Team,
This morning I was able to pass the DQoS test, wow...what a rideThe test
is very hard if you don't have
the Course Book and the reason is because all the information need for the
test is very well put and organized by the course. All the information
required for the test is on Cisco's web but is very hard to find it, the
test follow the blueprint by the book. I want to give my special thanks to
Chuck Larrieu (The Long and Winding Road) for his support. I really
recommend this test for those who are in the process of taking the lab. The
following link will take you where you can
find all the information need for this test except the Course Book (fully
recommended). Well now to get back to the books for the CVOICE (another
animal) test.

A good starting point for the QoS on CCO is the following:

yes, on codes from 12.0 and up you can configure a virtual-tokenrin X
interface. Basically a loop back by another name but you can add source
bridge commands ect.

Has anyone taken the new CCIE Lab beginning Sept.4th? Pass or Fail?

So far, no one has provided any feedback since the 4th. I have been waiting
anxiously for someone to post something.

Did anyone see the new 3550 switches or the old Cat 5 or both??

How about any new stuff? MPLS, IPSEC, QOS on the 3550 etc. etc.

Anyone??

Sincerely.

RE: CISCO 3600 ROUTER DDR BRI IS ALWAYS CONNECTED 24 HOURS [7:52042]

2002-08-25 Thread Raul F. Fernandez

The reason the DDR is staying up 24 hours is the eigrp hello packeats are
causing the diealer to dial. The address that eigrp multicasts its hello
packets is 224.0.0.10. Your dialer list does not preclude eigrp hello
multicast address.

Your dialer list should go something like this :

First use extended access-list to blobk the eigro multicast address:

access-list 100 deny ip any host 224.0.0.9 --- prevents eigrp multicast
packets
access-list 100 permit ip any any

or

access-list 100 deny eigrp any any
access-list 100 permit ip any any

your new dialer list will read like this:

dialer-list 1 protocol ip list 100 - point to access list 100

also I recommend you disable cdp on both sides od the isdn connection by
using the command:
no cdp enable

Also since you are using PPP, you may want to implement chap authentication
since you are running no authentication.

Sincerely,

NLSP question and IPXWAN [7:51874]

2002-08-21 Thread Raul F. Fernandez

I was using 11.26 code the other day and was made to use ipxwan when using
ipx NLSP on wan interfaces then I went ahead and added 12.1 T9 code the
other day to play with dhcp on some interfaces and decided to add NLSP to
wan interfaces in the process to play around. Anyways in this case I did not
need ipxwan configured on the wan interfaces. My question is this, is this
change just for this T code or for all the 12.1 codes in production? Just
wanted feed back for anone thats seen the same thing. The documentation on
CCO says ipxwan should be used. I believe that you also need ipxwan for the
12.0 codes, anyways let me know.

Cheers,

Raul

Turn off spanning tree on the switch ports the router lan interfaces are

Is there a way to encrypt the snmp community strings? The strings are
security holes since there are tools out there (I know of at least one)
capable of deriving the RW strings, given the RO strings. Once the RW
strings are known, you can download the config files and hack the
passwords
although I'm yet to see enable secret passwords cracked (I could be

 Charles,

I have a 2523 and just adore it. From what I've found in my home studies
is
that even a low speed serial is good enough for testing. It's all about
routable ports and my 2523 has 8 low speed serials, 2 high-speed serials,
a
TR port and I think an ISDN too. I paid $800 for my 2523 with 16/16 which
at
the time was a decent price. I prefer to use that as my frame switch
rather
than my 4000. It's not like you'll be passing tons of traffic over these
links since it would just be in a lab environment so the low-speed serials
are good enough. Hope that helped.

I'd recommend using the following routers instead for a CCIE lab:

  2x 2501s
  2x 2503s (for ISDN)
  1x 2511 (reverse telnet AS)
  2x 2513s (TR/Ether)
  1x 2522 (frame-switch)
  ISDN Simulator
  Catalyst 5k switch

If you still want to add on:
  26xx routers with Voice
  3900 TR Switch

That is usually the formula that I suggest to people trying to build
home
labs. The 4000s are a pain in the butt to deal with and have given me
nothing but problems (hence I dont sell/buy them anymore). Make sure
  your
25xx routers have 16D/16F so you can run enterprise 12.x IOS.

I know that sales promotions are not allowed on this forum, but I need to
defend a false statement that was made earlier this week about our pricing

Howdy there folks, question for you. Studying for the BCRAN, I have a lab
with two 1602R's with BRI modules. I am simulating a FR connection with BRI
configured for backup in legacy dialer-string mode.

The backup works fine; ie. I pull the FR cable and the backup comes up, I
send interesting traffic and the BRI dials and routes the packet.

Problem is, even when there is no interesting traffic (even when I put an
access list on it with 'deny any') the BRI still dials periodically. As far
as I can tell it's about 90 seconds between.

At first I thought it was RIP. But I disabled RIP and it's still doing it!

Here's the config on the spoke router (note Hitchhiker's Guide reference =)

Hi Everyone,

For those who are interested in learning Cisco PIX but
do NOT want to spend a lot of money on buying an
expensive PIX Firewall, I think I can help you. I
have instructions on how to build a PIX firewall by
using a PC. In case you didn't know, PIX firewall is
essentially a PC with multiple interfaces. I've
successfully built several PIX firewall using my old
PCs (i.e. pentium 200 MHz processor). Actually, the
PIX1 series (obsolete I know) is a PC with Intel
EtherExpress Interface cards. However, you must have
an account with CCO in order the software and download
the software. The rest of the instructions on how to
build a PIX firewall using PC is very simple. Anyone
interested in learning it, let me know.

If dont want to use the DLCs and you are using a physical interface for
frame-relay just disable frame-relay inverse arp. If you dont want to do
that use point - to - point subinterfaces and define the DLCI you want to
use on the subinterface.

A few months ago I posted some configs that configure your routers for
APPN. This will allow you to test RSRB and DLSw configs. Is that what
you're referring to? If so, look through the archives for APPN and you
 should find the working configs.

You will need an IOS image that allows APPN to do this.

active, this keeps going and going through out the log. The local telco
insists that the circuit is overutilized and this is why the connection is
dropping. I think it is a telco or csu problem. Also doing a show

Is
there any way to tell for sure whether it is overutilization or a telco

RE: FrameRelay Over Utilized [7:13349]

CSICO routers prioritize the LMI packets so they will drop data frames
before LMI packets.
This was told to us by TAC.

Well, if it's really really overloaded, it can cause the circuit to drop if
LMI packets aren't getting through to/from the FR switch. But it's got to
be pretty chockers for that to happen.
You could bung traffic shaping on it and throttle back the traffic, so the
service isn't over-utilised, and see if you still get CRCs/errors/drops.
If you do, you then have some extra evidence to beat your telco over the
head with.

Is dlci 501 the only PVC on that service? If not, do the other PVCs drop
as well? If it's only one PVC affected, I'm not sure how over-utilising it
could cause the PVC to drop out.

Perhaps -- you may be correct -- however, it is also possible that there
are
other justifiable reasons for the change and that the restructuring will
be
as arduous and thorough as the original lab.

My read on what they are saying -- is that many of the fundamental tasks
(static routes etc) we should have mastered (or at least familiarized
ourselves with) during the CCNA/CCNP. However, I would be that while
those
tasks will no longer be graded -- you would still need a mastery of those
basics to be able to proceed with the tasks required of a one-day lab
(Hopefully!!!). Certainly the complexities of the more advanced tasks will
assume a strong understanding of the basics. But we'll see!!!

I do believe that the format IS changing to a one day lab, so it's
actually
taking the piss out of the reasons Cisco are giving for changing the
 format...

Personally, I think CCIE is THE most respected vendor certification out
there, so why change what (to my mind) has been a great format for
seperating the weed from the chaff?? In the end, the market will get
swamped with half baked CCIE's who have no substantive real world
experience
and the value of the cert will go down... much like the way the MCSE
went..

 thats my two cents

Re: Current Wait time on the lab [7:12713]

2001-07-18 Thread Raul F. Fernandez-IGLOU

First of all, unless they make the lab very easy this will not ever happen.
Unlike other certifications for this one you have to study and have hands
on. Most people say they want one but its hard to do due to real life time
constraints. I have my own home lab and it helps but so much material at the
core to get down cold. And really the way I look at is this, the routing and
switching CCIE should be the start and then you either go Security or ISP
CCIE. Plus I dont think any doggies will be interested in routing but a fire
hydrantthat another thing! :-]

Does this mean it is going to get easier or harder (hopefully the latter)
But I presume this means twice as many people can sit the lab per year.
How
long before every man and his dog has the CCIE ???

The labs in my humble opinion are good. I use them. They make you think and
are excellent material to help in the pursuit of the CCIE. Like everyhting
else, these labs are just tools and these tools will only get you so far. A
combination of reading, a lot of configuration(hands on) and
troubleshooting(hands on) and a little luck are keys. If I were you though,
I would worry about passing the CCIE written first. Anyway, why call him a

If this clown didn't pass the labs why would you go to him for study

I think this also means that you are going to see the prestige of the
certification
diminish. Part of the prestige is that only a few people in the world have
the
certification. If say 80- 85% of people taking the exam pass then
increasing the number
of people taking the exam will increase the amount of people that pass (more
people will
be certified at a faster rate). Part of the reason CCIE are paid so much is
that there
are so few out there. From a supply and demand perspective does this not
decrease the
monetary advantage of attaining the certification for the individual. For
Cisco this is
great ( more people being certified in their equipment at a higher level).
This comes
at an especially opportune time when the competition is beginning to creep
up on them.
What better way to market yourself than to say look at the amount of highly
trained
individuals out there who can support my equipment.

Folks,

This is but one of the e-mails I have seen on the subject, I think it looks
very promising myself:

Hello,
My name is Lorne Braddock and I manage Cisco's CCIE program. I wish to
address any rumors you may have heard about a so called one-day CCIE
certification lab. The apparent absence of background information on our
new exam's enhanced quality and content has resulted in unwarranted concerns
about it's duration.

The CCIE Program team has been working hard to redesign, and greatly improve
our nine year old, performance based, certification format. We have several
objectives in mind including improved: efficiency, relevance, effectiveness
and challenge. We also want to properly position the CCIE level
certification content with that of the CCNA and CCNP certification tracks
which came into being well after the CCIE expert level program was
established. From the standpoint of our exam architecture, we needed to
migrate toward a model that will scale to demand and position us to take
advantage of innovative delivery options that better utilize technology and
reduce the need for travel. Primary among all these objectives is our
determination to maintain the legendary quality that is implicit in the CCIE
name and reputation.

We began the process by identifying those aspects of our current CCIE lab
exam that are effectively covered in Cisco's CCNA and CCNP certification
programs. We also identified those skills that are tested several times
within the current exam. Content was evaluated based upon the objective of
ensuring that we were sufficiently covering all relevant topics. Where
appropriate, we shifted some of the lab's more fundamental, but still
necessary, questions into a new and expanded qualification exam. The
objective here is to do a better job of screening out candidates who would
have passed the current written qualification test with no realistic hope of
passing the lab exam.

After strengthening the written qualification exam, eliminating duplication
and lower level tasks, we discovered that adding an additional hour of lab
time would allow us to deliver a higher quality CCIE lab exam in one
expanded day. The overall testing process is reduced by far less than a day
yet there is no longer a need for customers to invest in a second travel
day.

There is no single consideration more important then the quality and
efficiency of this new exam so we have engaged several highly respected
industry notables in our beta testing process. It's too early for me to
announce the outcome of that process but I will say that the initial signs
look very good. We hope for and expect to get their constructive criticism
and plan to implement changes where necessary. If all goes well we will be
in a position to move forward with this improved format in August.

In review, our new testing format is a vast departure from our traditional
approach in that it takes into account the existence of Cisco's CCNP and
CCNA certification programs. There is no longer a need for the CCIE exam to
certify a customer's proficiency in the area of intermediate networking
skills. Our charter is to certify at the expert level and we now assume
that, if the customer has passed our enhanced written qualification exam,
their fundamental skills exist. By designing this recognition into our lab
exam, we can eliminate time consuming questions that test and give points
for demonstrating lower level skills. If the customer does not have those
skills, they will simply fail the lab due to their inability to deal with
the pace and complexity of the enhanced CCIE lab exam. Solid trouble
shooting skills are also a required part of the customer's ability to master
the enhanced lab exam so there is no longer the need to devote an entire
section to trouble shooting. An individual who knows what they are doing
will find our enhanced lab exam quite challenging. Someone who has yet to
fully develop their skills will find it impossible. The net result of this
format is greater efficiency in testing coupled with greater respect for our
customer's time and resources. We see that as a win for everybody.

Most people who are worried about the new CCIE lab exam format are concerned
about the ongoing integrity of our program. Rest assured that no one cares
more about the integrity of the CCIE program than we do. This new CCIE lab
exam embodies the best of what we have learned over the nine years this
program has been in existence and, from that perspective alone, it's the
best of the breed. Importantly however, this new format also positions us
to do some innovative things going forward that would not be possible
without these changes. The revised and improved format will position us to
handle the kind of exponential growth the CCIE program is seeing

Re: CCIE Written [7:9091]

Perhaps they undersetimated the amount of material and the little hidden

with is the statement that one of the guys made. He did not really care that
he failed but that he had seen it and now knew what to do. I think its
this kind of attitude which will cause him more problems. If he tends to
assume that the exam he took is the only blue print he will set himself up

 All,

I am looking forward to a run at my CCIE next year and I am trying to
visualize what the Lab test will be 'like'. I have read Cisco's material
and searched around a bit, but that info falls short of what I am looking
 for here.

I understand the lab consist of essentially two parts; build out and
troubleshooting. How are the Problems/requirements presented?

For example, are you given very high level requirements such as build a
scalable network and you make all the design decisions, or are you likely
to get more specific requirements such as; plan and addressing scheme to
conserve IP space and router resources, or even more specific like:
select and OSPF network type to use in your network?

In the troubleshooting section, do they insert faults that you have to
discover, or do they provide you with at least some clue of which high
level
functionality may or may not be working? Real world troubleshooting is
usually in response to observed problem, or issue. Is it fair game to
have
something tweaked in the configs that is not expressed in any level of
functionality, or lack there-of, on the test pod?

Are the problems presented in writing, orally by the proctor, or both?

Do you deliver to the proctor diagrams, and notes, or just the configs and
 cableing on the routers.

Are you required to orally defend your design?

I am not interested in info that violates the agreement with Cisco, just
any
input that can help me visualize what it will be like.

 Thanks!

Re: ISDN demonstrator [7:3842]

2001-05-09 Thread Raul F. Fernandez-IGLOU

I was able to pick 2 NT1s on e-bay for less than 50 bucks a piece and I got
the demonstrator for 1685.00. Its significantly less than the 2685 price I
was quoted for the ILS-2000. The demostrator works fine and the
documentation is easy to read and get it up and running.

The difference in price between the Demonstrator and ILS2000 makes a
Demonstrator with two NT-1s less costly.
Consider the Emutel simulators from Arca Technologies.

 Mr. Fernandez,

Yes ! That is it -- using the serial port on the 2511 to connect to the
 serial port of another router.

I guess I'll have to set the serial port on the other router as DCE and to
provide 'clockrate' for the serial connection ?

Many thanks for sharing your experience.

 Alex,

Basically you need to plan for what security needs you may have. What I
 like
about nat overloading off the interface is that it is a routable ip and I
can telnet to the interface and use the routers. Just use common sense and
you should be ok. But NAT and enable secret should be enough to keep all
your systems ok behind the router. I know some may think not, but I have
never had a problem. I did have a friend try John the Ripper to try to
 force
break the enable secret and that took almost 3 weeks based on the password
 I
used. Make sure you use the enable secret and access-list. Also NAT by
itself is a wonderful deterrent to getting your systems hacked. Basically
you will need 1 extra routers (the way I do it) so that you can use the
serial interface from the 2511 connect to another router whose ethernet
interface goes to a hub or a switch. This is the way I did it. Now my home
lab contains 7 routers and a few switches. Once you get it running it is a
worth while exercise in the setup of NAT. Not to mention all the systems
that can gain access to the internet from behind ye old router.

 Good Luck,

 Raul

Our testing setup with obviously less load worked fine but when we moved

production the sessions started dropping. I have checked circuit load and
it
looks fine. Probably some DLSW+ parametes with some timing features or
problem with IOS is causing this problem. Or may be its related to 2600
 routers.
Is there anyone who experienced same kinda issues in past. Any comments.

RE: 2511 between cable modem and network [7:2312]

2001-04-27 Thread Raul F. Fernandez

Basically you need a hub, 1 router with an ethernet port and a cable modem.
You will need to assign the routable ip that you would get on your NIC to
the ethernet interface of the router. The trick is to have the cable modem
turned off then plug it into the hub and also have the ethernet interface on
the router plugged into the hub. Make sure router is up with the ip address
you would normally get as primary ip. Turn the cable modem on, it will see
the router ethernet interface and grab the mac address and return it to the
UBR or whatever. You will then need to configure NAT overload so it
overloads off the ethernet interface. I will gladly provide this config for
you below:

ip name server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx DNS server name provided by provider...get
this of winipconfis or ipconfig/all

interface Ethernet0
ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -ip address that the dhcp server
would usually give your nic
 ip nat outside

ip nat inside source list 7 interface ethernet0 overload - defines which
address inside may use NAT overload off the ethernet

access-list permit any - I only have a few system behind everything that
need to get out so this is sufficient

This works folks. I am using a 2511, sure there maybe other ways but I did
not want to bid on a 2 ethernet port 2500 router.

Raul,
Please explain what you mean by 1 Ethernet interface. All cable/DSL modems
I have workd with(It has been a lot) have a Ethernet handoff. You need 2
Ethernet interfaces to connect a cable modem to a router and then to your
LAN. Also, I have not been able to get an IOS version for the Cisco 4000
that does IP Address DHCP as needed to be a dhcp client. I am currently
doing it with a Cisco 2514.

looks fine and HSRP is tracking the serial interface.

Any suggestion as to why RTR-B is not in standby state and how to resolve

Roger,

I ran into the same problem you had. You want to run enterprise images with
all the bells and whistles and be 12.0 ver.

The only wy was for me to up grade all of my routers to 16 meg flash. Yes a
bit costly but in the end to be able

to get things done well in a home lab is to have an IOS that have the
multifuntionality that will be found on those routers

which you will be tested on. The 11.1 enterprise image will run on 8 megs of
flash. also the enterprise plus in 11.2 will

also run on 8 megs of flash.

Hi All,

Just wanted to hear what other people are using (or would recommend) for the
IOS images on their 2500 series routers with a typical 16MB DRAM/ 8MB Flash
setup.

I remember hearing from Louie that he ran 12.09 Enterprise Plus IOS on all
of his 2500's with that 16/8 configuration. There's a 12.7 version but it
won't fit on only 8MB of flash space. Does this mean that I should I
consider upgrading to 16MB flash instead?

On another note, can anyone recommend a good reference for knowing which
type of IOS images to use? Like how I can assess whether I would want to
use a Service Provider image rather than an Enterprise image, or an IP
Image, or maybe even an Enterprise/FW/IDS IPSEC image. I'm trying to find
out more information on what requirements would prompt me to choose one over
the other.

I've only been able to find a few docs on CCO and they haven't helped me
much.

Any info is always appreciated!

Thanks,

John,

depending on the code version and the router type this can be caused by a
relaod due to a bus error, or some interface problem with a protocol. My
suggestion is that you do a show stacks and go to the stack decoder at the
CISCO site.

Question about frame-relay map statements and frame relay inverse arp

2001-04-01 Thread Raul F. Fernandez

Dear Group,

I have been trying to duplicate the problem where if you enter a frame relay
map stament in a frame realy interface that is also using frame relay
inverse arp that inverse arp will be disabled for specific protocol for that
specific DLCI specified in the frame relay map statement.

I have reloaded my router, yet the interface still does inverse arp and is
able to keep the mapping to the hub and also ,of course, still has the
frame relay map statement.

My question is this, Has anyone else run into this? Also, I am running 12.09
code and I am wondering if this is something that has been worked around on
the 12.09 code.

Here is the interface config for the frame relay interface:

interface Serial0
 ip address 192.168.10.10 255.255.255.0
 no ip directed-broadcast
 encapsulation frame-relay
 frame-relay map ip 192.168.10.5 211

after the reboot I get this for the "show frame-realy map" :

Satellite2R5#show frame-relay map
Serial0 (up): ip 192.168.10.1 dlci 211(0xD3,0x3430), dynamic,
  broadcast,, status defined, active
Serial0 (up): ip 192.168.10.5 dlci 211(0xD3,0x3430), static,
  CISCO, status defined, active

According to Caslow books and other publication the spoke router should
loose connectivity to the hub router since since it is using frame relay
inverse arp to map to the hub router.
I have a 2523 as my frame relay switch. Anyway, I still maintain an inverse
arp mapping to the hub and do not loose connectivity to it. Anyone have any
input on this?

Thanks for your time,

Raul

 Hello,

I've hooked up my 2415 running 12.1(2)T to the CATV modem, but
 I'm having a
DHCP problem. Basically, the CATV company provides registered host names
(format: ab9-a.catv.area1.catv.com) and the host name must be in the
DHCP request packet, or the CATV system drops the request.

Sniffing my NT4 SP6a machine requesting an IP, I see the host
 name in under
the DHCP Header in the format:
 DHCP Host name = "ab9-a.tv.area1.center2.catv.com".

Sniiffing my Cisco router, this entry is "".

Don't suppose there is any way to force the inclusion of the host
 name in a
 DHCP request in IOS?

FYI, I set the hostname combos below with no luck:

 1)
 hostname ab9-a
 ip domain-name tv.area1.center2.catv.com

 2)
 hostname ab9-a.tv.area1.center2.catv.com
 (This gets truncated though)

Well it seems to me that you can use different process ids to simulate areas
and reditrubute as needed so that would give EIGRP

an OSPF area flavor. We do this at work quiet a bit for our European

Hey all,

I've been reading into BSCN here lately with Cisco press
books. In the book
there is a fairly detailed discussion of OSPF. I'm not in the least
opposed to learning it. One thing I would like to understand is
why an
organization would use it. Is this used in ISP's? What are the
  advantages
of it over say, EIGRP? I always see it compared to RIPv1 but I
find it
silly for advanced routing protocols to be compared with ripV1.

I'll preface my remarks with the observation that all three advanced
IGPs: OSPF, EIGRP, and ISIS, all work well. ISIS is more a niche
protocol for ISPs. There are pros and cons for each one.

OSPF and ISIS require structured network topology from the very
beginning, while EIGRP is much more tolerant -- up to a point. For
me, the definitive comment came over a few beers shared with a
distinguished Cisco engineer. He observed, "to build a really big
network, you absolutely have to have clue." He burped loudly, and
then went on. "EIGRP has the advantage of letting you stay clueless
for longer."

The biggest argument against EIGRP is that it is Cisco proprietary.
Being proprietary has implications beyond the multivendor question.
Because some of the EIGRP mechanisms have not been published by
Cisco, there isn't the external knowledge base about EIGRP that
there
is about OSPF and ISIS. Protocol and network architects have a very
deep understanding how OSPF and ISIS will behave and what their
strengths and weaknesses are, but no one who hasn't been a Cisco
employee can have the same sort of insight.

For similar topologies, EIGRP generally needs less processing than
OSPF. On the other hand, with ever-faster processors, this may not
be
a significant constraint. In a fair test, with equivalent timers
set
to equivalent values, both converge very fast, and convergence time
should not be an issue with any protocol (assuming reasonable
network
topology). EIGRP may be able to find an alternate path faster when
that path goes through a neighbor, but OSPF is faster if the
alternate path might be several hops away.

If you run Appletalk or IPX routing, there is a definite advantage
to
using EIGRP. EIGRP also can bring incremental updating to a Netware
3.x environment that can't be upgraded.

A few things to consider.

Please forgive me if this is shortsighted of me.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

 IS-IS to OSPF?

Question #2, isn't the creation of the route to null 0 established

I was planning on doing a couple of the Slattery exercises later this
week.
I like your idea of substituting IS-IS in there. When I have completed the
exercises, I will try what you did and report back. I do wish Mentor
allowed
the saving of multiple sets of configurations from their pods. I use the 6
router open lab for the complex scenarios, but can only save a singe set
of
configs. So I have to choose wisely.

Well you should be able to go to the CCO website and find the info on the
web site.
Go to the ios download site. It should tell you there during the download
process.
You will need a login.

Re: Minimum memory requirements for IOS 12.0.9

2001-01-04 Thread Raul F. Fernandez

You need to be running 12.0 whatever. Enterprise would be best but
on 2500's you are looking to upgrade the flash to 16 megs.
Can be expensive and for most of what you do this will be enough.
Try different version-type IOSs for bridging, IPSec ect that will meet your
router config ram and flash wise. If you have routers with
only 4megs RAM and Flash you will need to upgrade.
I have also heard others say that 11.3 will work fine but
12.0 is what will be on the lab routers.

It depends on what feature packs you have on there.

The IP needs 8/4, but the Enterprise needs 16/8.

Re: Frame-Relay question ?

2001-01-03 Thread Raul F. Fernandez

Folks,

While watching my beloved Seminoles get their butts kicked I decided to do
this little prob on the rack.

The key is that a frame-relay is DTE to DCE so all you need to do
after correclty initiating frame-relay on the interfaces is to make
sure you add the clock rate command to the serail interface that is DCE.

Here are the configs:

r1#

interface Serial1
 ip address 192.168.10.1 255.255.255.0
 no ip directed-broadcast
 encapsulation frame-relay
 no keepalive
 frame-relay interface-dlci 101

r2#

interface Serial1
 ip address 192.168.10.10 255.255.255.0
 no ip directed-broadcast
 encapsulation frame-relay
 no keepalive
 clockrate 56000
 frame-relay interface-dlci 101

Worked like a charm.

2000-12-26 Thread Raul F. Fernandez

Sammi,

I also have done extensive study of the CISCO IOS and I am studyng for =
the lab as we speak.
I work in an environment where not only do I troubleshoot CISCO( about =
90%) but the rest
is split up mostly by Bay and then a small amount of Motorola FRADS. =
Anyway, BAY at first
was a shock to the system since there IOS is a cross between DOS and MIB =
city. I have gotten
comfortable with MIBs on BAY now, specially doing stat caps, but I have =
also learned to use=20
site manager which is a good tool for Bays. In the process, I went ahead =
and got the low level cert for=20
Bays(Certified Support Specialist). Basically, I first saw this as a =
curse because I had no interest in anything but CISCO IOS,
but in reality there are many large companies in perticular one =
automotive company
that use all BAY. This experience has gotten me into an environment of =
further learning and
of experimentation. Especially debugging OSPF problems between CISCO =
routers and
BAY. BAY products are good, but on CLI are not perticularly friendly =
unless you are=20
willing to spend time on it. Once you get to learning the CLI is is =
powerful. BAY
has some very good solutions out there. Do not abandon CISCO but
also stive to increase your knowledge of NORTEL. Anyway, NORTEL does =
not
have all its eggs in routers. CISCO IOS is in my humble opinion =
superior. But NORTEL
has nice stuff cooking up. The person I replaced went to NORTEL and he =
was=20
CISCO savvy ...has passed the written and had extensive troubleshooting
skill being a member of the ATS group here where I work. But he got an
offer he could not refuse...off he went. I believe NORTEL right now is =
doing alot of this
and looking for CISCO folks who are good because they can figure they =
can retrain.
I have no interest myself in NORTEL at this time but after my CCIE is =
done
I dont rule it out. Its an excellent company to work for and an industry =
leader.
I am personally holding out for CISCOhahah will see. Anyway, good =
luck.
I know the guy I replaced, who works for NORTEL, is very happy there and =
he is getting
much training...take advantage of it.

You were told to configure a network as follows:

 10.1.1.2/8 hostA gw 10.1.1.1
 10.1.1.3/8 hostB gw 10.1.1.1
 10.1.1.4/8 hostC gw 10.1.1.1

hostA cannot ping hostB or hostC. hostB and hostC have no problem
pinging
eachother however, but cannot ping hostA.

hostA does get a reply however from all hosts if it pings 10.1.1.255.
What do you suppose the problem is?

I'll let you know when someone posts the right answer.

interface from sending routing information update but it can still take updates.
I see no EIGRP updates on the stub router's routing table except for the default
route "D* 0.0.0.0/0 [90/160514560] via 10.139.248.133, 1d06h,
Serial0/0.1". What is interesting to me is that it has formed a neighbor
adjecency with hub router yet it does not seem to be sending any ipdates to the
multicast address 224.0.0.10. Circusnut, the router is a 2600 mem and the IOS
file is SF26AP-12.0.7T.BIN. I am looking for info now...but any input from you
would be gladly received.

This is the EIGRP config, I am really not
dreaming :)

Hmmm- a couple things you have described don't seem
EIGRP-like. The network @ the office is EIGRP stubs are usually
set as passive or not set EIGRP @ all. In both cases they're alive
can transmit thought the network, but only"a little help from their
friend" (their directly connected neighbor). Now- the stub command may
be needed when multiple connection run to a dead end or solo router (I have
never had this issue). Witha default gateway, this surprises
me... EIGRP would not be doing it's job of discoveringof a
successor or feasible, with static commands. Changing path cost I have
seen, but default- anything I don't recommend. If your network is small,
this may not be issues. My job deals with over 1300 EIGRP routers
we have to follow EIGRP to the letter or itthings go crazy
(whichhappens anyway from time to time :-) If you ever get a
chance, pick up EIGRP Network Design Solutions (Cisco Press). As for the
12.7T, what model of router ??? We have been sooo leery with the 12.0's,
especially in the 7500 series (when it comes to EIGRP). I could check a
few devices, but I can tell you DES, LANE, EIGRP do not exist well
  beyond 11.2 (22a)...

Let me know, I actually get to talk from some experience
  here :-)

  Good Luck !!!

Subject: Question about eigrp

I have been working with a system which has under its
eigrp process this command "eigrp stub connected". From what I gather this
perticular router acts as a stub and receives no eigrp updates to its
routing table but does receive and send out hellos because it has
established a neighbor relationship to the hub router. There is a default
gateway which seem to route all packages out of the router and into the hub
router. Anyone have any links or info on this. IOS version is 12.0(7)T and I
have looked in the CCO but I see nothing so far. Anything on this for
reading purposes would be much appreciated.

Does anyone know if there is a there is a source for the major differences
 between IOS releases ?

For example 11.1 -added this or that functionality
 11.2-added support for x etc.

The info is scattered all over on Cisco.

 thanks,
 Winston.

Re: OSPF Totally Stubby Areas and area default-cost

2000-11-11 Thread Raul F. Fernandez

Bob,

A stub area may have more than one ABR. Stub areas are areas into which
information on external routes is not sent. Instead, there is a default
external route generated by the area border router, into the stub area for
destinations outside the autonomous system. To take advantage of the OSPF
stub area support, default routing must be used in the stub area.An area
could be qualified a stub when there is a single exit point from that area
or if routing to outside of the area does not have to take an optimal path.
The latter description is just an indication that a stub area that has
multiple exit points, will have one or more area border routers injecting a
default into that area. Routing to the outside world could take a
sub-optimal path in reaching the destination by going out of the area via an
exit point which is farther to the destination than other exit points

Hope this helps. I derived this information partly from Doyle's book on
TCP/IP Routing and the CCO.

Sincerely, Raul

Subject: OSPF Totally Stubby Areas and area default-cost

 Hi,
I'm confused on the subject of totally stubby areas, and the command
"area
default-cost". From what I'm reading, one of the qualifications of a
totally
stubby area is that if multiple exits (ABRs) exist, routing to outside the
area does not have to take an optimal path. Does this mean that each
router
within the area picks the closest ABR as the gateway to everything outside
the area, and that there is no way to control the default route? If so,
does
that imply that the area default-cost is used for incoming routes? Would
incoming routes even exits if the area was a totally stubby area?

I would very much appreciate it if someone would please set me straight.

  Thank you.

Re: Old Question...Catalyst 5000

2000-11-11 Thread Raul F. Fernandez

Well you can pay anywhere between 3.5k all the way to 8k on e-bay. I myself
have 2 switches in my home lab (2924 and a 1924 both enterprise) but I will
be purchasin at least a 5002 in the near future. There is no dought these
are the switches of choice for studying. You can always set time aside on
commercial time racks. This is what I have done from time to time.

I've been trying to study for the Building Cisco Multilayer Switched
Networks exam, and am about to walk out the door right now to take it.

I'm pretty much setting myself for failure, I just simply don't have the
experience with switches. Sure we've got a few 2924XL's at work, but it
 doesn't cut it.

The question... How much should I expect to pay for a Catalyst 5000?
Nothing
 fancy, just the basics.

I know most people getting free stuff from cisco are
doing it for thier personal use, but I am disgusted at
those who turn around and sell them on Ebay. You would
not believe how many items I have come across on Ebay;
t-shirts, books, you name it, its on Ebay. The most
recent item being the free book:Optical Networks, A
Practical Perspective. To those who take advantage of
Cisco by doing this, you make me sick!!

Just had to vent!
Thanks

Title: Protocol 9

Kim,

I believe this is the protocol number assigned
to EIGRP multicast packets.

I have take the liberty of including a good
link to CISCO which has a ggod explanation about
IGRP and this particular topic. By the way, you
will truly enjoy Doyle's book. Do all the exercises and try to recreate
scenarios whenever possible.
A truly excellent book.
