the output of 'show proc mem'.

On a 4000m, I have:
cisco 4000 (68030) processor (revision 0xB0) with 16384K/4096K bytes of
memory.

And my output for sh proc mem is:

4000M#sh proc mem
Total: 4745316, Used: 2492048, Free: 2253268

On a 2501, I have:
cisco 2500 (68030) processor (revision F) with 16384K/2048K bytes of
memory.

And my output for sh proc mem is:

R1sh proc mem
Total: 17852852, Used: 4281636, Free: 13571216
###

On a 4500M, I have:
cisco 4500 (R4K) processor (revision D) with 32768K/16384K bytes of
memory.

And my output for sh proc mem is:

4500M#sh proc mem
Total: 7890976, Used: 3305100, Free: 4585876

My question is, the total memory coming from 'sh proc mem' is relevant to
what? And how does such number exist? Thanks for any help.

Phil,
Yes you have misunderstood once again. Let me clarify. I sit on an NT
box. I use my mouse to click on start, then run, then i type in: telnet
192.168.1.1 2001 which brings me straight to the console of my 2501. Even
I am accessing my 2501 via a TCP session over the 2511, but it looks as if
the 2511 isn't there. Therefore, you can not use alias or type exit to
get out of that session. Because whatever 'character' you input into the
screen is for the 2501's console, not the 2511. So again, if a user has
made a telnet session to 192.168.1.1 2001, how can he exit out of that
telnet session WITHOUT having to 'close' the telnet application? Once
again, the 'exit' command nor the ctrl-shift-6 x cannot be applied in this
case. Let me know if I'm still confusing you.

RE: CLARIFICATION: 2511 with reverse-telnet [7:5686]

2001-05-24 Thread Frank Kim

Andras,
This is just my curiosity or should i say, my quest for
knowledge. Because I see there is a 'disconnect-chracter' under the
line configuration mode and I am not sure if we can set it to a certain
keystroke such as 'control-Y' or something similar which will tell the
terminal server: please kill my session.

COMM_SERVER(config)#line 1
COMM_SERVER(config-line)#disconnect-character 25

line 1
 no exec
 exec-timeout 0 0
 disconnect-character 25
 terminal-type vt100
 transport input all

a portion of 'sh line 1'

Special Chars: Escape Hold Stop Start Disconnect Activation
^^xnone - -^Y

The disconnect-character 25, which is a decimal equivalent of Control-Y in
ASCII.

So my question is, will this 'disconnect-character', in this case, it's
control-Y, tell the 2511 to kill the tcp session?

Re: CLARIFICATION: 2511 with reverse-telnet [7:5686]

2001-05-24 Thread Frank Kim

Let's make it simple. Let's ignore the factor that there is a 2501
attached to a 2511's line 1. Just plain simple. You have:

1) 2511 router with e0 = 192.168.1.1/24
2) an NT box with ip address of 192.168.1.2/24

Assuming that you have configured line 1 on the 2511 with transport input
all and the rest. You sit on your NT box and u telnet to 192.168.1.1
2001. Now you want to kill that telnet session. How will you do it
without closing the telnet application n or hitting a disconnect on the
telnet application nor getting into the 2511 and do a clear line 1. Hope
you know where I'm getting at.

2001-05-23 Thread Frank Kim

Customer has 2511, he has modem attached to one of the Async
line and that modem is connected to one of the Unix server, he is sitting
on an NT machine connected to ethernet interface of Router, he uses a
telnet program to get connection to modem on Async line and then dial into
Unix box. After he logs off from Unix he comes back to Modem prompt on
router, he doesn't want that , he wants to come back to Telnet prompt on
his NT machine.

Basically he wants the 2511 to drop the tcp connection when it sees a DSR
go low after the call.

Can this be done on a 2511? Thanks for any help.

CORRECTION: Re: reverse telnet [7:5655]

2001-05-23 Thread Frank Kim

Hi folks,
I know about the ctrl-shift-6 x. Please read my message again. I am not
telnet'ing from the 2511. I sit on another workstation which is on the
same network as the ethernet segment of the 2511 and I telnet from there.
Please re-read my question. Sorry for the confusion.

with this simple scenario all you need do is:

 control-shift-6 (all at one time)

 release

 and then type x

this should bring you back to the terminal server

then type the command: disconnect 1

r1 is gone and you're left with the terminal server connection

Below is my config of a 2511. My question is if I sit on another
workstation and telnet to 192.168.1.1 2001 which brings me to R1. Once
I am in, is there a 'key-stroke' I can enter in to have the 2511
terminate
my session? I'm currently closing out my telnet application to have the
session terminated. Thanks for any help.

CLARIFICATION: 2511 with reverse-telnet [7:5686]

2001-05-23 Thread Frank Kim

Okay guys. I am really sorry for the waste of bandwidth. But so far, I
think I have been misunderstood. Here is what I got:

1) 2511 with e0 = 192.168.1.1/24
2) one 2501, console's port is attached to line 1 of 2511
3) one NT box with ip of 192.168.1.2/24

I sit on my NT box and I initiate a telnet to 192.168.1.1 using port
2001. Remember, I am not doing it from a router. So ctrl-shift-6 x will
not suspend my session. What I would like to do is to be able to exit
from the telnet session by typing a keystroke such as control-] or
so. And one more thing, typing 'exit' does not work.

I apologize for all misunderstanding. Thanks for any help.

2511 terminal server with modem attached for dialing out [7:5520]

2001-05-22 Thread Frank Kim

Hi folks,
I need your help. I have a 2511 router with 16 async lines. I have a
modem attached to the first line, which is line 1. I normally allow my
users to sit on an NT box and telnet to the ip address of the ethernet
interface on the 2511 on port 2001 to get into the modem so they can dial
out into another unix box to get to its console. My question is, is it
possible to have the 2511 terminate the session if the user is
finished with his work? That is the user telnet to x.x.x.x 2001 to get
into the modem. From there, the user type: atdt 1800111 to dial into
another unix box. When he's done working on that unix box, he types
'logoff' and it will disconnect him from the unix box which in turn brings
him back to the line 1 session of the 2511. Is it possible to make the
2511 sense there was a drop on the connection from the modem to the unix
box so it will also terminate the line 1 session? I hope you folks will
get the picture i'm describing here. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

This was attempt 2. I changed my study habits from attempt 1, and therefore
testing technique, for my attempt 2 (you perform like you
practice..right?). It paid off. The change was to monotonously ping every
interface IP / IPX address from every router. I made a list of the
addresses
and ran through all of them from every router. I believe this lack of
attention to detail is what did me in on attempt one.

Time management was key. If I didn't know the config off the top of my
head, I skipped it. This allowed me to complete the entire day 1 portion 3
hours early. I had 4 areas that I needed to think about, so I saved them
for last. I methodically approached each of the 4 areas, knocked out each
requirement, and had 1 hour left to do the testing above. My strategy was
that no matter what, I would take the last hour to test thoroughly, I just
happened to get my 4 items done. Day 2 was the same way...although only 3
hours for the first part, I still had 45 minutes to test it all.

Troubleshooting was by far the most nerve-racking experience. I had a
trouble ticket list and was told to find as many problems as I could and
document/fix them (one liners). Unexpectedly I had to troubleshoot a
different network than the one I had spent a day and a half configuring. 3
hours was the time limit to learn a new topology, IP scheme, protocol
intent, and then fix as much as possible. I don't feel like I was ready
for
this, and must have just kept calm enough to manage it.

The waiting is a nerve killer. You wait before the lab starts about an
hour
for everything and everyone to get ready. You wait all night long for
status on day 1's score. You wait after day 2 build out...1.5 hours for
me to find out if you made it to troubleshooting. Then you wait while
they add up the points and spit a number out of the computer or not.
Howard was the best!!! Comic relief goes a long way to ease my stress,
and he delivered. I was very comfortable in the RTP environment.

 Study material used / frequency:
Caslow 2nd edition - read it cover to cover once.
Ccbootcamp labs - practiced daily (almost and minus weekends) for 4
months 4-6 hours per day on a rack of equipment that was very similar
to
the real thing. I was very comfortable with what was required of me for
day
1 and 2 build out. In retrospect I would have practiced a bit more on
troubleshooting. I was not comfortable with this at all and could have
used
some familiarity with strategy and tactic on this part.

Using a SCO unix box to manage a set of routers

Hi folks,
I have a sco unix box which I would like to have 4 vt100 terminals attach

be accessing my cisco lab. I'm running into a situation where I can only
hook up two vt100 terminals to my SCO unix box because the hardware is
Intel and the motherboard has only two serial ports(com1 com2). Where
can I get a serial cards that allow me to hook up 4 vt100 terminals to
that SCO unix box? I know this is a silly setup. This is a requirement,
not an option. Otherwise, I could setup those students to acess via
telnet. Thanks for any input.

QOS/traffic shaping question

2001-03-26 Thread Frank Kim

Hi folks,
Let's say within your 192.168.1.0/24 network, u have a
HostA(192.168.1.10/24) and you want to only allow HostA to use a maximum
of 10kbps of bandwidth for each of the incoming ip connection. So if
HostB(1.1.1.1/24) wants to talk to it, HostA will only reserve 10kbps for
hostB. Can this be done on a router using QOS? If so, please give me
some details. Thanks.

the freaky problem. Server 1 receives inbound email just fine, but its
outbound email to Server 2 will sit in the queue for a random amount of time
before being sent. I hooked up a Sniffer between Server 1 and the FW and
the majority of the traffic between the two servers showed "No Response".
When I decoded the traffic it looked like Server 1 was sending a reset
(RSET) to Server 2 and that is what was causing the problem. After some
research on CCO I found an incompatibility with older PIX IOS versions and
the "Mailguard" feature. It seems that the Mailguard feature didn't support
"ESMTP", which these Exchange servers are using. I thought I had found the
problem until I did a little bit more digging and found that this was fixed
in IOS 5.2(2) and later with the new support of RFC 1869 for SMTP Service

off is that A.) Inbound email to Server 1 has no problem. B.) The server
admin setup a test servers and both inbound and outbound traffic worked fine
through the PIX. C.) Server 2 isn't having any problems getting through the
FW. Now here is the kicker...D.) When I disabled "Mailguard" everything is
 said to be working normally!!

I might be paranoid, but I'm starting to think the Exchange guys made some
changes on Server 1 and are trying to lead me to believe that it was my FW,

Multilink T1's with ip cef

2001-02-20 Thread Frank Kim

Hi folks,
If you have three T1's coming from the same provider which go straight
into one single router and between you and the provider, you guys are
doing multigroup ppp with ip cef load balancing 'per packet'. Ultimately,
do you have the same kind of inbound/outbound bandwidth in this scenario
vs. the a fractional T3, committing at 4.5mbps ? Which one is better?

Thanks,

Black Hole Router vs NETOUT:connection reset by peer

2001-01-25 Thread Frank Kim

Hi folks,
I have one workstation and a server, one one each vlan, running ISL on a
cat5500+RSM between the two vlans. When I ftp from the workstation to the
server, I get really slow speed, about a couple kbits/s and eventually, it
times out with a meesage: NETOUT:connection reset by peer.

Here is what i use:
workstation = nt 4.0 workstation
server = nt 4.0 server with IIS4 acting as ftp-server

When I jump into another vlan where my hp-ux box is on and ftp to the
nt-server from there, i get excellent speed with 100% success rate. I've
search a few websites where they mentioned of a black hole router as a
cause. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

Hi guys,
Has anyone experienced speed or duplex negotiation between a pix 506

Re: 2511 access server configuration help

2000-10-22 Thread Frank Kim

Steven,
I'm assuming you're using a 2511RJ series. If that's the case, then
you're lucky. Just plug a straight-through cat5 cable from the 16 async
ports on the 2511 to your routers or switches console port. Then on your
2511, setup a loopback interface, giving it an ip like 1.1.1.1/32. So for
example if your switch's console port is attached to the first port on
your 2511, you can access the console of your switch from the 2511 by
typing "telnet 1.1.1.1 2001". If you have multiple sessions, you can
switch screens by breaking out "Control-Shift-F6 x" and then type another
session number to get into that session.

If you still have problems, feel free to call me up during business
hours.. I can walk you through. :-)

session number to get into that session.

If you still have problems, feel free to call me up during business
hours.. I can walk you through. :-)

Re: Why 53-bytes for a cell?

2000-10-20 Thread Frank Kim

You must be refering to ATM. The reason it's 53 bytes in a cell because
the first 5 bytes are used for cell-header information; the other 48 bytes
contain the payload, which is data.

Re: Fiber optics

2000-10-15 Thread Frank Kim

Do a search for "Peter Lothberg" on yahoo or other search engines and you
should be able to find many links on fiber optics.
