RE: Flash [7:74491]
You have to upgrade the 2500's to 16MB Memory and 16MB Flash to put 12.2 IOS on them. However, to do this you need to make sure the Boot ROM version in each router is at least 10.2(8a). Do a "show version" on the router to see what version the Boot ROM is. You can buy memory and flash on many of the auction sites. There are also many Cisco retailers that sell memory and flash and are part of this group. They may be contacting you! RE: Erasing IOS from Flash [7:74457]
Use the "squeeze" command. Cisco states " The squeeze command, which is used to erase all files marked for deletion on a Flash file system, is now available on Cisco 2600 and Cisco 3600 series routers." So, you did the first step by deleting the IOS, but now you have to squeeze it in order to remove it from flash. You can do a "show version" to see what version of Boot ROM you have. You need at least Boot ROM version 10.2(8a) to upgrade to 16 MB Flash. You can find them on the auction sites. Here's one I found. There are plenty more out there (watch for wrap): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3042323686&category=28033 Also, I believe Cisco may send them to you for free, but I don't know for sure. I received some from Cisco a long time ago, but I have a maintenance contract with them. You may want to search around their website or email them. Here's a link on how to install the new Boot ROMs (watch for wrap): http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps233/prod_module_installatio n_guide09186a00800eab17.html A question that comes up a lot is where to get a PLCC extractor to remove the old Boot ROMs. I got mine at Radio Shack. RE: New CCNP 642-8x1 exams [7:73598]
After looking over the blueprints, there aren't a lot of differences between the old exams and the new exams that I can see. There are some newer topics, but I really don't see enough change between the old exams and the new exams to get nervous about. I noticed that Cisco likes to take a topic from an old blueprint and re-word it so that it looks different in a new blueprint, even though it's the same topic. Here's what I've noticed "most of the time" in the past when Cisco releases a new version of a particular exam: The core topics are always covered, regardless of whether you're taking an old exam or a new exam. Cisco likes to re-word questions taken from old exams and put them on new exams. However, they still cover the same topics. Know these core topics and you have 90% of the exam covered. The other 10% may be new questions covering new technologies, etc. Just my opinion. A BEAST [7:73770] Boson's guarantee is if you fail Twice within 90 days after purchasing the practice exam. So if you fail once and pass the second time you won't get you $40 back. I didn't do the new CCDA but I did the CCDP/CCNP recerts just a while ago. As the CCDA is only an one exam test, it might not bother you if you miss your deadline. However, if your company needs your certification for their Partner designation then I would suggest studying for a week, taking it around the 21st and if you fail you have time to recover, study the material you think you had issues with and then retake the exam. Cisco exam retakes require a 72 hour wait so in your case don't take the exam on the 26th since that would take you into the weekend. We don't have any exam centers here that are open on the weekend. If you do then your latest date for a first attempt would be the 27th. Best call Prometric to confirm when a retake is possible. As I said, taking an $150 test just to see it might seem more expensive than the Boson but if you need it then in my opinion its a cost of doing business - and besides you would have to spend $300 anyway to get your $40 back from Boson. If this is a "personal" cert then I wouldn't personally worry about it. Take it when you feel that you're prepared. (unless you don't want to change your resume...) RE: CCIE Lab experience! [7:73263]
I just can't see it happening (pass the CCIE lab with only reading books). I'm a CCNP/CCDP with a good, solid three years of hands-on Cisco experience under my belt and can't believe what I've learned by being able to actually configure and troubleshoot the equipment. There's no way that I could get that from just reading books. And I still don't feel prepared to tackle the CCIE lab yet! If you can't afford your own equipment, see if you can find a study group in your area. Most times, many members of the group already have all the equipment and you can work on scenarios together. Or, you can actually rent rack time very cheaply now if you want some hands-on practice. Yes, I agree that the "session" command uses an internal telnet session. Cisco's documentation says "using a Telnet session", but I believe they didn't go into enough detail! To appreciate the difference, consider what the 'switch console' command does: it directs the MSFC console to the console outlet that is visible on the supervisor card (FWIW, the MSFC module has its own hardware console port, it's just not wired into an RJ-45 outlet on the front panel of the card). So if you are *not* on the console, then 'switch console' doesn't help you. If you are telnetting to the box (ie. you want to access the MSFC "from" a telnet session), then you have to use the 'session' command. Now it is possible that the 'session' command is in fact uses a telnet session internally. Even so I would be surprised if you could disable that using access lists. It is certainly not a "normal" telnet session as it doesn't require username/password and such. However, to be sure: Dave, please try it out, and let us know! :) Thanks, Zsombor >. RE: Unable to copy from Sup-Slot0 [7:71038]
Well, this issue has been resolved with the help of Cisco! Here's a quick run-down of what happened: The MSFC2 on the 6509 switch was booting into boot mode because there was only one image in bootflash (the boot image). I couldn't copy a main image to bootflash using the "copy sup-slot0: bootflash:" command and I couldn't get any connectivity between the switch and the MSFC2. After working with Cisco, they said that there is a bug in the 12.1 MSFC2 code that causes problems using the "copy sup-slot0: bootflash:" command with the main image. The boot image can be copied using the "copy sup-slot0: bootflash:" command because it is small, but the main image is apparently too big to be handled. As for the connectivity between the 6509 switch and the MSFC2, Cisco told me that since the MSFC2 is booting into boot mode, the boot image is very limited in what it can do. In fact, you need to use VLAN1 to set up connectivity (I was using VLAN120). So, after changing everything over to VLAN1 on the switch and on the MSFC2, I was able to gain connectivity between the switch and the MSFC2. From there, I connected my laptop to a port on the switch and TFTP could then be used to dump the main image into bootflash! RE: 6509 MSFC [7:71340]
According to Cisco's website, using the "session" command is what they call "accessing the MSFC from the switch CLI using a Telnet session". However, you can access the MSFC from the console port using the "switch console" command, which Cisco describes as "accessing the MSFC from the switch CLI directly connected to the supervisor engine console port". See the following link for more information (watch for wrap): http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_configuration _guide_chapter09186a008007ebb5.html Shawn K. -Original Message- From: Dave C. I have defined several VLAN interfaces on the MSFC, and now must create a specific access-list to limit only a certain source and port address to reach each of these VLAN's. This access-list will not allow Telnet connectivity. My question is, if I create this access list and bind it to all VLANs, will I be able to SESSION over from the switch to the MSFC? Does the SESSION command actually use Telnet to get to the MSFC? Will I need to assign a loopback address and then allow access to the loopback address specifically in my access-list? I just want to make sure that I do not block all access to the MSFC. Any clarification on this would be helpful. Thanks. RE: Unable to copy from Sup-Slot0 [7:71038]
Yes, the main problem is that I'm booting into boot mode, which is why I want to copy an image into bootflash. As you probably know, the boot image is required in bootflash in order to boot to the main image. Just so you can see the whole process, I deleted the boot image from bootflash and started from scratch. As you can see, the boot image copies with no problem from sup-slot0 into bootflash. However, as soon as I try to copy the main image, it times out. I think I'll try formatting the flash card next and copy the images back onto it. Still no word from my TAC engineer. Shawn K. At the end of the day you are refusing to deal with the issues at hand. Whether you choose to attack my motives or my character - whatever you want to call it - it's still out of bounds. You are either talking about the actual issues at hand, or you're not. Simple as that. Besides, character and motives are basically one and the same. Wouldn't somebody with bad character necessarily have bad motives? Is there really such a thing as a guy with bad character having good motives? Or vice versa? I don't think so. So really, when you say that you're questioning my motives but not my character, that's really a distinction without a difference. Look, the bottom line is this. I don't question your motives or your character. Don't do it to me. > > 2. Don't you think I would know the focus of my own posts? When have I said in this particular thread that all certifications were worthless? In fact, you could easily say quite the opposite - I have said several times that certain certifications, namely low-number CCIE's, are in fact quite valuable. So how does that jive with your accusation that I am somehow painting all certifications as worthless, when in fact I have singled out a certification subset as worthy? Oh, but I get it, you keep insisting that I am actually bashing all certs as a "stealth undercurrent thesis", despite the fact that I think everybody in this ng would agree that I don't exactly "do" stealth. If I want to say something, I'm going to say it. Here's an idea, Jack. Instead of debating me on what you believe the undercurrents of my words are saying, why not debate me on what I'm ACTUALLY saying? To do otherwise is really to engage in that character assassination and shooting-of-the-messenger that is simply uncouth. > 2b. How the heck am I supposed to prove a negative? You can always accuse anybody of using subliminal messages and codewords, and what the heck am I supposed to do about it? Nobody can prove a negative. But once again, I ask you, why not debate me on my actual words, rather than what you "insinuate" my words to mean? To me, this particular thread only has to do with the decline in value of the CCIE as related to the value of lower vs. higher-number CCIE's - the value of college education has nothing to do with it. RE: CCNP Sw question [7:69683]
I don't believe that ISL requires identical native VLANs at each end of a trunk, however, 802.1Q does (if I'm wrong, someone please correct me). The trunk negotiation parameter at each end of the link does not have to be identical because there can be different negotiation combinations that each port can be in to form a trunk (desirable/on, on/auto, etc.). RE: Free trial access to CCIE equipment [7:69677]
There are good and bad points about this. It's always good to have multiple lab vendors to choose from and I'm sure that people would be interested. HOWEVER, the certification market is saturated with labs like yours and with study materials, etc. It is very difficult to break into this business without a lot of marketing. People need to know how to find you, and that means search engine placement, word of mouth, advertising, etc. Your pricing would have to be quite low to compete with the labs currently out there. It's good that you're not looking to become a millionaire from this. Being in the certification business for the last 3+ years, I can tell you that the chances of this are slim to none! Your topology looks usable and people may want to use it to practice certain topics for their CCNA/CCNP, providing your pricing is right! Check the other labs out there to see what they're charging so you can be competitive. Shawn K. -Original Message- From: testlab [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, May 28, 2003 9:44 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Free trial access to CCIE equipment [7:69677] Hello there, I've set up a pod of equipment that can be accessed from the Internet. I'm hoping to get some feedback on how usable it is and if there is a market for selling access to this sort of stuff. I've spent a fair bit of money and time setting it up. I've done the CCIE stuff so have some empathy with anyone needing hands on practice. I'm not looking to become a millionaire or anything but if I could make enough money each month to pay back my investment and to cover the electricity bill for this stuff which is currently heating up my garage then it might keep me in beer. I've set up a temporary Personal Web Page to show the topology. http://www.testlab.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk Features it doesn't have Voice ATM Features it does have Frame Relay switch ISDN simulator Multicasting server Good points Flexible - you can change the topology by putting routers into different VLANs and/or changing Frame-Relay active DLCIs Bad points 1x2600 and 4 x 2500 which are slow to reboot. You can get asked anything for the CCIE R&S lab but the core is IP so in my opinion you might as well know it inside out and this kit should give you the opportunity to test this. There are no exercises - just access to the kit - at this point anyway. If you fancy a go for a day send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] for access details. In return you can let me know what you think and what would be a fair price to access it. The connection details will change obviously when your session has ended. I'll probably run it for a couple of weeks and see what response I get. RE: 9E0-541 Exam trobules [7:65162]
I am in no way picking on you in particular in this email, but this brings up a point that has been discussed previously at Groupstudy. A big problem with all this certification insanity and brainwashing is that people can keep taking and re-taking the exams until they pass. So, people end up not really knowing the technologies, just how to memorize numerous questions or topics that may be covered on the exams. It's to the point where I don't even put CCNP, CCDP, etc. after my name anymore because it really doesn't prove anything. For all anyone knows, I may have never touched a router or designed a network in my life. I may have just taken the exams 10 times each until I passed. You're best off taking the time to really learn the materials so that when you take the exam, you're not doing it on a wing and a prayer. You'll not only save yourself some money, but you can feel that you really deserve to pass and be able to apply this knowledge to actual situations. New Catalyst 2955 Switch [7:64909]
I'm sure many of you have already read about this new switch, but these are quite different looking than the normal Cisco switches I'm used to working with. Plus, I even had a dream last night about these silly things, so they were on my mind this morning. Cisco designed these basically for the manufacturing sector or anywhere else that the atmosphere wreaks havoc on networking equipment. I remember some of the switch rooms at GM that I've been into and I was surprised that the fans didn't stop turning because they were so clogged with dust! These new switches don't use fans. Instead, they are internally cooled and are able to operate at extreme temperatures and withstand extreme vibration and shock. RE: CCIE C&S written practice exams?? [7:64354]
Before some people have a premature Boson nervous breakdown, let's look at what the question is asking. First, the poster is asking for information on the CCIE C&S (Communications and Services) exam. He says WAN Switching, but I don't think that's available anymore, so he probably meant Communications and Services. Assuming this, the Boson 1 and 3 exams that are being mentioned are for the R&S (Routing and Switching) track, not the C&S track. I just went to their site and didn't see anything for the C&S track. While the CCIE C&S exam covers 50% of general topics, the other 50% of the exam is on a specific C&S technology. So, even if the Boson exams cover 50% of the exam, why would someone spend $80.00 for materials that only cover half the exam? I don't know of anyone right now who has practice exams for the C&S track. The poster may be best off studying from CCO, which is free, rather than purchasing any materials that don't specifically cover this exam. I took it about three weeks ago. It was tough for me but then I don't get as much real-world hands on experience with routing protocols and such as I'd like. For info check here: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/testing/current_exam s/640-901.html There is a new book out for the BSCI test http://www.ciscopress.com/catalog/product.asp?product_id={E9CBCDAF-77DF-468E -B2F6-C902C0B78D6F} but I used the old for the the BSCN test and the info from here at Cisco on IS-IS: http://www.ciscopress.com/content/images/1578702283/downloads/2283newchap2.p df?session_id={191E20FE-35FE-420B-94D2-D7BAA31347FC} and it worked out OK for me. I had 57 questions. Passing score was 700 out of 1000. I passed but I ain't bragging about my score. Strange as it might sound, most of my routing test was on routing protocols. It was very pretty evenly spread between OSPF, BGP and IS-IS. Know them. Really know IS-IS. Probably 20% of my test was on IS-IS. I was told to expect 3 or 4 questions max on it but I had a lot more on mine. Understand CLNP and CLNS. Had some questions on VLSM, redistributing and optimizing routes, RIP2, EIGRP too - basically everything in the BSCN book and from the pdf above. If you have access to a real lab or have one of your own (thank you, eBay) you will be way ahead of the game. If you do, get the Cisco Academy Semester 5 - Advanced Routing - info and do all the labs in there. If you can't actually do them then study them. Don't know anything about the router sims available. They may be a decent alternative to having access to routers. Someone else may be able to speak to that. Get familiar with the commands to accomplish tasks within the individual protocols. There's a lot of memorization in this test. It covers a lot of ground. And my test covered a lot of some of it and a little of all of the rest of it. Only surprise I had was how much IS-IS was on the test. Boson, Fravo and TestKing make some decent practice tests too. Any one of them would probably do as they're all pretty similar. Good luck. RE: CCIE Study Materials - Anti-Rant [7:62930]
I was wondering how long it would take for some of the "big guns" in this group to finally mention this within the group. :-) In fact, as Chuck, Paul, and John know, I've been ragging on them so much about this topic that they probably can't stand me anymore. I've been in the certification business for nearly four years and in that time I've seen the certification market get downright ridiculous with the piracy and lies regarding products. I've written certification materials for many of the companies discussed on this group and I am also part owner of another, so I can relate to this. I've always felt that some companies received the majority of the attention in this group while others have been dropped in the bit bucket. In the past I have tried to mention the companies I'm involved with when I can. So, I've also been guilty of abusing this, only because I felt that other companies were being given priority within this group. However, many of these posts end up in the bit bucket, for whatever reason. I have to agree that I've seen a lot of people using sneaky tactics to get their products in front of this group. Such as directing people to their websites of so-called "free" materials or advice, only to then direct their attention to a commercial interest in a particular company. Sending duplicate messages mentioning a product or recommendation. Or using different identities to start a discussion on their products or to cut down a competitor. Even though the company I'm involved with offers tons of free advice, it rarely makes it to the list when I post it, for whatever reason (I must have pissed off the moderators one too many times :-)). It's gotten to the point where I don't even try to mention the companies I'm involved with anymore, which may be a good thing, because I'm sure most of the people on this group are sick and tired of all the posts that "recommend this company" or say that "this company sucks", or whatever. Anyway, some people will love a certain product while others will hate it. Let the people decide on their own what materials to use through the marketing efforts of the companies they're looking at. Also, as Chuck and Howard mentioned, one source of materials won't necessarily mean success. It's good to look at many different sources. There's probably not a way to stop these types of posts from getting through, and as Chuck mentioned, maybe they should be let through and just ignored by the people who want to ignore them. It's a touchy subject, but the group must be fair about letting through posts that are trying to direct people to websites that can help answer their questions, whether or not there is a financial interest in the company or not. The group shouldn't play God and decide that only certain companies or posts can get through while others can't. Shawn K. -Original Message- From: Howard C. I'll leave it to Paul Borghese to decide how specifically to discuss this, but the problem literally goes back for years. Some of the worst offenses have been moderated out of the queue, so you haven't seen all of them. Suffice it to say that I'd be delighted to see objective comparisons. I'd personally not object to new product announcements (as distinct from advertisements), as long as someone doesn't start announcing every minor fix to keep their name in the spotlight. After all, vendors have their own support forums for that sort of thing. Vendors have lots of people with substantial expertise, but some responses really aren't at the level at which they could contribute and come across as flagging their product. There's nothing wrong with people with interest in training materials or services making informative responses -- offhand, most of the "old timers" do have some product relationships. There are also problems with people who have made very few, or even zero, posts before they come out with an attack on a person or on a product. A complex issue is whether or not to have discussions on-list of commercial scenarios. If you don't have the workbook, the discussion is apt to be impossible to follow. If you describe the scenario in enough detail that someone can reproduce it, some vendors may claim illegal distribution. The only answer I can think of here is to paraphrase the specific requirement, and show your own configs and displays and ask specific questions. What I don't want to see is personal

RE: New Instructor Experiences [7:62826]
John, You may want to drown your disappointment in something a little stronger than coffee. :-) I volunteered to teach a small computer class at my daughter's school a while back and I definitely had those days. It usually happened when there were pressing issues at the office and I was anxious to finish the class so I could start to resolve the issues. However, after a while I learned to concentrate more on the class than the office! In my opinion, it's just one of those things that happen occasionally. The first session, which was really just a runthrough with a handful of students, went fairly well. In fact, it went so well that they increased the number of overall attendees to about 60 or so. Last week I had another session that went exceptionally well, except for a couple of students who really didn't want to be there. I couldn't have asked for it to go better, and my boss heard lots of good things about it. One person even said I should be a professor! :-) Now, that brings us to today Today I had an afternoon class, and in my opinion it sucked rotten eggs. I feel embarrassed to have been involved with it.I can't think of too many ways in which it could have gone worse. I rambled, I flew through 2.5 hours of material in about an hour, I lost my place a lot. I'm not certain that I ever formed a train of thought longer than a couple of cars, and I think even those trains were without engine and caboose. Have any of you other instructors had days like that? As I even mentioned in class, I felt like my 'explainer' was broken today, and it certainly was. I'm hoping that I could get some sympathy from other instructors with similar experiences. Okay, I'm going to go drown my disappointment in some coffee! Console problem [7:62179]
I have a strange problem or serious problem. I configured a Cisco 1605R router which was configured before. This time, I only changed E0 and E1 ip address, and default route through the console. After that, I put it into the server room, booted it up, but I couldn't ping the interfaces. I thought maybe the interfaces were not up, I should run "no shutdown" command. I took it back to the office, connected the console port to the com1, but it never comes back. It is dead. It can not boot. Nothing shows in Hyper Terminal. Maybe one time of ten times of reboot just shows @ . That is all. Note: console cable, com1, and Hyper terminal are working fine. Any ideas? RE: CCNP switching Exam question [7:60537]
Destination-IP flow mask on the MLS-SE is the default flow mask, no access-lists are being used on the MLS-RP. Source-Destination-IP flow mask on the MLS-SE is used when there is a standard access-list used on the MLS-RP. IP-Flow flow mask on the MLS-SE is used when there is an extended access-list used on the MLS-RP. Depending on what flow mask is being used (depending on what access-list is being used) will influence the type of MLS cache. If the Destination-IP flow mask is used, then the MLS-SE cache maintains one MLS entry for each given destination IP address. If the Source-Destination-IP flow mask is used, the MLS-SE cache has a separate entry for each source and destination pair. If the IP-Flow flow mask is used, the MLS-SE cache has a separate entry for each unique combination of source and destination IP address, each protocol port number, and each type of IP protocol. I believe that the CCNP exams still test on the Catalyst 5000/6000 set-based commands, but don't buy a Catalyst 5000 (unless you have money to burn) since you'll eventually need to know the IOS-based 3550's for the CCIE lab. You can learn what you need to know about set-based commands from the books. That should be enough to pass the exams. As for what position you should look for, it sounds like you already have it! Right now is a bad time to be moving around between jobs because the job market sucks. Stay where you're at until you've got your CCNP/CCDP under your belt and the job market improves! RE: 640 - 901 [7:60405]
Here's a tip: Since the simulation question(s) will most likely be on configuring one of the routing protocols, you really need to know how to completely configure them (please note that you need to know more about configuring these protocols than what I have shown): Configuring OSPF in a Single Area Router(config)#router ospf Router(config-router)#network area Configuring EIGRP Router(config)#router eigrp Router(config-router)#network Configuring BGP Router(config)#router bgp Router(config-router)#neighborremote-as Router(config-router)#network mask Configuring ISIS Router#router isis [area tag] Router(config)#net network-entity-title Here's one of my favorite IS-IS links (watch for wrap): http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios121/121cgcr/ip_c /ipcprt2/1cdisis.htm Shawn K. > -Original Message- > From: John Brandis [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Monday, January 06, 2003 12:46 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: 640 - 901 [7:60405] > > Hi All, > > I am doing this exam in 12 days. Dr. Jimmy, :-) If I could get someone to pay for my Ph.D., I would go for it! pH would definitely have more clout than CCNP/CCDP! First, send me all your routers. :-) In all seriousness, the tech job market pretty much sucks everywhere right now because it is over-saturated (in my opinion) and companies are really cutting staff to help their bottom line. I take it that you're still working as an accountant, so you still have money coming in. If you really enjoy networking and eventually want to work in this field, then by all means recertify. If you're interested, contact me offline and I'll send you some free study materials from one of the certification companies that I do work for (it's legal because I'm a co-owner of the company). RE: 640-851 test taken [7:58925]
My guess is that you for sure have to do the "no shutdown" command but probably not the "copy run start" command. After all, you're doing a simulation that is supposed to represent what you would actually do in a certain situation. If you don't bring up an interface and that interface is needed for the configuration to work, then your configuration won't work. On the other hand, your configuration will still work without the "copy run start" as long as the router doesn't need to be rebooted. Not sure how the simulations are graded. RE: Routing Exam:640-901 [7:58867]
Agreed. When you actually "do" something, it tends to stay in memory. On most of my exams, I would read the text and then try to incorporate the topic into my lab. It really helped to understand the topic. However, as the original poster mentioned, there are some topics on this exam that you can't actually "do" and must memorize them. So, as with all exams, books, Cisco blueprint, CCO, and hands-on are a good bet for success! Bill, I agree with you in that it was very foolish to just start throwing "pink slips" around without first finding out how these individuals may be able to help the company. I'm sure many of them would be happy to take a pay cut and would still be able to contribute valuable input. I don't believe it is a weakness not having the so-called "killer instinct". People with that trait usually end up killing their own careers by making stupid, ego-based, inaccurate decisions. If Adrian's staff was not challenged due to the diminished role of Routing and Switching, I don't believe his first course of action should have been to throw them away. If they were contractors to whom the company was not obligated to train outside the scope of the original project, then concessions could have been made to renegotiate the rate in return for realigned objectives. If they weren't contractors, this is an example of a dangerous trend in all business environments. There are ways around throwing an employee on the street. I don't care WHAT kind of budget you have to work with. Sometimes cuts can't be avoided regardless of the belt tightening that a department may do, but this case does not seem to be one where an executive decision was made to eliminate X amount of headcount. This list has provided countless posts of industry aces taking massive pay cuts to put food on the table. It may be my weakness to not have the "killer instinct" that Adrian has displayed, but I'd rather offer any position I could as a Unix or security admin at a lowered rate, than to take away someone's entire livelihood. Let's face it - R/S skills are simply not as demanded as they were in the past, and if R/S people want to maintain their high salaries (or even keep their job), they better develop different skills. IT has always been an industry of flux, where skills that used to command high pay one day no longer do so the next day. RE: BCRAN 640-505 [7:58871]
I can't comment on this book because I haven't read it. However, I've found that using the Cisco Press books along with the exam blueprint and CCO is normally the best bet for success. Also, 505 materials will normally be sufficient to pass the 605 exam. RE: Ccie is a rip off! [7:58458]
CCO is always the best place to study because I believe that most of the questions are taken from there. The nice thing about a book or practice tests, if they're done correctly, is that it takes the information on CCO (depending on the subject or exam) and puts it all in one place! Good test. Liked it a lot. Can't say much about the content, obviously. The 3550's were there. I think that those who have expressed reservations about this will find little to worry about. The Lab writers did a pretty good job of integrating the devices into the rack and the exam. I think I was more surprised by what I did NOT see than by what I did see. Wish I could say more. There were the usual off the wall requirements. I knew the names, or had heard of the technology, but had never practiced it. Here's where the doc CD came in handy. It was very easy to locate the information and do the required configuration. I did have one very odd problem I was unable to solve. My own practice, not to mention the doc CD configuration guide, told me that a particular configuration should have worked. But it didn't. I've mocked up the configuration here at home, and it took a total of 10 minutes to start from a router with no configuration and have it up and running correctly. But in the Lab it just would not work. I have an inquiry in to the CCIE Lab folks, asking them to check the rack. I believe there is a physical problem, although for the life of me I cannot come up with a plausible explanation as to why. I would get more specific, except this would be a direct violation of NDA. I will say that anyone who sits at rack 12 in San Jose - if you are absolutely certain your configuration is correct, tell the proctor. I hesitated to do so, and I paid the price. You'll know when you see it ;-) I did one stupid thing, and the more I think about it, I should have corrected it immediately when I discovered it. When I first created my notepad file with my alias commands, I stupidly did most of them as "alias configure" rather than "alias exec" Given that the lab is graded pretty much by scripts, I have this bad feeling that this mistake may have interfered with the operation of some of those scripts, meaning that I was not given credit for successfully completed tasks just because the script was unable to function properly. You are no longer given a point total in your report. When I counted up points in the late afternoon, I thought I had between 60 and 70. I had no reachability problems, save to one interface, and that interface had nothing depending upon it. I knew I didn't have enough points to pass, but I thought I was close. To judge from my score report, the final total was maybe 35-45 depending. As those of you who have been there know, the "dependings" will kill you every time. :-) I can say I had a lot of fun doing this test. That's probably part of the reason I failed - I'm having too much fun. I can also say I'm hot to trot. I can taste it. I'm yay close to passing, and I want back in as soon as I can get there. You can bet I'm checking CCO regularly for those open dates. Afterwards, I had the pleasure of hooking up with groupstudy regular Larry Letterman. Larry - thanks for the tour - it was impressive. I was reminded of exactly why I got into the tech business in the first place - the desire to do things like you are doing, important things, things that keep businesses competitive. Following the Cisco CCIE Written 350-001 Blueprint is always your best bet. You'll notice that much of the material on the blueprint hasn't changed from the old exam, so you still need to know this material. The new stuff on the exam (MPLS, QoS, etc.) is also very important. However, you don't know which questions you will get from the pool. I've talked to numerous people at EDS who said that they had very little MPLS or QoS and that their CCIE Written exam mostly covered the old material. Others have had exams that were loaded with MPLS and QoS. So, you really won't know what topics will be covered heavily on your exam until you take it! 3550 w/ Inline Power [7:57051]
Just received this announcement and wanted to give everyone a "heads up" in case you don't already know. This product is not going to be announced to the general public until the middle of November. New Cisco Catalyst 3550-24 PWR Switch with Inline Power OVERVIEW Cisco is pleased to introduce the newest addition to the Catalyst. 3550 Intelligent Ethernet Series switches, the Cisco Catalyst 3550-24 PWR switch. The Catalyst 3550-24 PWR is a key enhancement to the Cisco IP Communications system ranging from unified messaging and call processing improvements to infrastructure that supports IP deployments for operational efficiency. The Catalyst 3550-24 PWR inline power switch is a stackable, multilayer, 24-port 10/100 switch with 2 GBIC ports ideal for integrated voice, video, and data applications. With integrated inline power, customers can power Cisco IP phones and Cisco Aironet wireless LAN access points directly from the switch and lower the total cost of ownership (TCO) by: -- Centralizing power provisioning -- Easing deployment by eliminating the need for wall power to each device -- Eliminating the need for additional, separate wiring to power devices The Catalyst 3550-24 PWR switch possesses all of the advanced Layer 2-4 intelligent services available in the Catalyst 3550 Series. Customers can deploy high-performance IP routing, advanced quality of service (QoS), granular rate-limiting, enhanced network security, and multicast management network-wide -- while maintaining the simplicity of traditional LAN switching. Additionally, up to 15.4W/port of inline power on every 10/100 port ensures maximum device support for IP telephony and wireless LAN deployments. Maximum power availability for a converged voice and data network is attainable when the Catalyst 3550-24 PWR switch is combined with the Cisco Redundant Power System 675 (RPS 675) (available 1HCY03) for seamless protection against internal power supply failures and an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system to safeguard against power outages. The Catalyst 3550-24 PWR is available with either the Standard Multilayer Software Image (SMI) or the Enhanced Multilayer Software Image (EMI). The SMI feature set includes advanced QoS, rate-limiting, access control lists (ACLs), and basic static and RIP routing functionality. The EMI provides a richer set of enterprise-class services including advanced hardware-based IP unicast and multicast routing and the Web Cache Communication Protocol (WCCP). After initial deployment, the Enhanced Multilayer Software Image upgrade kit (CD-3550-EMI=) gives users the flexibility to upgrade to the EMI. Priscilla, This doesn't explain why it says at the beginning of the survey (not sure if this is true for all exams), "Your answers to this survey will help in the grading of this exam" (not sure if these are the exact words). I've seen this on some of my exams (not betas) when I've taken the time to read the entire survey. Maybe they're talking about future exams. Who the hell knows what Cisco does? Personally, I couldn't care less because the idea is to know the material, not try to figure out a way to pass the exam knowing as little as possible! :-) Shawn K. -Original Message- From: Priscilla Oppenheimer [mailto:nobody@;groupstudy.com] Sent: Tuesday, October 29, 2002 1:05 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: Questions before tests [7:56452] Aaron Ajello wrote: > > I'm working on my CCNP, just have CIT to go and when I have > taken the first three, I just kindof flew through the questions > before the test where Cisco asks about your experience level, > whether or not you can configure things on your own or need > help with a coworker, etc. > > Is it true that your answers will determine how the test is > graded or what types of questions you will get on the actual > test? No, your answers to the survey don't determine how the test is graded or the types of questions you will get on the test. And aliens didn't land at Roswell either. :-) You should ask Cisco for the definitive answer, but I think numerous people have before and we've discussed this on the list before, and that was the answer. You could check the archives. They ask you questions about your experience to help them validate the questions. If a high percentage of newbies get a question wrong, but the experienced people get it right, then it's a good question. And vice versa, if the newbies get a question right but the experienced people don't, it might be a bogus question, something like at what OSI layer does ARP run? ;-) I've written tests in the past and that's how the data was used and I doubt it has changed. Although this topic has been discussed in the past, there seems to be disagreement on the correct answer. Personally, I have read the wording before some of the surveys and it actually says that your answers will be used to help determine scoring on the exam. I don't believe it determines what questions you get, only the scoring. Whether it's done on all the exams or just some, I don't know. How it's done, I also don't know. My guess is if you downplay your skills too much, you will be graded harder because your skills should match the certification you're trying to achieve. RE: Native IOS on 6500 vs 3500EMI for lab study? [7:55972]
Sorry for the misunderstanding, guys. I got to thinking more about this and I guess I wasn't thinking of the MSFC, just the 6500 switch itself. I work with 6000's with MSFC's and it should have slapped me in the face right away that there were similarities. There's this big mystical thing right now regarding these 3550's and I was having a hard time seeing anything being used in place of them! This information is good to know! Re: Public Internet Access [7:55898]
Robert, Have the VLAN for these users route to a DMZ interface on your PIX rather than the layer 3 switch. Set the security level of that interface to 1 (just higher than the outside). If you don't specify an ACL on that PIX interface, you should be able to use PIX security levels to automatically deny access to the internal LAN while permitting access to the internet. RE: Would this break the NDA [7:55799]
While I agree that it's probably the safest way to go about it, we're talking about a terminal emulator here, not the actual content of the lab. I guess there's a fine line between the NDA and paranoia! :-) I'll write Cisco and get an answer. RE: Would this break the NDA [7:55799]
No, I don't believe it breaks the NDA. It's not any different than knowing what equipment is in the lab, which is spelled out for everyone right on Cisco's website. I've heard it was Reflections or Hyperterminal. I don't know because I haven't taken the lab yet, but I would like to know just out of curiosity. If you feel comfortable telling us, please do! Check the Groupstudy archives. I've answered this question before, so you should find it there! RE: Changes in CCNP Courses?? [7:55085]
The only thing I could think of that would change would be to possibly add some simulations to these particular exams. Also, with the addition of the 3550 switch in the lab, the SWTCH exam may soon be asking questions regarding some of the features of this switch. However, who the hell knows anymore what Cisco is going to do. And who the hell knows when! :-) But I wouldn't expect any changes for a while since Cisco just updated the SWTCH and SUPRT exams to the 6xx series not to long ago. That's just my guess. RE: good alt. to a catalyst 3550 [7:55132]
I don't know of any alternative for the 3550. While you can purchase a less expensive switch to practice your IOS-based commands (such as a 2912XL, 2924XL, or 3524XL, for example), you will be losing a lot of features that will most likely show up on the CCIE Lab exam, such as advanced Quality of Service (QoS) and Layer 3 functionality. You're best off biting the bullet and purchasing a 3550 or renting 3550 rack time. Re: I need any 5.x firmware for a Catalyst 1900 [7:55125]
You need to go to this URL, and click on the "Catalyst 1900 original" link: http://www.cisco.com/kobayashi/sw-center/lan/cat1900.shtml You will need a CCO login to get to it. If you don't have a login, you can only get the version 9 software for the newer models. Thanks, Shawn Colin Weaver wrote: > > Please!!!
